Bug#599680: blender: Additional info

 Hi thanks for the report.

After quickly looking at the code, I've spotted that sse2 support is detected
and enabled at build time when WITH_RAYOPTIMIZATION is configured.
The only part of code using sse2 optimization is the raytrace and there is
already a BLI_cpu_support_sse2 function to detect if it can be used.

I've actually no hardware without sse or/and sse2 ( sorry intel only ) , so
please could someone use the blender-dbg package with gdb and a cpu
without-sse2 and post the traceback here? This could help me find where the
 BLI_cpu_support_sse2 needs to be called.

ok, i'll get back to you on that.

 KiBi.

Doubled fonts: you'd have the displayed font, then a second display to
the left and up; I installed 7.7.1 and fixed the problem. So I don't
have a screenshot now, but you can see an example by typing something
in GMIP, copy that and paste it, and move it up a little. The apps I
tried it with were warzone2100, oolite. In oolite they were even
scrambled. I tried in libreoffice and it seemed OK there. It might be
SDL apps, hmm.

thanks for your time

 Hi,

Due to this bug, grub2 1.98~20091210-1 and the previous version were
unable to boot correctlẏ. The problem came up when trying to load
 the
linux module. When you try to insmod 'linux' that error pops up and
you're completely unable to load a kernel image at all.

Say you're at the grub rescue prompt, you try `insmod linux`, grub
 then
says the symbol grub_printf_ not found and exits with an error,
making it so that you cannot boot at all. This is why I call it grave.

I'm using beta1 right now because of this. Some of the also working
 ones
aren't present in the repos anymore (I wish archive.debian.org was
 still
 up).

Unfortunately you reported this against the grub2 dummy package instead
 of the correct grub-pc.
 What does `echo GET grub-pc/install_devices | debconf-communicate' say?
Probable the postinst ran grub-install on the disk which you don't boot
 from.

0 /dev/hda

I only boot from one. And yes at the time it was correct. I haven't
booted the ubuntu in weeks, and even then I made sure the debian
partition was the last one I installed to the MBR.

And so this is probable just a duplicate of #554790

I see the issue, and I noticed that - in practice, understanding it in
theory, but not having thought it out thoroughly - is that due to the
hd to ds change, the core.img wasn't synced therefore causes this (and
other potential) issue(s). I imagine you're running this new version?

Bug#550892: libpam-mount: mounts/unmounts defined mounts when first mounted

Must be hal then, or some other thing. Nothing in either the server or
the client logs about what did it, obviously it would be on the
client, but that's no help, as there's no trace of it in the log. I'll
stick some ps auxw command in my .zlogin so i can see what processes
get run at the time, maybe on a for loop. obviously to get a process
table dump after the fact is pointless.

OK, well, I've done that now, and I'm not seeing anything that could
cause it. pam-mount works fine... what's more relevant is this IMO:

That's me mounting /A to /D, then something else unmounting:

=
Oct 27 02:10:10 pylon mountd[x]: authenticated mount request from
192.168.yyy.zzz:861 for /A (/A)

Oct 27 02:10:32 pylon mountd[x]: authenticated unmount request

that's from the server... so it gets a request to unmount them as soon
as they get mounted. Right now I'm running gnome. Normally I'm running
xfce or openbox. Gonna try in one of my other session types, see if
it's some stupid gui thing causing it or not (I'm think it is). I'll
send an update your way (and the BTS) when I have more info.

Waaah! Now it did it again. pam-mount sees it unmounted, so mounts
them, then whatever sees them mounted, unmounts them. GRR!

Actually, looks like it is pam-mount, but indirectly, cron seems to be
doing it, probably via pam_session, is my guess.

Bug#550892: libpam-mount: mounts/unmounts defined mounts when first mounted

2009-10-13 Thread Simon Raven
Package: libpam-mount
Version: 1.32-1
Severity: important

hi,

Once one of the defined mounts is mounted, it continually unmounts it,
and mounts it again, in a cycle like that, all the time - literally. Day
or night, whether it's busy or not, it'll unmount it, then re-mount it a
bit later. This has been going on since the last upgrade to the
package.

It's annoying to have it unmount something when you're working on a
file, go to save it, then the program you're using tells you it isn't
there anymore.

(a random bit of venting there, wasn't directed at you the maintainer,
nothing personal at all, ok ? :))

thanks,
simon

Bug#548933: xserver-xorg: SEGV in radeon module on start

2009-09-29 Thread Simon Raven
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.4+4
Severity: normal

kwe,

This should probably go to the relevant module package, my apologies if
I've done something wrong unintentionally.

