Bug#654924: Latest efforts on TigerVNC (was Re: Bug#654924: Inclusion of TigerVNC sources)

2012-04-09 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi Joachim, hi all,

Yesterday I played with several things that are still a showstopper
for upload to Debian...

1. Name of the tarballs...

After doing some reading on multiple tarballs, I adapted the tarball
names spit out by debian/rules get-orig-source. These still have to be
imported on top of the former orig tarballs. They probably should be
imported in a branch called ,,upstream'' (not into to separate
branches).

2. source/format -> 3.0 (quilt)

I tried switching to source format 3.0 (quilt) which fails to work.
There is something odd with dpkg-source -b, the patches and the source
format. dpkg-source tries to apply patches twice and fails the second
time. Not sure why. I first thought that this was due to the CDBS
packaging (I lack experience with that), so I tested the whole thing
with a minmal debhelper debian/rules file. However, this also failed
with 3.0 (quilt) source format.

3. copyright file

The copyright converge against becoming complete...

4. shipped libraries: zlib, libfltk

I have removed the zlib library in tigervnc/common/zlib from the
source tree as CMake successfully builds+links against the system's
zlib if the folder is missing. Something similar should be achieved
for libfltk. The latter also is in Debian, so we should try to
build+link against that one (in sid, there actually are two version of
libfltk -> libfltk1.1 and libfltk1.3).

I guess all other directories / libraries in tigervnc/common are part
of vnc and have to stay there.

@Joachim: maybe you could take a look at this and see what is
hindering the CMake files to build against the system's libfltk1.3?

5. One cannot build packages twice from the same working copy

An issue we also have to address is this: one cannot clone the source
tree from Git and run debuild on that one more than once.

6. Using packaging mailing list for tigervnc?

I guess we should not overload BTS with these kinds of mails. I have
created this list on Alioth for further discussions on TigerVNC
packaging:

pkg-tigervnc-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org

The list will be available in a couple of hours, please everyone get
subscribed to it if interested.

Greets,
Mike

Out of 4 tries on kfreebsd-amd64 for this version, it failed 3 times on
3 different tests, and succeeded on the fourth build. Not sure I
understand this particular one, but I think it's more likely to be an
unreliable test than a new bug.

Bug#668240: guitarix: FTBFS(kfreebsd-i386): hangs during waf build

2012-04-09 Thread Steven Chamberlain
Package: src:guitarix
Version: 0.22beta2-1
Severity: serious
Tags: sid wheezy
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: kfreebsd
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Justification: fails to build from source (but built successfully in the
past)

Hi,

Builds of guitarix have been seen to hang for kfreebsd-i386, and I've
been able to reproduce this on my own system.

This happens immediately after:

> [154/304] cxx: build/default/libgxwmm/gxwmm/simplevaluedisplay.cc ->
> build/default/libgxwmm/gxwmm/simplevaluedisplay_80.o

> [156/304] cxx: build/default/libgxwmm/gxwmm/wrap_init.cc ->
> build/default/libgxwmm/gxwmm/wrap_init_80.o

I think the hung task is python2.7 (running the waf build system):

> make(76717)───python2.7(76718)─┬─python2.7(77035)
>└─python2.7(77015)

The same issue also happened when building 0.21.0-1, but a second
attempt was successful. So this issue has existed at least since then,
and seems to happen only sometimes.

This issue has not been seen yet on kfreebsd-amd64.

Why would you do that, rather than just let sshd set KRB5CCNAME to the
appropriate value, which it will do automatically? KRB5CCNAME should
generally always point to a randomly-named ticket cache as long as files
in /tmp are used, since otherwise you raise the possibility of DoS attacks
and other annoyances due to known-file-name attacks in /tmp.

KRB5CCNAME is a system-local setting. It doesn't make sense to forward it
from one system to another. The remote system could be using something
completely different to store the ticket cache, like KCM or kernel keyring
caches.

I would love to have a public statement from Matthias on the subject. I
think it would be very helpful. However, as stated in the constitution,
Debian cannot require anyone to do work. That includes making public
statements where they don't want to. Matthias has no obligation to do
anything that he doesn't want to; Debian is a volunteer project. (Of
course, when determining a question like this where communication is a big
part of the matter in question, it is relevant to the decision whether or
not people have or can make the time and effort -- which in contentious
issues I realize can be substantial -- to reply to issues related to the
maintenance of the Python packages.)

I believe that's been attempted several times over the long history of
this bug. I certainly intend to invite him to reply once we have an idea
of what the ballot might be, since I would like to know what he thinks
before voting.

Thank you very much for testing this in advance.

The uvcvideo driver used for this webcam is *identical* in Debian
versions 2.6.38-5 and 2.6.39-rc4 (except for comments). So this
regression was presumably caused by a change in some more general code,
probably in V4L2 (support for cameras and video capture).

It's also possible that the problem could be on the display side, since
video is usually displayed differently from other graphics. Are you
able to play video files successfully? Can mplayer show the webcam
video properly if you use the option '-vo x11'?

