Bug#774603: [wishlist] support iana.org style redirects

2015-01-09 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi Marco,

The problem that I believe implementing this will solve is one of updates.

For example, today I wanted to check an entry in the .bar domain; I am
using a downstream distribution (in my case Linux Mint 17.1), and it has
whois 5.1.1

That version does not know that .bar is a domain, and where it should be
queried. That version is from Jan 2014, and you updated the file in Apr
2014 (
https://github.com/rfc1036/whois/commit/171705cbde06ef350f2e34ae76070a41a681c35f
).

It will probably be a year or more, until the first downstream (Ubuntu in
this case) and then the next downstream (Linux Mint) get an updated version
that does know about the domain.

Which is a shame, since you've put in a lot of time and effort maintaining
whois. A naive user would believe that the program is at fault.

If you implemented this new feature (checking whois.iana.org for
referrals), my immediate problem will not be solved but it will mean that
for future LTS distributions where updates are incorporated only after a
tedious amount of time then whois will "Just Work" with newly delegated
domains.

I still think you should consult your internal database first, just have
IANA's whois as a fallback.

Hope that clears up why I think this would be a nice-to-have feature.

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#774603: [wishlist] support iana.org style redirects

2015-01-04 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: whois
Version: 5.1.1

Hi,

The IANA whois server (whois.iana.org) will issue referrals to all known
domains, whether they are existing gTLDs, ccTLDs or the newer
(whois.nic.).

However, like the DNS, it is not authoritative and simply issues redirects.

It would be nice if whois supported the redirection format -- roughly
".*refer: ([^ ])+$".

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#705644: yate is unable to create a log / pid file

2013-04-17 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: yate
Version: 4.3.0-1~dfsg-1

Hi,

Bug #469729 has a patch which causes start-stop-daemon to set the user to
be 'yate'.

Unfortunately this means that Yate will never create its log files (by
default /etc/log/yate) or pid file (/run/yate.pid) since it will not have
permission to create files in those directories.

Suggestions:
 - revert the patch
 - should those directories have a group called 'daemon', and then all
daemons can have write access to that directory?
 - yate should be patched to create those files, then drop privileges and
the patch removed

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#705643: yate startup script does not have 'status'

2013-04-17 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: yate
Version: 4.3.0-1~dfsg-1

The yate startup script does not have 'status' as one of the allowed
options.

This looks like a generic script, so you might be able to pull in 'status'
from other similar SysV init scripts.

Bug#685452: handle .rdp files and setup connection properly

2012-08-20 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: vinagre
Version: 3.4.2-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

It is becoming increasingly common for Desktop Virtualisation services
to offer out .rdp files (e.g. desktone.com).

The response as served from the webserver is typically
'application/x-rdp' (so, it would also be good if Vinagre indicated in
the desktop file that it supported this mime type).

A typical .rdp file looks like:

$ cat ~/Downloads/firefox/default/remote-access.rdp
screen mode id:i:2
session bpp:i:32
full address:s:184.106.20.146:8005
username:s:myusername
domain:s:MYDOMAIN
compression:i:1
keyboardhook:i:2
audiomode:i:0
autoreconnection enabled:i:0
authentication level:i:0
prompt for credentials:i:1
negotiate security layer:i:1
remoteapplicationmode:i:0
alternate shell:s:
shell working directory:s:
allow desktop composition:i:1
allow font smoothing:i:1
bitmapcachepersistenable:i:1
redirectprinters:i:0
redirectsmartcards:i:0
redirectcomports:i:0
redirectclipboard:i:1
redirectdrives:i:0
disable full window drag:i:0
disable menu anims:i:0
disable themes:i:0
disable wallpaper:i:0
span monitors:i:0
Use Multimon:i:0

constructing a rdesktop command line from this file is not hard, and
will result in a connection to the specified user (or a password
prompt if required).

But it would be even nicer if vinagre Just Worked (tm), which this kind of file.

Regards,
Anand

Bug#685396: better message when picasa is out of space

2012-08-20 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: shotwell
Version: 0.12.3-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

When you import a large number of images, and then publish them,
shotwell does not keep track of which albums they have been published
to.

