Bug#531428: beagle-backend-evolution no longer indexes evolution

2009-06-01 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: beagle-backend-evolution
Version: 0.3.9-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

beagle-backend-evolution doesn't index evolution, I suppose since the change to
sqlite.
It's driving me crazy :-)
Since indexing evolution is the purpose of this package, the fact that it
doesn't work seems to justify
grave.
I'm filing this bug because I'd like to know what's happening. Evolution 2.24
and 2.26 have been out for a
while and I can't find a bug report to track this in Debian. Fast searching if
email is indispensable
to me, for what it's worth.

Ubuntu has bug reports so other people are seeing this problem. Unfortunately,
I seem to lack the necessary
skills or magical ability to learn anything of practical use from Ubuntu bug
reports.

Bug#601610: When idle is launched from kde menu to run PyQt code it crashes but not when started from terminal

2010-10-27 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: idle
Version: 2.6.6-3+squeeze1
Severity: normal

To reproduce:
1. Start idle from the KDE menu or from krunner (Alt-F2)
2. Open a Python program which displays a PyQt form.
3. Run the program, and close the PyQt window
4. Repeat step 3. idle crashes

Reproducible every time.

However, starting idle from a console never crashes.
When running idle from a console, the python shell embedded in idle displays
the text message RESTART each time the python program in the other window is
executed. This message does not appear when idle is run from krunner.

Example program that causes the bug (it seems that any simple PyQt program
causes this)o

Bug#505270: More infor re splashy bug 505270

2008-12-09 Thread tim richardson

 Tim,

Is it possible that your problem is related to /etc/splashy/config.xml ?

Try copying this file to /root/config.xml and purging Splashy 0.3.10
(dpkg --purge splashy) (from Lenny) and installing the Sid version
(0.3.12), then copy your config.xml back to /etc/splashy.

Luis, I think you are following a false lead. See below for my clues, but
first, I followed your request:

1) I reverted to 0.3.10 and verified that it worked.

Then, I copied config.xml as you suggested

2) I purged and went back to Sid. libsplashy and uswsusp were also updated.
After the updgrade, I verified that the bug reappeared (splashy flashes
momentarily, and then it disappears, as described earlier in the bug report)
Then I copied the saved config.xml to /etc/splashy

(Of course, bug 504389 appeared after going back to 0.3.12, for which I have
submitted a patch http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=504389 )

3) The saved config file made no difference. The startup behavious of 0.3.12 is
still broken.
I actually see this on all three machines running Debian, one of them being an
AMD desktop with Nvidia video so it has nothing to do with intel graphics.

 My clues: :-)

It is very strange that a very simple fix solves the problem:
creating /etc/directfbrc and putting in a path to the log-file as I described
earlier.
That is, this content in /etc/directfbrc solves the problem.

log-file=/tmp/directfb.log

Move that file, and the bug reappears. 100% guaranteed. It also fixes it on all
three of my machines.

Clue part 2: change the log-file path to be /root/directfb.log and the bug
reappears.

So it only fixes the problem when /tmp is used

There is not actually any log file created in /tmp.

I hope this is a huge clue, but I don't know enough about directfb to make any
sense of it.
My wild guess is that without /etc/directfbrc, directfb falls back to a default
location that is not writable.
Why would that affect this new version of splashy? Change of execution to
premount, maybe?

Also strange: I can not duplicate the error on any virtualbox machines. I even
made a virtual machine with a separate /home partition.
Couldn't reproduce it.

The new file calls the themes from /usr/share/splashy/themes/. I just
want to rule out that this is not the cause of your problem. Can you
send a copy of your initrd (/boot/initrd.img-`uname -r`) and
 /etc/fstab to my email?

I will send my initrd.img via yousendit.com

/etc/fstab is:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
/dev/hda1 / ext3errors=remount-ro 0 1

Bug#511744: samba: ext3 fs default case-sensitive parameter is wrong and risks data loss

2009-01-13 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: samba
Version: 2:3.2.5-4
Severity: important

When investigating bug #510564 I noticed this

1. Share an ext3 folder with samba on a Debian host
2. On a Debian client, use nautilus to create two different files on the samba
share,
file.txt and file.abc. Put different content in the two different files
3. Rename file.abc to be file.TXT
4. Note that silently, file.txt has been destroyed. The icon in nautilus may
still be visible, but on opening it, it will show the contents of the original
file.abc

Because this involves dataloss, it may be considered a grave bug.

This is fixed by forcing case sensitive yes in the samba share (on the server).
In this case, file.txt and file.TXT are different.

