These plugins are way too small to make it relevant to package each of
them separately.

I encourage anyone interested in rhythmbox plugins to start collecting
third-party plugins and put them in a single package.

Bug#626955: libgl1-mesa-dri: Version 7.10.2 does not work with gnome-shell, 7.10-4 works ok

2011-05-16 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

> I'll do that, but honestly, mesa is still a new thing for me, could
> you please let me know how to build r600c instead of r600g ? Is it

Apparently, appending the following flags to the default ones
mentioned in the ./configure call on the howto does the trick:
  --with-dri-drivers=r600 --disable-gallium-r600 --disable-gallium-r300

(Passing --disable-gallium would mean turning off some other options
since OpenVG can't be built without gallium; disabling r300g is also
needed if you haven't installed llvm development packages, hence the
last flag.)

If the issue persists, please file the bug upstream and tell us about
the bug number/URL so that we can track it, a good start is likely to
be the Mesa product on:
  http://bugs.freedesktop.org/

KiBi.

I bumped Greame about modifying the Jam files slightly making
packaging a bit more easy.

I have a first version of Jam based packaging available here (Argyll

Hi,

| Resolving deltas: 100% (314631/314631), done.

So, yeah, I specified a target directory, there's indeed a bug: please check
for that directory's being created, instead of the default. :)

This is standard behavior.

That looks like some app in the session doesn't respond correctly. Try
to quit everything (including stuff in the systray) and provide the list
of running processes for your users before hitting the logout button.

Looks like a Consolekit issue, read README.Debian in xfce4 and
xfce4-session. Is upower installed, by the way?

There's nothing to debug with gdb here.

Not really. Slim has an issue but gdm should work fine.

Yes, it has. This fix is indeed in upstream 3.5.7. I was doing bug

forgot to do so anbd moved to something else. Thanks for reminding

Hmh, but this is the whole point of that popup. If loading the tabs
makes midori crash, you don't want them to load at all. Resetting the
session means exactly that, you forget about everything open.

What would you expect exactly?

alright; what if you build r600c instead? It's good to see that

Bug#626885: system hangs on shutdown if systemd is pid 1

I tried the reversing the following commit:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/systemd/commit/?id=0595f9a1c182a84581749823ef47c5f292e545f9

The behavior is still the same, unfortunately.

reading the log for #624600, i don't think this is the same bug as
#626885 at all. For instance, Sam Morris reports that ctrl-alt-delete
does nothing for him. But for me, it has a clear and immediate effect.

Thanks for the prompt responses.

Regards,

--dkg

PS the git repo pointed to by the Git-Vcs headers
(git://git.err.no/systemd/) doesn't seem to include the 25-2 changes on
the debian branch. Could you publish those so the rest of us can follow
along at home? ;)

Also, while git.err.no resolves via IPv6, your git daemon on that host
appears to be listening on IPv4 only:

0 dkg@pip:~$ echo | socat TCP4:git.err.no:git STDIO
0 dkg@pip:~$ echo | socat TCP6:git.err.no:git STDIO
2011/05/17 01:46:28 socat[1962] E connect(3, AF=10
[2001:16d8:ee00:0092::::0002]:9418, 28): Connection refused
1 dkg@pip:~$

dunno if you care, but i'd be happy to connect via IPv6 if possible.

Bug#627027: evince-gtk: registers unsupported image/* (e.g., image/jpeg) MIME type with high priority

2011-05-16 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Package: evince-gtk
Version: 3.0.0-3
Severity: important
Justification: breaks run-mailcap, as used by e.g. mutt
Files: /usr/lib/mime/packages/evince-gtk

Hi,

Whenever I try to open a jpeg attachment in mutt, I get an evince
window with

Unable to open document

File type JPEG image (image/jpeg) is not supported

Seems weird --- why is mutt (meaning "run-mailcap --action=view")
asking for evince, then?

| $ grep jpeg /etc/mailcap
| image/jpeg; /usr/bin/xli -quiet '%s'; test=test -n "$DISPLAY";
description=JPEG Image; nametemplate=%s.jpg
| image/jpeg; display 'jpeg:'%s''; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
| image/pjpeg; display 'jpeg:'%s''; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"

Checking under /usr/lib/applications, it seems xli registers
image/jpeg with a priority of 3, and imagemagick uses a priority of 2.
But evince-gtk has, in /usr/lib/mime/packages/evince-gtk:

image/*; evince %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"; nametemplate=%s.dummy;
priority=5

If I remember correctly, evince 2 did support JPEGs, making this entry
less harmful then. Known problem? Any way I can help?

This is related to but not identical to Bug#619564, which discusses
the mailcap priority from the time when evince did support displaying
such typical images.

alright; what if you build r600c instead? It's good to see that
current r600g is alright (as was 7.10), but knowing if r600c is still
buggy was my point, so that you could report a bug upstream to
possibly get that fixed.

