Well, I just realized I have the problem on my work system:
$ info -w octave
*manpages*
but
$ info -f /usr/share/info/octave.info.gz
works as expected, so the file is there.
If anyone has a pointer at hand as to when info uses the manpages, I
would appreciate that.
Okay, now I'm puzzled; starting konqueror and using its
info://octave
syntax, the correct file is displayed. Also,
$tkinfo octave
works.
Is it possible that the command-line info browser doesn't like the
symlinks in /etc/alternatives/ ?
