Bug#561834: vdradmin-am and UTF8
So I have now changed LANG = in /var/lib/vdradmin-am/vdradmind.conf to LANG = sv_SE and that fixed the nameofday Ok, I think I see the problem. vdradmin uses an unusual way to determine, if utf-8 should be used. The charset is read from the gettext translation, and as there is no Swedish translation (feel free to provide one!), the html-encoding used is always iso8859-1 Yes, maybe I will translate at a later time. But not everyone want everything in Swedish but still want to have the names handled correctly. With this new version using LANG = sv_SE in vdradmind.conf, it will show up wrongly. But it will now work without the LANG defined so I removed that setting witch is the default. I did a quick test with sv_SE.UTF-8 and already forwarded the patches upstream, but it would be nice, if you could test this too and let me know, if it fixes your problems. Yes, thank you! It fixes the current problems, also the one with the recordings. How about using UTF-8 as standard web content encoding and then translations could change if something else is needed. Naturally iso8859-1 and others would have to be supported for sending correct coding to vdr but I see no big reason to support browsers that do no handle uft8 at this time. I still propose a wishlist to change the default web content-coding to UTF-8 and then allow for translations to change it if needed. ~cat channels.conf | wc -l 6366 With a one antenna and a satellite dish and many channels (not everyone viewable) , not every name and description fits into iso8859-1. I still do see channel-names that still look weird with the black diamond shape with the ? inside. Some of the errors is probably the channelcoding inside vdr but I think it shows the reason for a change. It is now translating everything from UTF8 to iso8859-1 only to show it on web pages and then back into UTF8 for vdr when this is not really needed. I guess this is another request that we should not handle in this bug, but it is related. -- Johan Thelmén -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I do see now that it DID change content encoding to UTF-8. Maybe it cached the previous main frame page some time. But I can not really explain it in another way. Bug#561834: vdradmin-am and UTF8
Hi I noticed that utf8 was fixed in 3.6.5-1 and then again broken in 3.6.5-2 after a new patch. Since it refers to this bug I decide to reopen. This time only some parts of UTF8 is broken, all displaing of weekdaynames all over pages that use it, I guess it come from some time display function perl i guess. http://87.227.108.179/vdr_dayname.png Should display Söndag instead of söndag. I notice webpages is now sent with charset=ISO-8859-1. The bad part is that it affect the recorded name in vdr. It probably forget to convert back to UTF8 when it communicates back to vdr. Like this http://87.227.108.179/vdrutf8.jpg The correct name is marked Skål when recording directly from vdr and if I select and recording the same program from vdradmin-am it look like the top entry in the list witch is not correct. This was no problem with the previous patch when it sent the webpages in utf8 encoding since then also the response to vdradmin-am and then back to vdr was also in utf8. It look like my vdr setting should be ok. telnet localhost 2001 220 tv SVDRP VideoDiskRecorder 1.6.0-2; Sun Feb 14 11:07:19 2010; UTF-8 I hope we can fix this again. -- Johan Thelmén -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#567057: octave3.2: need to rev libhdf5 version for compatibility with octave3.2-headers deps
Package: octave3.2 Version: 3.2.3-2 Severity: normal octave3.2-headers needs libhdf5-serial-dev which in turn needs libhdf5-serial-1.8.4. However, octave3.2 depends on libhdf5-serial-1.8.3. The two versions of libhdf5 conflict. This results in octave3.2-headers being uninstallable. The reason I am filing against octave3.2 is that octave3.2 needs to be fixed to use the newer libhdf5 1.8.4. Bug#564158: [libmlpcap-ocaml-dev] Invalid payload in callback function when reading a trace with pcap_loop
Hi 2010/1/8 Stéphane Glondu st...@glondu.net Johan Mazel a écrit : The size of pcap_payload is always -1. This means that we can never access to the data inside the packet. Actually, pcap_payload embeds a pointer outside the ML heap (ML block with unaligned_tag). I guess it is the libpcap receive buffer. As such, it is not marshallable nor usable with regular string functions. However, unsafe_* variants work fine (see pcap_loop.ml example for example). If you want to use it as a regular string, you'll have to unsafe_blit the contents into another OCaml string yourself. I fond this quite inelegant at first. But it allows to use pcap_payload as a bitstring without any string copy from libpcap buffer, with turned out to be interesting, especially in a highly sollicitated application. Best regards, -- Stéphane Thanks for the