I guess you're in the case where r600g (gallium) works OK, while r600c
(classic) doesn't. It would be nice to figure out whether mesa master
is showing the same bugs. You could try the following instructions to
test that:
   http://pkg-xorg.alioth.debian.org/howto/build-mesa.html

But beware: those haven't been updated yet to the new options/flags
for radon hardware, so you'll probably have to specify some other
radeon or r* options/flags.

FWIW, "--enable-gallium-radeon" has been renamed to
--enable-gallium-r300"¹, and since commit 0fecb928² requires LLVM to be
installed. So Arief should pass
"--enable-gallium-r600 --disable-gallium-r300" to `configure'.

Thanks Cyril and Sven,

Just finished compiling upstream mesa from git with the steps as you've
mentioned.

Not sure how to start gnome-shell with all the exports override, so I
just did a make install.

Result is, gnome-shell works ok, as it was before in 7.10-4.

All the best.

Please send a full kernel boot log, and the output of 'lspci -vnn'.

That's very unlikely since I use it myself. I switched back to the
lucid package a while ago because I got tired of having emacs lock up
and peg the cpu any time you were unexpectedly disconnected from a
--daemon session (i.e. if you lose the connection from a remote
emacsclient buffer).

When I investigated (IIRC I discussed it upstream), it looked like there
was a fundamental problem in the way GTK+ handles X connections, and
there was nothing emacs could do about it. Since I didn't care *at all*
about the GTK+ interface I dropped it.

> Feel free to close/wontfix/whatever.

I suspect there's a real bug here, so we'll leave it open. I imagine we
(or upstream) will track it down eventually.

Thanks for the help

The bug fix from the report on Bugzilla has been included in stable
release 2.6.38.5 and Debian's version 2.6.38-5.

Does this version fix the problem for you?

I agree - if we can ensure that wheezy's udev works with a squeeze
kernel then it will simplify the upgrade process.

Bug#612504: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#612504: xfce4-session: Attempted suspend

2011-05-16 Thread Frank Zambrini
With xfce 4.6 I switched to gdm from slim and everything was working
fine.

However after upgrading to xfce 4.8, the session manager broke again
for both gdm and slim.

If "Prompt on Logout" is unchecked from the Session and Startup menu,
clicking the logout button on the panel causes the session to restart
back to the slim/gdm login screen.

If "Prompt on Logout" is checked, then the logout window will be
displayed (after waiting about 30 seconds) but only has options for
shutdown, restart, and Log Out. Suspend is missing from the menu, but I
can still put the computer in standby with "sudo pm-suspend."

I did a backtrace of xfce4-session (using slim, w/out Prompt on Logout),
but I don't know if it will do much good. For some reason, when gdb is
attached to xfce4-session (from a VT), clicking the logout button will
not cause the session to restart. Instead, I get a "Failed to connect to
session manager" error message. Then when I quit gdb, the session
restarts and returns to the login screen.

If there is anything else I can do let me know. Maybe I should file a
bug against consolekit?

Bug#627025: perl: data loss in output when both stdout and stderr are redirected to a pipe

2011-05-16 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: perl
Version: 5.12.3-6

Justification: causes non-serious data loss

When stdout and stderr are both redirected to a pipe, some of the
output data can be lost!

I can reproduce this bug with:

#!/usr/bin/env perl

use strict;
use SVN::Client;

my $ctx = new SVN::Client;
$ctx->log(\@ARGV, 'HEAD', 1, 0, undef, \&log_receiver);

sub log_receiver
  {
print "@_[0..4]\n";
  }

For instance, with a large local repository:

-rw-r--r-- 1 vinc17 vinc17 4943992 2011-05-17 04:46:14 out

The shell doesn't matter: same problem with zsh, bash and dash.
The problem is even more visible when using "less".

  ./svn2log wd 2>&1 | less -M

then type [End]. The number of lines changes each time.

I couldn't reproduce the problem with a remote repository,
perhaps because of some race condition that occurs when one
gets data much faster.

The problem doesn't occur if I don't redirect stderr.

OK, there is a documented erratum (#400) affecting timer wake-up on this
processor. But the kernel is supposed to recognise and work around it
already.

Can you provide a more complete kernel boot log (either from 'dmesg', or
if that does not include the first messages, from /var/log/messages)?

If you boot with the additional kernel parameter 'idle=mwait', does that
fix the problem?

Bug#627022: wl-draft-reply triggers error

2011-05-16 Thread David A . Thompson
Package: wl-beta
Version: 2.15.9+0.20100801-2

The problematic behavior: pressing 'A' while a message is selected in a

If L349, (message r-to-list), is commented out, the problematic

2011-05-16 Thread Kevin Vargo
Package: qa.debian.org
Severity: important

After upgrading (yesterday, 5/15) to 2.6.38-2, xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.1-2,
fglrx no longer works. X reports only "No protocol specified." I've tried
the packaged fglrx (11-4-2), direct installer from ati.com of 11-4 and
11-5(DKMS fails due to kernel lock change).
Also tried reverting to 2.6.32-5 kernel, un/reinstalling driver each time.
Results are the same: blank/black screen, "No protocol specified."