Ben.

Bug#668239: host key handling broken when port!=22

2012-04-09 Thread Alexander Zangerl
Package: python-paramiko
Version: 1.7.7.1-2
Severity: important
Tags: upstream patch

in lines 307-310 in client.py, the hostname is rewritten
to "[origname]:portnumber" if the port isn't 22.

this serves no useful purpose at all, and it breaks
the lookup for the host key that is attempted on the next few
lines: that now fails as the ssh known hosts format allows
hostnames or ip addresses, nothing else (and certainly
not '[hostname]:port').
result: you get a "unknown server" exception (unless you enable the
only-warn missing host key policy).

the attached patch removes the problematic hostname rewriting.

regards

Bug#668219: ITP: otf -- Open Trace Format support library

OTF is an established acronym for OpenType Fonts. Emacs depends on
libotf0.

I guess the question is, do you think someone wanting to use the
existing libotf-dev might also want to use Open Trace Format's dev
package? It's unfortunate that Open Trace Format uses the phrase OTF.
Would they consider renaming?

confirming this. g++ used to ignore the -Wl option without further
arguments, and now terminates with an error. patched for the moment,
upstream is notified.

i've uploaded an 1.3.2-3 version to mentors[1]; it also includes a fix
for #658551 and multiarch support. as i've kicked myself out of DMUA
with my last upload, i'll need sponsoring again.

Actually, sorry for my confusion, but it looks like batman-adv is now
part of the kernel itself and we just need to backport the batctl
utility.

I am looking at doing the backport as we speak, if there is no
opposition here i will proceed with uploading (and therefore
maintaining) such a backport.

Bug#668237: batman-adv out of date in Debian

2012-04-09 Thread Antoine Beaupré
Package: batman-adv-source
Version: 2011.1.0-1
Severity: wishlist

http://www.open-mesh.org/wiki/open-mesh/2012-02-05-batman-adv-2012-0-0-release

Some empirical evidence show that this is not really interoperable
with the version in testing, let alone the one in squeeze, therefore
an update is quite important.

Bug#667799: [3.0 -> 3.2.13 regression] Radeon KMS fails on Radeon X850XT (R480) graphics card

If you get a chance to try it, please report the result to the
upstream bugtracker. This information can be used to help decide
whether and how quickly to apply the patch to mainline and the stable
trees.

I have done basic testing. Pulling a kernel source tree for 3.3.y and
applying the patch results in a new kernel which now boots successfully.

Currently running kernel is :-

$ uname -a
Linux mordor 3.3.1+ #5 SMP Tue Apr 10 01:53:45 BST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Which is working I've not tested this tree without the patch yes, so
can't be 100% certain, but that patch is looking pretty convincing so far.

Bug#665004: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: scrolling stopped working after upgrade 1.5.0 --> 1.5.99

2012-04-09 Thread Facundo Gaich
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 1.5.99.901-1
Followup-For: Bug #665004

Also affects my ASUS 1015PE. Two-finger-tapping and three-finger-tapping
are still working though. Apparently, scrolling is now only working if you
do a fast swipe, as opposed to the previous version behaviour where
doing precision scrolling by moving the fingers a few milimiters worked.

Do you know whether this bug is present with libtiff4 3.9.4-5+squeeze3
or with 3.9.6-1? If so, I'd like to temporarily downgrade this bug to
allow the fix to CVE-2012-1173 to transition to testing.

Bug#667960: [PATCH] combine: let "xor" read a file only once. This is required to correctly work when reading from pipes. Closes: #667960

2012-04-09 Thread Carsten Hey
I noticed that moreutils includes isutf8. The same, but with
a different interface, can be archived with "iconv -f UTF8 >/dev/null
filename".

Currently "combine file1 and file2 _" is valid syntax, as is "_ file1
and file2". If you ever plan to add options, I think this must change
in some way, at least if an option is passed. Otherwise combine can't
know if "_ -z or xor _" should process the files "-z" and "xor", or the
files "or" and "_".

Useful options are in my opinion -u (unique - if one pipes combine's
output through sort -u anyway one could also use comm instead), -z (zero
terminated entries) and -n (to print the line number instead of the
lines itself - this would solve all those "please reimplement join"
feature requests, but an exhaustive explanation would be too long for
now). An argument against adding -u is that the perl one-liner perl -ne
'print unless $seen{$_}++' archives the same.

All testing that has been done for the attached C implementation is
comparing the output of all for operations on the two test files
I created with the output of the combine shipped in moreutils, so it is
likely to contain bugs. For now I agree that the perl variant from my
former mail is the best option mentioned in this bug.

It reads the files into an array of C-strings. The "hash table" is
built by qsort()ing it and the lookup is done by using bsearch(). If
both, the lines in the original order and the sorted lines are needed,
the array with pointers to char needs to be copied and sorted, which is
quite cheap.

Without a more complex data structure, xor needs to read both files into
memory. All that is needed for such more complex data structures (which
are also needed for implementing some possible options and for
supporting embedded '\0' characters) is to additionally store some
integers for each entry, for example to store the entries length or to
mark an entry as seen.

