Bug#543362: Debian bug 543362: WM_TRANSIENT_FOR X Property Set To Self In Violation of ICCCM

I agree that x11-ssh-askpass works best as a transient dialog.

> In my opinion, a somewhat loose interpretation of the function of

I think the ICCM is clear and we can't loosely interpret this section,
but we can purposely violate it with the excuse that the ICCM working
committee failed to imagine dialogs without parents. And, should the
ICCM ever be revised again, we can certainly bring this situation to
the working committee's attention.

Philip: I think this bug should remain open in case anyone else has a
similar problem, but feel free to mark this bug wontfix and downgrade
its severity to wishlist.

Thanks,

Bug#545140: Newer passwordsafe client

2009-11-21 Thread Roderik Muit
FYI: there's a new client which is able to open Passwordsafe files, and
is being actively worked on. The best solution would probably be to have
that packaged for Debian.

It's called Loxodo - homepage is at http://www.christoph-sommer.de/loxodo/

It's Python+wxWidgets - and also has a commandline mode (for reading
entries, I don't think that's for writing yet. But the downloadable .zip
has a different commandline syntax than the latest version on Github,
it's changed in the past 2 weeks, so there's definite movement there.)

The only thing I don't really like is the 'list view' in the graphical
client. I like the 'tree view' that password-gorilla has, for editing.
But at least it shows he list in order of group...

Bug#557296: debootstrap: Use dpkg-deb instead of ar when available

Yes, that's why I explicitly pointed that out in the bug report. And I
can understand the reservations.

But then debootstrap has not supported all valid .debs for some time
now, so if ar would be only used outside Debian, it would have been
on the same situation as currently (prior to the extra compression
patch being applied).

And debootstrap already works differently depending on the environment,
say when retrieving the architecture using udpkg, dpkg or a text file.
Or in the pkgdetails case. Just two examples I've seen. Which is not
justification enough to introduce more divergence, of course!

> > That was my initial reaction as well. One thing that could count against

Right. Additionally an option could be added to explicitly choose the
extractor, to ease testing.

> > I should IMO be agreed that debootstrap should never rely on features not
> > commonly available using basic *nix tools.

Sure, and one of the features of the deb format is that it can be
handled that way if desired. But that it can be handled that way does
not mean we should not use the best tool for the job if available, and
falling back to the basic Unix tools variant otherwise.

> Supporting dpkg-deb in this case will only add code complexity
> maintainence issues.

Well, the refactoring patch IMO can be applied regardless of this bug
being rejected.

And I could understand this complaint if we'd be talking about
thousands of lines of code, but the code using dpkg-deb instead of ar
is pretty small (29 lines changed in the functions file including the
chooser logic), with the dpkg-deb variant being the simpler one. :)

> I can foresee we asking: This debootstrap failure were with it running
> inside of Debian or d-i?

The extractor choosed could be output to avoid that kind of situation.
I can amend the patch adding that if desired.

thanks,
guillem

Is it really the whole problem? What other package(s) I should
--exclude= as well considering the case above?

OS> I'm changing the title of the bug to improve this part of the

Please note that:

* the ``Found additional base dependencies:'' line doesn't
report any of the `--exclude='d packages among those brought
  by the dependencies;

* chroot(8)ing into the system and `apt-get remove'ing the very
  same set of packages:

# apt-get remove initscripts sysv{-rc,init{,-utils}} login mount

doesn't remove any package out of this set; (though it
  complains on essentiality, of course.)

TIA.

Bug#557439: modules in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules cannot load firmware

2009-11-21 Thread Paul TBBle Hampson
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.93.4
Severity: normal

Modules added to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules are loaded by load_modules call
in init. However, udevd is not started until "run_scripts
/scripts/init-premount"
further down.

This means that any module which requests firmware (in this case, the
kms-enabled
radeon.ko driver) will simply stop waiting for the firmware request to be
fufilled,
leaving the boot process effectively hung.

In my case, I simply added a hook script to include the radeon driver, and a
zz_radeon script in premount to modprobe radeon right after udev was started.
So not
much more effort, but certianly more than I expected.

