Bug#517458: courier-imap-ssl: upgrade to lenny broke sasl authentification

2009-02-27 Thread bernd
Package: courier-imap-ssl
Version: 4.4.0-2
Severity: important

We are using courier imap, allowing tls but not requiring it. The relevant
excerpts from
/etc/courier/imaps-ssl:

IMAPDSSLSTART=NO
IMAPDSTARTTLS=YES
IMAP_TLS_REQUIRED=NO

Accessing imap without tls is not a problem. Accessing imap with forced tls
throws the following
errorreport in /var/log/mail.log:

Feb 27 22:26:09  imapd-ssl: /usr/lib/courier/courier/imaplogin:
symbol lookup
error: /usr/lib/courier/courier/imaplogin: undefined symbol: auth_sasl_ex

The same applies with IMAPDSSLSTART=YES and forced ssl connection on port 993

Since /usr/lib/courier/courier/imaplogin is provided by courier-imap and there
might be a
connection with the saslauth, here some additional version numbers:

courier-imap: 4.4.0-2
sasl2-bin: 2.1.22.dfsg1-23

Bug#987475: buildd.debian.org: fails to poweroff

2021-04-24 Thread Bernd
Package: buildd.debian.org
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I upgraded my ThinkPad T560 from Debian KDE Buster to Bullseye.
Most of it works very well.

Except, after a shutdown, the device does not turn off.
The last messages stop on the screen and nothing happens anymore ( <= 8h).

The error occurs with kernel 5.10.0-5-amd64 + 5.10.0-6-amd64.
When testing with a kernel 4.19.0-14-amd64 (was still installed on the machine)
everything is okay.
A fresh installation with Bullseye (on another hard drive) is again flawed.
The error occurs regardless of the way I shut down the machine (KDE Starter
Menu or Terminal shutdown -h, systemctl poweroff, systemctl syspend).

A restart works, but it takes about 2-3 minutes after the last message.

I could switch back to Debian Buster if necessary, but I fear that the bug will
also be included in the Bullseye stable.

The following message is displayed at the end (Only the last lines):

Bug#912577: ITP: shellia -- library for interactive shell scripts

Severity: whishlist
X-Debbugs-CC: debian-de...@lists.debian.org

I intend to packate shellia for debian.
current URL: https://salsa.debian.org/bs/shellia

Shellia is a library that allows to run shell scripts interactive and helps to
familiarize oneself with large shell scripts, find the cause of unexpected
behaviour in shell scripts, and run shell scripts silently, while checking
them step by step.

I found out, this is no bug.

Bug#966010: ca-certificates: missing Deutsche_Telekom_Root_CA_2.crt Package: ca-certificates Version: 20200601~deb9u1

2020-07-22 Thread bernd

Package: ca-certificates
Version: 20200601~deb9u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

after the last security update of stretch the CA
/usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla/Deutsche_Telekom_Root_CA_2.crt
is missing.

I have seen it is included in the actual buster version, but not in
the actual bullseye version.

So I am not sure if this CA is removed intentionally, or if it is a mistake.
If it was intentionally please explain why.

Regards
Bernd

Bug#910276: mksh does never execute an "EXIT trap", if it is created with the "trap" command in a sub shell

2018-10-06 Thread bernd

Thank You Thorsten,

I hoped, it would be obvious that this is a bug and mksh could be fixed.
It is strange, that mksh lets me define an exit trap without error,
but then ignores the trap.

But things seem not to be so easy.

I think the use case of the "subshell_exit" is obvious.
But I will describe it in one sentence, to explain, why I think this
bug matters.

The use case: If a subshell does something, that requires a temporary file,
it should also define an EXIT trap, to make sure the temporary file is
deleted,

if the script ends unexpected.

The problem is, I see no easy workaround.
So this means for me, I will not support mksh in my library.

If you think this bug does not help to improve mksh, it's probably the
best if you close the bug.

Thank you for your help. You have also added some other shells to your
tests, that I did not try before.

And I will try to support some of those shells instead of mksh.

Regards
Bernd

Zitat von Thorsten Glaser :

Bernd Schumacher dixit:

Please confirm, that this is a bug and not the expected behaviour of mksh.

