Bug#1032250: xfdesktop4: Launcher icons start from ~/Desktop rather than ~

2023-03-02 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xfdesktop4
Version: 4.18.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have a bunch of launcher icons on the desktop to start terminals in
particular places, or other similar activities. They all used to begin
with $HOME as the working directory (shown by a shell prompt). After a
recent update they now all begin in ~/Desktop instead. This broke a
few launchers entirely, which did depend on paths to specific things.

Bug#1029582: claws-mail: Processing rules don't apply to newly-created folders

2023-01-24 Thread Paul Evans
Package: claws-mail
Version: 4.1.1-2+b1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have some pre-processing rules set to apply a colour to mails I've
sent. E.g.

   Condition: from matchcase "leon...@leonerd.org.uk"
   Action:color 5

These work fine on most of my "old" mail folders I've had for years.

But if I now create a new folder, the rules won't apply to any mails
that get filed into it.

Hi,
your Debian won't install from my DVD, would it work better to select boot
options and choose "Network" or I tried already the boot CD/DVD option and
it did not work. God Bless and blessed be

Bug#720521: claws-mail: Some new messages appear "old" instead

2013-08-22 Thread Paul Evans
Package: claws-mail
Version: 3.9.2-1
Severity: normal

I'm using claws-mail pointed at my IMAP server (dovecot, also from
debian/testing). Most of the time, the "new" and "old" flags behave just
fine.

But occasionally, a message in a thread will not appear as "new",
instead only "old". I know that happens when the folder is refreshed
after new, but this isn't that. It happens to later messages in a
thread, after earlier ones that are still "new". See attached
screenshot.

I don't think there's an pattern to the messages - just occasionally
(maybe 1 in 100 or so? I haven't counted) it will happen.

Bug#719228: xfce4-terminal: Does not understand DECRQM, yet claims to be TERM=xterm

2013-08-09 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xfce4-terminal
Version: 0.6.2-3
Severity: normal

The DECRQM sequence (CSI ? ... $ p) is important for programs to be able
to query the current settings of modes, either to be able to restore
them after exit, or just to see what the settings are or probe for
supported features.

A real xterm responds to this. xfce4-terminal, while claiming to be an
xterm (by setting TERM=xterm) does not; instead leaving unprocessed CSI
output directly on the screen. I would copy-paste it here but I can't,
because the output contains -literal- Escape bytes and that would upset
vim, and possibly your mail client ;)

The effect can be observed by

 $ echo -e '\e[?25$p'

A terminal supporting DECRQM should reply something like:

 ^[[?25;1$y

(which, since bash/readline don't understand the response, will just be
printed raw into your next prompt line)

xfce4-terminal however, raw-prints the query bytes, including the
literal U+001B of the leading Escape byte, turning it into the little
square-box pango substitution character.

(Also it could be argued as a second bug that valid but unrecognised CSI
sequences really ought to be stripped from the stream and not displayed
as raw bytes of text; doubly-so should not be displayed with literal
Escape characters in the terminal text buffer).

Bug#719229: claws-mail: Prompts for SMTP password despite being asked not to

2013-08-09 Thread Paul Evans
Package: claws-mail
Version: 3.9.2-1
Severity: normal

I have an account with IMAP and SMTP authentication. The "Send" tab of
the account's configuration has SMTP Auth ticked, but the user ID and
password fields left blank. It says "If you leave these entries empty,
the same user ID and password as receiving will be used."

I have the user ID set for Receive, but not password, so I'm prompted on
startup for this. This is fine. But I was expecting this to mean that
same password is remembered and used for SMTP send, but it isn't. After
starting Claws, the first time I try to send mail it will ask again for
the SMTP password, which is the same as receiving.

Should it not be reusing that remembered IMAP password?