It would be nice if it did so; this would enable a number of possibilities:

 - knowing which album(s) a photo is stored in
 - optionally not allowing a photo upload to an album to be
re-uploaded (picasa, for example, will duplicate the photo if uploaded
twice)

Thanks,
Anand

Hi,

When your free 1Gb of Picasa storage runs out, attempting to upload
via Shotwell will result in 403 errors.

As the Picasa API docs note, there is a way to determine how much space is left.

https://developers.google.com/picasa-web/faq#quota

It would be great if Shotwell could look at this information and
indicate if the quote was all used up.

Bug#210969: closed by Thorsten Glaser (cvs export also exports .cvsignore files)

2011-05-07 Thread Anand Kumria
reopen 210969
thanks,

Hi Thorsten,

Whilst it may be repository data, secondly. It is *primarily*
repository metadata since it causes files within a working directory
to not be considered by the CVS program.

Therefore it should not be exported for that reason.

That said, I do not think anyone is seriously using (or developing)
CVS anymore. So you should just mark this as wontfix.

Thanks,
Anand

No, I don't read the pkg-voip list; abut I just checked and I can't see
anything from Diana since November.

Thanks for pointing that out. I though, I've added additional dependancies
on zlib1g and libssl-dev to the package I am uploading to Ubuntu.

partially upgrade them to a testing release. Will these packages work on
Debian 5.0?

Bug#578227: add support for FIFOs to aftpd

2010-04-18 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: atftpd
Version: 0.7.dfsg-9

Hi,

This is a wishlist bug to add support for FIFOs to the base atftpd package.

Basically the program opsi (and it's various daemon) use atftpd and
they have a specific patch which adds support for atftpd to read what
it should do via a FIFO. This means that a computer can be instructed
to rebuild, perform a hardware / software inventory or re-install
itself mostly remotely.

The patch is at (and also attached);

http://download.uib.de/atftpd/atftpd-0.7.dfsg-fifo.patch

I have read through the patch and, so as FIFOs are not being used,
this does not change the functionality of atftpd at all.

And the portion that looks for, and uses the FIFO also looks good.

This will make opsi a lot easier to install for Debian and derived
distributions.

Thanks,
Anand

Hmm, it might be Firefox not working in my case. But even when trying
via telnet, it does not seem to be:

Server: Apache
Location: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=558234
[...]

But putting in a '#' does not result in the same redirection:

eve:[~]% telnet bugs.debian.org 80
Trying 206.12.19.114...
Connected to bugs.debian.org.
Escape character is '^]'.

I think the later get should work the same as the first.

Bug#563690: Changing of yum url in debian package

Hi Gerhadus,

Thanks - I've filed it as a bug with the Debian package (CC'd).
However I do not think that the information page for the package as it
was released with Etch will be updated -- unless some kind of security
incident warrants it.

Etch is likely to be available until the end of this year, from memory.

Subject: Outdated url for yum debian package
To: wildf...@progsoc.org

Hi Anand,
You are currently listed as mainainer on the
http://packages.debian.org/etch/yum page.

I am currently doing a documentation refresher for yum and also
updating old urls.

The link: http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/ has changed and is now
http://yum.baseurl.org. There is a working redirect in place but it
would be great if you could change the url officially.

Best Regards

Bug#563030: Fwd: allow # in shortcut URL

2009-12-29 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: bugs.debian.org

Hi,

It would be nice if both:

bugs.debian.org/558234

and

bugs.debian.org/#558234

worked. I realise that '#' is a fragment identifer in URLs but
sometimes copying and pasting from a changelog includes the '#', this
would make things nicer.

Regards,
Anand

Bug#529563: roundcube: please do not send email contents to google by default

2009-05-19 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: roundcube
Version: 0.2.1-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

By default, roundcube is configured to send the contents of email to Google
(via the googiespell service). However it can
use php5-pspell if installed. Which means that the Debian package could depend
on php5-pspell and modify the main.inc.php
template appropriately.

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#513842: xen-utils-common: please make pygrub available

2009-02-01 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: xen-utils-common
Version: 3.2.0-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

It would be very useful it /usr/bin/pygrub was available -- it should be a
symlink (or wrapper) that points to the real version in the Xen hypervisor.

That would mean that the domain configuration for xen domains could be
(relatively) static when upgrades are occuring between hypervisor versions.

