As far as I can tell, this seems to be a duplicate of #879849 (the
libmagickcore...-extra packages lack a dependency on librsvg2-bin),
ie. a bug rather than an intentional change. (The build error occured
despite usbview already build-depending on ...-extra.)

Bug#731916: O: dbmix -- DJ mixer for digital audio streams

2013-12-11 Thread Daniel Kobras

Severity: normal

This package has been dead upstream for ages. I've intended to remove it
from Debian several times, but the code refuses to break even after all
those years. So if you're interested in keeping it alive, feel free to
grab the package.

Regards,

Daniel.

Please remove the noflushd package from unstable. Its most important features
are nowadays provided by the kernel itself, it has issues on recent kernels,
has a low popcon count, and is no longer actively maintained upstream (which
happens to be me :-).

In the spindown mode used by noflushd, spinup should be handled by the
disk/controller itself. The kernel should only notice the same delay as during
any other disk spinup.

> I feel that the noflushd package has its value. Getting further with this bug

The problem at hand is most likely caused by a bug in the kernel, maybe even
one that's only present in squeeze, not in the wheezy kernel. And while
noflushd might still have its merits, it's a fact that it does weird things to
some kernel components and therefore keeps triggering corner-case bugs that
turn out to be extremely hard to debug. Frankly, I'm not sure whether expecting
kernel developers to spend significant time hunting down noflushd fallout is
fair, especially as other interfaces like laptop-mode seem to cover most
people's needs, and noflushd has really grown into a niche application. Feel
free to convince me otherwise, but at the moment, I'm pretty much in favour of
dropping noflushd from Debian altogether.

Daniel.

In upstream version 1.3.17, Bob has implemented a way to encode the quantum

Reading back through the bug report once more, it seems I've initially
overlooked the kernel version: 2.6.32 contained a bug (#594923) when running
noflushd that was only half-fixed in 2.6.32-38, which might have changed the
error pattern and lead to an eventual crash of the system. It is supposed to be
completely fixed starting with 2.6.32-42, as well as in 3.2. Andrea, can you
please check whether you still experience crashes with either of these kernel
version?

The ygraph tool graphs one-dimensional data or displays a time-series of

   * animating multiple plots simultaneously and synchronously;
   * stepping back and forth through animations one frame at a time;
   * zooming, similar to xgraph but without opening a lot of new windows;
   * plotting derivatives;
   * subtracting plots;
   * convergence tests;
   * reading compressed files;
   * exporting images and animations.

Can you correlate the freeze to some event, eg. noflushd trying to spin down a

The prio bump to optional is fine by me. I originally chose extra because the

There are no code-level changes between 1.12.1-3 and 1.12.1-3.2, so this
indeed sounds like a (temporary) toolchain problem. When you upgraded

The packaging issues are easily solvable, actually, by switching from yada to,
say, debhelper. Gramofile is a rather simple package, so this should be a
no-brainer. However, there's http://wiki.debian.org/ReleaseGoals/NoLinuxDevDsp
looming on the horizon, which requires us to add another means of audio output
but OSS to gramofile. Unless significant work is put into a fix for this
problem, gramofile is bound for removal irrespective of the packaging issues. I
figured that gramofile was only of historic value these days, and therefore
suggested to remove the package right away, but from your answer I take it that
there are still users out there, so we might well reconsider.

switching to libltdl-dev looks correct on current sid.
I guess this change would do the trick for derived distributions as well?

Thanks for the report. I'll look into the problem. I guess you checked with a

Unfortunately, the GraphicsMagick build does not currently support

Building two different sets of configure options shouldn't cause too

Why should libdv pull in alsa-base when it only supports OSS? It's legacy code,
so most likely upstream will never support any other sound system. We could of
course just demote the Recommends to a Suggests, meaning that most libdv users
won't be able to record sound by default.

Hi!

mpg123 1.12.1-3 fixes a problem playing mp3 streams from the web, leading to
choppy or corrupted output. No Debian bug was filed, but I consider the fix
important enough to make it into the next stable release. The patch is taken
from upstream version 1.12.3, the small debdiff to the version in testing is
attached. Please unblock.