Bug#709245: sawfish: Fails to cope with windows with rediculous maximum size

2013-05-21 Thread Paul Evans
Package: sawfish
Version: 1:1.5.3-2.1+b1
Severity: normal

Recent versions of Iceweasel have been setting large values for maximum
window size; e.g. as claimed by xprop:

WM_NORMAL_HINTS(WM_SIZE_HINTS):
program specified minimum size: 18 by 115
program specified maximum size: 1073741824 by 1073741824
window gravity: NorthWest

sawfish does not cope with this on resize. Any attempt to resize the
window immediately sets it to 0 pixels wide or tall.

This can be worked around by manually deleting the size hint property
using

 $ xprop -remove WM_NORMAL_HINTS
 [click the iceweasel window]

 $ sawfish-client -f restart

After doing this the window may be freely resized.

2012-11-25 Thread Paul Evans

Current version in debian is still 278; this is rather old by now. There
are several updates in later versions that I would like to make use of.
Ideally at least version 282 would be lovely.

Thanks,

Bug#627841: manpages-dev: termios(3) does not mention _POSIX_VDISABLE

2011-05-24 Thread Paul Evans
Package: manpages-dev
Version: 3.27-1
Severity: minor

GNU libc / Linux allows disabling a c_cc setting by giving it the
special value _POSIX_VDISABLE. This fact is not mentioned anywhere in
the termios(3) manpage. Perhaps it ought to?

Non-portable code might simply set 0, which happens to be its value on
Linux, but this leads to failures on other OSes, because it has a
different value on most BSDs. There, it has the effect of setting
Ctrl-Space (NUL, 0x00) to the special key instead.

Bug#586096: bzr-svn: Partial commit breaks status/diff of uncommitted files

2010-06-16 Thread Paul Evans
Package: bzr-svn
Version: 1.0.2-2
Severity: normal

1. svn co {some URL}
2. edit two files

At this point, bzr diff, bzr status, svn diff, svn status, all can see
both changes.

3. bzr commit one of the files (bzr ci path/to/A)

Now, none of the above tools notice the changes in the file, even though

  svn cat {URL to file in repo} | diff - path/to/B

can see a difference.

Workaround:

  pushd path/to
  rm -rf .svn
  svn co --force {URL to this dir in repo} .
  popd

Now all the tools are again happy.

Bug#576219: racoon: Allow specification of local address for ISAKMP

2010-04-01 Thread Paul Evans
Package: racoon
Version: 1:0.7.3-3
Severity: wishlist

Our security gateway has multiple local IP addresses. Since our peers
care about which IP address they see requests from, we have to pick the
right source our end.

Currently racoon appears to lack this ability. Instead, I have to work
around it by a rather fragile:

  ip route add DEST via ROUTER

so the side-effect of that host route means the correct local source is
chosen. This is fragile because it relies on knowing which router to use
just to use the right local IP. Further, it relates to all traffic to
that peer, not just ISAKMP traffic.

It would be useful if we could

  remote 1.2.3.4 {
  local 5.6.7.8;
  exchange_mode main;
  ...
  }

to have racoon bind() the socket its end.

Bug#573588: qemu: Transmit timeouts in guests using virtual e1000 NICs

2010-03-12 Thread Paul Evans
Package: qemu
Version: 0.11.1-2
Severity: normal

I have a collection of about 14 virtual machines running a variety of
Linux 2.4, 2.6 and OpenBSD based guests, all connected using some VDE
virtual ethernet switches. All the machines use e1000 NICs.

A recent upgrade to this version of qemu has had a determental effect on
these NICs; from time to time, perhaps once or twice a day, a machine
will suddenly decide its NIC is broken and stop talking IP over it:

Linux 2.4:

Mar 12 16:16:54 viggen kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: bond0: transmit timed out
Mar 12 16:16:54 viggen kernel: e1000: bond0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex
Mar 12 16:17:04 viggen kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: bond0: transmit timed out
Mar 12 16:17:04 viggen kernel: e1000: bond0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex

(ignore the fact this NIC is called bond0; it really is an e1000 I just
renamed it for compatibility with some virtualised software).

