Bug#804314: [rapidsvn] ssh-askpass dialog doesn't show anymore

2015-11-07 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: rapidsvn
Version: 0.12.1dfsg-3
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Since an update ssh-askpass dialog doesn't popup anymore during
updates and commits, rapidsvn hangs and I'm forced to close it.

As a workaround I run rapidsvn from the terminal, in this case I'm
able to enter the ssh password directly in the terminal window.

Rapidsvn seems to be the only program with this problem, and if I run
ssh-askpass from the terminal the popup window appears correctly.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Paolo

Bug#757077: Fwd: printer-driver-gutenprint: Updating ppd in printer queues during package updates

2014-08-06 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Sorry, I forgot to say that the printer was initially configured using the
CUPS web interface. But it was probably a year ago and I don't remember the
details.

Paolo

Bug#757077: Fwd: printer-driver-gutenprint: Updating ppd in printer queues during package updates

2014-08-04 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: printer-driver-gutenprint
Version: 5.2.10-3
Severity: wishlist
Tags: d-i

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate
***

   * What led up to the situation?

I updated printer-driver-gutenprint and my printer stopped working, the
error in printing job said "The PPD version (5.2.9) is not compatible with
Gutenprint 5.2.10.".

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I deleted the printer and I reinstalled because it was impossible to change
the printer
ppd. I selected a new one using the web interface, saved, but when I looked
again at the prenter's settings it was back to the original outdated ppd.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

That did the trick and the printer is working again, but then looking at
the logs
I noticed a message saying that running cups-genppdupdate.5.2 would have
fixed
the problem.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I was wondering if it would be possible to run cups-genppdupdate.5.2 after
the package update, either automatically or interactively (i.e. asking the
user if he/she wants to run the ppd updater).

Also, I was wondering why it wasn't possible to change the ppd using the web
interface.

Here are the relevant logs.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Paolo

Bug#740995: [gimp-plugin-registry]

2014-03-11 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: gimp-plugin-registry
Version: 5.20120621

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Dear Package Maintainer,

I see gimp-plugin-registry has been removed from testing, should we expect
a new version compiled with libglew1.10 or it will just be dropped from
Debian?

Thanks,

Paolo

Daniel Bolton: I installed gimp-plugin-registry when libglew1.7 (1.7.0-3)
was still available in testing and the filters work fine. libglew1.7 does
not seem to interfere with libglew1.10.

Bug#739443: Same problem with Debian Testing on a HP Probook 4540s laptop.

2014-02-27 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
I have exactly the same problem but the crash is triggered by opening a new
tab in Chromium.

I'm using Debian Testing with the 3.12-1-amd64 Kernel on a HP Probook 4540s
laptop with the following video card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
Thames [Radeon HD 7550M/7570M/7650M]

I also have the same segfault error and backtrace in my Xorg.0.log
unfortunately I reverted to the 1:13.12-3 drivers and restarted my laptop a
few times so I have lost the log file.

If you need me to do some test I can reinstall the 1:14.1~beta1.3-1 drivers.

Thanks,

Paolo

Bug#728135: More information.

2013-11-26 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Hi,

I can confirm the the bug is still present in kernel 3.11-2-amd64 but it
works fine in kernel 3.12-rc7-amd64. I haven't had a chance to
test 3.12-trunk-amd64 (which is the only 3.12 available in my repositories)
because it fails to compile the proprietary ATI fglrx kernel module and I
would have to reconfigure xorg.

Thanks,

Paolo

Bug#721888: [rapidsvn] Should depend on libsqlite3-0 version 3.8.0.1

2013-09-04 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: rapidsvn
Version: 0.12.1dfsg-1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
After a recent update rapidsvn fails to open my repository, I'm not sure
which upodate it was since last time I used it was about a week ago.

Every time I try to open my repository I get the following error:

Error while refreshing filelist (Couldn't perform atomic initialization
SQLite compiled for 3.8.0.1, but running with 3.7.17)

I solved the problem upgrading libsqlite3-0 from version 3.7.17 to
3.8.0.1 (available in unstable). Perhaps rapidsvn should be compiled for
libsqlite3-0 3.7.17 until libsqlite3-0 3.8.0.1 is available in testing
and rapidsvn should depend on the correct version of libsqlite3-0.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Paolo

Thanks, I overlooked that. When I tried to install the certificates
copying them in /usr/local/share/ca-certificates I saw none of them in
the list proposed by dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates so I assumed the
right way was to copy them in /usr/share/ca-certificates. I should have
read the documentation better.