I imagine this would be more of a problem for users whose root disks are on a
controller
which needs firmware to run, but haven't really tested that.

I'm unsure if the solution would be to start udev earlier, provide some kind of
stub
firmware loader (if that's even possible without eating all the other udev
events) or
if there's some other solution.

Looking at HelpOnMacros I notice that it is still using the [[Macro]] syntax,

I
did install a new underlay when I upgraded, which should have picked up new

Hi,

First of all, please switch to English before you do generate, as
otherwise your message are displayed in Russian, and I can't read what
you have paste here.

Second, version 0.31.0-1 is the Git version, not the one that we
uploaded to Debian. So maybe it would be best to report here:

http://bts.gplhost.com/mantis/

rather than in Debian.

Last, it seems that you replied yes to the "use cyrus system" question
when you did the setup of DTC. But are you really using Cyrus? Do you
have dtc-cyrus installed so that it would have pulled the dependencies
(it's only a virtual package...)? I think DTC shouldn't even have tried
generating the .mailfilter file at all if you are using Cyrus.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to send this bug report, this is aways
very appreciated here. I'll do my best so this is solved if there's
really an issue.

Thomas

Bug#531296: irssi-plugin-xmpp: Segfaults when attempting to connect to XMPP server

2009-11-21 Thread Jason White
The segfault must have been due to something I inadvertently introduced into
my configuration while trying to set up irssi-plugin-xmpp.

After cleaning up my configuration and running /xmppconnect, I was able to
establish a successful connection and all is working.

I know I should have saved the old configuration file, since a segfault isn't
desirable even with invalid configuration settings.

The invokation is just wrong, as there's no /usr/bin/mpg123-alsa
alternative. In any case u-a should not fail like this, so I've fixed
this and it will be included in 1.15.5.3, which we'll probably upload

There is an option to logout anyway. If I choose that, it logs out

This behavior seems to only occur after the first time I log in.
The first time after a reboot, everything happens as expected -- desktop
icons appear and logout goes without a hitch.

This is a test machine, so I can load experimental software on it if necessary.

Well, no need for experimental. Does it still happen if you upgrade

Bug#557434: libsnmp-base: Asks (with high priority) to download non-free bits on installation

2009-11-21 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: libsnmp-base
Version: 5.4.2.1~dfsg-3
Severity: important

On installation, libsnmp-base prompts about whether to download and
install non-free MIB files, with high priority. This has a number of
problems:

- As stated several times in the discussion leading to this change,
libsnmp-base doesn't necessarily need these MIBs to function; only the
command-line tools, and *possibly* other software using libsnmp-base
that wants names rather than numbers, do. That would tend to lead to
a "Suggests" at most from libsnmp-base. Prompting for installation
proves quite intrusive by comparison, for something most users don't
  need.

- It adds another prompt to installation which users have to answer,
many of which won't necessarily have a clue about SNMP. A quick look
at the reverse-Depends of libsnmp15 (which pulls in libsnmp-base)
turns up hplip, openipmi, ifstat, and kolab-cyrus-common, any of which
a user might install without any knowledge of SNMP.

- It bypasses the packaging system by downloading and installing bits
that don't get managed by the package manager. (This will prove even
more painful if the data needs updating at any point.) Furthermore,
it installs these bits to /usr.

- It bypasses the dependency mechanisms of the packaging system.
Software depending on libsnmp-base and needing the MIB files would
fail if the user says "no", but nothing in the dependencies can
express this. Furthermore, this also does an end-run around the
requirement that software in main may not depend on non-free software,
by simply omitting the dependency and letting things break.

- It prompts the user to install non-free software. Previously, Debian
has avoided and removed such prompts, notably the one in the initial
installation asking whether to use contrib and non-free.