I've got a Radeon HD 4250; radeon module hard-locks the display (can still
ssh in and reboot, but that's about it). I.e., 'radeon' driver isn't an option.

I know fglrx is binary/non-free, but would appreciate any work-arounds.

Bug#627018: libusb-1.0-0: does not work if CONFIG_TIMERFD is disabled

2011-05-16 Thread Jamey Sharp
Package: libusb-1.0-0
Version: 2:1.0.8-2
Severity: normal

I inadvertently tested lsusb 001 and libusb-1.0 on an i386 2.6.32 kernel
that had CONFIG_TIMERFD disabled.

In that configuration lsusb hangs on the first control transfer it
tries, which with `lsusb -v` was a request for the languages supported
for string descriptors. I got this output:

---
# LIBUSB_DEBUG=4 lsusb -v
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
libusb:error [handle_events] backend handle_events failed with error -99
libusb:error [libusb_cancel_transfer] cancel transfer failed error -5
---

After that, it did nothing but call poll every 60 seconds.

The same kernel worked with libusb-0.1-4 2:0.1.12-16 and usbutils
0.87-5. I can provide more information on versions or re-test my old
configurations, if that helps.

When I rebuilt the kernel with timerfd support turned on (and no other
changes), `lsusb -v` from the new usbutils worked fine.

In a quick glance at the source for libusb-1.0, I think it was intended to
support systems without the timerfd syscall, but I guess that path
doesn't get tested much?

If that function was the only one using the function pointer in question then
that analysis would be correct.

const ERR_FNS *ERR_get_implementation(void)
{
err_fns_check();
return err_fns;
}

However it's expected that some other functions such as the above which rely
on it. Imagine an architecture which has 64bit pointers but only 32bit
atomicity for memory writes. If one thread writes a value to err_fns and gets
interrupted before completing the operation then another thread could return
from the first line of err_fns_check() and allow ERR_get_implementation() to
return data from a half-written memory location.

I could be wrong in this analysis, it would be good if someone who knows more
about Valgrind than I do could check this out.

Bug#534892: False positive ?

2011-05-16 Thread Scott Schaefer
I am a bit confused... I am certainly no Helgrind expert, and I will
concede that it may
know more about C than I do. However, this certainly appears to me to
be a false positive.

The variable err_fns is declared as:
static const ERR_FNS *err_fns = NULL;

Your subject line states "err_fns_check() has a race if a pointer
assignment is not
atomic". Except, because the assignment is inside of
CRYPTO_w_lock(),CRYPTO_w_unlock(),
no race condition exists (assuming these two functions are implemented
correctly).

In the body you state "Helgrind flags the function ... due to there
being no lock on the
first check of err_fns". However, this is a test and return. What
possible

reason is there for requiring a lock on the test ?

Then, 'stop' tries to close all managed crypto devices and aborts *with
an error* if it cannot. 'Start' tries to open all managed crypto
devices, and aborts *with an error* if it cannot.

And 'restart' should not be supported, and return with the appropriate
error, or it could just be stop+start. You likely don't want to run
this on package upgrades.

You'd still have to call 'stop' and abort the package removal in prerm
[when removing the package. You will have to diferentiate the various
reasons for why prerm is called] if it cannot close all crypto devices
it manages. And 'start' on postinst, of course.

Well, I think it is not appropriate to even let the package get removed
in the first place if there are devices still open.

Well it looks to be working properly now.
(or at least startup dialog correctly describe behaviour,
also in Polish translation)

Still I think that post-crash startup dialog should be changed.
Button "Do not restore session / tabs", should be changed
to checkbox. because after clicking it, there is no
way back (it deactivates), and all tabs will be lost
(hovewer one can Close this dialog using X button or Alt-F4,
and restart midori, but this is not perfect).

'usb 6-2' is the address that Linux assigned to the device. The
messages with these prefix are generated by the USB core, not a driver.

Agreed.

from Linux 2.6.38 and the fact that the behaviour under 2.6.32 is the

Because the initscript returned status 0 when there were still
cryptsetup-managed dm-crypt devices active? If it does that, it is
broken.

Because the package allowed itself to be uninstalled while the initscript
was returning an error? If it does that, it is broken IMO.

Because the initscript returned status 0 when there were NO
cryptsetup-managed dm-crypt devices, but some other sort of dm-crypt
device? The user should have known better.

Yes, the package will be unremovable [unless you edit the initscript]
until all crypt devices are closed. That's how it is supposed to work in
the first place IMHO.

But I don't feel strongly about this.

The conffile issue is not going to change, ever. Our respect for the
local administrator during package upgrades It is one of the major things
that sets Debian apart from the rest.

Initscript status codes could be changed, but that would require a very
very large amount of work. THAT is out-of-topic for this thread.

Note that I am against cryptsetup allowing itself to be removed while

Bug#627012: version 5.0.2 released

2011-05-16 Thread Steve M. Robbins
Package: gmp
Severity: wishlist

- Forwarded message from Torbjorn Granlund -

Date: Sun, 08 May 2011 13:03:58 +0200
From: Torbjorn Granlund
To: gmp-annou...@gmplib.org
Subject: GMP 5.0.2 released!

