2007-05-20 Thread Eric Valette
Package: iceweasel
Version: 2.0.0.3-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Since yesterday, after libgtk2.0-0 update, mozillakeep crashing on certain

of library and packages it depends and checked in my /Var/cache/apt/archives to
see the last I updated.

This includes libxt6 and libgtk2.0.

Try for example the follwing page : http://fabforce.net/dbdesigner4/

But I happens on 1/3 pages...

Bug#480534: installing 0.8-1 on amd64 did break something: reinstalling 0.7-2 does not make it work while it previously did

2008-05-11 Thread Eric Valette
So after testing everything was fine on my ia32 laptop, I tried to debug
a bit more on amd64 arch.

I first tried to reproduce the original problem (causing crash on
icedove after upgrade) So I purged the 0.8 version, resintalled the
previously working 0.7-2 version.

Surprise, the extension was not seen/loaded. Suspected my account.
Created a brand new one, and run icedove. It found only the openpgp
extension as it did on my own account.

= help. I'm lost

Hi alexander. Thanks for your quick tentative fix. Unfortunately, It
still does not work on my amd64 system. I do not know how to reopen the
bug and do not want to create a new one. 480534-reopen?

If I can send you any file you would like to have. As I created a
temporary account to test in a sane environment, it is not likeky to be
in my profile files.

I noticed an linux-gnu_x86_64-gcc3 as platform but have nothing like
 gcc-3* installed.

Removing the target architecture line from the iceowl-extension
install.rdf indeed fixes the problem. I suspect, the line may be worth
but then either the tools that generates it is wrong or the way icedove
later checks its validity is wrong.

Please try to build the iceowl source package and see if the result is
better when built on your own system.

 Thanks,

Planned to do this anyway because I need to incorporate the fixes

Will try to see what I need to compile this. If you have any hint...

Bug#489349: installing kde4 will remove digikam because of dependencies on libkipi0 and kipi-plugins

2008-07-06 Thread Eric Valette
Mark Purcell wrote:

The current intention is to use experimental for the digikam 0.9.4-rc/beta
packages for KDE3, which is a little different from the rest of experimental
 which is geared towards KDE4. Once digikam 0.9.4 releases[1] - around 13
July then I will be in a position to package digikam/kde4.

I have just this weekend started working on the digikam/kde4 package, in
svn.debian.org. However it is still not recommended for production use, so
won't be releasing early, as based on the release plan 0.10.0 beta 1 doesn't
release until 6 July anyway, so we aren't missing out.

Thanks for the prompt answer. I know you are working on it on you know
some user would like to have it even when helping debugging kde4. It is
a still little bit rought at the moment but useable.

So I do not konw if the bug is in the hplip python code or kde code but
it is annoying.

Try stopping any existing applet and running:
 $ hp-systray --qt4

It works! Thanks.

 Does that fix the problem?
If so, it looks like the best way to fix your problem is to change:

 force_qt4 = False to force_qt4 = True
 at line 63 of /usr/share/hplip/systray.py...

...then keep doing so every upgrade until HPLIP is built against PyQT4.

If this was more than a minor problem I would suggest building HPLIP
against PyQT4, patching the systray.py code, and placing the result in
Experimental where it can be fetched by anyone trying out KDE4.

I consider it minr becase hlpip works, and the icon while located at the
left upper side of the screen is functionnal. Can live with that up to
until kde4 becomes default I hope somewhere at the end of this year...

Thanks for your time and support

Bug#488047: kde-window-manager: trying to put application from kde global application seletion menu on desktop sometimes fails

2008-06-25 Thread Eric Valette
Package: kde-window-manager
Version: 4:4.0.82+svn819867-1
Severity: normal

As the destop icons have disapppeared when installing kde4, I've tried to
put them back at their place. I managed to do it with iceweasel but curiously
not with icedove. They both appear whith their correct icons and start correctly
when lauched from K-applications-networking-SelectedApp.

Filezilla works, amarok does not, iceweasel works icedove does not??? Did not
manage to find a pattern to explain this.

When it does not work, It places something on the desktop, but instead f the
normal icon it get the gear
symbol and when I click on it it satrt kedit whith an error message.

Bug#488277: I have exactly the same problem

2008-06-28 Thread Eric Valette
After updating to the new xserver on my nc6000 HP LAPTOP, the screen
connected on the docking station that can only do 1280x1024 is forced at
the flat panel resolution that is actually 1400x1050 meaning I see only
part of the screen on my external LCD monitor. If I force to change the
resolution to 1280x1024 using xrandr, it just kill the external display.
Restoring the initial 1400x1050 does not restore the video on the
external dipslay. To restore it I have to call xrandr --auto and then Im
back to 1400x1050.

