Bug#641174: alsa-base: volume control not working - squeeze - GA-G41MT-ES2L - Intel C2D4500 - Realtek 887
Package: alsa-base Version: 1.0.23+dfsg-2 Severity: important Clicking on volume control shows this message: The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. Bug#641153: document Built-Using field for binary packages
On Sun, 11 Sep 2011, Charles Plessy wrote: This adds Built-Using in §5.6.10 (“Package interrelationship fields: Depends, Pre-Depends, Recommends, Suggests, Breaks, Conflicts, Provides, Replaces, Enhances”). In Policy's chapter 5, the fields in that list are documented to be present in source package control files (§5.2) and binary package control files (§5.3). However, dpkg-source does not allow the field in source package control files (allowed = ALL_PKG, see scripts/Dpkg/Control/Fields.pm). I don't understand your reasoning... Depends is also allowed = ALL_PKG which means allowed in control in the .deb, and in a package entry in debian/control (and in a Packages file and in /var/lib/dpkg/status). On the contrary, internally it's really very close to other dependency fields... it's treated like a union-dependency field (like Breaks/Conflicts). Since the only purpose of this paragraph is to allow to list pipe-separated alternatives, I propose to not add Built-Using to that paragraph, as in my undersanding it is not expected to list alternatives. It's not even allowed since it's a union-dependency field. Bug#641155: pu: package mdadm/3.1.4-1+8efb9d1+squeeze1
On 11.09.2011 02:09, Philipp Kern wrote: On Sun, Sep 11, 2011 at 01:09:35AM +0400, Michael Tokarev wrote: We'd like to upload a bugfix release of mdadm package for the next squeeze point release. There are mostly cosmetic changes, but some of the bugs are very annoying and already made quite some users unhappy - like the famous #598957, when mdadm monthly cron job generated useless email messages about i/o scheduling class for monthly array checks -- this bug alone prompted several NMU attempts already. See 4dbfa62f.1020...@debian.org ff. We require changes to be in unstable first. We really do. Understand. It was my biggest concern actually, I didn't think it is a good idea to go stright to stable without being in testing first, even with the trivial changes this set. So fix your package in unstable, let it be tested, and we'll look at it. So far all attempts have targetted stable only, which is the wrong approach. So, what's the right course of actions here? Yesterday we were about to upload a more recent upstream version to unstable, with all the fixes and alot more. Now, I'm not sure it is a good idea anymore, since that version will not go to squeeze obviously. So I have to upload this squeeze1 version to unstable, with one added ugly fix for ftbfs with gcc-4.6. Ugly because I don't want to apply a more intrusive patch in order to fix -Wunused-but-set-variable (which are all harmless) when targetting _stable_, instead I will have to remove -Werror from the upstream makefile and let it build on _testing_, -- just because I finally want it to appear in stable. And once accepted into stable with this ugly change, I'll immediately revert that -Werror change and upload new upstream into unstable. Is that the right approach? And what if we already had new upstream uploaded into unstable/testing? I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to understand the rigth way... ;) Thank you, /mjt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Unfortunately, dialog_color is used for both border and text of the dialog which makes theming rather impractical. hmm - it's always used the same color scheme for the text and upper/left borders, for simplicity. But I'm unclear on the relationship between the border colors and the distinction between warning/error messages. Are you displaying the different messages in different widgets? The relationship is simple. Since the warning and error messages are supposed to have different background they need a different text color too. And since the text color and border color are same the colors break. Of course, I can switch to flat borders the same color as text but that's way different from the default colors. Package: pmud Severity: normal If pmud and monit are both installed, the scripts in /etc/init.d conflict. This may be related to bug #590591? Likely not - but it would be helpful if you could post the message you get from dpkg if you attempt to install both packages. This stops the configuration and installation of other daemons (e.g. prevented update of cupsd) because the system reports a loop of depth 2 for pmud and depth 1 for monit. I assume this is a bug in pmud because it lacks LSB headers etc. (#590591) whereas monit does not but this assumption might (obviously) be mistaken. Removing pmud does not resolve the issue. Only purging allows e.g. upgrade of cupsd to proceed correctly. That's normal in such a case. config files are only removed on a purge. I have reassigned the bug to the monit package as their use of a file provided by pmud appears to be in error. Bug#641181: [linux-2.6] black screen shortly after starting boot
