Bug#905772: For me it needs sysV drop and --no-stop-on-upgrade and --no-restart-after-upgrade

Testing now confirmed, that for the version in experimental I need to do both:

a) drop the sysV

slightly outdated

b) Specify both --no-stop-on-upgrade and --no-restart-after-upgrade
Otherwise dh_installsystemd snippets will restart the service

Hi,
A quick word of thanks - removing the sysv script made the upgrade from
stretch to buster complete for me.

In case you notice its missing, I had previously commented out
'virtlogd-admin.socket' from line 386 of the postinst. I'm unsure if it
was related to having the install complete but will test another time.

thanks,
Karl.

Bug#912725: virtinst: Please demote virtinst recommends on virt-viewer to suggests

2018-11-03 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: virtinst
Version: 1:1.4.0-5
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I would like to request the dependency currently held by virtinst on
virt-viewer be downgraded to suggests instead of recommends.

https://salsa.debian.org/libvirt-team/virt-manager/blob/debian/sid/debian/control#L59

Virtinst is " a set of commandline tools to create virtual machines
using libvirt" yet due to its virt-viewer dependency downloads 500mb of
otherwise unecesary packages.

Note in the examples below I already have qemu installed so it didn't
affect the package tree.

When installed with no parameters:
0 upgraded, 258 newly installed, 0 to remove and 14 not upgraded.
Need to get 137 MB of archives.
After this operation, 516 MB of additional disk space will be used.

When installed with no-install-recommends:
0 upgraded, 27 newly installed, 0 to remove and 14 not upgraded.
Need to get 5,691 kB of archives.
After this operation, 16.8 MB of additional disk space will be used.

thanks,
Karl.

Bug#905869: lxc-create fails creating ubuntu-bionic containers on stable/stretch

2018-08-10 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: lxc
Version: 1:2.0.7-2+deb9u2

Required setup:
* Stable install (Stretch)
* LXC 1:2.0.7-2+deb9u2
* Debootstrap 1.0.89
* Ubuntu Bionic debootstrap script

When trying to bootstrap a new Ubuntu Bionic container the lxc-ubuntu
template fails to move a file that looks suspiciously like an upstart
config file (which is no longer used in Ubuntu)

> root@mainserver:/var/log/lxc# /usr/bin/lxc-create --name tendenci11-combined

Guarding the file moves with if statements works for me allowing me to
deploy Bionic hosts:

Bug#831850: All templates are passwordless

2018-08-10 Thread Karl Goetz
Hi,
A quick line to note that all templates are now root passwordless. I
updated wiki to mention that.

https://wiki.debian.org/LXC?action=diff=155=156

Looks like I forgot the link to upstream/salsa to wiki but its easy
enough to find when you know the version.

Wiki suggests the same method as README.Debian.

  hi,
there is no indicator in the calendar to show what the time is at the
moment. a little red bar as used in some other calendars could make a
huge difference in that regard. A good example is the timeline addon,
  which does this nicely. thanks,

Wouldn't it be nicer to make this a RFP for xul-ext-timeline then? The
package should be quiet simple. Any takers?

hi,
i have not used iceowl recently but timeline sounds like what i was after, so i
suppose this could be turned into an rfp.

I thought there was a bug on this, but i can't find it.
The getnonfreefonts is only used for downloading proprietary
software, so it should probably go in contrib rather then
 main.

If it were in a separate package, or at least a major part of
the package it is in, I'd agree with you. But IMO it doesn't
make sense to split off a contrib package from texlive-base-bin
for one small script. And AFAIR, this is also consense in the
project - please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not aware of other package in main with similar downloading
scripts, perhaps I've missed something myself though.

If you take scripts in a somewhat broader context, the add-on
 mechanism of most browser qualifies.

The add on mechanism of browsers supports downloading free extensions
too. TTbOMK this script only downloads non-free/proprietary code.

I'm closing this bug. The script itself is free software and
creating a new package (or removing the script) is pretty much
   pointless.

While I won't try and change the but status, could I ask why you
think removing the script is pointless?

 There are two possibilites:
 1) Move the script into its own package in contrib.
 2) Remove it entirely.

Looking at the age of the bug, it's pretty clear nobody is going to do
either. And it is just a small part of a package, so the benefits
 simple outweigh the extra work.

The right way to go from here is trying to get the fonts free.
Everything else is just beating around the bush.

That would be ideal, sadly it doesn't always work :(
thanks,
kk

Thanks for adding that!

I note that there is no dpkg backport listed on packages.d.o

Is there a plan for it to be updated?

