You have reported this problem against a fairly old version of the
debian-installer. Can you reproduce this issue on a more recent
version?

Is this still on-topic now that the debian-installer installs a system

schroot already knows how to do that through the /etc/schroot/setup.d

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Although it would probably be better to have a more local mirror than
ftp.debian.org used, probably by using the country selected by the user

According to a recent mail on LKML [1], this should be fixed in Linux
2.6.22.

The debian-installer has not switched to this new version yet, but
packages for 2.6.22 are available from unstable.

Could you try it and see if the ordering is correct with the newer
kernel? That would be definitely helpful. :)

After reading the I2O FAQ [1] it seems that the second path is only
accessing the first disk instead of the whole RAID array:

What are the various modules for?

  [...]
  I2O Block OSM (i2o_block):
This is the disk driver, which let you access your RAID array, or if
you don't have a RAID array configured to the single disks. You only
have access to the disks through this driver!

  I2O SCSI OSM (i2o_scsi):
This driver let you direct access to the disks. NEVER use this driver
to mount a filesystem or so. If you do so, you could destroy your
data. Only use this driver, to monitor your disks for failure. You
could use the smartmontools to do so.
  [...]

The data for your /boot partition are probably out of sync now. :(

Does /dev/sda1 exists on the system? What error message is printed when
you try to mount it? Is there any strange entry that shows up in kernel
messages (dmesg)?

Hi!

wyrd is currently not built using the --enable-utf8 configure flag,
resulting in encoding issues when ".reminders" is encoded using UTF-8.
Since Etch, Debian uses UTF-8 by default so that's a real issue.

The attached patch adds the configure flag and a new Build-Depends on

Bug#429672: libcairo: shlibs file are broken regarding udeb

2007-06-19 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: libcairo
Version: 1.4.6-1.1
Severity: important

Hi!

libcairo2 and libcairo-directfb2 .shlibs files disagree on which
dependencies should be used for udebs:

  * /var/lib/dpkg/info/libcairo2.shlibs

libcairo 2 libcairo2 (>=1.4.0)
udeb: libcairo 2 libcairo-directfb2-udeb (>=1.4.0)

  * /var/lib/dpkg/info/libcairo-directfb2.shlibs

libcairo 2 libcairo2 (>=1.4.0)
udeb: libcairo 2 libcairo2 (>=1.4.0)

The former looks good, but the later package (which is a dependency of
libgtk-directfb-2.0-dev) results in udebs linked against cairo getting
a wrong Depends on libcairo2.

Loïc Minier have suggested that no libcairo2 should have no udeb entries
and that libcairo-directfb2 should only gets the udeb entry.

Bug#548309: dropbear: allow more than one public key in initramfs

2009-09-25 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: dropbear
Version: 0.52-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

When dropbear is used for remote unlocking of an encrypted partition, it
currently unconditionnaly overwrite `/root/.ssh/authorized_keys` in the
initrd with `/etc/initramfs-tools/root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub`.

Unfortunately, this prevents to add any other public keys that would
allow access to the initrd environment. Is there any security reasons
being this design?

Otherwise, it would be nice to support an
`/etc/initramfs-tools/root/.ssh/authorized_keys` file in which
`/etc/initramfs-tools/root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub` could be copied during
the package installation.

After encountering the same problem and digging a little more, I came up
with the following one-liner:

--- inkscape-0.46.orig/src/widgets/desktop-widget.cpp
+++ inkscape-0.46/src/widgets/desktop-widget.cpp
@@ -1058,7 +1058,6 @@

The GTK+ configuraton says about gtk_window_reshow_with_initial_size():

Hides window, then reshows it, resetting the default size and position
of the window. Used by GUI builders only.

I think the call can be safely removed as the function is here called
programmatically and, from what I have seen,
gtk_window_set_default_size() is always called before gtk_widget_show(),
thus rendered with the desired size.

After building with this patch, inkscape was not crashing anymore,
neither on startup or by loading another document afterwards.

Best behaviour is probably to fail displaying that the password can't

Bug#542671: vidalia: Should not suggest "update-rc.d -f" only

2009-08-20 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: vidalia
Version: 0.1.15-1
Severity: normal

Hi!