I propose two alternative solutions, which I think would address all of
these issues:

1) If the licenses of the MIB files permit (which as far as I can tell
they do), package the MIB files in Debian non-free. Have
libsnmp-base suggest this new package; packages in main may suggest
packages in contrib or non-free, they just can't depend on or
recommend packages in contrib or non-free. Other packages, like smi,
can also suggest this package. Any package which actually requires
the MIB files can depend on them (and move to contrib), if we can't
fix it to avoid that requirement; packages which work fine without
the MIB files but which could make use of them if present could
suggest the package containing the MIBs.

2) If the licenses of the MIB files do not permit redistribution,
create a package in contrib which unconditionally downloads and
installs them, and treat that package as described in 1 above
   (Suggests from libsnmp-base, in particular).

Really tempted to file this bug as "serious", but AFAICT it doesn't
violate the *letter* of Debian Policy. I personally think we ought to
change Policy to explicitly prohibit a package in main from offering to
download non-free data at install time, though. Note that any package
in main which depends (directly or indirectly) on libsnmp-base and needs
the MIBs *does* violate Debian Policy.

Bug#522078: rt2860-source: 2.6.31-0.slh.3-sidux either

2009-11-21 Thread Andreas Marschke
Package: rt2860-source
Version: 1.8.0.0-3
Severity: normal

I've been experiencing some problems with this particular package my self.
Not only that parts of the debian rules file are a bit unwell written and
throw warnings when a tab is on the line but no content.
Despite these small issues the package refuses to build due to the fact that
rules lacks basic things such as the clean and build target which are in place
but called binary-modules: instead of build.
After correcting the minor target issues and getting over with the dodgy rules
file the next thing is the actual compiling.
This will show this output:
 cp -f os/linux/Makefile.6 /usr/src/modules/rt2860/os/linux/Makefile
 make -C /lib/modules/2.6.31-0.slh.3-sidux-686/build

 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/modules/rt2860'
 make: *** [binary-modules] Error 2

I might lack some packages if thats the case i would be nice to know which are
not there.
For the other issues regarding packaging quality I could provide a patch if
interested.

Cheers,

Andreas Marschke.

The fail is somewhat puzzling because the problem is supposed fixed
in the 4.4 branch.

Try adding --disable-libstdcxx-pch as mentioned earlier in this thread.
This is PR 39355: http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=39355

Good luck in debugging this bug! I was not able to determine the
actual cause. It appears GCC's internal data are somewhat corrupt
when the pch header files are generated. This causes various tests
to ICE when compiled with the pch headers.

The problem appears to have gone away with head. I don't see it with
hpux.

Such a package would be of little use since by default, these utilities
are not POSIX-compliant. For example, patch is not POSIX-compliant by
default and most patch systems rely on this non-POSIX behavior. Debian
does not have a POSIX-compliant vi, since none of the implementations
have open mode.

Well, my sense of aesthetics are violated when a logging channel and a
control channel are slammed on top of each other. Arguably wpa_gui
should have used a separate way of communicating with wpa_supplicant
other than specially formatted message in-band in the logging channel.
It just seems like a gross kludge to me, and wpa_msg_ctrl() is piling
a kludge on top of a kludge. It'll work for now, but it's not what I
would call a clean design. But whatever; different developers will
have different standards of architectural cleanliness than others

Cools, thanks. What was the Ubuntu Launchpad bug # that you mentioned
where this came up? It would be nice to mention this to the Ubuntu
folks to see if they would be interested in picking this up as a
bugfix for Karmic. The syslog spam really was painfully annoying, and
chewed up a lot of SSD write endurance that I really would have rather
not have burned up.

A quick read of doc/install.html tells me we need it on install.

It is the local admin's problem to run it when he creates new partitions (or
run mkimap and make sure the permissions are good for Debian cyrus), so we
can simply skip runing it on upgrades if we check and the dpkg-statoverride
information matches the filesystem.

Actually, I think we might not be doing the best possible thing with the
permissions and owners, either: the cyrus spool is completely private, it
should not be accessible by group "mail" at all, except for the local lmtp
UNIX socket in /var/run/cyrus/socket/, and that is under dpkg-statoverride
control, anyway.

Since we've been using cyrus:mail for about a decade, changing that requires
some care, but this is likely the best time to do it.

