Okay, now I'm  puzzled; starting konqueror and using its 
        info://octave
syntax, the correct file is displayed. Also, 
        $tkinfo octave 
works. 

Is it possible that the command-line info browser doesn't like the
symlinks in /etc/alternatives/ ?