In README.Debian, in order to prevent Tor to start automatically at boot
time, it is suggested to use:
   # update-rc.d -f tor remove

This suggestion is a bad one. When startup links are removed this way,
they will be created again on the next upgrade (or reinstallation) of
the tor package. Thus enabling it again on startup.

Using the "disable" option of "update-rc.d" would probably be a
better suggestion, here.

But maybe it would be more user friendly to either:

 a) Ask (through debconf) about disabling Tor startup links; with
"no" as a default; and do it in the postinst script.
 b) Change tor init script so that it does not start the daemon itself
when a specific setting (maybe in /etc/default/vidalia) is set.
This setting value could be asked through debconf as well.

I am unsure about how policy compliant is option a). Option b) would
need coordination with weasel (tor's package maintainer).

Feel free to clone this bug to follow up on the previous ideas.

Bug#542670: vidalia: Wrongly says that a Tor process is already running

2009-08-20 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: vidalia
Version: 0.1.15-1
Severity: normal

Hi!

When I did execute "aptitude install vidalia" on a system where Tor was
not installed (and thus pulled as a Recommend), I was very suprised to
read that an existing Tor process was detected.

The issue comes from the "config" script, which unconditionally displays
"vidalia/info". Or debconf-devel(7) says:

The config script can be run in one of three ways:

  1 If a package is pre-configured, with dpkg-preconfigure, its
config script is run, and is passed the parameters "configure",
and installed-version.
2 When a package's postinst is run, debconf will try to run
the config script then too, and it will be passed the same
parameters it was passed when it is pre-configured. This is
necessary because the package might not have been
pre-configured, and the config script still needs to get a
chance to run. See HACKS for details.
  […]

The way the "config" and "postinst" scripts are written only works in
the second case. Then wrongly telling me that a running Tor process has
been detected.

After looking at a tcpdump of a Giver session, I have seen that

This makes Giver unsuitable to use on untrusted network, e.g. at

Bug#476388: partman-auto-crypto: Allow preseeding of the skip_erase flag

2008-04-16 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: partman-auto-crypto
Version: 7
Severity: wishlist

This wishlist is extracted for T. Nan's request [1] posted on the
debian-boot mailling-list.

partman-auto-crypto should define a debconf question (for preseeding
only) that would make it define the skip_erase flag for the encrypted
partition. This would allow one to bypass the lengthly erasing step
when doing automated installations.

As using this option would hamper the security of the encrypted
partition, enough warning should be present in the documentation.

Having the ability to skip erasure would at least benefit automated
testing of encrypted installations, and sounds worthwhile to have.

Bug#476540: Allow preseeding of netcfg/choose_interface=none

2008-04-17 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: netcfg
Version: 1.43
Severity: wishlist

netcfg gracefully handle the case where no network interfaces has been
detected on the system. But there is actually no way to get the same
behaviour (configuration limited to the hostname) when there is at least
an interface on the system.

When doing automated installations where the network configuration is
handled by custom scripts later on, there is currently no way to bypass
the network configuration done by netcfg.

Activating this option should be done by preseeding, probably by setting
"netcfg/choose_interface" to "none".

No actual recipes are actually used when using LVM or crypto auto
partitioning: an "enveloppe" is created by auto_lvm_prepare() which
contains enough space to hold every partitions tagged "lvmok" in the
recipe.

Its this enveloppe partition that is turned, when using crypto, into an
encrypted partition and that is erased. So there is no user accessible
recipes where one could actually specify such flag…

Maybe we should change the whole recipe format to add support for
stacked block devices, but that's a lot more work to do. :)

This laptop look fairly recent. I was not able to find a detailed
specifications, but it is possible that the CD-ROM drive is connected
through SATA. The kernel shipped with Etch have limited support for
these devices.

Could you please try again with the Lenny beta1 version [1] of the
installer? You can still install Etch with this version by adding
"suite=etch" at the boot prompt.

