1. Why should GroupDAV require mcrypt? 2. Was that a new installation or an update? In the later case, it's normal behavior, that new applications get NOT installed. Now it's ancient history and things have been reliable for some time. I've been running dual stack hosts since 2000. It was sometimes unbearable in the first few years, but it's been *ages* since I've had to deal with a v6-induced issue. This bug should be fixed by upstream, so I want to inform them about it. However, I cannot say to upstream that there was a bug with a version of several years ago. I need to know if it applies to recent (last) release of ptlib, which is 2.6.1, currently in debian experimental. The problem seems to be rather in the ATI video driver than in the 2.6.26-2-686 kernel. When first upgrading from linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 to linux-image-2.6.26-2-686, I also upgraded the ATI driver for my Radeon X600 video card from ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64 to ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run, and suspend to ram stopped to work. Now, I am back with ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64, and suspend to ram works fine again. I also tested the new ATI driver with the previous kernel 2.6.26-1-686, and it fails as well. E.g. my default is EEUU, and I also have Pol. I have enabled the option so each window has its own layout. If I switch a window (say Firefox, or Emacs GTK) to Pol, and press one of the media keys, the layout reverts to EEUU. Pressing one of those keys while the layout is EEUU has no visible effect to the layout. The media keys still perform their expected function. QT and XLib programs such as Skype and xterm show the same behavior. I'm sending this report to the keyboard applet, because that's what shows me the layout change. Bug#525690: phpbb3: default permissions break database restore and avatars uploading
Package: phpbb3 Version: 3.0.2-4 Severity: normal database restore /var/lib/phpbb3/store is not readable by the webserver user (www-data) and therefore the restore functionality does not work. The above mentioned folder should be chmod 770 instead of 730. This bug was reported by jeremyrp, a user of TurnKey Linux phpBB, on our bug tracker: https://bugs.launchpad.net/turnkeylinux/+bug/364379 avatars uploading - /var/lib/phpbb3/avatars/{upload, gallery} is not writable by the webserver user (www-data) and therefore avatars cannot be uploaded. The above mentioned folders should be chowned www-data with permissions to read and write to the folders. Package: dblatex Version: 0.2.9-3 The dbk_fonts.sty file refers to a set of packages which, apparently, request for some PostScript fonts to be used for typesetting the document. However, these fonts may be unavailable for specific font encodings (such as T2A for cyrillic), thus resulting in numerous ``Font shape undefined'' warnings while running LaTeX. Consider, for example, two simplistic DocBook documents (one in English and one in Russian) attached. But mainly, exec login cannot possibly work in a PAM environment, but will fail/die and lose the user session; users should not be tricked into doing that. Presumably the user logged in with login (e.g. telnet, may not apply for ssh or xterm); then login done a fork before running the shell; any utmp entry refers to the PID of the parent login. I don't get your point. At least when login was setuid on debian, exec login used to work on PAM environments. Incidentally, seems rather wasteful to have login waiting to pam_close_session and telnetd waiting to clear utmp. What would you recommend? There are some UNIX where pam_close_session has to be done by the caller of login. But this requires a general policy to be applied consistently on many packages. I don't think this will be possible to enforce this on the tools used in Linux. So having login wait to pam_close_session is currently the only solution. Regarding UTMP, I don't know if it would be valid to close the entry on exit. Even if login did it, I'm also not sure telnetd wouldn't have to do it again anyway (there are other login implementation). Bug#525705: libsdl1.2debian-all: Detecting too many buttons for joystick
Package: libsdl1.2debian-all Version: 1.2.13-4+b1 Severity: normal When I upgraded the libsdl1.2debian-all package from stable (1.2.13-2) to testing (1.2.13-4+b1), the joystick detection appears to have been broken (at least for my gamepad). It detects way too many buttons, and it randomly changes how many buttons it detects. When I run the testjoystick program from the original libsdl source tree, it demonstrates the problem. Because the number of buttons is constantly changing, any program that depends on SDL joystick input (such as Mednafen or ZSNES) will not be able to consistantly use the joystick because the keycodes change upon each execution. Additionally, when rolling from one direction to another on the digital pad (for example, rolling