Bug#892001: ITP: dbus-broker -- Linux D-Bus Message Broker

I understand the point of view, but given the release is 6+ months
away, there's all the time in the world to have it tested. And if we
find something that for whatever reason is completely broken in Debian
but works completely fine in Fedora/Yocto/etc then we can simply remove
it from testing. Nothing depends on it, so unless I'm missing
something, there's no extra cost involved as far as I can see.

Indeed, it makes sense to me.

What deadlines did you have in mind? Are you intending to offer this as a
"first-class citizen" option in bullseye? When dbus-broker has only been
in the archive for two days, that doesn't seem like very much testing
to have confidence that it will be suitable to provide important system
services through the 3 year lifetime of bullseye.

I think it's fine as an optional package that users have to opt-in
for. Nothing depends on it, so it won't be installed by default
anywhere. Also there's no config to do to switch - install or
uninstall.

Also there's no difference to what Fedora shipped for a couple of
years now - we got no patches, special build flags or anything. So
it's good enough to be in bullseye in my view.
I'm not a Debian developer nor a Debian maintainer but I think I see
what Simon said. People trust us to provide working packages for which
we had enough testing.

A possible compromise would be to have it landed to Sid/Unstable,
blocking testing migration, not shipping it for Debian 11, trying it in
testing after Debian 11 release then upload it to bullseye-backports
after 3 months in testing if the results are successful.

deadlines are fast approaching - dbus-broker has cleared NEW, so I'd
like to sort out the details regarding repository and team
maintainership and make it available in unstable/testing. As a recap,
I'm totally on board with having it as part of the same team area as
dbus and with the same maintainers/uploaders.
We don't need to sort out the package split immediately or even for
bullseye, as it's made to be co-installable out of the box.

Thanks!

Hello Luca and thanks again for working on this,

I don't know if my request / question is too early in the process: do
you plan to wrote a wiki page explaining how to enable it and replace
gdbus with dbus-broker?

I'm pretty sure in the Debian a11y team we'll have some early adopter
able to verify if everything works as Orca relies exclusively on dbus to
work.

Best regards and happy new year all.

Bug#892001: ITP: dbus-broker -- Linux D-Bus Message Broker

2020-12-14 Thread Alex ARNAUD

I have not done a detailed low-level review like that no - that would
require way more time than I have :-)

I have however used it for over a year now, in production, without any
major issues or incompatibilities. Some minor bug fixes here and there,
that were contributed upstream (mostly SELinux related). But I do not
believe I have double-fork services - do you have a particular one in
mind? I could do some quick testing.

More importantly, I think it has been the default for Fedora since last
year. That ought to be enough battle-testing for us to provide it as a
option :-)
I also know many Orca screen reader users who rely on d-bus broker
without reporting downside, they report an improvement in performance.
They are both in Fedora or in Arch Linux. Orca relies only on d-bus to
receive accessibility notifications.

As soon as I could try d-bus broker on Debian and as an Orca user myself
I'll use it.

Many thanks Luca for working on it.

Bug#972089: Backport hplip 3.20.5 to buster-backports

2020-10-13 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Hello Didier,

Thanks for your quick answer.

There are multiple reasons why I use hplip:

 * First of all, I'm a visual-impaired guy and I help many other
visual-impaired people using Debian, so the consequence we couldn't
use the printer screen, we rely exclusively on HP Toolbox to get
informations such as the status, the cartridge level, etc.
 * To configure our printer to work on WIFI, we use hp-setup

Can I do the same with DriverlessPrinting?

It seems sane-airscan is not available on Debian 10, only on Debian 11.

Thanks in advance.

Le 12/10/2020 à 21:15, Didier 'OdyX' Raboud a écrit :

Hello Alex, and thanks for your bugreport,

Thankfully, now with driverless printing [0] and sane-airscan [1], printers
such as yours shouldn't need hplip anymore. (Also, hplip's code quality isn't
monotonously upwards, so printing without hplip is often a preferable option).
That said, the situation in sid and bullseye (current testing) is likely much
better in these respects than in buster. Could you maybe test driverless
printing, and/or sane-airscan?

As for the backporting; thank you for the patch removal proposals. As I've
just uploaded 3.20.9+dfsg0-3 to unstable; it should migrate to testing in
about 5-10 days, so , if your testing isn't successful, I'll prepare a 3.20.9
backport. I'm testing a build as I write this.

Please report the results of your tests if you have the occasion.

Best regards, and thanks for your work!