I still cannot confirm either way, but some preliminary research
with an extended test script:

$ cat script
fkt()
{
  trap -- "echo $1 >&2" EXIT
}
fkt shell_exit
$(fkt fn_exit)
$(trap -- "echo comsub_exit >&2" EXIT)
(trap -- "echo subshell_exit >&2" EXIT)

$ mksh script
shell_exit

$ bash2.05b script
subshell_exit
shell_exit

$ ksh93 script
fn_exit
comsub_exit
subshell_exit
shell_exit

$ bash4 script
fn_exit
comsub_exit
subshell_exit
shell_exit

$ nbsh script
fn_exit
comsub_exit
subshell_exit
shell_exit

$ dash script
fn_exit
comsub_exit
subshell_exit
shell_exit

$ yash script
fn_exit
comsub_exit
subshell_exit
shell_exit

$ zsh script
shell_exit
fn_exit
comsub_exit
subshell_exit

$ zsh --emulate sh script
fn_exit
comsub_exit
subshell_exit
shell_exit

With the addition of subshell_exit (I renamed yours in fn_exit),
it’s consistent with no other shell I have, not even GNU bash 2.05b
(Heirloom Shell doesn’t know of the EXIT trap, and I’m ignoring
the C shell). zsh is a notable outlyer but easily fixed.

The manual page has something to say about EXIT traps defined in
functions declared using “function foo { … }” (Korn Shell syntax),
but that’s not used here.

I think that I’ll adapt it to the other shells independent of
whether it’s really a bug or not, for the sake of consistency.
If you’re still interested in semantics, I can continue the
research, though.

bye,
//mirabilos

Bug#860297: Patch

2017-05-26 Thread bernd
Please understand, the problem is not, to run multiple Tor Browsers as
the same user.
The problem is to run multiple Tor Browsers, each from a different
user at the same time on the same machine.

After investigation I found, that this is because of a fixed SOCKSPORT
and and fixed CONTROLPORT.

But each user needs his own SOCKSPORT and CONTROLPORT.

To fix this, the upstream script which is installed at
~/.local/share/torbrowser/tbb/x86_64/tor-browser_de/Browser/start-tor-browser
has to be changed for each user. The patch is attached.

The patch first searches for free ports and then modifies the config
files to use the free ports.

I have build a wrapper script for torbrowser-launcher to apply the
patch, if it isn't already applied.

But I hope it will be fixed by upstream.

Bug#860300: lircmd does not work

2017-06-03 Thread bernd

It seems the message "lircmd.cpp":394: Bad file descriptor" was misleading.

You are right the commandline option --uinput is not needed. The
--uinput option is also read from config file.

But when this opition is used, no lircm filedescriptor is correctly
initialized in daemons/lircmd.cpp main function, but the uinputfd
filedescriptor is initialized instead.

The problem is that in daemons/lircmd.cpp in function msend, data is
written to the filedescripter lircm, even if it is not initialized.
This leads to the Error message. This could be fixed by checking with
if (lircm != -1) as it is already done in the next step which starts
with (if uinputfd != -1).

This next step seems to work correct. I can check this with cat
/dev/input/mice. If lircmd is running I get output when pressing the
remote if not I get no output.

This means lircmd is running correct, but it will write error messages
to syslog for each key press.

This could be fixed.
So please close the bug. Maybe you could ask the author to add this
"if (lirmc != -1)"

Bernd

Bug#1069879: ITP:cashbox -- memorise cost and calculate price of articles

2024-04-26 Thread bernd
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2024-04-26
Severity: wishlist

For my librem5 smartphone, but also for any debian based system,
I have written cashbox with python3 and gtk4.

I intent to package cashbox, because I think it would be good for
debian to have more apps for debian/mobian based smartphones.

Description: cashbox - memorise cost and calculate price of articles
 cashbox memorises the cost of articles and calculates the total price and
 change. It is intended for small clubs on a celebration, where members are
 not experienced in memorizing prices and doing mental arithmetic.

License: GPL-3.0+

It is easy to use use on small smartphone displays or on touchscreens.

See: https://salsa.debian.org/debian/cashbox

I have already communicated this project to the puri.sm forum:
https://forums.puri.sm/t/new-app-cashbox/23349/1
and to the matrix gnome python forum:

Bug#597567: mumudvb: using a questionable username

2010-09-20 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: mumudvb
Version: 1.6-1
Severity: important

Hi,

is there a good reason why this package creates a username which starts
with an underline?