I've now committed the hardening changes. I'm having (unrelated)

i'll push the changes to the public git repo.

I've built the packages, and we've got (at least some) protection:

~/src/debian-games/freeciv/debian/freeciv-server/usr/games:master $ !h
hardening-check freeciv-server
freeciv-server:
Position Independent Executable: no, normal executable!
 Stack protected: yes
 Fortify Source functions: yes
 Read-only relocations: yes
 Immediate binding: no, not found!

Is this what you would expect to see? the GTK client returns the same
set.

Bug#663936: rinse: Please retry if .rpm files are zero length

2012-03-14 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: rinse
Version: 1.9.1-1
Severity: normal

Hi,
As a result of my last bug (being unable to stop rinse while downloading
packages), I'm left with a directory full of 0 length rpm files.
Because they are 'already downloaded' rinse loops through, spitting out
this error for each package:
Extracting .rpm file : zlib-1.2.3-4.el5.i386.rpm
error: not an rpm package
argument is not an RPM package

It keeps 'installing', but nothing is in place so its all totally
broken.

Bug#446515: alien-arena: game fails to start after single player game chosen

2012-03-09 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: alien-arena
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

hi all,

The respondent in #58 jumped on IRC, so I thought I'd provide a bit of
extra info.
They have opened a new ticket about this upstream[1], as the old one [2]
appears to be dead. They've tested it all the way up to SVN head from
upstream and its still a problem, so will affect all versions in Debian.

[1]
http://www.corent.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=bugreportaction=displaythread=6612
[2]
http://corent.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=bugreportaction=displaythread=4606

#58 has offered to help upstream write the required support (ref back to
[1]), but as I write this they haven't replied just yet. I'm wondering
if we should blacklist PPC from future uploads until upstream have this
problem resolved, or if that would be considered Not The Done Thing.

thanks,
kk

Bug#654809: enabled hardened build flags

Package: freeciv
Severity: normal

Hi both,
If we are willing to drop trivial backporting to oldstable, could we use
`dpkg-buildflags --export=configure` to cut out all the manual setting
and exporting of the hardening variables?
Problem with that method would be on the Ubuntu side - they don't appear
to have dpkg-dev 1.16.1 in anything released , or in their backports.

Failing that, should I just use the submitted patch to cure this issue?

I'm sure, it wouldn't behave that way if no one wanted it to do so.
fwiw, an option to say 'ask before overwriting' would suite me just as

I assumed by its mime type.

It appears to be fine with the last 3 lines.

It would be great if this could be resolved, as its causing cron to

 Hi Karl (2011.12.14_01:57:05_+0200)
Because pbuilder-dist is available in squeeze, but qemu-debootstrap
isn't, I've downloaded the script from bug 572952 and I'm trying to
use it with pbuilder-dist. Unfortunately, despite saying install
or change DEBOOTSTRAP option it seems to ignore the environment

it excessively hard to use the thing, to the extent that you need

pbuilder-dist is passing --debootstrap qemu-debootstrap to pbuilder.
That overrides anything in pbuilderrc. Can you not put it somewhere on
 your PATH?

Perhaps it shouldn't suggest using DEBOOTSTRAP option, if it simply

I put qemu-debootstrap in /usr/local/bin and still had no joy from

Having to set up *anything* in root's .pbuilderrc is a bad sign.
It should be using your .pbuilderrc.

This is why pbuilder-dist now refuses to be run under sudo, and calls
sudo itself. A bit of an ugly hack, but not too much one can do about
 it...

Hopefully this can be worked out then.

an amd64 install), the chroot will be created natively. For
others (e.g. armel on an i386 install), qemu-static and binfmt-
misc will be used.

qemu-static and binfmt-misc don't appear as packages or commands on
squeeze, and I can't find references to them on other releases either.

thanks,
kk

Bug#652000: /usr/bin/pbuilder-dist: pbuilder-dist ignores environment and has no way to set a custom pbuilderrc

2011-12-13 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: ubuntu-dev-tools
Version: 0.101
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/pbuilder-dist

Hi,
Because pbuilder-dist is available in squeeze, but qemu-debootstrap
isn't, I've downloaded the script from bug 572952 and I'm trying to use
it with pbuilder-dist. Unfortunately, despite saying install or change
DEBOOTSTRAP option it seems to ignore the environment and the users
.pbuilderrc. Could this be changed please? It makes it excessively hard
to use the thing, to the extent that you need to be able to edit roots
pbuilderrc.

thanks,
kk

Bug#648115: bind9-host: please explain how to build with debugging symbols

2011-11-08 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: bind9-host
Version: 1:9.7.3.dfsg-1~squeeze3
Severity: normal

Hi,
Please include a README.Source to explain how to rebuild with debugging
symbols. I was trying to get a build of /usr/bin/host which i could run
in gdb to help with #648113 , but gave up after 3 tries and just put in the
bug as is.

