1. Why should GroupDAV require mcrypt?

2. Was that a new installation or an update? In the later case, it's

The newer libpri just got into Unstable (yey!). The libpri-bristuffed 
hack is not used anymore as bristuff is not supported with newer versions

It was uploaded by Francois Marier, and he used i386.

Some arches like s390 still used 1.4.9-2, and failed with the same

Either that's a tunnel and they should get rid of it, or they need a

You should do your research better. Google is fully IPv6-enabled, and
it took only a ridicule amount of time to an undersized, part-time
team of Googlers to make it so.

 IPv6 addresses without risk of breaking things that already work.  If
 that were the case, perhaps they would.  Then we would have a viable
 path to an actual transition.

There is a transition path. It is being rolled out. It works.

It's actually easier to embrass IPv6 than it is to work against
it. Now if only people realized that.

I think you have no solid technical arguments against IPv6. It really
seems like you've been molested by a hurd of IPv6 addresses running
wild or something.

A few years ago, a fair number of bugs were still being worked out in
the v6 stacks pretty much everywhere and there were problems. Now it's
ancient history and things have been reliable for some time.

I've been running dual stack hosts since 2000. It was sometimes
unbearable in the first few years, but it's been *ages* since I've had
to deal with a v6-induced issue.

When I switch to a vt X crashes and restart without writing any info to logs.
Sometimes it just crashes and hangs on a scrambled screen, this random crash 
also happens when shutting down the computer.

Should this improve by using some package from experimental?


I see that this bug is attached to pwlib (currently ptlib) package (and 
ohphone depends on pwlib).


ptlib fixes many bugs with each release (I hope it is better and better 
:o)).  This bug should be fixed by upstream, so I want to inform them 
about it.


However, I cannot say to upstream that there was a bug with a version of 
several years ago.  I need to know if it applies to recent (last) 
release of ptlib, which is 2.6.1, currently in debian experimental.


The problem is that ohphone is not developed anymore (it seems to me), 
so how can I see that the bug still exists with recent versions?

and…) merely to satisfy requirements of wnb. However, some users (take me 
for instance) never use wnb and could happily live without Tcl (or Tk,

Please either loosen the dependency (i.e., only recommend tcl8.5, tk8.5, 
etc.) or split the package.

I would like to write code like

Since ferm doesn't have a loop construct itself, it would be - for
example - good to expand the backticks to call an external script
which creates ferm code which is then immediately interpolated:

`external-program`

with external-program being some binary which prints

chain INPUT interface eth0 saddr 192.168.8.27 DROP;
chain INPUT interface eth1 saddr 192.168.9.31 DROP;
chain INPUT interface eth2 saddr 10.3.44.2 DROP;

Alternatively, some means to directly write perl code into a ferm rule
file would be great.

At the moment, I do this with a hook which writes a file which is in
turn @included later, which does the job but is ugly.

What a coincidence! Yesterday I uploaded them to mentors.debian.net.

First of all version 1.2.3 has never been released, instead 1.3 is
used as initial package (which has been released yesterday, too).

I had the packaging done for quite some time by the way, but waited
for this release, since I contacted the author to fix bugs upstream
instead of using lots of debian specific patches (e.g. lintian
complained about wrong formed and missing manpages).

Suspend to RAM now works with linux-image-2.6.26-2-686 on my ASUS V6V.

The problem seems to be rather in the ATI video driver than in the 2.6.26-2-686 
kernel.
When first upgrading from linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 to linux-image-2.6.26-2-686,
I also upgraded the ATI driver for my Radeon X600 video card from 
ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64
to ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run, and suspend to ram stopped to work.
Now, I am back with ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64, and suspend to ram 
works fine again.
I also tested the new ATI driver with the previous kernel 2.6.26-1-686, and it 
fails as well.

Conclusion: blame the ATI driver, not the 2.6.26-2-686 kernel.