A new release of the GNU Multiple Precision Arithmetic Library (GMP)
is now available. The new release is identified as 5.0.2.

The new release can be downloaded from the main GNU ftp site:
  bzip2 format: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gmp/gmp-5.0.2.tar.bz2
  gzip format: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gmp/gmp-5.0.2.tar.gz

These files can also be found from the main GMP domain, e.g.
ftp://ftp.gmplib.org/pub/gmp/gmp-5.0.2.tar.bz2.

The changes between this release and the previous release are limited
to various safe bug fixes and portability improvements.

When we initially announced GMP 5.0, we cautioned about the large
amount of new code in this release series. We now feel that the code
base is mature, and consider 5.0.2 as a stable release. We recommend
everyone to switch from earlier GMP releases to this release.

While GMP bugs do happen, the absolutely most common cause for
incorrect computations with GMP is bugs in the compiler used for
building he library. It cannot be said enough times: Please run "make
check" after you've built your library. And if "make check" stops
with an error, do not use the compiled library. When this happens,
you've almost surely run into a compiler bug, not a library bug, since
we've of course made sure the library passes its own test suite. The
first thing to try at this point is using a different compiler. See
also http://gmplib.org/. Of the more recent GCC releases, version
4.3.2 is known to miscompile this GMP release on all 64-bit platforms;
this manifests itself at a check failure in tests/mpz/t-root.c.

The GMP 5.0 release series would not have been possible without the
very devoted work of Niels Mller and Marco Bodrato. As usual,
Torbjrn Granlund coordinated the development and release, and did a
fair amount of development work himself.

Changes between GMP version 5.0.1 and 5.0.2

  BUGS FIXED
  * Many minor bugs related to portability fixed.

  * The support for HPPA 2.0N now works, after an assembly bug fix.

  * A test case type error has been fixed. The symptom of this bug
was spurious 'make check' failures.

  SPEEDUPS
  * None, except indirectly through recognition of new CPUs.

  FEATURES
  * Fat builds are now supported for 64-bit x86 processors also under Darwin.

  MISC
  * None.

There is a public repository for GMP, please see the GMP web site at

Bug#580070: python-central: Another failure string

2011-05-16 Thread Stanley Pinchak
Package: python-central
Version: 0.6.17
Followup-For: Bug #580070

I want to confirm that this bug is still present and there are additional
strings that dpkg -S emits which cause the links_in_packages routine to
fail. I have a mature machine and finally got around to updating dpkg on it to
one of the modern extra verbose versions. Apparently some of the cruft built
up over the years included a package which did not have an architecture
specified. This caused pycentral to fail when it encountered the string
"missing architecture".

I was able to fix this using the technique suggested by Athanasius.
On line 1996 I inserted the following before the line.split call:

if line == 'missing architecture': continue

I second Athanasius' call for more robust checks in this section of code.
This bug will continue to hit users with crufty machines, most likely in
the middle of a large update/upgrade.

Bug#627007: Severe "Processor Leak" when Pointer is on GTK/GDK Window

2011-05-16 Thread Elliott Mitchell
Package: libgtk2.0-0
Version: 2.20.1-2
Severity: important

Seems a rather serious processor consumption bug appeared in the
libgtk2.0-0 package somewhere between versions 2.12.12-1~lenny2 and
2.20.1-2.

I'm unsure whether any special configuration is required to tweak this.
The only thing that comes to mind is I've got the traditional
FocusFollowsMouse, and for the moment metacity is my window manager. This
might also require a computer with a single processor (I suspect not, but
I could be wrong; at a minimum multiple cores would likely make this less
noticable). The steps are simple to reproduce, start one of the many
effected programs. When the mouse cursor is over the program's window the
program, X-server and window manager will all be fighting to reach 100%
processor utilization. Move the mouse cursor off the window, even if the
window retains focus, processor utilization will drop to idle.

This effects nearly every package that links to libgtk/libgdk, including:
(but not limited to)

abiword
galculator
epiphany-browser
gnome-terminal
gxine
wireshark
xsane

I've managed to find a *small* number of programs that are not effected,
and some with more complicated behavior. The only two I've found that
appear completely immune are gnome-panel and iceweasel. galeon displays
this behavior when the pointer is over the menus, but not when the
pointer is over the central browser portion of the window. I'm theorizing
galeon handles all drawing in the central area, whereas epiphany-browser
may create a GTK canvas widget and allow GTK/GDK to wrap all X
interactions.

I'd have to rate this as pretty severe given the number of packages hurt
by this (the above list isn't even close to exhaustive).

Entities can be removed after the conversion, and I can help for this as well.

I would like the English pages to be converted to Unicode, and offered my help
a couple of monthes ago. I proposed to first go to the common denominator of
iso-8859-1 and Unicode, which is ASCII plus entities, and then to switch
encoding, and then to remove the entities.

I sent this to http://bugs.debian.org/567781#77 and I thought it was accepted
by the WWW team after discussion on IRC:

http://meetbot.debian.net/debian-www/2011/debian-www.2011-02-15-21.30.html

The advantage if this proposition is that the work can be distributed over
time and people.