Its a problem, and it requires help from upstream to solve it in a way that

Yep. I added a patch to the D-Bus service activation file to turn on
logging via the syslog stuff backported from upstream in another patch
(backported from upstream) so that people debugging wpa_supplicant issues,
when using some D-Bus aware application, have an easier life. It was a bad
side effect that some messages are sent very frequently and are logged. This
side effect has been reported and upstream has reacted [1] by adding a
function which should be used for frequent events that avoids logging
anything unless in debug mode.

If __signbitl is the only failure in the abi_check, then that's easy

With cloog/ppl disabled I still get 7 testsuite failures, so I'll have

Bug#557431: general: there is no package to install all POSIX utilities at once

2009-11-21 Thread Dmitri Vorobiev
Package: general
Severity: wishlist

Currently no package exists that would allow installation of all
utilities specified by the POSIX `Shell and utilities' volume:

http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/idx/utilities.html

It is considered useful to have such a package, and one such
package was actually created:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~codedot/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/870564/+listing-archive-extra

This bug is to suggest inclusion of this or a similar package
into Debian operating system.

Bug#557429: dwm: create yet another alternative for Winkey

2009-11-21 Thread Dmitri Vorobiev
Package: dwm
Version: 5.7.2-1

It was proven convenient to use dwm with WinKey to issue commands
to the window manager. This wishlist bug requests creating a new
alternative for a dwm compilation that uses the Windows key as
the dwm's modifier.

More information about WinKey as dwm's modifier can be found in
dwm wiki at the following location:

I think so. In fact, I am not sure we still need this script at all, it is
stuff from 2002, Cyrus has came a long way since...

AFAIK, it hasn't changed, so we shouldn't need it.

Bug#69192: dpkg does not maintain a binary cache of its huge text

2009-11-21 Thread Adrian Glaubitz
Patrick,

I have been annoyed by this "feature" for years but actually never
checked whether there's a report on that. I'm subscribing to this
because
I would like to see a database-supported dpkg as well. I wonder why
that still hasn't been put into practice after 9 years since this bug
was reported. And yes, the arguments from the original poster still
apply today despite the much faster machines we run Debian on. I
played around with RPM-based distributions and since RPM uses a
DB-system (Berkely i.e.), it outperforms dpkg in this regard even
though APT itself could keep up easily.

As for now, you can workaround this definancy by putting your
root-partition (including /var where dpkg's database resides) on a
solid-state disk (SSD). This speeds up the loopkup dramatically and
makes installing packages real fun.

Still, dpkg should be heavily improved in this regard. Maybe it is the
turn of the Ubuntu-developers as they have the manpower to make a leap
forward here.

Let's hope for the best,

Adrian

Ok, it turns out that lastfmsubmit.py is considered obsolete upstream,
and has in fact way more seriuos problems. In the prepare function, it
sets the timeout to submit the current song to something like half the
song length or 4 minutes, minus the length of the **previous** song,
which is utterly confusing. I guess that this is just due to the
plugin being unmaintained for a long time.

I'd suggest removing the plugin right away because it's just useless
in the current state, or wait for upstream to hopefully remove it in
2.2.

When I've got a python program (e.g. duplicity) using the network, all I see

It would be nice if nethogs could display the same thing as top, which is the
name of the actual program, duplicity.

Hi François

This will keep me busy for a while!

I suppose that you, as a package maintainer, can compile rlwrap yourself.
Could you please re-configure it with

[fmarier] /usr/src/rlwrap-0.32 > ./configure --enable-debug
[fmarier] /usr/src/rlwrap-0.32 > make

Hopefully the Bug will manifest itself again (if it's not a HeisenBug...)
If so, could you send me the /tmp/rlwrap.debug file?

Thanks

Yep, that worked, together with the removal of the 'search' line which
complained about the no-floppy parameter. I logged in, ran
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc, explicitly selected /dev/sda to install onto,
and after that rebooted, and all is well again.

So, please detect the situation where leaving the system in its current
state would render GRUB useless, and adjust the default accordingly.