Last night when restarting my X session, the server was crashing,
behaving abnormally. Then the dialog-based window came up from gdm
would you like to see the error so I check it out, and seems the
radeon driver was crashing out on me.. It wasn't doing this before, so I
figure it was the new update for Xorg, Xephyr, et al. doing it.

I'll paste the backtrace I got in the Xorg.0.log:

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support

As you can see, something changed and it's making the radeon_srv.so module
crash.

PS: This AGP card I have to have an xorg.conf because EXA didn't used to be the
default,
and I have to force the mode to 4x, otherwise it starts making my mouse cursor
jiggle
from *something*, and eventually bring the whole box down (hard lock-up)
(separate issue).
The mode doesn't get detected properly I suspect, since it spits out something
like
putting the card into 0x mode in the log. Please make a not of this, but
don't include
this in *this* bug report, as it's a separate issue.

thanks,
Simon

Bug#532010: IP6 addresses in IP4 iptables-restore output makes ferm exit 141

2009-06-05 Thread Simon Raven
Package: ferm
Version: 2.0.5-1
Severity: important

hi,

It shouldn't even be inserting those types of rules into the save file,
because - of course - iptables* doesn't understand ip6tables*
rulesets, which makes iptables(-restore,-save} die, which makes ferm
die.

examples:

=
ferm --slow -i ferm.conf
iptables v1.4.2: invalid mask `128' specified
Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information.

=
ferm -i ferm.conf
iptables-restore v1.4.2: invalid mask `128' specified
Error occurred at line: 199
Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information.
=

Which comes from this, and others like it:

=
...
-A INPUT --destination ::1/128 --jump ACCEPT

Bug#531807: powerpc-utils: large nvramrc makes nvsetenv barf

2009-06-04 Thread Simon Raven
Package: powerpc-utils
Version: 1.1.3-22
Severity: important

hi,

I have this OldWorld box, and it has a large nvramrc patch applied to
its firmware. Now this is so large that it makes the command barf:

nvsetenv boot-device /pci/Apple53C875Card/s...@0:7,grubof.modules
string value in variable 25 is too long (1729 bytes)

is what I get whenever I do a command of any sort, but I can directly
check the contents from /proc/device-tree/ entries, so it's not the
firmware, but the util that's got the problem.

Taking a wild, semi-uneducated guess, I'd say it was some sort of buffer
issue, and the app refusing to execute fully because it would overflow
otherwise, or something like that.

thanks,
simon

Bug#526613: wiki.debian.org: offensive icon

2009-05-02 Thread Simon Raven
Package: wiki.debian.org
Severity: normal

http://wiki.debian.org/Portal/IDB?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=icon-community-32x32.png

The title attribute IDs it as Portal/IDB/icon-community-32x32.png.

This icon is a) stereotyping so-called North American Indigenous
peoples, and I would highly recommend and demand that this icon be
changed. I don't see why a stereotype of us should be used to represent
community. I'm sure non-Indigenous people have communities too, and have
a sense of community, why should we be made an example in such a
negative way? Sure we have a lot to offer the rest of the non-Indigenous
world, and have, a LOT, but hey, don't keep up the false images. We
don't all live in tipis on Great Turtle Island (North America), you know.

Thanks for your time,

simon

Bug#516395: reprepro: removes Release.new when needed by gpgme with SignWith: set

2009-02-27 Thread Simon Raven
hi,

BTW, seems that reprepro chokes on a GPG key if it has more than one
key in it. I have a gmail.com and a .org one in the key used to sign the
packages,
and I substituted the fingerprint ID for the email address I was using in the
distributions
file, and not only does reprepro NOT choke, but apt and friends (aptitude)
don't either.

So, I figure you should probably make a note in the manual page about this, so
others
don't get bit by the same issue. I'd call it an usage issue, more than a bug.

thanks

Why is it removing the Release.new when it needs to sign it? Seems like a bug

Bug#511103: apache2-mpm-prefork: SEGV NOT fixed in 2.2.11-2 either

2009-02-12 Thread Simon Raven
2009/2/11 Stefan Fritsch s...@debian.org:

Somehow you ended up with the sid/unstable version of apache instead
of the lenny/testing version (which is 2.2.9-10+lenny2).

I did that on purpose, to see if Sid's was crashing like Lenny's was. And it is.

 crash output follows:

Feb 11 06:52:45 pylon kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging

pylon kernel: Oops: Kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1]

Um, it's a segfault in the application. How is that different?

NOTHING else is crashing this way. So it isn't the kernel.