Allowing use of questionable username.
Adding system user `_mumudvb' (UID 110) ...

If there is not a good reason to have the _ there, I'd suggest to rename
to user to mumudvb.

Cheers,

Bernd

Bug#597648: cryptsetup: initramfs-tools script using lvm instead of /sbin/lvm

2010-09-21 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: cryptsetup
Version: 2:1.1.3-3
Severity: normal

The initramfs-tools cryptroot script assumes that /sbin is in $PATH for
calling lvm - everywhere else it specifies the full path to tools in
/sbin. Not a problem normally, but if you call the script manually it
will fail. Attached patch fixes this.

Cheers,

Bernd

Although it might make sense to check *why* the variable was empty, you need to
make sure never to call something like rm $foo/* when you're not sure that $foo
is not empty. You should add an extra check here to ensure this. Also you should
check if the slapd user actually owns the files (or at least the directory)
before deleting them.

That doesn't make a difference. Such things can always happen, so you need to
check for them, even if you fix the real reason.

Then use debian/pyversions or similar ways to limit the package to build with
supported Python versions. Just using the default Python version is not the
proper way for packaging Python modules and programs. Python 2.5 is not gone, so
just fix your packaging please.

Build-Depend on python2.5 or python-all and write 2.5 into debian/pyversions and
use `pyversions -r` as Python versions to build with?

The only kernel which works fine - as far as I know - is the RHEL Kernel
as they ship a patch which disables msi-x [1].
The issue is also known on several other bugtrackers, including
bugzilla.kernel.org ([2], [3]). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a
proper fix from upstream, so it would be nice to have the RHEL
workaround in Debian, too, as using Lenny is a PITA thanks to this bug -
currently we're using the Etch Kernel as this is the last one which
works well. According to the bugzilla.kernel.org bug the issue was
introduced with 2.6.20. Machine and the Qlogic cards are both running
the latest BIOS and Firmware versions, so there is nothing to upgrade
there unfortunately.

If I remember right that license information is based on some post of one of the
authors on some mailinglist, or something similar. If necessary I can dig for
it. Also I think the code is not really maintained.
The other thing you should do is to provide a hbaapi-source package, as hbaapi
is necessary for thinkgs like hbaping, which needs proprietary binary libraries
to be useful with some FC cards. Having a -source image would make it more easy
to build appropriate packages, may be for non-free.

Probably just take the Fedora package as uptsream, that should also fix
licensing questions. The real upstream is dead, so it would even make sense to
contact the fedora people to talk about maintaining/developing it together.

Bug#572705: FTBFS: dh_makeshlibs: dpkg-gensymbols -plibgps19 -Idebian/libgps19.symbols.amd64 -Pdebian/libgps19 -c4 returned exit code 2

2010-03-07 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Hi,

do you have any idea where the extra symbolcomes from? Guess its stripped away
normally... So I think the best way to fix that is not to be paranoid on debug
builds regarding the symbols, dropping the -c4 from dh_makeshlibs should be the
right thing to do. I'll change that for the next upload.

Cheers,

Bernd

I guess all that could be done here is to Recommend postgres-8.4 | mysql-server
- or is there some way to disable dbconfig if the package is being installed in
some automatic way?

Bug#604053: nsca: starts as daemon although disabled in debconf

2010-11-19 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: nsca
Version: 2.7.2
Severity: serious

Installing nsca and answering 'no' to the debcanf question which asks if
you want to run the nsca daemon still results in a running daemon with a
pretty unusual PID:

4294967295 12373   1  0 21:08 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/nsca --daemon -c
/etc/nsca.cfg

I'm filing this as serious as I consider daemons which run and listen on
tcp ports without being configured to do so as a security issue.
Especially when they run with a UID which might b in use otherwise.
I'd guess it tries to use -1 as UID as that was the UID of nobody some
ancient times ago.