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 3.0.0-3 Severity: normal Hello, I freshly installed wheezy with kernel linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T400. During boot, after the message Waiting for /dev being fully populated is displayed, my screen turns first into flickery white lines in the upper third of my screen and then (I bet after switching to graphic mode) the screen is fully black. I tried several boot options like fb=false and/or vga= ... with several modes but this didn't helped. But my computer is running without screen because I can remotely log in using ssh. Luckily, I installed the ssh-server during installation. During the boot of the installation CD-ROM I had no problems. Now, strange thing: I was playing a bit around after remote log in and it turned out, that after installing the package firmware-linux-nonfree from the non-free section, booting now works fine. I.e., I see all boot messages, it switches to framebuffer mode and also switching to graphical mode at the end of the boot sequence works. Thus I can work with my laptop again. Btw., I verified by another fresh installation, that I only need the additional package firmware-linux-nonfree from non-free. Bug#640195: Remove paraview-dev
Lisandro, 2011/9/11 Lisandro Damián Nicanor Pérez Meyer perezme...@gmail.com: On Sáb 10 Sep 2011 17:32:30 Anton Gladky escribió: I propose to remove paraview-dev at all and include all files into the paraview-binary, like it was in previous versions of paraview. That sounds like a very bad decision. Header files should be provided by the -dev package. This allows a user to get only the binaries when she installs the foo package (foo being paraview in this case) and the header files only when necessary. If the header files are provided by the same package, it means that the buildd (or anyone wanting to B-D on paraview) must install a lot of unused stuff. Agree. That was the initial plan. We are 80% done with Anton's work. Just some minor cleanups remains. Now ParaViewConfig.cmake should be installed by paraview-dev. To help the transition, all the packages that currently build-depend on paraview should be filled a normal bug, raised to important in ~3 or 4 weeks and then to serious ~3 or 4 weeks later. It is customary to user-tag the bugs so as to follow the transition. Great. We'll keep this bug open as serious to prevent transition to testing. Is that an acceptable solution or should I fill a ROM request and re-upload paraview to experimental ? After that is achieved, src:paraview can be uploaded with the dev package providing the header files and ParaViewConfig.cmake. As said above, paraview is already in unstable. I need a little more time to test vtkedge and other package that build paraview plugins. Bug#639225: locales: Proposed Serbian, ijekavian flavour, cyrillic, locale for Bosnia and Herzegovina
Hi Christian, On Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 07:54:05AM +0200, Christian Perrier wrote: Package: locales Version: 2.13-16 Severity: normal Tags: patch The attached locale covers the Serbian language (ijekavian flavour) that is spoken in the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A variant is needed as Serbian as spoken and written in Bosnia and Herzegovina (essentially in the Republika Srpska entity) is significantly different from Serbian as spoken and written in Republic of Serbia (sr_RS locale). This locale is the result of a consensus reached between the Serbian translators of both Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to allow them to work on localization in both variants. Having this locale in Debian (and, I hope, in upstream glibc), will allow for translation files named s...@ijekavian.po to be used while sr.po files will be kept for the ekavian variant used in Serbia. Indeed, some KDE programs are already using that convention. This locale covers the cyrillic form of the language. Another locale, named sr_BA@ijekavianlatin will soon be proposed. The locale was written as a derived work of the sr_ME locale (Serbian in Montenegro) as the language used in sr_ME is indeed the ijekavian variant of Serbian. This looks like a good way to me to support this language. However given this is not a standard locale (based on ISO code), I think we should try to get this upstream (GNU libc) first. This way if upstream wants to use a different name, we won't have to do a transition later. This will also helps sharing translation between distributions. Do you want me to forward this new locale upstream, or do you prefer to do it? -- Aurelien Jarno GPG: 1024D/F1BCDB73 aurel...@aurel32.net http://www.aurel32.net -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#641188: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1: Philips 192E LCD Monitor does not switch back to textmode console mode