It seems extremely unlikely to me that this is the same issue as bug
#511103. Please open a new bug instead of using this one.

In fact, it looks more like a kernel issue. What is in apache error
log? Any messages about segfaults or resource shortage? If apache

Yes, several in the error.log

 Kernel: Linux 2.6.28.4-pylon

This is not a Debian kernel. Please try again with the Debian kernel.

Tthe debian kernel does not boot at all, even after reconstructing the
initrd a few times, so no, I won't, since there's no point.

How about addressing the issue instead of blaming me?

Don't take this the wrong way, but when the only application that's
crashing in such a way takes down my machine when restarts, and I get
blamed for it, that rather ticks me off, especially when I didn't
build it myself. I'd understand if I had done so - in fact, I wouldn't
be writing in a bug report, I'd suck it up and deal with it.

Bug#511103: apache2-mpm-prefork: SEGV NOT fixed in 2.2.11-2 either

2009-02-10 Thread Simon Raven
Package: apache2-mpm-prefork
Version: 2.2.11-2
Followup-For: Bug #511103

Not only is it NOT fixed, but it's so bad that it takes the machine down
with it, *requiring* a reboot. I've had to do this 4 times today alone.
Almost every single time I go to restart apache, it crashes this way.

BTW, the load average on the machine also skyrockets, even though
almost nothing is running. I tried running iotop, but my kerneldoesn't
support it seems (that's what it told me, more or less).

I just updated to Lenny from an Etch install, to beat the rush so to speak,
and now I'm re-considering that, and downgrading everything to Etch.

I even recompiled my kernel to see if that would help anything, and of
course it didn't. If I'm coming across as pissed off, I am, but I seriously
do not want to come at you the wrong way. It's just extremely frustrating.

Yesterday on #debian on freenode, it was suggested to me to lower my worker
count to as low as I could get it. I haven't done that, though I doubt
it'll help much. I'll try it, but I'm not holding my breath.

5.66 5.82 4.73
pretty much the only active process at the moment:
/usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf

I'd call it odd, wouldn't you? ;)

stupid PEBKAC. /lib/libdl* was symlinked BADLY, to an old version from
2005, making most stuff using dlopen() and futexes crash horribly.

As such, I made a foreign lenny debootstrap to compare notes, so to
speak, and thus found the culprit, and fixed the symlink. Suggestion:
maybe check the files, including symlinks, to make sure they're OK,
during upgrades like this. Probably too much to ask, since how does
say aptitude know if you've switched versions? There's no real
meta-data like that AFAIK. Anyway, just a thought. Thanks for your
attention, and have a good day.

Bug#478409: problem with SEGV still persists

 paraphrased:

hm, I copied the wrong shell history line it seems, oops... I meant

Bug#497050: ifupdown: similar to #497050, except it seems to hang during the pre-up with nfs

2008-09-01 Thread Simon Raven
Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.7~alpha3
Followup-For: Bug #497050

hi,

well, i have those nfs mounts marked as noauto, but seems to delay
interminably even though it's a simple ifup. i have yet to confirm if
it's a hardware issue or not, but i haven't seen this happen with this
NIC in a previousincarnation. it's almost like there's some kernel related
thing since i've updated to 2.6.26 (was runningg .25).

ifupdown hitting a kernel bug? i'm using debian-patched kernel source.

hi, found the bug, it's in /etc/grub.d/10_linux; in the test_GT()
function, where [ `CompareVersions $a $b` = 1 ] is (my copy, your
copy will have [ `CompareVersions $a $b` == 1 ] ).

Bug#476431: gpm makes apps hang if running; they run normally if stopped

2008-04-16 Thread Simon Raven
Package: gpm
Version: 1.20.3~pre3-3
Severity: normal

hi,

i just finished a run of aptitude (update/upgrade). i do my aptitude run, then
when i hit Press return to continue. and do so, aptitude hangs just before
it clears the screen to show its window. when gpm is stopped, it continues to
run
normally. this also happens with other apps that are built with libgpmg support
(w3m, others). when stopped, aptitude does this in syslog:

Bug#474060: nvidia-glx-legacy-71xx: uninstallable package version 71.86.04-1 due to conflicting depends

2008-04-02 Thread Simon Raven
Package: nvidia-glx-legacy-71xx
Version: 71.86.01-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

hi,

as the subject says, one of the Depends: in debian/control ends up with
a conflicting package of nvidia-glx, due to some odd thing with
${shlibs:Depends}. it ends up inserting nvidia-glx in the Depends:.
probably needs to edit anything nvidia- stuff out so it doesn't conflict
with co-uninstallable packages, and also add a Conflicts: on other similar
packages (e.g. nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx).

thanks,

simon

Bug#473849: adanaxisgpl: weird cpu use and crashes

2008-04-01 Thread Simon Raven
Package: adanaxisgpl
Version: 1.2.5.dfsg.1-1
Severity: important

hi,

up until now, i've been enjoying this unique game.. thanks for packaging this.

i'm on Gravity Waves, and 2 things happen to make this impossible to
finish the level.