Cheers,
OdyX

Hello,

Why I'd like this to be backported to buster-backports ?
My new printer, an HP 2700 series is only compatible with HP Lip
3.20.5+. This is based on my own tests where only half of printed pages
are printed. This is also based on the upstream table
<https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/i
ndex> where it is indicated the "HP DeskJet 2700 All-in-One Printer series"
is compatible with 3.20.5.

What did I already do to figure this out?
With the help of Samuel Thibault, I was able to recompile HP Lip 3.20.5
on a Buster virtual machine and I produced two patch for it. The patches
are attached to this mail. One is to update the debian/patches/series
file and the second one is to refresh the patch 0072 (just a quilt
refresh on it). I initially would like to propose a pull request on
Salsa but there is no branch to submit the changes.

What my patch does?
It reverts all the python3.8 specific patches because Debian Buster is
based on Python 3.7 and because python3.7 library is named "python3.7m",
not only python3.7.

What I think HP Lip should be backported to buster-backports?
I think it'd be really helpful for people would like to stay on stable
with new HP printers which require new HP Lip to have a new version in
backports.

How do I check if it works?

1. I upgraded the compiled packages with the following command:

sudo dpkg -iO .../*.deb

2) I rebooted my virtual machine to ensure the new HP Lip version is loaded

3) I configured my HP Desktop 3630 printer (launched with
system-config-printer)

4) I tried a print test job launched with system-config-printer

5) I tried a scan with simple-scan

Result:
Everything seems to work correctly.

Thanks in advance,
Alex.

I've used the package purple-matrix on Debian 10 since at least 6 months
through Pidgin. It's not a perfect tool, have issues but in my opinion
it is usable. Sometimes purple-matrix is disconnected or makes Pidgin to
crash but it's quite rare. It's sufficient to restart Pidgin to make it
working again.

I have two points why I think we should have it into next stable:

 * This is very difficult for a stable user to use purple-matrix. In my
case, I have had to rebuilt the package due to dependencies and it's
clearly something not easy for all.
 * As a visual-impaired person, purple-matrix through Pidgin is the
most accessible Matrix client I've used.

There are still reasons why we would like to keep it in unstable:

 * There are no commits in 2020
 * The project doesn't publish new release and "just" push commits

In my humble opinion, the drawbacks of keeping it to unstable are more
important.

@Kurt: I let you decide if you prefer to keep close or not but since the
creation of this issue in 2017 many commits come to the project.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Since the upgrade from imagemagick from "8:6.9.10.23+dfsg-2.1" to
"8:6.9.10.23+dfsg-2.1+deb10u1" I obtain an error when converting an
image from jpg to pdf.

I execute the following command-line:

convert /tmp/37fkw0k6.jpg -density 300 /tmp/37fkw0k6.pdf

And I obtain the following error:
convert-im6.q16: attempt to perform an operation not allowed by the
security policy `PDF' @ error/constitute.c/IsCoderAuthorized/408.

It makes the program I use to read my mail through OCR (I'm

downgrade to make it working again.

If you upload a package to buster-backports, you'll have to maintain it

Bug#941744: Remove recommendation on unattended-upgrades as not recommended by installer team

2019-10-04 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Package: python3-software-properties
Version: 0.96.20.2-2

Hello,

When trying to install "gnome-packagekit" I've seen that its tried to
install me "unattended-upgrades" as a recommended package and this
practice seems to be discouraged.

It looks better to let administrator or user to install
unattended-upgrades to avoid upgrade surprise on the user computer.

See the mail below for details provided by the installer team:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2018/05/msg00250.html

If needed I could provide you a patch to switch the recommendation to a
suggestion or just remove it.

Backporting the fix to Buster is IMHO important because a end-user
installing "gnome-packagekit" will receive update automatically without
being completely aware. (I assume users trust DM or DD to do a clean job
for them).

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Alex.

DESCRIPTION FROM UPSTREAM:

Hello all,

Environment:

  * Debian Testing
  * Compiz 2:0.8.16.1-11
  * My shortcut to switch to the next/previous workspace are control +
alt + left/right arrow

Steps to reproduce:

 1. Launch the Orca screen reader
 2. Switch to the next workspace

Result with Marco 1.22: When I switch to another workspace there is a
window like the alt + tab switcher that permits to Orca to be informed
of a switched workspace so Orca announces "workspae X then the window
title".

Result with Compiz: Orca announces the new window but not the new
workspace. It is important for a blind people to know that he has
switched to a new workspace because he can switch by mistake and so he
wouldn't be informed that he has switched.

