Bug#515556: emacs22-common: font-lock-comment-face doesn't work on 8-color terminals with dark background

This is a deliberate decision, see the NEWS file:

,
| ** `font-lock-comment-face' no longer differs from the default on
| displays with fewer than 16 colors and dark background (e.g. older
| xterms and the Linux console). On such displays, only the comment

| `font-lock-comment-delimiter-face'). To restore the old appearance,
| customize `font-lock-comment-face'.
`

IIRC the reason for this change is that RMS complained that "red on
black" was too hard to read on the Linux console, although people who
have better eyes or brighter screens seem to disagree. The
emacs-snapshot package from [1] that I use has reverted to the old
behavior to highlight the full comments instead of only the delimiters.

Cheers,
   Sven

Strange, it is well found on several of my machines where it is present.

Given all the elements you have described, I cannot see any reason why
rkhunter doesn't warn you.
Can you please forward the log file of 'rkhunter --enable filesystem'?

I have removed this commented entry.

It could be fixed in a point release, though only with a targeted fix
(no new upstream version).

Which of xserver-xorg-video-radeon, libgl1-mesa-dri or

during that upgrade? Can you isolate which of them introduced the
problem?

Bug#515563: Please remove package mped

2009-02-15 Thread Angel Ortega
Package: mped
Version: 3.3.17-1
Severity: critical
Tags: lenny

(Note: I'm upstream author for the mped package).

Lenny has been released containing a version of the Minimum Profit text
editor that is from 2005 and that can cause severe information lossage due
to an incorrect handling of UTF-8 encoding.

An RC bug was filed (#514096) against lenny to suggest a package update or
deletion, but it was ignored and this dangerous version entered the stable
release.

As there is nothing that can be done by now, I urge the archive masters to
delete this +4 year old, dangerous package.

Regards,

Why the /experimental in the bug title? The package is only in

In /ports/i386/index.fr.html, x86 is translated to ix86, which is neither x86

I have a sneaking suspicion this bug has been fixed, probably years ago.

   * ip6.arpa is used (not IP6.INT)

There is no -n option.

This is not specific to the temporary directory.

You are right, though I am quite confident that upstream would pay
attention to this.
I hence reopen the bug and will forward it upstream to get their
opinion.

I'm pretty sure the reason is that there is no foreground color given
for this case. (Perhaps because adding one with customize fixed the
problem ;-P.) Anyway, note the missing `:foreground' property:

+During testing with 15 concurrent drbd resources several dopd crashes have been

Carsten Munk has specifically requested that UnrealIRCd not be included
in Debian, and will likely be hostile towards it's inclusion.

Secondly, UnrealIRCd uses OpenSSL for SSL support, and non DFSG-free
versions of the MD5 algorithm for hostcloaking. Both of these DFSG
violations would be required for inclusion into Debian, as they are also
a GPL license violation.

There is also questions concerning why you would want to package
something that has effectively a dead upstream, and many code flaws
which could result in security issues in the future.

Andrew Church's IRCServices is dead upstream, other than "security
fixes", and those will most likely stop within Squeeze's release
lifecycle. Do you intend to maintain it yourself?

If not, I strongly urge you to not package this.

Bug#515550: xmlstarlet ed: wish for --in-place

2009-02-15 Thread Trent W. Buck
Package: xmlstarlet
Version: 1.0.1-2
Severity: wishlist

GNU sed has an --in-place option so that I can do something like

sed -rsi s/foo/bar/ *.txt

But xmlstarlet doesn't, so instead I have to use a loop:

for i in *.html
do  xmlstarlet ed ... $i >$i~ &&
mv $i~ $i
done

It would be nice if, like sed and ed, xmlstarlet could do this little
bit of file writing and moving internally.

Bug#514943: network-manager: wired connection remains with wireless associated and no cable

2009-02-15 Thread Drew Parsons
I think I've worked out what the pattern of behaviour is.

