Bug#1067699: libllvm18:i386 contains files, also in libllvm18:amd64

2024-06-27 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: libllvm18
Version: 1:18.1.8-1
Followup-For: Bug #1067699
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

Still happening

amd64

Preparing to unpack .../libllvm18_1%3a18.1.8-1_i386.deb ...
Unpacking libllvm18:i386 (1:18.1.8-1) ...
dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/libllvm18_1%3a18.1.8-1_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite shared '/usr/lib/llvm-18/lib/libLLVM.so.1', which is
different from other instances of package libllvm18:i386

This makes it very tricky to cross-compile Mesa to i386 on amd64.

This a regression, as it was working fine on llvm 16 and 17 (and probably
earlier as far I remember for few years).

Regards,
Witold

Bug#1070877: debian-installer: xfsprogs not available in the installer, but xfs fs type available, mkfs fails

2024-05-10 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

This is against di in testing, for trixie. netinst iso
from 2024-05-10.

xfs-modules 6.7.12-1
libparted2-udev 3.6-4
partman-auto 164
partman-auto-raid 52
partman-base 227
partman-utils 227
partman-basicfilesystems 165
partman-basicmethods 75
partman-btrfs 60
partman-cros 6
partman-efi 103
partman-ext3 113
partman-iscsi 77
partman-jfs 63
partman-md 107
partman-partitioning 151
partman-target 128
partman-xfs 69
partman-xfsprogs-udev 6.7.0-2

There are some other bugs, related to xfs, but not quite like this.

For example there is a separate bug that causes xfsprogs to not be
installed in target (which is fine to do by default, but not when one
has at least 1 xfs file system configured in target tree).

My problem is that one cannot even create xfs in partman.

If one selects Use as: XFS file system, and then continue
it will fail with fatal error, and no help either in partman,
installer or in logs.

I figured out that this is because mkfs.xfs is not available
in the installer environment.

Which is weird, because xfsprogs-udev is there.

No issues with btrfs, ext2-4, fat, jfs. They are available by default.

Witold

Bug#998197: kdeconnectd: should not listen on all interfaces by default

2024-05-06 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: kdeconnect

Elevating severity, because it looks like I didn't even installed this
package (I did inspect all apt-get install invokations since system
creation), and it kdeconnect could only be installed due to some
suggests / recommends, not due to any dependency or direct request.

And as mentioned already before. It autostarts on desktop login, even if
one does not use KDE (it autostarts in normal gnome-shell session for
example).

So this is even more dangerous.

Bug#1060161: apt install -V sometimes does not show a version while it knows the version

2024-01-06 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: apt
Version: 2.7.7
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Trying to install wine from winehq, on debian testing. No issue with
that, but got an interesting result with -V:

...
...
Suggested packages:
   libcurl4-doc (8.5.0-2)
   libgnutls28-dev (3.8.2-1)
   libidn-dev (1.41-1)

   libldap2-dev (2.5.13+dfsg-5)

   libssh2-1-dev (1.11.0-4)
   gdbm-l10n:i386
   hplip (3.22.10+dfsg0-4)
   hplip:i386 (3.22.10+dfsg0-4)
   libtap-harness-archive-perl (0.18-4)
Recommended packages:
   sane-airscan (0.99.27-1+b1)
   libodbc1
   libtiff5
   libodbc1:i386
   libtiff5:i386
The following packages will be REMOVED:
   sane-airscan (0.99.27-1+b1)
   wine

I can understand that apt does not always show exact version in
Suggested and Recommended, because these packages might not even exist,
and version might complexly depend whetever it is going to be installed
or not, some of them might conflict with each other, and in general
could be costly to compute.

But, REMOVED section should clear, because it should show the currently
installed version:

user@debian:~$ dpkg -l wine
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend

||/ Name   VersionArchitecture Description
+++-==-==--===
ii wine 8.0.1~repack-3 all Windows API implementation -
standard suite

So, no idea why it is not showing version in the case of wine.

Bug#1053731: atop crashes with a floating point exception when atopaccdt service fails

2023-12-23 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: atop
Version: 2.9.0-2
Followup-For: Bug #1053731
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Version 2.9.0-2

This is still broken in current version:

Program received signal SIGFPE, Arithmetic exception.
0x555685d0 in acctprocnt () at ./acctproc.c:673
673 ./acctproc.c: No such file or directory.

#2 main (argc=, argv=) at ./atop.c:563
(gdb)

This is a default configuration (zero modifications, just install
packages). First time startup. Subsequent startups also fail the same
way. This causes systemd unit atop.service to be always in failed state,
and restarting it does not help.

atopacct.service also fails to start. But I am not sure if this is
because atop fails, or reverse.