It seems that auto case-sensitive doesn't work properly.
I used SWAT for the samba server admin. Debian in both cases (server and
client) was Sid.

I leave #510564 open because while I think samba should be fixed, it should
also be fixed in Nautilus, because there is no guarantee about the samba server
being a fixed version.

Bug#511744: copied it to a samba bug

2009-01-13 Thread Tim Richardson
I made a samba bug report because perhaps there is a bug with auto
case-sensitivity, or with the default settings.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=511744

However, fixing it at the samba server wouldn't really close this bug
until all samba servers had migrated to a hypothetical fixed version.

Bug#511744: how to do packet capture?

2009-01-14 Thread Tim Richardson
I will try to work out how to do this (make a packet capture). Is
tcpflow the right tool?
If it takes just a couple of minutes for you to indicate how, I'd really
appreciate it.
The man page is convincing that it must be a client problem.

\

I leave #510564 open because while I think samba should be fixed, it
should also be fixed in Nautilus, because there is no guarantee about the
samba server being a fixed version.

Please forward a packet capture showing that case-sensitive file handling
has been negotiated by the client. If it hasn't been, then this is a client
 bug, not a server bug.

Setting 'case sensitive = yes' is wrong as a default, for the reasons
 described in the smb.conf manpage.

I am not confident of doing force merge to merge 510564 and
511744,

I think 511744 should be the lead bug report. It is now assigned
to libsmbclient with a patch pending upstream review, but it is
only serverity important.

Bug#512289: anjuta hangs when accessing Variable dialog of working directory in add tool

2009-01-19 Thread Tim Richardson
I just got a crash while running anjuta in a console. This crash was caused
by running the quilt add command which at the moment simply echoes two
parameters.

Attached is the xml file.

this is the console output when the crash occurred while running
quilt add. This does not happen every time. In the last 15 minutes I have had
three crashes. This one, plus two while clicking on the variables button to
parameters to tools.
I can not reliable reproduce these crashes. Mostly, if I restart and repeat the
actions, it doesn't crash.

Bug#487414: A patch

2009-01-20 Thread Tim Richardson
After this patch is applied, F2 can be enabled automatically at boot by
adding this tag to the theme.xml

 autoverboseonstartyes/autoverboseonstart

After installing this package, the default theme includes the new tag
(set to no).

It is necessary to make sure the theme has textboxenableyes

 textbox
!-- whether you want the textbox always
shown or no. If no, it will be shown only on error--
enableyes/enable

The patch is attached.
It touches many files since I updated affected man pages plus the theme
generation code. I also made some minor improvements to interactive
theme generation (a message explains why theme name and image name input
is not accepted).

I removed the unused code for the verbose error messages (it was very,
very slow as indicated in the code), and I marked in the man pages that
verbose on error is not implemented

Bug#517044: Debian-installer

2009-02-25 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: debian-installer

Version is nightly 2008-02-24

I tried to install into a VirtualBox virtual machine on a Windows Vista
host, but the hard drive is not recognised.

I was prompted to choose a driver but PIIX does not work.

The lenny installer does work, so obviously I used that.

Bug#585524: Confirmation that the directory permissions are the problem

2010-06-16 Thread Tim Richardson
Finally got a chance to definitively test the effect of resetting the
directory permissions.

It fixes the problem. Thanks for finding this easy work around.

Bug#584540: grub-pc: savedefault not working (grubenv not updating?)

2010-06-04 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.98+20100602-1
Severity: normal

To the best of my ability I have configured /etc/default/grub for savedefault
functionality.
But it's not working.
I note that /boot/grub/grubenv has a modified date of May 25 and that if I move
this file, a new one is not created in its place, which is not what I expected.

When I say it's not working, I mean that grub-pc always defaults to the first
entry in my list, regardless of whether I most recently booted into Windows.

My /etc/default/grub is

Bug#584540: grub-pc: savedefault not working (grubenv not updating?)

2010-06-04 Thread Tim Richardson

Could you post the file /boot/grub/grubenv, preferably as an
*attachment* since it is not plain text?

Is anything else fancy going on? For instance, are you using LVM or
RAID? How far is /boot/grub/grubenv into the disk?

Thanks,

Attached.
Anything else fancy? no. It's a one-linux-partition laptop system, dual
boot into windows 7.
However, I get an error message error: file not found flashed up after
Welcome to GRUB and just before the menu loads.

Bug#584540: problem persists

2010-06-05 Thread Tim Richardson
Unfortunately the new package 1.98+20100602-2 fixed the file not found
error but not the dysfunctional savedefault.

