Bug#389913: dhelp: Doesn't work with thttpd (which is chrooted per Debian default)

2006-09-28 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: dhelp
Version: 0.5.23
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Dependencies are confused -- it Suggests: httpd, but with thttpd
(which provides httpd as well) it doesn't work, because thttpd
doesn't follow symlinks, so there is no way how to symlink
/usr/share/doc to /var/www/doc so that thttpd would read it. I am
not sure whether it is bug in dhelp or thttpd, but you should
aware of it (and maybe Suggest explicitly only http servers which
are known to work with dhelp?).

Are there any news about this?

After running -rc5 for a while, I tried just now -rc6 again and
everything works perfectly. I haven't changed anything, but
suddenly it works. Which is the same list of symptoms as with
the previous kernel versions -- first it doesn't work, then
without any explanation it does work (and it was after more than
just one reboot, there were multiple reboots in meantime).

Weird,

The function of the expert is not to be more right than other
people, but to be wrong for more sophisticated reasons.
-- Dr. David Butler, British psephologist
vimoutliner for Debian
--

1) Do not, I repeat, DO NOT follow installation instructions in
the upstream vo_readme.txt. It is not necessary (Debian
package should do all installation itself) and locations of
many files has been changed to follow needs of one centralized
installation and to be according to the Debian policies. If
you want to know where everything is located, run

dpkg -L vim-vimoutliner

2) Behavior of the package has changed from previous versions!
Scripts vo_checkbox.vim and vo_hoist.vim are now considered
stable and thus they could be sourced by the ingenious
mechanism controlled by run g:vo_modules_load variable in
   /etc/vim/vimoutlinerrc.

3) Upstream documentation (located in
   /usr/share/doc/vim-vimoutliner/README) mentions ,, as the
prefix to most VO commands. In reality, even the upstream
package actually uses the native Vim localleader variable,
which is set to \ (backslash) by default, so that a command
listed in the README file as ,,B -- Make body text start with
a space, is actually executed when you type \B (with default
   defintion of localleader).

If you want to use different localleader uncomment in
/etc/vim/vimoutlinerrc the following line and change the value
of the variable to whatever you want.

let maplocalleader = ,,this is prepended to VO key

4) For information how to use vimoutliner, you can use vim help
   under :he vimoutliner.

5) Two very useful plugins for VO -- hoist and checkbox -- ARE
enabled by default. Their status could be changed by changes
in the global variable g:vo_modules_load either in the VO
global configuration file /etc/vim/vimoutlinerrc or in
   personal configuration file ~/.vimoutlinerrc.

OK, what's the output of commands

:let mapleader
:let maplocalleader

? The truth is that all those commands are in reality
localleader- and localleadert etc. It is IMHO bug in
upstream documentation (I am Cc-ing upstream maintainer), which
I have tried to explain it in README.Debian of not-yet-uploaded
version of vimoutliner package (available on
http://matej.ceplovi.cz/progs/debian/vim-vimoutliner_0.3.4-5_all.deb;
could you install it and test it, please?). If you want to have
these commands really as ,,- ,,t etc, you have to uncomment line
20 in /etc/vim/vimoutlinerrc.

Let me know whether my new package actually works,

It can, but why should it?

For the same reason, why we have adm group in the first place --
so that privileged regular user (who is in group adm) can read

Hi,

could mention somewhere in decsription or names what kind of
modules this patch supports? When I was trying to find where are
GFS patches, I had to go through couple of hoops to find out --
if GFS was mentioned in description apt-cache search would find
it on a first attempt.

Bug#376042: vim-vimoutliner: vimoutlinerrc apparently ignored

2006-07-06 Thread Matej Cepl
On Thu 6. July 2006 15:00, you wrote:
 Is
 hi BT1 guifg=darkgreenctermfg=darkgreen
sufficient to put in there, or would some fancier syntax be
 better?

I believe it should be OK. Remember KISS principle! :-)

I notice the new system vimoutlinerrc seems to be
using some indirect variable setting syntax that I don't
 understand (let g:xxx = ).