Bug#1057487: lprint: Please do not listen on 0.0.0.0:8000 by default

2023-12-05 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: lprint
Version: 1.1.0-3

X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

lprint often is used on a local computer only with USB printers.

It would be better if lprint only listened on ::1, 127.0.0.1, not 0.0.0.0

Or maybe even not listened on TCP at all by default, unless enabled in
the config somewhere.

Otherwise there is a risk of security exposure.

Bug#1057486: xl2tpd: Please do not start deamon by default

2023-12-05 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: xl2tpd
Version: 1.3.18-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Installing xl2tpd might be required for example when using
network-manager plugin for xl2tpd when configuring client.

But installing xl2tpd will also install a deamon and make it start by
default on a port, even if xl2tpd is not installed, or only installed by
network-manager.

Having it run and have open port, even when using as a client, is in my
opinion not secure.

Making it not start and listen by default (and thus require
configuration, like possibly just uncommenting some line in a config
file), or shipping systemd units in a separate package would be better.

Regards,
Witold

Bug#1053457: live-build: Building live image fails when unmounting /sys: 'target is busy'

2023-12-05 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: live-build
Version: 1:20230502
Followup-For: Bug #1053457
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Also had this issue for some time (maybe 2-3 months) on my amd64
machine.

But I am not so sure it is due to efivars, at least not only.

Instrumented chroot_sysfs with mount | grep chroot, and got this

devpts-live on /home/user/tmp-live-build/20231205T051432Z/chroot/dev/pts type
devpts (rw,relatime,gid=5,mode=620,ptmxmode=000,x-gvfs-hide)
proc-live on /home/user/tmp-live-build/20231205T051432Z/chroot/proc type proc
(rw,relatime,x-gvfs-hide)
sysfs-live on /home/user/tmp-live-build/20231205T051432Z/chroot/sys type sysfs
(rw,relatime,x-gvfs-hide)

Outside of chroot efivars is indeed mounted tho:

efivarfs on /sys/firmware/efi/efivars type efivarfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime)

I think it is a bit racy, because sometimes I do see efivars being mounted
under chroot.

2-3 months ago my workaround was to just add a bit of extra sleep (just
few seconds were enough) before attempting to unmount chroot/sys.

Now, this workaround does not look to be really working, so I made
another workaround - try to unmount efivars, then try to unmount sys in
a loop with a bit of sleep, until it finally succeds.

Cheers

Bug#1055492: appstream-generator: FTBFS with ldc 1.35

2023-11-17 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: appstream-generator
Followup-For: Bug #1055492
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

FYI.

The underlying issue was "fixed" in appstream-generator upstream and is
part of 0.9.1 release from the last week.

This was done by making rpmmd backend optional (one requiring std.xml
which was removed from Phobos).

Note however, that for 0.9.1 to compile, one might need to update some
build depdencies. And make libappstream-dev/libappstream-compose-dev to
be >= 1.0

After updating libappstream-dev and libappstream-compose-dev to 1.0 (in
experimental), I was able to build appstream-generator 0.9.1+ without
issues.

Bug#1055527: castxml: Please update llvm/clang to llvm-17 in unstable

2023-11-07 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: castxml
Version: 0.6.2-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

castxml is using llvm-14

would be nice to bump this to 17 in unstable / testing. Unless there is
some autoupgrade comming in few next weeks.

On my system there are still few programs still depending directly on
llvm-14 (afl++, castxml, bpftrace, doxygen and python3-numba via
python3-llvmlite), (ldc and doxygen in unstable already migrated to
llvm-16)

There is ongoing llvm-14-rm transition going

https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/llvm-14-rm.html

We do have llvm-15 in stable, llvm-16 in testing and unstable, and
llvm-17 in unstable (since 2023-10-30, so few days ago).

llvm-17 will likely migrate to testing in few days. Would be nice to
update castxml to use it. Upstream for version 0.6.2 says llvm 17 is
supported.

If llvm-17 does not migrate, updating to llvm-16 is another option.

(alpha port can be ignored, as it is on ancient version of castxml
anyway, and llvm cannot be bootstreapped on it for a long time anyway).

Witold

Bug#1053583: network-manager-l2tp-gnome: Cannot connect to IPv6 gateway

I think this is same as Bug #619557

xl2tpd that is in Debian (from offical upstream) still does not
understand IPv6 as a connection protocol.

There are some forks and patches, which are rather simple, but for some
reason it is still not usptreamed.

Package: xl2tpd

Tunnel itself is over IPv4.

But I have configured for the addresses to be only link-local IPv6.

Other side is another Debian with manually configured xl2tpd lns.

Client is using network manager with gnome plugin for configuring. IPv4
is disabled. IPv6 is link local. DNS and route propagation are all
disabled.