Linux 2.6:

Mar 10 02:28:26 freehand kernel: [ cut here ]
Mar 10 02:28:26 freehand kernel: WARNING: at net/sched/sch_generic.c:219
dev_watchdog+0x1bf/0x1d0()
Mar 10 02:28:26 freehand kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: bond0 (e1000): transmit timed
out

So far I haven't observed the OpenBSD boxes doing this, though that may
be because they transmit and receive far less traffic than my Linux
boxes; it may be traffic related.

I haven't changed the guest OSes at all since a previous version of qemu
where this wasn't happening, so I'm fairly convinced it's an issue with
qemu rather than the guests.

Bug#567173: qemu: Don't treat CapsLock as a CapsLock if X says it isn't

2010-01-27 Thread Paul Evans
Package: qemu
Version: 0.10.6-1
Severity: minor

I use xmodmap to blow away any concept of "caps lock", instead using the
physical piece of plastic as a much more useful extra modifier key for
my window manager.

It would be nice if qemu would realise this and not go randomly altering
the capslock state of the emulated keyboard. I appreciate this will
result in not having an ability to set caps lock on the emulated guest,
but I'm prepared to accept that as My Problem. Getting it stuck in the
wrong state so everything I type has inverted capitals is not useful.

Bug#548919: simple-cdd: Built images fail to have modules, partition, or mount filesystems

2009-09-29 Thread Paul Evans
Package: simple-cdd
Version: 0.3.11
Severity: normal

Given a fresh new directory, I simply

  $ mkdir my-simple-cdd-squeeze
  $ cd my-simple-cdd-squeeze
  $ simple-cdd
  ...

It successfully creates an image:

  $ ls -l images/debian-testing-amd64-CD-1.iso
  -rw-r--r-- 1 paul paul 134M 2009-09-29 17:37
images/debian-testing-amd64-CD-1.iso

I then run it on a new blank image:

  $ dd if=/dev/zero of=qemu-test.hda bs=1M count=2048
  $ kvm -hda qemu-test.hda -cdrom images/debian-testing-amd64-CD-1.iso -boot d

When the image boots I choose the normal "installer".

After choosing language and keyboard layout, it complains that:

  No kernel modules were found. This probably is due to a mismatch
  between the kernel used by this version of the installer and the
  kernel version available in the archive.

So I continue without modules.

It then of course fails to detect network hardware (without the drivers
for it), so I skip that too and move on to disk partitioning.

It complains (with a red background) that "Logical Volume Manager not
available". Hitting continue here moves on to the "Partition disks"
screen.

This screen has pre-selected a guessed arrangement for the disks. If I
hit I just get stuck in a loop, not being able to run the manual
partitioner. Hitting sends it off to create the partition and mkfs
it, but it then fails to mount with a generic "The attempt to mount a
filesystem with type ext3 in IDE1 master, partition #1 (hda1) at /
failed." message. It gives no further information on why.

At this point the installation can go no further.

Bug#546216: libtest-warn-perl: Please upgrade to version 0.11_01 or above

2009-09-11 Thread Paul Evans
Package: libtest-warn-perl
Version: 0.11-1
Severity: normal

Prior to version 0.11_01, Test::Warn used Array::Compare. Array::Compare
is now based on Moose, which pulls in a large amount of CPAN machinery.

This means that Class::MOP, Moose, etc... are required for anything that
uses Test::Warn, possibly even leading to a cyclic dependency as
Test::Warn is used in a lot of places.

Upgrading to 0.11_01 or above would remove this dependency and break a
potential cycle.

Thanks,

Bug#545469: apt: dist-upgrade / autoremove fight over a package

2009-09-07 Thread Paul Evans
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.22.2
Severity: normal

I get a constant loop of:

  $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  ...
  The following NEW packages will be installed
librarian0
  ...

  $ sudo apt-get autoremove
  ...
  The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer
required:
librarian0
  The following packages will be REMOVED
librarian0

The dist-upgrade step didn't want to upgrade any packages, simply
install one new one.