First try:
- DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=debug dpkg-buildpackage -sa

GDB reports:
- warning: The current binary is a PIE (Position Independent
Executable), which GDB does NOT currently support. Most debugger
features will fail if used in this session.
Reading symbols from /usr/bin/host...(no debugging symbols
  found)...done.

Second try:
- Remove build-dep on hardening-wrapper, purge hardening wrapper.
- DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=debug dpkg-buildpackage -sa

GDB reports:
- Reading symbols from /usr/bin/host...(no debugging symbols
  found)...done.

Third try:
- export DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=debug
- DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=debug dpkg-buildpackage -sa

GDB reports:
- Reading symbols from /usr/bin/host...(no debugging symbols
  found)...done.

(Yes, I installed my new packages each time).

After these three tries I'm not sure what the remaining 'obvious'
options are, so please provide some documentation on how to do this.

thanks,
kk

Bug#647562: debmirror: adjust printout of downloaded/errored packages files

2011-11-03 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: debmirror
Version: 1:2.4.5
Severity: minor

Hi,
I've just started to use debmirror git head on stable again, and noticed
some issues.
This bug concerns the printout of packages. They were doing this:
Release gpg signature does not verify.

[ 42%] Getting: dists/squeeze/main/binary-mipsel/Packages.gzok

Hunk one of the patch adds back in the '... ' in front of the ok.

Hunk two removes the repeating of the filename when an error occurs.
Instead of this:

dists/squeeze-proposed-updates/contrib/binary-i386/Packages.diff/2011-08-01-1412.56.gz

We wind up with this:

Hope this doesn't cause regressions on anything != stable.
thanks,
kk

Bug#647342: RFP: derbyscoreboard -- Browser based roller derby scoreboard

2011-11-01 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: derbyscoreboard
  Version : 0.2.0
Upstream Author : Mr Temper mrtem...@carolinarollergirls.com
* URL : http://sf.net/projects/derbyscoreboard
* License : GPL3+ or Apache 2+
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : Web browser based roller derby scoreboard

I'm still trying to compose a good description for this package, so the
long description is still TODO I'm afraid. Something along the lines of:

Derbyscoreboard is a web browser based score and time tracking system for
Roller Derby games. It offers several features, including:
  * Mobile phone based time management
  * Mobile phone based score updating
  * A central control screen with all settings available
  * A projectable scoreboard
  * Exact tracking of game state for later reply.

The package currently embeds a number of jars. Some are provided in
Debian at the correct versions, most of them are different. I'm not
familiar enough with java to know if they could be trivially replaced,
so any adopter would have to take that on.

Also note that it bundles jdom-contrib, so may require it to be packaged
before this rfp can be fulfilled.

thanks,
kk

Hi,
please expand the manual to describe what --quick-subsampling and
--windowid do, and the restrictions around their use.

In particular, --windowid should mention the window has to be visible to
start recording (can't be on another workspace), and that if it stops
being visible the viewport keeps being recorded (rather then the
window).

the manpage for dopewars states:

The correct path for this file is /var/games/dopewars.sco . (The path appears to

Bug#640643: rest2web: __prune__ in dot directories is ignored

2011-09-05 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: rest2web
Version: 0.5.2~alpha+svn-r248-2
Severity: normal

Hi,
I've just confirmed this, so I thought I'd put in a bug report.

I have a site which contains these directories:

10:15:16 kgoetz@epicfail: ~/webrest $ ls -A
total 84K
drwxr-xr-x 6 kgoetz kgoetz 4.0K Aug 27 09:01 .bzr

-rw-r--r-- 1 kgoetz kgoetz 728 Sep 5 13:04 Makefile
[...]
drwxr-xr-x 3 kgoetz kgoetz 4.0K Sep 6 10:13 website-generator
[...]

Adding __prune__ to .bzr and website-generator, I expect both to be skipped.
Oddly, only website-generator is. .bzr is processed as normal.

I tried adding .bzr as a 'forced skip' with .svn in the codebase and had no
luck either, perhaps an issue with all dot directories?

thanks,
kk

Description : Daimonin is a fantasy MMORPG (Massively
Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game) which features a large
gameworld with engaging background, and is developing many fun and
unique features. It has a 2D-isometric perspective.

