Bug#654633: XFCE4-VOLUMED: mute and set the volume to 0, when I unmute it, it leave the volume in 0

2013-02-17 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: xfce4-volumed
Version: 0.1.13-3
Followup-For: Bug #654633

Hi.

I also experienced this while using Openbox and I found the solution in
the Ubuntu bug #883485 [1], comment #3 [2].

 1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/xfce4-volumed/+bug/883485
 2. https://bugs.launchpad.net/xfce4-volumed/+bug/883485/comments/3

But while for the comment #3, the issue was fixed by setting the
active-card property to
PlaybackInternalAudioAnalogStereoPulseAudioMixer, in my case I had to
install the xfce4-mixer package, start the xfce4-mixer application and
set the soundcard to Playback: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo (PulseAudio
Mixer). After I made this operation, a new soundcard appeard in
xfconf-query -c xfce4-mixer -l:
/sound-cards/PlaybackBuiltinAudioAnalogStereoPulseAudioMixer. So I set
the active-card to PlaybackBuiltinAudioAnalogStereoPulseAudioMixer
with:

 xfconf-query -c xfce4-mixer -p /active-card -s
PlaybackBuiltinAudioAnalogStereoPulseAudioMixer

and the xfce4-volumed started muting/unmuting correctly.

I think this behaviour is due to the fact that the active soundcard is
not set if the xfce4-mixer is not started and I presume this doesn't
happen in xfce, where xfce-session is working and starting all the
applications and setting the right properties in xfconf. That would be a
reason why this bug is overlooked.

Bug#686525: /usr/include/unicap/unicap.h: unicap.h uses private keyword as variable name

2012-12-29 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: libunicap2-dev
Version: 0.9.12-2
Followup-For: Bug #686525

Hi. How can I apply the debdiff patch? I'm trying to build a software
which needs libunicap2-dev, but it gets stuck on this bug. So I figure
that I should create a local package on my machine so I can use it until
this bug gets fixed in Debian. But I don't know much about debian
packaging; I tried some instructions that I found with Google, but I
didn't get anywhere; everything is very strange and confusing...

Some pointers would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Bug#696880: RFP: Fontik -- A font configuration GUI

2012-12-28 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: Fontik
  Version : 0.6.1
Upstream Author : Suresh P. I couldn't find an email address, but
looks like he can be contacted at
http://suruma.freeflux.net/contact/
* URL :
http://suruma.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2009/10/14/fontik-a-font-configuration-gui.html
* License : GPLv3
  Programming Lang: Genie/Vala
Description : A font configuration GUI

Fontik (pronounced Fontik or optionally ^%`*#=@@ ) is basically
intended to tweak and configure some properties of fonts. These settings
are usually set system-wide while installing the fonts. The power of
fontconfig is thus limited when it comes to the user. The user can
definitely override or enhance these settings, but for that, he has to
manually edit the ~/.fonts.conf each and every time. I haven't come
across any GUI tool that performs these tasks with ease. This is an
attempt on it.

At present, this tool can only perform limited tasks compared to the
actual power of fontconfig. This can be used with font collection
managers like Fontmatrix and the most recent one, Font Manager
(http://fontmanager.blogspot.com). The latter has inspired this work as
well.

Currently Fontik can be used to:

* Set hinting method for for individual fonts.
* Add alias (an alternate name for the font which can be picked up by
  applications) for a font.
* Tweak matrix size of font if needed. (Playing around with this is not
  recommended, usually)
* Blacklist fonts if the user doesn't like them or they take precedence
over other fonts of similar family.

Description : a virtual host monitor

topvhost is a curses-based display of virtual host activity on a web
server. The display is created by monitoring a collection of server log
files to show update time, update count, and selected fields from the
last record of each file in a top-like presentation which can be sorted
by last update time, update count, or domain name. Log file format and
display columns are configured using an extension of the apache
LogFormat syntax. The collection of associations between domain name and
log file is specified either by direct enumeration or a file system
glob() pattern in those cases where the domain name is part of the log
file path. These details are saved in a INI format configuration file in
the user's home directory.

Bug#692793: timidity-daemon: start-stop-daemon for stop from initscript should use --quiet

2012-11-08 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: timidity-daemon

Hello.

