Seems to be the case, it works if I do it from a "su -". A dupe of bug
349196 and 349729 I guess.

Yes, thank you very much!

Bug#337862: gdm: Keyboard disabled on first startup

2005-11-06 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: gdm
Version: 2.6.0.8-1
Severity: important

At the first startup from power-down, the gdm login window does not accept
keyboard input. The mouse works. Logging in remotely and doing a
"/etc/init.d/gdm restart" makes the keyboard work again, and it does not
fail again until after the next reboot.

Keyboard and mouse are both regular PS/2. I don't think this behaviour came
directly after upgrading to Sarge, I believe it was introduced by a security
upgrade, but since I seldom reboot I can't tell exactly.

Bug#308988: bad usage of anchor tags leads to ugly css hover effects

2005-05-17 Thread Peter Karlsson
Andreas Wuest:
Introduction
Beside that a-tags are closed by in html.
It is closed! It is a so called 'empty element'
Debian's pages are HTML, not XHTML. You can't have empty elements in HTML,
you need to close them properly.

I don't know if this is the prettiest solution though. I would really
prefer the soultion using [href] attribute matching, since this only
matches hypertext links.
:link and :visited also only matches links, and doesn't depend on them being
A elements.

Bug#299646: Queries for .de domains fail

Christian Kurz:
when I'm trying to look up a .de domain, jwhois will give me no results.

That works for me, do you have Lynx installed? To query HTTP servers it

not to, or to use another browser.

Bug#299646: Queries for .de domains fail

2005-03-15 Thread Peter Karlsson
Christian Kurz:
No, I'm not having lynx installed. I've only got w3m installed. But I fail
to see why jwhois needs to query the http server for .de domains, when the
whois server works fine. It has worked for me in the past. Then for some
time I had to add -T dn to the query to get the full information. But now
it's working again fine, as I showed. So why query the HTTP server?
I don't really know why it was changed.

Bug#299734: broken on 64-bit systems

2005-03-15 Thread Peter Karlsson
Max Alekseyev:
There are multiple problems with goldedplus on 64-bit systems such as
segfaults (see bug 251856 as well) and hanling data files.
Yeah, this probably is the same problem as in bug 251856. The program was
simply not designed for 64-bit systems. I should probably just exclude the
64-bit architectures from the supported systems list, until such a time when
64-bit support is added (which is unlikely given that the project is quite
dead, much like Fidonet itself).

Max Alekseyev:
So I believe it will not hard to fix goldedplus for 64-bit system. One
just need to carefully inspect parameters of all
fseek/lseek/fread/fwrite/etc. calls.
If you have any insight into what might cause the problem (especially if you
have fixes for them), I would be very happy to include those.

As of FIDO, it's pretty still alive in xUSSR. ;)
I participate in a Swedish echo that used to receive about 1000 messages a
week back ten years ago. Today it seldom peaks at more than 5 messages a

Unfortunately, GoldEd+ development seems to have more or less stopped as
well.

Bug#307512: nedit: Segfault on startup

2005-05-04 Thread Peter Karlsson
Thorsten Haude:
I agree, it looks like a library error on first sight. I'm not sure how
this linking works in Debian though: Shouldn't it be possible to have both
installed?
The thing is that they seem to install libraries with the same name.
openmotif places them in /usr/X11R6/lib, lesstif in /usr/lib. The problem is
that openmotif's libraries "win", so nedit won't start.

Running nedit as
  LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib nedit
works. I'll add an alias for that as a workaround for the time being.
Are you sure Opera doesn't work with Lesstif? It might demand OM and still
work with Lesstif.
No, I'm not sure. I have to ask my colleagues about that :-)
What is the result of 'nedit -V'?

Bug#308226: Launching gnome-terminal with a profile opens two windows

2005-05-08 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.8.2-2
Severity: normal

When launching a gnome-terminal instance from my window manager menu
(icewm) with the --window-with-profile command, I get two windows. This is
an example of a command line used in my ~/.icewm/menu file (all on one line,
of course):

  gnome-terminal --window-with-profile Debian --title
"people [logging in]" --command "slogin [EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I get two windows: One actually executing the command and using the selected
profile, and one local window with the default profile.