DESCRIPTION FROM UPSTREAM:

Hi,
How would you feel about a GSettings backend for storing and loading
configuration options? At Hypra we need to ship some config overrides
targeting visually impaired users, and GSettings provides a pretty neat way of
shipping vendor overrides, as well as integrating well with the DEs like GNOME
or MATE. GSettings also supports runtime changes already, as well as
command-line and graphical tools to read an manipulate the values.
GSettings also has backends itself, and can use INI-like files, in-memory only,
or RPC-based methods like dconf for storage, which allows for a wide variety of
use cases.
Compiz 0.9 has a GSettings backend, and although I'm not sure it's the best
implementation it works fairly well, although it looks a bit over-engineered.
What do you think about this? Would it be possible to add a GSettings backend,
and where would you see it?

Bug#921442: Switcher: accessibility: When switching between panel Compiz doesn't send events to accessiblity bus

Hello all,
Environment:

Debian Testing/Buster
Compiz 2:0.8.16.1-8

Steps to reproduce:

Add a shortcut to switch to the next panel, here control + alt + tab (don't
forget to remove the assigned shortcut on next window (all))
Launch the Orca screen reader
Press the defined shortcut

Result with Compiz 0.8:
Orca doesn't announce the new panel
Result with Compiz 0.9:
Orca announces the new selected panel
It's gtk-window-decorator that should emit accessibility events for the such
case but it emits nothing in this case.

Bug#921440: Scale: change default shortcut for "Initiate window Picker" to avoid conflit with applications

DESCRIPTION FROM UPSTREAM:

Hello all,
We've discovered when testing Compiz Reloaded that the shortcut for the function "Initiate
window Picker" is in conflict with other shortcuts like "move to the previous column in a
table" used by the Orca screen reader.
We propose to adopt the shortcut window + w as Compiz 0.9 does. I personally
found it simpler to memorize and understand.
You could find where the shortcut is also used here:
https://defkey.com/what-means/alt-shift-up
We plan to enable Compiz by default for all users of assistive technologies on
Debian and we would like to avoid to make change without being benefit to all
distributions.
What do you think about this proposal?
Best regards,
Alex.

Until upstream could change this behavior, could it be possible to
change this downstream into Debian ?

Best regards,
Alex.

Bug#921438: Switcher: Add default shortcut for next panel and previous panel

User: b...@hypra.fr
Usertags: hypra samuel
Forwarded: https://gitlab.com/compiz/compiz-core/issues/138

DESCRIPTION FROM UPSTREAM:

Hello all,
I propose to change the default shortcut behavior for the switcher to fit what
Marco and Metacity do:

1. Add control + alt + tab to go to the next panel and control + alt + shift +
tab to go to the previous panel
2. Remove the shortcut for "Next Window (all window)" or remap it to windows +
tab / windows + shift + tab

Why I propose that ?

Blind users need to have a default keyboard shortcut to go to the panel because
they can't use the mouse. Most of them also not has the skills to add one to
CCSM.
I assume being consistent could be a good idea to simplify migration from Marco
to Compiz for example

What do you think ?
Best regards,
Alex.

Until upstream could change this behavior, could it be possible to
change this downstream into Debian ?

Alex.

Bug#917232: Caret navigation can skip document contents

2018-12-24 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Package: evince
Version: 3.30.2-2
Tags: a11y upstream
Owner: b...@hypra.fr
User: b...@hypra.fr
Usertags: hypra colomban
Forwarded: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/issues/1017#note_356755

DESCRIPTION FROM UPSTREAM:

Hello,
When navigating with the keyboard through caret navigation (F7), one can miss
some parts of a document with a layout more complex than simple lines (e.g.
columns, tables, etc.).
This comes from the "smart" caret feature that tries to keep the X position when going to
the next line, and which does not go to the next line but the next object with a reasonable Y
position and a "best" X position (which might or might not be on the next line). One can
see !81 (comment 316060) for some detailed explanations on how this works, and a separate bug
resulting from this (which has been fixed now).
The fact Down Arrow can skip contents is a serious problem for screen reader users
(visually impaired, etc.) as they might not have any way to know they didn't
"see" the whole document.
There might be a few solutions here:

A simple solution would be removing this fancy X restoration feature, as although giving
a nice "editor" feeling with simpler documents, might not really be so useful.
AFAIK, the cart navigation mode is mostly here of accessibility purpose, and this X caret
feature actually reduces usability in the current situation. Instead, merely go to the
next logical line.
A more complicated solution could be to make sure to always go on the next logical line and never
after. So, instead of choosing any text at the "best" X,Y position, choose only the
"best" X,Y position on the next logical line.