Bug#540785: claws-mail: Cache problems with folders whose names are purely numeric

2009-08-10 Thread Paul Evans
Package: claws-mail
Version: 3.7.2-1
Severity: normal

In my IMAP cache, I have lots of mails, whose filenames are just the
UID of the message on the server. On the server, I have split folders to
archive previous years' messages:

  + Bugzilla
 + 2007
 + 2008
 + 2009

This seems to fail with the on-disk IMAP cache, because it can't allow
both a message and a folder called "2009". This causes cache
inconsistency problems, where I can no longer access any mail in the
2009 folder.

Looking at IMAP logs, the server is happy with the transfer, then it
fails to write the file locally, gives up, and displays its usual "this
message is not available" error:

 This message can't be displayed.
 This is probably due to a network error.

 Use 'View Log' in the Tools menu for more information.

The IMAP log window claims:

 ...
 [11:56:07] IMAP4> 14221 SELECT "Bugzilla.2009.M01"
 [11:56:07] IMAP4< * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Draft \Deleted \Seen)

 [11:56:18] IMAP4< [FETCH data - 2617 bytes]
 ** IMAP error on imap.my.company: FETCH error

If I rename the folder to "Y2009" then it works correctly.

Bug#534332: debhelper: dh_auto_{configure, build, install} - Incorrect handling of Module::Build-based perl modules

2009-06-23 Thread Paul Evans
Package: debhelper
Version: 7.2.16
Severity: normal

The order of tests in dh_auto_configure goes:
  if (-x "configure") ...
  elsif (-e "Makefile.PL") ...
  elsif (-e "Build.PL") ...

This prevents dual ExtUtils::MakeMaker + Module::Build modules (e.g.
anything using Module::Build::Compat ) from working properly; the
Build.PL should be tested first.

Furthermore, some XS-based modules have a configure script; even if this
is present, the Build.PL should still be run in preference.

A similar problem occurs in dh_auto_build and dh_auto_install. In their
current order, the Makefile is preferred over the Build script - this
means if the Makefile is in fact running Build in passthrough mode, it
wno't be passed the MODULEBUILDRC parameter, as required to prevent
Bug 517423 reoccuring.

The order of the tests in the these files should be swapped; so as to
become:

dh_auto_configure:
 if (-e "Build.PL") ...
 elsif (-e "Makefile.PL") ...
 elsif (-x "configure") ...

dh_auto_build and dh_auto_install:
 if (-e "Build.PL" && -e "Build") ...
 elsif (-e "setup.py") ...
 elsif (-e "Makefile" || -e "makefile" || -e "GNUmakefile") ...

Bug#533293: RFP: libnet-packet-perl -- a framework to easily send and receive frames from layer 2 to layer 7

2009-06-16 Thread Paul Evans
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

This perl module provides packet building/parsing. It is useful
alongside libnet-pcap-perl for parsing the captured packets off the
wire.

* Package name: libnet-packet-perl
  Version : 3.26
  Upstream Author : Patrice Auffret (go...@cpan.org)
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/~gomor/Net-Packet-3.26/
* License : Artistic
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : a framework to easily send and receive frames from layer 2
to layer 7

This module is a unified framework to craft, send and receive packets at
layers 2, 3, 4 and 7.

Basically, you forge each layer of a frame (Net::Packet::IPv4 for layer
3, Net::Packet::TCP for layer 4; for example), and pack all of this into
a Net::Packet::Frame object. Then, you can send the frame to the
network, and receive its response easily, because the response is
automatically searched for and matched against the request (not
implemented for all layers).

Bug#515634: python-yaml: YAML loader complains about non-unique anchors

2009-02-16 Thread Paul Evans
Package: python-yaml
Version: 3.08-1
Severity: normal

Given a small input file, such as

  - &anchor 1
  - &anchor 1

yaml.load() dies with an error:

  yaml.composer.ComposerError: found duplicate anchor 'anchor'; first occurence
in "", line 1, column 3:
  - &anchor 1
^
  second occurence
in "", line 2, column 3:
  - &anchor 1
^

This ought to be allowed; the YAML 1.1 spec says in 3.2.2.2:

  When composing a representation graph from serialized events, an alias node
  refers to the most recent node in the serialization having the specified
  anchor. Therefore, anchors need not be unique within a serialization.