Server is 185.x.x.x
Client is NATed to 85.y.y.y

Connection is established, and works, but after 60 seconds it is
disconnected, with error claiming that connect did not succeed.

Bug#1053543: libdw-dev: Poor package description

2023-10-05 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: libdw-dev
Version: 0.189-4
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

libdw-dev:

Description: libdw1 development libraries and header files

This is really poor choice of a description. It does not provide any
actual information. Like what libdw1 is?

Usually Description will be more informative, similar to how non-dev
packages are described.

Maybe:

library that provides access to the DWARF debug information (development files)

which would align with libdw1 package description.

However, ultimately this would be better (and shorter):

Library to access DWARF debugging information (development files)

and for libdw1:

Library to access DWARF debugging information

(with possible (shared libraries) suffix, but preferably without)

Similarliy for libelf-dev:

Description: libelf1 development libraries and header files

=>

Description: Library to read and write ELF files (developement files)

Cheers,
Witold

Bug#1053330: xournal: Should not depend on transitional package ghostscript-x

2023-10-01 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: xournal
Version: 1:0.4.8.2016-7+b1

Dependency on ghostscript-x should be switched to ghostscript package
instead.

ghostscript-x is transitional package that just installs ghostscript.

There are only few remaining package that still depend on it (xournal,
latex2html, gv being last few ones).

Bug#1036873: Don't Depend on transitional package ghostscript-x

Package: gv
Version: 1:3.7.4-2+b1
Followup-For: Bug #1036873

Dear Maintainer,

any updates on this? I do not see gv sources on salsa, so I am not sure
how to update the pacakge otherwise (I am not DD).

Should be one line change to switch from ghostscript-x to ghostscript.

I know there were no releases of gv in many many years, but the program
just works and is quite useful (It is one of the fastests postscript
viewers).

Bug#1051584: /usr/lib/llvm-15/bin/llvm-config: multiarch issues, with llvm-config-15

2023-09-09 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: llvm-15
Version: 1:15.0.7-8
Severity: normal
File: /usr/lib/llvm-15/bin/llvm-config
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

I am trying to cross compile Mesa for armhf, on arm64 box.

I installed llvm-15, libllvm15:arm64 and libllvm15:armhf

So I do have libLLVM.so now for armhf, but I am unable to convince the
llvm-config-15 to output proper paths with --ldflags.

[7/1106] Linking target src/amd/vulkan/libvulkan_radeon.so
FAILED: src/amd/vulkan/libvulkan_radeon.so
/usr/bin/arm-linux-gnueabihf-g++-12  -o src/amd/vulkan/libvulkan_radeon.so
-Wl,--build-id=sha1 -Wl,-Bsymbolic -Wl,--gc-sections -Wl,--version-script
/home/witold_baryluk/mesa-git/src/vulkan/vulkan.sym -L/usr/lib/llvm-15/lib
-lLLVM-15 -pthread ... -Wl,--end-group
/usr/lib/llvm-15/lib/libLLVM-15.so: file not recognized: file format not
recognized
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

So, that is not using correct -L here.

Canonical way would be to use llvm-config-15 (Which Meson used by Mesa is
using to find all the flags), but it does not understand multiarch.

$ CC=arm-linux-gnueabihf-gcc-12 CXX=arm-linux-gnueabihf-g++-12
PKG_CONFIG=arm-linux-gnueabihf-pkg-config llvm-config-15 --ldflags
-L/usr/lib/llvm-15/lib
$

(libLLVM15.so there is a symlink which eventually leads to
/usr/lib/arm64-linux-gnu/libLLVM15.so.1)

I checked source code of llvm-config and there is nothing in it to make
it smart, one just needs to compile two versions of LLVM and llvm-config,
but installing arm64 and armhf versions of llvm-config is not possible.

I am not able install llvm15:armhf and llvm15:arm64 simulataniously
either, as they conflict and provide same binaries.

This is not great, as the pkg-config provided by Debian is multi-arch
aware, and can provide correct paths.

The same issue happens on amd64, when cross-compiling mesa to i386. It
happens to work there, due to some other flags passed do the compiler,
and compiler sees both versions of libLLVM.so (amd64 and i386), and picks
i386 one, becase the other cannot be used. But that is more of an accident,
than working properly.

Bug#1039450: ndctl: Split ndctl-monitor (and cxl-monitor?) into own package

2023-06-28 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: ndctl
Version: 76.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #1039450
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Cześć Adamie.

I often use a custom livecd verision of Debian with various utilities
pre-installed, so they can be easily used offline, or without needing to
reinstall them after each reboot.

Among many other utilities I do have cxl and nvm dimm tools.