Thanks,
Anand

What about using the group 'admin' and mapping that to 'Domain Admins' then?

The reason I seperated it out is, as per the example document, but
that often your Unix admins do not correspond to your Windows admin.

But your Unix users often do correspond to your Windows users.

Bug#508238: pulseaudio: audio sink is suspended incorrectly

2008-12-08 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 0.9.13-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

After playing audio via Rhythmbox for random amounts of time, it would lock up.

I have started running pulseaudio by invoking 'pulseaudio -v -v' and during one
of the lock-ups I noticed:

I: protocol-native.c: Connection died.
I: module-suspend-on-idle.c: Sink alsa_output.pci_8086_24c5_alsa_playback_0
idle for too long, suspending ...
I: module-alsa-sink.c: Device suspended...

It seems that pulseaudio is suspended the output sink, and causing rhythmbox to
hang.

This did not happen in the past.

Anand

Hi,

Could you please modify rtorrent so that it prefers encryption by default?

In the file src/main.cc, line 408. s/prefer_plaintext/try_outgoing/

Since 'enable_retry' is set, plaintext will occur as necessary. This protects
Debian users
using rtorrent from potential interference by parties not involved in the
torrent.

Thanks,

Bug#504193: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#504193: /usr/bin/nm-applet: unable to configure VPN

2008-11-01 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi Michael,

Thank you for letting me know. I am currently using the available
plugins in experimental and unstable.

If these do not work with network manager 0.7, would it make sense
with versions less than a specific version?

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#503682: network-manager-gnome: partial upgrade do not work

2008-10-27 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: network-manager-gnome
Version: 0.6.6-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

I have upgrade to network manager in experimental, as part of that the various
libnm libraries
have been upgraded to version 0.7.x

However neither network-manager, nor network-manager-gnome (part of
network-manager-applet) were upgraded.

This meant that the applet did not start. Manually starting it revealed:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ which nm-applet
/usr/bin/nm-applet
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nm-applet
nm-applet: symbol lookup error: nm-applet: undefined symbol:
dbus_method_dispatcher_new

This is similar to launchpad bug #193964; I think the solution is to have the
various libnm components conflict
with network-manager-* < 0.7 so that partial upgrades are not possible.

Without the conflict in place, it is not possilbe to start network-manager and
thus connect to the Internet (hence the severity).

Thanks,
Anand

2008-10-05 Thread Anand Kumria
Some further investigation reveals that the problem is the stylesheet
associated with the docbook2man command.

Curses.Blickenlights

Should not be upper-cased.

John, you may want to modify the source docbook.sgml appropriately and
then raise a bug on docbook2man.

Package: offlineimap

The offlineimap package offers a number of different UIs.

They are all instantiated as Python classes; so the description in the manual

For example it should be:

 -u Curses.Blinkenlights
 -u TTY.TTYUI
 -u Noninteractive.Basic
 -u Noninteractive.Quiet
 -u Machine.MachineUI

in the man page rather than all in upper-case.

Bug#496871: linux-2.6: please change the PREEMPT settings

2008-08-27 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: linux-2.6
Severity: normal

Hi,

Bugs #292061 and #311185 are contradictory. One asks for it to be disabled, the
other enabled.

I spoke with Simon Horman and he said:

horms, why doesn't the debian linux kernel set preempt to on?
 wildfire: nfi
i believe back in my day it was too experimental
but i have no idea why it is still off

We also checked a few other distributions:
Ubuntu (feisty): CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y/CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y
RHEL 5.1: CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y, CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y
master.kernel.org: CONFIG_PREEMPT_NOTIFIERS=y,
CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y

(all machines are either ia64 or x86_64)

So the censensus would seem to be to set:

CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_NOTIFIERS=y (already set in Debian)

Could you please make it so, and close out the two above-mentioned reports?

Thanks,
Anand

Next you'll be telling me they upstream have always decided the best
locations for files on the filesystem.

Yes, you should certainly ask upstream. But upstream is not always right.

Just as the people who package things can not know everything about
the software (e.g. disabling root on the Debian samba packages for
many years -- this bug report is from 2004, after all).