Bug#506139: dpkg-dev: Parsing error in Objdump.pm causes erroneous output in dpkg-shlibdeps

2008-11-18 Thread Paul Evans
Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.14.22
Severity: normal

I got lots of lines warning of useless dependencies on libraries because
I didn't use any symbols.

 dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: dependency on libncurses.so.5 could be avoided if
"debian/libtermkey0/usr/lib/libtermkey.so.0.1" were not uselessly linked
against it (they use none of its symbols).

A quick look with 'nm -D' on the library in my package and the library
it claimed to link against showed this was bogus:

 $ nm -D libtermkey.so | grep tiogetstr
  U tigetstr

 $ nm -D /usr/lib/libncurses.so.5 | grep tigetstr
 0002bfd0 T tigetstr

I went hunting in the code and eventually found this to be a bug in a
regexp in Objdump.pm, line 255:

if ($line =~ /^[0-9a-f]+
(.{7})\s+(\S+)\s+[0-9a-f]+\s+(\S+)?(?:(?:\s+$vis_re)?\s+(\S+))/) {

This RE uses a useless noncapturing group at the end (?: ... ) when I
think it ought to be moved. If I inspect runtime using perl -d on this
module against my library, I find:

 $line = "  D  *UND*\cI snprintf"

Using your original regexp:

 eval: [ $line =~ /^[0-9a-f]+
(.{7})\s+(\S+)\s+[0-9a-f]+\s+(\S+)?(?:(?:\s+$vis_re)?\s+(\S+))/ ]
 [  ]

I.e. no match. Instead by fixing it:

 eval: [ $line =~ /^[0-9a-f]+
(.{7})\s+(\S+)\s+[0-9a-f]+(?:\s+(\S+))?(?:\s+$vis_re)?\s+(\S+)/ ]
 [ ' D ', '*UND*', undef, undef, 'snprintf' ]

corresponding to the variables later unpacked:

 my ($flags, $sect, $ver, $vis, $name) = ($1, $2, $3, $4, $5);

Bug#504699: libc6: makecontext() on AMD64 does not handle pointers; docs do not make this clear

2008-11-06 Thread Paul Evans
Package: libc6
Version: 2.7-15
Severity: normal

makecontext() on AMD64 cannot pass pointer arguments to the invoked
function; they get squashed to 32bit values, ignoring the top bits.

I'm aware that the POSIX spec doesn't require the ability to pass
pointers, though it isn't all that clear on the subject.

I've had a variety of C programmers read the makecontext(3) manpage, and
most of them didn't spot the fact it can't do pointers until I
specifically mentioned this fact. The current documentation is
insufficiently clear on the subject.

I'd like to propose either:

 a) Extending makecontext() on AMD64 so it can pass pointers, and add a
section to the manpage to explain that you cannot portably do this,
but GNU libc happens to allow it,

or

 b) Explain in the manpage that GNU libc cannot pass pointers.

Naturally I'd prefer option a because that is more useful; without the
ability to pass a pointer, it becomes much harder to actually use the
function to perform useful work in real programs, aside from the tiny
trivial examples usually given.

Bug#486352: uswsusp: s2ram fails on IBM X31

2008-06-15 Thread Paul Evans
Package: uswsusp
Version: 0.7-1.1
Severity: normal

's2ram' manages to suspend, I think. At least, the machine gives the
appearence of suspending; the backlight turns off, the disks spin down,
the power LED goes off, and the moon-shaped LED turns on. I am however
unable to wake it up again - no amount of pressing keys, power button,
or activating the lid switch seems to help.

What does work just fine though, is

  echo "mem" >/sys/power/state

Perhaps whatever s2ram does, it could be made to do that instead?

May or may not be the cause of your bug, but I found it segfaults

Bug#457900: xfs: upgrade from xterm freezes X server

During a normal 'dist-upgrade' of my system, the xfs package was
upgraded. Early on in 'dist-upgrade', the old XFS was stopped. This
caused the xterm that dist-upgrade was running from to stop responding,
as well as other X programs stopping.

