Bug#956506: Confirmed, regression since 5:102 in buster

2022-08-18 Thread Ivan Kohler
Confirming I'm also seeing this bug after an upgrade of my desktop to
bullseye.

It worked fine in buster (kde-plasma-desktop 5:102), though I freely
confess I have no idea which underlying KDE component or package is
invovled.

Looks like this is upstream bug #413104 - I confirmed the bug is only
present when using "Desktop" layout, not "Folder View".

Bug#988330: libbusiness-us-usps-webtools-perl: HTTP access shutting down June 24th, 2021

2021-05-10 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: libbusiness-us-usps-webtools-perl
Version: 1.124-1
Severity: grave
Tags: upstream
Justification: renders package unusable
Forwarded: https://github.com/ssimms/business-us-usps-webtools/issues/2

USPS is sending notices that HTTP access will be turned off shortly, in favor
of HTTPS.

Given that is a web service that will break in the wild, in addition to a
regular update for unstable, we should update buster (and stretch) via
stable-updates (and oldstable-updates).

I can confirm that a package built with a simple s/http/https/ replacement
works with a live USPS account, at least on buster. Note that since buster,
the module has been rewritten to use Mojo::UserAgent instead of LWP::UserAgent.

Bug#925056: adopting this poor lil' orphan

I have this in production on a number of machines, so at the very least
worth conservatively applying things that would seem to do more good
than harm, while considering future options (migrate to something else,
or get ssmtp into shape?).

Co-maintainers welcome. Looks like there is no particular active

That makes no sense and is not now the bug tracker is used. The bug is
still present, I am re-opening the original bug to save all history, not
bloat the bug tracker with new copies of the same bugs every few years.

If there is some additional information you require other than the
verification the bug is still present on buster, please feel free ask
for it. It seems bog-simple straightforward to reproduce to me, but
perhaps my multiple different systems over the years have some
configuration that is unusual.

Again, my thanks for packaging up a great scanning program that runs
under multiple desktop environments, and my thanks to upstream for the
application.

Bug#835442: libparams-classify-perl: XS version segfaults under mod_perl; please consider building as pure perl

2016-08-25 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: libparams-classify-perl
Version: 0.013-6
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

Hi,

Using this module in a mod_perl environment, even using mpm_prefork (and thus
not threads), we get a segfault immediately. Possibly related to
https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=72743

Building a local package without the .xs portion of the module works, and we
don't see any performance change in our usage.

Since:
- "Silent segfault" is not a failure case that Perl end-developers typically
  expect or know how to diagnose further
- It is difficult and time-consuming to bisect an application's
  dependencies to find the problematic module

May I respectfully suggest that we build this module without the XS
portion (i.e. as an arch-independant package) ?

Thanks for considering this change.

Bug#830152: libnet-ssleay-perl: Under mod_perl, first client connection fails in CTX_new, but subsequent connections work

2016-07-06 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: libnet-ssleay-perl
Version: 1.74-1
Severity: important

Running in a (preforking) mod_perl context, the first client conneciton
attempted (during each process lifetime) fails. Subsequent connections work.

Example script:

  #!/usr/bin/perl
  use Net::SSLeay qw(post_https make_form);
  $Net::SSLeay::trace = 0;

  my $host = 'secure.authorize.net';

  my ($page, $response, %reply_headers) = post_https($host, 443, '/', '',
make_form(var1 => 'one', var2 => 'two' ));
  print "response $response\n";

  #again, it'll work...
  ($page, $response, %reply_headers) = post_https($host, 443, '/', '',
make_form(var1 => 'one', var2 => 'two' ));
  print "response $response\n";

Example Apache config:

  AddHandler perl-script .cgi
  PerlHandler ModPerl::Registry
  Options +ExecCGI

In a non-mod_perl context, this returns (e.g., depending on $host):

  ivan@fleetpaw:/var/www/html$ perl testssl.cgi
  response HTTP/1.1 303 See Other
  response HTTP/1.1 303 See Other

In a mod_perl context, the first time this is called in a process (i.e. after a
restart), this returns:

  response HTTP/1.0 900 NET OR SSL ERROR

  CTX_new 30723: 1 - error:0906D06C:PEM routines:PEM_read_bio:no start line

Changing $host between connections has no effect, so it isn't a per-host
failure/cache. Changing $ssl_version has no effect. This does not appear to
be specific to ModPerl::Registry (originally observed in an HTML::Mason app).