explanation. I have another remark to do. I think that the original code, the one that have been used to build the debian package, is the one from this this website: http://www.drugphish.ch/~jonny/mlpcap.htmlhttp://www.drugphish.ch/%7Ejonny/mlpcap.html. I figured it because the file mlpcap_0.9.orig.tar.gz from the page of the package http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libmlpcap-ocaml-dev contains the same file README than the mlpcap archive on the http://www.drugphish.ch/~jonny/mlpcap.htmlhttp://www.drugphish.ch/%7Ejonny/mlpcap.html . The version from http://www.drugphish.ch/~jonny/mlpcap.htmlhttp://www.drugphish.ch/%7Ejonny/mlpcap.htmldoesn't have this bug. Another problem is that both the pcap_loop.ml located in the directory tests (I think it is the file that you talk about when you talk about examples, correct me if I'm wrong) from the original package ( http://www.drugphish.ch/~jonny/mlpcap.htmlhttp://www.drugphish.ch/%7Ejonny/mlpcap.html) and the one from the page of the libmlpcap-ocaml-dev package, both use String.unsafe_*. But, as I said before, when you compile, install and use the original source, there is no problem with the value given to the callback function. Is it possible that Sylvain le Gall (the maintainer of this package) added a kind of protection to the Debian package that wopuld explain these two behaviours ? I'll try to install the package manually from its own source on a Debian machine to see wether I have a behaviour similar to the one of the original code or the package itself. Regards. Johan

Bug#564158: [libmlpcap-ocaml-dev] Invalid payload in callback function when reading a trace with pcap_loop
Package:libmlpcap-ocaml-dev Version 0.9-13 I'm trying to read a trace obtained through wireshark. I use pcap_loop to launch a callback function. The call function is supposed to look like something similar to this: let callback_process _ pkt_hdr pcap_payload = The type of pkt_hdr is PCAP.struct2. The type of pcap_payload is string. What is supposed to happen: The field caplen of pkt_hdr is supposed to contain the number of bytes inside the captured packet. This works perfectly. The packet itself is supposed to be contained inside pcap_payload. The size of pcap_payload is supposed to be equal to caplen and the size of the packet captured. What happens instead: The size of pcap_payload is always -1. This means that we can never access to the data inside the packet. I added an archive to this post with a simple example which show the problem. To use this code once compiled with the three lines after, simply give a trace name as the first parameter. ocamlfind ocamlopt -package pcap, -c packet_analyser.ml ocamlfind ocamlopt -package pcap, -c main.ml ocamlfind ocamlopt -package pcap, -linkpkg -cclib -lutil -o main packet_analyser.cmx main.cmx I have no idea of where does this problem comes from. Bug#562154: rkhunter: False warnings from USER_FILEPROP_FILES_DIRS
Hi Julien! The reason I added them to USER_FILEPROP_FILES_DIRS was the instructions for the RTKT_FILE_WHITELIST: # NOTE: It is recommended that if you whitelist any files, then you include # those files in the file properties check. See the USER_FILEPROP_FILES_DIRS # configuration option. # #RTKT_DIR_WHITELIST= #RTKT_FILE_WHITELIST= RTKT_FILE_WHITELIST=/etc/init.d/.depend.boot /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh /etc/init.d/hdparm /etc/init.d/bootlogd If those instructions are wrong, they should go as well. What can I do to get rid of them? USER_FILEPROP_FILES_DIRS is not what you are looking for (it is meant to exclude files from the file properties database). I guess you had a warning about the 'hdparm' string found in these scripts. To whitelist them, first get rid of the USER_FILEPROP_FILES_DIRS you have added, and use the RTKT_FILE_WHITELIST option. They will be added by default (commented) in the configuration file, see #559696. Cheers, Julien -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Even with the egrep memory clearing issue fixed (it was long time ago), grep still uses up ungodly amounts of CPU time while logcheck is running. If the above perl hack is the way to go, please implement it! Bug#534637: dpkg-source: 3.0 (git) should allow specification of debian branch in dsc
The proposed change to the source package format at http://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/2009/10/msg00154.html would fix this one as well: Whatever HEAD points to at the time of the source package creation is stored in the bundle, and when dpkg-source calls ‘git clone PKG_VER.git-bundle PKG-VER’, Git automatically does a checkout of HEAD. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#544274: python-numpy: conflict with libatlas3gf-base