To fix this, I ssh'ed in from another machine and ran:

This woke up the xterm and allowed me to finish the upgrade

Bug#345839: xserver-xorg: I can confirm; working with 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11, broken with 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2

2006-02-01 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11
Followup-For: Bug #345839

I am also having the same problem. I've tried installing various
packages from /var/cache/apt/archive, and confirmed that all 6.8.2
versions work fine. 6.9.0.dsfg.1-2 breaks. I am unable to confirm with
1-1, as I don't have that in my cache.

I don't know if this is relavent, but I'm running on AMD64.

Bug#342113: gdm should Build-Depend on libxinerama-dev

2005-12-05 Thread Paul Evans
Package: gdm
Version: 2.8.0.6-1
Severity: important

Latest gdm (2.8.0.6-1) seems to have been built without Xinerama
support; earlier versions supported it. gdm does not currently
Build-Depend on libxinerama-dev. If I rebuild locally where
libxinerama-dev is installed then it correctly behaves with my
setup. Using the stock debian package, it does not.

Bug#335076: xfce4-session: Shutdown messages invisible

2005-10-21 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xfce4-session
Version: 4.2.2-1
Severity: normal

If I switch to a virtual console and "init 0", or use GDM to shut the
machine down, then all the usual messages from the various /etc/init.d
scripts gets printed to the console as normal.

However, if I use xfce4-session's shutdown option from the xfce4 panel,
these messages go nowhere. They don't appear on any virtual console. The
machine does successfully shut down, just no messages are printed.

Bug#333234: sawfish: Sawfish should build-depend on libxinerama-dev

2005-10-10 Thread Paul Evans
Package: sawfish
Version: 1:1.3+cvs20050709-5
Severity: important

The sawfish package does not currently depend on libxinerama in any way.
This means that the currently-available package from debian.org has
probably been built without xinerama support. By just obtaining the source
locally and rebuilding, where libxinerama-dev is installed, I manage to
fix some xinerama-related bugs, where xinerama was being ignored.

Namely, this was Bug #327878 which, when sawfish is built with xinerma
support, is no longer an issue.

I think that looks like a different bug...

My bug is specific to X.org. I notice different behaviour running XFree
as I do X.org.

Also, this isn't a dead zone problem - I have two monitors the same
size (1280x1024). On XFree, sawfish's internal windows, or popup
windows always go in the centre of one or other monitor. On X.org, they
always appear in the centre of the screen, right at the boundary
between the two monitors.

Bug#327878: sawfish: Does not honour xinerama under xserver-xorg

2005-09-12 Thread Paul Evans
Package: sawfish
Version: 1:1.3+cvs20050709-4
Severity: normal

I run a dual-monitor setup; with two 1280x1024 monitors left-to-right,
with xinerama enabled in the X server.

I recently upgraded to xserver-xorg, from xserver-xfree86. Under the
latter, sawfish correctly honoured the xinerama information, and did not
place any windows (such as new xterms) over the between-screens join.
Currently under xserver-xorg, it occasionally does that; it appears not
to know not to put windows there.

Other information that might be useful:

ii  xserver-xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6   the X.Org X server

$ xdpyinfo | grep XINE
XINERAMA

(I don't currently know a way to query the xinerama information out of
the X server, or I'd paste its output here...)

I've just installed the version from unstable;

$ apt-cache policy sawfish

and restarted sawfish.. No change; bug still occurs (on the AMD64).

I've just tested this now.

It doesn't cause a permanent error, there's no message box in the
screen, and sawfish continues to work as normal.

However, the popup window is still displayed with full window
decorations.

Bug#323857: xfce4-panel: Panel buttons with a menu break sawfish if the menu is popped up

2005-08-18 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xfce4-panel
Version: 4.2.2-1
Severity: normal

To reproduce the bug:

 1. Be running sawfish, rather than the default xfwm4
 2. Click the up-arrow of the "Printers" button in the panel

The popup window now appears, as a full Sawfish window, complete with
window decorations. Futhermore, it causes a Sawfish error message box in
the middle of the screen, saying something like:

Bad argument: #, 7378697629, 1

This error message will now not go away... If it is cleared (by clicking
on it), it will re-appear when almost any other window manager function
happens, such as

 * Switching desktops

 * Mapping or unmapping another window to the screen - newly-mapped
   windows in normal applications don't get borders drawn, and get
   mapped to the fixed +0+0 location at the top-left of the screen.