With the same arguments I used to measure the memory usage of the
different perl variants it uses 22832 kbytes of memory, despite reading
both files into memory. The perl implementations needed at least 36576
kbytes.

I think preserving the on/off state of the service is a good idea, but I
also think it's premature to try to specify this in policy; AFAIK there's
currently no implementation for either upstart or systemd that does this.

There are really two subquestions here:

 - When a package adds support for other init systems, how does it ensure
that the override status for the service is applied to all init systems?

 - How should an admin disable a service to make sure it's disabled for all
   init systems?

I think the answer to the second is definitely not 'update-rc.d disable'.

Bug#668235: golang-go: 'go' command build failure: runtime.morestack not defined

2012-04-09 Thread Wouter Van Hemel
Package: golang-go
Version: 2:1-2
Severity: normal

Hello,

After updating to Go1 currently in Debian unstable, I can't seem to build
anything with the "go " command. If I call 8g/8l manually, I get
a working binary though.

The problem occurs when 'go' tries to link my test program with something
called "command-line-arguments" (which it doesn't seem to do when calling the
compiler and linker manually):

$ go build -v -x helloworld.go
[...]
/usr/lib/go/pkg/tool/linux_386/8l -o helloworld -L $WORK
$WORK/command-line-arguments.a
# command-line-arguments
runtime.morestack not defined

I unset GOROOT and GOPATH is set to an empty, writeable directory:

declare -x GOPATH="/home/wouter/Code/Go/GoInstall"

I'm running the latest Go from Debian unstable on a ThinkPad Pentium/M:

Linux debian 2.6.38-2-686 #1 SMP Sun May 8 14:49:45 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

I think answering that is out of scope for this policy bug. It's obvious to
me that the requests *must* be mapped to the native interface, and the
implementation details of how that mapping is done are not interesting from
a policy perspective.

invoke-rc.d is an interface for maintainer scripts. I don't see any reason
for a maintainer script to ever call custom actions, or for this to be
specified in policy if they do.

invoke-rc.d itself spits out a warning if you pass it a custom action. So I
don't think this is something we should be worrying about.

> If invoke-rc.d intercepts and redirects the request to upstart (or
> systemd), should update-rc.d do the same?

No. The update-rc.d policy interface is for managing a service's runlevel
configuration. Those symlinks still need to be managed, regardless of
whether you're running upstart, to preserve compatibility if you reboot back
to sysvinit; and there is no corresponding action to be taken for upstart
because upstart scripts' runlevel declarations are part of the job
definition itself.

> Say you run "update-rc.d disable", should this disable only
> the sysv init script, both, or only the upstart/systemd service?

'update-rc.d disable' is not a policy interface. I think this is out of
scope for this bug.

But to answer the question, no, I don't think 'update-rc.d' is a sensible
tool to have as an admin-oriented, init-system-agnostic interface for
disabling services. 'service disable' would be much better.

This has been fixed upstream with the inclusion of the latest release

Your patch is funny, in the first part you remove double spaces after
full stops (XXX. YYY -> XXX, YYY), in the later part of your patch
you are *introducing* double spaces where they aren't?!?!

I tried to extract the useful parts, but gave up after some point.
If you really want to do that again, please get the current xdvi.1.in

CLABBY (adj.)
A 'clabby' conversation is one stuck up by a commissionaire or
cleaning lady in order to avoid any further actual work. The opening
gambit is usually designed to provoke the maximum confusion, and
therefore the longest possible clabby conversation. It is vitally
important to learn the correct, or 'clixby' (q.v.), responses to a
clabby gambit, and not to get trapped by a 'ditherington' (q.v.). For
instance, if confronted with a clabby gambit such as 'Oh, mr Smith, I
didn't know you'd had your leg off', the ditherington response is 'I
haven't' whereas the clixby is 'good.'

Yes, we have been having this problem since before 2.6.32-34 and were
very hopeful that change would fix it. This sadly was not the case.
Unfortunately there isn't anything in the logs for this, but I have a

Thanks.

Googling around for issues with sync_super threw up

is fair enough since that is the version currently in stable). Could you
try the kernel from stable-proposed-updates (now 2.6.32-43)?

Also referenced was https://lkml.org/lkml/2010/9/1/178 which supports

When reviewing our logs across multiple crashes affecting multiple
physical servers I note that 1 process is umounting the snapshot while
another process takes a new snapshot as the last log entry on the server
before the oops.

It will take us a few days (probably a week) or so to get this new
kernel rolled out, but will post an update here on how that has changed
things once I know more.

If there's any chance of setting up a serial console to catch this issue
should it happen again then that would be very useful too.

Will also be looking into the possibility of setting this up, as it has
been happening fairly frequently for us.

Thanks for your help so far. :-)

So the invoke-rc.d code diverts all requests to systemd iff systemd is
running? That seems like it should work ok for upgrades, yes, as in that
case any service started after systemd is booted will already be a systemd
unit.