The default setting should be to NOT screw the user. :)

Bug#557427: cssc: many SCCS utilities are not in the default PATH

2009-11-21 Thread Dmitri Vorobiev
Package: cssc
Version: 1.0.1-4
Severity: wishlist

The `cssc' package provides a set of SCCS utilities with binaries
buried in /usr/lib/cssc. This bug is to request putting symlinks
to these utilities to /usr/bin to have them usable not only via
the `sccs' frontend but also directly.

Note that POSIX specifies that at least the following utilities
be available under the DEVELOPMENT option: `admin', `delta', `get',
`prs', `rmdel', `sact', `unget', `val', `what'. All those utilities
are already present in the cssc package, but not visible in the
default PATH.

The GNU make utility expects that the `get' command is available
when building SCCS-based projects. For example, consider the
following situation:

d...@cipher:/tmp/cssc$ ls
SCCS
d...@cipher:/tmp/cssc$ make
get SCCS/s.Makefile
1.1
4 lines
Hello World!
d...@cipher:/tmp/cssc$ ls
Makefile SCCS
d...@cipher:/tmp/cssc$

Here, `make' used `get' to retrive the Makefile itself. Currently,
`make' would not work properly with the default installation of
the cssc package.

Bug#317810: reduce Depends: gnome-volume-manager to Recommends

2009-11-21 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: gnome
Severity: normal

Hi,

gnome-volume-manager's functionality has been stripped down considerably
and I no longer see it as a requirement for a fully functional GNOME
desktop environment. Most of it's features are now included in
gvfs/gdu/nautilus, i.e. handling of removable storage devices,
cd/dvd,audio and photos (camera).

printers are handled better in cups directly these days, so this setting
is by default disabled in g-v-m.

we have a handler for webcam, where equivalent functionality is missing
in nautilus and the input device section is probably also obsolete
nowadays (at least none of them is enabled by default).

My suggestion is to downgrade g-v-m to suggests, so it is no longer
installed by default.

Cheers,
Michael

mind that Amazon is not the only data source where this is applicable.

Bug#557425: lenny->squeeze upgrade -> system no longer bootable

2009-11-21 Thread Josip Rodin
Package: grub-pc
Severity: grave

I'm typing this from Windows because the squeeze upgrade a few minutes ago
rendered all my Linux GRUB menu entries useless - they all report "command
not found" either for "linux" or for "initrd".

During the upgrade, I saw three debconf prompts, and just pressed enter on
all of them. I did not want to change the kernel parameters because there
was seemingly no need to do so, and I did not want to reinstall grub into
/dev/sda because I was hoping to avoid rendering my system unbootable
because of a new version of the bootloader. A quick google search indicates
this might be just like #497791, so it seems that the lack of reinstalling
was exactly what caused the problem. Well, that's just inane.

I'll go reboot and try to insert 'insmod linux' in those Linux menu entries
that no longer work.

Bug#547623: thunar: MS Office .doc treated as plain text document which means OOo doesn't launch rather text editor

2009-11-21 Thread John Lindgren
I did some debugging on this. In short, Thunar does not handle multiple
MIME types being specified for the same file extension. For a given
extension, Thunar seems to use whatever MIME type is listed last
in /usr/share/mime/globs. Relevant code is at
thunar-vfs-mime-legacy.c:660 (Thunar 1.0.1).

There may be extensions which can legitimately be used for more than one
MIME type, I don't know. But in this case, I think the problem is with
the MIME database, not Thunar. That is, .ogg should always be
audio/ogg, and .doc should always be application/msword. Correct me if
I'm wrong.

Patches for the relevant packages attached:

shared-mime-info: /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml
kdelibs5-data: /usr/share/mime/packages/kde.xml

I'm not sure this is really a upstream problem. It's gross as all
heck that the wpa_gui is using a facility originally from wpa_debug.c
to communicate with wpa_supplicant. That's an upstream problem, yes
and they ought to be ashamed of themselves. :-)

However, it was Debian which added the patch which caused wpa_printf()
(called from wpa_msg) to be routed to syslog. That wasn't an upstream
choice; that was Debian's choice. And that is what caused the
problem; although wpa_msg() looked like a syslog-like facility, it's
not being used for syslog, and in fact they have to be sent at a
sufficiently high priority for wpa_gui to receive them. This is
unfortunately, high enough that that it causes a real mess in syslog.