What do you think?

Bug#917224: Thunderbird 60 delete is sluggish with Orca / accessibility

DESCRIPTION FROM UPSTREAM:

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0

Steps to reproduce:

Hello all,

Environment:
- Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch"
- Thunderbird 60.3.0
- Orca 3.30 (latest stable) Orca master (from git)

Steps to reproduce are described here
0) Start the Orca screen reader
1) Open a big folder (here I'm testing with a folder with only 600 mails)
2) Remove a conversation

Actual results:

Visually on the screen, the mail conversation is delete quickly but
Thunderbird seems to take 5 seconds to send events to the Orca screen reader
and in consequence Orca announce the deletion of a mail after 5 seconds.

Expected results:

Thunderbird should send the events faster as it was on Thunderbird 52

The current situation is really critical for us because 5 seconds is really
slow for a software to respond. For blind or visual-impaired user, the only
interface they rely on is the screen reader.

Other users encounter many lags with Thunderbird with Orca on GNU/Linux, see on
the Orca mailling list those threads:
- https://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2018-November/msg00056.html

The Orca developer has already checked the time to process event and Orca takes
less than one second to process them, see below, so it's why we're thinking of
an issue in Thunderbird himself
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2018-November/msg00119.html

We (Hypra) would be OK to help to debug this as both QA and development but
we'll really appreciate help on the way to debug such performances issues.

Best regards,
Alex.

Bug#909176: alt-F1 shortcut is not transferring focus correctly

Tags: a11y

User: b...@hypra.fr
Usertags: hypra samuel
Forwarded: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/issues/851

DESCRIPTION FROM UPSTREAM:

Hello,

The background is in https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/85 . One of the
conclusions, in https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/85#note_264804 , is
that mate-panel is not properly transferring focus on alt-F1 keyboard shortcut.
(on alt-F2 it is working properly).
How to reproduce

install gtk3, which contains the fix for
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/85 (can be seen by
gdk/x11/gdkdevicemanager-core-x11.c's APPEARS_FOCUSED testing for both
has_focus and has_focus_window).
run the mate desktop
run accerciser, in its Event Monitor, open window element and enable
window:activate and window:deactivate
run e.g. mate-terminal, accerciser shows window:activate for it
press alt-f1

Actual result

accerciser shows only window:activate for the mate-panel
Expected result

accerciser should show a window:deactivate for mate-terminal, and
window:activate for mate-panel

It used to work only by luck before, only because gtk used to deactivate itself
during a keyboard grab. But as discussed in
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/85 that behavior poses accessibility
feedback issues, is not coherent, and keyboard grab feedback will not be
available in wayland anyway. Thus @ebassi saying in
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/85#note_264804 that not transferring
focus properly is the actual bug.

could confirm my fix is good or not in term of translation.

FYI, on Buster, the issue doesn't appear so I assume getting French

Well, since caja is the fork, working upstream means nautilus, no?

I'm not sure. It should really be helpful if you report an issue against
the mate-eiciel github and add a link if needed to the Nautilus patch to
have the input of the developer.

I don't have the background to give you a better answer. I'd prefer to
see the input of upstream author.

What file manager are you using? Caja or Nautilus?

coreutils

Are you able to use eiciel with Caja? If not, I assume it's why there is a
fork.

No clue, I just tried to build it (as part of QA). That failed and I
sent a patch. I've sent more than 1000 patches fixing build failures now
and I admit that I don't try using each and every package that I fix.

I understand. I'm part of the Debian Mate Team and I don't use
caja-eiciel myself.

Looks like upstream's mail bounces. Is nautilus eiciel dead upstream? If
so maybe take over rather than fork?

It's not as easy as we expect. I should check and come back here.

Best regards,
Alex.

Upstream is here:https://github.com/darkshram/mate-eiciel

I think you mean https://github.com/rofirrim/eiciel.

The Github link here is not for Caja but for Nautilus. Here we're
talking about Caja only. So https://github.com/darkshram/mate-eiciel is
the right place for us.

On Debian, there are two packages: eiciel and caja-eiciel

What file manager are you using? Caja or Nautilus?

packaged a fork and thus you should register your code copy. See
https://wiki.debian.org/EmbeddedCodeCopies for details. By forking
upstreams, you are copying bugs (like this one). That is why the Debian
policy discourages forking or packaging forks. I've clone bug -2 for
dealing with the code copy.