Where does this invoke-rc.d code live, though? I don't see it in the
sysvinit-provided invoke-rc.d implementation, and I don't see a separate
invoke-rc.d implementation shipped by any of the systemd binary packages.

You didn't actually answer the question I posed here. How should
invoke-rc.d handle the exit code of /etc/init.d/foo to make this not suck in
the corner cases?

If you don't have an answer for how to make this reliable, I don't think
this aesthetic preference counts for much.

Bug#661465: openjdk-7-jre: Dependency madness

2012-04-09 Thread Christoph Anton Mitterer

Hi.

CCing to the OpenJDK Team in the hope that we can get some clearer
answers.

I guess the cards lay on the table... as it was pointed out -headless
is just not enough for many people, e.g. they want to have a JDK
installed.
While IMHO it's ok to pull in simple and small base libs like glib, the
recent dependency additions pull in more or less large parts of GNOMEs
core stuff, weirdly lots of long deprecated things like bonobo.

So can you please give some enlightenment why hard dependencies are
required?

As pointed out by some people in the chat, the functionality might be
dynamically loaded when the respective libs are there.
But even then I'd vote against recommends, because this would then pull
in all the stuff with APTs default config anyway.

Having this issue laying around is rather problematic for some of
us at least I haven't upgraded so far, because I don't want to
clutter server installations with all the GNOME stuff,... but this is
problematic not only for matters of security updates.

Cheers,
Chris.

Bug#655745: freshly installed dosemu (no customization) crashes on start up with Bus Error

2012-04-09 Thread J G Miller
===

Sorry, this was my fault.

I have subsequently discovered that I had an outdated zlib installation
v1.2.5 in /usr/local (used for an application compiled and installed in
/usr/local), and it was the presence of this which was causing
dosemu to crash with the bus error.

Removal of that library from /usr/local cured the problem and therefore
this bug should be closed.

Apologies once again for the false alarm.

Hello,

I intent to NMU this package to improve some parts of the packaging. This is
part of a wider initiative to document and improve the use of the packaging
tools provided by maven-repo-helper.

This upload simplifies debian/rules by using the jh_maven_repo_helper DH 7
plugin provided by maven-repo-helper. This plugin installs the jar and Maven
metadata in /usr/share/maven-repo.

Full changelog:

mockito (1.9.0+ds1-1.1) unstable; urgency=low

Here's a ping, and a rebased patch. The Debian policy bug is not finalized,
but is converging on consensus, so I think this is a good time to start
introducing some working code.

I was going to start with the sysvinit package first, but since
sysvinit-utils will itself install an upstart job, it needs dh_installinit
to DTRT first and avoid adding a dependency on upstart-job to this core
package. So it looks like debhelper should be done first.

Thanks,

Bug#668232: yate: FTBFS: skips upstream installation step

2012-04-09 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Source: yate
Version: 4.0.0-1~dfsg-1
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source (but built successfully in the past)

At least on the autobuilders, builds of yate have been skipping the
upstream installation step and failing as a result:

  [...]
  touch build-indep-stamp
   fakeroot debian/rules binary-arch

I'd recommend converting more fully to dh, but adding an explicit
install target would probably work as a quick fix:

install:
dh install

Could you please look into it?

Thanks!

Bug#668229: duplicity: sftp backups to nonstandard ports no longer supported

2012-04-09 Thread Zed Pobre
Package: duplicity
Version: 0.6.18-1
Severity: important

After the change to use paramiko for sftp connections, there appears
to be no way to tell Duplicity to connect to a nonstandard SSH port.
This has broken my backups.

Old style of call:

duplicity collection-status sftp://backup@zp/duplicity/moebius/@etc
--archive-dir /var/cache/duplicity/moebius --name @etc --verbosity 1
--no-print-statistics --ssh-options '-oPort=3
-oIdentityFile=/root/.ssh/id_rsa-backup'

now results in:

** (process:4135): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GMountMountFlags' as
flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'

** (process:4135): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GDriveStartFlags' as
flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'

** (process:4135): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GSocketMsgFlags' as
flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'
BackendException: ssh connection to zp:22 failed: Private key file is encrypted

(I expect the gtype warnings are unrelated, but I'm including them
because they're also new to my recent upgrade of a number of packages
to testing.)

The "Private key file is encrypted" is a little nonsensical here --
the failure has nothing to do with the private key file (which has no
password), but that user backup isn't allowed to connect to port 22
(there's a DenyUsers on the main sshd_config), and Duplicity is now
ignoring -oPort=3.

If I attempt to modify the URL to use user@host:port format, Duplicity
fails to look up the host:

duplicity collection-status sftp://backup@zp:3/duplicity/moebius/@etc
--archive-dir /var/cache/duplicity/moebius --name @etc --verbosity 1
--no-print-statistics --ssh-options '-oPort=3
-oIdentityFile=/root/.ssh/id_rsa-backup'

flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'

** (process:4503): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GSocketMsgFlags' as
flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'
BackendException: ssh connection to zp:3 failed: Unknown server [zp]:3

Unfortunately, reverting is no longer an option, since Python 2.7 is
required by too many other core packages that were upgraded to Testing
(this started because I needed a more recent dpkg-dev, and everything
else got dragged along with it.)