What are the other plans ? If it is to have a massive overnight transition,
given my timezone, you can probably count me out…

Have a nice day,

Bug#614182: calc and writer crash on close if tools|macros|run macro was opened

2011-05-16 Thread William Whalley
I can confirm that the bug happens just as Alex posted--under some
conditions.

On one Debian wheezy system running LibreOffice version 1:3.3.2-2 I see
the bug. This Debian was updated from squeeze. When Tools/Macro/Run
Macro is used to invoke the macro, the macro runs, and LibreOffice
crashes when exited. When the macro is invoked from a push button
control or from Tools/Macros/Organize Macros/LibreOffice Base, there is
no crash on exit.

On another Debian wheezy system, installed fresh in Virtualbox within
the past few weeks, and kept up to date, I do not see the bug. This also
has LibreOffice version 1:3.3.2-2.

In this case I think it is better to not enable it into default
busybox and you do it locally until you get something usable and
propose it to get into Debian.

Bug#615157: Using -Werror in CFLAGS for a debian package build

2011-05-16 Thread Wouter Verhelst
Hi -devel,

I was working on nbd-server upstream, and so had ran ./configure with
CFLAGS='-Wall -Werror', which I consider good practice when writing C
code.

What I didn't notice immediately was that gcc was emitting some
warnings, but that the -Werror option was not honored for those
warnings. Investigating turned up #615157 (Cc'd): the gcc maintainers
have decided to disable -Werror for some new warnings, because otherwise
it would cause FTBFS bugs in packages that have -Werror set in their
debian/rules file.

IMHO, this is the wrong way to handle such things.

First and foremost, I do not believe that setting -Werror in a
debian/rules file is the best way to maintain a package; -Werror is a
development option which should not be used in a release build (which a
Debian package is). When a package sets -Werror in its debian/rules
file, it *will* FTBFS when the default compiler is changed, while not
necessarily breaking the package itself. I don't think it adds value.

That's a personal opinion, however, and we don't have a policy on this;
so if a maintainer is willing to deal with the fallout of their packages
failing to build when the default compiler is changed, that should
probably be their problem. So long as they are ready to receive FTBFS
bugs and fix them in a timely manner, oh well. It might still be an
annoyance for a user who wants to build a package on a different
compiler than what happens to be the default one, but it's not a fatal
problem. And I can see how using -Werror *might* increase the quality of
a package; some warnings are emitted on only some architectures, so
having -Werror *could* ensure that architecture-specific bugs are
eliminated before they potentially become a problem. It's not totally
silly, but it still seems a bit excessive.

At any rate, all that is undermined if gcc does not turn all warnings
into errors; if a maintainer uses -Werror in a package, that means they
*want* their package to FTBFS on warnings. Reducing the effect of
-Werror would not seem to help these maintainers; presumably they want
the warnings to be fixed in their source anyway, because eventually this
breakage of -Werror will be reverted, and then their packages will FTBFS
again. And while it's a very bad idea to introduce RC bugs in your
reverse dependencies when we're near or in a freeze, I was under the
impression that we're not currently in such a time, which would suggest
that doing so would be acceptable currently.

Additionally, reducing the effect of -Werror in that manner has an
effect on those who use Debian sid as a development environment; put
otherwise, the Debian default compiler is used for more than just Debian
packages, and I don't think we should be mucking with it in this manner.

Thoughts?

Hello,

daisy-player currently does not enter testing automatically because it's

Does the udisks dependency really need to be strict? As I understand
it, udisks is only a help to daisy-player, so it could be a Recommends
only, which nowadays has the same effect as a Depends (i.e. installed by
default), whithout making daisy-player uninstallable on all !linux

Yair, it may be a little bit before you see progress on this because
pam-krb5 is nearly the last project I have left that doesn't have a test
suite, and I've been promising myself that I'd add a test suite before
adding additional major new functionality. I've been really feeling the
pain of lack of automated testing and inability to safely refactor the
code.

I was probably just being too sensitive to this. Thanks! The Policy bug
has been committed, so we're good to go on prerequisites.

That means all but Linux actually (thus including hurd-i386), please

Bug#627000: kipi-plugins of experimental must on amd64 depend on libkdcraw9 and libkexiv2-9

2011-05-16 Thread Javier Ortega Conde (Malkavian)
Package: kipi-plugins
Version: 1.2.0-2+b1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

kipi-plugins of experimental version for amd64 depends on libkdcraw8 and
libkexiv2-8 and not libkdcraw9 and
libkexiv2-9. That makes impossible to update and use kipi-plugins with gwenview
(and probably others) from
experimental, because old version makes gwenview crash if you try to use
plugins (I supose that it's due it's
a version for KDE 4.4 programs and not valid for KDE4.6 ones)

Maybe there wasn't the needed dependencies for amd64, but now they are. Or
maybe they causes problems... I
don't know, but if not, please, change the dependencies.

