Bug#490154: geeqie: cannot open help page: replace "gnome-www-browser" with "sensible-browser"

2008-07-14 Thread Laurent MONIN
Hi,

i applied the proposed patch to geeqie trunk and make some changes to accept
other ways to define the html browser:

* Geeqie trunk revision 977:
Apply debian-specific patch to launch help browser (bug 2015099).

* Geeqie trunk revision 978:
Improve ways to specify html browser (used for help, see bug 2015099).
Two new rc file options were added:
- helpers.html_browser.command_name
- helpers.html_browser.command_line
These are checked first before trying common browser locations.
If these do not lead to a valid browser, then geeqie will
search for geeqie_html_browser script in the path, then
it will try various common browsers.

Kind regards,

Yes, it is not something like -snapshot but, at least recently,
it is what you guessed as alternative possibiliry;

So, from the same reason,

it will be easier for our security team to support lynx-cur
than a stable lynx.

@Debian Qt/KDE guys:
Can you have a look at this? It's kinda annoying to have all
transparent images displayed inverterted.
For a fix I think one could manipulate QImage.cpp or QImageReader.cpp
to run QImage::rgbSwapped() if an image with an alpha channel is
detected on BigEndian (but that would be more a workaround than a
fix :/)

Bug#490899: user-setup-udeb: way to (easily) *not* create a user, but do the root password setup

2008-07-14 Thread Joerg Jaspert
Package: user-setup-udeb
Severity: wishlist

Hi

Would be nice if there is an easy way to skip creation of an user
account but still do the rest of the task user-setup-udeb usually does.

IE, when I entered the root password and then leave the username blank
(login name), it currently displays a warning (fine), but then jumps
back and tries to do it all again. It should please ask something like

"Maybe you want to go without a normal user account?"

and then skip the user creation. And if you only ask that in case no
login name was entered it will only be displayed to very few users, so
not distracting most people.

Yes, one could enter some foo=bar during boot, to preseed some value and
pass by that. But - sometimes its hard to do that (broken kvm over
ip not letting you enter all characters is one reason), so it would be
nice if it can be skipped during d-i run too.

Bug#486300: Info received (more failures different box/nic)

2008-07-14 Thread Alex Samad
Hi

I believe this bug can be closed now. I posted the question on
linux-kernel mailing list. A reply came back about mtu issues.

Seems like I had 2 problems
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 409687380   2097152
in my sysctl.conf, a hang over from long ago

and my mtu was set wrongly the route information was different from the
ip li information

I had

ip r a 192.168.11.10/32 dev eth0 mtu 9100
ip li set eth0 mtu 6144

since clearing these up I haven't had any problems, I was able to
previously reproduce the probem by coping over a 2G file

Bug#490897: ldm: tcsh users unable to login]

2008-07-14 Thread Daniel Nilsson
Package: ldm
Version: 2:2.0.6-1~40.etch.0
Severity: important

After a lot of hours spent troubleshooting I have discovered that ldm (at
least,
could be other parts of ltsp as well) assumed that the user trying to login
is using as bourne shell in the server machine.

For example, line 71 if src/sshutils.c of ldm:

sshcmd[i++] = "LANG=C";

Here ssh is hardcoded to set an environmental variable using this syntax
which is not compatible with tcsh syntax (env LANG=C would be needed in that
case). I tried changing the above but this only seemed to move the problem
somewhere else. If I create two new users on the server where one user is
using /bin/bash as login shell and one user is using /usr/bin/tcsh only the
bash user is allowed to login.

I'm on etch but I followed the directions here to install LTSP5:

Bug#488283: software rendering

2008-07-14 Thread Sten Heinze
I tried to find more information. It looks like the bugs has a similar reason
as #393266 for xserver-xorg-video-savage, see also
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7767.

I installed debian's linux-image-2.6.25-2-686 from testing, and compiled
vanilla 2.6.25.10 (+patches for tp-smapi, hdaps, linux-phc), but the error
message still remains the same.

Please let me know, if I can help.