There is a bug in which windows are shown on top. It is possibly
related to me having a dual-monitor setup. To reproduce:
-Start firefox
-Start gnome terminal x2
-move the gnome terminals so there are one on each monitor, Iceweasel
 is on monitor 1.
-Advanced-Fullscreen the gnome terminal on monitor 2
-Advanced-Fullscreen the gnome terminal on monitor 1
-ALT-F3 unfulscreen the terminal on monitor 1
-Try to bring iceweasel in front of the terminal on monitor 1. (fails, bug)

It's an update. The trouble is that there is no application 'groupware'

The applet shows a strange layout ?? in the panel widget. It appeared
during the transition to X.org 1.6.

According to the keyboard preferences I have EEUU Dvorak (default) (EEUU)
and Poland Dvorak, Polish quotes in the quote keys (Pol), which is what I
already had. Then according to the groups menu in the applet I have EEUU and
Pol. However, when I left-click on the applet, or when I use the keyboard
binding to switch the layout (Lshift-Rshift in my case), it cycles through
EEUU, Pol, and ??.

The ?? layout behaves like a strange deadkeys layout. It seems to be
English, but the period key is a deadkey. Apostrophe and other keys which
are normally deadkeys, are not in this one.

Pressing one of the media keys, such as XF86AudioPlay, XF86HomePage, etc.,
causes the keyboard layout to be switched back to the default.

E.g. my default is EEUU, and I also have Pol. I have enabled the option so
each window has its own layout. If I switch a window (say Firefox, or Emacs
GTK) to Pol, and press one of the media keys, the layout reverts to EEUU.
Pressing one of those keys while the layout is EEUU has no visible effect to
the layout.

The media keys still perform their expected function. QT and XLib programs
such as Skype and xterm show the same behavior.

I'm sending this report to the keyboard applet, because that's what shows me
the layout change. I wouldn't know what component is ultimately responsible
for this behavior, so please forward the bug to it, if necessary.

To _generate_ rules from outside ferm, it would be good to have a hook
which is executed immediately when the line is read to allow things
like:

@include rules-created-by-ferm-hook;

I currently do this by inserting a dummy rule into a dummy chain:

chain dummy interface `ferm-hook-create-rules` NOP;
@include rules-created-by-ferm-hook;

while the scripts empty output prevents any rules from being actually
created.

I can't reproduce it either. I built the package on i386, amd64 and

 run it with HOME set to /nonexistent or somesuch.

I've committed a patch to use tmpdir() instead of $ENV{ HOME } (and

Bug#525690: phpbb3: default permissions break database restore and avatars uploading

/var/lib/phpbb3/store is not readable by the webserver user (www-data)
and therefore the restore functionality does not work.

The above mentioned folder should be chmod 770 instead of 730.

webserver user (www-data) and therefore avatars cannot be uploaded.

The above mentioned folders should be chowned www-data with permissions
to read and write to the folders.

Bug#525688: tries to use PostScript fonts even though those may be unavailable for specific font encodings

The dbk_fonts.sty file refers to a set of packages which,
apparently, request for some PostScript fonts to be used for
typesetting the document.  However, these fonts may be
unavailable for specific font encodings (such as T2A for
cyrillic), thus resulting in numerous ``Font shape undefined''
warnings while running LaTeX.

Consider, for example, two simplistic DocBook documents (one in
English and one in Russian) attached.  The English one could be
processed by dblatex just fine, while the Russian one results in
a number of messages like:

I just uploaded python-debian to PyPI[0].  I need current versions of
python-debian and due to bumped build-dependencies (like in this case
python-support) and sometimes changed rules files backports often
become a pain if the maintainers don't do them themselves.  Thus
I uploaded an egg there which I use with python-virtualenv.

Now to the request: it would be nice if python-debian could switch
to python-setuptools (from distutils) because the former is able to
generate those eggs.  The change is as simple as this and an additional
build dependency:

  from distutils.core import setup
to
  from setuptools import setup
.

Additionally it would be nice if you could include the following two
keyword arguments in setup.py:

This efax bug includes a patch to initialize ifile and ovfile to
zeros. I just wanted to comment that you don't have to write out the
while struct of zeros, because missing values are automatically
zeroed. So, instead of:

IFILE ifile = { 0, 0, {}, 0, 0, 0, 0, {}, 0, 0, {}, 0, 0, 0, 0 } ;

you can just write:

IFILE ifile = { 0 } ;

Hi guys,

sorry for the long silence.