I'm neither the upstream maintainer nor the initial author of the package.

Are you able to use eiciel with Caja? If not, I assume it's why there is
a fork.

Once eiciel has fixed this, I hope that it trickles down via the
mate-eiciel git repository into Debian.

I hope so :).

Alex.

If it's an upstream issue, could you report and submit your patch

Let us know.

caja-eiciel fails to cross build from source, because configure.ac hard
codes the build architecture pkg-config in one place. The attached patch
fixes that and makes caja-eiciel cross build successfully. Please
consider applying it.

Bug#901402: atril: Please add option to highlight text

2018-07-03 Thread Alex ARNAUD
Thank you Andreas for the report. As it don't involve the packaging it
has to be discuss upstream.

See the upstream issue: https://github.com/mate-desktop/atril/issues/254

Best regards,
Alex.

Le 12/06/2018 à 16:37, Andreas Schmidt a écrit :

Package: atril
Version: 1.20.1-1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

would it be possible to implement an option to highlight text? Just yesterday,
a client asked me to correct mistakes directly in a PDF file he sent me, so I
searched around for a PDF viewer that allowed both text annotations and text
highlighting. Turns out I got lucky with evince! As atril is a fork of evince,
I assume it shouldn't be too hard to port this feature to atril. :-)

The following suggestion might be harder to implement as it goes beyond what is
available in evince yet: It would be great if text could be highlighted not
only with colored backgrounds, but also with differently styled lines. Thus,
one could strike-through text that should be deleted, mark text that is to be
replaced with a full line, or highlight ambiguous text with dotted or curly
lines. (Perhaps there would even be a way to make an obvious "Insert text
here!"-mark?)

Like evince, atril already offers the option to change an annotation's
properties (author, color, opacity, initial window state, and icon). What do
you think about saving these attributes as (predefined and custom) profiles?
Ideally, one could then link these profiles to buttons: If, say, "Mark as
deleted" is pressed, the text could be highlighted with a black (or green, or
yellow) full (or dotted, or curly) line over a red (or whatever) background.

I hope these ideas are not impossible to implement -- after all, I installed
MATE for a reason and would like to always use atril instead of evince. :-)

Thanks for your consideration and best regards

Andreas

that it is a regression when compared with gtk+2.0.

Indeed, It's a regression compared to GTK 2.0 and a really annoying bug
for low-vision people using screen magnification software like Compiz.

I'm visual-impaired and user of a screen magnifier to write this message.

A concrete example of the bug is the password entry for the WiFi on
Network Manager, the screen magnifier doesn't follow the text and
follows the top of the screen so the only way to see the password is to
type it on a text editor and copy-paste it on network manager field.
With the Samuel's patch I no longer have to do that :), it's really
appreciable.

a11y/entry: Fix text coords not adjusted for alloc

What is missing is the "allocation" part of x/y coordinates. Since

 gtk_entry_realize doesn't call gtk_widget_set_window(priv->text_area),
the coordinates returned by gdk_window_get_origin don't include it.

 This patch fixes this.

Hi

I'm using BRLTTY with eSpeak as output module. I have set the punctuation level
to all:

 $ grep 'punct' /var/lib/brltty/brltty.prefs
 speech-punctuation all

but for instance "|" and "<" are not announced, whereas "-" or even '"' is.
Using `speak --punct'|<>' 'a|b| <= c'` works, too.

Thanks

Dear Maintainer,

Had been experiencing some flakiness in my video display and then the
mounse and keyboard locked up. I sshed in from another machine and tried
'sudo init 6', but that lock up the terminal session. Finally I resorted
to a hard reset.

On reboot, the lightdm login screen was fine, but when I logged in all
the mate components (top bar, mate terminal etc) were being dimplayed
in weird colours (reds and yellows, it looked like an indexed 256 colour
pallete).

After some considerable debugging I found that switching from the
marco-compton window manager back to just marco fixed everything. To make
sure this is what it was, I switched back to the compton version which
again had weird colours and then back to marco which fixed the issue.

IMHO, marco-compton should either be fixed or deprecated.

Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?