1) if i don't go after certain of 2 reds, later on in the game, about 20
seconds game
time, it'll disappear most ship, except for a select number of of blue ships,
and the
cpu gets hogged by the game, pinning it. this forces me to kill the game. of
course my
mouse stops working, but re-running the game makes it ok again (frees up the
device again;
little trick i learned :)

2) if i do, then the game SEGVs, taking the screen and mouse with it, when i
hit it with
a dark blue missile.

i think that particular level has a bug, since i never saw this with the other
ones.

hi again,

this time, i got a dump.

seems that it crashes when the gravity wave kicks in and you start
spinning around, crashing it with a SEGV, or pinning the CPU.

Bug#471409: lighttpd: SEGV when daemon spawns child; clone() call segfaults

2008-03-18 Thread Simon Raven
Package: lighttpd
Version: 1.4.19-1
Severity: normal

hi,

i'm filing this from an x86 box, but the bug is in PPC, i don't see this
behaviour
in x86. i've run the daemon through strace, and right when it spawns off a
child with
clone(), the parent SEGVs, making the pid file for s-s-d, and other issues, go
buggery.

a bit before, and a bit after what i said:

=
12428 rt_sigaction(SIGTTOU, {SIG_IGN}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
12428 rt_sigaction(SIGTTIN, {SIG_IGN}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
12428 rt_sigaction(SIGTSTP, {SIG_IGN}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
12428 clone(child_stack=0,
flags=CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID|CLONE_CHILD_SETTID|SIGCHLD, child_tidptr=0x4801c3e8)
= 12429
12428 --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
12429 rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {SIG_IGN}, unfinished ...
12428 +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
12429 ... rt_sigaction resumed {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0

12429 getpeername(11, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=/var/run/slapd/ldapi}, [23]) = 0
12429 fcntl64(11, F_GETFD) = 0x1 (flags FD_CLOEXEC)
=

the bug has existed since a few package versions ago. i've tried backports,
same problem.
as a consequnce of this bug, the package configuration fails.

thanks
simon

hi,

please close this bug, it was a bit too jumping the gun, seems that the emacs
process
needed to be restarted to have the new gtk2 lib in memory. thanks for your time.

2008-02-13 Thread Simon Raven
Package: libgtk2.0-0
Version: 2.12.8-1

hi,

I get visual artifacts when i scroll emacs-snapshot around, like the text
of some lines are overlapping each other, making it very hard to read.
the artifacts disappear if i shade/unshade the window. i'm suspecting either
cairo or gtk2, but gtk2 and poppler are the only updates that would affect
the visuals that i got today (13/02/2008) (and i doubt poppler has anything
to do with it).

thanks,

Bug#457491: grub2: FTBFS continues, more in e-mail

2008-02-10 Thread Simon Raven
Package: grub2
Version: 1.96+20080209-1
Followup-For: Bug #457491

hi,

I'm trying to backport grub2 to Etch. My installed GCC version is 4.1.1
(Etch's), nothing fancy (I also checked `cc --version' and it spat out:

=
cc (GCC) 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)
...
=

I get this error on build:

=
kernel_elf-kernel_elf_symlist.o:(.data+0x54): undefined reference to
`__floatundisf'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

the patch was applied as normal, but seems this hack is't helping
anything for Etch GCC at all. I've read the BTS messages, and it would
seem that that something else is in order.

I imagine I could remove or edit that patch, despite it being built with GCC
4.1.x.

Any input welcome,
simon

Bug#451950: xserver-xorg-core: doesn't see any mode larger than 800x600

2007-11-19 Thread Simon Raven
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.4.1~git20071117-1

hi,

restarting X earlier left me with a nasty surprise. after checking the
log, it was telling me no modes of that name (1024x768) even though the
version previous it was working fine. seems it forgot that others
modes exist beyond 800x600. anything else it saw fine.

people with the problem: leave it on hold, or downgrade it to 2:1.4-3
until it gets fixed.

thanks

The second line works here, too.

bleh. doesn't here - been trying on and off since i filed.

i get that funky /htdocs error from another bug (#317460).

