Aha..! Well, I never read what Recommends means, I have just trusted
apt-get as usual. (I trusted that it would give me any dependency I need
to run the packages I wanted to install.)

I filed bugs against dselect and synaptic already because they didn't
honor recommends in the default configuration on installs or upgrades.

How can I configure it to install Recommends: packages automatically?

I used apt-get in this case, but I don't remember ever installing
alsa-base specifically.
Still, I wouldn't expect missing functionality like this (which seems
quite basic), when not installing a Recommends: package. But then again,
I'm not sure how it can be fixed if you can't let it depend on it.

FYI, apt-get is not meant to be an end-user / day-to-day package
manager, but I do agree that it is a bug in apt-get.

I think you misunderstood the importance of Recommends:
Recommends

This declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency.

The Recommends field should list packages that would be found
together with this one in all but unusual installations.

 (Debian Policy 7.2)

I filed bugs against dselect and synaptic already because they didn't
honor recommends in the default configuration on installs or upgrades.

alsa-base "Recommends" alsa-utils, which is a quite strong dependency,
probably your package manager didn't respect it. Do you use synpatic,
 apt-get, or something else?

I didn't have it installed, and indeed, installing it seems to help! Is
there a way I could have known this? If not, I hope there is some
dependency that could fix this problem... or, please make it clearer :)

Thanks for your great support, though!

Do you have alsa-utils installed? It's the package responsible for
 saving the volume level.

Ok, I believe it's a slightly different bug as the one reported, so I'm
marking it as yours and reopening.

You did reconfigure the GStreamer sink to be ALSA?

Yes, see the other communication we had. The volume-control didn't work
without it.

Hello,

If you ask me, this bug can be reopened, because I have exactly this
problem: since I installed kernel 2.6.15 (and thus moved to ALSA), the
volume is always muted when I log in. Als all volumes of the other
subdevices (PCM, etc.) are muted and set to 0 volume. I'd rather have it
remember the previous values!