I activated the "Place Windows" plugin

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
  ineffective)?

n/a

* What was the outcome of this action?

irrispective of the algorithm chosen, the plugin insists on placing new
windows BELOW existing windows (not always but most of the times)

* What outcome did you expect instead?

every WM I used (and that comprised compiz+place_windows, until recently)
placed new windows above existing windows, because when a user
instantiates a new window, either using a shortcut and the "Commands"
plugin, a desktop launcher or a system menu, said user 99.3% wants to
use the new window immediately

That said, I'm trying to use compiz standalone (no DE) with the support of
a dock/panel (either tint2 or cairo-dock).

I'd like to help fixing this problem giving you any further additional info.

Thank you in advance, gb

Hi,

Just as a reminder, compiz FTBFS on armel and armhf. Historically these
platforms have been treated separately due to GLES2, and I wasn't sure
the following workaround for the libmetacity upgrade was needed for
them:
| commit c36fa3cf661eb363f75ca54fe642bad0f0377f40
| Author: Cyril Brulebois <cy...@debamax.com>
| Date: Fri Oct 21 15:48:11 2016 +
|
| Try disabling metacity support.
|
| The metacity bump from 3.20 to 3.22 made private a bunch of items the gtk

| window decorator was relying on (see #1629749 in LP).

The upstream bug has been resolved since this workaround was put into
place, so we could try merging that, and removing this workaround. If
that doesn't work well enough, we can extend the workaround to arm
platforms.

Either way, this can be assessed once compiz has reached testing.

Cheers,

Dear Maintainer,

I, too, was surprised and pleased to see Compiz back in the Debian repositories.
I have installed it on a Debian Unstable installation with MATE on a fairly old
AMD64 desktop system with a nvidia GeForce 6200 video card with the nvidia
driver.

The problem I am having is with the window decorations. Decorations do appear,
but they are not the normal ones for the theme I am using (BlackMATE).
It's the same with any other theme.

The error messages I am getting are:
compiz (decor) - Warn: failed to bind pixmap to texture
compiz (decor) - Warn: No default decoration found, placement will not be
correct

gtk-window-decorator is running.

I used Compiz for years in the past, so I am quite familiar with it and CCSM.

Can you give me a clue to help me fix this? I would be very grateful.

I don't have the issue you describe with Firefox ESR on Debian 8 "Jessie".

Firefox developers think also to user of Windows and Mac and you could
install add-ons outside of the Debian repository so the check shouldn't
be an issue if it works properly.

This goes on until I click on "Cancel", and then everything is
fine, no matter how much time I wait before clicking the
"Cancel" button.

Not a big deal, but still a little bit annoying and confusing.
Why does Firefox check things, that are hopefully already done
by dpkg? I don't have non-Debian plugins installed.

one with the issue and the one without?

Same Thunderbird regression on Firefox. I'm not sure the policy
authorize us to migrate an application from GTK2 to GTK3 on a stable
release.

IMO, until GTK2 is available from the Mozilla compilation file, we
should provide Firefox ESR compiled with GTK2 on Jessie.

What you're asking to us is to support a deprecated feature since 2015,
see: https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2015/09/msg0.html

You should report a bug against the program that doesn't support the
desktop file specification.

and on Cinnamon, Gnome, LXDE, XFCE etc etc Firefox is available as well.

The Debian Menu System predates and it is indipendent from the XDG menu system
that these desktop environments rely upon, and is supported by most of
the packages
in Debian, e.g., by Google's Chrome

$ dpkg -L google-chrome-stable | grep menu
/usr/share/menu
/usr/share/menu/google-chrome.menu
$ cat /usr/share/menu/google-chrome.menu
?package(google-chrome-stable):
   needs="x11"
   section="Applications/Network/Web Browsing"
   hints="Web browsers"
   title="Google Chrome"
   icon="/opt/google/chrome/product_logo_32.xpm"
   command="/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome"
$

but not from the Firefox team...

$ dpkg -L firefox | grep menu
$

all you need is

  1. put the file "firefox.menu" inside "/usr/share/menu", the file's
content should be obvious by comparison with Chrome's
  2. call update-menus in the pre and post install scripts, as specified in
 https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/menu.html/ch4.html

Bug#894357: firefox: no Debian Menu System entry

2018-03-29 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Hello boffi,

What is TWM? The bug you mentioned seems related to it. On Mate, Firefox
is available in Application, Internet.

Best regards,
Alex.

Le 29/03/2018 à 14:34, boffi a écrit :

Package: firefox
Version: 59.0.2-1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?
I clicked on the root menu of TWM and tried to find an entry to launch
Firefox in "Debian/Applications/Network/Web Browsing"

* What was the outcome of this action?
I couldn't see a menu entry to launch Firefox.