Bug#594172: python-werkzeug: double quoting of the location header during redirects

2010-08-24 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: python-werkzeug
Version: 0.6.2-1
Severity: important

Using werkzeug.utils.redirect does not work in case the url needs to be
quoted as the resulting location header will be quoted twice:

First in werkzeug.utils.redirect:
if isinstance(location, unicode):
from werkzeug.urls import iri_to_uri
location = iri_to_uri(location)

and later in get_wsgi_headers of the BaseResponse class:
location = headers.get('location')
if location is not None:
if isinstance(location, unicode):
location = iri_to_uri(location)

So at the end the URL of the redirect is not usable anymore as the result
of the first quoting is being quoted again.

Bug#594332: RFP: kiwi -- platform for building semantic social software applications

2010-08-25 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: kiwi
* URL : http://kiwi-project.eu/
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: Java
  Description : platform for building semantic social software applications

[ below is just the usual "advertisment" from the website,
  if you package KiWi, please convert it intpo a proper description ]

The KiWi core system is a flexible platform for building different kinds
of semantic social software applications on top (currently the Semantic
Wiki and the TagIT application). It provides all the core services
required in such applications, like editing and tagging, the storage of
content and associated meta-data, its own triple store, transactions and
versioning over content and meta-data, linked open data server, and many
small features semantic social software developers will like (like
convenience services for working with ontologies or SKOS thesauruses,
etc.). And finally: the KiWi system also has a quite neat user interface
by now, rarely found in Semantic Web applications.

Technology-wise, the KiWi system is a component based architecture
building on JBoss Seam and Java EE. The main principle is that
everything is a content item, and that a content item always consists of
human-readable content that is connected with RDF relations and may be
annotated by users with semantic tags. This mixture allows content to be
shared between applications: a content item that is created in the Wiki
application can at the same time be displayed in TagIT as a location on
the map or (later) as a blog post in the Blog application. This is made
possible by the flexible structures offered by RDF. A particularly
salient aspect of the KiWi core system is that it makes using RDF much
more convenient for Java developers (no more manual triple store
queries) by offering a flexible facading through interfaces annotated
with special Java annotations that map Java methods to RDF properties.

Please note that KiWi needs JBoss, which is not yet in a shape to be
uploaded to Debian (but there are working packages). Also there might be
various other libraries missing. If you have any questions, don't
hesitate to contact upstream (which is very responsive) or me.

Cheers,

Bernd

Please unblock package zbar. Main reason for the upload was to remove
two conflicts which were introduced by the former maintainer and not
reviewed before - they are completely unnecessary now. Full diff is
attached.

Cheers and thanks,

So you're offering yourself to help checking? Good! Just let me know when which
skript updates and I'll update the package.

Please note that Squeeze is frozen - and unless there are bugs in skripts, I'm
not going to update the package before Squeeze is release.

Bug#612400: coreutils: timeout command does not work with read command anymore

2011-02-08 Thread Bernd Schumacher
Package: coreutils
Version: 8.5-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

The following shell line does not work anymore:
a=$(timeout 10 bash -c "read a; echo \$a")

I expect, that when I type something within 10 secs, the
command returns immediatelly and I can see what i typed
with echo $a.

It workes with the timeout version 1.11-6.5 from lenny.
Also when I compile 1.11-6.5 in squeeze it works again.

sorry, can't follow you:

root@fslab3 ~>unionfs-fuse -ocow,nonempty repdir=RW:/var/log=RO testdir
root@fslab3 ~>echo foo >> testdir/cups/access_log

If you are working as another user and the copy-from-directory/file/path
is owned by root or
another user, then you will need to wait for 0.25, which has a new flag
"-o relaxed_permissions" for
non UID=0 or GID=0 users. And it is a wish-list bug then.

well, you write to a file owned by another user and to a file you do not
have permissions to write to...
Really, we have ripped out all permission code in unionfs-fuse and let
fuse do the job to check permissions.

In 0.25 added code to allow the user to disable fuse-default-permission
handling if not running with super-user rights. However, I am simply not
*absolutely* sure (yet) that will not cause a security issue and
therefore it has to be specified manually.
Also please compare it with in-kernel-filesystems - you cannot start
those without super-user rights. If you start unionfs-fuse as root, you
will not have that problem

Then, one way or another it is too late for Squueze. Unionfs-fuse did
not go into Squeeze, as kfreebsd is missing fuse-utils and as I simply
did not have the time to try to upload a new package that removes that
dependency on fuse-utils and sets it to recommended only.
If there is a chance to get it into 6.01, it will be the current version
with that minor change.
If not and anyway, 0.25, for which I will just still need a few hours to
add a simple IOCTL interface, will be released during the next weeks. So
I simply will not make myself extra work for another package upload
(already working again far too long this day and all the other days
during the week). Besides that I'm a package maintainer only and so
it always takes ages (about 6 months last year) to get someone to upload
a new version for me.