Simply refocusing from one window to another doesn't cause this message
to appear.

The only way to stop this breakage, is to restart Sawfish by

  pkill sawfish; sawfish &
or
  sawfish-client -f restart

Also relavent, is the version of sawfish:

ii sawfish 1.3+cvs20050222-1 a window manager for X11

Bug#321140: Acknowledgement (xfce4-panel: All windows move about randomly in sawfish if desktop switcher is clicked)

2005-08-18 Thread Paul Evans
After having updated some packages, I note this bug is no longer
reproducible, clicking to change desktop now works reliably.

I have the same version of xfce4-panel installed as when I reported the
bug.

According to dpkg, I have the following now...

Bug#321140: xfce4-panel: All windows move about randomly in sawfish if desktop switcher is clicked

2005-08-03 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xfce4-panel
Version: 4.2.2-1
Severity: important

When switching between desktops by clicking on the desktop switcher, if
sawfish is the window manager, then all the windows move about the
screen massively; they all shift up and left, an amount relating to
exactly where on the switcher was clicked. This affects all windows on
every desktop, not just the one being switched from or to.

This does not happen when using xfwm4. I am unsure quite if it's a
sawfish or an xfce bug; but I note sawfish can successfully switch
desktops by other means (e.g. internal keyboard mappings).

Bug#305849: xterm: Xterm sends broken Ctrl-Left/Right/Up/Down sequences

2005-04-22 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xterm
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12
Severity: normal

Since nearly a year ago now, Ctrl-arrow keys have not sent a control
sequence that vim / bash / etc... can properly recognise as such.

E.g. in bash/vim, Ctrl+Left/Right is supposed to move a whole word in
the indicated direction. Running this from a Linux VC works, as does
gnome-terminal. But running it in a real xterm causes bash(readline) to
print ;5D rather than move the cursor, and causes vim all variety of
bugs, depending on what sort of machine is running that vim. Linux's
vim simply returns to normal mode. Solaris' vim deletes the line above
the current one.

I've observed this bug both on AMD64 and i386-based systems, and it
seems only the xterm to be at fault.. it doesn't matter where the
bash/vim is running; either locally or via ssh to another machine.

Bug#297325: mingetty: Will reset terminal's Unicode mode when started

2005-02-28 Thread Paul Evans
Package: mingetty
Version: 1.06-3
Severity: important

My system runs "unicode_start" in the boot scripts, and has
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 set. All during the boot process, Unicode mode works
fine (extended characters like the GB Pound Sterling symbol can be typed
while the bootup process is running, and they are displayed correctly).
As soon as "mingetty" starts the consoles though, Unicode mode gets
switched off. The GBP symbol key continues to send its UTF-8 code, but
the console does not interpret them correctly. This prints as two
characters, and other UTF-8 output (e.g. from man or text files) is not
displayed correctly either. This is fixed by running "unicode_start"
again on the terminal in question.

Bug#295416: adduser: deluser will silently delete a group of the same name

2005-02-15 Thread Paul Evans
Package: adduser
Version: 3.59
Severity: normal

Example:
  # addgroup monkey
  # adduser --ingroup monkey monkey
  # deluser monkey

This example will silently delete the "monkey" group, providing no
output message that it will be doing so. The manpage also gives no
indication that this will happen.

The "monkey" group is deleted even if other users exist for which
"monkey" is their primary group. This behaviour is exhibited for both
normal and --system accounts.

Suggested fixes:

  * Don't delete similarly named group.

or

  * Provide a warning when running deluser; e.g.:

# deluser monkey
Removing user `monkey'...
Warning: Also removing group `monkey'...
done.

Also document this behaviour in the manpage.
