Bug#702401: Documentation for configurable text export is outdated

2013-03-13 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
By the way, if you check the documentation of the File Menu in the Menus
section of the Gnumeric Manual , you find:

Save As... — The Save As... menu item allows users to save a file which
has not yet been named to a named file. This is always used when a user
saves a file which Gnumeric has named by default. This menu item can
also be used to save a newly created file or to save an existing file to
a new and different name. To export data from Gnumeric to a
non-spreadsheet format, use the Data menu described in The Data Menu.
For an explanation of the file formats which Gnumeric supports see
Saving Files.

You are of course right that the configurable-text-export section itself
has not yet been updated.

Bug#687729: fcitx: makes gnumeric cursor keys edit (and delete) instead of navigate

2012-09-18 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
A general statement such as
Custom GTK widget are very likely to have bad behavior.
is obviously utter nonsense.

It seems that fcitx is leaking keystrokes to Gnumeric. That is not a
Gnuemric bug. Input methods such as fcitx are required to be invisible
to any application.

Bug#666699: Debian Bug report logs - #666699

2012-04-04 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
This partially depends on the version you are using. In 1.10.x you would
choose save as and specify the file type you want to save as at the
bottom of that dialog. You may notice you can even select various
versions of html.

In 1.11.x you would select data-export but you still have to choose the
file type at the bottom of the dialog.

Gnumeric has 14 different export formats (beside the 9 save as formats).
It really makes more sense for you to select them in the above dailog
rather than having a huge menu.

Gnumeric does not know the '新細明體' font and so has to guess the
character widths. We obviously are guessing slightly wrong. so that's
why the times are wrapped onto a second line.

Without knowing the correct character widths, Gnumeric has no way of
knowing what the author intended.

Bug#662877: gnumeric: IFERROR saved in formats that do not recognise it

2012-03-07 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
Gnumeric does not write OpenOffice files. We write files in Open
Document Format version 1.2 and IFERROR is defined in that standard.
OpenOffice may only implement a subset of ODF 1.2.

In any case, ODF 1.2 also defines how to save additional functions and
we are doing that according to the standard for any functions not
defined there.

Moreover IFERROR(X,Y) is not equivalent to IF(ISERROR(X),Y,X). Since the
latter evaluates X twice, potentially yielding different values.

Note: the + and - signs may look differently for you (ie. possibly not

Bug#609984: l10n: CSV export should be performed in the C locale

2011-02-22 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
Why does this make the file non-portable? There is no
csv-specification that prefers one over the other.

Gnumeric for example can open either. We assume that files we want to
open are in the current locale. So saving a csv file using the C locale
would mean that we could not open it with the csv importer.

Bug#257945: davs...

2010-01-26 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
The php5.conf file attaches a mime-type via a FileMatch. That appears to
override ForceType.

In php4.conf the extension was mapped to a type. That works fine with
ForceType.

So by usingthe phpo4 version of attaching the extensions to the
mime-type/handler for php5, ForceType works again in the dav setup and
it is trivial to have php files served via dav asif they were text.

See the complex configuration section of
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_dav.html

This is the consequence of a different bug fix. To make your formulas
work you just have to enter them as array functions. (ctrl-shift-enter).

Bug#516645: Some functions not working anymore

2009-02-26 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
This is due to the fix of the array evaluation, see
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=530711
You can fix the calculation by entering the formula involving match as
an array formula, i.e. edit the formula and finish editing by typing
ctrl-shift-enter

that one can do without that menu item then remove the menu item.

There is no way I can use a program in one of my classes that will hang
if a student selects an obvious menu item to run their program.

What would users of gnumeric say if we just ignore crashes with the
comment just don't do that.

Bug#495144: Anjuta hangs on execute program

2008-08-14 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
Subject: anjuta: Anjuta hangs on execute program
Package: anjuta
Version: 2:2.4.2-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I start Anjuta.
I create a new generic C++ project using all defaults except that I
specify an empty directory for the project.
I build the automatically created project.

Up to here everything works as expected. Then I select Execute Program
from the build menu., leaving the in terminal checkbox checked.

A terminal pane appears in teh anjuta windoe but the program output does
not and anjuta becomes completely unresponsive and fails to update teh
display if temporarily covered by another window.

(Note that the compiled binary can be run using anjuta_launcher in a
regular terminal window so the problem should be related to the
execution inside anjuta.

Note that anjuta shows on the console:
** (anjuta:5818): CRITICAL **: on_profile_scoped: assertion `session_dir
!= NULL' failed

and when clsoed without executing the program:

** (anjuta:5818): CRITICAL **: project_manager_save_session: assertion
`session_dir != NULL' failed

 Hello Andreas,

in your initial bugreport http://bugs.debian.org/482623 I can see you
use lenny/sid. Both now have samba/winbind version 3.2.0.

Could you upgrade to this version and tell us if you can reproduce the
 problem again?

With the new version (3.2.0-4) everything seems to be working fine.

Thanks!

Andreas

Bug#459647: xpp fails to print multiple copies

2008-01-07 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
Package: xpp
Version: 1.5-cvs20050828-1
Severity: normal

After increasing the number of copies in the spin box on the main page
to 2, still only one copy is being printed.

If I instead insert copies=2 in the Extra Options field of the Job/Other
tab, 2 copies are correctly printed, so this seems to be an xpp issue.

