Bug#550933: [gnome-panel] Panel jumps from bottom to top when switching between internal and external monitor

2009-10-13 Thread Jakob Lell

Package: gnome-panel
Version: 2.28.0-1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I am using a notebook which is sometimes attached to an external
monitor. When I switch from the external monitor to the internal
notebook display or vice versa, the panel on the bottom of the screen
jumps to the top automatically. I have to manually go to the preferences
of the panel and set the orientation from top to bottom again. This
occurs regardless of whether I use xrandr manually or use the gnome
display preferences applet.

There is a similar bug report in the ubuntu bug tracker since April 2009:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/355848

However, this bug has been marked invalid in May 2009. I am using debian
unstable and this behavior has changed quiet recently (not more than a
few weeks ago). I don't know whether this bug has the same cause as the
ubuntu bug.

FWIW, passwords should be here (check Edit > Personal Data > Passwords),
they "just" don't show up automatically, cf. bug #548405.

Ok,

I wrote next message to the list (with my other email address):
Hi list,

I'm writting here about debian #546886 bug [1]. Eugen told me about
writing in this list.

Today I opened ekiga with -d4 as parameter. Then I tried to call to
1999, then ekiga didn't let me to call (any dial in my phone)

I'm attaching ekiga output and gdb session from wiki[2].

Please tell me if you need more info.

See about this doesn't happen always. But I can assure, I can't use
ekiga all the morning without the issue described in #546886

Thank you very much

I have an issue with your path on IE8 (not tested on earlier version).

The following lines in ajaxterm.js lead to an error "Object required":

de=r.responseXML.documentElement;
if (de.tagName == "pre") {

The corresponding part of the ajaxterm.py is:
span+=u'\n'
r='%s'%r

It needs to be UTF-8 and not utf8 I think
Does it have other consequences?

Cheers,
Julien

Yes, it seems to work. Do you know if it'll be fixed at one point
(wether by free or by ekiga)?

This is not same upstream, umeplus font consists of Umefont (ttf-umefont)
and IPAfont (otf-ipafont). Do you mean ttf-umefont lacks some glyphs that
is included in mplus font? If so, which glyph?

And, VLGothic (ttf-vlgothic) is based on mplus font. Maybe it would meet
 your purpose.

You'll see in debian-i18n that I had to change again the translation
of one string, the DefaultChoice one.

In your case, it has to be "translated" to "other" as Finland is not
in the supported country list.

This is fixed in the attached file. So you don't really have anything
to do, this is just FYI.

PS: you probably got a call for translations in the meantime,
Esko. Please ignore it.

Hi again,

I’m afraid I’m not getting very far with my attempts to use

Do you know what could cause these errors?

Bug#549610: [5190a20] Fix for Bug#549610 committed to git

2009-10-13 Thread Manoj Srivastava

thanks
Hi,

The following change has been committed for this bug by
 Manoj Srivastava on Wed, 14 Oct 2009 00:43:27 -0500.
The fix will be in the next upload.
=
[topic--debian]: Move the shared library to /usr/lib

libsemanage1 links to libustr which is located under the, possible
separate or external, /usr partition, which would render libsemanage
unusable in such setups. (This dependency has been around since 2.0.9).

This patch moves the library to /usr

Bug#550928: paperkey: output file created with wide perms

2009-10-13 Thread Ian Zimmerman
Package: paperkey
Version: 1.1-1
Severity: normal

When paperkey is given the -o flag and the output file doesn't already
exist, it is created with normal permissions - (644). This is clearly
bad. It would be OK to just mention in the manpage so I can either
pre-create the file or set my umask before running paperkey, but it
does need to be pointed out.

Bug#550316: Prevents CD from ejecting

Package: devicekit-disks

I am also experiencing this with a DVD drive, Debian Sid updated as of today.

The drive is /dev/hda.

I also notice that if I shut down Gnome and X, devicekit-disks persists, i.e.,
it isn't killed. I don't know whether that's a problem in itself, but combined
with this bug it took a while to work out what was going on (plus some mailing
list discussion), as I mostly work from the console, running Gnome only
occasionally.