So one workaround is to simply edit the file:

  /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/fi.epitest.hostap.WPASupplicant.service

and remove the -s from from the exec line. This will prevent all
wpa_supplicant messages hitting the syslog, and that is what upstream
wpa_supplicant binaries will do --- the -s option was added by
debian/patches/11_syslog.patch.

The other thing we could do is to hack the 11_syslog.patch to filter
out WPA_EVENT_SCAN_RESULTS (which is defined in src/common/wpa_ctrl.h)
to be "CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS", as being far too frequent to deserve
to be syslogged at all. That's probably the right fix, but I'm lazy,
so I just used the workaround to prevent my SSD from being totally
overwhelmed by massive numbers of syslogs. :-(

- Ted

Bug#557422: crosshurd: fix read-only boot on hurd-i386

2009-11-21 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: crosshurd

Severity: normal

Hello,

native-install tries to cope with a user booting a just-crosshurded
system with --readonly, however since the fs is RO, the settrans call
that sets up pflocal can't work.

Another way to go is to use bash's OSTYPE variable which is gnu on
hurd-i386 and linux-gnu on linux. That way we can move the writability
to the top of the file.

Bug#557218: nexuiz-data does not fit on a single CD

2009-11-21 Thread Stefano Zacchiroli
On Fri, Nov 20, 2009 at 03:51:55PM +0100, Stefano Zacchiroli wrote:
> severity 557218 important

JFTR, when I set this severity, I meant to _downgrade_ the severity from
RC, rather than to _upgrade_ it from normal. In fact, I had missed back
then, the severity normal set by Phil a few minutes before (either due
to mail lag in the BTS, or more simply due to a missing reload on my
side).

Thanks to Rhonda, I've discovered this misunderstanding on IRC.

BTW, the rationale from my initially high severity was because I
personally consider a serious issue for a package not to be able to be
delivered to users that are still bound to use CDs. As long as we have
CDs as a medium to distribute our distro, I believe we should be able to
make packages fit on them. But of course it is not my call, and Rhonda
is right in stating that it is written nowhere that packages should
actually fit on CDs. My main point was raising the attention on this
issue.

As far as this bug is concerned, and as long as there is no specific
decision on the matter, feel free to set the severity of this bug to
what pleases the maintainer.

And of course thanks to Bruno which has worked on the package split,
this bug will be fixed/moot any time soon apparently.

Sorry for the noise,
Cheers.

Bug#557421: lmms after those errors remains connected to jack

2009-11-21 Thread wzab
I've just stated, that after those error messages lmms remains connected
to jack, and is able to output sound through jack.
Only those annoying message windows appear from time to time (mainly
after change of instrument or other settings in lmms).

Then install kdelibs5-dbg as well.

On the contrary, upgrade to 2.2.1-2 and follow instructions in
/usr/share/doc/amarok/README.Debian if you are upgrading from 2.2.0 or
earlier.

Yes; we know about this and we have already reported it. Look at #557387

This looks to be a kernel issue and would be nice to try latest
version of d-i to see if it happens or not.

Mind to retest it?

This is probably the result of moving to client-side windows. A lot of
code has changed, and even though it means less DirectFB specific code
to maintain in the long term, it has obviously not been tested enough.

Since none of the GTK+ maintainers use DirectFB, the only thing we can
do is apply patches that other people might have tested.

Cheers,

Bug#526471: Could you please followup on this?

2009-11-21 Thread Francesco Poli
Hi,
could you please add some comment to bug #526471 ?

I sent a (cleaned up) patch in
http://bugs.debian.org/526471#32
http://bugs.debian.org/526471#37

Several new versions of pbuilder have been uploaded without
incorporating my patch: I am beginning to be sick and tired of
repeatedly applying my patch and locally rebuilding the package...
:-(

Could you please explain why my patch is being rejected, no, even
worse, why is it being *ignored*?