This is... really unpleasant. I'm actually not sure how to get
backups working again without completely switching protocols and
coming up with a new security plan (the alternate SSH daemon forces a
chroot, so loss of a key can't do much damage to the system).

This could be solved either by having -oPort being honored in addition
to -oIdentityFile, or by fixing the Unknown server error when a port
is specified, but I don't really know where to start looking to fix
either place.

I can't provide the full upgrade log as I didn't save it. I do have the
aptitude and dpkg logs if those are useful (attached)

Please note that I did two upgrades, the first one started at 17:17 broke
because of libreoffice's postinstall script and the second one, at 17:29, did
go ahead fine (and upgraded the system).

I just did an upgrade of the system as I'm having some issues after the
GNOME 3 upgrade (last week) and wanted to see if an upgrade fixes them (it
doesn't) and use xfce in the meantime. I also encountered some strange issue
with libreoffice and GNOME (a libreoffice process would be spawned whenever I
opened up some applications) and wanted to see if this was fixed (it seems to
be now).

I didn't really check when was the upgrade of the last libreoffice version,
but I don't mind help testing it out and weeding some bugs, after all, that
is what sid is for :)

Javier

I've added a new command line option to convert LDraw files, if you run
something like "leocad --convert /home/david/ldraw/parts/
/home/david/leocad/" it will convert all LDraw parts from the first
directory and save a new LeoCAD library in the second directory.

You can get the source from either svn
http://svn.leocad.org/tags/leocad-0.76.2/ or leocad-0.76.2-src.tgz from
http://code.google.com/p/leocad

Let me know if you run into any problems.

Bug#668227: links2: security bugs in links

2012-04-09 Thread Mikulas Patocka
Package: links2
Version: 2.3~pre1-1
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

I discovered some out of memory accesses in links2 graphics mode that could be
potentially used to run exploits. I fixed them in links-2.6. For Debian
Squeeze, I am sending this patch that backports the fixes to links-2.3pre1.
Apply the patch and distribute patched packages links and links2 through
security.debian.org.

This patch fixes:

Buffer overflow when pasting too long text from clipboard to dialog boxes
(not remotely exploitable)
A write out of allocated memory in the graphics rendeder (potentionally
exploitable)
An infinite loop when parsing invalid usemap specification in text and
graphics mode (can cause browser lockup, but not otherwise exploitable)
Accesses out of memory in the xbm decoder (potentionally exploitable)

Bug#668226: gettext: Support the new style Python format strings

2012-04-09 Thread Rodrigo Silva (MestreLion)
Package: gettext
Version: 0.18.1.1-1ubuntu2
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

I've stumbled on this issue recently, and while searching if this was
already reported somewhere, I've found upstream bug #30854 in Savannah. Looks
like it wasn't forwarded to neither the old nor the new bug mailing list,
so I'll do it now, make his words mine, and add a few comments on my own:

Mon 23 Aug 2010 05:10:05 PM GMT, original submission by David Planella
https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?30854
---
Currently the gettext tools support only the old Python string format for
substitutions, that is, %s or %(variable)s type strings.

Python standards PEP 0292 [1] and PEP 3101 [2] recommend the use of $foo
and {foo} strings. More and more Python applications migrate to this new
syntax, and it would make sense for the gettext tools to support it.

The ones I can think, off the top of my head:

xgettext to extract {foo} and $foo strings from Python files and mark
them as python-format in the .pot templates
msgmerge -c to validate those

[1] http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0292/
[2] http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-3101/
-

I think he means msgfmt -c, since AFAIK there's no msgmerge -c

A few remarks on my own:

The 3 formats currently co-exist in Python 2:
  %(foo)s is used by the % operator, as in "%(foo)s" % {'foo':bar}
{foo} is used by the str.format() method and format() builtin,
  as in "{foo}".format(foo=bar) or format("{foo}",foo=bar)
$foois used by the Template class, as in "$foo".Template(foo=bar)

The % format is deprecated in Python 3, and, while still widely used in
Python 2, its usage for new code is discouraged. format() is the new
standard. See http://docs.python.org/library/stdtypes.html#str.format

That said, I urge gettext to support at least the new format() syntax. If
it's not possible to support 3 different syntax rules simultaneously, at
least give Python users a way to choose one of the sets, using xgettext's
--flag for example

Good advice.

Bad advice - it would prevent it getting through NEW. See:

 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=582884#77

If it created bootable LiveCDs and installer-CDs, "cd-creator" would
be a poor but tolerable name and "bootcd-creator" would be fine. But
even "bootusb-creator" would still be a terrible name for this
package, because there's no such thing as a bootable USB (or "a USB"
in general), and because the software also works on non-USB media.