I believe this behavior is present back to jessie. Not sure about wheezy.

As a workaround, I'm using the following code per-process to trigger the
one-time context creation error so all subsequent real connections work:

  {
use Net::SSLeay;
package Net::SSLeay;
initialize();
my $bad_ctx = new_x_ctx();
while ( ERR_get_error() ) {}; #print_errs('CTX_new');
CTX_free($bad_ctx);
  }

Oddly, retreiving the errors is necessary to make this work.

19 digit Visa cards are being issued already, but they do not appear to be
in widespread use yet.

None of the other changes are sufficiently urgent.

I do have concerns that we are "really hoping" a point release will be
in a specific timeframe. I'm not saying that it won't be or anything
bad about the release folks - I'm just concerned about _relying_ on such
a thing.

Are we tracking outstanding issues and their deadlines somewhere, and
have that list and our procedures/workflow documented such that we will
know to add the necessary packages -updates when point releases are
delayed? If not, I think that relying on an point update in a specific
future timeframe is a bad idea. It sets us up to fail.

All that said, I don't really have time or resources to push this
forward any more (I find this exhausting compared to writing code - I've
spent longer discusssing this than making the actual changes to the CPAN
module). So just go ahead and do whatever you think is best.

Well, only since you asked, it seems to me if you're going to include
completely every single functional / code change in 0.35, it *is* 0.35
and you should honestly declare $VERSION to be 0.35. Stripping out some
docs and unused metadata doesn't seem to me to make it 0.33 +
selectively backported fixes. This is really just a (very slightly
riskier) repackaging of 0.35.

Outside of going through these contortious for our release management, a
dependency or person that wants to check the verison wants to know what
verison the *code* came from, not whether or not the copyright year or a
bouncing email address are in the docs are from 0.33...

But the most important thing by far is just getting it fixed so
transactions don't fail, so if making it a fake 0.33 is what works, then
yeah, that's a whole lot better than not doing it.

Bug#814479: libbusiness-creditcard-perl: New upstream version 0.35 (including new MasterCard ranges)

2016-06-07 Thread Ivan Kohler
change_ has been for the purpose of staying up-to-date
with real world requirements such as recognizing new cards or processing
agreements. Here is the relevant section of the Changes file.

0.35  Tue Feb  9 14:43:38 PST 2016
- Fix bug identifying 49* Visa cards introduced in 0.34, patch from
  Ed J, thanks!
- doc: Clarify processing agreements don't apply to Canada

0.34  Fri Feb  5 07:24:00 PST 2016
- 19 digit Visa and Discover cards
- MasterCard 222100-272099 range
- Canada does not process JCB 3529-3589 as Discover, but Puerto Rico,
  US Virgin Islans, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau and Guam do
- China Union Pay only processed as Discover in the US, Mexico and
  the Caribbean, not elsewhere outside China
- 14 digit Discover remain only in 36*
- receipt_cardtype subroutine supporting Discover's new receipt
  requirements

What would you omit in a backport for jessie? I think everything needs
to be included, they're all updates to keep up with the real world.

As with all of us in the volunteer effort, I only have a limited amount
of time and motivation to I only have so much time and effort to devote
to Debian work. In this case, I don't personally anticipate motivating
for more work creating a Debian-specific, un-QAed backport in order to
keep release managers from "cringing".

For the sake of our users and free softwre (you know, our priorities), I
would respectfully suggest the release managers should "cringe" and deal
with this course of action as the least risky of the less-than-ideal
alternatives, with more than ample precedent (e.g. spamassassin, ClamAV,
etc.).

FWIW, we are just a few months away from the October 2016 "deadline" when
MasterCard is expected to start issuing cards with the new ranges. If we
have not figured out how to accept these changes by then, our users could
start seeing their web sites refuse to accept real-world cards and lose
sales and money. That would be a shame.

Thanks for the enlightening discussion and all of your hard work on the
Debian Perl team.

Hi,

This isn't a request to upload new versions to (old)stable. This is a
request to upload new versions to proposed-updates / stable-updates,
formerly known as "volatile". (ref https://wiki.debian.org/StableUpdates
and https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2011/03/msg00010.html)

> we'd need a minimal diff
> against the versions in wheezy/jessie (0.31 and 0.33), then we can
> talk to the release team about them accepting uploads.