* What outcome did you expect instead?
A menu entry to click and launch Firefox.

To quote from www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/menu.html

Chapter 4 - What packages with applications should do

4.1 Providing a menu file
A package should provide a menu file /usr/share/menu/
that contains information about each program it likes to make available
in the menus.

4.2 Adding a hook for dpkg in your packages
The postinst script and the postrm script of the package should include
the line

   if test -x /usr/bin/update-menus; then update-menus; fi

If you are using debhelper, the program dh_installmenu can do it for you.

Thank you in advance

Thank you very much Mike for this.

This implies disabling the switch-window-all keybinding in marco again

Maybe we could propose the shortcut ctrl+win+tab upstream and downstream.
What do you think? Is there a shortcut for that in Metacity or Mutter by

Version: 1.20.0+1
Severity: normal

Hello all,

Since the release of mate-desktop-environment 1.20.0+1 the ctrl+alt+tab
keyboard shortcut has been moved from switch between panel to switch
switch-windows-all.

It's IMO a regression for three reasons:
1) ctrl+alt+tab exists since GNOME2 and is affected on switch between
panels.
2) ctrl+alt+tab is described on the official Mate documentation so
having differences from documentation make things more difficult.
3) All keyboard only users uses ctrl+alt+tab to switch between panels.
It's also the same behavior with Metacity.

The commit introducing the regression :

I've added a proposed patch to do the following things:
- Enable SNI support by default on Mate panel
- Add sni-qt to recommended package of mate-desktop-environment : to
make the SNI support effective, sni-qt has to be installed on the
targeted system.

With this patch, the notification area of Mate becomes fully usable by
keyboard users.

Why do you think mate-desktop should do that, the description is

One of the meta packages should depend on marco.

Yes, it's already the case, mate-desktop is not a meta package. The

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
According to e.g., https://www.mail-archive.com/compiz@lists.launchpad.
net/msg11314.html, the plugin "wall" has a hidden option "nodelay". It
disables the plugin's ability to use the general option "edge delay" to
wait before the edge flip is started.

The first problem is that the default setting is "true", i.e., don't
delay. The user can adjust in CCSM --> General --> General Options -->
Edge Trigger Delay, but will get frustrated as it is ignored by Compiz.

Some users could try to search the internet for solutions. Several
forum posts suggest to edit /usr/share/compiz/wall.xml and change all
instances of true to false.

The second problem is that with the current version this workaround
doesn't even work any more. See e.g., https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu
/+source/compiz/+bug/771463?comments=all.

So please:
  - fix the behavior of the "wall" plugin
  - set the default of nodelay to false

Bug#881099: libatk-adaptor: breaks LibreOffice TexMaths extension

2017-11-08 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Thank Paul for forwarding us this issue.

I'm not sure it is due to libatk-adaptor itself. As I understand of the
a11y stack on GNU/Linux, libatk-adaptor is the bridge between GTK
applications and AT-SPI2. If libatk-adaptor is not installed,
LibreOffice should provide no feedback to assistive technologies. So it
seems it is an issue from LibreOffice itself.

This bug is a forward of Ubuntu bug 1641284¹, that was reported to also exist
in Debian Strech. I have not verified myself, but the report seemed carefully
written.

=

If the package libatk-adaptor is installed on Ubuntu (as a depency of
gnome-orca for example), it breaks down the LibreOffice TexMaths
extension. TexMaths is a popular extension used to enter / edit LaTeX equations
on LibreOffice (see http://roland65.free.fr/texmaths).

Step to reproduce the bug:

1. It is assumed that LibreOffice 5.1.4 (with at least the Writer and Draw
components) is installed on Ubuntu. It is also assumed that libatk-adaptor is
installed.

2. Install texlive:
sudo apt-get install texlive

3. Download and install the TexMaths extension (version 0.42) from there:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/texmaths/files/0.42/

4. Create a new empty Writer document, then click on the Pi icon (this is the
TexMaths icon) and in the window that opens, type: 'x(t)+y(t)' (without the
quotes), then click on the LaTeX button. This generates an SVG image of the
'x(t)+y(t)' equation.

5. Select the SVG image of the equation by left clicking on it. Then click on
the Pi icon. Now, instead of editing the equation, an error message is
displayed: "The selected object is not a TexMaths equation... Please unselect
it and call the macro again...".

6. Now, right click on the SVG image and select the 'Description' menu
voice. In the window that opens, the description is empty and does not contain
the equation text, as it should.

