Bug#405256: Re #405256: apt-listbugs error

2007-01-02 Thread Ross Boylan
I got somewhat different error messages after my initial report, and am
getting the same messages (I think) on a different system:
Reading package status... Done
Retrieving bug reports... 0% W: syntax error
Error retrieving bug reports
Retry downloading bug information?[Y/n]?
 W: syntax error
Error retrieving bug reports

The preceding was with the unstable apt-listbugs 0.0.71 running within
apt-get on a 2.6 kernel. My original report was with the testing
version running within aptitude on a 2.4 kernel.

Are you saying my original report was a dupe, or just the later one
(appearing below). The original report had a different error message.

Second, I gather from that bug report that the ultimate cause of the
problem was that the bugs server had a problem. Apparently that has
been fixed.

Third, I agree with the 405928 submitter that it would be good if
apt-listbugs failed in a more controlled, informative way in such
situations.

Finally, do you still want the extra debugging output? If so, from
which system, the one with the original error or the one with the
error reported below?

Thanks.

Give me an example of what you think is more informative version of
the following and I'll consider :

getting the same messages (I think) on a different system:
Reading package status... Done
Retrieving bug reports... 0% W: syntax error
Error retrieving bug reports
Retry downloading bug information?[Y/n]?
 W: syntax error
Error retrieving bug reports

Your second sympton is a dupe of 405298.

If you can reproduce the original error, it would help.
Otherwise I'll be closing this bug.

Maybe just delete the "W: syntax error".
What exactly is this a symptom of?

that's one of the key messages from ruby, required for reasonable debugging
when the user
doesn't give any debugging output.

The message looks as if it's indicating an invalid statement in the
program. If it is, it would be good to fix the statement. If it's
not, it would be good to explain it, or at least indicate that it is a
developer-level message.

The message is now changed so that it is more clear about what the
message is about; however the original message is very unclear indeed.

It's probably the string defined in
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/xml/dom2/domexception.rb