The other remaining options to install Etch are using an USB-stick and
doing a full network install. Both are documented in the installation
manual. [2]

irqpoll really slow down the system and it would be a loss to include it

Please note that this is fairly recent hardware. Your motherboard was
released after Etch.

Debian is slowly making progress on releasing Etch+1/2 which will make a
newer kernel available to the stable release, supporting more hardware.

Seems like one of these SATA controllers are unsupported by the Linux
kernel in Etch (2.6.18).

The flashing is normal: drivers for each supported controllers are
loaded only just before the CD detection. Most SCSI cards that I have
seen initialize their disks in turn, making their light flash that way.

The freezing, and the other issues mentioned below remind me about the
dreaded SCSI terminators problem. Could you please fully verify your
SCSI setup?

Hi!

Please keep the bug report in Cc. Please also note that I am just

Your problem seems unlikely to be directly in the installation software,

When started with "CAIRO_DIRECTFB_NO_ACCEL=true" in the environment, the

I have tested this with both cdebconf tests and by passing it as an

If the issue happens to need time to be properly solved, we could

Instead, rescue-mode offers to enter a passphrase for every LUKS header
detected on the partitions used by the software RAID, and unlocking
these partitions will simply fail with "Can not access device".

Bug#484259: rescue-mode: Should not offer partitions that are part of a MD device

2008-06-03 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: rescue-mode
Version: 1.15
Severity: minor

When rescue-mode ask which root partition it should use, the list
contains software RAID devices which is fine. But it also lists the
partitions that are part of these software RAID devices which can not be
mounted (fails with "Device or resource busy).

As an example:
  /dev/md0 is a RAID 1 software device using /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdc1.
The root filesystem is on /dev/md0.
Both /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdc1 will contain a valid filesystem as well
which can be selected as root partition in rescue mode.
Trying to mount these partitions will fail.

Bug#484272: partman-auto-lvm: Should support for explicit logical volume names in recipes

2008-06-03 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: partman-auto-lvm
Version: 27
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The attached patch adds support for explicitely preseeding a logical
volume name (instead of computing one) in recipes.

This is done by using "lvname{ }", which fits nicely with the
"vgname" option proposed in Grégory Oestreicher's patch in #462396.
(No test was done with both patches applied, though.)

Add support for preseeding logical volume names directly

partman-auto-lvm now support the direct preseeding of a logical volume
names (instead of computing one) using "lvname{ }" in the recipe.

The setup done by the debian-installer when using guided partitioning
with "encrypted LVM" is fully able to hibernate.

The layout is the following:
 * There is only two physical partitions on your hard drive,
a small unencrypted one for /boot, and the rest of the disk is
   all in an encrypted partition.
 * Use this encrypted partition as an LVM physical volume.
 * Then setup a LVM volume group with at least two logical volumes: one
for / and one for the swap.

When entering the passphrase during the boot sequence, you will be
unlocking both the root filesystem and the swap at the same time and
hibernation works fine. :)

cdebconf-entropy actually depends on libdebconfclient0-dev to be built,
but cdebconf-entropy does not actually produce a debconf client written
in C, but a *plugin* for cdebconf.

In order to achieve that, libdebconfclient0-dev provides headers that
are only related to cdebconf plugins. Those files should be moved out
to another package, probably called "cdebconf-dev". This package will
then be helpful to track ABI and API changes in cdebconf.

2008-06-15 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: swaks
Version: 0+20061116.0-2

Hi!

swaks is a really great tool, but I think that it's really useful when
libnet-ssleay-perl and libnet-dns-perl are installed.

As both aptitude and apt-get now installs Recommends by default, I think
these packages currently listed as Suggests should be upgraded to
Recommends.

Knowing how Perl works is not useful for testing mail servers,
authentication and encrypted channels, so I think perl-doc should stay
as a suggestion.

I never said that it was not useful without libnet-dns-perl.
But you get most out of swaks possibility when it is installed; that's
why I was suggesting a Recommends.

As you are the maintainer, it's up to you! :)

As a final suggestion, you could always patch swaks to suggest Debian
packages names in the same messages that suggests the missing Perl
module.

Actually, this is not new at all. Etch already fully supports
sudo-based system.