It's your decision, but are you sure that you want to take on the
repsonsibility of maintaining a development release of lynx throughout
a stable release cycle instead of the stable release of lynx?

I can't speak for the security team, but I'd be rather suprised if
they'd be willing to support a development version in favor of a
stable version of lynx.

From where I sit, it seems like the wrong solution to #369386 was
reached; lynx-cur should have an RC bug against it, but that RC bug
should exist only to keep lynx-cur to transition to testing and then
being released. A second lynx package should exist which is the most
recent stable release of the lynx tree. [This situtation already
exists for numerous -snapshot packages which should never be released
with a Debian stable release.]

An alternative possibility exists that the -cur release is actually
the version that upstream plans on having long-term support for, and
the lynx version is just for legacy users, but the bug thread (which I
read) doesn't make this point clear.

I don't know it is acceptable for you or not but, personally,
I prefer lynx-cur because there are two branches of lynx
in the upstream and the development version is called lynx-cur
by the upstream. The name lynx-cur explicitly expresses
that it is the developement version instead of stable version.

I suspect Andreas might only respect my desire.
Don, I don't know how you read this thread carefully or not
and it is rather difficult for me to explain full story in
short but, at least, I accept Andreas' NMU with pleasure.
Further, it is an examination period in Univ. of Japan and
untill the middle of August, I'll have almost no time to maintain
the package.

I think Andreas is seriously involved in the the maintenance
of both, much more seriously than the present maintainers.
(sorry on my part, but as I explained above.)

But I think the situation looks too ambiguous yet.

They will, no worries about that. The issue you can still have is that
something might decide to change the brightness just before shutdown, and
THAT changed brightness would be the one you'd get when you power up.

But apparently, nobody broke things that much yet ;-)

If you're filing bugs, you need to file them against the right
package. If they're in the word lists included in scowl, then it's
obviously not scowl's problem. File them against iamerican if you
must.

Filing bugs about words that already exist in the wordlists
distributed because you're too lazy to fix your script is an
inexcusable waste of everyone's time.

Thanks for pointing that out. The corresponding thread on
bug-autoconf is here:
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.sysutils.autoconf.bugs/6149

Thus far, no fix has been posted to bug-autoconf list by one of
the Autoconf maintainers or pushed to the autoconf Git
repository. When one of those happens, I'll apply it to the
Debian package (in experimental, for now).

(I now feel more justified in not uploading 2.62 to unstable than
I did before.)

Bug#490891: filezilla: Unacceptable password saving behavior

2008-07-14 Thread Dimitar Kavlakov
Package: filezilla
Version: 3.0.11.1-1
Severity: important

The program silently saves as plain text in it's preferences folder all used
passwords including even ssh ones. They are expected to be manually deleted
by the user, using menu option that works only when no connection is
established. No warning of any kind is issued before saving the password and
no options can be found in the preferences dialog to prevent passwords from
being written to the disk.

I know that FileZilla is originally Windows program and as such it's
developers may see this behavior as acceptable or even expected. If they
don't want to fix it adding install time warning to the Debian package may
be appropriate.

This patch does fix the bug for Python 2.5. Unfortunately, it also
breaks pychecker for Python < 2.5.

I did talk with upstream. I'll submit an SF bug, and I'll plan to

Because it's something that should be resolved prior to release, and
probably should even be RC. It certainly isn't the kind of breakage
that should be introduced in an NMU.

We definetly don't need to release with the lynx-cur transition
package, since we've never released with it.[1] Furthermore, by
switching to lynx-cur, you instantly break local configurations in
/etc/lynx for no real gain.

By uploading a lynx binary package which was a transition, you *did*
effectively hijack the lynx package, whether you meant to or not. It's
certainly not Kohda's responsibility to deal with any of the breakage
resulting.

This is the sort of change that should not be made in an NMU without
the explicit blessing of the maintainer of both packages concerned
unless you plan on hijacking, adopting, or being seriously involved in
the maintenance of both.