I noticed that the timidity initscript displays the message No timidity

uglifying the shutdown process:

# /etc/init.d/timidity stop

To fix it I've added the --quiet parameter to start-stop-daemon called
in stop. See the attached patch.

horst is a small, lightweight IEEE802.11 wireless LAN analyzer with a
text interface. Its basic function is similar to tcpdump, Wireshark or
Kismet, but it’s much smaller and shows different, aggregated
information which is not easily available from other tools. It is mainly
targeted at debugging wireless LANs with a focus on ad-hoc (IBSS) mode
in larger mesh networks. It can be useful to get a quick overview of
what’s going on on all wireless LAN channels and to identify problems.

Bug#692512: RFP: tilde -- a text editor for the console/terminal with intuitive interface

2012-11-06 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: tilde
  Version : 0.2.0
Upstream Author : Gertjan Halkes ti...@ghalkes.nl
* URL : http://os.ghalkes.nl/tilde.html
* License : GPLv3
  Programming Lang: C++
Description : a text editor for the console/terminal with intuitive
interface

Tilde is a text editor for the console/terminal, which aims to be as
intuitive as possible for users who are accustomed to GUI environments
such as Gnome, KDE and Windows. For example, the short-cut to copy the
current selection is Control-C, and to paste the previously copied text
the short-cut Control-V can be used. As another example, the File menu
can be accessed by pressing Meta-F.

The main audience for Tilde is users who normally work in GUI
environments, but sometimes require an editor for a console/terminal
environment. This may be because the computer in question is a server
which does not provide a GUI, or is accessed remotely over SSH. Tilde
allows these users to edit files without having to learn a completely
new interface, such as vi or Emacs do. A result of this choice is that
Tilde will not provide all the fancy features that Vim or Emacs provide,
but only the most used features.

Hello.

The lastfmsubmitd init script was lacking in features and it didn't
support the new Fancy output, so I modified it to conform with the new
Debian standards. Please see the attached patch. I hope you will find it
useful and include it in the official package.

Here's what I added/changed:
- added fancy output support
- added the status command
- added the inclusion of /etc/default/lastfmsubmitd in case it exists
(this is useful for configuring lastfmsubmitd arguments like
  --debug)

Thank you.

Bug#691794: Pretty LSB logging overriden by plymouth

2012-10-29 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: lsb-base,plymouth
Followup-For: Bug #691794

He actually has a point.

This is related to #685437. But while, #685437 fixes the issue of
plymouth breaking pretty printing when it's not active (the kernel is
not booted with the slash parameter), I now noticed that when plymouth
is running at boot and I press Home on the keyboard to see the boot
messages, Pretty LSB logging is not taking place.

I have no idea how to fix this yet, tho'.

2012-08-21 Thread Adrian Fita

The patch from that link breaks the module's compilation against a 3.2.x
kernel.

The attached patch works for me. It includes the asm headers based on
the kernel version.

Bug#685437: plymouth: init-functions.d/99-plymouth breaks init scripts fancy output

2012-08-20 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.5.1-6
Severity: normal

/lib/lsb/init-functions.d/99-plymouth overloads the functions declared in
/lib/lsb/init-functions.d/20-left-info-blocks, thus breaking the fancy output
of the init scripts (the scripts don't display the [ OK ]/[FAIL]/[info] blocks
in the front of the messages anymore).

init-functions.d/99-plymouth should load the hooks functions only when
plymouth is actually running (at boot/shutdown).

I think something like the following added right at the top of
init-functions.d/99-plymouth, before any of the functions declarations should
work (at least it works for me):

if [ ! $(/bin/plymouth --ping /dev/null 21) ]; then
return;

Bug#684974: RFP: areca -- Areca Backup - an Open Source personal backup solution

2012-08-15 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: areca
  Version : 7.2.10
  Upstream Author : Olivier PETRUCCI
aventin[.at.]users[.dot.]sourceforge[.dot.]net
* URL : http://www.areca-backup.org
* License : GPLv2
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : Areca Backup - an Open Source personal backup solution

Hello. I use Areca for a while for my personal backup needs and I find it very
good. It would be very nice to have Areca as a Debian package.

Quote from the website:

It basically allows you to select a set of files / directories to back-up,
choose where and how (as a simple file copy, as a zip archive, ...) they will
be stored, and configure post-backup actions (like sending backup reports by
email or launching custom shell scripts).