Are you planning to package the server or just the client? Will it
include the extra data packs?

Daimonin is open-source and accepts user-contributed content such as
maps, music, art, code, and writing. It is currently in its fifth
stable beta stage in which many new features are being added.

The file 'Artistic License' in the daimonin_mapmaker package (which
includes the server?) makes me worry about the dfsg freeness of some
parts. Could you get games team/legal list to offer their thoughts?
(Note neither is able to speak on behalf of the project, and ftpmasters
say of what gets in is final :)).

rest2web only provides a default template when used in force

 template files are found.

ok, that seems reasonable. In that case could the error make that
clear, rather then simply spitting a backtrace with [err]?

(btw, I'm aware of the source/time issues around this project having
read your other emails to the list.).

Bug#637484: /usr/bin/apt-ftparchive: apt-ftparchive doesn't create directories

2011-08-11 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: apt-utils
Version: 0.8.10.3+squeeze1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/apt-ftparchive
User: gnewsense-...@nongnu.org

hi,
apt-ftparchive doesn't create its needed directories, and doesn't mention this
in its manual page. It would be great if this could be fixed by creating the
directories, but simply documenting the behaviour would be nice.
thanks,
kk

Hi,

Could clear be given a different key? 'l' would appear to be available from a
quick look at the UI here :)

How does it differ from rfkill, already in the archive? Perhaps the

2011-08-03 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: gogoc

Severity: normal
Tags: patch ipv6

Hi,
I've just spent some time trying to work out how to make gogoc work
with either interface in my laptop, before discovering in the source
that if_prefix can be blank. (gogoc doesn't appear to dynamically switch
between interfaces, but it does let you stop the tunnel, ifdown wlan0;
ifup eth0; start tunnel).

Please consider the attached patch (or something like it) to help
others using this program.

thanks,

I've noticed that you changed gogoc to use a log file under /var/log

Would you please add a logrotate script to the package as well?
I doubt many people need more then a few weeks of connection logs and
at the moment it'll just grow forever.

Bug#632512: iceowl: please support 7 day vew for calendar

2011-07-02 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: iceowl
Version: 1.0~b1+dfsg2-2+squeeze2

It would be great to have a view that starts today or yesterday and goes for
5-7 days from that point. Its much more convenient if you use the calendar for
planning weekends to have them appear in the middle of the screen then right
over on one side, and allows a weeks context at all times.

Bug#632513: iceowl: please indicate what time it is currently

2011-07-02 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: iceowl
Version: 1.0~b1+dfsg2-2+squeeze2

hi,
there is no indicator in the calendar to show what the time is at the moment. a
little red bar as used in some other calendars could make a huge difference in
that regard.
A good example is the timeline addon, which does this nicely.
thanks,
kk

  Hi,
I've just manually moved a number of todo items out of my calendar
and into the todo bar on the side. it would be great if this was
possible with a simple drag and drop. At a pinch being able to do
it through the entry editing spot would do (perhaps make todos

This looks worthwhile. Since you set the upstream tag: could you

slipped through the gaps?

Anything I can do to help?

PS. Does someone know if Carl filed the bug he mentions in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=351746#49 ?

This is true (but not new).

Its not new, but i've never been angered enough to write a bug about it
until now :)

These days, there is actually a record of messages from past turns
stored the the server, if configured at runtime (the event cache).
But there's no way for the client to retrieve it on demand; it's sent
to the client when it first connects to a game. Perhaps some more
facilities in this area would be useful.

Nod. That would be nice.

as it lacks a hotkey for access (as far as i can find).

 F9?

fantastic!
I must have missed that one when i went through and tested all the f
keys before filing the ticket :/

Bug#631774: freeciv-client-gtk: research tab colour (red) is hard to see

2011-06-26 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: freeciv-client-gtk
Version: 2.2.5-1~kglocal
Severity: minor

When a technology is successfully researched, freeciv turns the 'Research' tab
red.

It would be good if it could use blue (like it does for the messages box)
instead.

Actually, you can find them at http://killyourtv.i2p.to/debian . I'd
recommend fetching the sources from the Ubuntu PPA that I'm running.
The packages for the most recent MTN build are at
https://launchpad.net/~i2p.packages/+archive/snapshots/+sourcepub/1728536/+listing-archive-extra
(the main page for the PPA is https://launchpad.net/~i2p.packages).
It'll definitely be less painful to get it from the PPA. Fetching the
dsc with dget should work fine too.

I would be happy to take over the ITP (assuming I wouldn't be
stepping on anyone's toes in doing so--this ITP seems kinda...dead).

Cheers,