That was just an example, I took the first I found in the list. I
installed about 100 root certificates from the Italian digital signature
issuers and I couldn't remember which I installed and which I didn't.

To me the problem is solved, thanks! However, copying a file with spaces
in /usr/share/ca-certificates probably shouldn't result in a broken
config file.

Thanks again and have a nice day,

Bug#717761: [ca-certificates] Cartificates with blank spaces in file name break ca-certificates.conf when running dpkg-reconfigure

2013-07-24 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: ca-certificates
Version: 20130610
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
If I add a new cerificate with blanks in the file name in
/usr/share/ca-certificates, when I run:

dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates

it adds a line for every part of the file name in ca-certificates.conf .

In example, if I try to add the certificate:

Actalis Authentication Root CA.crt

it adds the following lines to ca-certificates.conf:

Actalis
Authentication
Root
CA.crt

There is no way to stop the reconfigure script so the user is forced to
accept the broken configuration. Renaming the file and running
dpkg-reconfigure again doesn't remove the broken lines from
ca-certificates.conf which has to be cleaned manually. Stopping the script
leaves the package broken and it can be fixed only with a apt-get
-reinstall.

Thanks,

Paolo

Bug#606414: Bug#638970: Probably caused by acpi battery kernel module and fixed in kernel to 3.2.18-1

2012-06-07 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Hi,

It seems the bug, at least in my case, was caused by the acpi battery
kernel module reporting the battery as connected and disconnected
continuously.

Since I upgraded my kernel to 3.2.18-1 the battery icon stopped
flipping on and off and the cpu use by upowerd is pretty much normal.
upowerd --monitor shows a change in battery state every 20 seconds or so:

upower --monitor

Bug#638970: [upower] Same problem with HP ProBook 4510s

2012-04-29 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: upower
Version: 0.9.15-3

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I have the same problem, upowerd makes my CPU run at close to 100% all
the time, the battery is reported as connected and disconnected
continuously and the only way to make it stop is to either remove the
battery or kill upowerd.

I'm not sure when it started, the battery icon appearing and
disappearing it's probably several months but only recently I noticed
the 100% CPU issue. I'm not sure, maybe I didn't notice it before
because it seems to happen mostly when I leave the laptop on overnight.

This is probably a duplicate of bug #606414 and possibly also #596721
and #619343. It seemes several other Debian based distributions are also
affected, searching for "upowerd device
removed:/org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0" on google returns
lots bug reports.

Regards,

Paolo

Bug#606414: [upower] Same problem here probably caused by the battery

2012-04-28 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: upower

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I have the same problem and I believe it's caused by the battery,
upowerd runs pretty much all the time at 50% to 90% CPU.

If I remove the laptop battery the problem disappears and CPU usage goes
back to normal (0% most of the time).

If I monitor upowerd I can see that the battery state is continuously
updated:

The battery icon in gnome shell keeps appearing and disappearing every
(more or less) 15 seconds as if the battery was being plugged and
unplugged. When the battery icon is visible it reports the battery
status as charging, 97%. The battery is never reported as 100% full,
even if the laptop has been plugged to the AC power all night.

If I kill the upowerd process the battery icon stops flipping on and
off, it's visible all the time and it reports the status as charging,
97% (fixed).

This is very annoying because, since several packages depend on upowerd,
removing it is not an option and on Debian Testing and there is no other
version in the repositories. All I can do to work around this problem is
to either work without a battery or kill the upowerd process when it
starts hogging the cpu time.

Thanks,

Paolo

Bug#650259: [gnome-power-manager] Battery icon in gnome panel keeps appearing and disappearing every 20-30 sec.

2011-11-28 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 3.0.2-3
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Battery icon in gnome panel keeps appearing and disappearing every 20-30
sec.

The battery icon has the lightning rod as if charging and if I click on
it it says "Laptop Battery 100%".