I do not believe a "minimal diff" is necessary for -updates. This is not
a security backport. This is an update for software which requires
alignment to the real work to remain relevant and useful.

stable-updates carries software which requires updates over time to
remain relevant, such as spam filters, virus scanners, timezone updates,
web scrapers (i.e. youtube video downloaders) and similar things. We
don't backport functionality to old versions of ClamAV or SpamAssassin -
this would seem to be the same thing.

The sole purpose of libbusiness-creditcard-perl is to validate and
identify credit cards. Credit card issues are updating these rules and
issuing new credit cards with new number ranges without regard to our
release cycles. We should be able to update this module through -updates
like we do ClamAV, Spamassassin, timezones and so forth.

Thanks for all the hard work you do on the Perl team and for Debian!

Alas, I see no change in behavior in simple-scan 3.20.0-1. There are
still no window borders in KDE.

Bug#814479: libbusiness-creditcard-perl: New upstream version 0.35 (including new MasterCard ranges)

2016-02-11 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: libbusiness-creditcard-perl
Version: 0.33-1
Severity: important

New upstream version 0.35 is available.

The most important change in this release is recognition of new MasterCard
ranges which will be issued starting in October 2016.

I recommend also uploading this verison to wheezy-updates and jessie-updates
(aka the artist formerly known as "volatile").

Bug#807521: libmojolicious-perl: Consider dropping Recommends: libev-perl

2015-12-09 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: libmojolicious-perl
Version: 6.15+dfsg-1
Severity: wishlist

The new version of libnet-mac-vendor-perl depends on libmojolicious-perl (for
Mojo::UserAgent). This brings in libev-perl, which causes Apache to segfault
on startup. libev-perl upstream is disinclined to address the issue.

The end result is that mod_perl webapps which display MAC address vendor
information now result in mysterious startup segfults in Apache.

Considering this, perhaps libmojolicious-perl should not Recommend:
libev-perl?

Who could blame you? Upstream is absurdly abusive, and looking into it,

Bug#805923: Updated patch

2015-11-23 Thread Ivan Kohler
Here is an updated patch which includes a changelog, puts the changes in
Debian's debian/patches directory instead of applying directly, fixes
one more new place in the test suite that uses the network, and fixes an
upstream bug in the load_cache method itself so loading our own copy of
oui.txt works at all.

Bug#805923: libnet-mac-vendor-perl: Querying over the network suboptimal / local caching / package justification

2015-11-23 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: libnet-mac-vendor-perl

FWIW, it appears the new version of the module allows additional control and
using a locally-cached copy of the data. So, perhaps the decision is being
deferred to the application developer, who could then implement a different
cache strategy or use /var/lib/ieee-data/oui.txt if present, which is
automatically updated monthly.

> I think we have lots of copies of the same

Speaking as an application author, vendor information for MAC addresses
is a useful feature. As a Perl application author, our "go-to" for
implementing the feature was CPAN and thus Net::MAC::Vendor. As a Debian
user and developer, having Debian include the modules in our Perl stack
(and being able to contribute new modules and maintenance) is useful.
So, from that perspective, a package for this module makes sense.
If Debian dropped it, we'd have to maintain it in our repository, as
would presumably others, so we might as well keep it in Debian and
contribute together.

We could consider a Debian-specific patch to Depend: on ieee-data and
use /var/lib/ieee-data/oui.txt as the default data source instead of the
web. Now that I think about it I'm very much warming up to this idea.

Bug#805847: libnet-mac-vendor-perl: Apache/mod_perl silently does not start if Net::MAC::Vendor 1.25-1 is used (regression from 1.23-1)

I was able to reproduce with this configuration:

  PerlRequire "/home/ivan/apache2/handler.pl"

and handler.pl is:

  #!/usr/bin/perl
  use Net::MAC::Vendor;
  1;

I'm not completely sure what's different internally that's triggering
the failure. PerlRequire is preloaded during server startup, but
PerlHandler isn't called until the child process is handling the
request?

I'll file separate bugs for your other two concerns about this package.

> I sort of lost the incentive to look further; maybe someone else will?

I'll see what I'm able to do.

So far, I think I've tracked this problem down to libev-perl; the above
handler.pl fails with "use EV;" instead of "use Net::MAC::Vendor", and
uninstalling libev-perl makes Net::MAC::Vendor 1.25 work fine.