Bug#660941: Fwd: gpsprune: set Debian default paths for tools used by GpsPrune

2012-04-09 Thread Christoph Anton Mitterer
Hi.

a) I think it would be better to have full pathnames.

b) In my case the fields are really empty.
I tried a bit and it seems they get auto-detected once you have
a .pruneconfig file, even if that is partially empty.
But as this file is only created when the user manually chooses to do so
in the program, I'd still vote to patch the sources to include the
debian standard paths for the programs.

Cheers,
Chris.

Thank you for reporting this bug. It is fixed in the 0.12.6 version of

anymore.

The new package should be uploaded as part of the libpng transition

Drupal6 and Drupal7 are different enough for upgrades to be a real
PITA - Drupal6 is still maintained upstream (for security updates
only).

I know that having extra versions is a burden, and I understand that
Drupal6 can and probably should be removed. Migration will be a
challenge for many users, though. Given the responsiveness track of
the Drupal developers, I'd request leaving Druapl6 in - But take it as
a "light" request only, just answering to the "is there a reason..?"
part.

Well there is no hard guarantees but at least that's the idea behind.

Well you're right, but the reality is still that people do this.
clamav is just one example where the security relevance get's obvious.

But then I don't see why you change the "long-standing behaviour" that
it always runs.
Especially when it's quite obvious that it can easily happen that some
people will more or less always work on battery and recharge when
powered off.

Also I think using a default that is at least more safe is the better
way.

When you provide a debconf question you'll even hit the end-users an can
ask them what they want and notice the possible (security) implications.

Chris.

I had similar problems with packagekitd [1] reported and fixed in
#658293 [1]. I was told my D-Bus setup is messed up. But I was not told
what might be wrong and still programs should not crash because of that.
I am very interested how my D-Bus setup is wrong and how I can remedy
that. In the meanwhile it would be great if colord could be fixed.

Thanks,

Paul

Bug#664765: RFS: ember-media/0.6.2.1-1 [ITA]

Hi,

"Stephen M. Webb" writes:
> dget -x
> http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/e/ember-media/ember-media_0.6.2.1-1.dsc

I haven't had time for a proper review, but here are some first
comments:

 - typo in the package description: "media data user at runtime" should
be "media data *used* at runtime".
 - The WF packages currently use three different forms to refer to WF:
"Worldforge", "WorldForge" and "World Forge". Please decide on one of
   them.
 - I prefer if the short description would tell more about the package,
not only that it is related to ember. Maybe "3D client of the
WorldForge project -- media files" or something along that lines?
 - The package creates links to fonts shipped in other packages, but
   does not depend on them.
 - debian/copyright should use "GPL-2+ or GFDL-NIV-1.1+" for
dual-licensed files and have two license paragraphs (one for GPL-2+
   and one GFDL-NIV-1.1+).

Regards,
Ansgar

Bug#668224: inaccurate arcs

2012-04-09 Thread Zefram
Package: inkscape
Version: 0.47.0-2+b1
Severity: important

When rendering SVG items that contain Arc commands, inkscape
screws up the geometry. Simple test case:

http://www.w3.org/2000/svg";>

This attempts to render a unit circle twice. First, in red, as a
. Secondly, in green, in four equal arc-segment pieces in
a . The correct result is that the two versions of the circle
coincide. There should be no visible difference between their locations.

For testing, I've invoked inkscape to render it via "inkscape -bblack
-e t1.png t1.svg". Actual result is that the red version is properly
circular but the green one deviates from it significantly. They coincide
at the four cardinal points, but between them the green one is located
well inside the red circle. I crudely measured its diagonal diameter
to be about 1.7% less than the circle's diameter.

In my real application, where I first noticed the fault, the deviations
are much more significant than the 1.7% that you see with the simple
test case. It seems to depend on the angular extent of the arc, in a
non-obvious manner. The bug is utterly devastating.

Googling reveals some talk about Inkscape internally approximating arcs
with Bezier curves. That could account for this, if it's done ineptly.
If Inkscape is to use such approximations then it must use more control
points, adaptively, to get a result that's close enough given the output
resolution. But it would be much better, of course, for Inkscape to
actually handle arcs as arcs, rendering them natively.

Bug#542953: sysvinit: fixes for GNU/kFreeBSD

2012-04-09 Thread Robert Millan
Hi Roger,

I gave a quick look at this bug report. I think the problem reported
in 2009 is no longer present. In particular:

  - The premise [1] doesn't seem to be true anymore. Perhaps what we
were missing is "X-Start-Before" support, which we're using now:

  $ grep X-Start-Before: /etc/init.d/freebsd-utils -H
  /etc/init.d/freebsd-utils:# X-Start-Before:mtab

  - I've been using Debian GNU/kFreeBSD in my main workstation for
about 6 months and haven't observed any problems related to this.

initscript still has a few (minor) issues with GNU/kFreeBSD support,
but they're mostly aesthetical. I'll prepare a report (and patch)
when I have some free time.