This is especially annoying because the battery icon is the right most
in the gnome shell top bar and all the icons keep shifting to the left
every 20-30 seconds. Sometimes I try to click on the volume icon but
because of the shift I click on the network manager.

Also, I'm afraid that if a real charging and discharging of the battery
is triggered every 30 seconds this laptop battery won't last very long.

Thank you,

Paolo.

Bug#625806: kernel erroneously reports continuous changes in the connected displays

2011-11-27 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for looking in to this, I now use testing (wheezy) with kernel
3.1.0-1-686-pae and everything works fine.

In general I had no problem with display geometry with the 3.x kernels,
I tried all the available ones in testing, sid and experimental since
3.x became available.

Only a couple of times, after updating some gnome packages the display
size is set to 1024x768 instead of 1366x768. Just that, no flickering
and no crash. I assume that it's a gnome issue since it happened only
after upgrading gnome related packages and a reboot solved the problem
in both cases.

This is unrelated, I've been trying all the available kernels because in
the new gnome 3 interface (gnome shell) I can see the battery icon
appearing and disappearing every 30 seconds or so, as if after charging,
the battery starts discharging again for a few seconds and then
recharging again. I haven't reported this yet because I still don't
understand which package causes this issue.

Regards,

Paolo.

I bought a new usb bluetooth adapter and now everything works fine.

If you think it may be useful for research purposes I can send you the
one that causes the problem by mail. Maybe you can figure if it's a bug
in the software triggered by specific hardware or simply a faulty
bluetooth adapter causing the system to crash.

The hardware details from lsusb for the old one (causing system crash) are:

Bug#644273: [rabbitvcs-nautilus] rabbitvcs-nautilus suddenly not working anymore

2011-10-04 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: rabbitvcs-nautilus
Version: 0.13.1-2
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I've been happily using rabbitvcs-nautilus for the past several months
but since a few days ago it's gone.

I can't see the CVS icons in the local copy files and the context menu
(right-click) rabbitvcs items are gone.

I suspect it was one of the latest updates although I don't know which,
in the past few days I updated some python packages including:

python-qt4_4.8.3-4+b1_i386.deb
python-nautilus_0.6.1-1+b2_i386.deb
python2.7_2.7.2-5_i386.deb
python2.7-minimal_2.7.2-5_i386.deb
python-qt4-dbus_4.8.3-4+b1_i386.deb
libpython2.7_2.7.2-5_i386.deb

Purging and reinstalling didn't help.

Is there any test I can do to help you find the problem?

Thank you,

Paolo.

Thank you Florian,

I plan to repeat the whole process this weekend (upgrading from 9.0 to
9.1), this time I will make sure to keep the whole output, log files,
config, etc. Then I will post the result.

Have a nice day,

Paolo

No, I left everything as default (as installed by the deb package).

It doesn't seem to be the case, however I forgot to mention this is not
the first time I upgrade postgres on this machine, sure I did it from
8.3 -> 8.4 -> 9.0 -> 9.1, perhaps the upgrade script kept importing some
old settings from the previous version.

This weekend I will purge 9.1, reinstall 9.0 and restore all the
databases. Then I will repeat the upgrade process again to see if I can
repeat the issue.

Thanks again,

Paolo.

Hi Christoph,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I haven't tried that, after I got the error the first time (after the
pg_upgradecluster from 9.0 to 9.1) I purged version 9.0 and retried to
start postgres 9.1 but I got the same error. Rebooting the machine did
not help either.

I don't know if this is relevant but the converted cluster contained
thousands of users and 2 databases, one about 15 GB and the other about
40 GB.

To fix the problem I had to purge and reinstall 9.1 (erasing all the
data) and restored the database from a backup (Note that at this point I
restored only the smaller of the databases).

If you want I can make some more test this weekend, in example I can
purge 9.1, reinstall 9.0, restore the databases and try to upgrade again
to 9.1. In this case, is there a a recommended debug/verbose mode for
pg_upgradecluster?

Regards,

Paolo

Package: postgresql-9.1

I was running postgres 9.0 and I decided to upgrade to 9.1.