Thank you really for your time :)

Yes, I think it's very unlikely that any of this will change in Debian;
it's much more likely that Debian will migrate, at least partially, away
from SysV init scripts entirely towards something like upstart or systemd,
which make all of those proposals moot.

Yes I don't ;-) and also their exit codes in some cases.
But that's a different construction site ...

Here the problem is simply:
- dm-crypt devices might be open
- cryptsetup might be removed but not purged
- a user does /etc/init.d/cryptdisks stop (perhaps even from a script)
and believes in good faith that if $?=0 (and especially as even no
warnings appeared anyway) that his data is now secured
- but it is not.

Phew I guess there are already some requests against the policy open,..
both for this config-file-weirdness and for adhering to the (not so
unreasonable) LSB exit codes.

I've followed this some time and most arguments against these changes
seemed (at least to me) to be rooted in avoiding work (e.g. as it would
be then necessary to improve the init-scripts and make them "fully"
configurable via their respective /etc/default/foo).

Anyway,.. there probably won't be any progress soon.
So why not just fix this in cryptsetup now, as it's easily possible and
can avoid potential security breaches.

Again, cryptsetup is special here, not only because of its
security-nature, but also as it "leaves" behind running stuff after
removal (the dm-crypt devices).
"Normal" daemons like postgresql/apache/etc. don't have this problem, as
they're typically stopped on removal.

Personally I don't share this view,... it should be possible for a end
user, if he already trusts Debian (which is obviously does), that he can
be given system as secure as possible, without knowing all the technical
details behind.

Because if this would be necessary, all users would have to read at
least the complete cryptsetup source-code, crypto kernel modules (and in
principle just everyting).

> Did I get you right that you suggest to start/stop/restart the

That would be a bad idea,.. and it would most likely not even work, as
those devices are in use.

> Is it appropriate to warn admins about unlocked devices when the

> would be ok with adding a warning to prerm if people mind about it.
While this is not a perfect solution,... it would allow us to conform to
Debian's strange handling of init-scripts while still doing everything
to at least inform the user about any possible security problems he may
encounter.
That's why I've suggested it before :)

Bug#626999: ITP: libhtml-microformats-perl -- parse microformats in HTML

  Version : 0.103
  Upstream Author : Toby Inkster
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/HTML-Microformats/

Description : parse microformats in HTML

The HTML::Microformats module is a wrapper for parser and handler
modules of various individual microformats (each of those modules has a
 name like HTML::Microformats::Format::Foo).
 .
The general pattern of usage is to create an HTML::Microformats object
(which corresponds to an HTML document) using the "new_document"
method; then ask for the data, as a Perl hashref, a JSON string, or an
 RDF::Trine model.

Ah, ok. So it may then simply be a missing initramfs rebuild request.

Bug#626983: ferror(): return no error when the stream is closed

2011-05-16 Thread Jonathan Nieder
reassign 626983 manpages-dev 3.27-1
# documentation
severity 626983 minor
retitle 626983 fclose.3: please clarify stream state after fclose
quit

Hi,

julien godin wrote:

> As described in the subject, the ferror() function return no error even if
> the stream as been previously closed

As the POSIX[1] documentation for fclose() says:

After the call to fclose(), any use of stream results in undefined
behavior.

Similarly, C99[2] says

The value of a pointer to a FILE object is indeterminate after the
associated file is closed.

which is earlier defined to mean

either an unspecified value or a trap representation

If you'd like that last behavior ("trap representation") in order to
catch bugs, valgrind can help.

I'm reassigning to manpages-dev in the hope that the system
documentation for ferror and fclose can be improved to clarify this.
I imagine help with wording would be very welcome.

Thanks for reporting,
Jonathan

After installing more packages and upgrades, some which - probably - rebuilt
the initramfs, I now have dvorak keyboard layout to enter my passphrase for my
encrypted drive.

So yes. keyboard layout definately is supported in initramfs :)

I did get quite a bit scared when the change happened though...

Bug#626998: xen-tools: Over-zealous response to --admins option

2011-05-16 Thread Nick Phillips
Package: xen-tools
Version: 4.2-1
Severity: normal

xt-create-xen-config (called from xen-create-image) either creates a user or
changes an existing user's shell,
and modifies /etc/sudoers, when the --admins option is given. It appears that
there is no longer any way to
"merely" add the required information (the admins config line) into the xen
config, which is I would expect
to be what most users would want. While the ability to create users/change
shells/add to sudoers may be "nice
to have", doing it by default when admins are specified certainly violates the
principle of least surprise.

At the very least, there should be an option to create the xen image and config
file without damag^Wmodifying
the rest of the system.

Cheers,

Nick

Is it still reproducible? TLS support is still to be improved in midori,
but in that case it's not midori fault but more libsoup anyway, so
please reassign if you still have the problem.

Yes, and some people even requested it.

Well, same thing happens in ls (and I guess other file managers). If
that really bother you you should talk to those editors developpers,
imho.

In the upstream bug Nick Schermer proposed to revert the change
(basically hiding in Thunar dotfiles plus some others). I don't think
they really want to add a configuration option for that, but you can
argue your way on that bug if it's important enough.