[1] "it is not possible to do GNU/kFreeBSD specific initialisation in
a dedicated script and ensure it is done at the right moment due to

Bug#668222: Overflowing arp table

2012-04-09 Thread Jaap Winius

Package: libcurl3
Version: 7.21.0-2.1+squeeze1

After upgrading to this version, none of the servers I maintain
displayed any problems except for one machine that uses an ADSL
broadband connection with RFC1483.

Some years ago I managed to configure the modem/router involved (a
Thomson SpeedTouch 780i WL) to operate in a DHCP spoofing mode so that
its public IP address is passed on to its only client, a Debian
GNU/Linux server currently running squeeze. On the server, all I had
to do was add an extra NIC and give it a simple dhcp client
configuration. For the latter I use the dhcpcd package, although I
forget whether this is what allows me to run the isc-dhcp-server on
the other NIC, or that it's important for the DHCP spoofing trick
itself.

Anyway , this worked fine for some years until the recent update for
libcurl3 and libcurl3-gnutls. For me, this update involved only these
two packages, and the event was followed almost immediately by these
error messages in the syslog:

1.) kernel: [5470349.890390] Neighbour table overflow.
1a.) kernel: [5470359.920776] __ratelimit: 1766 callbacks suppressed

Error 1a appeared regularly, once every 10 times for error 1. Six
hours after the update, I also started seeing this error in the syslog:

2.) kernel: [527233.379270] nf_conntrack: table full, dropping packet.

Whenever the error types 1 or 2 two would start, hundreds would
usually appear within the space of a few minutes and then stop. The
server is mostly quiet, but such events would occur several times a day.

Eventually I examined the arp table, which turned out to have far too
many entries. Instead of having just a few local IP/MAC address
combinations, it was full of public IP addresses. Only, in these cases
the MAC address was always the same -- I suspect it's the MAC address
of the nearby DSLAM, the IP address of which is the server's default
gateway. I tried a server reboot, but afterwards the arp table quickly
filled up and the errors continued.

After downgrading libcurl3 and libcurl3-gnutls to version 7.21.0-2,
the error messages disappeared. For some reason the arp table did not
clear up, even after several days, so the server was rebooted again
and now it's fine.

I don't know how, but it seems clear to me that the most recent
version of libcurl3 and/or libcurl3-gnutls introduced a bug that only
affects certain systems, such as the one described above.

Bug#668220: gnome: playing naev in fullscreen mode screws up gnome desktop until log-out. xfce is fine.

2012-04-09 Thread Andrew Engelbrecht
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.0+7
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

This is about graphics corruption that occurs whenever playing a
particular game in full screen mode in gnome3, but never in xfce:

I built and installed naev 0.5.2 and its associated ndata file: (It is
free software.)

http://sourceforge.net/projects/naev/files/naev-0.5.2/

When I launch the game in gnome3 with full screen mode enabled, the
screen flickers a bit during the loading screen, and then at full speed
at the main menu. If I then quit, gnome windows will occasionally blink
and disappear, and/or be partially drawn. If I then log out and back in
again, gnome thankfully appears normal again. If you try to run the
game, I suggest that you quit other programs beforehand, as you might
have to kill your session from a tty if you cannot see the menus.

Disabling VBOs doesn't solve the problem. If I disable full screen mode
in the game menu and relaunch the game after logging out and back into
gnome, there appears to be no problem, even with all of the graphics
optimizations enabled.

Also, the game works fine in xfce4 with either full screen mode enabled
or disabled. I did not test gnome fallback mode. This is a problem with
naev 0.4 and 0.5.1 in gnome3 as well. I think I tried naev 0.5 in
Trisquel 5.0 (based off of Ubuntu 11.04) and didn't have problems. One
of the lead developers in their irc channel said that they haven't made
real changes in the rendering code for a while.

I have a laptop with a core i3 390M with integrated graphics.

Thanks,
-Andrew

thanks for trying to push this to an end drafting a vote (which is
good) but a question come to my mind: do you think it's correct to try
to conclude this process without any public statement from Matthias on
the matter? I'm thinking about a long reply, but even a quick note.

I mean, part of the problems we've tried to highlight are the lack of
public communications, and that has manifested itself with no
contributions to this bug. Has the CTTE tried to indicate Matthias to
reply? (maybe coming from a high rank ctte might be more well
received.) Is it something you think it's important?

OTF is a standard trace format used by several high-performance tools,
using an ASCII encoding, which supports multiple streams. The libotf
provides support for reading/writing them.

libotf is actually already used by openmpi, could be used by vite, and
by the prospective eztrace package (ITP #658116).

There is already a libotf in debian, for handling OpenType Font. What
I intend to do is renaming the so to allow co-installation, but
keep development file names as is and use a conflict between -dev
packages. Does it sound OK?

Bug#667979: libtokyocabinet9: TokyoCabinet got endianness in DB wrong on both big- and little-endian architectures

2012-04-09 Thread Mikhail Gusarov
Hi.

Upstream Tokyo Cabinet uses little-endian data in databases and hence
the databases are portable.

After disabling the switch database format will not change for
big-endian machines, but *will* for little-endian ones, so existing
databases on little-endian machines will become unreadable and opening
those will fail with "invalid metadata" error.