Bug#550924: lintian: direct-changes-in-diff-but-no-patch-system indirectly suggests to create files by patch.

2009-10-13 Thread Charles Plessy
Package: lintian
Version: 2.2.17
Severity: normal

Hello Lintian maintainers,

I just got the direct-changes-in-diff-but-no-patch-system pedantic
warning in the (non-free) clustalw package, that contains extra files
for the user's service: the upstream changelog and some test data.

Originally they were placed at the root of the upstream sources, and
in reaction to the Lintian message, I moved them to the debian
directory. After reading the related #471263 bug, I think that it is
the best compromise.

The reason why I opened this bug is that what I did is not what is
suggested by the Lintian message, which would rather induce people to
ship extra files as a patch. To avoid people using this unnecessarly
complicated way, I would like to suggest the following addition to the
explanations of the Lintian tag:

“In case your diff.gz is used to create new files, please consider
moving them inside the debian directory if possible.”

Have a nice day,

Bug#550825: Resolved: Unable to upgrade perl

2009-10-13 Thread Mader, Alexander (N-MSR)

Hello,

the culprit was:

   safe-rm

which is an perl script itself and apparently prevented perl paths from
deletion. After replacing it by the original rm (/bin/rm not
/usr/bin/rm) the upgrade succeeded.

I beg your pardon for the fast cry in the first place :-)

Hi,

The following change has been committed for this bug by

[libselinux]: cross-build fixes

- Pass ARCH=$(DEB_HOST_ARCH) to src/Makefile so that TLSFLAGS isn't set
on cross-builds on an i386 build machine.
- Pass CC, CFLAGS, and LDFLAGS when building Python bindings.
- Use pkg-config to find libsepol.a, and pass the location to
  src/Makefile in the LIBSEPOLDIR variable.

Hi Dominique,

I agree. I also understand the concerns of Andreas that open bug can attract
goodwill that is better to be focused eleswhere, so if you think it helps, the
severity of the bug can be lowered to even whishlist.

Lastly (and this is the main motivation for this message), I would like to
advertise one recent new function of the Debian bug tracking system, summaries.
You can find some explanation in the following announcement:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2009/08/msg3.html

If the bug is likely to stay open for a while, that is a probably a nice
feature to play with.

Bug#548500: Help with slicer FTBFS on alpha - #548500

2009-10-13 Thread Dominique Belhachemi
I thought about it to exclude alpha. But this is not necessary anymore
because alpha isn't relevant for Squeeze.

On the other hand, changing the source code doesn't really work because
the AffineRegistration class is highly templatized. The .got subsegment
limit will probably be always exceeded.

Anyway, I will keep this bug open for now because it doesn't harm. Maybe
the alpha guys will remove this .got subsegment limit in the near
future.

Bug#550920: [epiphany-browser] Web-page specified fonts are being ignored

2009-10-13 Thread Thomas Bushnell BSG
Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 2.28.0-4
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

After upgrading to the new epiphany-browser, the web-page-specified font
of "sans serif" for (for example) Wikipedia is being ignored. It used
to display in sans serif, which is what Wikipedia requests, and I have
the "allow web pages to override" option selected. But yet it shows up
in my system application font instead of the sans-serif font requested.

Bug#550918: finch: dependencies pull in almost a complete X server

2009-10-13 Thread Dmitri Gribenko
Package: finch
Version: 2.6.2-1
Severity: wishlist

finch depends on libgstfarsight0.10-0, which depends on
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, which depends on gconf2, libx11-6, libxdamage1 etc.
Personally I don't mind having an X installation on a headless ssh-only machine
(hard disk space is cheap). But the dependencies IMHO contradict the point
that finch is a console IM client.

We should add this to firmware-nonfree - probably in its own package,
since it's >1MB in size.

Bug#549879: debootstrap: --variant=minbase is broken for squeeze

2009-10-13 Thread Kim-man 'Punky' TSE

Hi,
It looks like gnupg and util-linux depend on dpkg (>= 1.15.4) which
has not make its way to squeeze yet.

Cheers
-- Héctor Orón

Yes, you are right. If I included install-info so that it will
workaround dpkg (>-1.15.4) dependency.

