The version of debian-goodies would have been more interesting.

Given the versions above, you seem to be using Debian 8 Jessie.

As shown on
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/version.cgi?found=debian-goodies%2F0.63;collapse=1;fixed=debian-goodies%2F0.64;package=debian-goodies;absolute=0;info=1
(and on https://bugs.debian.org/748055 in the top right corner) that
issue hasn't been fixed in Debian 8 Jessie aka "stable" (yet). It's
only fixed in Debian Testing, so it can't be "back" in Stable.

Bug#748055: debian-goodies: checkrestart false positive for MySQL

2014-06-15 Thread Matthew Gabeler-Lee
Package: debian-goodies
Version: 0.63
Followup-For: Bug #748055

I have this problem too. The source is that checkrestart sees "/[aio]" from
lsof, and concludes that is a "problem".

Key output from checkrestart -v:

Found 3 processes using old versions of upgraded files
(2 distinct programs)
Process /usr/sbin/mysqld (PID: 7048)
List of deleted files in use:
/[aio]

This is the only deleted file from mysqld that checkrestart -v reports on.

I'm running $ apt-show-versions -p mysql-server-5.5
mysql-server-5.5:amd64/testing 5.5.37-1 uptodate

Bug#748055: debian-goodies: checkrestart false positive for MySQL

2014-05-15 Thread Etienne Levesque Guitard
Em, so shortly after I posted this bug, I had the same issue in wheezy,
and since you couldn't reproduce the issue and I did not remember facing
that same issue before on Debian 7, something rang a bell.

It looks like the problem is due to a kernel change by the host on which
my Debian VM runs. Here's the 'uname -a' for a Linode wheezy VM:

Linux li652-239 3.14.4-x86_64-linode40 #1 SMP Tue May 13 12:25:05 EDT
2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And the one with the stock Debian kernel on the same VM:
(As reported after following:
https://library.linode.com/custom-instances/pv-grub-howto)

Linux (none) 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.57-3+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Here is the output of 'checkrestart -v' with the Linode kernel:

Found 1 processes using old versions of upgraded files
(1 distinct program)
Process /usr/sbin/mysqld (PID: 7268)
List of deleted files in use:
/[aio] ((Etienne: This line is repeated 204 times))

Running:['dpkg-query', '--search', '/usr/sbin/mysqld']
Reading line: mysql-server-core-5.5: /usr/sbin/mysqld

(1 distinct packages)
These processes do not seem to have an associated init script to restart them:
mysql-server-core-5.5:
7268/usr/sbin/mysqld

And the output of 'checkrestart -v' with the stock kernel on the same VM:

Found 0 processes using old versions of upgraded files

So it looks like it's a problem with the Linode kernel,
namely 3.14.4-x86_64-linode40.

However, although only partially related, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
throws the exact same message with MySQL 5.5 with either
Linode's kernel, the stock kernel, or a VMware-based VM,
so I'm thinking this may be an issue with the version
of the kernel, which is even stranger, because you tested
on sid, which is 3.14 and didn't get the issue, Linode is 3.14,
and both other Ubuntu builds I tested are 3.13.

Etienne

In order to diagnose this issue, please send, attached, the output of
'checkrestart -v'

Please note that I'm not able to reproduce this issue using sid which uses
the same version (debian-goodies version 0.63). I just followed the same
steps you indicated and could not get any false positives with checkrestart.

I'm consequently marking this as 'notreproducible'. If I get more comments
from other users to this bug, duplicating the issue, I will remove that flag.

Thanks,

Javier

Bug#748055: debian-goodies: checkrestart false positive for MySQL

2014-05-13 Thread Etienne Levesque Guitard
Package: debian-goodies
Version: 0.63
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The checkrestart utility in debian-goodies will falsly report MySQL as
needing a restart starting with jessie. The same happens in Ubuntu 14.04,
presumably because it is based on Debian testing.

-- How to reproduce --

Upgrade to Debian testing / jessie
Install mysql-server, mysql-client and debian-goodies
Run checkrestart
Restart MySQL
Run checkrestart

checkrestart will keep reporting on MySQL needing a restart
for as long as MySQL is running.

-- Expected behaviour --

checkrestart should report on MySQL needing a restart
only if it really does.