At the same time that such an upload is made, a request for removal of
the lynx-cur or lynx package should also have been made, coupled with
the triaging and possible reassignment of lynx-cur or lynx bugs to the
new set of binary packages.

Don Armstrong

1: Transitioning in unstable would be nice, but it's certainly not
required, and could easily be handled by a tiny source stub package
which did not transition.

look and the lookup of flyspell use the wordlist; dict does not, and
flyspell doesn't use it when it's doing spell checking.

AFAIK, there's no way to get dict or flyspell to use the wordlist,
since they're doing completely different things.

Bug#463260: apt-utils: apt-ftparchive caches hashes too aggressively?

2008-07-14 Thread Joey Korkames
My apt repository suffers from this bug too. It is very annoying to manually
blow away the cache db's and have them rebuild after an upload overwrites
and existing file.

I took a look at ftparchive/cachedb.cc in apt 0.5.28.6 (the sarge version
that is purported to work correctly), 0.5.4 (an intermediate version between
sarge and etch) and 0.6.46.4 (the current etch version). Without having any
particular C skills, it is not apparent to me why the overwritten
packages files are not having their sizes/timestamps recached.

using "db4.4_dump -p whatever.db", I am able to see the plaintext
package control data in the berkely db. According to cachedb.cc, the :st
keys contain the filesize and timestamps. They are not human readable
however and I can't get apt-ftparchive to give verbose output on
manual invocation so I cannot debug further.

Thank you Andrzej,

They're different versions of the patch, that's why -3 works different
that Jamie's patch :)

I will unapply Bas's patch in favor of Jamie's patch then. I really had
no time to test it, anyway I will not build a binary for it until I got
it tested at least a little during this week.

Bug#490887: Incorrect ordering of kernels in /boot/grub/grub.cfg

2008-07-14 Thread Kevin Shanahan
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.96+20080626-1

It looks like the logic for ordering the installed kernels in the list
generated by update-grub is not working correctly.

On one machine I had installed kernel 2.6.25.7 and then later
2.6.25.10. When I rebooted, expecting the new kernel to come up,
2.6.25.7 came up instead.

If your auth.log is world readable, something is wrong on your system.
auth.log is designed exactly for information like this, and is designed
to be relatively secret on purpose.

Given that, I'm not convinced this is actually a bug at all, but I'll
leave that decision to the maintainers - I'm just going to lower the
severity.

Bug#490885: debhelper: dh addon interface enhancement proposal - command alias support

2008-07-14 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: debhelper
Version: 7.0.15
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hello,

I have been exploring ways to replace my customized CDBS setup with a new
debhelper v7 dh tool. CDBS offers custom build system extenstion points via
hooks and specially named variables. Hence you can write your own common
customized build system based on CDBS.

If I understand correctly, dh sequence addons are supposed to provide such
extensibility point. However, I found them limited in a few ways. Basically,
addon author cannot manipulate what arguments are passed to the individual
sequence commands. debhelper defaults are not always what is wanted.
Therefore, I think there is a need to extend addon interface with the command
which would allow the addon to specify arguments to be passed to the
individual dh_* helper programs. Actually, I went one step further and propose
support for command aliases. This way dh can be made to run different real
command when executing a specific sequence command (which then becomes the
alias (or the identifier) for the real command and its arguments). You may ask
how aliases are different than a few calls to insert_{after,before}() and
remove_command(). Well:

1. Setting the alias does not change command position(s) in the sequences.
This feature could also be implemented via replace_command() call.

2. Aliases can be particularly useful to replace standard dh_program
implementations with custom scripts without breaking existing
until/after/before parameters. For example, maybe I want to use my own set of
custom dh_auto_* scripts to support a weird build system. Then I could
implement a single dh_auto_weirdbuildsystem script which would handle
configure/build/install/clean switches and map them to the respective standard
dh_auto_* sequence commands. Without alias support, I would have to write 4
different scripts (or create symlinks) like dh_auto_configure_weirdbuildsystem
dh_auto_build_weirdbuildsystem etc. since dh sequence commands need to have
unique name.