I've updated my devel machine to the latest kernel version, and now I can
reproduce the problem. It's not the fsync(), actually, but but the stopping of
the pdflush daemon that makes the flush-: kernel threads enter a
busy loop (spinning in bdi_writeback_task()). It can be triggered as simple as:

echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs

(Use echo 500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs to restore a sane
behaviour.) Suspending pdflush activity this way used to work before. Now it
seems to be interpreted as a zero wait time between iterations in the flush
threads. Thus, I'd say this is a regression in the kernel.

Daniel.

This is intended behaviour: The kernel's usual background flushing cannot be
turned off selectively for individual drives. Therefore, as soon as noflushd
has decided to spin down the first disk, it completely suspends the kernel's
flushing process, and mimicks its function by fsync()ing the drives it
considers as still running. This is done at the configured frequency of the
kernel's flushing process (usually once every five seconds). This is what's
going on in the strace you sent in.

Now, when you spin down a disk via hdparm, noflushd doesn't get to know
immediately and still tries to sync the drive. The fsync() calls seem to kick
off the flush threads in the kernel, but those seem to be unable to trigger a
spinup of the drive. (noflushd itself never cares about spinup. It uses a
standby mode that makes the drive spin up all by itself whenever a new command
arrives.)

If you want to handle spindown for some of the drives all by yourself, you can
make use option -r to essentially tell noflushd to leave this drive alone (no
fsync() calls, even if the drive is still spinning).

Hmmm, so the drive's internal spinup does seem to work, after all, but not
for write requests. Are you using laptop-mode as well?

Daniel.

You are correct. Therefore I'm raising the severity to grave. I need to
implement a new methode spindown_ata using the SG_IO interface instead of the
old IDE ioctl()s. I've just checked the hdparm source code, and the simple
tasks noflushd needs to perform require a bit more code than I was hoping, but
it's certainly doable without problems. The second thing that needs to be done
is way to determine when to use the SG_IO interface. I certainly want to avoid
spinning down a SCSI disk that won't spin up by itself afterwards. Still needs
to investigate here.

Daniel.

Could you please try to get hold of the full command line typo3 is using, and
also make available one of the original images used as input when the problem

With drum.mp3, I'm now also seeing the segfault in an i386 chroot. amd64 is
still fine. Building the Debian package with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noharden (ie.
without CFLAGS "-Wformat -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fstack-protector -fPIE" and
LDFLAGS "-Wl,-z,relro -pie") prevents the crashes. However, I'm not sure
whether we really reproduce Gregor's original problem because for me, and
unhardened mpg123 always terminates normally even with hardened libmpg123 and
output plugin (dummy), and a hardened mpg123 always crashes, even with
unhardened libmpg123 and output plugin. In contrast, Gregor states that he
could cure the crashes by changing to a different libmpg123.

Anyway, this means that there is either a toolchain bug on i386 in one of the
hardening options, or a bug in mpg123 that usually goes unnoticed and is only
uncovered in a hardened build. I haven't managed to drill down any further so
far. Needless to say that mpg123 doesn't segfault anymore as soon as it's run
in valgrind.

Daniel.

Starting mpg123 as "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/mpg123 mpg123 (...)" is a

Hi!

DSA 1958 introduced a libtool update that would no longer add the current
working directory to the library search path (CVE-2009-3736). This broke the
mpg123 version in lenny which chdir()s to its plugin directory and relies on
the previous libtool behaviour to find its output modules. Therefore, I'd like
to ask for permission to upload a new version of mpg123 to proposed-updates
that fixes the regression. Debdiff is attached.

Thanks a lot for looking into this. I'll grab the patch from HEAD and add
it to the next upload of the Debian package.

This looks like #560232, which is already fixed upstream in 1.3.9.

Perfect! I've just received the note that tranceroute-nanog has been removed

Bug#568316: Please provide upgrade path from traceroute-nanog

Package: traceroute
Version: 2.0.11-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi Daniel!