Reassigning this bug to the libev-perl package.

Bug#799090: simple-scan: No window borders displayed in KDE

2015-09-15 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: simple-scan
Version: 3.17.4-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

The user interface does not show a border in KDE.

Regarding the previous bug and entry for this same problem under MATE (and
LXDE) (#756913), this was closed with the Changelog entry noting:
  "Don't use GtkHeaderBar in LXDE, MATE"

White-listing every desktop environment that needs normal behavior seems
backwards to me. Shouldn't simple-scan let the window manager draw borders as
the _default_, and only turn on the special no-border case when it specifically
detects it is running under a desktop environment where this is appropriate?

Otherwise this same bug applies for (almost) every one of the 50+ packages
providing x-window-manager.

Thanks again for a great scanning program and for considering the needs of
users on multiple desktop environments.

Package: libnet-domain-tld-perl

New upstream version 1.73 is available.

This update (and most updates to this package, since that is its
singular purpose) refreshes the list of top-level domains currently
available for registration and in the root servers. These days, this is
very much a moving target over the course of a release, and so should be
treated in the same way as other volitile data like virus/spam signature
updates, timezone updates, etc.

We should request migration of 1.73 to testing, or upload to jessie-updates.

We should probably also upload to wheezy-updates, the version in wheezy is
from 2011. (Real world use-case: Just registered perl.business and my DNS
admin system running on wheezy does not recognize it.)

Bug#777742: simple-scan: "All pages from feeder" scans an extra blank page

2015-02-11 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: simple-scan
Version: 3.15.4-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

When I put a single page into the feeder of my scanner and use the
"All Pages From Feeder" scan option, an extra blank page is appended to the
output. (If I use the "Single Page" option, it doesn't pull from the feeder at
all, which is not what is most useful.)

Mechanically, the scanner only scans the one page -- it doesn't have some sort
of paper detection error and physically scan another page. Other applications
like skanlite in ADF mode correctly scan a single page.

Also, deleting the additional page does not work -- I right click on the page,
select delete, and nothing happens. This might be a separate bug report, can
clone if so, but I mention it here because page deletion otherwise seems to
work and I wouldn't have to delete the extra blank page if it wasn't there in
the first place.

p.s. thanks for a scanning program for the free software desktop that finally
has a nice UI, PDF output, options for the things I need and no cluuter for
useless options I don't.

Bug#761292: Still occurs with gnome-icon-theme-symbolic and "Start" button

2014-09-28 Thread Ivan Kohler
With gnome-icon-theme-symbolic installed (the first and therefore
preferred alternative), and adwaita-icon-theme not installed, the "Start
a new document" icon is still a red X page. (With both packages
installed or with adwaita-icon-theme installed alone, the problem does
not occur.)

If "gnome-icon-theme-symbolic" is missing some icon it should provide,
please provide some details and I will file a bug against that package
(or you can).

Otherwise, seems to me that simple-scan should depend on
adwaita-icon-theme only?

Thanks.

Bug#153587: Licensing

2014-05-06 Thread Ivan Kohler
I don't personally have a need for String::LRC anymore and this
WNPP should perhaps be closed entirely (String::LRC it is of niche usefulness,
typically integrating with legacy systems).

Nevertheless, for the record in case someone does wind up needing and
packaging this, I did wind up contacting the author back then about
licensing and he did provide a statement that BSD was his intention and
it was fine to redistribute under that license. (That was more than good
enough for 2002. Not sure it holds up to today's standards?)

Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 09:33:49 -0400
From: WhoElse?
Subject: Re: String::LRC licensing

That sounds fine to me, my intent was along the
lines of the BSD license; thus, the generic BSD
license is fine. Would you require anything
more of me at this time?

Regards,

Ralph Padron

Bug#606415: Back to the Future II

2014-04-24 Thread Ivan Kohler
So, in the fullness of (not even all that much) time...

It looks like the distro-info-data package now provides up-to-date
information that could be used to generate the config file with correct
release names (both before and after release).

Not that it is of particular severity (hence, minor, and perhaps should
be wishlist), but with the metainfo/chicken-and-egg problems solved in a
distribution-wide rather than schroot-specific fashion, perhaps we could
now keep this bug open? It might pique someone's interest enough to
submit a good patch.  :)

Thanks.