That likely means that the DocumentRoot is not defined for the
VirtualHost Apache is trying to serve. It could also mean that Apache
does not find a VirtualHost for the request (Debian's main server
config does not have a DocumentRoot defined).

i tried with and without, both were borked in various ways. i've
checked dns too, and the only ip there is is for the machine in
question, so that's not it either.

  either
  way, DirectoryIndex index.foo index.bar ... doesn't kick in.

does /etc/mods-enabled/autoindex.load exist? Try a2enmode autoindex.

sure does, and i even ran a2enmod again to make sure, and cd'ed to it,
etc. it's enabled.

  on
another host, with the same DirectoryIndex, it works fine. It seems
like either PEBKAC or actual s/w error. i've been working on it for
6 hours (4 hours straight, and 2 now).

A configuration error seems more likely to me.

i hope so, frankly. i was kinda hoping to not have to enable
DocumentRoot for it because of the problems that caused. i was trying
to emulate UserDir, since that's only giving me headaches.

the dir layout i want to work with/ implement is

/home/$USER/public_html/pub/ (so ~$USER/bin/ can be served up by
http://FQDN/users/bin/ as CGI scripts). as soon as i insert that pub/
it breaks.i've tried allowing for it with regexen, but no luck.

 Cheers,
 Stefan

thanks

Bug#175994: coreutils: 'id' and 'id username' don't return same output, same user running it

2007-10-06 Thread Simon Raven
Package: coreutils
Version: 5.97-5.4
Followup-For: Bug #175994

hi,

Just realised something about id: when i run 'id' and 'id myusername', as same
user,
i do not get the same output, the former lacks LDAP info. IMO they should
return the
same info. they used to, i think they still do in etch

*runs to check*

they sure do. the etch box i just checked has coreutils 5.97-5.3. so something
changed between -5.3 and -5.4 that borked it. please fix this, it had me
confused for
a while since i use it to debug ldap lookups, and there might be other things
that use this
to look up group memberships.

thanks for your time,
simon

Bug#439355: libnss-ldapd: the library file should go in /lib not /usr/lib

2007-08-24 Thread Simon Raven
Package: libnss-ldapd
Version: 0.2.1
Severity: important

add --libdir=/lib to the ./configure run in debian/rules and it fixes this.
applications expect to see libnss_* to be in /lib, not /usr/lib . also, this
defeats
the purpose of the software if /usr happens to be mounted from NFS or on a
separate
local partition, or other situations.

=
footnote: also, please see the sed bug in the libnss-ldap package's bug
reports, seems
this package suffers from this bug. this bug makes the postinst fail miserably
(poor thing, heh), making it fail to install.

Bug#433725: pure-ftpd-ldap: [PATCH] fix for alternate schema IA5StringMatch - BooleanMatch

2007-07-19 Thread Simon Raven
Package: pure-ftpd-ldap
Version: 1.0.21-8
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

hi,

Submitting a patch to test for either enabled or TRUE. These values
are used in the original IA5StringMatch, or BooleanMatch, respectively,
for the LDAP-enabled pure-ftpd daemon. I haven't tested it but I think
it will a) work b) compile.

very simple:

Just simply ORing the if statement test for enable or TRUE. Why?
because some people have the old schema, and some the new one, in their
LDAP servers, and this gives them a chance to switch their user entries
over without hassles, and people can use either schema as designed.

kwe kwe,

My build dir has setguid bits set, and dpkg-deb doesn't like that, so
I've added some bits to make it actually build the deb instead of
skipping the build.

starting from line 365:

365: cd ..
366:+ find $instdir -type d -print0 | xargs -0 chmod 755
367: fakeroot dpkg-deb -b $instdir .

this find + xargs make the build script and dpkg-deb happy.

Bug#353443: apache2: Seeing this bug again; php script on SSL vhost

2006-10-21 Thread Simon Raven

severity 353443 serious
thanks

hi again,

Seems that after even disabling SSL for the vhost, the login never
happens at all. No matter what kind of language the site is based on
(php, perl, whatever) no matter what I do logins never take. Since
this makes things very difficult for me and others, I am forced to
downgrade to apache 2.0, and the other dependent packages as well.

Bug#386077: libpam-ldap: postinst a bit borked; perl search/replace have '/', recommend using '|' or other char instead

2006-09-04 Thread Simon Raven
Package: libpam-ldap
Version: 180-1.1
Severity: normal

In two of the postinst's functions, I changed:

in mine, starts on line 38, might be a bit off because I added a 'set -x' at
the top, and removed some blank lines.