I installed the new 9.1 package, and then ran the following commands as
postgres user:

$ pg_dropcluster 9.1 main --stop

$ pg_upgradecluster 9.0 main

At which point it converted all the databases, unfortunately I lost the
output but I remember the conversion was successful.

After the conversion however postgres 9.1 failed to start, the full
error is:

$ /etc/init.d/postgresql start

Bug#637908: More information.

2011-08-28 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Hi Nobuhiro,

Thanks for checking, I made a few more tests and here is the results:

1. I activate bluetooth in gnome (gnome-bluetooth) and I scan for my
blackberry phone (8900), the system crashes and I have to power off the
laptop to restart;

2. I boot the laptop without loading gnome and from the console I run
hcitool scan. After a few seconds hcitool prints my phone name and mac
address and then the system immediately crashes.

Right after the crash I can see lots of output in the console but
unfortunately, it doesn't get logged in /var/log/messages.

One note on tests 1 and 2. If the phone's bluetooth is switched off and
there are no other devices in range everything works fine (no crash).

3. I start a gnome session and turn on the bluetooth, if I turn on the
bluetooth in my phone and I attempt to connect to the laptop a crash
occurs, the laptop is still responsive for a while but the system is
unstable.

This time some of the output gets logged, See attached messages.txt. The
relevant logs start at line 175 [31580.468814].
The last line refers to when I unplugged the usb dongle, afterwards the
system became unresponsive and I had to power off.

The bluetooth device is a very small usb bluetooth dongle and if I'm not
mistaken it should be an Asus.

Since the bluetooth dongle is unusable on this system, I have no problem
mailing it to you if you wish to test it.

Please, let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Regards,

Paolo.

The difference with most reports is that Icedove has always been working
fine.

The solution suggested by Marco (LD_BIND_NOW=1 icedove) breaks Enigmail
and possibly other plugins.

Below is the list of packages in /var/cache/apt/archives which have been
accessed yesterday (therefore probably installed/updated) so it could be
one of them.

Bug#619457: Problem with kernel 2.6.38

2011-05-05 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Hi Ben,

As you suggested I cloned and reassigned the bug report, the new one is
#625806.

Thank you for your help,

Bug#619457: Update.

2011-05-04 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
A couple of days ago I installed the latest experimental kernel (3.6.39)
and since then everything is fine, no more crashes.

I believe it may be a bug in the video card kernel module (perhaps i915)
that causes gnome-settings-daemon to crash.

If you have no objections I would like to reassign this to the kernel
maintainers.

Thanks,

Paolo.

Bug#619457: Info from 31 march

2011-04-12 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Please, note that this information is from the 31st of march 2011, I
attempted to send it several times but it was always ignored:

I just installed kernel 2.6.38-2-686-bigmem and now again it crashes all
the time.

The results of lsmod for both 2.6.38-1 [4] (which crashed only once)
and 2.6.38-2 [5] (which crashes every time) seem different.

So far different kernels different behavior:

2.6.32No crash
2.6.37Always crashes
2.6.38-1 No crash (crashed once)
2.6.38-2 Always crashes

Also, I noticed that, when it crashes, in gnome's Monitor Preferences I
have two monitors but no external monitor is actually connected to the
laptop [1].

The second monitor is set as off, if I set it as on the size is 848x480 [2].

Making the screenshot I get a desktop image of 2214x768 although the lcd
panel of this laptop is 1366x768 [3].

I'm not really sure this is a gnome, xorg or kernel bug, please reassign
it if you think it's not a a gnome issue.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Paolo.

Bug#619457: Other info.

2011-04-12 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
It now crashes also when returning from the screensaver,
.xsession-errors contains the following lines:

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 5605 error_code 8 request_code 150 minor_code 21)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Also, I tried to send more infomation on the 31st of march about this
bug but the info never appeared in the bug report. I tried to resend the
email several times but it seems it is just ignored.

Regards,

Paolo.

Bug#619457: More information

2011-04-11 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
I have more information on this bug.