Justification: In (team) package maintainer and upstream's opinion, package
unsuitable for release -- will soon be mostly unusable

New upstream release 0.07 is available.

Importantly, IPPay changed the gateway's server name and path, and will soon
turn off the old gateway, so versions before 0.07 will stop working at that
time.

Regarding squeeze, a 0.07 package should be uploaded to squeeze-updates.
Alternatively, the relevant changes (parts of
https://www.freeside.biz/gitweb/?p=Business-OnlinePayment-IPPay.git;a=commitdiff;h=1f19e67636476c7119cfb41920c5b176e617c697)
could be backported to 0.06.

Regarding wheezy, we should ask for a freeze exception for 0.07.
Alternatively, like above, we could backport just the relevant chagnes
and uplaod to testing-proposed-updates.

Since wheezy isn't affected (or released) and upstream hasn't yet
responded/updated, I guess I was more in a holding pattern over here
with regard to this.

Anyone else may feel free to go ahead and upload.

Bug#688069: liblocale-subcountry-perl: Version checks fail ("our $VERSION" moved before "package Locale::SubCountry")

2012-09-18 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: liblocale-subcountry-perl
Version: 1.56-1
Severity: serious
Tags: upstream patch
Justification: (Team) Package maintainer's opinion - package unsuitable for
release

$ perl -e 'use Locale::SubCountry 54'
Locale::SubCountry does not define $Locale::SubCountry::VERSION--version check
failed at -e line 1.

Sometime after version 1.50, "our $VERSION = 1.xx" was moved to the top of
the code, above any "package" declaration. It is therefore not declaring
$Locale::SubCountry::VERSION, and previously-working version checks like
"use Locale::SubCountry 1.42" now throw a fatal error.

The patch below adds a "package Locale::SubCountry" to the beginning of the
code. This seems like typical / best practice for modules, to avoid any
symbol exports from the intial "use" statements from polluting the main::
namespace.

Given the information here concerning weak passwords, I have set the
severity to critical.

> Upgrading to the latest upstream source should fix this bug.

When I tried 3.0 it didn't work
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=487487)
and didn't compile on some arches
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=489840),
but perhaps it is worth trying again with upstream 3.0.2, fixing any
issues that crop up.

Or, it may be more straightfoward (especially since we've just frozen)
to backport port the fix to 2.4.

In any case, I'm very sorry to say that my need for libxcrypt and
libpam-unix2 ended several years ago and I won't be able to work on this
myself. libpam-unix2 was already orphaned and I have now orphaned
libxcrypt as well. Best wishes to a future adopter.

Bug#679050: ITP: libcam-pdf-perl -- PDF manipulation library

2012-06-25 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Ivan Kohler

* Package name: libcam-pdf-perl
  Version : 1.58
  Upstream Author : Chris Dolan
* URL : http://http://search.cpan.org/dist/CAM-PDF/
* License : Perl
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : PDF manipulation library

 This package reads and writes any document that conforms to the PDF
 specification generously provided by Adobe at
 http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/pdf/index_reference.html (link last
 checked Oct 2005).

 The file format through PDF 1.5 is well-supported, with the exception of the
 "linearized" or "optimized" output format, which this module can read but not
 write. Many specific aspects of the document model are not manipulable with
 this package (like fonts), but if the input document is correctly written, then
 this module will preserve the model integrity.

 The PDF writing feature saves as PDF 1.4-compatible. That means that we cannot
 write compressed object streams. The consequence is that reading and then
 writing a PDF 1.5+ document may enlarge the resulting file by a fair margin.

Please feel free to adopt the package and maintain it as part of the

I am not standing in the way of anyone who would like to help maintain
any of those packages: I welcome adoption, co-maintainers and
low-threshold NMUs. Mostly I just haven't gotten around to uploading
the less popular/important packages with the Perl group set as
maintainer, but anyone else is welcome to do so as well.

Bug#668696: RFA: libdns-zoneparse-perl -- Perl extension for parsing and manipulating DNS Zone Files.

2012-04-13 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the libdns-zoneparse-perl package.

The package description is:
 This module will parse a Zone File and put all the Resource Records (RRs)
 into an anonymous hash structure. At the moment, the following types of
 RRs are supported: SOA, NS, MX, A, CNAME, TXT, PTR. It could be useful for
 maintaining DNS zones, or for transferring DNS zones to other servers. If
 you want to generate an XML-friendly version of your zone files, it is
 easy to use XML::Simple with this module once you have parsed the zonefile.
 .
 DNS::ZoneParse scans the DNS zonefile - removes comments and seperates
 the file into its constituent records. It then parses each record and
 stores the records internally.