But often, if I boot this same livecd on a machine that does not have cxl
or nvm dimm devices, deamon will complain, and fail at boot (with big red
warning), and sytemd will continue restarting it afaik (or maybe not, it
looks like it tries to run it only once on my system, then gives up).

root@debian:~# systemctl status ndctl-monitor.service
× ndctl-monitor.service - Ndctl Monitor Daemon
 Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/ndctl-monitor.service; enabled;
preset: enabled)
 Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed 2023-06-28 22:11:35 UTC;
25min ago
   Duration: 89ms
Process: 2412 ExecStart=/usr/bin/ndctl monitor (code=exited, status=250)
   Main PID: 2412 (code=exited, status=250)
CPU: 9ms

Jun 28 22:11:35 debian systemd[1]: Started ndctl-monitor.service - Ndctl
Monitor Daemon.
Jun 28 22:11:35 debian ndctl[2412]: no dimms to monitor, exiting
Jun 28 22:11:35 debian systemd[1]: ndctl-monitor.service: Main process exited,
code=exited, status=250/n/a
Jun 28 22:11:35 debian systemd[1]: ndctl-monitor.service: Failed with result
'exit-code'.

It is not a big deal, but something that is not perfect in my opinion.

For my livecd, I can clearly modify some systemd unit files manually
(using build scripts for live-build), but I wonder if defaulting to
running a daemon by default is a good idea in general. Most of the time
probably yes, but sometimes not.

As of smartmontools you mentioned. I have exactly same issue. I need
smartctl tools for troubleshooting various computers on my livecd, but I
DO NOT WANT smartd to start. For very similar reason I opened a bug
against smartmontools few days ago: https://bugs.debian.org/1039454

Feel free to downgrade to wishlist and think if this makes sense at all.

Cheers,
Witold

Dear Maintainer,

Lets say I want to have smartctl tool available, to inspect some faulty
or close to faulty drive.

But there is no way to do just that, as installing smartmontool will
automatically start doing automatic things on this disk!

I think it is not desirable to ship systemd service files and init
scripts for smartmontools deamon, in the same package as smartctl itself.

I would suggest moving smartd and its related files to separate package.

ndctl and cxl can be used on its own, installation of them should not

cxl-monitor).

Move systemd service units and init scripts to own packages,
ndctl-monitor and cxl-monitor?

Bug#1039449: fluidsynth: High memory usage even if not used

2023-06-25 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: fluidsynth
Version: 2.3.1-2
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

fluidsynth auto-starts on my system when I log in, and that causes it to
read into memory /usr/share/sounds/sf3/default-GM.sf3 (this is a symlink
to /etc/alternatives/default-GM.sf3 which is a symlink to
/usr/share/sounds/sf2/FluidR3_GM.sf2).

About 142 megabytes of it.

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 142M Feb 24 2008 /usr/share/sounds/sf2/FluidR3_GM.sf2

This causes fluidsynth RSS to use about 165MB of residewnt memory, even
if it is not used for anything.

I do not know why it autostarts, my guess is that pipewire or something
else starts it, even if it is not needed. (it runs as a normal user, not
some system user, and there are no init.d script or systemd units for it
that I can find)

Memory usage, looks to correspond to this memory mapping.

Output of pmap -p $(pidof fluidsynth)

7fdea2389000 144724K rw--- [ anon ]

But there is also many 8M mappings, but they do not contribute to RSS (mapped,
but not touched).

If I show more info with pmap, I got:

3848: /usr/bin/fluidsynth -is /usr/share/sounds/sf3/default-GM.sf3
Address Perm Offset Device InodeSizeRssPss Pss_Dirty
Referenced Anonymous LazyFree ShmemPmdMapped FilePmdMapped Shared_Hugetlb

1447241447240 0 0 0
00 0 144724 1
...

Not only it is fully read, it is mlock-ed (probably to ensure it is not
swapped out, which is important for audio application like this).

It would be desirable in situation like this, to not load whole sf file
by default (just read basic metadata of it), and delay loading, until
there is actually a need for it. Alternatively have them in a format on
disk, that can be mmaped directly. Proper behaviour could be controlled
by some command line flags.

Witold

This is probably, becuase postinst script probably (silently) failed, and
something was not initialized properly during install.

Adding runtime check in that script to detect overlay fs will not be
enough, because it is possible to install mariadb-server in chroot for
live image, which could be on non-overlay fs, but when actually started
it might be on overlay fs.

It would be preferable to do this in startup script instead, but then a
lot of logic would probably need to move from postinst, to startup script.

This can be triggered if very first startup is when using magnet link on
command line.

Any subsequent launches will show this issue.

strace shows (after initialization) a lot of calls to brk, to allocate
memory for something.