So the workaround is:
debootstrap --include=install-info --verbose --variant=minbase squeeze
./squeeze-chroot http://ftp.tw.debian.org/debian

and it works w/o error.

BTW, why gnupg and utl-linux depends on the latest dpkg? And why dpkg
1.15.4 didn't get into testing?

No more modules will be added to linux-modules-extra-2.6 - instead, it
is going to be removed. The most serious problem with this package is
bug #517130. You can make your module-source packages build modules
automatically by integrating them with dkms.

Bug#550910: filetraq: add support for tracking entire directories

Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

I came across a modified filetraq that adds support for tracking entire
directories. That seems like a very useful feature, so it would be nice
if Debian's filetraq could be modified to do the same thing.

The modified version can be located at:

I can attach an actual patch if that would be useful...

Bug#550908: cmake: Source files properties don't propagate across subdirectories

2009-10-13 Thread James Webber
Package: cmake
Version: 2.6.4-3
Severity: important

The recent cmake update appears to have broken source file properties. Here is
how to reproduce it minimally:

### begin ###
# rm -rf bindir srcdir
mkdir -p srcdir/subdir
mkdir bindir
cat < srcdir/CMakeLists.txt
cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 2.6)
project(dummy)

set(file "\${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}/output.cpp")

set_source_files_properties("\${file}" PROPERTIES SOME_USER_DEFINED_PROP blah)

get_source_file_property(val \${file} SOME_USER_DEFINED_PROP)

# Will print "blah", as expected
message(STATUS "\${val}")

add_subdirectory("subdir")
EOF

cat < srcdir/subdir/CMakeLists.txt
get_source_file_property(val \${file} SOME_USER_DEFINED_PROP)
# Will print "NOTFOUND" instead of "blah", indicating the property was never
# defined.
message(STATUS "\${val}")
EOF

cd bindir
cmake ../srcdir
### end ###

Other forms of properties (eg target properties) are inherited as expected.

The bug is still present when:

- using different property setting functions like set_property().
- having the source file as an OUTPUT of an add_custom_command().
- calling define_property() before setting the property.
- locating the file in the srcdir instead of bindir.
- using a non-user defined property like GENERATED.

I did not test properties defined by cmake other than GENERATED (set by
add_custom_command()) because I'm not sure exactly when they are defined by the
system. I did test that add_custom_command() correctly sets the property in the
local scope; it just isn't inherited.

Apart from the obvious compatibility issues, this is a particularly problematic
bug because cmake will fail to configure if it cannot find a file existing in
the file system unless the file has the property GENERATED defined to a true
value. This property is automatically set by add_custom_command() which means
you can generate some file and then add_executable() with it.

Since only a subset of people will be affected by this bug I have not marked it
grave, but it does mean that anyone who meta-generates anything (eg. unit tests,
flex, bison, etc) can't use this version of cmake without hacks. Consequently
it might cause Debian package builds to fail in odd ways.

The workaround is to be aware in advance of what sources will be generated and
set the property to true in the directory where you add_executable().

Oops, sorry, here is a fixed patch.

Samuel
Description: policykit-1 currently FTBFS on hurd-i386 because of unconditional
use of
PATH_MAX, which hurd-i386 doesn't define since it doesn't have such
arbitrary limitation. The attached patch fixes it by just using
 glibc's get_current_dir_name() extension when available.

This sounds more like a Xorg problem.
Are you using the new dependency based boot system?
Does X come up before hal/dbus is ready?

dbus taking 100% cpu could also mean an application is shoving a lot of data
over dbus, could you check that with dbus-monitor?

All in all, it seems something in your system seems to be seriouly messed
up/misconfigured.

Bug#550907: dbus: fails to start at boot and doesn't works very well after it's, started manually

2009-10-13 Thread Fred

Package: dbus
Version: 1.2.16-2
Severity: important

Hello,

Since last update, dbus fails to start at boot (hal problem ?).

At a boot :
When X server and GDM started, I loose keyboard (ctrl+alt+Fx function
doesn't works, only "magic keys" are ok), mouse and network with
networkmanager doesn't work (I must use "/etc/network/interfaces method"
to have an active iface ok at boot).