I'm currently not able to reproduce the bug. I tried to start wmnetload
with different interfaces and to bring up and down these interfaces
manually but I did not experience any crash. Valgrind reports the same
warnings noticed by Rogério. I'm running wmnetload through gdb and
waiting the segfault.

Are you aware of any deterministic trigger for the segfault?

Another strange issue is that when running gnome-volume-properties there is the 
first tab related to the mass storage devices which disappeared.

This bug should prevent gnome to enter testing as it is a serious regression.

I would prefer to keep this feature, even if not used on Debian and
Ubuntu. Some users may be relying on it.

 In my experience, if users want something, they will get it with some
 worse means. If we do not let them run login directly, then they will
 run telnet instead which is probably much more wasteful; they will not
 use exec login or su, because are not familiar with those. There is
 not much point in protecting users from own foolishness.



 But mainly, exec login cannot possibly work in a PAM environment, but
 will fail/die and lose the user session; users should not be tricked
 into doing that. Presumably the user logged in with login (e.g. telnet,
 may not apply for ssh or xterm); then login done a fork before running
 the shell; any utmp entry refers to the PID of the parent login.

I don't get your point.
At least when login was setuid on debian, exec login used to work on PAM
environments.

 Incidentally, seems rather wasteful to have login waiting to
 pam_close_session and telnetd waiting to clear utmp.

What would you recommend?

There are some UNIX where pam_close_session has to be done by the caller
of login. But this requires a general policy to be applied consistently on
many packages. I don't think this will be possible to enforce this on the
tools used in Linux. So having login wait to pam_close_session is
currently the only solution.

Regarding UTMP, I don't know if it would be valid to close the entry on
exit. Even if login did it, I'm also not sure telnetd wouldn't have to do
it again anyway (there are other login implementation).

I am  interested into getting Pyjamas  into Debian. I  have retitle this
bug as an ITP  which is what you should have done  to ensure that no one
else is working on  it. As you are the owner of  the bug, this now means
that you intent to package Pyjamas.

I have looked at your package  and... hum... there are a lot of problems
with it.  There is  a lot of  work to do  to be  able to upload  them to
Debian. Are you still interested to package it yourself? This means that
you would  have to read  the new maintainer  manual and also  the debian
python policy. If yes, contact me, I will help you.

The other  way to  go would be  to hand  me the ITP  and let  me package
pyjamas.  If you  are not  really  interested to  package softwares  for
Debian, this  would be the easiest  choice. We can  also co-maintain the
package.

Actually, now that I saw the m.d.n package, yours seems to be better, so I'll
archive mine.

There is no need to upload a -2 version - simply modify the package and keep the
version number -1. It should only be incremented if the lower version is in the
archive already.

I suggest writing an RFS to the debian-mentors mailing list according to the
template on m.d.n.

It's totally false! The version in testing doesn't work!


There are two issues involved here:

1.) gnome-volume-manager had to be updated for the changes in the 
ConsoleKit D-Bus API (this is what this bug is about)

Please remember, that g-v-m does more, then just automounting.

2.) gnome-volume-manager does no longer do the automounting itself, as 
this is done by nautilus not. Unfortunately, nautilus = 2.24 has not 
yet entered testing yet (due to various reasons, like library 
transitions, RC bugs in nautilus etc).
I should have placed a Conflicts: nautilus ( 2.24) in 
gnome-volume-manger, to avoid this unpleasant situation for testing 
users, where g-v-m is updated, but nautilus not.

I'm really sorry for this inconveniene.
Maybe I should do that anyway, even if it doesn't help the testing 
users, which already have upgraded g-v-m, as I don't know, when the new 
nautilus enters testing.



Still, with regard to 1.) the bug is fixed in g-v-m.

Isn't it what chpasswd already do?

 It's a bit related to #505640 imho, but instead of all the quirks to get
 the encrypted password back from pam just depend on the right
 pam.d/common-password. Pipe the unencrypted password to passwd and
 let pam do his job.

This will require the same quirks.

Pam is just simply not ready to receive the password at any time. The
password might just be dropped from stdin before it even tries to read it.