3. Among other advantages, ability for addon to specify what custom arguments
should be passed to the individual debhelper programs, allows addons to
implement some sort of automagic like CDBS does, e.g. auto docs etc.

The attached patch is the implementation of this proposal. Only one new addon
API is added (set_alias_command()) and unless it was called from the addon,
behaviour of the patched dh should not be any different than behaviour of the
unpatched dh.

Bug#490884: init script should not try to load module when KVM support is compiled in the kernel

2008-07-14 Thread Elmar Hoffmann
Package: kvm

On a kernel that has KVM support statically compiled in, the init

It would be nicer if it checked whether KVM already was available

Bug#490882: munin-node: munin fails to graph some charts when nfsd daemon is disabled

2008-07-14 Thread Thomas Harding
Package: munin-node
Version: 1.2.5-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Munin "graph server" quit session when nfsd daemon is disabled
*and* /etc/munin/plugins/nfsd still exists, resulting incomplete
informations on the machine (ie, df_inode is not filled).

I guess munin-node outputs "xxvalue [really nothing]" in "fetch"
operation.

So, a workaround I found (verified) Is to not output line at all when
the value is null, so the answer to "fetch nfsd" is an "RFC 822" style
dot when nfsd daemon does not run.

The drawback is that you have to check the last update timestamp on the
graph (on the web server) for nfsd.

We may also set "0" as value, but I think it will be more confusing, and
more, not exact.

A workaround will be to set a new "boolean" value, maybe "nfsd.active".

Note I didn't re-link nfs_client to /etc/munin/plugins, so the problem
could be the same for it.

So, here is the patch:

Ahah, indeed! Removing the slash fixes things...

The variable declaration has been in my /etc/profile for many years, so I've
forgotten where I got it from. I imagine it was from the Squid documentation;
the Squid FAQ still uses a slash at the end of the _proxy values - see "Lynx
and Mosaic manual configuration" in /usr/share/doc/squid/CompleteFaq.gz in
the squid package.

Feel free to fix, close or reassign ;-)

Stephen

Bug#479709: Same here

2008-07-14 Thread Joergen Bergmann

Package: linux-image-2.6.25-2-amd64
Version: 2.6.25-6

Hi,

with the migration of kernel 2.6.25-6 from unstable to testing this
error is spreading to many machines.

Because this error and it's patch are known since may, this migration to
testing should have been avoided, for my understanding.
(I also run into LILO troubles/kernel panic with initrd #487421,
large-memory in lilo.conf fixed this for me)

Maybe some warnings or hints would be fine, before installing this kernel.

Disabling HPET in Bios fixed the problem for me.

Will this problem be fixed in 2.6.25-7, which is already in unstable
linux-source?

best regards

Jörgen

selecting this one shows it's the 6.05 one, so I'm not sure exactly
what's wrong. Could you maybe try to start emacs with
"--no-init-file", and see if you still see this problem ?

Bug#490879: qa.debian.org: qa.d.o/orphaned.html should have a link to packages DDPO

Severity: wishlist

Hello,
DDPO has a lot of information, useful when you're in the process to
adopt/do a QA upload of a package, so have a link from[1] to the DDPO
page of those packages would be really helpful.

tomv_w kindly created a page[2] to read orphaned.txt and create a link to

http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?packages=pkg_1%20...%20pkg_n

but the wml[3] that generates that package is perl, and I'm not speaking
perlish (if not I'd have provided a patch).

Thanks in advance,

I was referring to this log snippet:

So it's A) afaict.

It this is a driver bug or hardware limitation, I don't know.

it may be geographically closer, but i get better bandwidth from
there. i preffer to download from france or germany - it is closer and
faster. e.g. the links to Romania which is next to us go to Frankfurt
and back...

>> Security-upstream: security.debian.org

for ubuntu i have released the checks for certain networks, i have
tried but there is no difference how much bandwidth is set it always
gets full...