1. First I have to correct my previous update, the line:
2.6.38-1 Always crashes
Should have been:
2.6.38-2 Always crashes

2. Since I last reported the bug, both kernel, xorg and
gnome-settings-manager have been updated but the bug is still present
and GSM crashes every time shortly after login. Here is the versions of
the packages:
gnome-settings-daemon_2.30.2-3_i386.deb
linux-image-686-bigmem_2.6.38+33_i386.deb
xserver-xorg_1%3a7.6+6_i386.deb
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.14.0-4_i386.deb

3. I found a way to prevent the crash most of the times:
  a. Login on gnome as usual;
  b. As soon as gnome starts loading press ctrl+alt+f1 to switch to a
 text only console;
  c. Wait until gnome finishes loading (Until the hard disk led
 stops blinking);
  d. Switch back to the graphic console with ctrl+alt+f8;

Thank you,

Paolo.

Bug#619972: [gnome-power-manager] Laptop left with blank screen after resuming from suspend

2011-03-28 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.32.0-2
Severity: grave

- --- Please enter the report below this line. ---
On a HP ProBook 4510s, the power management is set to suspend when the
lid is closed while running on battery.

When the lid is reopened gnome never resumes normal operation, the
screen is left blank with only the mouse pointer showing.

I tried switching between consoles (ctrl+alt+f1) then back to gnome
(ctrl+alt+f7) but it didn't help. All I can do is switching to a new

Bug#609336: [pgdesigner] pgdesigner crashes with a "CApp.MenuProjectUpdate.1435: #29: Invalid object" error on new project.

2011-01-08 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: pgdesigner
Version: 1.2.17-1
Severity: grave

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I just installed pgdesigner but it's unusable in my system. It keeps
crashing whenever I try to open a project, create a new project or
import from db (I didn't try other menu items/buttons).

The console messages I get are:

pa...@saturn:~$ pgdesigner

3: CApp._projectCreate.390

5: CApp.MainForm_Click.615

Searching the internet for "CApp.MenuProjectUpdate.1435: #29: Invalid

Please let me know if you want me run more tests.

Bug#597600: Acknowledgement (postgresql-9.0: pg_upgrade fails because it can't find pg_upgrade_support.so)

2010-09-21 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I managed to run pg_upgrade after installing:

postgresql-server-dev-8.4
postgresql-server-dev-9.0

and relative dependencies.

Perhaps the script should stop when it doesn't find pg_config, instead
it just displays the following lines:

sh: /usr/lib/postgresql/8.4/bin/pg_config: No such file or directory
sh: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.0/bin/pg_config: No such file or directory

Then continues with the consistency checks so the user has the
impression that everything is fine.

Three more notes:

1. I had to run the script from /tmp because the postgres user didn't
have permission to create delete_old_cluster.sh in my home directory.
Perhaps it should be saved in /var/lib/postgresql/9.0/main/ rather than ./

2. postgresql-9.0 installs two postgresql.conf, I find it confusiong.
Are both necessary? If I'm not mistaken 8.4 was installing just one in
/var/lib/postgresql/9.0/main/

/etc/postgresql/9.0/main/postgresql.conf
/var/lib/postgresql/9.0/main/postgresql.conf

3. pg_upgrade was failing to start the old 8.4 server because it looks
for postgres 8.4 config file postgresql.conf in
/var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/ instead of /etc/postgresql/8.4/main/

The command that failed was:

"/usr/lib/postgresql/8.4/bin/pg_ctl" -l "/dev/null" -D
"/var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main" -o "-p 5432 -c autovacuum=off -c
autovacuum_freeze_max_age=20" start >> "/dev/null" 2>&1

To solve this I had to copy postgresql.conf in
/var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/.

Bug#597600: postgresql-9.0: pg_upgrade fails because it can't find pg_upgrade_support.so

2010-09-20 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: postgresql-9.0
Version: 9.0.0-1
Severity: important

I just installed postgresql 9.0 from sid, installation went fine but when I try
to run
pg_upgrade to upgrade a postgres 8.4 cluster I get the following error:

/usr/lib/postgresql/9.0/bin/pg_upgrade -d /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main -D

sh: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.0/bin/pg_config: No such file or directory
Performing Consistency Checks

Checking old bin directory (/usr/lib/postgresql/8.4/bin)ok

Checking new bin directory (/usr/lib/postgresql/9.0/bin)ok

pg_upgrade_support.so must be created and installed in
/pg_upgrade_support.so

Please note that, although not visible in the above pasted output, the error
line I see in the terminal
looks like the following:

pg_upgrade_support.so must be created and installed in [0006]pgrade_support.so

[0006] represents a non ascii character which I see as a square containing the
numbers 0006 on
two lines (if it's not clear I can send you a screenshot).