Of course, I did not change my xorg.conf at the beginning. Googling a
little bit I have added the new Randr 1.2 option to attach a specific
monitor to a specific video output (external LCD-VGA-0, Flat Panel to
LDVS). They are correctly associated now, but it did not change the
behavior.

So far the only trick I have found to support the external screen is to
explicitly shut down the flat panel using xrandr and then to change the
resolution manually to 1280x1024. I have put a docked script in my ~/bin
that automates it.

Looking at the Xorg.0.log, I have no error either. Will post my
xorg.conf and my Xorg.0.log monday when I'll be back to work.

the 1400x1050 mode is added from the 'Modes' line in your xorg.conf,
because the VGA-0 output doesn't have a PreferredMode configured. I'm
not sure how to both fix this and still take the 'Modes' into account.
In any case this should be easy to work around in your config file.

I'm not sure to understand: the screen mode for the external display
explicitly says 1280x1024. The screen mode that says 1400x1050 is for
the laptop panel. Adding or removing the virtual value does not chnage
anything. Do you suggest totally removing the modes?

After updating to the new xserver on my nc6000 HP LAPTOP, the screen

the flat panel resolution that is actually 1400x1050 meaning I see only
part of the screen on my external LCD monitor. If I force to change the
resolution to 1280x1024 using xrandr, it just kill the external display.
Restoring the initial 1400x1050 does not restore the video on the
external dipslay. To restore it I have to call xrandr --auto and then Im
 back to 1400x1050.

Make sure you use the xrandr 1.2 interface, using the old xrandr 1.0
interface (xrandr -s) will not work correctly as it has no concept of
 multiple heads.
 xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024
 or
 xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x1024

If you look at my post you will see that i4m using the new one

Of course, I did not change my xorg.conf at the beginning. Googling a
little bit I have added the new Randr 1.2 option to attach a specific
monitor to a specific video output (external LCD-VGA-0, Flat Panel to
LDVS). They are correctly associated now, but it did not change the
 behavior.

The modes line from your config is part of the problem, the modes in
that line will get added as preferred modes to every output in the new
xserver. Try removing the 1400x1050 mode from the modes lines in the
 screens section of your config.

I have associated the screen and the output. So why is it added to every
output then?

Thanks for your support anyway!

Bug#488277: I have exactly the same problem

2008-07-01 Thread Eric Valette

Alex, Julien

First thanks for your help.

The modes in your screen section apply to all outputs. The ones in
your monitor sections only apply to the specific monitor in question.

I removed the mode lines from the screen sections. I did not add them
back to the monitor section as they are correctly probed by the driver.

Result is no change. The display on the external lcd is only a portion
of the whole 1400x1050 resolution. Explicitly setting the resolution of
the LCD, does not change anything. I still have to resort to the script
docked to have a correct display.

If you have any other suggestion, please tell me I will give it a try.

NB: I would prefer to have a single configuration file for both config.
Using xrandr or a script like today is ok. With kde4, krandrtray will
enable to to this graphically.

Alex Deucher wrote:

what modes do you want on each head? the native modes of each head
are different. you can either have both heads at 1280x1024 or some
other resolution common to both heads or have them at different modes.

The mode is one thing, the virtual size of the desktop is another. The
portion of the virtual size you see on your smallest resolution monitor
is a third thing.

Here, *if I understand correctly*, the virtual size is the biggest one
so 1400x1050. Therefore, on the external lcd screen, when cloned, I see
only part (1280x1024) exactly of the 1400x1050 display or is it one of
the ratio of 1280/1400 or 1024/1050. That is what annoys me because by
default, it crop the kde taskar (automatic hide) or the top of the
windows. Both case are annoying. In previous version it happened to but
a least moving the mouse I could access all the part of the full virtual
screen. Here I can no more but many is it due to something else.

So my question is is it normal to see only portion of the virtual
screen? I do not think so but maybe it is because I have no clue about
possible automatic scaling between heads. Sure 1400/1050 and 1280/1024
ratio differ and this is not pure scaling...

What I would like is to do is detecting the pc is docked and by default
call my script. I guess I can automate it using xrandr so that when x is
started, if there is a VGA monior I run my docked script which is
perfectly fine.

Then if I put something like

Option PreferredMode 1280x1024_60.00 on my LVDS panel, then I will have
to use xrandr to swicth manually when undocking.