When gksu is available in the target system at the end of the
installation (for example, by being installed by the "desktop" task),
it is properly configured to use sudo if no root password has been
entered.

See the "user-setup-apply" script in user-setup.

Bug#487955: reprepro: sub-components not handled properly

2008-06-25 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: reprepro
Version: 3.5.1-1
Severity: normal

Hi!

I am trying to create a repository that would look like Debian's
volatile or security repositories. Both uses Components like
"updates/main" or "volatile/main".

Unfortunately, reprepro seems unable to handle such repositories.
The "normal" configuration snippet in conf/distributions shoud be:

  Origin: Debian
  Suite: stable
  Codename: etch
  Architectures: i386
  Components: updates/main

But when using "export", the Release file is created in
dists/etch/Release when it should be created in
dists/etch/updates/Release.

Same goes for the paths to Packages files which have an extra "updates/"
directory.

Thanks for your help and this great piece of software. :)

Doing this result in a Release file containing (indeed):
  Codename: etch/updates
  Components: main

This diverges slightly from Release files in security or volatile
repositories:
  Codename: etch
  Components: updates/main updates/contrib updates/non-free

Limited to conf/distributions, it is not really a problem, but when
adding updates it gets hard to have a correct configuration, and
this tends to trigger APT warnings for codename mismatch.

After fiddling a lot with the configuration and setting up manual
symlinks, it seems that we now have something working. You might
consider this bug as only a cosmetic issue or lack of documentation.

I have made a first one by grepping through the source code. As
"apt-install" is used in code, we can't really think of automating the
process of creating such list.

The debian-installer team might probably be able to maintain a list in
its source repository. Would that be fine for the release-team?

Hi!

postfixadmin upstream provides a .deb package [1] since version 2.2.0,

Maybe someone should convince them to properly maintain it inside

I have made a test of ppp-udeb with today's daily builds of the
installer, and it simple fails right now.

I have also tested the previously sent patch, and indeed confirm that it
solves the issue.

Please integrate the patch in the next upload!

Bug#473782: ppp-udeb: Please enable preseeding of a fallback DNS

2008-04-01 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: ppp-udeb
Version: 2.4.4rel-9
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

If a PPPoE server does not send any DNS IP, ppp-udeb will not set any
nameserver in resolv.conf, thus making the rest of the installation
process likely to fail.

The attached patch solves this issue by using the value of
netcfg/get_nameservers as a fallback. This allows to preseed a fallback
DNS, solving this problem.

It looks like an hardware problem. It might be triggered only with the

Imagine that you have a PC Card NIC. The drivers for the PC Card
controller are in a udeb on an IDE CD-ROM drive. You would not enable
the PC Card service during the first question, but you would the second

A specific partitioning interface for the graphical installer is in
everyone's mind for a while now. The first step was to work on the GTK+
frontend for cdebconf to make the creation of plugins easier and this is
mostly done now.

Given the short time before the release of Lenny, we have decided to
improve the current interface (by providing properly aligned columns
instead of misrendered whitespaces) instead of working on a specific
partitioner interface.

The main issue is lack of time and interested contributors though.

As far as I understand your issue, it might be related to your BIOS
settings.

In any case, the installation CD provides a rescue mode which you can
start be typing "rescue" at the initial installation boot prompt (the
one with the Debian logo). The rescue mode provide an option to
reinstall the boot loader. See:

This bug seems triggered by recent changes in parted, but is actually in
partman-lvm.

> […]
> And:
> # ls /dev/mapper/

>
> This last device obviously should NOT be there.

This last devices is created because update.d/lvm_sync_flag did not skip
crypto devices and did set the "lvm" flag on the "virtual" partition.
The result is that partman believes that the "virtual" (of type loop)
has been changed and apply these changes on commit.

It then gets everything wrong and create the _cryptp1 partition.

update.d/lvm_sync_flag previously partitions on RAID devices, but this
must also be done for partition on crypto devices. And actually, it
looks to me like we could skip every disk with partition type "loop"
from LVM flag settings.

The attached patch fixed the issue in my tests.

