I would also be misleading considering the fonts are not downloadable from that site (or I couldn't find how). This has been reported in bug 426125 (and 415432), which is mislabeled as a ttf-dejavu bug. The bug is due to qt3 and openoffice not handling OpenType font names as defined in the specifications. An OpenType font family can have numerous style variants. This is very common in large families from foundries such as Adobe. There are legacy family and style names. These are limited to 4 variants (Regular, Bold, Italics, Bold Italics or synonyms). Some fonts, like Nimbus or Lucida, use only 4 variants but the names do not match these four and are sometimes renamed. Qt3, inkscape and OpenOffice are limited to legacy names. Recent versions of fontconfig will use both preferred and legacy names (as opposed to just legacy names before) and prioritize preferred names. Currently, gkt+ and pango with fontconfig work best with large font families, although a couple of weight variants might be might be mishandled. Bug#428034: Junicode font missing hinting instructions
Package: ttf-junicode Version: 0.6.13 The TTF files packages in ttf-junicode are missing TTF hinting instructions. The instructions are avalaible in the xgridfit directory of junicode source. To generate the TTF with their instructions, xgridfit is a prerequiste. The fonts should be generated with the commands $ xgridfit Junicode-Regular.xgf which creates are Junicode-Regular.pe for fontforge to add instructions before generating the TTF $ fontforge -script Junicode-Regular.pe which generates the TTF with hinting instructions. Repeat for Bold and Italics (BoldItalics isn't hinted yet). That or use junicode-*.zip which contains pre-generated TTF files with instructions. I'm seeing very ugly kerning for "Te" (italic) in the installer. See attached screenshot. This is a Pango bug, see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334758 Pango applies the same kerning for as many script the kerning pair is defined in. We can fix that on the font side by making sure the kerning pairs are only defined in Latin (or their own script), since T and e are Latin, it's not a problem.
