driver requires the ability to make real-mode BIOS calls. This can neverwork. I'd suggest just closing this.Hi,IMHO, I would close this bug ticket too.The problem appeared to me because I installed the i386 userland, and then switched from the default kernel package to its amd64 flavor.
Nevertheless, it could not happen with current testing and unstable repositories, as kernel-image-*-amd64-* packages are no more available in the i386 port of Debian : the amd64 kernel are only found in the amd64 port repository*.
Best Regards,David.* with the exception of Debian Stable, which provides a amd64 build of linux kernel in the i386 repository. I think it is way to late to change anything about it.

ia32 builds of Xorg use vm86 for real-mode BIOS calls. 64-bit kernels
don't support the vm86 syscall, even with 32-bit userland. The Vesa
driver requires the ability to make real-mode BIOS calls. This can never
work. I'd suggest just closing this.

Bug#303640: kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8: Xfree86 fails to find a VESA chipset

2005-04-11 Thread David Robin
Hi,

just tried. No other package depends on "read-edid", so I removed it,
and booted on the installed "2.6.8-10.amd64-k8" kernel.
=> The behaviour is just the same, sorry. The log files appears to be
unchanged :
- the same "V_BIOS checksum error" in XFree86.0.log,
- the same message about vm86 and the 64bit mode, in dmesg's output.

Ultimately, I may wish to install the sid kernel, should I ?

Regards,
David

Bug#303640: kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8: Xfree86 fails to find a VESA chipset

2005-04-10 Thread David Robin
Hi Kurt,

Indeed, I installed the i386 binaries of Debian (from
netinst-i386.iso), and then tried to use a kernel specific to my
architecture.
This is not amd64, neither amd64-pure.

I will try to remove read-edid, if there isn't strong dependencies on
this package.

Regards,
David

I'm assuming that this is using the amd64 kernel with a i386
userland?

I know that read-edid is using vm86. Could you please try
removing that package and try again?

please send in:
* dmesg of 2.6.8-10-amd64-k8 after boot and it's lsmod
* dmesg of 2.6.8-2-386 after boot and it's lsmod
* lspci -vv of your box

Bug#303640: kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8: Xfree86 fails to find a VESA chipset

2005-04-07 Thread David Robin
Subject: kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8: Xfree86 fails to find a VESA chipset
Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8
Version: 2.6.8-11
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Hi,

I just installed Debian testing on a new Athlon64/nForce4 machine.
This machine boots correctly with the default i386 (2.6.8-2) kernel installed by
d-i, and XFree86 correctly connects to a VESA chip.

Nevertheless, if I boot on the 2.6.8-10-amd64-k8 kernel, then XFree86
can not find a VESA interface anymore, and thus fails to provide the
graphic mode. - /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 was not changed -

The graphic chipset is a GeForce 6600GT, integrated on the Gigabyte NX6600
128MB Vivo board.

The complete /var/log/XFree86.0.log file is sent as an attachment.

Regards,
David.