Looks like it might be running out of stack due to crazy recursion as
shown below.

It eventually crashes.

Bug#1034694: gnome-core: Cannot install due to pipewire-audio dependency

2023-05-10 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: gnome-core
Followup-For: Bug #1034694
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Hi Jochen.

I am so sorry for wasting your time.

I must have set it very long time ago, probably about a year ago, where I
had some issues with pipewire, and completly forgot this.

Indeed the iso build script has this:

```
# Put some packages on hold, so they are not installed via suggests or
recommends.
save "${BUILDDIR}/config/hooks/live/0025_hold_bad_packages.hook.chroot" << "EOF"
#!/bin/bash
set -e
apt-mark hold xtrx-dkms
apt-mark hold langford-dkms
# apt-mark hold raspi-firmware  # Do not hold raspi-firmware, as we later want
to remove it, and this would interfere.
if dpkg -l raspi-firmware; then
  apt-mark purge raspi-firmware || true # Schedule for removal.
fi
# apt-mark hold nvidia-tesla-kernel-support  # Do not install. Something pulls
this somehow.
apt-mark hold pipewire-alsa
apt-mark hold pipewire-audio
EOF
```

I will fix this on my side.

Thanks a lot for guidance and help!

Please close this issue.

Regards,
Witold

Bug#1032490: python3-pip: Add config option to use --break-system-packages system-wide

2023-03-07 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: python3-pip
Version: 23.0.1+dfsg-1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

I do understand PEP-668, and majority of reasons behind it.

But please let me allow to disable this per-user (config and/or env variable)
and/or system-wide (via config), without passing --break-system-packages on
every
invocation of pip3. (shell alias is not good either).

Using virtualenv, venv, pyenv, pipx, is not an option or preference for me.

I believe one of the options is to remove /usr/lib/python3.11/EXTERNALLY-MANAGED
(via diversion?). If this is so, please document this in Chapter 5, section
5.2.2
of the bookworm release notes. And possibly in
/usr/share/doc/python3.11/README.venv or somewhere there.

Regards,
Witold

Bug#1032356: look: can't open /usr/lib/plan9/lib/words

2023-03-04 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: 9base
Version: 1:6-13
Followup-For: Bug #1032356
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Just a small observation about non-english dictionaries:

Using option -f, makes look ignore lower and upper case latters, and for
example mostly work with Polish dictionary:

$ /usr/lib/plan9/bin/look -f czy /usr/share/dict/polish
czy
czyby
czybym
czybyś
czybyście
czybyśmy
Czycie
czyha
czyhacie
...

Using polish diactricts hower does not work in pattern:

$ /usr/lib/plan9/bin/look -f czł /usr/share/dict/polish
$

$ grep ^czł /usr/share/dict/polish | wc -l
574
$

Bug#1032356: look: can't open /usr/lib/plan9/lib/words

2023-03-04 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: 9base
Version: 1:6-13
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

As installed, look is not very usable:

$ /usr/lib/plan9/bin/look
look: can't open /usr/lib/plan9/lib/words
$

This is most likely a porting bug, as man page, says by default it uses

/usr/share/dict/words

Using explicitly this file, makes it work:

$ /usr/lib/plan9/bin/look foo /usr/share/dict/words
foo
foobar
food
...

Note: /usr/share/dict/words is usually provided by wamerican. Users are
free to divert the symlink to other word lists.

Additionally:

I am pretty sure look uses UTF-8 (obviously), and in Debian now, all word
dictionaries are now using UTF-8 too. However, not all dictionaries use
Unicode or UTF-8 sorting.

I tested it with Polish word list, and look does not work on it. Even
without using polish dictrics in a pattern or a word. I am guessing this
is because from quick tests, it looks like plan9 look looks to be doing a
binary search in file, but many locale specific dictionaries are sorted
using locale specific collation rules, not Unicode rules. For example,
for Polish wordlist:

...
Aaseny
ab
Ab
aba
ABA
abace
...

because this is what official Polish language rules say to do (as used
for centuries in encyclopedias and paper dictionaries). In dictionaries,
usually character-after-character rules are used. In encylopedias
word-after-word (so for example Jan Sobieski, is before Janina). (Polish
dictionary does not have any multi-word words, so that is moot anyway).

Whetever it is useful for spell checking purposes, is another matter.

(not util-linux's look also does not work)

Bug#1031911: man-db: MAN_KEEP_FORMATTING does not work

2023-02-24 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: man-db
Version: 2.11.2-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

I am tring to dump some formatted man pages (some standard ones, and some
generated from Markdown using pandoc), to a file and other program.

After setting MANWIDTH=80, and MANPAGER=cat, or PAGER=cat, or -P cat, or
pipeing to cat, I lose formatting, like colors, bold, underlines, etc.