(fake diffs)

in function change_value():

# i really need a better way to do this...
# currently we replace only the first match, we need a better
# way of dealing with multiple hits.
- perl -i -p -e s/$replacestring/$parameter $value/i
+ perl -i -p -e s|$replacestring|$parameter $value|i
and \$match=1 if (\$match != 1) $CONFFILE
fi
}

and in function disable_param():

enabled=0
egrep -q ^$parameter $CONFFILE enabled=1
if [ $enabled = 1 ]; then
- perl -i -p -e s/^($parameter .*)/#\$1/i $CONFFILE
+ perl -i -p -e s|^($parameter .*)|#\$1|i $CONFFILE
fi
}

This was done because they might falsely match on '://' and 'dc=foo,dc=bar',
which resulted in the following install error:

Setting up libpam-ldap (180-1.1) ...
Bareword found where operator expected at -e line 1, near //iskwahtemis
(Missing operator before kwahtemis?)
syntax error at -e line 1, near ldaps:
Search pattern not terminated at -e line 1.
dpkg: error processing libpam-ldap (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255

Thanks, it works otherwise :).

Bug#376868: dpkg-dev: dpkg-parsechangelog fails with a signal 13 on tail

2006-07-14 Thread Simon Raven
Le ven 2006-07-14 a 18:09:10 -0400, Nicolas François [EMAIL PROTECTED] a dit:
 Hello,

Thanks to Simone's answers on jabber, we could identify a possible cause
 for this bug.

It seems this issue is related to using getpwnam on an LDAP system.

  perl -e 'open(STDIN, debian/changelog) || die error1;
   open(P,tail -n 40 |) || die error2;
   close(P); print status: $?\n'

works (i.e. the status is 0).

 but  perl -e '@foo=getpwnam ($ENV{'LOGNAME'});
   open(STDIN, debian/changelog) || die error1;
   open(P,tail -n 40 |) || die error2;
   close(P); print status: $?\n'

does not always work (sometimes the status is 13, sometime it is 0; nscd may
 help).
This could be reproduced on another LDAP system (other than Simone's one).

Simone, I forgot to ask you if you're using nscd.

Simon, do you also have an LDAP system? Do you use nscd?

yes. no, due to that it often causes unneeded issues. no caching.

 What's the output of:
 perl -e '@foo=getpwnam ($ENV{'LOGNAME'});
  open(STDIN, debian/changelog) || die error1;
  open(P,tail -n 40 |) || die error2;

hi,

i saw there was some bugs building the module on 2.6.16, so i decided
to go looking for a fix, found one, but it's only for 8178 or whatever
it's called, and i tried backporting it to 7174, but i'm getting
frustrated with it. if i fix it properly, - or so i think - i get
remap_page_range as an undefined symbol. it's like i fix one, then i one
reappears.

if anyone can figure this thing out, i'll be very thankful of their
patience and effort‥ i'm afraid i probably aren't up to the task.

thanks

hi,

later on I downloaded the source package and saw that in debian/ there was a

sent a bug in to security.d.o noting the fact, but is probably the wrong

from the post:

===
This is a jabberd2s11 security release.

This release fixes a problem where sending a response stanza before
an auth stanza during a SASL negotiation can cause a c2s segfault.

No other changes were made to the source from the s10 release.

Bug#350344: syslog-ng: still the same stuff in 1.9.9

2006-03-01 Thread simon raven
Package: syslog-ng
Version: 1.9.9-1
Followup-For: Bug #350344

(Follow-up to #350120)

like Subject: syays, it's still the same. I have to ask, did the config
file parsing change that much for 1.6.x - 1.9.x? I noted some changes
between those versions, but there's no examples or doc changes, so to
fix this I am at a complete loss as to do that. Can you at least give
some pointers so I can fix it? I would go so far as filing this as a
*security* issue, since some logs aren't even being written to, never mind
just messages getting routed to the wrong log files.

thanks,
SR/

Bug#352154: zsh: SEGV with zstyle ':completion:*' word true enabled

2006-02-09 Thread Simon Raven
Package: zsh
Version: 4.3.0-dev-2-4
Severity: important

hi,

found a bug in zsh and zsh-beta. when i have the above-mentioned
completion style it just SEGVs. i trimmed it down all the way to just a
few completions, and when i commented that one out, it worked fine.

this *might* be vaguely related to #266031 and #348128.

to test i kept doing rm .zcompdump to make sure nothing was else was making it
crash.

see you

Bug#350120: syslog-ng: certain facilities are completely ignored in the conf; goes into syslog as a result

2006-01-27 Thread simon raven
Package: syslog-ng
Version: 1.9.8.1
Severity: important

the same conf was running fine in the previous version in sid. i've
restarted several of the daemons since and syslog-ng ignores some of my
facilities that i set (all the local* ones, and auth* is ignored;
probably others).

i've looked at the conf over and over and everything is the same as the
distributed one except for my additions.