Package: python-numpy Version: 1:1.3.0-3 Severity: normal I believe I have the same issue. My test script looks like: import numpy as np for ix in range(2, 300): print ix m = np.random.random((ix, ix)) (x, v) = np.linalg.eig(m) print v.shape Running the above code with python-numpy _and_ libatlas3gf-base installed generates a glibc memory management error message. Running the same script with python-numpy installed but _without_ libatlas3gf-base installed is unproblematic for me. Both unstable and testing show the same behaviour. Bug#543281: reportbug: --template should not create windows
Package: reportbug Version: 4.6 Severity: normal If you set ui to gtk2 in the .reportbug, then reportbug --template reportbug will pop up a (rather useless) window (if you are in X) or spew a bunch of error messages (if you are at console). This breaks interaction with other packages, e.g., debian-el, which want to capture stdout from reportbug. Bug#541737: grub-pc: long delay before menu
Package: grub-pc Version: 1.96+20090808-1 Severity: normal I have fixed my reportbug issue. I see that I not quite alone in this issue as Nyizsnyik Ferenc has chimed in on this very bug and Michael Musenbrock seems to be trying to reopen Bug#541145: grub-pc: menu and kernels load extremely slow. These two bugs can probably be merged as they seem to be the same thing. As only a few people have filed this bug, I reckon it is probably something to do with the particulars of my machine configuration. I am sending this to add information which was lacking the first time around. This gives my grub.cfg file. See further down. Bug#541729: debian-el: bad interaction with reportbug
Package: debian-el Version: 30.3-1 Severity: normal If you scroll down, you will a bunch of gtk errors. This is because I am writing this in emacs running a console, i.e., without X-windows. With X-windows, I get a pop window which I can really only hit cancel on and it leaves the buffer in an even worse condition. I am not sure if it is a bad reportbug, bad debian-el, bad configuration of reportbug or debian-el needs to apply options to reportbug to prevent it from trying to launch pop-up windows. Bug#541737: grub-pc: long delay before menu
Package: grub-pc Severity: normal When I boot, I get hit with a very long delay before grub shows its menu. First, I get to look at a heading with GRUB Version 1.96 with a paragraph about minimal bash editing. This lasts for nearly 60 seconds. Next, the screen is black. This lasts for pretty much exactly 60 seconds by my watch. The exactness seems to suggest a time-out of some sort. After the two minutes of waiting, I get a menu and can boot like usual. This is, therefore, not crippling my system, but it sure is annoying. I have seen another report of this, but that person was able to re-install grub and it went away for them. I have tried to use grub-install to put grub on the MBR. This didn't help. How can I debug this issue? For what it's worth, I am running Version: 1.96+20090808-1. Something is messed up with debian-el and reportbug. Thus there are no package versions auto-attached. I filed a bug against that earlier today. Bug#539539: liferea: crash when creating a certain search folder under locale sv_SE.UTF-8
Emilio Pozuelo Monfort skrev: Johan Grönqvist wrote: the application crashes with the following error mesasage written to terminal ERROR:db.c:1189:db_query_to_sql: assertion failed: (0 == tables) Avbruten (SIGABRT) I can't reproduce it. Can you install liferea-dbg and get a backtrace? First a comment: The behaviour is different now. I needed to add a fourth rule to the search folder to trigger the SIGABRT. Adding the three rules described in the initial report now worked, but adding a fourth rule (channel-name not containing MIT) gave me the SIGABRT again. The only guesses I have as to what is responsible for the change is numerous restarts of liferea, and one restart of the computer. I installed liferea-dbg, then ran gdb /usr/bin/liferea and after provoking the crash I typed bt to get a backtrace. Bug#539197: RFP: wetball -- multiplayer game to collect objects on a map
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: wetball Version : 0.1 Upstream Author : Johan Euphrosine pro...@aminche.com * URL or Web page : http://wetball.mekensleep.com/ * License : AGPL-3 Description : multiplayer game to collect objects on a map wetball is an online multiplayer game in which the player walks a map and collects objects. The server handles the placement of objects on the map. The client asks the server for the objects found around a designated location. When an object is returned to the client, it can be collected and is removed from the map. A simple REST interface to the server has been designed and documented to encourage the development of alternative clients. Although geolocalisation is a popular subject and number of application are deployed on the web, there is no multiplayer geolocalisation game in debian. This application could be used as a technical example. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#534801: Sound blaster?