Or, alternatively:

Andrew, since a nmbd which is advertising itself as a time server has
no effect if the samba process is not also the domain master browser
or the local master browser -- is there an issue with turning this
option on for Debian?

Thanks,
Anand

thanks,

Hi Noèl,

Please note that you have two different upstreams (Andrew Bartlett and
Peter E) *disagreeing* over whether or not
the time server setting should be specified.

Upstream has not decieded at all.

Bug#493107: /etc/nagios3/commands.cfg references wrong package

2008-07-31 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: nagios3
Version: 3.0.3-2
Severity: minor

Hi,

/etc/nagios3/commands.cfg references 'check-host-alive' as being in the
package 'nagios-plugins' package.

It is actually stored in /etc/nagios-plugins/config/ping.cfg which is
part of the package 'nagios-plugins-base' (generated at install time).

Bug#435483: The bazaar package name is confusing and would be best renamed to 'baz'

2008-06-25 Thread Anand Kumria
Yes - I think it should be renamed.

I think the transition steps should be:
 - this release: have bazaar depend upon bzr
 - next release: have a baz package, and a pseudo package that depends
upon both 'baz' and 'bzr'
 - next release++: remove the bazaar package

2008-06-17 Thread Anand Kumria
Upstream, Robert Collins, actually request that bazaar depend on bzr
so that anyone inadvertedly 'apt-get'ing that bazaar had the newer
version.

Rather than remove -- even thought the package is buggy and
unmaintained -- I think a better way forward would be to add a
depends: bzr for the next Debian release and then in future releases
have bzr, Provide: bazaar as a virtual package.

Robert, care to make it so?

Bug#486286: /etc/apache2/sites-available/default: Put NameVirtualHost in ports.conf and correct the syntax

2008-06-14 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: apache2.2-common
Version: 2.2.8-5
Severity: normal
File: /etc/apache2/sites-available/default

Hi,

Currently if you want to use NameVirtualHost you have to have enabled
the 'default' site that ships with the package. Whilst many sites will
be okay with that, it would be more useful if 'NameVirtualHost *:80'
was located in ports.conf.

As well, you could also then have 'NameVirtualHost *:443' in ports.conf
so that SSL SNI (Server Name Indication) would work, eventually, work
"out of the box".

One other change you need to do if you do these suggested changes is
change the virtualhost syntax in 'default' to be:

Otherwise you get this error message:
[Sun Jun 15 09:36:10 2008] [error] VirtualHost *:80 -- mixing * ports
and non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not supported,

Bug#483438: dhcpd: no mechanism to use appropriate reverse zone

2008-05-28 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: dhcp3-server
Version: 3.1.1-1
Severity: normal
File: dhcpd

Hi,

I have a /24 split at two sites with reverse DNS appropriate partitioned
so that half (e.g. 192.168.7.0/25 and 192.168.7.128/25 -- used for
illustration btw not the actual IP addresses) is in zone:

0-25.7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

and the other is in:

128-25.7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

There appear no way to have the DHCP daemon update the correct reverse
zone. It will always try to update 7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

Unfortunately setting ddns-rev-domainname does not help as that only put
a suffix on the reversed IP address. Nor does attempting to turn the
option into an evaluation expression like:

ddns-rev-domainname concat(binary-to-ascii(10, 8, ".", suffix(leased-address,
1)), "0-25.7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.");

Since DHCP expects either a parameter or declaration.

Thanks,
Anand

Obviously:
- if the format if supported, then why can it not determine the

- I think there is a library error here -- when sweep attempts

Erik, let me know if you need the file (48Mb) or just a segment of it
and I'll send it to you out-of-band.

Bug#478066: /etc/init.d/exim4: update-exim4.conf complains incorrectly

The code has:

perhaps it should be;

Bug#474338: python2.4: python stats unnecessary directories

2008-04-04 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: python2.4
Version: 2.4.5-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I was trying to locate where a particular Python package was on disk --
the quickest way I could think of was doing:

strace -eopen python -c 'import foo'

When I did that, I noticed a number of directories mentioned that will
never exist on Debian (or, even Linux) being stat'd.

eve:[~]% strace -eopen python -c 'import foo' 2>&1 | head -15

open("/usr/lib/python2.4/site.py", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 3
open("/usr/lib/python2.4/site.pyc", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 4

Obviously /usr/lib/python24.zip is not required. Removing this directory
may make Python startup faster.