Bug#348132: pure-ftpd-ldap: userPassword LDAP attribute bug: onlt {CRYPT} is recognised

2006-01-14 Thread simon raven
Package: pure-ftpd-ldap
Version: 1.0.19-7
Severity: important

hi,

whenever i add a new ldap-based user, i have to use {CRYPT} since using
{SSHA} or other stronger hashes make it so that the daemon cannot read the
attribute, and therefore login fails, no matter what i do. i change the
hash to {CRYPT} and login works.

this is rather serious, and i consider it a security hole, but i've set
it to 'important' since i'm using homebrew OpenLDAP for a while now
(built from .debs) and maybe pure-ftpd needs some code tweaks.

oh, curious as to when the new version will be in?

thanks,

Bug#345455: conflicts with nvidia-glx (non-free) forces user to set xserver-xorg on hold, or uninstall it

2005-12-31 Thread Simon Raven
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: normal

it may not seem like a bug at first, but here's why i'm filing it.

6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 conflicts with nvidia-glx = 1.0.7174-4. which will force
me to do one of a few things.
1) remove xserver-xorg
2) remove nvidia-glx
3) install newer nvidia-glx, but is pointless because i do not have a
new video card, which is why nvidia-glx is on hole in the first place
4) use nv, which is slow and doesn't do 3d accel, and AFAIK doesn't do
2d accel either
5) put xserver-xorg on hold, ganing nothing either

right now, my best option - from my POV - is to keep xserver-xorg at its
current version, keep nvidia-glx on hold too, and either wait on nvidia
to actually support their crap, or suffer through with nv - in the long
term, and i don't expect nvidia to do anything about their older h/w,
them being a corporation and all i'd expect more results from the nv
devs to come through eventually, than expect nvidia to do anything. the
former is far more likely. i'd much rather use nv than nvidia, but nv
doesn't have the accel AFAIK, like i said.

some of us can't afford to upgrade upgrade upgrade like they want us
to do, so we can buy more of their crap. hey, maybe we don't want to,
either ;).

anyway, i don't expect anyone to actually give a flying f**k about this.

cheers, and thanks for some good s/w.

sr/

Bug#344491: cyrus-sasl2: new upstream version

2005-12-22 Thread simon raven
Package: cyrus-sasl2
Severity: normal

hi,

http://ftp.andrew.cmu.edu/pub/cyrus-mail/cyrus-sasl-2.1.21.tar.gz

hopefully they fixed some of the bugs in the BTS, too. some of them look
like they should be sent upstream (IMNewbieO).

Bug#342506: bashisms in /usr/lib/stardata-common/starplot

2005-12-07 Thread simon raven
Package: stardata-common
Version: 0.4
Severity: normal

/usr/lib/stardata-common/starplot contains several '==' which is a
bashism. as you can see below, my /bin/sh is symlinked to /bin/dash,
making the script implode instead of running. a simple s/==/=/g fixes
it.

Bug#332863: SEGV on connect to sshd

I'll close this for now, then. If you can identify which modules are
problematic for you and let us know, that would be useful.

sure, go ahead, make my day ;p. but seriously, doesn't openssl 0.9.8x have
versioned symbols now? not sure exactly what that means, except my suspicion
that the symbols present in the library(ies) have versions, hence an indicator
on how to treat it, for instance, building things against it (AIUI).

i suspect it'd be pam_ldap and pam_heimdal, if anything. i found that on
openldap 2.2.26, built against openssl 0.9.7x, the kerby stuff fails to work
properly when i do a 'ldapwhoami', but with say oldap 2.3.7+patches (fixes for
mem leaks, rootdn grokking for cn=config/back-config, and other ones), it
works fine.

i know part of what i'm doing is unsupported, but i suppose doing this also
helps to find bugs in things.