>> local loop is unlimited
> How much is "unlimited" ? :)

:)

i have two bonded nics. considering that 1gbps is 800mbit in reality
and some disbalance on the bonding, lets say my max is 1.5gbps
although i am not sure the machine will stand on multiple scattered
requests at such rates

anyways i use combined nginx+apache setup and i may say that
performance is 5-6 times better than apache. currently apache is used
only for fancy indexing.

on ubuntu mirror i have had ~220mbit peak on release times and the
bottleneck was disk. i have changed it but i will not know what will
happen until next release.

> We will take care of the pushing stuff, once the status of ftp.bg.d.o is

indeed i preffer not to mirror from there... i use ubuntu for desktop
and debian for servers for years so i may say i have had less problems
with the ludost.net mirror, but it is not full. if it was all ok, i
would not have taken the burden to support one more mirror. anyways i
prefer not to speak bad for the guys who maintain ftp.bg.d.o - with
mirrors more is better, not to mention that personally i have used
ftp.bg.d.o for so long time :)

kind regards,
b.

Can you try the following? Without the ipv6 perl stuff,

1. make a backup copy of your mrtg.conf
2. change all @localhost to @127.0.0.1

Does the issue remain?

- Adam

PS. Since you are using etch, what version of mrtg are you using? The
one from Etch or the current one?

Bug#490877: bind9 does not depend on the version of libbind9

2008-07-14 Thread Bob McElrath
Package: bind9
Version: 1:9.4.2-10
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Because bind9 does not depend on libbind9, it will happily use an old
version of libbind9 (in my case, libbind9-9.4.1-1+b1 with bind
9.4.2-10).

This causes a segfault after running for some time with a log message
  Jul 13 22:26:00 moya named[27422]: rbtdb.c:1174: REQUIRE(prev > 0) failed
Jul 13 22:26:00 moya named[27422]: exiting (due to assertion failure)
and surely causes other serious errors depending on the combination of
versions of these two packages actually installed.

Also note below that liblwres30 still has this old version. I don't
know if this will also cause problems. Since it appears to be compiled
with bind9, an version for its dependency should probably be added too.

Bug#488934: [SRM] stable upload for licq?

2008-07-14 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
licq in stable is currently unusable due to server-side changes (see bug
#488934). The patch is trivial and I have confirmed that it applies to
the stable version and works.

The question now is where to upload to?
Is this ok for a stable point release? Or should this go into volatile
instead?

For reference the debdiff I tested with:

No, I don't think so. I am only using the string "localhost" and a IP

I've changed the wording to be something pretty similar to what you
suggest. the changes will be in upstream 3.04.

Bug#490875: initramfs-tools: Incorrect warning message on upgrade if busybox is not installed

2008-07-14 Thread Chris Carr
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.92e
Severity: minor

When upgrading recently I noticed initramfs-tools give the following warning:

Warning: Busybox is required for successful boot!

... but it isn't. I shut down, and rebooted perfectly successfully.

This happened on two different machines (neither has busybox installed any
more). Both are fine.

Surely, if this warning were to be true, and busybox were truly necessary for a
successful boot, then initramfs-tools
should surely depend on busybox rather than merely recommending it.

Bug#490437: ncbi-tools6: FTBFS on GNU/kFreeBSD (due to dpkg-gensymbols)

2008-07-14 Thread Petr Salinger

Thanks for the report and suggested fix. AFAICT from quickly digging
through glibc's source, the low-level APIs readdb_preload uses should
be available on all Debian architectures (Linux or otherwise), so it
should actually be possible to use the same (full) symbols file
everywhere by doing away with a spurious #ifdef __linux. Is that
correct, or is there a genuine problem with using madvise() et al. on
non-Linux architectures?

You are right, glibc should either provide stub variant or a real
implementation. On GNU/kFreeBSD there is real interface for madvise().