Before updating to Sarge, I was using a similar commanad (but without the
profile part, of course, setting the colours explicitly) from icewm, and it
worked just fine, only opening one copy.

Bug#308635: nedit: Each time I switch tabs, the status field grows in height

2005-05-11 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: nedit

Severity: normal

When I have opened more than one file in nedit in the tabbed interface, the
status field (right below the tabs) will grow ny a few pixels in height each
time I switch tabs. If I do it enough, there is almost no space left in the
window to actually edit the file.

It's not only when logging in to a Woody box that this happens, I see the
same problem logging in to a Solaris box. Running a regular xterm or an rxvt
I don't see this problem.

Bug#308988: bad usage of anchor tags leads to ugly css hover effects

2005-05-16 Thread Peter Karlsson
Jutta Wrage:
I know, that there is some bad usage of a tags on the debian pages.
That's not really bad usage (although using the "id" attribute on the
would have been better). What was bad was the CSS assuming that "a" is a
link. I fixed that the other day.

The CSS now reads:
 :link { color: #FF; }
 :link:visited { color: #800080; }
 :link:active { color: #FF; }
 :link:hover { color: #F000FF; }
which fixes the problem.

Bug#306155: icewm: Does not use my specified titlebar font after upgrade

2005-04-24 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: icewm
Version: 1.2.20+21pre1-3
Severity: normal

After upgrading from Woody to Sarge, I find that icewm no longer use the
font I have specified for window titlebars. After having looked through the
documentation, I copied it to the "prefoverride" file (even though the theme
I use, metal2, does not specify any fonts).

AFAICT from the documentation, this setting (which worked with the icewm
from Woody), should still work from ~/.icewm/preferences:

  TitleFontName="-microsoft-verdana-bold-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"

The font displays properly with xfd, so it is known to X.

Bug#306181: autoconf: Generated configure script exits with syntax error

2005-04-24 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: autoconf
Version: 2.59a-3
Severity: normal

After upgrading from Woody to Sarge, the configure script as generated by
autoconf from the attached configure.in exits with a syntax error. The same
source generated a working configure script with the version of autoconf in
Woody.

This is the last I see in the output from configure:

  checking for memcmp... yes
checking for getopt in unistd.h... yes
  checking for snprintf... yes
./configure: line 8587: syntax error: unexpected end of file

The last info in config.log is only information about the last successful
test, nothing that seems to indicate what is wrong.

autoconf gives no error or warning messages when generating the configure
script.

the version in Woody) scrolls the window back all the way to the left when
it moves a word down to the next line.

Ben Pfaff:
The configure.in you attached has insufficient quoting. Please
read the section titled "M4 Quotation" in the Autoconf manual,
fix the quoting problems in the script, and then reopen the bug
if that is insufficient.
Well, I just assumed that autoconf would give me warnings or errors if I
make mistakes, but it didn't...

There is no clear upgrade path from Woody if you use Gnome. After having
upgraded and trying to log in the first time, I am greeted with a message
that basically says "Screw you, your old settings suck, I'm not even going
to try to help you keep any of them", and then I have to reconfigure
absolutely everything from scratch.

That is not good.

Bug#317654: gnupg: Fails with assert verifying signatures, leaving lockfile

2005-07-10 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: gnupg
Version: 1.4.1-1
Severity: important

Trying to verify a signature (any signature), I get this:

gpg: Signature made Sun Jul 10 13:23:24 2005 CET using DSA key ID 6394265E
  gpg: checking the trustdb
  gpg: ../../g10/keyring.c:1388: keyring_rebuild_cache: Assertion
`keyblock->pkt->pkttype == PKT_PUBLIC_KEY' failed.