It has been designed to :

  * Be as simple as possible to set up: No complex configuration files to edit
- Your backup configuration (which is stored as an XML file) can be edited with
Areca's graphical user interface.
  * Be as versatile as possible: Areca can use advanced backup modes (like
delta backup) or simply produce a basic copy of your source files as a
standard directory or zip archive (readable by WinZip or other archivers).
  * Allow you to interact with your archives and the files they contain: Track
different versions of a specific file, browse your archives, recover or view
specific files, merge a set of archives, ...

Bug#682575: leptonica-progs: Please include more programs from prog/

2012-07-23 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: leptonica-progs
Severity: wishlist

Hi. I noticed that there are a lot of useful programs in the prog/
subdirectory of the leptonica lib. It would be nice to include more of
those in the Debian package. I found flipdetect_reg.c particularly
useful which I used in a project, but I was forced to compile the whole
leptonica lib from source because Debian didn't have it and I couldn't
get the deb-src package to build with the autotools in wheezy.

I also noticed that Debian is handled differently in the leptonica lib
source (there is a Makefile.am.debian which includes only a few of the
progs). Is there a reason for this?

Thanks.

Hi. Please excuse my tresspassing into this discussion, but wouldn't
putting lsb-base configuration vars in a file in the /etc/default

with the Debian Policy and FHM recommendations? This would mean dropping
/etc/lsb-base-logging.sh and altering the /lib/lsb/init-functions to

Bug#670958: [regression] HP ProBook 451x: udev/power_supply battery oscilates between remove and add

2012-05-01 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: src:linux-2.6
Followup-For: Bug #670958

Hi. I return with new info.

So, I tried the latest upstream kernel (3.4.0-rc5+) and the problem is
still there.

In the meantime, I stumbled upon a forum thread [1] on the Archlinux
forum which describes that after kernel 2.6.38.2-1, backlight setting
stopped working on 2 HP laptop models. Backlight isn't working on my
model as well (since as far as I can remember). I tried with
acpi_backlight=video, acpi_backlight=legacy and acpi_backlight=vendor at
boot, but nothing worked. Backlight doesn't work neither by setting
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness.

  1: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117556

So this is starting to look like an ACPI problem more and more. And I'm
betting it affects the majority of HP laptops released after 2008 - 2009
which have the same ACPI and BIOS implementation.

So far I have determined that the following HP laptop models are
affected:
- HP Probook 451x
- HP Compaq 315 (Ralf's)
- HP 6735-s (alculquicondor from the Archlinux forum thread)

ACPI functionalities that are broken so far:
- power_supply (battery and AC events - this bug)
- backlight setting

I don't know what's the next best course of action. I guess I can start
getting dirty and bissecting the releases between 2.6.37 and
2.6.38~rc6... I hope to have some results soon.

Bug#601948: linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae: Fails to resume from hibernate (all pm_test modes pass)

2012-05-01 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: linux-2.6
Followup-For: Bug #601948

Hi. I'm also suffering from this on linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae, HP
ProBook 4515s. The behaviour is exactly the same. It looks like the
kernel *doesn't even try* to resume from the file on the filesystem
(BTW: how does the kernel know from where to resume? I have never
understood that; it's a kind of magic for me).

I also have run all the tests Documentation/power/basic-pm-debugging.txt
and all the /sys/power/pm_test tests work fine. The ones with echo
platform /sys/power/disk and echo disk /sys/power/state don't
run, obviously, as the kernel doesn't try to resume from the filesystem.

Running with init=/bin/bash gives the same: bash: echo: write error: No
such device.

Suspend-to-RAM and resume from suspend works fine.

I remember that hibernation worked in the past, but I haven't used it
for some time because I mainly keep my laptop connected to the AC and I
use Suspend-to-RAM alot. Now I was curious to check if hibernation works
and... bummer.

Bug#671116: linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae: LCD backlight setting doesn't work on HP ProBook 451x

2012-05-01 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.2.15-1
Severity: normal

Hi. This is bugging me for quite some time (more than 6 months now).

I can not configure the LCD backlight brightness on my HP ProBook 4515s.

I tried booting with acpi_backlight=legacy|vendor, but all they did
was to keep the brightness to maximum; keyboard shortcuts didn't do
anything and also echo 10 /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
didn't do anything.

Booting without the acpi_backlight kernel parameter just dims the LCD to
a lower brightness level, but again, I can't change it neither through
the keyboard, nor the sysfs interface. I preffer to keep it to maximum
with the acpi_backlight=vendor.