MAN_KEEP_FORMATTING=1 makes no difference.

It appears one needs to also use GROFF_SGR=1 to make it work, but it is
poorly documented in man manpage.

Witold

Bug#1031564: linux-image-cloud-amd64: Please include e1000 and e1000e modules in cloud kernel.

2023-02-18 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: linux-image-cloud-amd64
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

e1000 emulation is a default in qemu. It would be nice to have available
in a cloud kernel. While most of the time one will use virtio, or some
other cloud specific driver, for troubleshooting images, booting system
images in recovery mode, manually, etc, it is good to have e1000 as it is
easy to run in qemu.

For completeness this is how it presents in lspci:

00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (rev 03)

This is with default qemu settings. (i440fx chipset).

With -M q35 (which is also very commonly used), qemu defaults to using:

00:02.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection

This is handled by e1000e module.

As far as I know neither of these modules require any firmware files. And
qemu emulated device would not use it anyway.

So please include e1000 and e1000e in default cloud kernel image buld.

While at it, it would be nice to have ptp module probably. And ptp_kvm (I
actually use that on real cloud instances, not just in qemu).

As of the file size, for rather unknown reasons the e1000.ko and
e1000e.ko files are rather large, 300KB and 616KB on my system. Plus
another 49K for ptp. It is a little more than expected. My guess this is
due to inclusion of debug symbols. One way or another, it should be
included in the cloud image.

While using v4l2loopback on a cloud kernel is not be a likely scenario,
and cloud kernel image has multiple subsystems of kernel disabled /
removed, including sound and v4l to save a bit on image size, it would
probably nice if v4l2loopback do not just stright fail to build. One can
for example have both cloud kernel and other kernels installed, and it is
perfectly ok to build then dkms only for a subset of kernels.

Bug#1030538: pulseaudio-module-gsettings and zeroconf unmet dependencies

Package: pulseaudio
Version: 16.1+dfsg1-2+b1

I have no idea how is this possible, but during build of live Debian iso
of testing/bookworm, using live-build, I got this:

Tried with 3 different mirrors.

The list provided to the apt-get does not contain pulseaudio or any
pulseaudio modules. It does contain libpulse-dev specified manually. And
some other packages. So the pulseaudio itself is installed via transitive
dependency (i.e. something like gnome or mate). (the actuall command line
to apt is too long too list here, it has over 8000 packages specified).

I had no issues few weeks ago, and I changed nothing. So something must
have changed in packaging, apt or archive.

Bug#1030526: live-build: Fails to build bookworm, due to firmware-linux

Oo. A new archive area / suite. That must be new indeed, and explains why
it broke.

Using non-free-firmware archive area did help! (my build fails at the
moment, due to some pulseaudio-module-zeroconf dependency issue, but that
is probably just transient issue in the archive, not live-build issue).

I also modified some live-build files to install also firmware-misc-non
free from that area.

Thank you Roland.

PS. I will try 'lb config' without root next time. (looks to be working)

In my package list I do not have any firmware packages. It is live-build
that decides to install it. Which is good.

But it fails now:

I think the reason is that previously firmware-linux was in non-free,
but now it is split into firmware-linux-free and firmware-linux-nonfree?

I tried modifing /usr/lib/live/build/chroot_firmware and
/usr/lib/live/build/installer_debian-installer to use that packages
instead, but build still fails with siomilar message.

Looking at archive, it looks firmware-linux-nonfree and
firmware-misc-nonfree is not present in bookworm/non-free. But looking at
official cd-unofficial-with-firmware, (build using lwr, not live-build),
I do see these packages used during the build and fetch. But last upload
there was about month ago, so maybe it is also failing now.

I looked a bit at changelogs in PTS, and wiki about firmware, but could
not find any solution.

Bug#1029473: gnome-settings-daemon: automatic suspend after 20 minutes is undesired by some users

2023-01-23 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 43.0-3
Followup-For: Bug #1029473
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Hi.

Thank you Simon for in depth explanation.

I fully agree a presold desktop and laptops should have this enabled by
default. I was not aware it is a legal requirement in EU and USA, but
that makes sense.

Considering it is rather hard to make any automatic distinctions of
system type, I guess indeed there is no way to change a default to work
for everybody.

I will consider some workaround on my side, or adjusting default in my
live-build build itself (as long as it is used only by me).

Regards,
Witold

Bug#1029473: gnome-session: Automatic Suspend should not be enabled by default

2023-01-22 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: gnome-session
Version: 43.0-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Rather annoying issue. In my opinion it might even deserve "grave" severity.

It appears in Power settings, Automatic Suspend is On by default (with 20
minutes delay).