Don't bother with g:vo_modules_load that much (but use them!).
The issue was how to allow global configuration of loaded
modules, when actual ru! commands can be issued only after main
vo_base.vim is loaded (which is automatically made with
~/.vimoutlinerrc). Corresponding piece of code, which makes this
working is this (it is kind of hairy, but I think you can read
it):

More sophisticated version of the modules loading; thanks to
Preben 'Peppe' Guldberg for telling me how to split string and
 make semi-lists with vim.
 - Matej Cepl
let tmp = g:vo_modules_load . ':'
let idx = stridx(tmp, ':')

while (idx != -1)
let part = strpart(tmp, 0, idx)
let tmp = strpart(tmp, idx + 1)
let idx = stridx(tmp, ':')
exec runtime! ftplugin/vo_ . part . .vim
endwhile

Conclusion, this is just one hack, which doesn't change behavior
of the rest of the system.

Greetings to San Francisco (I graduated with LLM from the other
hill in front of you -- USF Law School -- in 1997).

Best,

Matěj

If you confirm my suspicion, then this wouldn't be bug in VO, but
in your configuration (and improvement with VO which would
hopefully finally follow vim conventions more closely).

I am sorry, but I have lost a sponsor and forgot to ask for a new

Go ahead, install it and everything should work(TM). If not, let

Bug#376270: kdelibs-data: Cannot associate application/pdf with Graphics/KPDF

Package: kdelibs-data
Version: 4:3.5.3-1
Severity: normal

This one drives me really crazy, I have apparently screwed up
something in my mimelnk database and now I just cannot for the
world associate PDF files with Graphics/KPDF. Whenever I do it,
association dialog dutifuly updates settings (dialog with
thermomether is going all the way), but then when I click on .pdf
file in Konqueror (or Krusader, but that doesn't matter) I get
error message saying that kdeinit cannot launch
'nameofthefile.pdf'.

I can associate /usr/bin/kpdf with .pdf file directly (in the
dialog box check Use this application always), but then I get
kpdf item in the root of my K-menu.

I guess that this is close to be INVALID/WORKSFORME, but do you
have at least any idea, what might be wrong and how to clean up
my configuration, please?

THanks a lot,

Matěj

P.S.: Just to be sure, using kdpf 3.5.3 from testing.

 And also your /etc/cups/printers.conf.

Attached you will find two sets of files -- one when I tried to
use Gutenprint driver (didn't work -- only top of the test page,
until 26 cm -- was printed) and the other with plain Postscript
PPD from linuxprinting.org (the page you pointed me to).

Partly. You haven't actually given me any real details of the

 really do very much.

Does this make more sense?

to gutenprint (I am not sure, which part of it is to be blamed)
left my cypsys still expecting (now non-existent) foomatic

reconfiguration of cupsys drivers to the new ones, but couldn't
you make some kind of BIG FAT WARNING for user, that he/she

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough -- not the point was not how to run
GNUStep with DeJaVu, I know I can do that. The point was that I
wanted to get rid of Bitstream Vera fonts (because I really have
no use for them) and they are kept in my system only because
gnustep-back-common depends on them.

Cannot you make it ttf-bitstream-vera|ttf-dejavu , please?
I cannot use ttf-bitstream-vera, because it doesn't support
Eastern European languages. There is a free (and part of Debian)
extension of the original Bitstream Vera font DeJaVu
(http://dejavu.sourceforge.net), which provides very high quality
fonts including many non-Western (and non-European) glyphs.

Hi,

I was using your package (and I am using it again) 1.4-beta3c-1

there and they are not working in 1.4.0-1. Especially parsing of
all later added playlist formats (asx, smil) doesn't work at
all. E.g., when playing
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/meta/tx/nb/live_news_au_nb.asx
I have no problems with beta3, but 1.4.0 skips over that and
says that Playlist finished without playing anything. The same
goes for
rtsp://rmlivev8.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/worldservice/liveinfent.ra
which I can play with beta3, but it didn't work with 1.4.0.

Bug#348578: Can be all this mentioned in README.Debian, please?

2006-04-28 Thread Matej Cepl
Hi,

after reading all these bugs about /etc/nsswitch.conf I
understand what's going, but before that I was just clueless and
my conclusion was that it is just broken and didn't bother to do
anything more about. Can I ask that whole this issue (or at
least reference to these bugs) would be mentioned somewhere
in /usr/libdnss-mdns/README.Debian?