After restart it, keyboard, mouse and networkmanager works perfectly, I
can logging my gnome session.

On my session, the function "ajusting brightness" on the laptop is often
corrupted. The luminosity of the laptop's screen varies between 80% and
100% in the form of regular blinking (I do _nothing_, just starting a
session). The second problem is dbus eats all of the CPU.

These problems can be partially resolved with restarting dbus. But,
Nautilus crashes, the brightness applet can't connect to dbus/hal and
suspend to ram doesn't work after.

If I launch a video from VLC (from example), the OSD for the brightness
applet appears as I use the applet.

I'm not sure, but I think theses bug reports are about the ame problem :

Dear Yan,

thank you very much. I will correct the manpages at the next upload. For
clustalw it can be done shortly, and for clustalx the package has to be redone
from scratch to accomodate with the switch from Vibrant to Qt.

Bonne journée,

Bug#550906: guessnet: Guessnet sees WPA2 network as open when wpa_supplicant is authenticated to the network

2009-10-13 Thread Wesley Schwengle
Package: guessnet

Severity: important

Situation:
Mapping via guessnet in /etc/network/interfaces, network choosen should be

The problem is now also present on Debian testing/unstable. The difference with
Ubuntu is that a restart of all the network services the problem is not
resolved.

I don't have the patches extracted here, sorry (I tried to get them

Bug#550902: bug installing debian 5.03 - perhaps related to grub

2009-10-13 Thread jeffunit

Package: grub or debian installation
Version: unknown

I installed debian 5.03 on my computer, using the dvd image.
The install seemed to go fine.
When I rebooted, I got a grub message about with an error like
'error 15'. I did not get to the grub boot menu.

The machine is a fileserver with 6 ide disks running mdadm.
There is a 7th ide disk where I installed the os (dual booting with windows).
The motherboard is an asus cur-dls, with 2 pentium III 933 processors, 1.1gb
of ram, and two promise tx-100x2 cards, with the ide drives attached to them.
The dvd drive is attached to the ide controller on the motherboard.

When the install got to the grub installation, it detected windows
xp, and asked if

there were any other os's (which there were not).

After the system failed to boot, I reinstalled 5.03, using the expert
install option.

There were no additional grub configuration options.
The os install seemed to mess up the partition table on my mdadm array.
After installing mandriva 2009.1, I had to reformat the partition.

I suspect the problem is the os disk is not the first disk detected
by the bios.

Previous to installing 5.03, I was running mandriva 2007. After being unable
to install debian, I successfully installed mandriva 2009.1, which
also used grub.
The grub configuration was successful at booting mandriva as well as
windows xp.

The bios was set to boot the os disk first.

I can't provide the exact error message, as I was unable to boot the machine.
I can't provide a transcript for the same reason.
I suspect that your grub configuration had the wrong disk configured in it.
I don't know the exact version of grub, or the kernel, as I couldn't
boot the os.

Bug#550901: get_current_dir_name implicitly converted to pointer

2009-10-13 Thread dann frazier
Package: policykit-1
Version: 0.94-3
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

Function `get_current_dir_name' implicitly converted to pointer at
frobnicate.c:45

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

Bug#549279: Warning from setlocale

2009-10-13 Thread Cesare Leonardi
Package: initscripts
Version: 2.87dsf-6
Severity: normal

During the boot i see a warning message that i think is related to this
bug report.

The message is:
/etc/default/locale: line 31: warning: setlocale: LC_MESSAGES: cannot change
locale (en_US.UTF-8): No such file or directory

I've checked that this message come from the following piece of code inside
"/etc/init.d/mountall.sh":

# for ntfs-3g to get correct file name encoding
if [ -r /etc/default/locale ]; then
. /etc/default/locale
export LANG
fi

But, as Piotr said, that code runs before the remining filesystems are
mounted and, indeed, on my box /home, /usr and /var are on separate
filesystems. To be more precise:
/ is ext3
/home /usr /var are ext3 inside LVM

My /etc/default/locale is (comments and blank lines dropped):
LANG=it_IT.UTF-8
# LANGUAGE=
# LC_ALL=
# LC_ADDRESS=
# LC_CTYPE=
# LC_COLLATE=
# LC_IDENTIFICATION=
# LC_MEASUREMENT=
LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8
# LC_MONETARY=
# LC_NAME=
# LC_NUMERIC=
# LC_PAPER=
# LC_TELEPHONE=
# LC_TIME=

I've setup two locales using "dpkg-reconfigure -plow locales":
en_US.UTF-8
it_IT.UTF-8 (default)

Regards.