Buildd logs are available at
http://buildd.debian-ports.org/build.php?arch=&pkg=ncbi-tools6

Bug#490873: patch to expose MAXSYSID for ssmtp as MinUserId config option

2008-07-14 Thread Trevor Bowen

Package: ssmtp
Version: 2.61

The ssmtp header file contains a hard-coded cutoff to define system id's
versus user id's, which is 1000. This is sufficient for many systems,
but often user ids dip below this limit for other systems. For example,
on a system I partially administer, I have several legacy user ids that
are well below 1000, like 220, 383, etc.

For such cases, it is convenient to expose the header definition for
MAXSYSID as a ssmtp.conf setting. The following tiny patch (ssmtp.c and
ssmtp.conf) exposes this setting. The convention is exposed as a
minimum user id setting to enable a "round number" of 1000 as the
default, instead of 999 as used by ssmtp.h.

I have found this helpful for my system. Maybe others will find it
helpful also. I hope you will consider adding this patch to the mainline.

(BTW, I am a Gentoo user. Sorry for the email submission.)

Thanks,

Trevor

Well, yes, I still think the same applies. Dropping a note to
basically say that "something must be configured for this software to
work" is still debconf abuse, IMHO.

Peopel installing the package are expected to read the needed
documentation to know how and if it (or something else) should be
configured to work.

So, yes, I think this belong to README.Debian.

Bug#490869: libnss-ldap: etch->lenny upgrade problems, uri/ssl behavior changed

2008-07-14 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: libnss-ldap
Version: 261-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

i just tried upgrading one of my etch machine to lenny.
I reinstalled it from scratch, and copied few configuration
files (using FAI).

Relevant content of /etc/libnss-ldap.conf:
---
uri ldaps://ldapserver.mydomain.com
ldap_version 3
tls_cacertfile /etc/ssl/certs/SMP_Root_Certification_Authority.pem
---

It was working great, connection was made using SSL.
Now it connects using TLS instand of SSL, which fails on my
network.

Adding:
---
ssl on
---

resolves problem.

I wonder why, because manpage of libnss-ldap.conf documents
old behavior.

I had exactly the same issue with pam_ldap.conf (adding "ssl on"
resolved problem).

Bug#490870: gdebi: pulls in unnecessary depends

2008-07-14 Thread Jon Dowland
Package: gdebi
Version: 0.3.5debian1
Severity: normal

I'm using gdebi behind "game-data-packager" (in pkg-games
svn).

game-data-packager builds a .deb which Provides: doom-wad
and Depends: doom-engine.

Prboom is the only package in the archive which satisfies
doom-engine, so invoking gdebi on this .deb causes it to
install prboom.

However, prboom Depends: on doom-wad, which this .deb
provides. Gdebi ignores this and satisfies that dependency
with a package from the archive: either freedm or
doom-wad-shareware (depending on if you have non-free
enabled or not).

2008-07-14 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Package: cdparanoia
Version: 3.10.0+debian-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I want to make sure that when reading a disk that there are no errors.
I'm currently using the options "-X -z". It seems to be allowing me
to rip tracks with an "!" in it, which isn't what I wanted.

I have no idea if those options are muttually exclusive. They seem to
be about the "V" error which I didn't get.

When listening to the track, I hear the same few samples repeated
several time for a few seconds. (Using -Z actually gave the best
results.)

Bug#490868: select(2): timeout value description much less obvious than it should be

2008-07-14 Thread Andreas Mohr
Package: manpages-dev
Version: 3.02-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello all,

man 2 select states:

"
timeout is an upper bound on the amount of time elapsed before
select()
returns. It may be zero, causing select() to return immediately. (This
 is
useful for polling.) If timeout is NULL (no timeout), select() can
block
   indefinitely.
"

This... is... confusing.
aka "what the heck is the difference between timeout zero and timeout NULL!?!?"

"It may be zero" should thus definitely be changed into something like
"the timeout value represented by the timeval struct may be zero"
to make sure that people grok the difference between a NULL _pointer_ and a
zero _representation_ of a struct.

This all considering that this is indeed how select(2) works (haven't
actually verified it myself recently).

