Package: opensc
Version: 0.9.4-8
Severity: grave

Hi Eric,

The opensc package has a build-dependency on libsasl-dev, but none of
the resulting binaries have a dependency on libsasl7. Either the
package builds against libsasl-dev but the binary dependency is missing,
or the build dependency should be dropped because it's unused; in either
case, I'm filing this bug as "grave" because cyrus-sasl is RC-buggy and
should most likely be dropped for sarge.

The version of libxml-atom-perl in unstable has a dependency on
liblwp-authen-wsse-perl, which is nowhere to be found. This makes the
package unusable and is a grave bug.

Bug#240941: Alternatives for xzx

2005-04-16 Thread Philip Kendall
[ Apologies if this is now the wrong place to be adding this comment;
Fuse people see http://bugs.debian.org/240941 for context ]

Disclaimer: I'm the primary author of Fuse.

As previously noted in this bug report, the only other currently
available ZX Spectrum emulator in Debian is spectemu, which is not as
feature-rich as xzx. If there is a desire to have an emulator which
has vaguely equivalent features in Debian, one could consider Fuse:

http://fuse-emulator.sourceforge.net/

which emulates all the "normal" Spectrum models as well as some other
clones. There are already unofficial Debian packages available from

http://www.youmustbejoking.demon.co.uk/progs.linux.html#debian

I believe it would be possible to persuade Darren Salt (who produces the
above packages) to become a Debian maintainer for these packages.

Cheers,

Phil

In order not to incluce DOM Level 2 compatible classes in several
packages we should either create a package for them and make packages
depend on it or use patches (writing them if needed) to make the
software build with DOM level 3. That isnt too hard either.

Bug#304976: xfmail: spurious build-dependency on libsasl-dev

2005-04-16 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: xfmail
Version: 1.5.5-2
Severity: grave

Hi Florian,

The xfmail package has a build-dependency on libsasl-dev, but none of
the resulting binaries have a dependency on libsasl7. Either the
package builds against libsasl-dev but the binary dependency is missing,
or the build dependency should be dropped because it's unused; in either

Package: avr-libc

Hi,

Your package is failing to build in sarge because it build
dependes on gcc-avr (>=1:3.4.3-2) which didn't make it to sarge
yet because it's missing a build on arm.

This bug can be closed when the version of gcc-avr reaches
testing.

Package: blitz++

Hi,

Your package is failing to build in sarge. This seems to be
caused by a missing build dependency on g77. This seems to be
added in a later version but that version didn't make it in sarge
yet.

This is the error I get:
checking for g77... no
checking for pgf77... no
checking for fort77... no
checking for Fortran 77 compiler default output file name... configure: error:

This bug can be closed when the new version reaches sarge.

Hi all,
after some investigation this error is caused by the update of the
org.w3c.* classes in the free runtimes to DOM Level 3.
Its basically the same problem I struggled with during the process
of moving libxalan2-java and libpgjava to main.
There are two possiblities:
(1) Use JDK 1.4 to build as it has DOM Level 2
I think we all agree that this is NO option !
(2) Include DOM Level 2 source classes in the debian directory
and use the trick that source takes precedence over binary classes
from the runtime during compilation.
If no one has objections or another working approach I will prepare
a new upload for possibility 2.
Wolfgang

The same version builds in sarge. Note that in sarge
openafs is still version 1.2.13-1 while in sid it's
1.3.81-3. I suspect this is an API change.

Package: ocamlcreal
Severity: grave

ocamlcreal failed to build from sources on ia64:

  http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=3Docamlcreal&ver=3D0.4-6&arch=3Di=
a64&stamp=3D1113341294&file=3Dlog&as=3Draw

at a first look it did not run configure before building the package and
thus did not discover that ocamlc.opt was not available. I have no idea
on why this happened only on ia64, maybe there is some issues with the
toolchain.

Still, the problem has to be faced since ocamlcreal is blocking the
3.08.3 transition. Could you please have a look at it? If the solution
requires a new upload please upload with urgency (at least) medium.

TIA,
Cheers.

Hi,

The package is now failing to build because it doesn't
build-depend on itself while it currently needs that.

When it's not installed, I get:
dh_clean

make: type-handling: Command not found
make: Nothing to be done for `build'.

Correct. But since I desperately needed the databases (after all, this are
my production LDAP servers), I upped the number to this very high value,
so they would hold up in an case, without me manualle rebuilding the
database every 6 to 12 hours.

I am about to lower this to 1, since 10 is just to high for my
workload, consuming to much memory.

> Has the database held up under stress after making these changes?

Yes, after the changes, I experienced no more lookups or database
corruptions.

1000 seems to low in most cases, at least my experience show this.

But: I still consider it a grave bug for db4.2, if running out of lockers
corrupts the database. And I consider it a bug in slapd, if it runs into a
busy-waiting loop, if something inside the database went wrong.