Cheers,
Bernd

Bug#606870: python-openturns: creates a mess in sys.path by adding its own namespace

2010-12-12 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: python-openturns
Version: 0.13.2-6
Severity: serious

Severity: serious as this breaks random other packages (like
castle-combat).

Packages shipping their public modules in the dist-packages directory
should never need to add their own namespace to sys.path. Unfortunately
openturns does so:

% cat /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/openturns.pth
openturns

This breaks various random packages as openturns comes with common
module names like 'common' and 'test'.
Please note that there is never a need for packages which ship their
modules in dist-packages to modify sys.path - you can always import them
by using modulename.module.

I'm not sure what the reason in http://trac.openturns.org/ticket/67 was
to add the .pth file, but doing so was just wrong.

Why do you want to replace a recent version of open-vm-tools (which usually
comes with a LOT of bugfixes by a pretty old version just to introduce the
removed module again? It seems you're not willing to maintain this package
properly, otherwise you'd look at your git repository (I'm sure it contains
upstream's git, too) and revert the commit(s) which removed the vmmemctl module.
Then - if you would care - would update the module to the latest version on
kernel.org. And then you would test your changes properly on a VMware
installation. Yes, I'm talking about proper testing, for example in some VMs on
a ESX machine. Oh, you don't have ESX? I heard you can download it for free, at
least for testing purposes. No hard tasks, so I fail to understand why we always
run into RC bugs whenever we look at a new version of this package. I'd suggest
you give the maintenance of open-vm-tools to somebody who actually cares about
it. Or has the proper time to do so.

Bug#696198: ferm: weird parsing failure when using domain (ip ip6) in functions

2012-12-17 Thread Bernd Zeimetz

Version: 2.1.1-2
Severity: normal

Hi there!

Ferm fails to parse

@def &foo() = {

}
&foo();

with the following error message:

Error in foo.ferm line 2:

Missing "}" at end of file

Which is kinda confusing and not pointing to the real problem (even
worse, if you call &foo much later, it points to a completely wrong
line...).

I'd expect it to work as
@def &foo() = {
domain ip6 table filter chain FOO ACCEPT;
domain ip table filter chain FOO ACCEPT;
}
&foo();

just works well:

Hi,

unfortunately I missed yet another dependency, which was not available on
!linux. Apart from a new changelog entry, the diff is tiny:

- python-dmidecode, lsb-release, gnupg, python-gudev, debconf, python-openssl
+ python-dmidecode, lsb-release, gnupg, python-gudev [linux-any], hal
[!linux-any], debconf, python-openssl

Support for hal is already in the rhn-client-tools, just the dependency was
missing. So please

unblock: rhn-client-tools/1.8.9-3

thanks,

Also please try to get a core file, see which process segfaulted and provide a
backtrace.

Bug#686582: open-vm-dkms: wrong version number for binNMUs/security fixes/...

2012-09-03 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: open-vm-dkms
Severity: serious

Filing with severity serious as it will fail otherwise unnoticed with
the next binNMU.

The Version parsing snippet in debian/rules does not handle versions
with a + properly. This will make the dkms build fail after the next
binNMU or similar rebuild.

A Fix would be:

VERSION = $(shell dpkg-parsechangelog |\
awk '/^Version: / { print $$2 }' |\
sed -e 's|^[^+]*:[^+]*+||' -e 's|-.*$$||')

I was just waiting for an okay form Julien to upload, with no much luck
so far unfortunately. I can upload it to t-p-u whenever you like.

thanks for the explanation - indeed I missed that piece while looking for
reasons why the migration did not happen and there was no bug, so nobody noticed
it. As python-ethtool will never work on !linux architectures, we've removed the
strict dependency on it in rhn-client-tools. The diff is rather simple, so I
would appreciate if you could unblock rhn-client-tools/1.8.9-2 instead. The diff
between -1 and -2 is attached.