Cesare.

Hi Samuel,

I applied your patch in 0.94-3 but this seems to cause build failures on ia64
[1]. Would you mind looking at that? Otherwise I will have to revert the patch.

Cheers,
Michael

Note that the criticality of this bug is related to the fact the normal
http version leaks the passwords to the build logs, and this patch is a
solution for that. If it can be fixed another way, this bug can be
downgraded back to wishlist.

Disable `usescancodes' in config file and the keys will work.

$ cat ~/.dosboxrc

usescancodes=false
-END WORKAROUND-

Dosbox receives correct SDL_keysym's[1] now and there is no need to
remap[2] them.

  [1] /usr/include/SDL/SDL_keyboard.h
  [2] dosbox-0.72/src/gui/sdl_mapper.cpp (MapSDLCode, GetKeyCode)

Perhaps dosbox started getting proper keysyms because of recent xorg
upgrade, but this is only my speculation...

Have fun!

lm-sensors is Linux specific, so there is no need to support non-Linux
ports. The created node (/dev/i2c-0) is actually not really useful
anymore for lm-sensors users, the right solution is now to add it to
i2c-tools.

Right, I'll do an upload to fix the problem on the libsensors4 side.

 complete. The virtual device is
read-only. The starting block number and
the ending block number have been stored
 in the BIOPL.

In other words, this is a normal condition, not an error. It is
simply a warning that this minidisk is read-only. The correct
response by the program should be to treat a return code of 4
the same as a return code of 0, provided that the device really
is read-only. A return code of 4 for a device that is supposedly
read-write is a sanity-check error that you might want to check
for. Otherwise, a return code of 4 is a normal and expected
condition.

I don't claim to be a C programmer, but it appears to me that
the mdsk_init_io internal subroutine of /drivers/s390/block/dasd_diag.c
is the culprit.

That's not true, as the dependency had an alternative ‘makedev | udev’,
here the proper fix was to switch them to ‘udev | makedev’ as MAKEDEV
is being used in the postinst. Also removing makedev makes it
impossible to use bluez w/o udev which some might desire.

So please revert this and switch the order instead.

Bug#550892: libpam-mount: mounts/unmounts defined mounts when first mounted

2009-10-13 Thread Simon Raven
Package: libpam-mount
Version: 1.32-1
Severity: important

hi,

Once one of the defined mounts is mounted, it continually unmounts it,
and mounts it again, in a cycle like that, all the time - literally. Day
or night, whether it's busy or not, it'll unmount it, then re-mount it a
bit later. This has been going on since the last upgrade to the
package.

It's annoying to have it unmount something when you're working on a
file, go to save it, then the program you're using tells you it isn't
there anymore.

(a random bit of venting there, wasn't directed at you the maintainer,
nothing personal at all, ok ? :))

thanks,
simon

Would it be possible to reduce the dependencies? If the gstreamer stuff is
required by some plugin, for example, could it be packaged separately?

Bug#550890: amarok: Does not save last.fm account data after refusing plaintext storage

2009-10-13 Thread Stephan Windmüller
Package: amarok
Version: 2.2.0-1
Severity: normal

When I upgraded to the current version of amarok in squeeze, the dialog for
regitering a KDE wallet pops up at the first start. I did not want to configure
the wallet at that moment and chose to continue without it.

Then amarok asked me if I want to store the account data in clear text. No, that
was not what I wanted, so I hit the "Cancel" button, hoping to be asked the
above questions next time.