Package: libsvga1 Version: 1:1.4.3-27 Severity: normal File: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1 When I boot my computer, my Philips 192E LCD Monitor displays all console messages from the BIOS, the bootloader and Linux correctly before starting X-Windows. However, both on shutdown and on switching to a textmode virtual console (using Ctrl+Alt+F1) this monitor complains: 'Cannot display this video mode'. On reboot, the shutdown messages are not displayed, but the startup messages are displayed correctly. Switching the monitor's power off (either before or after the Ctrl+Alt+F1) and on again does not bypass this problem. This monitor uses a VGA cable for the connection with the computer. This is a problem as I require a textmode virtual console to safely upgrade from lenny to squeeze. I cannot find a telinit runlevel that starts my computer without starting X-Windows. I doubt that I can perform this upgrade after booting Debian into single user mode. This bug may be related to #125819: svgalib: doesn't switch back to framebuffer mode. However, the last activity on that bug was on 01 Dec 2002 21:13:50 +0100. If however the regular expression on line 173 of the same file gets bpo alongside pre, rc, git etc., it seems to resolve the issue (but I did not test it extensively to make sure it does not introduce new issues, nor have I any intimate knowledge of the bpo package naming scheme). From brief inspection of the grub-mkconfig_lib file, it seems that the same buggy logic is present in the unstable version of the package as well (the line numbers there are 218 and 206). Bug#640985: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Display flickers on HP EliteBook 2540p
David Syk fen...@gmail.com (09/09/2011): When running squeeze on HP EliteBook 2540p the built in display flickers bad. It seems that the backlit is turning off once or twice short (less then a second) every 3-10 seconds. The display does not present any other problems. (I guess it's not the usual upower bug, with flickering happening every 30 seconds or so. I think it only appeared with wheezy/sid and got fixed since then.) There is alot of drm and intel -related errors in the kernel log. When running a vanilla kernel (for example version 2.6.39-rc7) it seems to be workig correct. Problem appears on the integrated display both in the dock, and when the machine is undocked. The problem does not occur on displays attatched to external devices attatched to Display Port. For “recent” hardware, I'd suggest trying Xorg squeeze-backports[1], along with a Linux kernel coming from the same repository. I guess it's a better mid-term solution than dealing with your vanilla kernel on your own. 1. http://x.debian.net/reference/squeeze-backports.html Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#641197: libxft2: Include Ubuntu LCD filter patch
Package: libxft2 Version: 2.2.0-3 Severity: wishlist Dear Maintainer, xft does not utilise the lcdfilter option. An example is when using Openbox and GTK2 based apps with the following configuration in ~/fonts.conf. match target=font edit mode=assign name=lcdfilter constlcddefault/const /edit /match The result is that the fonts rendered by Openbox look slightly different to those rendered by GTK2. I researched and found that Ubuntu had added a patch in the following version that utilises lcdfilter: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xft/xft_2.1.14-2ubuntu1.diff.gz I tested the patch on 2.2.0-3 and it has worked well and my Window Manager fonts now look the same as GTK2. Bug#641181: [linux-2.6] black screen shortly after starting boot
On Sun, 2011-09-11 at 10:08 +0200, Ralf Denzer wrote: Package: linux-2.6 Version: 3.0.0-3 Severity: normal Hello, I freshly installed wheezy with kernel linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T400. The correct option for disabling Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) would be 'nomodeset'. [...] Radeon graphics chips seem to have become more and more dependent on GPU firmware. The driver will run without firmware available, and this works with older cards where firmware was only needed for 3D acceleration, but apparently this is not true for newer chips. Perhaps the driver should abort initialisation when firmware is not available for one of these. Bug#641188: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1: Philips 192E LCD Monitor does not switch back to textmode console mode
Hi! On Sun, 2011-09-11 at 12:38:16 +0200, Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco] wrote: Package: libsvga1 Version: 1:1.4.3-27 Severity: normal File: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1 When I boot my computer, my Philips 192E LCD Monitor displays all console messages from the BIOS, the bootloader and Linux correctly before starting X-Windows. Please correct me if I have entered this report against the wrong package. Bug#641181: [linux-2.6] black screen shortly after starting boot