Thanks,

Matej

Bug#363428: kantiword does not follow user settings of paths

2006-04-18 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: antiword
Version: 0.37-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I have set my Desktop to ~/WP and thus kantiword script doesn't
work anymore. Also being a Czech with UTF-8 locale, I have to use
another locale, so I have introduced
~/.kde/share/config/kantiwordrc configuration file for this.
Also, when I used arrays for the configuration file I switched
the script from /bin/sh to /bin/bash -- I don't think there are
many computers without /bin/bash anyway.

Any comments?

Best,

Matej

You have to include in Debian new package -- dvipost -- used by

available at the same URL as above.

Bug#358535: diatheke should not Depend: on web-server

2006-03-22 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: diatheke
Version: 1.5.8-8
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

It is possible to use diatheke without web-server (for example,
I use it in a small script for mailing me a Psalm-a-day) and so
the correct relationship between packages should be Recommends
not Depends. From the Debian policy
(http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html):

Thanks,

matej

Depends
This declares an absolute dependency. A package will not be
configured unless all of the packages listed in its Depends
 field have been correctly configured.
The Depends field should be used if the depended-on package is
required for the depending package to provide a significant
 amount of functionality.
The Depends field should also be used if the postinst, prerm
or postrm scripts require the package to be present in order
to run. Note, however, that the postrm cannot rely on any
non-essential packages to be present during the purge phase.

Recommends
This declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency.
The Recommends field should list packages that would be
found together with this one in all but unusual
 installations.

Description : program for qualitative analysis of marked-up text

TAMS is simply a way of marking up documents so that a program
can then turn it into a database file for further analysis.
Unlike other qualitative research tools which try to be all
things to all people, TAMS follows Unix “do one thing and do it
well” policy: it transforms marked-up text into data that can be
analyzed by other tools. Before that can happen, however, the
text has to be coded. Word processor for text entry and coding
 Database software for analysis!

I don't have colons after Compose, but otherwise I have added
cs_CZ.UTF-8 line there (see attached). However, I still get ˇS

more strange that apparently X are able to decipher that Scaron
is (c5 a0) Š:

YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c5 a0) Š
XFilterEvent returns: False

but still I get ˇS. Is it problem of Qt-based applications or
some other technology, which is not used by Gnome and other
non-KDE applications (firefox has no problems with it)?
Actually, it is not that simple OOo (albeit with KDE skin)
reacts even more strange -- just writes plain S and caron is
silently omitted.

Any ideas?

Bug#345436: Thanks but not yet

2006-01-05 Thread Matej Cepl
Thanks editing /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/level3 kind of helped. This
is my InputDevice section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (one line broken
for this message):

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
# Driver keyboard
Driver kbd
Option CoreKeyboard
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel pc104
# Option XkbLayout us
# Option XkbModel inspiron
Option XkbLayout cz,us
Option XkbOptions \
compose:caps,grp:shifts_toggle,grp:led_scroll
Option XkbVariantqwerty
EndSection

And this coming from xprop (again, line broken for this message):

chelcicky:~$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = xorg, inspiron, cz_qwerty,us, \
, compose:caps,grp:shifts_toggle,grp:led_scroll
chelcicky:~$

When I have fixed level3 I got my Win keys working in KDE, but
KDE applications still cannot write Czech characters using
deadkey (non-KDE like firefox and xterm are fine). Nothing
interesting in any log.

Also I made your change, XkbVariant ceased to work, so I had to
download explicitly cz_qwerty keyboard (it DID work before I
made the change to level3 file).

Any idea?

Bug#346029: libqt3-mt: Deadkeys don't work with Qt-based applications and cz keyboard

2006-01-04 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: libqt3-mt
Version: 3:3.3.5-3
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I am not sure whether I should file this here or against the
xlibs-data package, but the problem shows itself only in Qt-based
applications (both KDE and non-KDE, like lyx-qt) so I am going
here. When pressing deadkey with a letter, combination of which
gives Czech letter with diacritical mark (e.g., zcaron), I get
caron and letter-z as two separate characters, ˇz. Mozilla, plain
xterm (not konsole) work in this regard correctly (there are
other keyboard related issues here -- #345436 collects many of
them, but I have also #345893 -- which makes me wonder whether it
is not bug of xorg after all). Unfortuantely, this makes all
Qt-based application practically unusable for all Czech users.