So far so good. According to some Ubuntu bug that I can't seem to locate any more the root cause for these messages is a kernel bug that is supposedly resolved in 2.6.30. Thanks for the pointers Norbert! Regards //Johan 2009/7/19 Norbert Veber nve...@debian.org: I had the same issue with a sblive card. The docs at http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/Modules say: tsched Use system-timer based model (aka glitch-free). Defaults to 1 (enabled). If your hardware does not return accurate timing information (e.g. Creative sound cards) you can try to set tsched=0 to enable the interupt based timing which was used in 0.9.10 and before. So the fix was to change the hal moudle in /etc/pulse/default.pa to: load-module module-hal-detect tsched=0 Thanks, Norbert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#523923: Better anacron-friendliness
Here's another update to the launcher script. This version doesn't use any time stamp files, but looks at the mtimes of the actual backup directories instead. Less things to keep track of and less things that can go wrong. It also requires each group to be full before going onto the next one. Rsnapshot doesn't seem to handle half-filled groups, and this works around that problem. Now, rsnapshot's exit code is propagated as well, so if you want to check for that, you can. Bug#470299: bubblemon: Unexpectly dies
The code in which this crash occurs is gone in newer versions of Bubblemon, so they shouldn't crash in there any more. IO wait is now measured instead of network load. Latest release is 2.0.13 and can be downloaded from here: https://savannah.nongnu.org/files/?group=bubblemon Regards //Johan 2009/1/10 Johan Walles johan.wal...@gmail.com: Not a compiler problem then, let's shoot for memory-handling problems. They can be easily found using Valgrind, and are a mess to track down otherwise: * Build unoptimized and with debug metadata to improve stack traces: make clean ; make CFLAGS=-O0 -g * Install Valgrind if you don't have it already: sudo apt-get install valgrind * Remove bubblemon from any panel. * Launch bubblemon in valgrind: valgrind ./src/bubblemon-gnome2 * Wait for 20 seconds. This step is really important. When running inside Valgrind, bubblemon needs some time to start up. The only way to notice if this step is done is to have another system load meter, and when it goes back down to 0, you can go on to the next step. Nothing will appear on any panel until the next step. Unless you wait long enough, another bubblemon will be started outside of Valgrind. * Add bubblemon to a panel somewhere. You'll notice that it's running inside Valgrind by that it's really slow to start up. It seems like Valgrind JITs things at least on IA32, since for me showing the tooltip or the menu for the first time are really slow, but then get a lot faster. * After bubblemon crashes, please send me all output you have in the terminal window. Hopefully Valgrind will provide one or more stack traces helping track down the source of the error. If you get stack traces with lots of ??s in them, you might need to install the gnome-dbg and libc6-dbg packages to be able to get proper stack traces through GNOME and libc code. Bug#525109: python-scipy: sparse (dok) matrix assignment bug
Package: python-scipy Version: 0.7.0-1 Severity: normal The three line program: from scipy import sparse arr = sparse.dok_matrix((1, 1)) arr[0, 0] = 0 fails with a KeyError. This is fixed in scipy svn, so the next release should fix the bug automatically. The fix in svn is a change to the definition of __setitem__ in scipy/sparse/dok.py if value==0: should be changed to if value==0 and self.has_key((i,j)): but waiting for the next release will solve it automatically. Package: rsnapshot Version: 1.3.0-2 Severity: wishlist Hi! Here's a cron and anacron friendly launcher script for rsnapshot. Just drop it into /etc/cron.hourly and everything will be taken care of. When called it checks how long ago the different backups (monthly, weekly, daily, hourly) were successfully performed, and performs the relevant one, if any. Bug#520254: Misc fixes for unhide-20080519
tags 520254 patch thanks I'm seeing unhide crashes as well. Here are two patches that fixes all crashes I'm seeing. The first, unhide-20080519-fixwarnings.diff fixes all compiler warnings when building unhide-linux26. The second, unhide-20080519-nowarnings-fixcrashes.diff fixes two file handle leaks, and changes an exit() call inside vfork() to _exit(). According to the vfork() man page, the child process isn't allowed to call exit(), but can call _exit(). It will still add another newline when sending to a remote host. I will try to find that one also. Another way to fix this would be to filter the EOL whitespace at some later stage. Bug#515735: mirror submission for debian.mirror.cambrium.nl