If you laptop produces acpi dock events, you can run an script with
xrandr when the event comes in.

It does not but maybe opening the lid does as closing it call xlock.
Will check.

Side question: why are the xrandr displayed mode wrong ?(no 1600 x1024

 (see my previous Xorg.0.log)

The laptop panel only one mode, it's native one: 1400x1050. We add
the other smaller modes via the panel scaler to enable uses to use
 non-native modes on their panels.

OK. What I do not understand is why the 1280x1024 mode disappear i the
output when it appears when undocked?

As for the VGA port, the xserver
adds the common server modes that fit into the sync ranges provided by
the edid ffrom your monitor. I'd argue that we should only add the
modes in the edid, but CRT uses tend to like to use various other
 strange modes.

Again thanks for your time and patience educating the mass ;-)

 On the smaller monitor, yes.

This means that for many laptop owner in medium sized companies, where
external LCD are bigger but with lower resolution the default behavior
(meaning without preferred mode settings) is barelly unacceptable and
there is no way to have a single xorg.conf file that work correctly for
docked and undocked case (I can limit the LVDS resolution by default in
xorg.conf but will then have to manually change it when undocking or use
acpi events).

As I can use xrandr to dynamically reprogram things without restarting
X, this is acceptable but is a change compared to previous behavior.

Again thanks for your time and patience.

Sorry. We are too busy with closing all your non-bugs.

You bloody arrogant idiot! No being able to login once the automtic
screen saver start and asks for a password is not a bug? You have to
become root and kill the process. Not really safe in a business environment!

And you by the way missed to tell what binary you meant to be setuid root.

For someone as intelligent as you are, it should be obvious.

But anyways, no matter which binary it is, documenting it in a README file
that you might want to add setuid root (with dpkg-statoverride) to that
specific file if you use NIS will be the fix.

Fair enough. But someone else may reopen the bug then. Automating nis
discovery would be more wyse and evident for you superman ;-)

As it works without problems in non-nis-environments, there is no reason to
make it setuid root for all users.

I disagree. Its is obvious that you have no clue of what using linux in
a corporate environment means.

In addition, you should probably read kcheckpass man page before saying
it was not intended to be setuid root:

KCheckPass is KDE's authentication program. It is meant to be used by
any software in need of user authentication, most notably screensavers.

It enhances security be the following means:

- It's only a small program, which is hopefully simple
enough to allow it to be SUID root. Setting it to SUID root is
necessary on Shadow Password systems.

- No other program in need of user authentication, must be
SUID root.

- It provides a single implementation to check passwords. So
one only must take a closer look at KCheckPass to ensure password
security. It's much easier for programs using KCheckPass to preserve
security.

FWIW, this should be fixable with a simple rebuild, after editing the
contents of debian/ to point to /usr instead of /usr/X11R6/. However, there
are two issues standing in the way of a simple rebuild:

- xutils-dev is currently broken; bug #362886, should be fixed tomorrow
- xprint itself fails to build against Xorg 7.0 due to bug #360446; I just
talked to the maintainer, and he says he's preparing a new upstream
version of xprint. At that point, it probably doesn't need xutils-dev
  anyway.

Thanks for the info. I can wait anyway. It is just because the
transition has been quite painfull that I record the problem I hit (if
not alreday reported).

BTW = I have been hunting font cache problem a lot on two installations.
I had to manually link /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 to their
equivaalent in /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1 whithout managing to find what
cache or config file was containing the wrong path. It happens on all my
personnal computers (desktop, laptop).

second item of the menu (#284096) has suddently vanished while doing an
upgrade of _apparently_ unrelated libraries. I recorded it in bug
(#284096) But there is still some bugs happening when doing this, as
suddenly, after selectiong the second item on menu, some color for text
on the master slide permanently change on display (not the document
itself because if I close and relaod color is restored ???

The single word color selection (#289715) is still broken for me. I
suggest you insist on someone still having the bug. I would be glad to
downgrade a library to reproduce it but I have no clue of what changed
to make the bug disappear.

Annoying because as stated a bug that disappear may reappear. For me it
something like a wrong pointer that corrupt something unrelated that
depend on libraries size for final placement...

Anyway I would suggest to not merge the two bugs as one is a crash and
another is a wrong behavior.

Bug#284096: Could you check the bug of single word color modification

2005-01-25 Thread Eric Valette
Chris,
I would also like to thank you for taking the time for chasing this bug.
Indeed it seems finally to have something with printing as initially
suggested (or cups server support at least). Could you see if you can
reproduce also the bug #289715 in the same non working condition.