Needless to say, I would love to see my patch applied and incorporated
in the official pbuilder version, before the next upload happens...

Please let me know.

Bug#357297: This new behaviour is really annoying and really should be totally reverted as a horrible idea.

2009-11-21 Thread Lennart Sorensen
Having xscreensaver autostart is just wrong. The way to disable it is
way too complicated for most users to understand, and it still interferes
with kde and gnome's own screensaver setups.

Please revert this completely and never do it again. It is simply the
wrong way to do things.

Every desktop manager has a way to start and select screensavers. Having
xscreensaver but in the way simply annoys users and confuses everyone.
it is easy to enable xscreensaver from any window manager and desktop.
It is currently very hard to prevent xscreensaver from running. hence the
current setup is just wrong. Wrong wrong wrong.

Hello,

Starting from Python 2.6, the installation paths for distutils have

When rebuilt against python-all{,-dev,-dbg} (and thus python2.6) from

Bug#557416: group "motion" isn't created if user "motion" already exists

2009-11-21 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Package: motion
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu karmic ubuntu-patch
Version: 3.2.11-2
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

This report has also been filed here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/394755

In debian/motion.postinst, in function add_group_if_missing 'id -g'
returns the effective group id of user "motion" whatever it is. The
goal of this function should be to test is the group "motion" exists
and create it if it is not the case.

If the group "motion" doesn't exists before the upgrade but the user
"motion" does then this function doesn't create the group and the call
to "chown motion:motion" fails

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

  * Fixed debian/motion.postinst : Really test if group "motion" exits
(LP: #394755)

We thought you might be interested in doing the same.

Thanks.

This is all fixed in the VCS which stages the next upload already, as addressed
by #548995 and LP: #307493

Feel free to do a debcheckout and check that it is fixed correctly.

Bug#557418: crosshurd: The usr->. symlink is deprecated

2009-11-21 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: crosshurd

Severity: normal

Hello,

The usr->. symlink has been posing too many issues with shlibdeps & such
so we ended up deciding that we don't want to support it any more.
crosshurd should thus not even propose it.

Bug#557415: udev with 2.6.25.1

2009-11-21 Thread joblack
Package: udev
Version: 147-4
Severity: normal

I'm using a customized 2.6.25.1 kernel and after the apt-get update the udev
didn't work anymore.

As I can't upgrade to 2.6.26+ because of some personal modifications it's the
question why you included the check in /etc/init.d/udev

It seem to work fine after I removed the check for my 2.6.25.1 kernel.

If not needed please keep 2.6.25.x in the support.

2009-11-21 Thread Petr Salinger

Hi.

the current version fails to build on kfreebsd-i386,
but builds on kfreebsd-amd64.

could you join a buildd log to stop the problem

They are in standard location next to other build-logs, see

https://buildd.debian.org/~luk/status/package.php?p=libsdp

https://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?pkg=libsdp&arch=kfreebsd-i386&ver=1.1.99-1&stamp=1256544692&file=log&as=raw

I am not sure whether this package should be linux specific.
Please decide yourself. For linux specific package, alter
Architecture line into "linux-any".

I looked into linux-any and its still no in Debian policy and not
reconised by the tools, so it seems not usable right now

From your answer it is still unclear for me

whether the package should be used only on Linux.

The linux-any currently corresponds to

armel lpia i386 ia64 alpha amd64 armeb arm hppa m32r m68k mips mipsel
powerpc ppc64 s390 s390x sh3 sh3eb sh4 sh4eb sparc

Bug#543362: x11-ssh-askpass: Debian bug 543362: WM_TRANSIENT_FOR X Property Set To Self In Violation of ICCCM

2009-11-21 Thread Jim Knoble

Hi, Phil. Thanks for alerting me to this.

I (rather obviously) haven't done much with x11-ssh-askpass for quite
some time.

However, I seem to recall that setting the WM_TRANSIENT_FOR property was
necessary to explain to window managers such as Window Maker that the
x11-ssh-askpass window was not an application window but rather a ...
well, transient dialog window.