from pressing left to pressing down), the input does not properly change from generating the keycode for left to the keycode for down. This makes things like controlling a character in a game not work smoothly, since you have to let go of the direction pad completely to press a new direction. However, this could just be a side effect caused by the incorrect button detection. Hi Sam, When I talked to you on IRC several weeks ago you seemed glad that I made the debdiff to give some love to lesstif2. Unfortunately nothing I can see has happened since (am I missing something?) I had some things to do myself in the meantime, but I intend to work a little bit on the upstream source tree as well, so I should be able to gain more lesstif knowledge in the upcoming time. Could you let me know if you intend to fix several lesstif2 issues (maybe using the debdiff attached to bug 522157 [1])? I would appreciate it as I put quite some time into it and it would help me motivate for the upcoming issues. (I don't want to sound whining thou). Bug#268631: force preference of IPv4 over IPv6
Please understand, I'm a big IPv6 advocate. I use it on all my own machines. It is deployed on some local networks I use. There is extraordinarily strong IPv6 expertise here. The guy who maintains our network (David Malone) literally wrote the book on IPv6 network administration. The host ftp.ie.debian.org is centrally hosted at heanet.ie, which is a centre for IPv6 deployment and expertise, a sixxs tunnel broker, which extends direct IPv6 service to universities here, etc. This kind of thing tends to work best when both sides know their stuff. Here they do. They know their stuff here too. Maybe someone in the middle is messing things up. Maybe something is temporarily or accidentally configured in a suboptimal fashion, somewhere. Maybe some router had a hiccup and its IPv6 stuff went a little sour until someone notices and tickles it. Whatever. The thing is, there is much less pressure to keep the *global* IPv6 network tuned, and sometimes it takes a while for problems to be recognized and repaired. This is not due to malice or deliberate neglect. It is due to the fact that IPv4 problems cause immediate serious blowback, while IPv6 problems do not. It is a chicken-and-egg problem, and ranting about how nice it would be if everyone deployed IPv6 and gave it a lot of tender loving care does not help. None of this is caused by IPv6, it's just sucky networking. OBVIOUSLY! But for the moment, IPv4 problems get recognized and repaired rapidly, and IPv6 problems do not. Why? Chicken-and-egg. No one relies on IPv6 because it is unreliable. Why is it unreliable? Because no one relies on it! ... Google is fully IPv6-enabled Sort of. I've used http://ipv6.google.com/. But Google has IPv6 disabled at the DNS level for www.google.com, albeit perhaps only for some requests. Because enabling it would break or degrade performance on many IPv6-enabled clients, which would blithely prefer IPv6 and get sporadic service. If the clients defaulted to preferring IPv4, then this wouldn't be a problem, and Google could put IPv6 addresses into all DNS records, without risk. That's what I'd like to see happen. It won't until clients default to prefer IPv4. So Google is your IPv6 poster child? Timeout: aborting command ``telnet'' with signal 9 Killed I think you have no solid technical arguments against IPv6. I want to see IPv6 deployed. I'm not making a technical argument against IPv6. What I'm arguing against is making it hard for people to deploy IPv6 by setting up defaults that cause enabling IPv6 to break things! Problems and risks induced by prefer IPv6 are delaying full deployment on both client networks and on servers. What I'm arguing against is default configurations that make it easy for enabling IPv6 to break things. If we instead deliberately make it *hard* for enabling IPv6 to break things, then people will actually enable IPv6. Which is what I want! ... it's been *ages* since I've had to deal with a v6-induced issue. You are lucky; that is quite unusual. But wait: you get much degraded access to ftp.ie.debian.org over IPv6 than over IPv4. Bug#525718: nautilus 2.26.2-2 continuously launches/exits at login
Package: nautilus Version: 2.26.2-2 Severity: important After upgrading to nautilus 2.26.2-2, the next time I logged in I saw a continuous series of nautilus icons showing up in the window list with starting file manager or similar as the text. Several calls to ps uxf revealed nautilus continuously exiting and re-launching. I don't know what caused nautilus to die. It *looks* like gnome-session does the re-launching of nautilus. .xsession-errors had no messages from nautilus and no repeated messages from anything. I downgraded nautilus back to 2.24.2-2, and the problem went away. After logging in with 2.24.2-2, I see no nautilus processes running. (I have /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop=false, so that makes sense.)