This is my keyboard section in xorg.conf (I have switched off
international keyboard support in KDE Control Center, so it
should be all that is there):

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver kbd
Option CoreKeyboard
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel inspiron # or pc104 doesn't matter
Option XkbLayout cz_qwerty
Option XkbOptions
compose:caps,grp:led_scroll,grp:alts_toggle
Option XkbVariantbasic
EndSection

and this is the output of xprop:

chelcicky:~$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = xorg, inspiron, cz_qwerty, basic,
compose:caps,grp:led_scroll,grp:alts_toggle
chelcicky:~$

Any thoughts?

Bug#272256: nail as a full replacement of mail

2005-12-19 Thread Matej Cepl
Hi,

Concerning compatibility between nail and mailx
http://nail.sourceforge.net says:

Linux distributions made the situation even more
confusing. They could only use the original Berkeley
Mail (System V mailx was closed source until the
OpenSolaris release in 2005). Yet because Mail and
mailx were sufficiently similar for most applications,
it seemed appropriate for many to also feature a mailx
command which was just Mail, thus not sufficient for
formal POSIX.2 conformance. Most distributions also
made mail invoke Mail, since Unix mail was also closed
source until January 2002.

[...]

Thus it is appropriate to call nail as mailx. If it is
called as Mail, a short shell script should be created
which sets the bsdcompat variable before invoking nail.
mail however is an entirely different command and should
be taken from the Heirloom Toolchest if an Open Source
version is desired.

Given the fact that we were calling mailx as mail anyway :-), I
do not think that making nail replacement of mail would do
things any worse. :-)

So why cannot you guys (whoever is maintainer) just fix this,
please?

Best,

Matěj

Agree -- is there somewhere patch available, or where do I find
patched package for make/cdb or what is the problem?

Bug#342582: openoffice.org-writer: Cannot change table in Bibliographic database with external ODBC source

2005-12-08 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: openoffice.org-writer
Version: 2.0.0-4
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

when trying to use bibus (http://bibus-biblio.sf.net) with OOo
native interface (i.e., setting up bibus database as an external
bibliographic source via ODBC) I cannot change OOo to read data
from particular table in the database, but OOo always picks the
alphabetically first table from the database (which is not the
correct one in the bibus case), even though all databases
(including the one OOo picked up) where checked off in
Tools/Filter Tables of OOBase, and even though I tried to use the
roll down button in the Bibliographic databases manager.
Unfortunately, that makes bibliographic support in OOo unusable
for me and thus (I am a PhD student writing my thesis) it makes
OOo as such unusable, so I have to stick with LyX for time being.

BTW, it doesn't matter whether the ODBC connection is set up from
SQLite (which has somehow unreliable ODBC driver, true) or from
MySQL (which should be OK).

See http://www.ceplovi.cz/matej/tmp/ooo-biblio/bibquery.png for
illustration of the incorrect behavior of OOo, and
http://www.ceplovi.cz/matej/tmp/ooo-biblio/oobase.png to show
that OOBase can read the database correctly.

Any workaround?

Bug#340444: aptitude: midclean required -- somewhere between autoclean and clean

2005-11-23 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.0-3
Severity: wishlist

For keeping /var/cache/apt/archives sweetly small, I would like
to have a command to keep all package files for packages which
are installed and remove everything else. autoclean does too
little for me (leaving package files which are not installed) and
obviously clean does too much (I am quite often on dial-up so
I would love to have my package files for additional security).
Just to explain better what I mean I hacked together simple (and
dirty) script in Python to illustrate it. See attached.

Thanks,

Bug#335793: My wonderful hack with help files from OOo doesn't work anymore

2005-11-07 Thread Matej Cepl
I have upgraded OOo 2.0 to 2.0.0-2 and suddenly my “beatiful”
hack for getting help in OOo (i.e., unpacking help directory
from OOo-build from RPMs to /usr/lib/openoffice/help doesn't
work anymore (OOo still complains about missing help). What has
changed that it doesn't work anymore and is there some way how
to fix (aside from recompilation of whole OOo :-), please?