Sven.

Actually I was waiting for a new glibc to come out so I could start
uploading 1.4.0 :) I have a 1.4.0 package already prepared so I just
need to compile it with the new glibc and I'll upload it soon.

Justification: Policy 7.2

This package claims to be a Gtk+ browser for documentation, but depends
on none of the CIL bindings to Gtk+/etc that are necessary to make it
work, and there is nothing else in the package which could be conceived
of as useful by itself.

Obviously this is horribly broken according to Policy 7.2:
"The Depends field should be used if the depended-on package is
required for the depending package to provide a significant amount
   of functionality."

As far as I can tell, these dependencies should include libgtk-cil,
libglade-cil, and libgnome-cil. Viz:

$ sudo apt-get install monodoc-browser
...
Setting up monodoc-browser (1.0.4-1) ...

Finally! Except the search doesn't work, because even though the postinst
failed to generate a search index due to the missing dependencies, the
script didn't return an error, so I have the package installed with no
index. Heinous missing dependencies aside, errors in this process should
also be caught and flagged up appropriately by making the postinst
script fail.

Rob

Thanks. I suspect the reason why I'm not seeing this is because I use
sudo for pbuilding, while you're using fakeroot. How are you calling
pbuilder? I'm unable to use fakeroot with it (although I'd love to..).

Bug#304916: [FTBFS] schedutils need to be updated with the recent glibc change

2005-04-16 Thread GOTO Masanori
Package: schedutils
Version: 1.3.4-1
Severity: serious
Tags: patch, sid, sarge

In the recent up coming glibc-2.3.2.ds1-21, two system call,
sched_setaffinity and sched_getaffinity, are changed. New interface
needs three argument (OTOH, glibc 2.3.2.ds1-20 has only two
arguments). The new upstream schedutils 1.4.0 is already released and
it uses new three-argument style system calls.

If you plan to dupload schedutils 1.4.0, you rebuild package with
glibc 2.3.2.ds1-21 and dupload it. Don't forget to update
Build-Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-21) in debian/control.  If you plan
to change for the current 1.3.4 and dupload it, please apply my
attached patch, and dupload it.

Hi,

libsary-ruby1.8 is currently uninstallable because it depends on
libsary9 which is not in the archive. libsary10 seems to be the
current version.

Package: glibc
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The current Sarge glibc still provides the obsolete 2-argument
interface for sched_setaffinity(). As more software is starting to
use this system call, this is becoming a real issue because developers
will have to create a special version just for Debian.

Specifically, in libc6{,.1} currently declares:

extern int sched_setaffinity (__pid_t __pid, __const cpu_set_t *__mask)
 __THROW;

whereas the proper interface has 3 arguments:

 extern int sched_setaffinity (__pid_t __pid, size_t __cpusetsize,
   __const cpu_set_t *__cpuset) __THROW;

(likewise for sched_getaffinity()).

Please fix this problem before Sarge goes out the door.

Several of us noticed that evolution on Debian/unstable sometimes
crashes early
during program startup. It turns out that the crash is due to memory
corruption. In one particular case, the memory that got corrupted was in the
address range:

 0x22daff10-0x22daff1f

which happened to hold the function descriptors for shared library linkage stubs
("jump slots"). Of relevance was that the thread-pointer (r13) had the value:

 0x22db0500

The corruption was caused by any NPTL routine trying to access the
thread-descriptor, since NPTL uses a "struct pthread" of size 1680 bytes
(0x690).

I believe the problem is due to the fact that /lib/ld-linux-ia64.so.2 was built
for Linux Threads, which uses a thread descriptor size of 0x500. Note that
sysdeps/generic/dl-tls.c has several references to TLS_PRE_TCB_SIZE for the case
where TLS_DTV_AT_TP is defined. In other words, ld.so ends up having a
dependency on the size of the thread-descriptor. Sure enough, if I invoke
evolution like this:

  /lib/tls/ld-linux-ia64.so.2 evolution

it works just fine.

My understanding is that /lib/ld-linux-ia64.so.2 should work for both NPTL and
LinuxThreads libraries and the dependency on the size of the thread-descriptor
is accidental.

I believe this same bug may affect Alpha, PowerPC, and SH.

For Alpha, I found this bug report, which sounds potentially related:

  http://sources.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=299

Version: 4.3.10-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

ibase_connect doesn't work in php scripts.
I found that the problem is missing configuration file for firebird.
Syslog information:
Apr 15 17:25:14 net2004 php4: Missing configuration file:
/usr/lib/firebird2/firebird.conf, exiting (No such file or directory)

After creating that file (even empty) everything works OK.

I do not know is this problem php4-interbase specific, or whole library
(libfirebird2-classic) bug.

http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=&pkg=java-gnome and it FTBFS on
a lot of arches :(

# 2.8.3-2 (ia64) (latest build at Dec 21 04:34: maybe-failed)

only s390 (and I suppose x86) success.