In #568314, I've requested removal of the traceroute-nanog package from
unstable as its functionality nowadays is adequately or even better provided
by the nanog wrapper script in traceroute. Once the traceroute-nanog source
package is gone, could you please add a dummy package to traceroute to
provide an upgrade path? Also, alternatives handling can be dropped for the
nanog wrapper and its man page.

Daniel.

Bug#568314: RM: traceroute-nanog -- ROM; superseded by traceroute

Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

traceroute-nanog seems to be no longer developed upstream, suffers from
FHS problems (#557672), and cannot properly handle IPv6 sockets (#405710).
The traceroute package nowadays includes a nanog compatibility script that
should be sufficient for most practical use cases. Please remove
traceroute-nanog from unstable.

Daniel.

cc32.ico contains an alpha channel, which gm tries to preserve during the
conversion. xli and gqview cannot handle RGBA data in XPM files, apparently. I
still need to check whether this is a bug in the mentioned apps, or whether XPM
are required to be opaque. (The xpm coder in GraphicsMagick explicitly handles
transparency, which makes me suspect that RGBA is allowed. On the other hand,
the current ImageMagick explicitly disables all transparency for XPM. I'll try
to find a definitive source to decide which one is correct.) In the meantime,
if you use "convert +matte cc32.ico colorcode32.xpm", both implementations
will yield consistent results.

Daniel.

This quick addition unfortunately creates an ABI change that isn't
automatically reflected in the SONAME, and therefore shouldn't be applied all
by itself. In Ubuntu, you've been running with this change for enough releases
to just not bother anymore, I guess. For Debian, it's probably time to finally

It turns out that mpg123_noise is only present when dithering is enabled. In
Debian, apart from i386 and amd64 no other arch turns on this feature at the
moment. This bug could be fixed using configure flag --with-cpu=generic_dither
on these archs, or simply by adjusting the arch-specific symbols files, but I'd
like to check with upstream first whether the symbol is really meant to be
exported in the first place.

Thanks for the report. The patch you referred to looks wrong, though, as
consumers can still clobber the pointers of the Pool-internal free list for idx
0 (which apparently isn't used at the moment, but might be in the future). It
probably also suffers from alignment problems on non-Intel archs. The attached
version should be a bit more robust. It works for me on amd64. Can you maybe
give it a stress test as well?

Solving this properly is actually a bit tricky as the traceroute package
that shares its alternatives with traceroute-nanog doesn't suffer from the
root-only restriction these days, and it would be rather confusing to
handle the alternatives in /usr/sbin different from /usr/bin. I'm tempted
to sidestep this issue by letting traceroute supersede the nanog variant
for good, and simply drop the -nanog package from Debian. Daniel, what's
the status of the nanog emulation in traceroute proper these days? Are you
aware of any relevant features still missing?

Bug#530946: [SA35216] ImageMagick "XMakeImage()" Integer Overflow Vulnerability

2009-06-01 Thread Daniel Kobras
Hi!

Just to publicly scribble down my notes so far:

* The patch from IM upstream relies on bytes_per_line*depth not
overflowing. Need to check whether XShmCreateImage() indeed provides
us with such a guarrantee. (And if there is, does
  bytes_per_line*height indeed present a problem?)
* Likewise, GM 1.3.5 already has code in place to prevent the second of
the three overflows fixed in the original patch, but relies on the
  same assumptions.
* A test case would be great.

I've just uploaded graphicsmagick 1.3.5-5 with a sanitised
GraphicsMagick-config. Unfortunately, psiconv still fails to build with
this version because it apparently makes use of a prehistoric and long
deprecated API function. It doesn't really make sense to schedule
another bin-NMU until this is problem fixed with a psiconv upload.

I've only briefly looked into this problem so far. Actually, I'd prefer
to see psiconv change from the (deprecated) Magick-config to pkgconfig.
I'm tempted to remove GraphicsMagick-config completely, and only provide
Magick-config in the -dev-compat package. It still needs tweaked --cflags
to prevent build failures, of course (and an update to the man page
that correctly documents --cflags as "Print the compiler flags that were
used to compile libMagick").