Thanks,

Bug#635378: libflickurl-dev: .la files lists dependencies which do not have a .la file anymore

2011-07-25 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: libflickcurl-dev
Version: 1.21-1
Severity: serious

[ serious severity as this bug breaks building packages which link
  libflickurl ]

As removing .la files is one of the release goals [1] the .la file was
removed from libcurl*-dev, but it is still listed as dependency in the
.la file shipped with libflickcurl-dev. So builds using libtool will
fail as they are looking for libcurl's .la file.

So please either remove the .la file if possible, or drop the dependency
line at least.

Thanks,

Bernd

Bug#559483: fso-gpsd: Provides: gpsd is just *wrong*

2009-12-04 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: fso-gpsd
Severity: serious

fso-gpsd should never provide gpsd, as it supports only a very tiny
bit of the functions gpsd provides. I'm filing this bug
as release critical, as the broken provides will break at least
all applications which use libgps to talk to gpsd. While it
might be that this works at the moment because you're lucky,
it will definitely break with the next upload of gpsd as the
protocol changed.
Also all programs which rely on the dbus announcements of gpsd
will break (yes, fso-gpsd is not compatible with that). Not to
forget that fso-gpsd does only supports a few of the amount of
chipsets supported properly by gpsd.

Bug#570257: movabletype-opensource: Fails badly while inserting comments if IPv6 is used

2010-02-17 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: movabletype-opensource
Version: 4.2.3-1+lenny1
Severity: important
Tags: ipv6

Hi!

I'm using MT with an ipv6-aware lighttpd here, which results in ipv4
addresses from people posting comments are shown as
':::172.26.14.40'. MT passes the IP address to the database in this
form and tries to insert it into a character varying(16) field, which
will obviously fail:

Even worse, MT does not show that an error has happened while posting
the comment, instead the 'Thank you for commenting.' template is being
shown. That's also the reason why I file this bug as important - it was
not possible to see this error in the debug log of MT, I had to enable
statement logging in postgres to see the error and the reason for it.

Best regards,

Bernd

We'll give it a try as soon as time permits, the machine is turned off right now

could you let me know what the current status here is?
Is somebody working on the openraster stuff?

Me too. I would just ignore that and put everything in a git repository :) If
the pkg-phototools team complaints, there is still collab-maint.
Did you work on darktable? 0.5 seems to be out, might make sense to get it
finished.

Try to disable viewing relations - then the cpu should be fine again. Viewing
large relations eats a lot of cpu time unfortunately, but thats a known bug.

I've build geoclue 0.12.0 with binutils-gold and can't see any warnings from
dpkg-shlibdeps. Could you please verify that (0.12.0 will hit unstable in a few
minutes).

Hi Sascha,

thanks for the bugreport!

> assumptions about socket internals:
> []

If I remember right that problem did not happen when using Python 2.4, but it
happened with Python 2.5. As I spent a lot of time with upstream on debugging
the issue (unfortunately removing/changing the first test only made a lot of
regression tests fail) and at the end a lot of code was rewritten in between
the version in Lenny and 2.92, I can't fix this easily unfortunately. If you can
come up with a patch which applies to the version in Lenny and all the
regression tests still work (you'd have to get them from the git tag of that
upstream version), I would consider to ask for a stable update, although I doubt
that the release team would accept it.

Cheers,

Bernd

Bug#577095: grep: bracket expressions fails depending on the locale

2010-04-09 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: grep
Version: 2.6.3-1
Severity: grave

As this issue might affact a lot of cases where grep is used, I've
decided to file it with the severity grave.

Since version 2.6.3 (and it seems also 2.5.2 was affected), the
behaviour of grep regarding capital letters in bracket expressions
changed when using UTF8:

With grep 2.6.3:
b...@think ~% LANG=en_US.UTF-8 grep -E '^[A-Z]' /etc/passwd | wc -l
51
b...@think ~% LANG=C grep -E '^[A-Z]' /etc/passwd

Debian-exim:x:100:103::/var/spool/exim4:/bin/false

With grep 2.5.4-4:
b...@think ~% LANG=en_US.UTF-8 grep -E '^[A-Z]' /etc/passwd
Debian-exim:x:100:103::/var/spool/exim4:/bin/false

Debian-exim:x:100:103::/var/spool/exim4:/bin/false

This behaviour change is not expected and different from what other
implementations do.