I have wiped and restored a copy of ~/.gnupg from a machine where I do not
have this problem (it is still running Woody, so has an old version, but
copying the directory over to another machine running Sarge does not show
this problem), but the problem persists.

When it crashes, it leaves a lock file in the ~/.gnupg directory, which
means that the next invokation will stall forever waiting for the lock to be
released.

2005-10-18 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the jwhois package, both as Debian maintainer, Debian
volatile maintainer and upstream maintainer.

The package description is:
GNU jwhois is an Internet Whois client that queries hosts for
information according to RFC 954 - NICNAME/WHOIS. JWHOIS is configured
via a configuration file that contains information about all known Whois
servers. Upon execution, the host to query is selected based on the
 information in the configuration file.

Bug#324975: www.debian.org: Debian security advisories in RDF format is a broken link

Guido Trotter:

> Hi, the link on http://www.debian.org/security/ for the RDF formatted

Looks like the server configuration changed and dropped "rdf" from the
list of known documents, and thus not allowing content negotiation on
them. Going to the expanded URL (with language) gives me the feed as
text/plain.

So, the server configuration needs to be changed. Or perhaps we should
rename the generated files from .rdf to .xml so that we can use the default
configuration?

Bug#325177: jwhois: -f option causes segfault

2005-09-05 Thread Peter Karlsson

Jonathan McDowell:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ jwhois -f earth.li
[Querying whois.nic.li]
Segmentation fault

Interesting, I can reproduce this, but only when the program is installed as
/usr/bin/jwhois, is not run through the debugger, and is set setgid jwhois.
If I remove any of those three criterions, it doesn't crash.

I'm a bit stumped, it doesn't seem that it wants to dump core when setgid,
and doesn't crash when it isn't, making it difficult to figure out just what
goes wrong.

A workaround is to remove the setgid bit (chmod 755 /usr/bin/jwhois), but
that will break the caching functionality.

I used to have that in the build scripts, but that suddenly prevented them
from being build altogether for me, so I removed it. I haven't quite figure
out why it didn't build them, so I just let it install the files that were

Bug#291555: omitting slash causes strange mish-mash

2005-01-21 Thread Peter Karlsson
Jason Spiro:
http://packages.debian.org/stable/ (note: there's a slash at the end of that
URL) takes me to the list of packages in stable.

http://packages.debian.org/stable (without a slash) takes me to a Can't find
package "stable" page.
Well, they are two very different URLs, so one would assume that they would
point to different places. The problem is that most people seem to assume
that you can omit the final slash just because most servers usually allow
for it.

I have, however, just printed out 20 pages of installfest handouts with
the slash missing. If I do not correct them, 20 newbies will get
unexpected results and perhaps give up on apt-get.
I would say that since you spotted your mistake before handing them out, you
have time to fix them (either add a slash by hand, or edit and re-print).
Shouldn't be a problem.

Bug#389109: Launching gnome-terminal with a profile opens two windows

2006-09-23 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.14.2-1
Severity: normal

Since bug 308226 was archived, I'll file a new report. I have now upgraded
the machine where the problem occurred to Etch, and the problem still
happens here.

My setup:
* Gnome desktop
* IceWM window manager
* One Gnome panel on the left-hand side of the screen, no main menu on top
* Gnome-Terminal set up with several profiles, one of them "Pine"
* One application launcher, with this command line:

gnome-terminal --title Pine --window-with-profile Pine --command
  "/usr/local/bin/pine -d9" --geometry 90x57

Steps to reproduce:

1. Have no terminal windows open
2. Press the application launcher

Expected results:
One Gnome Terminal window displaying Pine in a 90x57 window should display,
using the "Pine" profile.

Actual results:
Two Gnome Termianl windows open, one with the properly configured Pine
profile, running Pine, and one in a standard 80x25, using the standard
profile.

Bug#376577: realloc(): invalid pointer when reading mail spool

2006-07-15 Thread Peter Karlsson

Andre Grueneberg:

By replacing fgets() in this location, I could make uqwk work, but as
there are plenty of other Fgets()s in the code, this seems to require
further analysis.