Skip devices of type "loop" in lvm_sync_flag

Device of type loop (e.g. RAID or crypto) do not handle flag setting
correctly. Previously, only LVM on /dev/md* partitions were skipped in
lvm_sync_flag. We now skip every devices with the partition type "loop"
to also skip crypto devices.

Attached is a patch the implements this. Details inside.

Attached is also a patch against udev that simple moves
/lib/debian-installer-startup.d/S02udev to
/lib/debian-installer/start-udev so the script can be called from the
init script.

I have tested that script on an amd64 build using KVM and also with the

Start udev before running init

In order to solve the #484366, udev needs to be started before we start
busybox init as we don't want to create every /dev/tty devices
manually.

udev-udeb (>= 1.125-6) moved the startup script from
/lib/debian-installer-startup.d/S02udev to
/lib/debian-installer/start-udev. The later is called directly in
the initial init script.

Starting udev requires /sys to be available, and we now mount it
as we do for /proc.

udev already needed be available in order to make the installer boot, so
rootskel now depends on udev-udeb. We can thus avoid testing for the
presence of udevd on the initrd.

As rootskel depends on udev-udeb, there is no further need to
explicitely udev-udeb to pkg-lists/base.

Looks like an incompatibility with the graphical menu (vesamenu) used by
the new installer.

Care to ellaborate which graphic adapter it is? Which kind of screen is
connected? Are you using any kind of KVM equipment?

I am reassigning this bug to syslinux, at the issue should probably be
solved there.

You can probably get the information by using "lspci" on the installed

The preseed appendix currently says:

"The keymap must be valid for the selected keyboard architecture."

If we don't support all valid keymaps, I would be in favor of changing
this to:

"The keymap must be known to the debian-installer for the selected
   keyboard architecture."

Or any better wording…

From what I have read in this thread, the -486 flavour of 2.6.25
(testing) or 2.6.26 (unstable) should work. Could you please try to
install them on a running system and tell us if they works?

In that case, we probably need to select -486 on all CPU which have
CentaurHauls as vendor_id.
(in base-installer/kernel/i386.sh:arch_get_kernel_flavour)

Could you check your dest/MANIFEST.udebs file to see which version of

Ok, so with this procedure I was in the wrong track.

You could you please look if you see anything wrong in the syslog.
Eventually, you can add "set -x" to:

While testing rescue-mode, I noticed that the root filesystem (ext3)
was mounted as ext2 by the following log line:

  kernel: EXT2-fs warning (device hda6) ext2_fill_super: mounting ext3

Maybe we need to explicitely try ext3 before relying on autodection.

Bug#495676: hw-detect: hw-detect new device detection misbehaves with wlan* devices

2008-08-19 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: hw-detect
Version: 1.65
Severity: important

Hi!

While testing a daily image on a Lenovo R61 with a manually updated
2.6.26 image, I was puzzled when I was asked "Do you intend to use
FireWire Ethernet?" on a machine which has both wired and wireless LAN
cards.

2.6.26 kernels re-introduced the old FireWire stack. So we are back
having the eth1394 module available, and thus FireWire ethernet. That's
why the following issue did not pop up before.

After digging through the logs, I eventually found that every single
card was listed as "FireWire ethernet" in /etc/network/devnames. Next
step was figuring out why could make that happen.

More tests later, I eventually found that this was due to the way
hw-detect finds a new network interface after loading a module.

The list of available interface is known by snapshot_devs()
after sorting the content of the first column in /proc/net/dev,
e.g. "lo eth0".

This list is kept while a new module is loaded, then snapshot_devs() is
called again to get something like "lo eth0 eth1". To compare those
lists and get the new interfaces, compare_devs() is used.

compare_devs() basically currently works by doing:
  echo ${devs#$olddevs}

In the previous case, as ethX interfaces are always added at the end,
both lists have the same start, and so compare_devs() nicely output
"eth1".

Unfortunately, thanks to new Wi-Fi stacks, we now have interfaces that
are not named "ethX". On this laptop we get the following:

  compare_devs "lo eth0 wlan0 wmaster0" "lo eth0 eth1 wlan0 wmaster0"

   not inserted at the end!