Thanks a lot,

Bug#337530: openoffice.org-calc: OOo issue#57320 -- incorrect import of date format

Hi,

I have filed a bug on OOo issuezilla about this
(http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57320), but the
developers here refused it as possible Debian-build-related bug.
The problem is that when importing spreadsheet tables from
Peoplesoft (either as CSV, or Excel) I get weird error -- in SOME
cells date field get changed: month gets decreased by one. So
instead of 11/12/05 I get 11/11/05 in the OOCalc. It happens only
in some rows.

If I wouldn't have to I would rather not send out the
spreadsheets again, as they contain personal data which I should
care for under NDA. You can communicate more about these examples
with [EMAIL PROTECTED], who claims that he was able to import
them into his OOo without a problem.

Bug#337530: Acknowledgement (openoffice.org-calc: OOo issue#57320 -- incorrect import of date format)

2005-11-04 Thread Matej Cepl
Actually, it is getting more and more weird:

When I was able to open the file in OOo-RPM oocalc, I have of
course saved the file as .ods. Now, when I open it with
OOo-Debian (freshly from unstable), the bug is there again (see
attached example). When I went into the zip file, I found this
in the content.xml (broken lines for this message, it is cell
E3):

 table:table-cell office:value-type=date
office:date-value=1948-11-12
  text:p11/11/48/text:p
 /table:table-cell

office:date-value is correct, but text:p (which is what is
apparently displayed) is wrong.

Any thoughts?

Bug#329585: Workaround

2005-10-27 Thread Matej Cepl
I have ripped off help/ directory from the upstream RPM files and
replaced with it /usr/lib/openoffice/help. It seems to work (not
much testing, but three attempts to get help all ended in the
right place). It is totally Works For Me(TM), but if anybody is
interested all files are available at
http://www.ceplovi.cz/matej/progs/ooo-help-files.tar.bz2

Good luck,

Bug#335725: openoffice.org-core conflicts with openoffice.org-help-en, but alternative is not available.

2005-10-25 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: openoffice.org-help-en
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Just downloaded openoffice.org 2.0 from
http://people.debian.org/~rene/openoffice.org/2.x/ (which is
currently in NEW front) and it is missing help.
openoffice.org-help-en is available only in version
1.1+20040420-3, but that conflicts with openoffice.org-core which
requires (quite reasonably) at least 2.0.0, but that is not
available neither on pdo page nor in the debian repository
(checked on ftp.debian.org).

Bug#174145: Use gmane

2005-10-10 Thread Matej Cepl
There are many Debian lists covered by gmane.org (news2email
gateway), which provides RSS for its newsgroups. So for example
here are the options for debian-mentors
http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.mentors and
specifically you can get all messages from the list with
complete text from this feed
http://rss.gmane.org/messages/complete/gmane.linux.debian.devel.mentors.

Bug#330265: openclipart-svg: All pictures are not compressed

2005-09-26 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: openclipart-svg
Version: 0.17+dfsg-1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Would it be too much to ask for all .svg files to be compressed
with gzip? I know that hard disk space is cheap these days, but
still difference between 91MB and 211MB is considerable even with
my 40GB hard drive. And most graphic packages I know about (which
is not much I know) support gzipped svg.

Thanks,

Bug#328466: krusader: Key shortcut for making a link required

2005-09-15 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: krusader
Version: 1.60.0-1
Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I think %subj% says it all -- it seems to me that the only way
how to create links on current/selected file(s) is via
Drag-and-Drop and that's against all philosophy of OFS not to
provide key shortcut for this rather frequent operation. And of
course, that it would be nice if Krusader (contrary to
Ctrl-X,Ctrl-S of Midnight Commander) make links for all selected
files, not just for the current file.

Thanks for the great program (version 1.60 really makes huge step
for me in terms of stability and usability)!

Bug#320688: initscripts: Error message during bootclean.sh

2005-07-31 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: initscripts
Version: 2.86.ds1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

During every boot-up I get two times an error message claiming
that:

find: warning: you have specified the -maxdepth option after
a non-option argument -perm, but options are not positional
(-maxdepth affects tests specified before it as well as those
specified after it). Please specify options before other
arguments.

It seems to me that the problem is with line 53 of bootclean.sh
script and that the attached patch fixes the problem.

What do you think?

konsole (KDE terminal emulator) doesn't provide a symlink to
xterm, but it certainly honors -e and -name. I will file a bug
about the symlink thing and we will see what happens.