Bug#508759: ssmtp co-maintenance

2012-01-05 Thread Ivan Kohler
Hi Anibal,

I was dissapointed to find this bug was still present in Squeeze and
would like to make sure it is eliminated before our next stable release.

At first, I thought you were MIA, but it seems you may just be very busy
and have too many Debian commitments on your plate.

May I help co-maintain the ssmtp package going forward and upload a new
version with this fix? Or, if you don't have time for it at all, I'd be
happy to take over the package entirely. Or, if neither of those
options are of interest to you, can I at least convince you to give your
blessing to a one-off NMU to fix this problem?

By way of testing, I have been running a patched version
(http://freeside.biz/~ivan/freeside-squeeze/ssmtp/) on my server and
just under a hundred customer servers for over a year without problems.

If I don't hear back from you at all concerning this 3+ year old bug
(even if to simply say "I looked at the patch but it wasn't ready
for inclusion, here's what needs to be done"), then I will assume you
are okay with at least an NMU and proceed with that.

Thanks.

Unknown. I couldn't even get later verions to run stabily with current X for
long enough to tell.  649239, 649280, 649346, 649465, etc.

I'm currently using 11-10 with old X packages, but when I have some time to
close everything out and reboot the machine (it is my main work desktop) I'll
test 11-11 and current X.

My X packages are held at the indicated old verisons:
xserver-xorg 1:7.6+8
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.9.4-1
xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.6.0-2
xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.5.0-2
xserver-xorg-input-mouse 1:1.6.0-3

With these old X packages, the bug does not appear, so perhaps that is a useful
data point.

* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/true
* License : Perl
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : Perl module to automatically return a true value when a
file is required

Perl's require builtin (and its use wrapper) requires the files it loads
to return a true value. This is usually accomplished by placing a single

1;

statement at the end of included scripts or modules. It's not onerous to
add but it's a speed bump on the Perl novice's road to enlightenment. In
addition, it appears to be a non-sequitur to the uninitiated, leading
some to attempt to mitigate its appearance with a comment:

1; # keep require happy

or:

1; # Do not remove this line

or even:

1; # Must end with this, because Perl is bogus.

This module packages this "return true" behaviour so that it need not
be written explicitly. It can be used directly, but it is intended to be
invoked from the import method of a Modern::Perl-style module that enables
modern Perl features and conveniences and cleans up legacy Perl warts.

Fork is too low level, and difficult to manage. Often people forget to
exit at the end, reap their children, and check exit status. The problem
is the low level functions provided to do these things. Throw in pipes
for IPC and you just have a pile of things nobody wants to think about.

Child is an Object Oriented interface to fork. It provides a clean way
to start a child process, and manage it afterwords. It provides methods
for running, waiting, killing, checking, and even communicating with a
child process.

Well, I'm sure there are other things to do right now (hence, minor, and
could be downgraded to wishlist).

The changes that I came up with at first thought seemed more trouble
than they were worth, to me (swapping out example configs based on
something that indicates the release happened)... but perhaps in time a
good solution could be found.

This is an alternative to H::U::F with following features:

Simpler interface
  Hash::FieldHash provides a few functions: fieldhash() and fieldhashes().
  That's enough.

Higher performance
  Hash::FieldHash is faster than Hash::Util::FieldHash, because its internals
  use simpler structures.

Originally I had uploaded libmodern-perl-perl by accident and was
surprised it made it through NEW. I was planning on asking for removal
(and for libmodern-perl to be renamed to or Provide:
libmodern-perl-perl).

However it seems that David Moreno may be MIA-ish?
(The most recent activity I can find is an upload of libxml-treepp-perl

So I am considering just running with libmodern-perl-perl (via pkg-perl

Any objections?

The international standard ISO 8601 "Data elements and interchange

also defines textual formats for the representation of dates in these
calendars. This module provides functions to convert dates between
these three calendars and Chronological Julian Day Numbers, which is
a suitable format to do arithmetic with. It also supplies functions
that describe the shape of these calendars, to assist in calendrical
calculations. It also supplies functions to represent dates textually in
the ISO 8601 formats. ISO 8601 also covers time of day and time periods,
but this module does nothing relating to those parts of the standard;
this is only about labelling days.