At boot up, nm brings up eth0, even if the cable is not inserted. it's
like it's not checking the state of the cable or something (or the
e1000e driver is reporting it incorrectly). This is the buggy state.
The wired connections are shown by the nm applet to be "active".

When I plug the cable in, nm brings up eth0 (or leaves it up). The
wired connection is active, that's how it should be.

Then when I pull out the cable, the empty cable socket is acknowledged,
such that nm brings down the eth0 interface. The nm applet shows the
wired connections as "inactive" (greyed out).

After this, I can pull the cable in and out, and nm brings up eth0 or
closes it down appropriately. Normal behaviour is in place.

So the problem appears to be with the initial state only. The system
starts off behaving as though it thinks the cable is plugged in, until
it is in fact plugged in. After this it's able to correctly recognise
when the cable is plugged in or not.

Bug#508432: minimum testcase

2009-02-15 Thread Sébastien Aperghis-Tramoni

Martín Ferrari a écrit :

Hi, after working on this bug for a while, I was able to distill a
minimum code that triggers the segfault. The callback routine invoked
from pcap_loop needs to set a signal handler that it's used during the
callback.

In the fwknopd code, this happens when calling iptables, which
triggers

a SIGCHLD on exit, but can happen with any signal.

I can't reproduce the problem using your test case, either with
Net::Pcap 0.16 on OSX, Net::Pcap 0.04 or 0.16 on Debian etch x86.

Meanwhile this is solved, see the attached patch that's useful as a
workaround for fwknopd

Is this patch reversed? The destination already looks like the
version of fwknopd I downloaded (1.9.10).
If that's the case, I'm not sure to understand how this fixes the
problem.

Bug#508432: [libnet-pcap-perl] Fwknop fails with a segmentation fault on i386

last time I did, I saw no such warnings. Which version of gcc, Perl,
libpcap and Net::Pcap are you using? I'll try tomorrow to compile
Fwknop

on my Linux station at work and see if I can reproduce this.

Here is the log of the build:

perl;ver=0.16-1;arch=amd64;stamp=1226616642

http://buildd.debian.org/build.cgi?pkg=libnet-pcap-perl

Ok, you're using a much more recent version of GCC than I do. Nice,
but "fixing" the "value computed is not used" warnings means checking
each and every call to hv_store(), also making the code much less
readable.

The "pointer [...] differ in signedness" warnings are here since a
long time, but don't seem to be a problem. For a few, it seems to be
a case of throwing some (u_char *) casts at the appropriate places,
but I'd prefer to double check that it doesn't change anything at the
binary level before applying these.

Bug#515546: xserver-xorg: keys stick when switching consoles

2009-02-15 Thread john.lindgren
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+18
Severity: normal

If I hold a key down at the moment that I switch away from an X console,
the server misses the key-release signal and keeps auto-repeating key-press
events until I switch back. The easiest way to reproduce this is to type
"chvt 1" in a terminal window and press the enter key, holding it down for
just a moment until the screen blanks. Wait a few seconds, then switch back
to the X console. The terminal will be filled with empty prompts.

I suggest that the X server should immediately send key-release events for
all the keys that are held down at the moment the console is switched.

The metadata files are just files in version control, there should be
nothing special involved in converting them.

I think the main thing you'll want to take care about is changing /etc
from one repo type to the other w/o actualy deleting or checking out all
the files in it, as that would tend to break your system.

If you convert from a VCS like git that keeps track of executable bits
to one like darcs that does not, then old versions in the resulting
darcs repository will not have that info, presenting a further problem
if you tried to check them out. Once etckeeper knows you're using darcs,
it will record executable permissions in /etc/.etckeeper.

As far as I can see, the only etckeeper specific thing thing you'd need
to do is run 'etckeeper init' after converting the repository. But I've
never done this so I really can't tell. Looking forward to your patch to
the documentation. :-)

Severity: wishlist

Sometime in the next year I expect Darcs to require this library as a
build dependency. Therefore I would like it available as a Debian
package, but I don't really want to be responsible for maintaining yet
another package (hence and RFP not an ITP).