Thanks for your much needed docu work,

Andreas Mohr

Bug#490865: emacs-goodies-el: Make markdown-mode generate real HTML for previewing

2008-07-14 Thread Hilko Bengen
Package: emacs-goodies-el
Version: 29.3-2
Tags: patch
Severity: wishlist

In markdown mode, the (markdown) and (markdown-preview) functions
calls /usr/bin/markdown to create HTML. This only creates tags for the
content, but not and tags that should surround the
content for proper XHTML.

I was able to help myself by using defadvice...

  (defadvice markdown
(after decorate-xhtml activate)
"Add proper XHTML headers and footers to markdown output"

(save-excursion
  (set-buffer "*markdown-output*")
  (goto-char (point-min))
  (insert "\n"
  "\n\n\n\n\n"
  "\n\n")
  (goto-char (point-max))
  (insert "\n"
  "\n"
  "\n")))

... but the proper solution would probably involve redefining the
markdown function:

  (defun markdown ()
"Run markdown on the current buffer and preview the output in another
buffer."
(interactive)
(if (and (boundp 'transient-mark-mode) transient-mark-mode mark-active)
(shell-command-on-region region-beginning region-end markdown-command
 "*markdown-output*" nil)
  (shell-command-on-region (point-min) (point-max) markdown-command
   "*markdown-output*" nil))
(save-excursion
  (set-buffer "*markdown-output*")
  (goto-char (point-min))
  (insert "\n"
  "\n\n\n\n\n"
  "\n\n")
  (goto-char (point-max))
  (insert "\n"
  "\n"
  "\n")))

Please consider adding this code.

Cheers,
-Hilko

I think it's fine to just have it be a bash script, given that it's just
an example. (I think this change would require a global search and
replace of $echo for echo.)

This is an ugly workarround. The recommendation would be to replace
all "echo -e" with "printf", but I think it was already decided to
change /bin/sh with /bin/bash just to avoid a big diff.

Thanks

Bug#490756: mirror submission for debian.ipacct.com

Can you check you are using the very last version of anonftpsync ?
http://www.debian.org/mirror/anonftpsync

Please delete ftp://debian.ipacct.com/debian-non-US/ which is deprecated
since the release of sarge, a long time ago.

hurd-i386 is not yet updated on ftp.bg.debian.org, but once this is
done, that may be better to mirror from a closer/faster server (for
example ftp.hu.debian.org or ftp.ro.debian.org)

BTW, it gives us (the mirror team) a clearer view of the mirrors
dependancy.

It is very slow from outside, is that possible to raise this limit a
bit, at least to allow checks in good conditions ?

How much is "unlimited" ? :)
1Gbps ?

We will take care of the pushing stuff, once the status of ftp.bg.d.o is
clarified with hurd-i386.

Thanks for mirroring Debian and best regards,

Bug#485465: battle for the brightness

2008-07-14 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
reassign 485465 linux-2.6
retitle 485465 thinkpad-acpi: races on brightness change on a R50e
found 2.6.14-1
tag 485465 upstream
forwarded 485465 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
owner [EMAIL PROTECTED]
thanks

Synopsis: recently, brightness started acting up on R50e. Something is
racing with the firmware. Userspace attempts to support brightness are new,
and might be part of the equation, as misguided attempts to do it by
enabling thinkpad brightness hot-keys without fully disabling the BIOS can
make the problem far easier to hit. The sysfs backlight interface seems to
be more prone to trigger the race. A possible in-firmware race caused by
thinkpad-acpi is the main suspect at this point. That behaviour is present
since ibm-acpi 0.12a, kernel 2.6.14, but probably nothing was tripping it
before.

On Thu, 26 Jun 2008, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
> Ah, this workaround finally worked:

Brightness settings on thinkpads ARE supposed to last through reboot and
power off, as long as you keep the NVRAM up-to-date. Thinkpad-acpi does so
in brightness_mode=2 and brightness_mode=3. It should always come back in
whatever brightness it was when you shut it down.

Do I understand correctly, and now that you're using brightness_mode=2, you
see no weird brightness changes when you lauch xdm, and your brightness keys
work just fine?