BTW, I stand corrected in the original bug report: on big-endian
machines database format is correct.

It's the maintainers decision to decide the faith
of a bug report, to change severity, or to close
it if he sees fit. Of course you can discuss it,
and tell what you believe would be right. But also,
you should respect the maintainers decision (and

I think I've found something.

This bug seems to happen only if if you use libpam-systemd.

The reason why I didn't encounter this myself is because I've added
pam_loginuid.so to my login and gdm3* pam config locally.

Could you please update the pam configuration of login and/or the login
manager you are using and include pam_loginuid *before* @include
common-session. In my case I've changed /etc/pam.d/login and
/etc/pam.d/gdm3* and added a line
 session requiredpam_loginuid.so
just before
 @include common-session

I'm interested to know if that fixes the problem for you, too.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for your report. asterisk-app-fax has removed from Debian since
its functionalities have been merged in Asterisk, see #532942.

This bug does no longer apply, thus closing.

Bug#458436: [php-maint] Bug#458436: Bug#458436: php-pear doesn't warn when modules are upgradeable

This seems very similar to perl, perl packaging, and the use of cpan
to install perl modules into /usr/local.

That reads like a wishlist feature. If that feature is implemented
for any of the other languages with a similar structure then I am
unaware of it. For example if you use cpan to install perl modules
into /usr/local then that is outside the realm of the package manager
and those files are the responsibility of the person who put them
there.

Agreed.

Exactly. And specifying /usr/local is exactly what you are doing when
you use cpan, er..., pear to install php modules.

As soon as you type in the words "pear" instead of "apt-get" then you
are saying "I have the controls" and are taking responsibility for it.
The issue is that "pear" is not "apt-get" and the two are not
interchangable.

Perhaps this is a documentation issue? A problem is that upstream
projects often prefer and recommend these pseudo-package tools making
it harder to modify all of the needed documentation everywhere.

This isn't specific to php and is a problem with perl, python, ruby
and other languages too. You have fallen into a trap thinking that
upstream will create some random pseudo-package method and that it
will always be able to interoperate with apt. That just ain't so. In
most cases being able to make those interoperate would be impossible.

At worst I think going down your line of reasoning would force that
Debian must disable and remove (as you said) every upstream
pseudo-package tool. For example cpan must be removed because its
operation is outside the scope of apt's package operation. And yet if
that were done it would annoy users who expect that to be able to
work. There would be the opposite bug report asking to have that
feature enabled. These two views are diametrically opposed and in
conflict with each other. Only one can work. Most people prefer to
have upstream tools such as cpan and pear available and accept that
they operate outside the realm of the package manager.

> > PEAR was not really made to integrate well packaged (/usr) and external

Agreed. The two methods are irreconcilable at this time.

At that point I think the severity is a wishlist. It would be a new
and never before implemented feature. It would be waiting for
contributed code that might actually do it.

I stand corrected and am happy to include a change for the init script
to create the /var/lock directory and remove the directory from the
binary package. Unfortunately, I am not completely swamped with
real-world projects and will probably be unable to make even this simple
change within the next few weeks. NMUs for this issue are welcome, as
are co-maintainers for strongswan.

Policy section 9.1.4:

Packages must not include files or directories under `/run', or under
the older `/var/run' and `/var/lock' paths. The latter paths will
normally be symlinks or other redirections to `/run' for backwards
compatibility.

Policy section 9.3.2:

Files and directories under `/run', including ones referred to via the
compatibility paths `/var/run' and `/var/lock', are normally stored on
a temporary filesystem and are normally not persistent across a
reboot. The `init.d' scripts must handle this correctly. This will
typically mean creating any required subdirectories dynamically when
the `init.d' script is run.

Adam

I don't entirely agree. Anacron isn't guaranteeing anything, it just
tries to do a better job than cron. If a package has a regular job to
execute with security or other correctness implications, then using cron
is wrong in the first place.

I understand those concerns, but this is a long-standing behavior of the
anacron package, so I'm not inclined to change it on a whim. This needs
more thought.

Bug#668215: [iceweasel] garbage instead of random parts of texts

2012-04-09 Thread Mate Miklos
Package: iceweasel
Version: 11.0-2
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
After dist-upgrading today texts in iceweasel (not just web pages, but menu
items and tab titles as well) randomly change to garbage, and most of the time
back to normal. The ones that remain garbage can be 'fixed' by selecting them.
Unselecting garbles them back sometimes, though. This happens to random parts
with random lengths. May be a concurrency issue in text drawing?

This happens without any extensions as well. Having several tabs open
increases the chances of occurrence.

I upgraded to Iceweasel 11 from experimental a while ago, but this started
happening only today, so it's probably not Iceweasel's fault, but one of the
underlying library's, but I haven't seen this problem in other gtk apps yet.

According to apt log these relevant dependencies were upgraded:
libcairo2:amd64 (1.10.2-7, 1.12.0-2)
libpango1.0-0:amd64 (1.29.4-3, 1.30.0-1)