I also tried booting with acpi_osi=Linux, but it made no change
whatsoever.

Changing the brightness through the sysfs interface does nothing (it
appears it does, but the LCD doesn't change brightness physicaly):

root@x:~# ls /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/
actual_brightness bl_power brightness device max_brightness power
subsystem type uevent
root@x:~# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
24
root@x:~# echo 10 /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
root@x:~# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness
10
root@x:~# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
10

Thanks.

Bug#671116: linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae: LCD backlight setting doesn't work on HP ProBook 451x

2012-05-01 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: linux-2.6
Followup-For: Bug #671116

Good news. After applying the latest BIOS update from HP, setting the
LCD backlight started to work through the sysfs interface. I had to
remove the acpi_backlight kernel boot parameter and then it started to
work. echo 10 /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness changes
the LCD brightness.

But the keyboard shortcuts still don't work. acpi_listen gives me the
following when pressing Fn+F7 (brightnesdown) and Fn+F8 (brightnessup):

# acpi_listen
video/brightnessup BRTUP 0086 K
video/brightnessdown BRTDN 0087 K

It looks like some events need to be added in acpi-support, which should
transfer this bug to acpi-support. But there is another way perhaps?...

For anyone having this problem, here is how to do the BIOS update:
- the URL from where to download the BIOS updates is the following:

http://h2.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=encc=usprodNameId=3935147prodTypeId=321957prodSeriesId=3935146swLang=13taskId=135swEnvOID=2095
- first download and install ROM Image for HP Notebook System BIOS
(68GPI) Remote ROM Flash - SSM Compliant (for F.10)
- then download and install HP Notebook System BIOS Update (for F.20)
- I had a Windows XP on a separate partition, so it was easy; if you
don't have a Windows installation, I think you'll need to use the
FreeDOS bootable media that HP has available

Bug#670958: linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae: udev/power_supply battery oscilates between remove and add

2012-04-30 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.2.15-1
Severity: normal

Hi.

I'm using Debian Wheezy/Testing, kernel 3.2.15-1 on a HP PowerBook 4515s
laptop.

I noticed that /var/log/syslog is getting spammed with messages from
laptop-mode, like in the attached syslog-laptop-mode_spam.log.gz file.

Also, at the same time, upower --monitor shows the messages from
upower-monitor.log.gz.

In Windows XP I don't see any issue with the battery and also running HP
Battery Check [1] I got the result that the battery is functioning correctly,
but is week (admittedly it is more than a year old, but still holds a charge
for 30 mins).

   1: http://h20239.www2.hp.com/techcenter/battery/battery_ts.htm

So it looks like a kernel issue. I started checking the udev events with
'udevadm monitor --property' and got the messages from the
udevadm_monitor.log.gz file.

This happens only when the battery and the power cable are connected. When
running with the battery removed or without the power cable connected (running
only on battery) this is not happening.

Here are some more discussions about this:
- a Debian Bug reported [2]
- and also a thread on the Upower mailinglist [3]

   2: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=638970
   3:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/devkit-devel/2012-February/001225.html

I hope this gets solved rather soon. With top, I see the upowerd daemon using
quite a lot of CPU from time to time.

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response. Indeed, with
linux-image-2.6.32-5-686-bigmem I don't experience this behaviour
anymore. With 2.6.32, 'udevadm monitor --property' doesn't show any
'remove' or 'add' actions, only 'change' (I left it running several
minutes).

I also added the dmesg from 2.6.32 (dmesg-2.6.32-5.gz) and from 3.2.0
(dmesg-3.2.0-2.gz).

Which file has the change you are referring to? git shortlog
v2.6.37..v2.6.38-rc6 doesn't show me anything obvious fitting that
description.

This was just a wild hunch. I really don't know much about the Linux
kernel. I greped after power_supply in the source tree and that's
where the most of the results were. I now noticed that drivers/acpi
also has some stuff about power_supply and battery (which makes me
thinking if it's not just a buggy ACPI implementation on my machine...
in any case, I would be glad to get it fixed one way or another).

I'll check the latest kernel,

Excellent, thanks.

I'll check the new kernel tomorrow as now it's really late in my
timezone and I have to go sleep.

This patch (besides being reversed) makes all pidofproc with

I propose the attached patch, that only resorts to calling /bin/pidof

Can you please test it and report back?