A conversation function is needed to communicate with PAM.

xfce4-session depends on fortune-mod -- i never used that app and
judging from the description it is far from being crucial to the
functionality of xfce4-session.

therefor it should be a recommedation rather than a dependency: a) it
creates other dependencies and b) it takes up space un necessarily.

since debian is a about choice, nobody should be forced to install a
silly und rather useless package. and since debian is supposed to run on
all kind of devices, such unnecessary dependencies create problems for
devices with limited space, such as smartphones.

 * clean rules unpatches before running clean. This will break if you

   do that here, but I'm mentioning it just in case.


The src/arch directory seems to contain source files of various
licenses, that I believe are part of the created binaries. I therefore
do not think that we can redistribute the radare binary under
GPLv2. E.g.:

  - src/arch/dalvik seems to come from the android project, which is
Apache License 2.0. Please note that in debian/copyright.

  - src/arch/x86/udis86/* seem to be BSD licensed.

  - the files in src/arch/sparc seem to be GPL-3 licensed.

In general, run the tool `devscripts -r .` in the top level root
directory to get a brief license check. AFAIUI this is the tool
ftpmaster uses to examine NEW packages.

I fear debian/copyright needs to mention all this. Are there other
opinions on that from mentors?

Bug#525705: libsdl1.2debian-all: Detecting too many buttons for joystick

When I upgraded the libsdl1.2debian-all package from stable (1.2.13-2) to
testing (1.2.13-4+b1), the joystick detection appears to have been broken
(at least for my gamepad). It detects way too many buttons, and it randomly
changes how many buttons it detects. When I run the testjoystick program
from the original libsdl source tree, it demonstrates the problem. Because
the number of buttons is constantly changing, any program that depends on
SDL joystick input (such as Mednafen or ZSNES) will not be able to
consistantly use the joystick because the keycodes change upon each
execution.

Additionally, when rolling from one direction to another on the digital
pad (for example, rolling from pressing left to pressing down), the input
does not properly change from generating the keycode for left to the
keycode for down. This makes things like controlling a character in a
game not work smoothly, since you have to let go of the direction pad
completely to press a new direction. However, this could just be a side
effect caused by the incorrect button detection.

Here are the testjoystick results when running the stable branch

The Debian kernel doesn't have excessive backports, so that's mostly

KDE has started using parts of system-config-printer for printintg 
configuration. 

It wolud be nice to get the package split so that teh kde frontend doesn't 
have to pull in half of gnome.

They have done the split in ubuntu, that could be a source of inspiration

 I'm really sorry for this inconveniene.
 Maybe I should do that anyway, even if it doesn't help the testing 
 users, which already have upgraded g-v-m, as I don't know, when the new 
 nautilus enters testing.
 
 
 Still, with regard to 1.) the bug is fixed in g-v-m.

Yes you're right but:
- g-v-m 2.22 debian version isn't compatible with consolekit 0.3 so when you
downgrade g-v-m to 2.22 you must downgrade consolekit too,
- hal in testing requires consolekit 0.3,
- g-v-m 2.24 testing version need nautilus 2.24 which is not in testing.

= It's the souk in testing ! Currently I've frozen 9 packages to keep
testing usable... :(

I agree that this bug is annoying but I don't see it's a valid reason
for an update in stable (point releases for stable contain only
security relevant fixes and sometimes fixes for grave bugs).

In case you haven't seen it yet, I've created a backport of 5.1.2 for
lenny, it's avaliable at http://backports.org/
May I suggest that you use this version?

Bug#522157: updating lesstif2

Hi Sam,

When I talked to you on IRC several weeks ago you seemed glad that I 
made the debdiff to give some love to lesstif2. Unfortunately nothing I 
can see has happened since (am I missing something?)


I had some things to do myself in the meantime, but I intend to work a 
little bit on the upstream source tree as well, so I should be able to 
gain more lesstif knowledge in the upcoming time.


Could you let me know if you intend to fix several lesstif2 issues 
(maybe using the debdiff attached to bug 522157 [1])? I would appreciate 
it as I put quite some time into it and it would help me motivate for 
the upcoming issues. (I don't want to sound whining thou).