Dear Ben, to graphic mode) the screen is fully black. I tried several boot options like fb=false and/or vga= ... with several modes but this didn't helped. The correct option for disabling Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) would be 'nomodeset'. I didn't know that! Thanks. Btw., I verified by another fresh installation, that I only need the additional package firmware-linux-nonfree from non-free. Thanks for the explanation. I didn't had these problems with my previous installed kernel 2.6.32-5 from stable. Sorry, I forgot to mentioned that in my first message ... It is something allowed depending on the alignment of the string and as long as a page is not crossed. Unfortunately valgrind is not able to cope with that and issue this error. Bug#641206: Acknowledgement (apache2: Implement init.d's stop and restart using graceful stop)
I just saw that graceful-stop is already available in /etc/init.d/apache2 in debian/squeeze. So I amend my wishlist: The standard stop command should implement graceful-stop. If somebody has the need for the original apache stop, then this could be implemented with a new init.d command force-stop or so. Bug#641208: dh-make-perl: enhance copyright file handling by integrating an enhanced Debian::Copyright
Package: dh-make-perl Version: 0.73-1 Severity: wishlist The idea is to protect dh-make-perl from DEP-5 changes and to also make 'dh-make-perl refresh' respect more existing content of a debian/copyright file. Specifically the new steps would be: 1.) Attempt to read the existing debian/copyright file into a Debian::Copyright object. 2.) If 1. failed gather the data as one would at the moment and create a Debian::Copyright object from that. 3.) Update the 'debian/*' stanza in the Debian::Copyright object. 4.) Refresh the common licenses in the Debian::Copyright object 5.) Rename any fields that have been changed according to the current DEP-5 standard. 6.) Write out the new debian/copyright file. Other comments: a.) The main affect of the proposal would be that the manual bits of a debian/copyright file would not get overwritten. Are there any downsides to this? b.) Debian::Copyright was modelled explicitly on Debian::Control. It would need more work for all this to be doable however. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages dh-make-perl depends on: ii debhelper 8.9.6 helper programs for debian/rules ii dpkg-dev 1.16.0.3 Debian package development tools ii fakeroot 1.18-1 tool for simulating superuser priv ii libapt-pkg-perl 0.1.24+b2 Perl interface to libapt-pkg ii libarray-unique-perl 0.08-1 Tie-able array that allows only un ii libclass-accessor-perl0.34-1 Perl module that automatically gen ii libcpan-meta-perl 2.112150-1 Perl module to access distribution ii libdpkg-perl 1.16.0.3 Dpkg perl modules ii libemail-address-perl 1.892-1Perl module for RFC 2822 address p ii libemail-date-format-perl 1.002-1Module to generate RFC-2822-valid ii liblist-moreutils-perl0.33-1 Perl module with additional list f ii libmodule-corelist-perl 2.55-1 module to determine modules shippe ii libmodule-depends-perl0.15-2 Perl module to identify the depend ii libparse-debcontrol-perl 2.005-2Easy OO parsing of Debian control- ii libparse-debianchangelog-perl 1.2.0-1parse Debian changelogs and output ii libsoftware-license-perl 0.103002-1 module providing templated softwar ii libtie-ixhash-perl1.21-2 ordered associative arrays for Per ii libwww-mechanize-perl 1.70-1 module to automate interaction wit ii libyaml-perl 0.73-1 YAML Ain't Markup Language ii make 3.81-8.1 An utility for Directing compilati ii perl 5.12.4-4 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii perl-modules [libmodule-corel 5.12.4-4 Core Perl modules Versions of packages dh-make-perl recommends: ii apt-file 2.5.0 search for files within Debian pac ii git1:1.7.2.3-2.2 fast, scalable, distributed revisi dh-make-perl suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Depends is also allowed = ALL_PKG which means allowed in control in the .deb, and in a package entry in debian/control (and in a Packages file and in /var/lib/dpkg/status). My point is that if the Built-Using field is not to be used elsewhere than in binary control files, I propose, if and only if this is consensual, to submit an amended patch that makes this clear in the Policy. [And about how I made a wrong statement about dpkg's internals in my previous email: I quickly took Installed-Size as an exemple of field that is not found in source control files to reverse-engeneer what ALL_PKG means, saw that it is allowed = ALL_PKG ~CTRL_INFO_PKG and that the field above, Homepage is allowed = ALL_SRC | ALL_PKG, and wrongly concluded that ALL_SRC meant source and ALL_PKG meant binary. I hope that the rest of my answer to Ansgar is more useful, and also welcome feedback about it. Sorry for the noise.] Have a nice day, -- Charles Plessy Tsurumi, Kanagawa, Japan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? So this is commented out, did you pass -ignoreABI on the command line? Yes I did. Try downgrading this for now: $ apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=2:1.10.4-1 See http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=165665 Hope that helps, ok, it does. -- Mvh Anders Lagerås signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