Thanks,
Anand

I don't think so.

I'm interested importing the upstream tarball, warts and all.

Then I can create a branch of 'upstream' called 'dfsg-upstream', with
the warts corrected.

So I don't think there should be any mechanism to strip out directory
levels, any cleanup should be done in the revision control system.

Cheers,

Feel free to grab what is in the archive and work from that -- I have
nothing pending in my local repositories.

Do you which version / python packages? I think it is important to
ensure that OLPC can be easily simulated on Debian machines to further
assist developers targetting that platform.

Bug#462045: samba: automagically add initial set of domain groups

2008-01-21 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: samba
Version: 3.0.28-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

Currently the default Samba install assumes you wish to either be a PDC
or a standalone server (things could be setup so it asks you if Samba
shluld be a BDC or Domain member, but there are not).

In either case the following Windows groups need to exist:

- Domain Admins
- Domain Users
- Domain Guests

Each of these groups has a well-known Unix group equivalent, (ntadmins,
users and nogroup) respectively.

It would be good if:

- these Unix groups (ntadmins, users and nogroup) were added if
  they went not present.

- these mappings were automatically added into Samba
(net groupmap add ntgroup="Domains Admins" unixgroup="ntadmins"
rid=512 type=d, etc.)

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#462046: samba: root is a valid user

2008-01-21 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: samba
Version: 3.0.28-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

I've now spent a very frustrating amount of time[1] trying to diagnose a
failure to add a machine to a domain. The problem is that root is marked
is an 'invalid user', which does not allow it add machines.

I am at a loss to understand why root is marked as an 'invalid user' in
the default shipped configuration. It does not make things any more
secure. It does cause extra work (everyone who wants root to be valid
has to modify the configuration; everyone who wants to some other user
must modify things; everyone who want privileges has to modify the
configuration) -- every class of user has to modify the configuration,
for standlone servers they are negatively nor positively impacted by
having "invalid user = root" in the configuration.

Please remove "invalid users = root" from the default configuration.

Thanks,
Anand

[1]: Joining a domain is such an uncommon operation, (for me, every 5 -
10 months) that I tend to forget what the fix is/was. Invariably I'm on
a new machine and things are failing. I've wasted at least 30 hours of
my life debugging this misconfiguration.

I'd like to take over this package. It's a shame that it was
in badly shape and not shipped with etch.
I'll look to see if it is better suited for volatile than main
(beta version, I mean).

Anyway co-maintainers are, as always, welcome; if Anand Kumria
(Cc:ed here) will come back, I hope we will work fine together.

I'm still in NM (I hope to get my account activated soon), so I
will need a temporary sponsor for this.

Ciao, Luca

Bug#412376: pulseaudio: cause a crash & burn in other applications

2007-02-25 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 0.9.5-5
Severity: important

Hi,

I've (recently) converted much of my system to use PulseAudio.
Unfortunately, I have occassionally come across a few programs that
simply do not play well with PulseAudio taking control of things.

Sometime, that means that I kill the PulseAudio -- when that happens, it
takes down other programs as well:

eve:[~]% iceweasel
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to create stream.
[...]
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to create stream.
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection terminated
[...]
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection terminated
zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) iceweasel

I'm not sure which part of PulseAudio is causing the problem here,
but I'd be happy to assist in debugging if anyone would care to point
me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Anand

Installing gstreamer0.10-gnonlin fixed the problem, so I believe it

There are only two you need to worry about; .desktop files and the menu
system. Arguably it is a bug that the menu system requires xpm(s) but
that is something for maintainer of packages having issues (like
yourself) should raise.

Cheers,
Anand

Bug#398820: wpasupplicant: WPA works but WEP key do not

2006-11-15 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: wpasupplicant
Version: 0.5.5-2
Severity: important

Hi,

This bug is similiar to #361425 but since I uses a much newer version of
wpasupplicant (which has this fix apparently), I'm reporting this as a
new bug.