One way or another, I'll see to get the packages in shape to complete
the transition later tonight.

Daniel.

Bug#521621: lintian: [checks/shared-libs] SONAME must be quoted in regex.

2009-03-28 Thread Daniel Kobras
Package: lintian
Version: 2.2.8
Severity: normal

Hi!

Library packages containing a plus sign in their names always trigger
lintian check "symbols-declares-dependency-on-other-package". This is
because of a bug in the parser for symbols files: It doesn't strip the
SONAME from the input line if it contains a character that has special
meaning in regular expressions. Quoting these characters in the string
before applying the regex fixes the test. Patch against lintian 2.2.8
is attached. Please apply.

sbuild's "chroot does not exist" bug. However, the build starts
correctly when calling sbuild with LC_ALL=C in the environment, so I
guess this is due to the locale not getting set to C/POSIX before
calling schroot -i and parsing its output.

Daniel.

I have two minor, low prio changes pending that I can upload in the next
few days. If libavc1394 turns out as a showstopper for a transition in
the meantime, please go ahead with a binNMU.

Thanks for caring!

Yep, I'm in touch with upstream abouth this. The official download site

packaging current CVS. Expect an upload within the next days.

It seems that audiofile's modules/msadpcm.c::ms_adpcm_decode_block()
incorrectly scales the samplesPerBlock value with the number of
channels. All adpcm-coded files with two channels should be affected.
With the attached patch, I can play the "max_theme" test file without
audiofile crashing. However, I think a few additional checks are in
order to make the module more robust against malicious input. I'll try
to check this in the next days.

Daniel.

This sounds like the server part (dxexec) not starting up correctly.
Occasionally, this is caused by a stray shared memory segment and/or
semaphore left over from a previous instance. Can you please check for
suspicious entries with ipcs and try to remove them with ipcrm as
appropriate, or alternatively, can you check whether the problem
persists after a reboot?

I'm aware of the most recent versions released upstream, but won't
package them in unstable yet to facilitate potential fixes targetted at
lenny. Once the freeze for the new stable version of Debian is over,
I'll upload 1.5.1 (or whatever is current then). If you know about major
problems addressed in 1.5.1 that ought to be fixed for lenny as well,

Bug#491109: mercurial: Unreliable test for "wish" in postinst.

2008-07-16 Thread Daniel Kobras
Package: mercurial
Version: 1.0.1-3
Severity: normal

Hi!

When mercurial's postinst checks whether to enable extension hgk, it
runs

which wish > /dev/null || enable=false

but wish is handled via alternatives, and might only become available
later on if mercurial and tk8.4 are upgraded in one batch. Lacking
something like a "Pre-Suggests" to avoid this situation, maybe the test
could be expanded to eg.

which wish > /dev/null || test -d /usr/share/doc/tk8.4 || enable=false

or even a version that's less kludgy.

Daniel.

This is quite odd, as the libgraphicsmagick1-dev Depends line more or
less duplicates the source package's Build-Depends. Might be stray
dependencies that get picked up if the respective packages happen to be
installed at build time. The patch you sent in certainly isn't wrong,
but it's not the full story, either. The respective packages ought to be
added to Build-Depends as well, at least. I'll investigate.

> (The drawtiming package, on which this bug was filed, actually runs
> GraphicsMagick++-config, but that's just a wrapper for GraphicsMagick-config,

GraphicsMagick-config (just like Magick-config) historically cannot
distinguish between shared and static linkage. Hence the overly long
--libs line, and consequently the many Depends (rather than Recommends
or Suggests) in the -dev package. Therefore, I'd advise against using
the legacy GraphicsMagick-config, and prefer pkg-config instead, which
has this problem fixed. Wesley, if possible, please switch from
GraphicsMagick-config to pkg-config in the drawtiming package. This will
not only avoid graphicsmagick bug #486985, but also give you a much
shorter Depends line.

Thanks,

Daniel.