Bug#539266: timing issues with the LSI-Driver in relation to VMWare guests

2011-05-16 Thread Michael Schuh
Hi there,

MY observations related to this behaviour are:

I could see this message only in virtual machines (VMWare guests) installed
with debian/ubuntu.
Through the VMWare Forums i could find that there "should" be a gap in the
LSI-Drivers from linux.
Not sure if its true, i found my own workaround.

This warning/error messages from mpt-status comes around with entries in
/var/log/kern.log like:

kernel: [1659597.085565] mptscsih: ioc0: attempting task abort!
(sc=880115ba1000)
  kernel: [1659597.085575] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] CDB: Write(10): 2a 00 00 05 58
00 00 00 10 00
kernel: [1659597.085587] mptscsih: ioc0: task abort: SUCCESS
(sc=880115ba1000)

i figured for ME, that those issues comes only up if the disk load to the
storage on the underlying VMWare-System
( VMWareServer VMWareESX, VMWareESXI are tested by me for this case) is a
bit higher.
The Host containing Linux system moves the latency times for the disk access
a bit up and for the emulated LSI-Logic
it looks klike the disks have timing issues or are temporary disconnected
from the SCSI/SATA-Bus.

MY workaround to not run into such trouble:
#1 reconfigure the virtual machines with an BusLogic SCSI HBA
#2 convert the related virtual disks with vmware-vdiskmanager to BusLogic
Disks
#3 spread the load over different storages

to #3: if you have vm's that access through each other the same disk areas
on the same storage and interfering
e.g. a FTP-Server delivers per NFS/SMB files to another host laying on the
same storage and storing data from those
into the same storage area -> gotcha...2 systems fight against each
otheri think you got what i mean - concurrent access

Another hint ( if you can't spread the data over different storages but if
you are able to add more disks):
for heavy usage VMWare or any other virtualization system storage or
database storage
configure your systems with different disks for system and
VM-Storage(datastorage) and configure the storages as RAID10
( be aware not RAID 01!! ) and use as much disks as you can provide with
your controllers/budged. if its possible
spread the RAID10 ( the RAID1 part) over 2 different SCSI/Disk controllers
or SAN/NAS systems.
For the RAID10 setup and adding more disks just take a look at the well
known documentation or feel free to contact me.

just my 20ct.

regards

m.

I think that one is the trouble spot. Christoph doesn't agree with the
way, Debian manages initscripts. They're handled as conffiles by dpkg,
and for that reason aren't removed at 'apt-get remove', only if the
package is purged. For that reason, the situation that initscripts are
still around but the daemon/application they start/stop/whatever isn't,
is quite common. And it would be absurd if initscripts would exit wit $?
!= 0 in that case.

In case that this needs to be discussed, we should discuss the reasons
why initscripts are treated as conffiles in the first place, instead of
discussion symptoms of this decision.

I fully agree with Henrique here. My opinion is as simple as: If people
want do do something called serious, then they _really_ should know what
they're talking about. And if these people do remove a package from
their system, they should _not_ assume that it's functionality is still
provided.

Full ACK. Christoph, I guess that this is the argument I should have
used ealier.

Did I get you right that you suggest to start/stop/restart the
cryptdisks initscript in the debian maintainer scripts? Actually I don't
like that idea much. Most unlocked encrypted devices will be busy anyway
because being mounted while the system is running. And it's not the job
of debian maintainer scripts to unlock manually locked devices, or to
lock devices that are unlocked but not in use.

Appart from the general discussion about treatment of initscripts (see
above), I only see one point that's worth being discussed:

Is it appropriate to warn admins about unlocked devices when the
cryptsetup package is removed/purged? I still don't see the point, but
would be ok with adding a warning to prerm if people mind about it.

 jonas

Bug#626996: RFP: dis -- device interaction suite

2011-05-16 Thread Antoine Beaupré
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: dis
  Version : 0.98
  Upstream Author : Phillip Heller
* URL : http://dis.sourceforge.net/
* License : GPL-2
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : device interaction suite

This software provides object oriented API for dealings with devices
such as routers and switches. Additionally, these classes extend and
abstract the perl Expect module, and many of Expect's functions are
wrapped, or made otherwise available.

A design goal of DIS was to implement the ability for a user to
interactively login to a router with or without knowledge of the
Transport or Authentication mechanisms, or execute specific or script
actions, with our without logic both serially and parallel.

In support of this design goal, Dis.pm wraps around the Transport,
Authentication, and Connection classes to provide a simplified API to
the end-user. This API is intended to be utilized by the 'dis' script,
and other scripts which have a common need for similar command-line
argument processing and options.

Hi Francesco,

Thanks for your reply.

I've been using apt-listbugs with cupt on amd64 for a while, for what
it's worth.

apt-listbugs list worked okay for me when I tried it in the
course of investigation.

The bad news: before receiving your reply, I uninstalled apt-listbugs,
ran "cupt dist-upgrade", and reinstalled apt-listbugs, and now the
problem doesn't happen anymore. I think it must have had something to
do with the particular wheezy -> experimental upgrade that was being
proposed[1].