I see two possible fixes here:

 * Stop sorting devices in snapshot_devs() anymore. I don't see why
the kernel would reorder the content of /proc/net/dev when new
modules are inserted. From my tests, this nicely solved the issue.
 * Make compare_dev() able to detect the addition in the middle of the
device list. For the record, modifying compare_devs to use the
   following did the trick:

 sed="$(echo $olddevs | sed -e 's#\([a-z0-9]\+\) *#s/\1 *//;#g')"
 echo $devs | sed -e "$sed"

I tried to dig the history of the repository in order to figure out why
snapshot_dev() used "sort" in the first place, but I was not able to get
any meaningful result. Do anyone have an idea?

Otherwise, removing the sorting sounds like the best option to me.

Cheers,

reopen-console is writing in /var/run/console-device the console that
was found in the first run, so the result would be more meaningful if
the "set -x" was add by using BOOT_DEBUG=3 and then running something
like "/sbin/reopen-console echo" manually.

> There seem to be various issues:
> - trying /dev/ttyS0 is just plain wrong for s/390: /dev/ttyS0 does not

Indeed. Could you look at kernel messages for anything related to the
console? Using "dmesg -s 65535 | grep console" should probably do the
trick.

I might have misunderstood the meaning of the "console handover" line
and that's probably where the /dev/ttyS0 line came from, as
reopen-console defaults to /dev/console if no console can be found.

> - steal-ctty's error message should include the name of the file that does
> not exist

True.

> - the program should not end in a loop

The loop is caused by init trying, as told in inittab, to respawn the
process. It don't really feel like an issue for me, because this should
not happen. What could be done is a final check in reopen-console for
the existence of the device file, though…

Did you remove all Logical Volumes, Volume Groups and Physical Volumes
before changing the RAID 1 partitions?

partman have a locking mechanism that is already used for crypto that
prevent such problems by not allowing partitions in use to be changed.
Unfortunately, the changes required to use this mechanism for RAID are
too invasive for Lenny (two d-i components needs to be merged before
adding the feature).

I have looked into this and the issue is actually in the GDK/DirectFB
port. DirectFB resources are not released/deallocated properly when the
GTK main loop exits.

I have tried to see how this could be resolved, by GDK intrasics are
still a bit beyond my head, and I think a fair bit of the code has to
be reworked in order to do so.

Wild guess after having a look at the log: is the firmware only
requested when trying to brought the interface up?

This would explain why the firmware is only asked during disk-detect:
 1. ethdetect loads the iwl driver,
 2. netcfg tries to up the interface, which fails as the firmware is
missing, but iwl firmware is added to missing-firmware,
 3. disk-detect runs and ask for the iwl firmware.

If you still have access to the necessary hardware, can you look how far
I am from what is really happening?

If something close happens, we probably need to find a way to "up" then
"down" every interfaces in ethdetect, just to be sure that we have the

Is this also the last message you see when using "Expert Installation"?

Normal installation are booted with the "quiet" kernel command-line
parameter which silences most kernel messages.

I agree with the fact that partman currently feels a little bit
sluggish, even on not that old hardware.

Various improvements could probably be done, but we need people willing
to work on that. Those changes would need to wait until the release of
Lenny though.

Thanks for your detailed report. As we are trying to polish things up
for Lenny, this is definitely worthwhile. Would you be able to do other
test installations as we fix the issue you have encountered here?

This issue is already known. See #490562.

Assigned to hw-detect.

I see two possible fix:
 * make firmware.agent idempotent while adding files to
   /tmp/missing-firmware,
 * call "sort -u" or "uniq" in check-missing-firmware.sh:read_log().

Ok, various interesting bugs happening here (all assigned to hw-detect):

 * Firmware packages should not be installed for firmware that were not
   explicitely required.

This would need further investigation as the code, as far as I can
see, should filter out the packages present on the media based on
   needed firmware files.

 * The post-base-installer hook uses "dpkg -i" to install the firmware
packages on the target system. This will fail if the firmware
package dependencies are not fulfilled on the target at that time of
   the installation process.