Bug#268631: force preference of IPv4 over IPv6

Please understand, I'm a big IPv6 advocate.  I use it on all my own
machines.  It is deployed on some local networks I use.  There is
extraordinarily strong IPv6 expertise here.  The guy who maintains our
network (David Malone) literally wrote the book on IPv6 network
administration.  The host ftp.ie.debian.org is centrally hosted at
heanet.ie, which is a centre for IPv6 deployment and expertise, a
sixxs tunnel broker, which extends direct IPv6 service to universities
here, etc.

 This kind of thing tends to work best when both sides know their
 stuff. Here they do.

They know their stuff here too.  Maybe someone in the middle is
messing things up.  Maybe something is temporarily or accidentally
configured in a suboptimal fashion, somewhere.  Maybe some router had
a hiccup and its IPv6 stuff went a little sour until someone notices
and tickles it.  Whatever.  The thing is, there is much less pressure
to keep the *global* IPv6 network tuned, and sometimes it takes a
while for problems to be recognized and repaired.  This is not due to
malice or deliberate neglect.  It is due to the fact that IPv4
problems cause immediate serious blowback, while IPv6 problems do not.
It is a chicken-and-egg problem, and ranting about how nice it would
be if everyone deployed IPv6 and gave it a lot of tender loving care
does not help.

 None of this is caused by IPv6, it's just sucky networking.

OBVIOUSLY!

But for the moment, IPv4 problems get recognized and repaired rapidly,
and IPv6 problems do not.  Why?  Chicken-and-egg.  No one relies on
IPv6 because it is unreliable.  Why is it unreliable?  Because no one
relies on it!

 ... Google is fully IPv6-enabled

Sort of.  I've used http://ipv6.google.com/.  But Google has IPv6
disabled at the DNS level for www.google.com, albeit perhaps only for
some requests.  Watch:

  $ curl --ipv4 --silent --show-error http://www.google.com | wc -c
  218
  $ curl --ipv6 --silent --show-error http://www.google.com | wc -c
  curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'www.google.com'

Why?  Because enabling it would break or degrade performance on many
IPv6-enabled clients, which would blithely prefer IPv6 and get
sporadic service.  If the clients defaulted to preferring IPv4, then
this wouldn't be a problem, and Google could put IPv6 addresses into
all DNS records, without risk.  That's what I'd like to see happen.
It won't until clients default to prefer IPv4.

So Google is your IPv6 poster child?  Watch!

 I think you have no solid technical arguments against IPv6.

I want to see IPv6 deployed.  I'm not making a technical argument
against IPv6.  What I'm arguing against is making it hard for people
to deploy IPv6 by setting up defaults that cause enabling IPv6 to
break things!

Problems and risks induced by prefer IPv6 are delaying full
deployment on both client networks and on servers.  What I'm arguing
against is default configurations that make it easy for enabling IPv6
to break things.  If we instead deliberately make it *hard* for
enabling IPv6 to break things, then people will actually enable IPv6.
Which is what I want!

 ... it's been *ages* since I've had to deal with a v6-induced issue.

You are lucky; that is quite unusual.

But wait: you get much degraded access to ftp.ie.debian.org over IPv6
than over IPv4.  So you *do* have an v6-induced issue: degraded
service to that particular host.

Bug#525718: nautilus 2.26.2-2 continuously launches/exits at login

After upgrading to nautilus 2.26.2-2, the next time I logged in I saw a
continuous series of nautilus icons showing up in the window list with
starting file manager or similar as the text.  Several calls to ps
uxf revealed nautilus continuously exiting and re-launching.

I don't know what caused nautilus to die.  It *looks* like gnome-session
does the re-launching of nautilus.  .xsession-errors had no messages
from nautilus and no repeated messages from anything.

I downgraded nautilus back to 2.24.2-2, and the problem went away.
After logging in with 2.24.2-2, I see no nautilus processes running.  (I
have /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop=false, so that makes
sense.)

Note that the dependencies listed below come after downgrading nautilus
back to 2.24.2-2.

You can't really say, that g-v-m *needs* nautilus 2.24.
It's just that with g-v-m 2.24 and nautilus 2.22 there is currently no
volume automounter for GNOME in testing. I agree, that is annoying.

I wouldn't go so far and call testing *unusable* because of that though.