> I can try to reproduce the bug on a sid chroot (on amd64) with Cupt,

I doubt it is architecture-specific, unless there is some assumption
of signed char somewhere or something like that. This is an
interpreted language and it wasn't a segfault. :) To reproduce the
slow way (I don't encourage this --- it's just for illustration):

 1. unset MALLOC_PERTURB_, to avoid running afoul of Bug#626875.
 2. Follow the instructions from that bug log to get a wheezy
image. Or just grab Aurélien's squeeze image from
http://people.debian.org/~aurel32/qemu/armel/ and upgrade it.
 3. Install apt-listbugs and cupt.
 4. Put sid and experimental in sources.list. Put

APT::Default-Release "experimental";
cupt::worker::defer-triggers "1";

in a file in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/.
 5. Run "cupt update".
 6. Run "cupt full-upgrade".

> Anyway, I am afraid you'll have to wait some time, since I am quite
> busy in these days.
> Sorry... :-(

I don't mind; just thought the report might be useful to someone.
Sorry, I should have used btrfs and taken a snapshot before upgrading.
Next time.

http://ruby-doc.org/core/classes/String.html tells me:

| String objects may be created using String::new or as literals.
|
| Because of aliasing issues, users of strings should be aware of the
| methods that modify the contents of a String object. Typically,
| methods with names ending in ``!’’ modify their receiver, while those
| without a ``!’’ return a new String. However, there are exceptions,
| such as String#[]=.

I wonder if apt-listbugs/logic.rb, line 770 should not be

pkgnames[index] = pkgnames[index].chomp

and similarly for "if line != nil" on line 1169? Though that wouldn't
affect this bug.

pkgnames gets populated by adding entries of the form

filename = line.split(" ")[4]

after apt-listbugs sees a blank line. If there are 4 or fewer fields
on such a line then filename will be nil. Perhaps cupt mentioned a
package it was going to remove or trigger in a nonstandard way.

Is the apt VERSION 2 hook interface documented anywhere? I tried
"man apt" and "man apt.conf" but no luck so far.

Thanks for your thoughtfulness,
Jonathan

Bug#626995: docbook-xsl-ns: uses K&R as default for funcsynopsis with C or C++

2011-05-16 Thread brian m. carlson
Package: docbook-xsl-ns
Version: 1.76.0~RC1+dfsg-1
Severity: normal

When using a funcsynopsis with language="C" or language="C++", the
XSL-NS stylesheets default to a K&R representation of the function.
This is a bad default. Almost no new code is written in K&R-style and
ANSI-style is much, much more common. To my knowledge, C++ has never
allowed K&R-style declarations, and so to represent a C++ function in
that way is an error.

Also, DocBook has only existed since 1991, two years *after* the C89
ANSI standard took effect. The XSL-NS stylesheets are designed for
DocBook 5, which was created over *twenty-five years* after this
ratification. There is really no reason for DocBook to default to K&R.

I see this with FO output as well as XHTML output.

A test file that demonstrates this problem is available at
.

Bug#626979: [Pkg-haskell-maintainers] Bug#626979: haskell-platform requires older libghc-quickcheck2-dev than exists

Thanks for your report.

Last version of quickcheck was uploaded in order to fix a build issue on
some architectures. Probably the best thing is to make the
haskell-platform depend on quickcheck 2.4.1.1, but I'd like to hear
Joachim on this.

BTW, Joachim is away ATM and will be back in a week (although he could
have some sporadic Internet access), so we could have to wait a bit.

Giovanni.

Bug#626992: -c scans binary files as if they were html, after receiving 416 response

2011-05-16 Thread Jim Paris
Package: wget
Version: 1.12-3.1
Severity: normal

Hi,

While using "wget -c -r" on a directory of large binary files, I
noticed long delays after the "The file is already fully retrieved;
nothing to do." message.

It turns out this is because the server returned a 416 response with
Content-Type: text/html, and so Wget decides to scan the file for
links, as if it were HTML. But the file is not HTML -- just the 416
response body was.

Example:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget -c -d -r http://www.gnu.org/graphics/t-desktop-4-small.jpg

(The file is downloaded as expected, and not scanned for URLs)

$ wget -c -d -r http://www.gnu.org/graphics/t-desktop-4-small.jpg

(This time, notice in the debug output how the file was "Loaded" and
scanned for "no-follow" links. This is the source of the delay on
large binary files).

   ---response begin---
HTTP/1.1 416 Requested Range Not Satisfiable
   Date: Mon, 16 May 2011 21:34:24 GMT
   Server: Apache
   Vary: Accept-Encoding
   Connection: close
   Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1

   ---response end---
   416 Requested Range Not Satisfiable

The file is already fully retrieved; nothing to do.

   Closed fd 3
   Loaded www.gnu.org/graphics/t-desktop-4-small.jpg (size 30195).
   no-follow in www.gnu.org/graphics/t-desktop-4-small.jpg: 0