On Saturday 7 March 2009 13:31:40 Simon Paillard wrote: Is there a reason we should know to not use ftp.nl.debian.org ? Indeed, ftp.nl.d.o is a very good mirror, with a better availability than mirrors.kernel.org. Yes. ftp.nl.debian.org is *very* slow compared to mirrors.kernel.org. The rsync processes timeout quite often. Maybe investigate if you have some time, because the cause explaining bad speed between you and ftp.nl.d.o may imply bad speed between your mirror and Debian users somewhere in NL. It looked like overload on ftp.nl. We have lots of bandwidth available, so that wouldn't seem like a problem to me. The box itsself has a gigabit link with less than 100 Mbit usage on average. We have a 30 gbit amsix connection, 10 gbit Deutsche Telekom transit and 10 gbit Tata telecom (aka Teleglobe) transit. Additionally, we have one gigabit of backup transit if all else fails. Updates: twice You may setup push mirroring in order to get maximum freshness : http://debian.org/mirrors/push_mirroring Ok, I'll fix that tomorrow :) DO you have news about the push mirroring setup ? I have replaced anonftpsync with ftpsync. However, how do I tell a push mirror that it should tell our mirror box to start mirroring? BTW, you can safely remove http://debian.mirror.cambrium.nl/debian-non-US/ which is deprecated for a long time. As anonftpsync isn't used anymore, I guess this is automatically fixed now :) PS. My apologies for not getting back to you earlier. I've been very busy the last 2 weeks and now have time available to fix up everything. Package: ruby1.8 Version: 1.8.7.72-3 Severity: wishlist File: /usr/bin/ruby I would like to be able to specify File::NOATIME mode when opening a file through File.new(): irb(main):001:0 f = File.new(file, File::RDONLY|File::NOATIME) NameError: uninitialized constant File::NOATIME from (irb):1 from :0 From the open(2) man page: O_NOATIME (Since Linux 2.6.8) Do not update the file last access time (st_atime in the inode) when the file is read(2). This flag is intended for use by indexing or backup programs, where its use can significantly reduce the amount of disk activity. This flag may not be effective on all file systems. One example is NFS, where the server maintains the access time. Here's the definition of O_NOATIME from /usr/include/bits/fcntl.h: #ifdef __USE_GNU # define O_DIRECT04 /* Direct disk access. */ # define O_DIRECTORY020 /* Must be a directory. */ # define O_NOFOLLOW 040 /* Do not follow links. */ # define O_NOATIME 0100 /* Do not set atime. */ # define O_CLOEXEC 0200 /* Set close_on_exec. */ #endif Thanks //Johan -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages ruby1.8 depends on: ii libc6 2.7-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libruby1.81.8.7.72-3 Libraries necessary to run Ruby 1. ruby1.8 recommends no packages. Bug#518583: pigz: Please provide an alternative for gzip
Package: pigz Version: 2.1.4-1 Severity: wishlist The package description says that pigz is a fully functional replacement for gzip. As such, couldn't you provide an /etc/alternatives setting for it so that if I install pigz I can launch it by just typing gzip? Bug#518608: debsums: Please use O_NOATIME when opening files for checksumming
Package: debsums Version: 2.0.41 Severity: wishlist Please use O_NOATIME when opening files for checksumming. This will increase performance, and it will help people who use atime to determine when a program was last executed (like popularity-contest). man 2 open says: O_NOATIME (Since Linux 2.6.8) Do not update the file last access time (st_atime in the inode) when the file is read(2). This flag is intended for use by indexing or backup programs, where its use can significantly reduce the amount of disk activity. indexing or backup programs sounds just like debsums to me :-). Bug#517872: transmission-gtk: Sort order in peer tab should default to by %
Package: transmission-gtk Version: 1.40-5 Severity: wishlist Double click on an active torrent. Open the Peers tab. The list of peers is sorted alphabetically by IP address. I would prefer if the default sort order was by % done, with the most complete peers at the top. % is a good default sort key because it is informative, and it doesn't fluctuate that much. Up / Down are informative, but fluctuate too much to be helpful as sort keys. Status, Address and Client shouldn't be sorted by because they aren't very informative. It can manipulate complete columns of numbers in the form of vector arithmetic. FUDGIT is also an expression language interpreter understanding most of C grammar except pointers. It used to be in the Debian release until a few years ago. I discussed this at debian-scie...@lists.debian.org and got one reply: Go for it. I contacted Gudjon Gudjonsson, who updated Fudgit to the latest libraries: http://195.198.146.229/debian/source/ He does not want to be the official maintainer and asked me instead. For now, I copied his fudgit files to my own URL.