I use the ipw2200 driver (from 2.6.18-rc2) and with the following in
/etc/network/interface I can intermittedly associate but never get an IP
address allocation via DHCP:

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid MyWiFi
wpa-psk ABACADAEAF
up ifmetric wlan0 1

However, if I use this instead, everything Just Works:

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-ssid MyWiFi
wireless-mode Managed
wireless-key1 ABACADAEAF
up ifmetric wlan0 1

Let me know what, if anything, you want me to test. I'm unsure where to
begin and/or what I might need to provide.

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#396808: pan: when writing a message, upon reaching the end of line, the next two characters are typo'd

2006-11-02 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: pan
Version: 0.113-1

Hi,

I've just been composing a message. For the first few times when I'd
reach the end-of-line, Pan would wrap my text onto the next line, and I
thought I was just have a bad typing day - inconviently at EoL. The
text for, say, 'hello' (typing at the end of the line), would appear as:

hle

The first two characters 'he' would appear correctly at the end of the
line; and the third character causes the wrap and the last two to be
transposed.

I'm not able to read the PDF file using evince hence the severity.

Bug#396106: /bin/df: alignment differences in df

2006-10-29 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: coreutils
Version: 5.97-5
Severity: minor
File: /bin/df

Hi,

'df -h' and 'df -H' differ slightly in their alignment, to wit:

eve:[~]% df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 6.5G 4.6G 1.9G 72% /
udev 10M 56K 10M 1% /dev
devshm498M 0 498M 0% /dev/shm

/dev/hda1 6.9G 4.9G 2.0G 72% /

devshm 522M 0 522M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/hda6 70G68G 1.1G 99% /home

It seems there is an extra space ahead of 'Size', 'Used' and 'Avail'
when 'df -H' is used.

It'd be nice if both could be made to match.

Thanks,
Anand

2006-10-23 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: cogito

Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/cg-mv

Hi,

I'm trying to move a set of files from one location to another. In one
branch the files exist as css/{filename} and in the other as
website/css/{filename}.

In the first branch, the direct website/css exists on disk but does NOT
exist in the git index. However there isn't any indication / warning
that that isn't possible using cg-mv (it should be allowed IMO).

Below is the full trace.

Bug#394445: gaim: crash when connecting to MSN

2006-10-21 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: gaim

Hi,

After upgrading to beta4, gaim began crashing. I traced this to my MSN
account - here is the backtrace I enabled (after pulling in gaim-dbg and
running: LD_DEBUG=/usr/lib/debug gdb --args gaim

Let me know if there is further data required.

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#338319: not draining entrophy is a good thing

2006-10-16 Thread Anand Kumria

Hi,

I've also stumbled over this problem in the past few days.

The simplest fix, that should stop exim4 from blocking is to make
gnutls-bin a Depend rather than a Suggest. This would make the
re-generation of dh_params less likely to block the system from
continuing.

However that only alleviates the first problem. It would be useful if
the severity of bug#347210 was important.

As noted a by number of other people, a build of exim4 with openssl
does not suffer from entrophy exhaustion so quickly. It is isn't clear
to me why gnutls (via libgcrypt as I understand it) is depleting the
pool so rapidly.

Users can basically exhaust entrophy on my servers just by sending a
large (2MiB) email, which causes them pain because mail (delivery,
submission, etc.) is held up until enough activity has occurred to
generate further entrophy.

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#388864: Stop! Wait!

2006-10-15 Thread Anand Kumria

Hello,

On 10/4/06, Lennart Poettering <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hi!

I am not that happy with the suggested postinst script.

Two things:

First, please use "mdns4" and "mdns4_minimal" modules instead of
"mdns" and "mdns_minimal". Why? Because many broken programs (one of

Lennart's suggestions break network setups.

Network A: perfectly setup zeroconf network.

Network B: badly setup corporate site, which uses .local as the last
part of zonecut. That is, resources have names like
mailserver.corporate.local

Lennart's "solution" (in a private email exchange) was to have the
user install/uninstall libnss-mdns as required.

Let's make network B a, say, public wireless access point.

You can't know - in advance - whether or not any particular network is
setup correctly.

them being "telnet") do host name lookups in a broken way: they first
try an ipv6 lookup and if that fails fall back to ipv4. In mDNS host

Option 1: break network setups

Option 2: induce a 10 second delay for people who mis-type a resource name.