Please, let me know if you need more information.

Hi Marco,

Sorry for not replying sooner, unfortunately the the LOM port of the
Netra T1 broke (RX works, TX doesn't), so it's very hard to test
different configurations. If the machine doesn't initialize the network
the only option I have is to remove the hard disk and edit the
configuration on a different server.

We have another Netra T1 but it's in a box and I didn't have the time to
install it yet, as soon as I have any news I will let you know.

Have a nice sunday,

Paolo.

Bug#575134: nautilus: properties window extends outside of the screen limit

2010-03-23 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.28.4-1
Severity: minor

On files with a large number of keywords the properties window extends
outside of the screen limit.

In my case, it happens in faxes I receive by email. It seems the fax
service provider is using an ocr and is saving the resulting text in
the "keywords" field of the tiff file.

Maybe the document data tab should have a scrollbar or the keyword text
could be limited to a few lines.

I attach a screenshot of the defect, please note that the scrambled text
is just the result of ocr on a poor quality fax.

Regards,

Paolo.

Bug#572951: udev: Upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze breaks network, cdrom on Sun Netra T1 105

2010-03-19 Thread Paolo Scarabelli

Hash: SHA1

Hi Marco,

Thanks for the hint.

As I said, deleting 70-persistent-net.rules solves the network problem
but every time I reboot the server
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules is recreated and at the next
reboot the network interfaces don't work anymore.

As a temporary workaround I moved
/lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules so the rules for the
network interfaces are not recreated.

I believe the fact the two interfaces share the same mac address has
something to do with this.

When I will have some spare time I will look into a real solution (and
for /dev/hdc too).

Thanks again and have a nice day,

Paolo.

2010-03-08 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.11.11-1+b2
Severity: normal

I'm experiencing the same problem on squeeze sparc64.

Aptitude always segfaults everytime I quit, with one exception: if I open it
and close it without updating (or doing anything else) it exits just fine.

I also experience a segfault when it finishes downloading a
package to install. In this case aptitude exits when the progress bar at the
bottom reaches 100%. However, it doesn't happen all the time.

I installed aptitude debug symbols but the gdb backtrace stops with an
error:

Bug#572951: udev: Upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze breaks network, cdrom on Sun Netra T1 105

2010-03-07 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: udev
Version: 151-2
Severity: normal

After upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze, cdrom and network adapters stopped
working.

Deleting both 70-persistent-cd.rules and 70-persistent-net.rules
from /etc/udev/rules.d and rebooting solved the problem.

70-persistent-net.rules has been recreated after boot,
70-persistent-cd.rules has not.

I paste a few information below. Please, let me kow if you need anything
else.

Have a nice day,

Paolo.

This is the broken version of 70-persistent-net.rules:

 BEGIN
# This file was automatically generated by the /lib/udev/write_net_rules
# program, probably run by the persistent-net-generator.rules rules file.
#
# You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on a single line.

SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="08:00:20:da:66:76",

 END

The newly generated and working one:

2010-03-05 Thread Paolo Scarabelli

I can confirm this bug is still present in nautilus 2.8.4-1.

If I have gnome assistive technologies enabled nautilus becomes
extremely slow working on large directories.

In example, if I try to browse /usr/bin, which contains over 3600 files,
nautilus hangs with the processor running at 100% for minutes. I'm not
sure how long it would take because after 15 minutes I usually kill the
process.

The problem is also on delete, if the thrash has lots of files it takes
forever to delete files in any folder.

I took me weeks to understand this was related to assistive
technologies, until yesterday I was pondering to switch to a different
file manager thinking my laptop (P4 mobile, 3GHz, 1GB RAM) wasn't up to
the job anymore.

If it's not possible to fix it perhaps it shouldn't be enabled by
default (not sure this is the case but I can't recall ever enabling it)
and there should be a warning that performance will possibly degrade.