You're rigth. Your patch is better. I tested it and works fine.

Followup-For: Bug #575177

Hi. If it's any help, I just filled a bug against bootlogd which seems
to mess-up the plymouth text bootsplash during boot:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=669017 .

I don't know whose fault is here, but without bootlogd, plymouth text
works fine here.

Bug#668958: lsb-base: pidofproc doesn't return correct status for daemons without pidfile

2012-04-15 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: lsb-base
Version: 4.1+Debian0
Severity: normal

Hi.

I noticed that /etc/init.d/hddtemp status wasn't returning the correct
status when the daemon was running. hddtemp daemon doesn't create a pidfile
when started, so I tracked the problem back to the pidofproc function
from /lib/lsb/init-functions.

Basically I put the section with if [ -x /bin/pidof ] [ !
$specified ]; then before the section with base=${1##*/}. Now the
function is corectly detecting the pids and /etc/init.d/hddtemp status
gives the right information. Please check the attached patch. I also
tested the other daemons on my system, both with pidfiles and without
and all seem to work fine.

Bug#643028: network-manager-gnome: refuses to join new wireless networks

2012-03-19 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: network-manager-gnome
Version: 0.9.2.0-2
Followup-For: Bug #643028

I am using lightdm as session manager and openbox and I also experienced
this issue with network-manager-applet not reacting when trying to
connect to wireless networks.

At first I solved it by starting
/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 from
openbox's autostart script (~/.config/openbox/autostart).

Then I noticed the file
/etc/xdg/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop which
starts polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1, but only for
GNOME, XFCE, Unity (see the line OnlyShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;Unity;).

So I copied
/etc/xdg/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop to
~/.config/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop, removed
the line OnlyShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;Unity; and now it works.

Don't know what's the right way to manage this for other sessions other
than the configured GNOME, XFCE and Unity ones...

Bug#653395: gnucash: Gnucash fails to start; displaying gnc.gui:ERROR

2011-12-27 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: gnucash
Followup-For: Bug #653395

Dear Maintainer,

Hmm... I deleted the /usr/lib32 symlink and now it starts ok.

I found the /usr/lib32 symlink solution from here:
http://thegrebs.com/irc/debian/2008/08/18 . I tried it and it worked.
Don't know why, I didn't had time to investigate further. I just needed
a quick resolve.

Anyway, it works now, in my case. If it doesn't manifest on other users
I think you can close the bug report.

Bug#457993: RFP: wixi -- multi-platform wiki application for the desktop

2007-12-27 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: wnpp
Severity: RFP

Wixi is a multi-platform wiki application for the desktop. It is
written in python/wxpython and uses txt2tags to generate plain text to
many other formats. The goal is to provide a simple wiki tool around
the txt2tags document generator and also be multi-platform.

Software's homepage is http://wixi.sourceforge.net/ and it's license
is GPL as seen on the project's page at sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/wixi/.

Bug#436158: roxterm: My mistake

2007-08-05 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: roxterm
Version: 1.5.2-2
Severity: normal

This is not a bug. It was my fault.

To be able to edit the keyboard shortcuts by hovering over the menu
options you need to activate the option Enable menu shortcut keys in
GNOME-Preferences-Menus Toolbars, or to activate the option
/desktop/gnome/interface/can_change_accels in gconf-editor.

Still, I think that this should be made more clear in the documentation
as not many people have Enable menu shortcut keys activated.

Bug#435989: roxterm: Additional information

2007-08-05 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: roxterm
Version: 1.5.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #435989

I noticed that if I modify a shortcut in the menu (by hovering over the
menu item and pressing the key combination that I want) the
..config/roxterm.sourceforge.net/Shortcuts gets created and I can copy
the profile through configuration editor.

Still, roxterm should create the directory on startup if it doesn't
exist, so that one could copy the Default profile using Configuration
editor regardless if he changed any of the shortcuts of not. Or at least
should be notified that roxterm could not copy the profile.

Bug#421360: avahi-daemon: Better set $PATH variable

2007-05-02 Thread Adrian Fita
Package: avahi-daemon
Version: 0.6.18-4
Followup-For: Bug #421360

You'd better set the $PATH variable somewhere, because there are other
commands that won't be found.

Eg.: after replacing sort with /usr/bin/sort like the above, I get the
following error:
/usr/lib/avahi/avahi-daemon-check-dns.sh: line 75: diff: command not found