Unfortunately do neither Avahi nor Apple Bonjour register both ipv6
and ipv4 addresses by default.

Incorrect. Apple register zeroconf entries with both A and
records. Check the bonjour-dev mailing list. From memory, I started a
thread about this issue.

The ideal line has to look like this:

  hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

Wrong. Breaks interoperability.

I strongly suggest following this advice of mine. To my knowledge this
line is nearly "optimal". I know that Anand Kumria doesn't really
follow me in my argumentation and added some misleading documentation
to README.Debian. However, I am very unhappy with this situation.

The documentation is not misleading. You are simply misinformed about
this, and despite my repeated efforts, do not appear to understand the
problem.

Yes, it is a pity that we cannot add proper out-of-the-box support for
IPv6 to our zeroconf stack. But humm, that's the situation we have to
deal with.

No - avahi could register each name with both A and records. I
haven't checked whether it does or does not. If not, I'd argue it is a
bug.

Anyway, the reason I didn't comment earlier is because your initial
patch was fine. This one isn't.

Bug#393029: bind9: filter out specific IP addresses which should never appear

2006-10-14 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: bind9
Version: 1:9.3.2-P1-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

This follows on from #393003, it adds another ACL (bogons) and denies
service to any of the IP addresses listed within.

This is a very minimal list of network ranges; they are all from
RFC3330.

Cheers,
Anand

Bug#393003: bind9: don't allow recursion by default (for untrusted networks)

2006-10-14 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: bind9
Version: 1:9.3.2-P1-2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

By default the bind9 server shipped as part of Debian allow DNS
recursion for any client who happens to contact it. I have been, and
likely others have as well, subjected to DoS attacks via DNS recursion
(there are plenty of references to it).

Anyway it would be good to fix this for Debian users.

The way to do this is by having two views, an internal and an external
one. For the internal view, you use an ACL to determine who can and who
can not.

Attached is an initial named.conf.acls file and a diff to named.conf to
make this all happen.

All of this information was gleaned from:
http://www.cymru.com/Documents/secure-bind-template.html

Thanks,
Anand

Bug#388759: aiccu: Should be in main

And two months later there is not a single reply of the maintainer, so
aiccu is stuck in non-free for Etch. Heh.

Correct. It will be in non-free unless clause 5 is fixed in the licence.

So,

1. The *new* version of their licence has an IETF "should" clause.

2. The clarification (when written) was specific to Debian; so that
violated Social Contract #8.

Having read:

I can see the clarification is now actually mentioned in their LICENCE
as opposed to being just an email. So this comes down to whether or
not I believe their clarification overrules the actual text of the
licence.

In light of the email exchange between Jereon and yourself -- and his
"attitude" -- I'm inclined to be highly conservative, and this I do
not believe Pim's clairification override the licence.

I say this on the basis that I actually *did* let Jeroen know what I
was doing. He, like me, was obviously fairly busy, and I take silence
as consent.

Anand, are you MIA? Then please set the vacation flag in the database. I
see occasional reportbug activity in Echelon, but no PGP activity since
2006-08-13.

No, I'm not MIA - I'm just busy. Very busy with a startup that
launches on the 20th of this month.

Echelon is not as a good an indicator of activity as you might believe
-- it appears it's ability to detect activity on the basis of bug
reports and mailing list postings isn't working as well it could.

Hi,

By setting:

set ssl_ca_certificates_file=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt

in /etc/Muttrc (and if the administrator has ca-certificates) installed,
users will get the right certificates setup.

Users are able to override/add to this list by placing entries in
~/.mutt/certificates (default for certificate_file) should they wish.

This would make security Just Work for the majority of users once their
administrator has inserted a certificate file.

Bug#391632: dovecot: LDA configuration section in config file

2006-10-07 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: dovecot
Version: 1.0.rc7-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

The LDA section appears to be repeated in the configuration file and
it seems to not work with the configured section 'auth default' socket
section as listed in the file.

In this case I think the 'auth default' socket section should be fixed
up. It would be very handy to have this fixed up so that no one else has
to spend time (~30 mins in my case) wondering why using the dovecot
delivery LDA won't work out of the box on Debian but does elsewhere.

Thanks,
Anand