I have indeed added the KDE look and feel package in the mean time which
explains why the bug did disappear.

Bug#365988: Please reopen the KDM bug : your proposed fix to restore Xsession does not make KDM work again

2006-05-04 Thread Eric Valette

Steve,

I tried your trick (--force_confmiss) on my totally broken unstable. It
indeed added the /etc/X11/Xsession file back again, I managed to do
startx as root. Not as a normal user. No trace no nothing. X starts and
then fails. It is not only KDE : I changed my own xsession to fvwm
without any more luck.

= breakage is more important than just the missing files

OOps : while hunting the bug I found that the Xsession was comming from
x11-common and restored it manually by doing dpkg -x x11-common /tmp
which corrupted /tmp 777 permission = my fault.

If I understand correctly, you're saying that this problem occurs only when
using your local kernel which does not have PCMCIA enabled. If it works
with the official Debian kernel packages, then there's no reason this should
 be grave.

 Correct me if I've misunderstood.

How many people use src packages with the official Debian kernel binary
packages where the binary is available?

Problem is that nothing can be said to prevend generation of PCMIA
related modules...

 Hi,

you can choose what modules are built changing the
 modules/linux-wlan-ng-source/debian/config-for-lwng file.

if you want only USB modules change the file like this...

 PRISM2_PCMCIA=n
 PRISM2_PLX=n

 PRISM2_USB=$BUILD_MODULES

Please test this solution and reply the results.

Cannot do that via the modules assistant package. Beside, the make config from
the original package ask this interactively but this is hidded by the debian
way of building.

= even if it works it is not a valid option for non technical user.

See my previous reply. Chnaging only the values in

Bug#372856: krandrtray does correctly switch resolution on my setup

2006-06-12 Thread Eric Valette
Package: kcontrol
Version: 4:3.5.3-2
Severity: normal

I have a dual-head setup with with an ATI board using the following radeon
driver options:

   Option MergedFB true
Option DynamicClocks true
Option CRT2Position clone
Option MetaModes 1280x1024 1400x1050-1280x1024

krandrtray display correctly the two modes (1400x1050 and 1280x1024) but
when clicking on the desired resolution, it does not switch it correctly.
Using xrandr I get

 SZ:Pixels Physical Refresh
*0 1280 x 1024 ( 342mm x 272mm ) *-19557
 1 1400 x 1050 ( 342mm x 272mm ) -19557
Current rotation - normal
Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal
Reflections possible - none

And using xrandr -S 0/1 does switch the mode as expected. So I guess this
is a bug in krandrtray.

Bug#369140: kdelibs-bin: make_driver_db_cups is not working anymore

2006-05-27 Thread Eric Valette
Package: kdelibs-bin
Version: 4:3.5.2-2+b1
Severity: important

As printing via cup was no more functionnal, I tried to delete my default
printer and recreate it using kde print manager. I switched to
administrator mode and each time I tried to change the driver or recreate it,
I got several error messages related to unability to create the driver
database and mentionning make_driver_db_cups.

It may be an incompatibility between the executable and the cup library
but anyway it does no work and my system and I'm currently unable to
print anything.

gcc-3.4 is the last version providing g77. If you do want to
coordinate the transition of changing the build dependencies from g77
to gfortran, please go ahead. It's however a nontrivial task.

I assume is is not more difficult than changing from gcc-3 to gcc-4. But
of course fortran is quite uncommon nowadays...

Close the bug for now. I keep your mail. If I manage to reproduce a

With plain. But as said the path is already transformed to UTF8 in the

The 0.8 rc1 version has just been delivered. It seems to correctly handle
chnage in the meeting (date, time, ...). I would really beta test it to
make sure it works with ootlook 2003 but cannot as xpi are not compatible
as usual.

Plus, 0.7 took way to much to my personnal taste to find a way into debian
after release (ok its the open source development model I know;-))

The patch does not look good to me. What if locale is not UTF8? Anyway, I'm
not going to do any amarok upload until 1.4.8-2 reaches testing which may
take up to two weeks or even more. It would be great if you somehow could
test if the patch works with non-UTF8 locales.

My locales are not UTF8 but french. This is just that we should do
correct conversion with non latin1 character in song titles title like
éèç that are very common in french songs. Put such a character in a song
title and try to transfer it on a MTP device. UTF8 is usually a much
better alternative than hardcoded latin1. The traget device has no such
locales thing.