Packagers may wish to look into debian-cabal, a tool which produces
Debian packages directly from upstream Cabal packages. It looks like
it needs some work, though.

* Package name: haskeline
  Version : 0.6.1.1
  Upstream Author : Judah Jacobson
* URL : http://code.haskell.org/haskeline
* License : BSD3
  Programming Lang: Haskell
Description : A command-line interface for user input, written in Haskell

Haskeline provides a user interface for line input in command-line
programs. This library is similar in purpose to readline, but since
it is written in Haskell it is (hopefully) more easily used in other
Haskell programs.

Also, blobwars complains "there is no soundcard" when I run it.

and I see it's linked to ALSA. Of course, my laptop has
a sound card, with a typical ALSA driver. Left wondering if
this is some artifact of the sound support having been ripped

hey Jack! Thanks for the patch, I'd like to include this support as
well. However, I _think_ that we need to do it in a more global
way. Your patch sets up the client instance that is used in __main__,
but there are several other client instances used throughout the
code. This means that these options would only be set for the commit,
not for e.g., the source checkout/tagging.

One option is to rework NotifiedClient() - make it a class and have it
store the configuration for future instances. Another option is
to use a single client instance everywhere. I don't really like the
aesthetic of passing the client parameter around everywhere but, then
again, we're creating a new instance in nearly every function call and
that's pretty ugly as well. I suppose we could just make it a
global variable. What do you think?

Ok, here's the problem.

modem_main.c:976  function modem_main()
--
if (need_realtime) {
struct sched_param prm;
if(mlockall(MCL_CURRENT|MCL_FUTURE)) {
ERR("mlockall: %s\n",strerror(errno));
}
--

That chunk of code runs when slmodemd starts up; the modem_start() code
I mentioned in my last email runs when the modem is dialed. So, the
mlockall(MCL_FUTURE) is allowing only a very limited allocation of
memory after the setuid().

Here's a gdb log of me breaking execution right after the above code and
then running setuid() and malloc(); the first malloc(16384) works, but
the next ones fail.

Removing the MCL_FUTURE flag makes slmodemd work for me, as far as I can
tell. Remember that I don't have a phone line to test here. It gets past
the modem_start() code, at least, and behaves just like my binary that
has the privilege-dropping patch removed.

I don't know if that's an acceptable solution; locking all allocated
memory into RAM seems useful. Then again, I wouldn't really expect a
currently-running slmodemd process to get swapped out unless memory
constraints are extreme. I don't know the original rationale.

Bug#515534: /usr/sbin/saslauthd: /etc/init.d/saslauthd does not handle old defaults correctly

2009-02-15 Thread Ben Hutchings
Package: sasl2-bin
Version: 2.1.22.dfsg1-23
Severity: important
File: /usr/sbin/saslauthd

On upgrading to lenny, I found that saslauthd would no longer start.
Although README.Debian describes *optional* configuration of multiple
instances, the init script makes this configuration mandatory even if
only a single instance is required. If OPTIONS is not set then it
should assume that saslauthd's socket and state will appear in the
default directory (/var/run/saslauthd), but instead it fails. Also,
it should not warn that NAME is set if only a single instance is
configured.

Solution to what? To the package needing so little maintainance that it
is mistaken for neglect?

DPMT seems to mandate Subversion. I intend to switch to Git, to use
topgit.