Please, let me know if I need to open a new bug report or I should post
more details about my system.

Have a nice day,

Paolo.

2010-01-25 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Sorry for my late reply, I now have problems triggering the crash.

I disabled the "lock screen..." option in gnome screen saver settings to
check if it the problem was related to the password dialog. Now it
doesn't crash anymore, not even enabling the lock screen option again.

I attach a backtrace generated by bug buddy when it reported the bug to
gnome.org a few days ago. Since at that time I didn't install any of the
needed debug symbols I doubt it could be very helpful.

Additionally, after bug-buddy reported the bug I received an email
indicating that this bug is a duplicate of this:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=597914

I will keep monitoring this machine hoping to trigger the crash again,
if it happens I will post a full backtrace.

Have a nice day,

Paolo.

Bug#566706: gnome-panel: Gnome panel crashes when unlocking screen from screen saver

2010-01-24 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: gnome-panel
Version: 2.28.0-3
Severity: normal

Most of the times I unlock the screen from the screensaver gnome panel
crashes. As soon as I close the gnome bug report window gnome panel
resumes normally.

I doubt this is somewhat related but a few days ago some of the icons in the
gnome menu went missing, I'm not sure but I think they were mostly non-gnome
program lauchers. for example kompare and konqueror were disabled (I had to
enable them again with alacarte) while netbeans launcher was missing and I had
to recreate it.

Regards,

Paolo

Bug#566515: Printing most pdf files from evince hangs laserjet printer

2010-01-23 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: evince
Version: 2.28.2-1
Severity: important

Trying to print (most but not all) pdf files on a HP LaserJet 4050 using Evince
hangs the
printer. This doesn't happen using other pdf viewers.

Printing from Evince used to be just fine until recently so I assume the bug
was introduced in a recent update.

I found a bug report on ubuntu karmic which seems a perfect match to my problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/cairo/+bug/419143

Please, let me know if you need more information.

Regards,

Paolo.

Hi Fathi,

After your suggestion I upgraded libqscintilla2-5 from testing
(libqscintilla2-5_2.3.2-1.1_i386.deb) to unstable
(libqscintilla2-5_2.4-4_i386.deb) and now everything works fine. Thanks!

If you need me to do more tests with the previous configuration just let
me know.

Have a nice weekend,

Bug#550628: cairo-dock: Cairo-dock hangs gnome at startup after apt upgrade

2009-10-11 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: cairo-dock
Version: 2.0.8.2-1
Severity: important

After an apt upgrade, cairo-dock now hangs gnome at start up:

After logging in, the gnome desktop starts loading but it hangs after
displaying the gnome panel (but no icons on it), no desktop image is
loaded either. It's not even possible to switch to a different console
using ctrl+alt+f1 and the only way to exit is to hard reset the computer.

Gnome loads properly if I disable cairo-dock from the startup applications
list. In this case, once Gnome has done loading, I can manually run
cairo-dock from the terminal without problems.

The command used to start cairo-dock (both manually and in the startup
applications list) is:
/usr/bin/cairo-dock -o --keep-above

Compiz is installed but not used.

The packages I upgraded are:
libgl1-mesa-dev_7.6-1_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-dri_7.6-1_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-glx_7.6-1_i386.deb

I has been working fine with this processor for years but I understand
there are thousands of different hardware combinations and the kernel
has to work flawless for everybody.

I'll keep using speedstep_lib instead of p4_clockmod. Besides having
just two available frequencies it seems to work just as fine.

Thank you for looking in to this.

I just reinstalled ssh-askpass-gnome 1:5.1p1-7 after updating several

Unfortunately I don't know which upgrade fixed it.

I guess the bug can be closed now.

Package: universalindentgui
Version: 1.1.0-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Using the -v 0 option has the same result (no additional information is
printed).

Trying with --help pops up a window warning that an invalid parameter has been
found and gives me a list of possible parametes. Clicking Ok (the only
option) just closes the window and types "Invalid parameter found. Allowed
parameters are..." in the console.

Reinstalling the package didn't help.