Possible fix: switch to a "dpkg --unpack", "apt-get -f install"
 construct

 * If firmware packages for other architectures than all or the one
being installed are present on the firmware media, the
post-base-installer hook will try to install them nevertheless. This
   will obviously fails.

Possible fix: filter packages for wrong architectures in
 check-missing-firmware.sh

This issue is strongly connected to the "persistent device naming"
issue, which we are aware of and hard enough so we were not able to
tackle it on time for Lenny.

I do wonder if we should not make an extra confirmation if we detect
that grub-installer is going to put the MBR on a USB disk, as it should
not be the most common case.

Could you please try with a daily built image? You will be able to
download them from the links on:
  http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

Please use the "Save debug logs" menu option if you still encounter
problem, as with the present information you gave us, it's pretty hard
to figure out what is the problem.

Just for the record, it seems that busybox upstream is working on that:

config FEATURE_SH_NOFORK
bool "Run 'nofork' applets directly"
default n
depends on (MSH || LASH || HUSH || ASH) && FEATURE_PREFER_APPLETS
help
This option causes busybox shells [currently only ash]
to not execute typical fork/exec/wait sequence, but call _main
directly, if possible. (Sometimes it is not possible: for example,
this is not possible in pipes).

This will be done only for some applets (those which are marked
  NOFORK in include/applets.h).

This may significantly speed up some shell scripts.

This feature is relatively new. Use with care.

It seems to have been added in busybox 1.11.

Most SATA drivers can be set (using the BIOS) to use a compatible mode
which would be supported, AFAIK, by the ide-generic driver which exists
in d-i beta2.

The current daily builds of the debian-installer uses the 2.6.25 kernel
and ships the pata_marvell driver in the pata-modules udeb. The
pata-modules is priority "standard" and is included on the CD-ROM but
not included in the cdrom initial ramdisk. Thus making it unavailable
until the content of the CD can be read (with a driver that would
support it, for example).

The ide-pci-generic module that is shipped in 2.6.25 has a command-line
option "all_generic_ide" that will make it claim all unknown PCI IDE
storage controller, which might fit your Marvell's.

Could you please try to start a daily build of the debian-installer,
specifiying on the boot command-line (use TAB to enter additional
paramaters), the following:
  all_generic_ide=1

I am leaving the rest of your email as it contains information that
have not been read by other followers of the debian-boot mailling-list.

The change of default codepage which broke usage of FAT filesystems in
d-i have been dealt with in the last upload of i386 kernel udeb.

Could you please try the next daily build and see if the floppy works

Bug#492331: installation-report: a few glitches

The difference between "expert" and "normal" installation is just a
matter of debconf priority. Normal installations just show debconf
questions with priority high or critical. Expert adds medium on top of
that.

You should probably try a normal installation and see by yourself that
you'll probably need to answer less than 15 different questions to get a
fully operational desktop system.

be fixed before Lenny.

Are you talking about the following template?

Allow login as root? If you choose not to allow root to log in, then
a user account will be created and given the power to become root
   using the 'sudo' command.

I don't see how exacltly it could be improved, as it seems pretty
obvious to me that this is a system-wide setting.

An SSH server is already automatically installed when a system is
installed through an SSH connection (network-console). For other means
of installation, one can install the openssh-server once the
installation process is done through the same way the installation was
made (through classic console or serial connection).

AFAIK, you did not miss it. People who want fine tuning of their
packages usually unselect every tasks and start installing packages with
a plain base system after the first reboot.

This used to be the case. Being offline, I can't point you to the
discussion which lead to this decision, but laptop and desktop users
usually don't need to configure a full mail daemon.

"dpkg-reconfigure exim4" can also be done after the first reboot.

Location and language are asked because rescue mode is also localized
and having help messages in your native language is a desirable choice.
Same for keyboard layout. The network configuration is done because
rescue mode might need to retrieve installer components only available
from a Debian mirror.

IIRC, these are the only questions currently asked. Both newt and GTK+
frontend displays a label with "Rescue mode" on top of the screen.
Should another message be added in your opinion?

I am leaving this installation report to eventually discuss a little bit
more on those issue, but most of them are already known.