  Description : Conversion between flavours of Julian Date

For date and time calculations it is convenient to represent dates by a
simple linear count of days, rather than in a particular calendar. This is
such a good idea that it has been invented several times. If there were
a single such linear count then it would be the obvious data interchange
format between calendar modules. With several versions, calendar modules
can use such sensible data formats and still have interoperability
problems. This module tackles that problem, by performing conversions
between different flavours of day count. These day count systems are
generically known as "Julian Dates", after the most venerable of them.

Among Julian Date systems there are also some non-trivial differences
of concept. There are systems that count only complete days, and
those that count fractional days also. There are some that are fixed
to Universal Time (time on the prime meridian), and others that are
interpreted according to a timezone. Some consider the day to start at
noon and others at midnight, which is semantically significant for the
complete-day counts. The functions of this module appropriately handle
the semantics of all the non-trivial conversions.

The day count systems supported by this module are Julian Date, Reduced
Julian Date, Modified Julian Date, Dublin Julian Date, Truncated Julian
Date, Chronological Julian Date, Rata Die, and Lilian Date, each in both
integral and fractional forms.

When enabled (or disabled as some may prefer to say, since you actually turn it

harmful, since its parsing has many quirks and its use is error prone (when

It currently does not warn for core functions (print, say, exec or system).
This may change in the future, or may be added as optional features that would
be enabled by passing options to unimport.

This class implements the DateTime::TimeZone interface, so that its instances
can be used with DateTime objects.

Bug#575977: ITP: libautovivification-perl -- Lexically disable autovivification.

2010-03-30 Thread Ivan Kohler
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Ivan Kohler
Owner: Ivan Kohler

* Package name: libautovivification-perl
  Version : 0.05
  Upstream Author : Vincent Pit, ,
http://www.profvince.com
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/autovivification/
* License : Perl
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : Lexically disable autovivification.

When an undefined variable is dereferenced, it gets silently
upgraded to an array or hash reference (depending of the type of the
dereferencing). This behaviour is called autovivification and usually
does what you mean (e.g. when you store a value) but it's sometimes
unnatural or surprising because your variables gets populated behind
your back. This is especially true when several levels of dereferencing
are involved, in which case all levels are vivified up to the last,
or when it happens in intuitively read-only constructs like exists.

This pragma lets you disable autovivification for some constructs and
optionally throws a warning or an error when it would have happened.

Bug#566921: ITP: libautobox-core-perl

2010-03-30 Thread Ivan Kohler
Hello,

Are you still interested in packaging libautobox-core-perl? I'm working
on packaging libperl5i-perl which depends on it and it would be great to
get it in the archive.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. If you're amenable
I'd be happy to prepare a package for your review, or take the ITP and
upload.

Same for libautobox-list-util and libclass-perl

Bug#575976: ITP: libmodern-perl-perl -- Enable all of the features of Modern Perl with one command

* Package name: libmodern-perl-perl
  Version : 1.03
  Upstream Author : chromatic,
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Modern-Perl/
* License : Perl
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : Enable all of the features of Modern Perl with one command

Modern Perl programs use several modules to enable additional features
of Perl and of the CPAN. Instead of copying and pasting all of these
use lines, instead write only one:

use Modern::Perl;

For now, this only enables the strict and warnings pragmas, as well as
all of the features available in Perl 5.10. It also enables C3 method
resolution order; see perldoc mro for an explanation. In the future, it
will include additional CPAN modules which have proven useful and stable.

See http://www.modernperlbooks.com/mt/2009/01/toward-a-modernperl.html
for more information, and http://www.modernperlbooks.com/ for further
discussion of Modern Perl and its implications.

  Description : Perl6-like OO caller() interface for Perl 5

By default, this module exports the caller function. This automatically
returns a new caller object. An optional argument specifies how many
stack frames back to skip, just like the CORE::caller function.

Bug#575974: ITP: libtime-y2038-perl -- Versions of Perl's time functions which work beyond 2038

* License : Perl
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : Versions of Perl's time functions which work beyond 2038

On many computers, Perl's time functions will not work past the
year 2038. This is a design fault in the underlying C libraries Perl
uses. Time::y2038 provides replacements for those functions which will
work accurately +/1 142 million years.