I can successfully print multiple copies with lpr and lp, as well as
from gnumeric which uses gtkprint and therefore also cups.

is still in status NEW though; it should probably be marked as resolved as
 well.

Hi Ray,

Bug 303408 in gnomebugzilla has morphed into a request to allow more
fine grained specification of which formats to move. That request is
still pending.

Thanks

Bug#308068: Sorting does not update hyperlinks

2007-11-05 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
When sorting you can choose whether you like to have formats including
hyperlinks moved or not. (This has been around for a while but maybe not
in version 1.4.3).

To use that feature either use the sort dialog or set the appropriate
sort preference in the preference window.

So this bug is definitely fixed in 1.6.x and later.

Bug#344681: save as TeX feature has problems when using \input and the landscape environment

In 1.7.13 (and some earlier versions) you can export into a latex
fragment. This gives you easy control over the format of your table
since you just input into the body of your table.

This bug should be considered fixed in 1.7.13.

Bug#448445: print preview broken: Unknown option --print-settings in evince

2007-10-31 Thread Andreas J Guelzow
This is really a configuration issue.

Some things to note:
Newer versions of evince understand the --print-settings option
Gnumeric does not pass this option to evince. We just hand-off printing
(and previewing) to Gtk. Gtk then calls the appropriate pdf viewer. WHat
is the appropriate previewer can be configured in
.gtkrc-2.0
located in your home directory.
The important entry is:
gtk-print-preview-command=evince --unlink-tempfile --preview %f
the above line should work for most older versions of evince. Of ocurse
you can also use other programs such as:
gtk-print-preview-command=gv %f
or
gtk-print-preview-command=xpdf -q %f

Note that evince is preferred since gtk creates temporary files and
--unlink-tempfile tells evince to delete them. The otehr commands will
keep those temporary pdf files around.

2007-05-15 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
Package: gdm
Version: 2.18.1-2
Severity: important

We are using gdm in a thin client setup where all users login via xdmcp
into the same machine. Previously users were able to log into the system
via gdm even if they were alreay logged in from another station (after
being warned that they are already logged in). With our most recent upgrade

Bug#309012: 309012

2006-10-07 Thread Andreas J Guelzow
We are experiencing a similar issue and may have some light to shed on
the issue (especially for others that may experience it to).

We are running ltsp thin-clients connecting via xdmcp to a debian
unstable amd64 machine. We occasionally got the same error.

It turned out that the error occurs until some application does
something along the lines of:
xset fp default

That command itself fixed the problem. Since we don't seem to do
anything strange with the fontpath I don't know why this command makes a
dfference but it fixed the problem. (So we inserted it into the R shell
script.)

Bug#359058: fixed in 2.14

2006-09-25 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
In gdm 2.14 one can disable a server by adding 0=inactive in the server
section of /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

This is documented in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf itself.

Bug#354115: bug fix causes problems

2006-08-28 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
On Mon, 2006-28-08 at 19:25 +0200, Santiago Vila wrote:
The reason to remove the line is not that it's no longer used,
the reason is that it's *misleading*.

That could easily be fixed by adding a comment line that the order
line is only used by old versions of the libc library. There is no need
to break old programs.

Now you have a point, some software may break because of this,
but so far the only example happens to be jurassic statically linked
software which is also non-free and proprietary (and of course
Debian does not distribute). I don't feel a lot sorry for this.

This issue has nothing to do with the fact that Mathematica is non-free
and proprietary. The problem would occur with any statically linked
program that happens to use an older version of libc, whether free or
not.

I think this is the kind of problem we should better document, instead
of perpetuating the misleading line. May I suggest that you report
this against the release notes document for etch?

I am not sure how the manual page for /etc/hosts.conf is anymore
misleading now then it was before. I am quoting from the current page:

---
The file /etc/host.conf contains configuration information specific to
the resolver library. It should contain one configuration
keyword per
line, followed by appropriate configuration information. The
keywords
recognized are order, trim, multi, nospoof, spoof, and reorder.
These
   keywords are described below.

order This keyword specifies how host lookups are to be
performed. It
should be followed by one or more lookup methods,
separated by
commas. Valid methods are bind, hosts, and nis.
---

I gather Debian does not care about backwards compatibility.

Bug#354115: bug fix causes problems

2006-08-26 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
To drop the
order bind, hosts
line from /etc/host.conf is very ill advised.

It just took me a large number of hours to track the problem that an
essential (for us) software package stopped working thanks for this
unnecessary bug fix. I call it unnecessary since that line is simply
not used in recent versions of glibc.

This program that failed for us is Mathematica version 4.0. This is a
statically linked program that uses the order line of /etc/host.conf.
(While some in our department have migrated to maxima, several members
are still using Mathematica, and failure to have this run correctly is a
major problem!)

Please don't drop such items with out regard to older pieces of
software!

Bug#344681: save as TeX feature

2006-08-06 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
Gnumeric does not care (nor should it care) whehter you are using
landscape or not. The LaTeX file assumes that \textwidth is set
correctly. This is apparently not the case for your switch to landscape
mode. Would you please verufy that.

Thanks

Bug#292811: There should be an autosave function so less is lost in case of crash

2005-03-19 Thread Andreas J. Guelzow
Gnumeric has an autosave function already. You just need to switch it on
(Tools-Autosave).

You may want to suggest to have AutoSave on by default. This has been
discused at length and the problem is that for some users that may also
lead to dataloss.