Bug#545804: ssh-askpass-fullscreen: Doesn't display on top of other windows

2009-09-09 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: ssh-askpass-fullscreen
Version: 0.3-2
Severity: important

ssh-askpass-fullscreen login window doesn't open on top of the other windows
making it difficult to notice that a password is requested. I never used this
package
before but I assume the window should show on top of the others and stay
always on top.

A few notes:
- even if the login window is below the others it still captures the keyboard
input.
- it's still possible to switch between applications and interact with them.
i.e.
clicking on links in the browser and other programs, using the gnome windows
list, etc;
- focusing (clicking) on the login window brings it to the front and from that
moment
it's not possible to interact with other applications (normal behaviour).

Regards,

Paolo.

I just updated ssh-askpass-gnome package to version 1:5.1p7 but the
problem persists.

Also, I noticed some programs (netbeans) cannot login using
ssh-askpass-gnome thus making this package unusable for me.

ssh-askpass-fullscreen works (but the login window doesn't display on
top of others windows).

Paolo.

Bug#544394: linux-image-2.6.30-1-686: Console terminal flickers after boot using radeonfb

2009-08-31 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-1-686
Version: 2.6.30-6
Severity: normal

After upgrading from Lenny to Testing the console starts flickering at boot
making
the text only console unusable. I'm not sure it's a kernel-image 2.6.30 bug but
blacklisting radeonfs the problem disappars.

Details:
- Grub loads and displays properly;
- Right after the boot process starts, the console displays a few lines
properly then
it starts flickering; The flickering is not very strong and although the text
is unreadable
I can still see the text lines (they look like tv static).
- X starts properly, no flickering;
- If I switch to different text only terminals from X (ctrl+alt+f*) the text in
the terminals is flickering;
- blacklisting radeonfb the problem disappears;
- I tried to pass different parameters to the kernel at boot time in an attempt
to force a different refresh
rate but it didn't help: video=radeonfb:1024x768...@60,
video=radeonfb:1024x...@60,
  video=radeonfb:1024x...@60-16, video=radeonfb:1024x...@16-60, video=radeonfb.
- Without the "video=radeonfb" parameter makes no difference (I assume radeonfb
is loaded by default).
- I tried to upgrade console-tools to the latest version in unstable but it
made no difference;
- I tried to reconfigure with dpkg-reconfigure the following packages but it
made no difference:
  initramfs-tools, console-tools.
- I tried to rebuild grub.cfg with grub-mkconfig but it made no difference;
- This is probably not specific of this kernel package because booting with
other kernels makes no
difference. I tried to boot using the kernel I've been using in lenny prior
upgrading to testing:
2.6.26 Lenny and 2.6.29 Lenny backports.
- I'm not sure is related, but in /var/log/messages I have lots of errors like
the following:
"glxinfo:9514 freeing invalid memtype" and the fps measured with glxgears is
lower than it was before
  upgrading.

Please, let me know if you need a picture of the text flickering or any other
info.

Have a nice day,

Paolo.

Bug#540413: linux-image-2.6.30-bpo.1-686: ondemand cpu frequency scaling not working

2009-08-07 Thread Paolo Scarabelli
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-bpo.1-686
Version: 2.6.30-3~bpo50+1
Severity: important

The ondemand cpu frequency scaling governor doesn't work (or is not built in
the kernel). I had no problem with previous kernel versions (up to 2.6.29).

The frequency scaling works if I use a different governor (powersave,
userspace, etc) but it doesn't change the frequency automatically anymore.

Sorry if I reported the bug the bug incorrectly or more then once, it's the
first time I use the reportbug tool.

Have a nice day,

Paolo.

Dear Package Mantainer,

cpufreq_ondemand doesn't work in this laptop with this kernel. In previous
kernels (up to 2.6.29) was working fine but I hed to add it in /etc/modules.

It seems cpufreq_ondemand module is either missing or compiled in the kernel.

CPU scaling on this laptop's processor (p4 mobile 3ghz) works only with
p4_clockmod, cpufreq_ondemand seems to be the only one which automatically
scales the frequency based on cpu load.

cpufreq_conservative doesn't work.

This is my first bug report, I apologize in advance if this report is
incomplete or wrong in some way.

Please, let me know if you need more information or there is anything else I can
do.

Best Regards,

Paolo Scarabelli