Bug#515533: linux-2.6.26: tulip module handles dmfe cards (again)

2009-02-15 Thread Daniel Hornung
Package: linux-image-2.6-486
Version: 2.6.26+17
Severity: important

After upgrading to linux-2.6.26 from 2.6.18, one of my two network cards
stopped working. Closer examination showed lots of
"tulip_stop_rxtx() failed (CSR5 0xfc74 CSR6 0x2042202)"
messages. It seems that bug #405203 resurfaced again, but I was unable to add
a reply there since it's archived already. The workaround described there
(rmmod tulip; rmmod dmfe; modprobe dmfe) works for me. A quick diff of the two
kernel versions' modules.pcimap files shows that both dmfe and tulip claim
responsibility for the same devices (again):

Bug#515532: "minesweeper feature" vs. UNIX philosophy

2009-02-15 Thread David Orban

Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.11.1-4
Severity: wishlist

This is a wishlist item I filed in 2005.

The archived bug number is 300759. You can see the Debian report log
for this bug @ http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=300759.

After remaining silent for more than 3 years, Daniel Burrows
decided to close it in August 2008 without any discussion with
me (the submitter) or the members of the Debian community that were
in favor of that change.

Because it was archived, I had no other possibility to reply than to fill
it again.

So here is the message that I reveived from Daniel Burrows after 3 years:

" I don't know why this was never closed, but it has never been a bug
and it continues to not be a bug. There are enough real bugs that
there's no reason to keep this one open.

 Daniel
"

This is my reply:

"
This has been filed with a severity of wishlist. So you're actually right,
this is a wishlist item, as understood by Debian, rather than a bug, but we
already knew this, right?

The idea of removing useless game from a package manager software is
there to keep the number of bugs low, as in 'less useless code == less
bugs'.

As a package maintainer, you should probably focus yourself on fixing
actual bugs rather than arbitrarily closing wish requests to keep
the number of bugs artificially low. Doing this without any preceding
discussion with the submitter, even though the community seems to be
following the reasoning behind the wish is a nonsense and a lack of
respect. Especially in the context of a community based distribution
like Debian.

David Orban.
"

And this is my original submission:

"
I am wondering why the minesweeper feature has been included in packages
management software or its front-end.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that aptitude is meant to become an
important package in future Debian distributions (i.e. called from
debian-installer and maybe even considered as a replacement for dselect).

Part of the basics of UNIX philosophy is to build programs that do only
one thing and do it well. While it is obvious that such rules can
sometimes be overruled, I can't find good arguments for this in this
case. The whole system reliability depends on package such as this one
and for that reason it doesn't look very serious to bring additional
code, documentation and complexity for a feature which is neither
necessary nor related to package management.

IMHO, OS's mechanisms such as VTs should be used and minesweeper should
be in its own package. For specific hardware or custom built kernels
where VTs are not available, appropriate mechanisms should be used.

I would like to know both the community and the author opinions about
these thoughts. If one of them agrees, then the feature should probably
be removed.

Regards,

David Orban.
"

As can be seen, I was asking for a discussion with the community and
the maintainer and it seems that the maintainer is not really interested.

Bug#247337: [Fwd: Re: [Fwd: lives_0.9.8.10-1_powerpc.changes REJECTED]]

2009-02-15 Thread salsaman
OK. How long does approval normally take ?

Also, you should have checked the file list with me first. Libraries like:

./usr/lib/lives/plugins/playback/video/lives2lives_stream.a

./usr/lib/lives/plugins/playback/video/SDL.a

./usr/lib/lives/plugins/effects/realtime/weed/*.a

are redundant, because these are all dynamically linked at runtime, so
only the .so and .la versions are used.

You may want to bear this in mind for the next release.

Regards,
Gabriel.

Which video driver are you using? xserver-xorg-video-nv,
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau or xserver-xorg-video-nv?

I don't think that producing "[lines] of garbage" is a wishlist item. Exiftran
ought to at least spit out a warning and ask the user if he really wants to
continue. I say this as someone who has rotated an image and uploaded it
to the Internet before noticing the corruption.