I think that Dave Harding's reading of section 4.1.2.6 is overly strict.
I think it rather obvious that (1) x11-ssh-askpass is not an
application, but a dialog window, and that acting as its own parent is
appropriate; and that (2) alternatives such as gnome-ssh-askpass have
the ability to set other, GNOME-specific (or, more recently,
freedesktop.org-specific) hints about its function and decoration,
eliminating the need for WM_TRANSIENT_FOR altogether.

I don't really remember whether, at the time i wrote x11-ssh-askpass, i
actually found other applications that used WM_TRANSIENT_FOR the same
way, or whether i merely read of it somewhere. However, i can't imagine
that i actually invented the technique ... i'm not that smart. :)

I suppose it could be argued that the root window of the screen
displaying x11-ssh-askpass, or the root window of screen 0, should (or
could) be listed as the parent in the WM_TRANSIENT_FOR property. I
don't know whether that would work, either for Awesome or for Window
Maker or any other window manager. I'm not really in a position to
develop x11-ssh-askpass further and try that out.

In my opinion, a somewhat loose interpretation of the function of
WM_TRANSIENT_FOR is a much better solution than using OVERRIDE_REDIRECT,
which is what many similar dialog-based programs (ab)used at the time of
x11-ssh-askpass's genesis.

And, as Dave admits, Awesome should be fixed; infinite loops looking for
a transient window's parent are fairly brittle behavior.

Best,
Jim

Use FilesMatch and SetHandler on apache setups (Closes: #491928)

AddType is long-time deprecated to set a handler, but using AddHandler
allows the, usually unwanted with security implications, execution of
whatever file matching '.php'. Therefore use FilesMatch to define a
stricter execution scope.

Add a versioned dependency on libtool 2.2 (Closes: #548015)

This sort of defeats the extra code in debian/rules to allow building
the package with older versions, but since we now use libtoolize
--instal to avoid extra packages the code in rules should probably be
dropped.

Bug#557411: mplayer: Please enable radio and radio-capture support

Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc3+svn20090405-1
Severity: wishlist

Please add --enable-radio and --enable-radio-caputre to the configure
flags.

I have a USB based radio receiver card which acts as a usb-audio
card. mplayer is really the best way I found so far to use that thing,
however I need to rebuild the debian package to add these

Bug#557412: debian-bts-control: CC's debian-bts-emailaddress, literally

2009-11-21 Thread Sven Joachim
Package: dpkg-dev-el
Version: 31.0-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

When typing M-x debian-bts-control (or M-x emacs-bts-control) in a
buffer that is already in mail/message mode (e.g. when replying to a bug
report), it inserts the header¹:

which is somewhat less than useful. The following patch should replace
that with the address of the actual control server:

Hello,

i would say yes this package is from the infiniband stack used in
clustering and i have not see them running on other os than linux.

ok, so if i put that on architecture it will prevent the build for
kfreebsd right, i will also have to remove other arch maybe.

Cheers

Bug#556388: Problem with cyrus-common-2.2.postinst script

This definitely is a long standing issue. And I'm not sure how we should
handle it. The command cyrus-makedirs, which also calls the find you
mentioned is making sure that the directory structure you configured is
actually available and has the right ownerships.

The script is still the same as provided by HMH for older versions of
cyrus-imapd.

Henrique, you probably know this better than anyone else in the
packaging team, so:

Could we skip this script during package upgrades?
If not: Could we tune this script to skip chown'ing during upgrades?

Also: Could the logic in cyrus-commons postinst script bve wrong?
It is currently (in the 2.3 branch):

> if [ "$2" = "" ] || dpkg --compare-versions "$( echo $2 | cut -d-
> -f2)" lt "2.3.14" ; then
> cyrus-makedirs --cleansquat
> fi

However, I think it should be "-f1" instead of "-f2" in the call to cut.
I actually even think we don't need the "--cleansquat" here, even during
upgrade from 2.2, since the format doesn't seem to have changed.

Regards,
Sven