Yes, there seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding between these files. Do
you have an example of a message that causes the crash? My guess would be a
message with a very long line, longer than BUFLEN (16K) characters.

Bug#376577: realloc(): invalid pointer when reading mail spool

2006-07-16 Thread Peter Karlsson

Andre Grueneberg:

Another measure I could think of, would be to make buf a dynamically
allocated array and malloc() BUFLEN bytes on program startup. I have not
checked the code whether this might be feasible.

Yes, that is the solution I am looking into. It would be easier to check if
it actually fixes it properly if I had a copy of a message that caused the
crash, though.

Bug#418529: jed: evalfile() no longer supporting ~ in path name

2007-04-10 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: jed
Version: 0.99.18-8.etch.4
Severity: normal

Since I have the same configuration files on several different systems, with
different $HOME, I have set up my .jedrc to use ~ to refer to a file under
my home directory:

  evalfile("~/skel/jed/joe"); pop();

This used to work with the version of Jed in Sarge, but after an upgrade to
Etch, it fails with

  Unable to load /usr/share/jed/lib/~/skel/jed/joe.slc

Changing the evalfile to take the full path works:

  evalfile("/home/peter/skel/jed/joe"); pop();

But that means having to refer to the actual home directory path on all my
installations.

Bug#396832: O: cbmlink

2006-11-03 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I am orphaning cbmlink (Transfer data to/from Commodore 8-bit computers) due
to lack of time.

The package needs to be updated to the latest version, which also splits the
native sources from the target machine sources into different source code
archives, these are already split in the Debian archive, but the build
procedure needs to change to accomodate two upstream source archives.

You are right, I must have missed that paragraph on my first reading.
This must have changed since I created the package, I cannot remember
seeing that requirement before. Sorry.

Bug#417734: FTBFS with GCC 4.3: missing #includes

2007-08-23 Thread Peter Karlsson

Martin Michlmayr:

Your package fails to build with GCC 4.3. Version 4.3 has not been
released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors and
give people an advance warning.

Thanks.

Patch applied to upstream repository, with style replaced with
to retain compatibility with the old GCC for OS/2 (which I'm not
sure I still have elsewhere, though, since I do not have any OS/2 build
environment any longer).

With the version in Sarge, yes. I do not currently have an unstable or
testing install to test in. I'm running an ISO 8859-1 locale, not a
UTF-8 locale.

Bug#366880: kernel-image-2.6-k7: Crash in pageattr.c loading ATI proprietary driver

2006-05-11 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: kernel-image-2.6-k7
Version: 101sarge1
Severity: normal

This is for the package version from backports.org, so it might be a problem
with the backport.

I get a kernel crash reported in pageattr.c when I load ATI's proprietary
display driver (fglrx). It seems to come in two variations. I'm not sure if
it is an ATI problem or a Linux problem. I have also filed a support request
with ATI (ticket #737-1031255).

Bug#357252: /usr/bin/ooffice: Hangs on startup

2006-03-16 Thread Peter Karlsson
Package: openoffice.org-common
Version: 2.0.1-4bpo1
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/ooffice

Trying to start ooffice doesn't work, it just hangs after a while. An strace
stops here:

  [...]
  _llseek(255, -77, [6707], SEEK_CUR) = 0
  fork()  = 8609
  rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [RTMIN], NULL, 8) = 0
  rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD], [RTMIN], 8) = 0
  rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [RTMIN], NULL, 8) = 0
  rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD], [RTMIN], 8) = 0
  rt_sigaction(SIGINT, {0x8075fa0, [], 0}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
  waitpid(-1,

I had the same behaviour before upgrading to 2.0.1-4bpo1. Wiping
~/.openoffice does not help, neither does wiping ~/.openoffice.org2

It doesn't matter if I just start "ooffice" or "ooffice -calc" or similar, I
get the same behaviour.