But when I started amarok again, there was no dialog for creating a wallet. When
I entered the account data for last.fm, they disappear even when I do not quit
amarok.

So, what does exactly happen when I chose to not save the account data in
plaintext format? And where is the option to configure this later on?

Makes a lot of sense to me. Although I didn't want to bring in another
language into the mix it's probably time to make an exception.

gbp-pq (corresponding to dom-{apply,safe}-patches) was already there
(shipped with 0.4.55). I've written gbp-clone using the gbp helpers to
mimic dom-git-checkout (shipepd with 0.4.57) and gbp-pull is almost
redone using the available gbp code too, hope to find some time to look
at gbp at all during the week.

Dom-new-git-repo needs to be generalized the pkg-ocaml is hardcoded in
there, help on this would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Bug#518473: Support for netrc

2009-10-13 Thread David Kalnischkies
While it is now commited and this message will maybe redirected to /dev/null
i just want to express that i am unhappy with this patch:
First of all: It has no documentation - this is unfortunately also true for
many other apt features, so this is maybe not a real no-go,
but also the manpage for the netrc file doesn't even suggest the usage of
this file for https -- for me it looks like it should be used only for
"user configuration for ftp" (man 5 netrc).
So if this file is really used for https in realworld someone should patch
the manpage - otherwise this new "feature" seems more like an ugly hack...
(and the last think we need is yet another hack in apt i guess)

On the other hand, apt already includes a way for client authentication
(i think) since 0.7.15~exp1 using certificates.
See the very short man 5 apt.conf description and the (in my eyes) more
useful descriptions in the beloved config-example:
/usr/share/doc/apt/examples/apt-https-method-example.conf.gz
Options: Acquire::https[::repo.domain.tld]::{CaInfo,SslCert,SslKey}
(This is btw one of the under-documented features -
feel free to provide patches for this one as well)

So i am also not really sure if this feature is needed at all --
or only for the very limited usecases the submitter described original...

Best regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

David "DonKult" Kalnischkies

Well, then "Cancel" button would not hurt obviously.

But following such a logic all Xorg crash bugs would be critical. That's not
the case.

It changes KDE desktop or KDE application settings. That particular setting is
of KDE desktop, it does not affect KDE applications (contrary to e.g. default
browser).

Since you are not running KDE session manager, it cannot start window manager
for you. That setting would start Openbox under KDE session though.

But it used to work like it was set before (i.e. KWin), didn't it? So golden
rule - don't fix what ain't broken :D

Since KDE has a session manager, it can replace current window manager without
terminating X session. So why wouldn't it? It's a feature and it is safe under
KDE. However, I agree that it should not do that under non-KDE session since
it might not be safe.

in an ideal world every security issue would come with a complete
prescription and regiment to make it all better. however, we do not
live in such a place. the best we can do is track the issue at hand,
follow work being done elsewhere, and potentially spend our own
precious time testing and writing fixes. obviously this is a lot of
work, but it is the price we pay since there are nefarious peoples
about.

i would recommend working with the security team to request cve's on
oss-sec for specific issues once they are well-defined, and address each
of them in turn; while keeping this bug open to track the meta-issue
(potentially downgrading to important as to not impede transitions).

note that any of these crashers that show signs of memory corruption
are very much cause for concern (see recent pdf jbig2 decoder issues).
the others can probably be safely discarded. by "may enable remote
compromise," i mean via user-assisted (social engineered) attack
vectors (i.e. downloading and viewing a malicious video file). this
is a very legitimate concern since most users are very trusting of
untrustworthy data.

Bug#549910: debian-policy: Specify requirement in terms of upgradeability, interface stability

Documenting this seems like a good idea to me as well, although I'm not so
sure about the transitional package bit. Isn't that to some extent
dependent on what sort of a transition it is and the details of just how
the change is being done, including how backward-compatible the new
version is?

I do really like the idea of documenting that we support upgrades from
the previous stable, but not more than that, in Policy. That feels like
solid Policy material to me, and I don't think we say that explicitly at
the moment.

This feels very fuzzy to me. I wonder if it would do better in devref for
a while and then we can see if a Policy-level core emerges that could be
lifted into Policy.