Bug#515531: svn-buildpackage: --svn-tag "adding the URLs to the .../.svn/deb-layout to skip the check later" but file doesn't exist (should create it)

2009-02-15 Thread Sandro Tosi
Package: svn-buildpackage
Version: 0.6.23
Severity: normal

Hello,
while

$ svn-buildpackage --svn-tag --svn-tag-only

there's a line about

I: adding the URLs to the //.svn/deb-layout to skip the check later.

that's interesting, since on my slow line, the tag url check is slow, sadly no
error is printed out and

$ ls .svn/deb-layout
ls: cannot access .svn/deb-layout: No such file or directory

IMO svn-bp should create the file is it's missing, and update it accordinglt
when it's there.

Thanks,
Sandro

If I may suggest a solution, maintaining it in DPMT[1] could be a
solution: it provides co-maintainership (almost) for free, at least
for RC bugs or so.

Well my knowledge is not so big about rkhunter,... I'm just a user of

Generally I think: Security goes first, than comes the necessary time.
But on the other hand (so far) I've never seen any log output by
rkhunter -prpupd?! Where is it written to?
I just see some very small messages on stdout (or err).

Bug#515527: base: dual screen functionality does not work

2009-02-15 Thread Barry Horne
Package: base
Severity: important

I have attached dual wide screen monitors to my GeForce 9600GT graphics card.
After installation of Debian the PC
reboots and instead of GDM appearing I simply get a blank black screen.
Cntrl-Alt-Fx does not respond either. I
have discovered that disconnecting the second display does allow X (upon
reboot) to start normally, and the system
is quite usable with a single screen.

Sure?! At my system the whole process takes quite a long time...

errors or warnings If not,.. I would suggest against it.

Hmmm... "When all else fails, read the instructions."

On "http://www.backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=instructions"; it
says to do this:

wget -O - http://backports.org/debian/archive.key | apt-key add -

I did, and all is well...

debian/rules:

- -$(MAKE) distclean
+   test -f Makefile && $(MAKE) distclean || /bin/true

you are still ignoring make distclean errors.

Please check it before, as I don't feel like spending too much time on picwiz
if it is just to remove it in a few weeks.

eh? nothing here looks like being appropriate for a stable release update.

You have to ping the LCD IDE BIOS but then you either never need to cancel the
connection, or must turn on a controller to the SMTP device on a graphic back-
end of a login on the tool, so that from Windows 94 or from the options menu
within Outlook you can never open a laser head but then from the tools within

When you say 'usually', does that mean whohas can rely on it, or are
there many packages that don't fit this pattern?

Hi

I haven't heard anything about this still - I see Anibal has tried to
get hold of Dafydd about not having signed his advocation, but I haven't
heard anything from him in a while now, guess real life is in the way.
What next - is a single advocation acceptable, and do you need a new
changeset for it?

It would be really nice to get this out of the way.

Bug#515525: ODBC broken on Amd64

2009-02-15 Thread Adam Majer
Package: wine
Version: 1.1.14-0.1
Severity: normal

The ODBC is broken under AMD64 as Wine seems to try to load the 64-bit
unixODBC driver. Since Wine is compiled as a 32-bit app, this of
course fails.

The error message is:

[unixODBC]Driver Manager]Can't open lib '/usr/lib/odbc/psqlodbca.so':
/usr/lib/odbc/psqlodbca.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

I'm not certain there is a solution to this except to have ODBC
drivers as part of some 32-bit compatibility package.

I don't know how wine 64-bit will work. 64-bit Windows still has a
32-bit ODBC and 32-bit drivers so solution is not clear for
me. Upstream may know more about this.

yes, this looks good. libxul-unstable pkg-config should not provide
-fshort-wchar, so this fix should indeed be enough. And if it isn't,
it should be fixed in xulrunner itself.

We should be able to fix this now that cdebconf-newt-terminal exists and
does most of the work necessary to provide the chroot with a working
terminfo file for bterm. I'm reassigning this over to di-utils, which
needs to make use of that new plugin in order to fix this bug.