Here is the problem.

I am on a desktop PC, always on, and have programs in a background that
must run non stop or for many hours (i.e. data acquisition / monitoring,
long running scripts, simulations, etc). I often use Live-CD (custom
built Debian iso using live-build), so I relay on defaults a lot. But
suspend to RAM is often broken on computers I use, and it often never
recovers, needing me to power cycle the computer, or even disconnect
power, waiting and connect power again. (long pressing power button does
not help). And even if it works, often a state of USB devices is lost,
which I have few (including the root file system).

So last time I used my system, after almost 10 hours of work, I went for
a break and some food, while some processes were running in a background.
Then came back about 30 minutes later, system was not responding
(monitors off, USB devices off, keyboard not doing anything), and power
button was blinking. Pressing it did not help, and needed to remove power
(at power supply), and connect back. Many hours of work lost.

I do not normally use Gnome Shell (I normally use MATE), but I accidently
logged into Gnome Shell, and wanted to give it a try. First time this
occured, I was really surprised, and I was thinking maybe it was a kernel
bug (I often use rc kernels). But it happened again on another kernel
version.

As I use Live-CD quite often, just changing a value is not an option
manually, as these settings will be lost after reboot. Not to mention
they are not intuitive for a novice user of Gnome Shell.

I do not understand why Automatic Suspend would be On by default.
Especially if the default power mode profile is Balanced (not Power
Saver).

A way better idea would be to detect a computer form factor, and power
source. If it is battery (i.e. not AC and not charging), then maybe do
enable a suspend. Otherwise no.

I also do not understand why Screen Blank in Power Saving Options is
"Never". A default should be few minutes.

Regards,
Witold

Additionally wrong HTTP status code is retured (should be 404), and wrong
Content-Type (missing, which makes it look like binary, but should be
text/html).

If I strace the ozwcp and do a HTTP request I got this:

[pid 3353605] pselect6(7, [6], [], [], NULL, NULL) = 1 (in [6])
[pid 3353605] recvfrom(6, "GET / HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: localhost:"..., 16384, 0,

msg_controllen=0, msg_flags=0}, MSG_NOSIGNAL) = 168

Indicating to me it is looking at cp.html in the current working directory,
which is wrong.

If I cd into /usr/share/openzwave-controlpanel, and then start ozwcp, it
does load the main page, but Firefox console shows that there is number
of missing components (404 errors):

Bug#1028206: ukui-media: ukui-volume-control-applet crash when click on icon

2023-01-08 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: ukui-media
Version: 3.0.4-1+b1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Note: I am running MATE, but ukui volume control applet starts without
any warning or issue, but clicking leads to a crash.

If this is not supported, a proper warning on startup should be displayed
instead, or it should not start at all, or start required dependencies
automatically.

It looks like ukui-media implicitly depends on some stuff from
ukui-panel?

It should either be codified in package dependencies, or this dependency
in code removed. (Not sure why it need to do anything with settings or
panel, when doing a click on a apple icon, but maybe there is - i.e. to
show so kind of slider).

Bug#1023780: spirv-tools: not multi-arch compatible

2022-11-09 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: spirv-tools
Version: 2022.4-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

spirv-tools package provide in one package, binaries, libraries, headers,
cmake files and pkg-config files.

For cross compiling rusticl in Mesa for example one needs spirv-tools.

But it is not possible to have both i386 and amd64 of
lib/header/pkg-config files for spirv-tools installed.

Consider splitting package into spirv-tools, libspirv-tools,
libspirv-tools-dev, and make lib* ones coninstallable (or for header
files same).

Regards,
Witold

Bug#989844: Cross-compilation support (please package more libstd-rust-dev-*)

2022-11-09 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: rustc
Version: 1.62.1+dfsg1-1
Followup-For: Bug #989844
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

Some embeded targets would be nice to have

For example

xtensa-esp32-none-elf
xtensa-esp8266-none-elf

and some bare arm mcu targets.

Having parity with gcc would be nice. For example I have these:

gcc-xtensa-lx106
gcc-arm-none-eabi
gcc-arm-linux-gnueabihf
gcc-12-arm-linux-gnueabihf
gcc-mingw-w64-x86-64
gcc-mingw-w64-i686
gcc-mingw-w64-x86-64-posix
gcc-mingw-w64-x86-64-win32
gcc-mingw-w64-i686-win32
gcc-mingw-w64-i686-posix
gcc-avr (this one is probably not supported by rust, as this is 8 bit platform)

I am not planning to be using rust for them, so not a big prio for me. (I
use C and D on some of the above with gcc/gdc).