Thanks for the additional info. As the same problem could be reproduced

#414370 is the catch-all for the less severe flaws Sami's testcases

Thanks for your efforts! I probably won't get around to uploading a new
version of noflushd until next week. I'm perfectly fine with you
uploading to unstable right away this Sunday. Of course I can also do an

I'm aware of this failure in the testsuite. It's not a problem with the
package itself, but a consequence of ghostscript being completely
dysfunctional on some archs. I can always just disable the PS and PDF
related parts of the testsuite as a workaround, but I'd rather see
ghostscript fixed. Unfortunately, the bug appears to be quite involved.
I've had a look but didn't get any further than what others had noted
in the respective bug reports already. Smells a bit like a weird
toolchain issue, so maybe there's some merit in scheduling a re-build
with gcc 4.3?

Daniel.

Argh! Granted, it's less bad than silent breakage of interfaces, but
it's in the same league as a SONAME bump, so we'd be sure to incur the
release team's wrath for causing yet another pile of testing
transitions. We also ought to start splitting into separate packages for
the wand and core libs.

Even 6.3.9.1 is out by now, I think. We'll have to review the diff to
the version currently in Debian for the potential ABI/API breakage and
other beauties this package is infamous for, before deciding whether

I've uploaded a new upstream version to experimental yesterday, but it

Oh, I see what's gone wrong here. Your copies of the man pages have
moved from /usr/share/man/de to /usr/share/man/de.UTF-8, which broke
manpages-de's scriptlet that scans for duplicates. Will be fixed in
manpages-de 0.5-4.

There are no recent changes in these files that I'm aware of. We
generally encourage translators to contribute directly to upstream
projects if possible/applicable.

Why a Conflict? bumping the versioned Replaces: to (<= 0.5-2) should do
the trick as well, and doesn't force manpages-de off people's systems.
I'll remove the German translation of su(1) in the next upload.

I check the Packages file for duplicate man pages and remove them from

Bug#455801: imagemagick: Fail to create animation: sh: mpeg2encode: command not found

Here are two workarounds off the top of my head: mpeg2encode is the
reference implementation of an MPEG encoder. For unknown-most likely
historic-reasons, it's what imagemagick upstream uses as the default
delegate for encoding to mpeg, but cannot be distributed by Debian. You
can grab the code off the net and install it locally, though. However,
it's probably more easy to just use ffmpeg to do the job. Number your
source images like img1.jpg, img2.jpg and use ffmpeg -i img%d.jpg
foobar.mpg to do the conversion. I'm not sure whether parameter -r
allows for frame rates lower than 1 fps, but I've successfully used
hacks like 'for i in `seq -f "%04d" 0 124`; ln -s imgA.jpg tmp$i.jpg;
done' and so on to get at the desired duration for each of the stills.

Daniel.

Heh, but it's stable. ;-)

Luciano was working on a new upstream version, but has been quite busy
lately. Current status should be visible from CVS of pkg-gmagick on
alioth. If you've got a bit of spare time to waste, you're welcome to
join the team!

Bug#449319: mpg123: Numerous mp3 Internet streams now corrupting console and failing

It didn't go away because neither upstream (according to the bug
tracking system) nor me was aware of this problem. Thanks for reporting
it now.

I believe this is due to a recent addition of displaying Shoutcast (icy)
meta data. There's little information about this format available, but
apparantly it sometimes contains non-printable characters that can mess
up subsequent terminal output. Can you confirm that the problem
disappears for you if you run mpg123 without option -v? If so, my guess
is likely to be correct.

Daniel.

You're welcome. Package is uploaded now. Please add a

Conflicts: traceroute-nanog (<< 6.4.2-1)

to traceroute to make sure partial upgrade will work.

Daniel.

Thanks, applied now. I'll upload the new packages within the next days.

This one had already been applied to the Debian sources as
30_rfc_violating_ttl_fix.dpatch.

It's not included in 6.4.2. Maybe upstream referred to Debian in this
case? By the way, why did you add the patches to the Ubuntu sources, but
not apply them? They do not appear in 00list.

Regards,

Daniel.