7. Now purge (and not just remove) the libatk-adaptor package:
sudo apt-get purge libatk-adaptor
then logout and login and repeat the steps 4, 5, and 6: everything is OK and
the equation can be edited as usual.

Another way to remove the bug instead of purging libatk-adaptor is to rename
the file: /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90atk-adaptor to
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90atk-adaptor.orig . Then logout and login.

- ---

I forgot to mention that I am the author of the TexMaths extension. Of course,
during my testing there was no other extension installed. The bug occurs in
5.1.x and 5.2.x versions of LibreOffice. I used a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.1 install
for the test, but the bug appears in various Ubuntu flavours too, as many
TexMaths users reported.

You should also consider the other bug I reported
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/at-spi2-atk/+bug/1584795), which
relates LibreOffice and liabatk-adaptor.

These two bugs are 100% reproducibles.

- ---

Bug confirmed on Debian 9 (stretch), too.

Here, libatk-adaptor is installed by default as a dependency of orca und
task-xfce-desktop. So i cannot purge it without breaking my system.

After disabling atk-adaptor
   mv /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90atk-adaptor /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90atk-adaptor.bak
as suggested by Roland65 here
   https://sourceforge.net/p/texmaths/bugs/69/#822d
my TexMaths-Plugin works fine.

Bug#870078: libsane1 breaks all 3rd party scanner drivers

It should be the responsibility of the end user to make sure to buy
hardware from a Linux-friendly manufacturer who is willing to update
their drivers accordingly.

Do you really want that Debian keeps down it's drive to improve quality
and reliability because Ubuntu user X bought a 50 Euro scanner from
some random Chinese manufacturer who cannot be bothered to update their
drivers every once a while?

I don't.

If we expect to make Debian and GNU/Linux universal we have to keep that
people don't want to buy a new hardware to switch from Windows or Mac to
GNU/Linux.
The regular user should be the target, not the hacker. Sane 1.0.27
should work as 1.0.25 for the end user without any configuration changes
because if we respect x.y.z versioning this is a minor release.

I was about to do the same.

Seems like this package can have some love. If anybody can find a patch,
I'll do the (political) work to get it in.

Does an upstream bug exist for this issue ?

Bug#851810: xcalib: "Error - unsupported ramp size 0" when trying to invert screen

2017-10-27 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Dear Chris and all,

A low-vision user has reported to me this issue yesterday. It is a
enormous regression appears on Stretch for a low-vision person that uses
xcalib to inverse the color of his screen.

I've added the a11y tag and raised the severity from normal to important.
I also can't use my computer without color inversion.

Best regards.

Hi,

During summer months I use xcalib to invert colours so I can work on
free software despite the sun reflecting on my laptop's display.

This was working as late as August in Europe but not only do I find
myself in thesouthern hemisphere at the moment, xcalib does not appear
to be working:

 $ xcalib -i
Error - unsupported ramp size 0

 $ echo $?

Bug#877625: libsane1 doesn't provide libsane so it breaks packages depend on libsane

Hello Jorg,

into "debian/control".

No, sane-backends from experimental needs a transition from libsane to
libsane1 and can't use without rebuild all reverse depends.

Sorry, I don't understand what is the process to get sane-backends from
experimental to install it on Debian Jessie ?

Bug#877625: libsane1 doesn't provide libsane so it breaks packages depend on libsane

2017-10-03 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Package: libsane1
Version: 1.0.27-1~experimental2

Dear all,

sane-backends source package generates libsane1 that break libsane. Some
package is based on libsane, on my Debian 8.9 "Jessie" machine it breaks:

*colord
* hplip
* printer-driver-postscript-hp
* simple-scan
* xsane

If libsane1 provides the same API as libsane it could be a good idea to
edit the debian/control to add a "provide" section to indicate that
libsane1 provide libsane. I've attached a patch to add this proposal
into "debian/control".

FYI, I see a version 1.0.27-1~experimental3 in git but not in the
experimental repository.

Best regards.

Bug#853873: fixed in sane-backends 1.0.27-1~experimental1

We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
sane-backends, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.

I've tested the new backend from experimental with libsane 1.0.25-4.1 on
Debian 8.9 Jessie and I always obtain a black image when I perform a
scan with both simple-scan and scanimage.

To be sure I was completely clear:
- I'm using Debian 8.9
- I've got libsane packages from Stretch
- I've upgraded libsane-common from experimental but not libsane1
because it breaks lot of package of the system because it break libsane.
(I've discovered libsane1 after sending the previous message)