Bug#1008735: base-files: /etc/os-release should contain VERSION variables for testing and unstable

2022-11-05 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: base-files
Version: 12.3
Followup-For: Bug #1008735
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

I am somehow confused by the current solution in base-files 12.3.

bookworm:

$ lsb_release -s -i -d -r -c
No LSB modules are available.
Debian
Debian GNU/Linux bookworm/sid
n/a
bookworm
$

sid:

$ lsb_release -s -i -d -r -c
No LSB modules are available.
Debian
Debian GNU/Linux bookworm/sid
n/a
bookworm
$

How one can distinguish between testing / bookworm and sid now? Do I need
to parse files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ now, maybe using `apt-cache
policy base-files` ?

There are practical situations where bookworm and sid are out of sync for
months, and this is important to distinguish in many places.

Witold

Any updates? There is a patch.

https://debian-knoppix.alioth.debian.org/packages/cloop/ doesn't work,
but you can find it in /usr/src on CD images:
http://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V9.1CD-2021-01-25-EN.iso

DEV=$(sudo losetup -P -f --show KNOPPIX_V9.1CD-2021-01-25-DE.iso)
sudo mkdir /mnt/knoppix
sudo mount "${DEV}p2" /mnt/knoppix

(requires reiserfs available in the kernel to mount it).

Maybe migrating from m-i to dkms is also something to think about.

Bug#1008735: base-files: /etc/os-release should contain VERSION variables for testing and unstable

Package: base-files
Version: 12.2
Followup-For: Bug #1008735

I also noticed the issue today.

For the context I use it for compiling mesa by outside script:

https://gist.github.com/baryluk/1041204eff4cc4fad6f1508afe67b562/5771c245a55760b7f25b05dc0b397789b27ac0b7#file-mesa-build-sh-L421-L454

as depending on a version of Debian / Ubuntu, I must manually specify
some LLVM related packages with specific version explicitly, and which
compilers to invoke exactly.

And while for testing and unstable, it requires sporadic update to the
script, it is still only relable and easy way to do this using
lsb_release info.

Followup-For: Bug #1012616
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

I suggest escalating this to serious issue. As is causing live-build
build failures, and kernel upgrade issues interfering with the rest of
the system.

Due to chain of Depends and Recommends, xtrx-dkms is installed, even if
not requested or needed directly by user.

For example installing gnss-sdr, gqrx-sdr, gr-osmosdr would cause
xtrx-dkms to be attempted to be installed in many cases.

I think one of the things (beyond fixing the bug in the xtrx-dkms itself),
is changing Recommends to Suggests in libxtrxll0.
I would even say that using Recommends does not follow the Debian policy.

Other option is to remove xtrx related packages from Debian. Devices are
no longer available for purchase. Website has no updates since 2017,
crowsupply had last update in 2019, and github had last update 3-4 years
ago with various Issues and PR opened but not touched for over a year. So
it looks unmaintained. The developer and company now moved to other
projects (similar to xtrx). The driver is small, and has GPL, but there
was never any attempt to upstream it into mainline Linux, so it was
doomed to be abandoned and rot. popcon shows 142 "votes". But this might
be misleading, as there is no direct way to measure how many people
actually use it. If it is installed, it will be built on kernel upgrade,
so "accessed", doesn't mean it will be loaded and used. popcon graphs
also show sharp drop in last month, where people probably started
realising it breaks the kernel upgrade while doing standard apt upgrade.

Witold

Bug#597084: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub: Re: grub-pc: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub fails inside openvz chroot

2022-06-04 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: grub2-common
Version: 2.06-2
Followup-For: Bug #597084
X-Debbugs-Cc: witold.bary...@gmail.com

This problem shows also in very similar form in live-boot environment:

Setting up linux-image-5.17.0-3-amd64 (5.17.11-1) ...
/etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms:
dkms: running auto installation service for kernel 5.17.0-3-amd64:Deprecated

/etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub:

dpkg: error processing package linux-image-5.17.0-3-amd64 (--configure):

subprocess returned error exit status 1

While the grub obviously is not used in the live-boot environment itself,
due to construction of live-boot, it must be installed there. Then if the
users tries to perform an upgrade of packages inside the live
environment, it might trigger update of the kernel packages too, which
will fail at update-grub as presented above.

Would be nice to detect this chroot and live-boot enviornments, and skip
update-grub.

Even on live-boot environment, /boot/grub/grub.cfg does exist, and while
modifying it (as it is on overlay fs), will not accomplish much (changes
are not persisted to the underlying medium), upgrade should not fail.

Importing OpenVPN config, with no default route, make it be imported with
default route installed anyway.

Disabling manually this in "IPv4 Settings -> Routes... -> Use this
connection only for resources on its network", stops it intsalling a
default route, but exporting the config, and then importing it back, it
does not preserve that setting.