The R50e (from the ACPI tables you sent me) has exactly the same ACPI code
for brightness as the T43 and other ThinkPads of the T4x/R5x era. It
natively does what brightness_mode=2 does. The driver default,
brightness_mode=3, is something that I got from the previous maintainer of
ibm-acpi. It looks like it is time to rethink that code.

So, we have some sort of race, here. And brightness_mode=2 works around it.
I will look more into it, but unless I manage to reproduce this mess in my
T43, it won't be easy to root out the REAL reason for the breakage.

Jidanni, since brightness_mode=2 is working just fine for you, please
continue using it. It *is* supposed to work well on your box. In fact, one
of the things I will be trying to find out now is what kind of thinkpad
*requires* brightness_mode=3, because it looks like brightness_mode=2 is a
far saner default, even if that means accessing the CMOS NVRAM all the time
(which is expensive, and used to require disabling interrupts).

I will claim this bug for the thinkpad-acpi brightness change race, since
most of the baggage in it deals with that and your issue with brightness
"memory" across reboots seems to be solved.

For now, I will reassign the bug to the kernel, and mark it upstream (since
I am handling it, anyway).

Bug#229357: New Build-Options field and build-arch option, please review

I most certainly do not rely on dpkg-buildpackage setting anything. I
call dpkg-architecture directly, which is also what's in our best practice
documents.

DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE ?= $(shell dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE)
DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE ?= $(shell dpkg-architecture -qDEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE)

I would consider packages that didn't do that and just assumed that those
variables were already set to be buggy.

> The same is expected with default values of builder/linker flags now

Yeah, that bothered me too. I made a perhaps poor tactical decision to
not fight about it since it seemed that it had a lot of momentum and I
couldn't think of specific problems other than the one that we ran into.
But this is going beyond setting some defaults that are already set in
nearly all of our packages.

I must say, I really do not like this direction. debhelper and cdbs and
similar sytsems are the places to provide this help where people want to
use it, in my opinion. We have a lot of past experience with that and we
have the compatibility level to handle smoothing transitions. (And to
provide a way for people to never transition, I admit, and I see where
that's the problem that you're solving, but I prefer that problem to the
problems introduced by the instability of having the package build
infrastructure change the input to the builds without coordination with
the package.)

Note that if you're requiring a package to participate by adding something
to Build-Options in debian/control, you have the same transition problem,
so I think that it's pretty equivalent to changing debian/rules; it's only
when you want packages to be able to change with external defaults that
you get the transition advantage.

I don't want to underestimate the transition advantage -- that is pretty
significant. I do understand the problem that you're trying to solve, and
I understand that what I'm proposing is going to make transitions a lot
harder.

> Ok makes sense. In the case of hardening, it means that we have to
> modify each and every package to enable it though.

Well, not if you can do it via debhelper, which now with version 7 is much
more likely. Similarly with cdbs. But in general, yes.

For hardening, I think this is a feature; the flags aren't ones that can
just be applied to every package without breaking things.

> I suppose that the people pushing this proposal would like to have the

I think we've already found that this isn't a great approach for hardening
options in particular, since they break too many packages (and those
packages are not necessarily broken; in some cases it's the compiler
that's broken, or the assumptions behind the options).

I agree with the benefit, but I think it's better to implement that sort
of thing in the packaging tools that already do that sort of magic and
which we already have a way of dealing with (compatibility levels in
debhelper, for example), and which continue to work with debian/rules
build.

I'm somewhat disturbed by this. Until this discussion, I had no idea that
you were planning on deprecating debian/rules build and expecting everyone
to use dpkg-buildpackage to get a reproducible build. I'm not even sure
how to use dpkg-buildpackage to do the equivalent of just running
deb

This would probably work out better something like:

"A general purpose text viewer, designed for reading long documents
such as novels"

In particular, s/txt/text/g

And "supports": you want to refer to the software package in the 3rd
person singular. This is probably down to taste, but I would also
capitalize these lines.