Bug#334505: (u)xterm crashes if started during session start, runs ok if session opened for several minutes

2005-10-18 Thread Simon Raven
Package: xterm
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-9
Severity: normal

hi,

ok. whenever i have an xterm started either via a session manager,
like gnome-session, or startkde, or xfce4-session, or if i start one via
my .xsession file, it crashes with:

xterm: warning, error event received:
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 77 (X_ImageText16)
Serial number of failed request: 190
Current serial number in output stream: 218
zsh: 25545 exit 83uxterm

and will continue to do this as long as it's in memory somewhere. but,
if the x server has been running for a while (e.g., reading a whole
bunch of x bugs ;) it behaves normally, and starts up as if nothing's
wrong. this behaviour is repeatable.

machine runs sid, updated daily
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 7
model name : Pentium III (Katmai)

running nVidia Corporation NV5 [RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro] (rev 15) as main
video (AGPx2), and a trident TGUI 9660/938x/968x (rev d3) on a PCI slot,
using 'nvidia' non-free driver (eew).

i assume it's because the full colour map is in the xserver, thus
(u)xterm can start normally (wild guess, and probably wrong).

hi,

i'm building the packages with debug on (i think it's done with
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=debug,nostrip,noopt
export DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS

right? well, anyway, that's what i stuck in debian/rules, hopefully i got it
right. then i'll run gdb on that sshd binary, and see what we get. i tried
running gdb on a running sshd -ddd at vorlon's suggestion, but didn't get
much out of it.

it must be said that i use 'port 636' and 'uri ldapi:/// ' in my conf.

Bug#328048: libapache2-mod-perl2: mod_perl makes apache2 segv

2005-09-13 Thread simon raven
Package: libapache2-mod-perl2
Version: 2.0.1-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

hi,

mod_perl enabled makes apache2 puke with a SIGSEGV; seems to be related
to the perl 5.8 update that happened today. before, it was working fine.
the straces aren't very helpful except for pointing out where it fails.

last few lines of the last strace:

command:
 env -i LANG=C PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin strace -Ff -o
/tmp/strace_apache2 /usr/sbin/apache2ctl startssl

just like the apache2 init script sets it as, except for the strace
addition.

thanks

Bug#219974: gpm doesn't copy text properly, and paste fails due to this

2005-09-10 Thread simon raven
Package: gpm
Version: 1.19.6-21
Followup-For: Bug #219974

hi,

machine is a g3 upgraded power tower pro (mac clone), running 2.6.13
(home brew), with framebuffer enabled, on an old ati mach64 card.

for some strange reason, ever since the last (?; could be the one
previous) revision of gpm it doesn't copy things very well, and thus i
can't paste what i've selected. it fails without fail.

what i do is what i've always done: select with left mouse button, and
paste with middle, and i always get some random crap instead of what i
selected.

this happens when i have a console open, trying to paste into a vim
window or other thing.
it doesn't do this when i'm doing it from/to a screen window. this works
fine.

not only doesn't it get read, even modifying the Makefile.defs to have
'gcc-3.3' instead of 'gcc' doesn't seem to matter, and the build goes on
to use the debian-set gcc default (here being 4.0). it should read this
variable, as the other 2 modules i built with make-kpkg (fuse and shfs)
both read it and set it correctly and the 'vermagic=' gets set properly,
too.

Bug#323182: debian-installer: boot.img for sarge doesn't, on PPC

2005-08-15 Thread Simon Raven
Package: debian-installer
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

boot.img for sarge on powerpc doesn't boot, no matter what i do, what
date i get it from (there's a 20041118/ dir on the site, tried those,
doesn't want to boot either). i've tried both 2.4 and 2.6 floppies, any
machine i stick it in spits it back out without any warning and pops up
a floppy picture with a big X in it. i've tried it with several
downloads and several floppies, all known good, and they just don't
boot, no matter what i do. the bootx option is not possible at this
point in time as i have no bin to store the drive with mock os on it
anywhere, and i shouldn't have to do this on a known otherwise working
machine with sarge on it, with a dead battery, and the other a sid install,
been running since late 2002 (potato-woody).

i'm trying to rescue these 2 ppc oldworld macs, and without a working boot.img,
i cannot rescue them at all.

Bug#323032: libc6: GLIBC_PRIVATE errors

zsh: 8307 exit 127 fakeroot debian/rules binary

this is a follow-up to 321561 and 321712. if i allow the upgrade to
happen, i can't even run make, or perl, or crond, or anything at all in
fact. please fix this.

when i run strings on the library (libc6 so file) i see the GLIBC_PRIVATE
string.
isn't this supposed to work, like the previous libc6 major change (like
the woody-sarge one)? perl pukes in such a way that the locale gets all
confused, and cannot load properly, and the locales package install
fails, if libc6 2.3.5 is installed.

i haven't been able to upgrade for days and days, and this worries me
because there are security issues involved here.

i would also like a clarification on what's going on, being in the dark
isn't helping anything, either.