Neither did the changes to /etc/grub.d/00_header

Bug#584874: openoffice.org-kde: F4 crashes calc

2010-06-07 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: openoffice.org-kde
Version: 1:3.2.1-1
Severity: normal

With Base and Calc installed, F4 crashes Calc when using the KDE integration
package.

f4 is supposed to browse registered databases.

removing openoffice.org-kde removes this problem.

This might be a dup of the other bug I reported on this package (closed)
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=570570
because I remember some discussion of this F4 bug. However, the upstream bug is
closed.
I'll check again.

Bug#566891: Recursive close

2010-06-22 Thread Tim Richardson

The upstream bug report is closed , and this is the reason why:

According to Debian developer Michael Biebl this is already fixed and will be
in 0.8.1:http://bugs.debian.org/566891#51

Thus closing. Thanks.

I haven't seen such a recursive bug close before.

Bug#560788: (no subject)

2009-12-12 Thread Tim Richardson
The file is in the package
libmysqlclient-dev (5.1.41-3)
which I did not have installed and was not a dependency (I suppose it
shouldn't be, being a -dev).

I filed against openoffice.org-base because Base is where I saw the bug, and I
assumed it may be related to the efforts of fix the last bug report I filed
regarding trying to use the native connector in Base.

Bug#558038: openoffice.org-base: paste from calc into base converts Calc date data into date serial integers, which then fails data conversion into a date column (on a MySql database)

2009-11-25 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: openoffice.org-base
Version: 1:3.1.1-8
Severity: normal

1. Make a spreadsheet with data formatted as dates and use row 1 for column
headings.
2. Copy this data range and then paste into Base, which brings up a dialog to
create a new table.
3a. If you choose a new table, then the date data is not recognised, and is
pasted as text.
3b. If you paste onto an existing table where the matching column has a date
type, the appending of the data fails because Base tries to import the date
value as the serial integer representation of the date. MySql doesn't recognise
this as a date and the import fails.

Bug#533128:

2009-06-23 Thread Tim Richardson
I get it simply with

gksu gnome-terminal

the error happens after the authentication dialog.

 (gksu:9543): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_x11_atom_to_xatom_for_display: assertion
 `atom != GDK_NONE' failed

is repeated four times.
Subsequent repeats of the command give no authentication dialog (fair enough),
no error messages and no root gnome-terminal, just silent failure.

My laptop does not need to be in dual-head mode to reproduce, but xorg.conf has
this:

 # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
 # again, run the following command:
 # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Bug#618278: libreoffice-writer: In font settings, bold and italic are Cursiva and Negreta

2011-03-13 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: libreoffice-writer
Version: 1:3.3.1-1
Severity: minor

in Format-Character-Font dialog, my English libreoffice shows these typeface
settings for Arial:
Normal, Cursiva, Negreta and Negrata cursiva.
As far as I know, I have only English langauge packs installed. Everything else
is in English.
Other fonts show Bold and Italic; this affects only Arial. In the KDE font
control panel, the type faces for Arial are Regular, Italic, Bold and
Bold Italic.
I also checked some other software using fonts: I see Arial font styles only in
English.

Bug#617319: Toolbars in Base

2011-03-19 Thread Tim Richardson
For what it's worth, the toolbars and form editing work in the RC2 of
3.3.2 from libreoffice.
A few minutes after I installed the .debs from libreoffice, I saw that
RC2 source has been accepted into unstable, so I guess in 48 hours (I'm
an x386 user at present) I'll know if the bug is fixed in the Debian
builds.

Bug#613613: libreoffice-base: Base opens windows on wrong screen, too big, almost unusable

2011-02-15 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: libreoffice-base
Version: 1:3.3.1~rc1-2
Severity: important

I reported this upstream (libreoffice upstream) but it has been ignored. I'll
check my bug report and update this one later.

I have a laptop usually with an external screen attached.
Base opens my forms on the smaller laptop window and thye don't fit.
It always does this, and it refuses to remember my replacement on to the
external screen.

I open the database on the external monitor.

using KDE.

Yes, I experience same error myself.

Try as a temporary (ugly!) workaround to add
/usr/lib/xulrunner-5.0 to a
file below /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ and invoke ldconfig.

When I tried that, another error occured which might be
unrelated.
Please report back if above works.

...or even better: help dig into the code and figure out a
solution - I
am clueless :-/

I'm guessing this problem is linked to sugar-hulahop-0.8.1 not
  building.
