apt-listchanges has been updated a fair bit since 2008, can you test to
see if this issue still occurs on your system with your config?

By window I meant the xterm-pager which in my case is gnome-terminal.
So what happens is one window of gnome-terminal which has some
changelog listed, when the new comes it flashes for a sec. and the
only way to see it properly is to say n to go ahead. Read whatever
changelog window is open, after that is done then only I can do the
whole thing again then get apt-listchanges to show the changes. At
any one time xterm-pager can only show one window not more.

Well, apt-listchanges tries to start a new window each time, and reuse
them not. So I don't understand how this is an apt-listchanges bug.

Btw this also happens when there are huge number of changelogs then
only one pager window is opened and it does not have full content as
should be .

Hi Perre,

Well, apt-listchanges tries to start a new window each time, and reuse
them not. So I don't understand how this is an apt-listchanges bug.

thank you for getting back again and being so patient. So are you
saying its a gnome-terminal issue or what? In case, yes could you
tell/recommend me what I should put up where I have put
frontend=xterm-pager so I am able to do my thing. Looking forward to
suggestions on the same. Even if it means changing my xterm-pager to
something which works the way I want it.

If there is something specific you want me to try please lemme know,
would do the same but you would have to be explicit as I'm just a baby
as far as debian/ubuntu is concerned.

Hi Pierre,
I know that there is a command called less which has invocation like

ls -l /var/log/ |less

which allows me to go back and forth and see the listing but dunno
what do you mean by less pager (no idea)

If you mean if I tried to scroll the window with the changelogs to see
if there are more then yes. Sorry for all the trouble.

it's what apt-listchanges uses to show the changelogs inside your

In that case the answer to your original question would be yes, I
tried to scroll the less pager but it wouldn't show. This is
reproducible if you are upgrading or updating substantial amount of
packages. I have seen this happen quite a few times.

Bug#502172: apt-listchanges doesn't work if an existing apt-listchanges window is open

2008-10-16 Thread shirish
Hi Pierre,
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. The issue is like this.
I do an upgrade and apt-listchanges shows me a changelog of one or
more packages. It asks me if its ok to proceed and I answer in the
positive. The apt-get/aptitude cycle is complete although the terminal
window which shows the changelog is still open.

I do another cycle of apt-get or aptitude upgrade and it again tries
to show me the changelog

Now somehow because the earlierwindow is already there which has
changelogs of the last cycle, (use-case perhaps I'm still reading it
or forgot to close it or didn't read it whichever way) it skips
showing me the changelog. Ideally it should show/spawn another window
(atleast IMHO) lemme know what do you think?

I still don't get which window you're talking about. What is your
apt-listchange configuration ?

I don't understand what you're talking about. Especially since you
cannot have two apt-get running at the same time. Please elaborate.