Debian Woody's schema files for openldap do not provide the objectClass
"kerberosSecurityObject", but migrationtool's migrate_passwd.pl script
create an ldif file containing

This at all prevents ldif import:

This is probably due to the clean target running "make clean" instead

Bug#301607: cdbs: control auto-build messes with long descriptions

2005-04-16 Thread Steve Langasek
clone 301607 -1
reassign -1 cstream
severity -1 serious
retitle -1 cstream: debian/rules clean modifies the source package
severity 301607 important
thanks

I don't consider this a release-critical bug in cdbs because packages
shouldn't be using DEB_AUTO_UPDATE_DEBIAN_CONTROL *anyway*: packages that do
so are in violation of policy section 4.8, because it means
./debian/rules build clean is no longer idempotent when run using differing
versions of cdbs.

As a result, while I consider DEB_AUTO_UPDATE_DEBIAN_CONTROL a gross
misfeature of cdbs that ought to be removed, it is the responsibility of
other package maintainers to not use it for packages uploaded to Debian --
it is not the fault of the cdbs maintainers that you're using an optional
feature of cdbs that violates policy.

Hi,

We are running debian sarge on some of our servers now and are getting
data and index corruption (every few weeks). On different servers
(configured the same) we experience those problems. I think it is
openldap that causes this problem because openldap 2.2 doesn't have this
problems with the same bdb backend. (db4.2)

We only use this option in DB_CONFIG but i think it doesn't have
anything to do with the problem:
set_cachesize 0 524288000

I've searched the logs for any inconsistency but i couldn't find anything
in the logs.

Another little problem i experienced is the bad performance with 2.1.30
i've benched 2.1.30 and 2.2.20 a little bit and i got this:
On the server (openldap 2.1.30):
IBM eServer series: 1 Ghz with 1.5 Gb RAM (Kernel: 2.6.8)
www0:~# time id user_from_ldap
uid=1003(user_from_ldap) gid=1003(user_from_ldap) groups=1003(user_from_ldap)

real0m1.588s
user0m0.059s
sys 0m0.017s

the real is between the 1.4 to 1.8 seconds.

Desktop system (openldap 2.2.20)
Pentium 2 350Mhz with 192Mb RAM (Kernel: 2.6.8)
desktop:~# time id user_from_ldap

real0m0.388s
user0m0.059s
sys 0m0.017s

The real on this one is between 0.2 and 0.4 seconds.

On both machines ldap is running on localhost.

I've now a few weeks openldap 2.2 running on my desktop system and i
didn't get any data or index corruption and it's fast as hell.

I've seen that the main blocker is the gnutls patch. Well i ported the
patch almost to 2.2.20. There are a few things i have to look for. And
then i hope it will work. I don't know how far you are with that patch
but i hope, really hope that 2.2.20 can make it into Sarge.

If you need more information please mail me.

Regards,

Matthijs Mohlmann

Why don't you just avoid defining DEFAULT_REALM?

The last follow-up in that ITS points to
, which gives guidelines
about how to tune the number of available locks and lockers. Is this what
you did? Has the database held up under stress after making these changes?

I'm not sure how useful it is to set a fixed number of lockers by default,
since the optimal value depends on usage statistics; but bumping from 1000
to 5000 doesn't seem like it can hurt much.

Bug#297769: patch

I investigated this problem, and finally I decided to bump up shlib
vers because (1) it seems it's harmless with my some tests, (2) we
can't anticipate which packages use sched_{set,get}affinity, even if
we have lintian labs (ex: fakeroot does not sched_*).

Bug#304885: FTBFS on ia64

2005-04-16 Thread Stefano Zacchiroli
Package: ocamlcreal
Severity: grave

ocamlcreal failed to build from sources on ia64:

http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=ocamlcreal&ver=0.4-6&arch=ia64&stamp=1113341294&file=log&as=raw

at a first look it did not run configure before building the package and
thus did not discover that ocamlc.opt was not available.

TIA,
Cheers.

Bug#304549: LinuxThreads thread stack sizes don't stay set on alpha

2005-04-16 Thread Steve Langasek
reassign 304549 libldap-2.2-7
retitle 304549 libldap-2.2-7: libldap_r is not correctly linked against
libpthread
thanks

Ok folks, sorry for the noise; I've found the bug, and it *is* related to
thread stack handling, but it is *not* a glibc bug: the problem is that
libldap_r is not linked with -pthread as it should be, so the resulting lib
has an unversioned reference to pthread_create() which ends up resolving to
an old implementation that assumes the provided struct is garbage and
overrides it. Thus the problem most likely affects all 64-bit
architectures, being influenced only by sizeof(long) and the resulting large
array on the stack.

Torsten, I'm looking over the libldap_r Makefile to confirm what the right
way is to get it linked with -pthread. This stuff really shouldn't be in
the library at all AFAICT, and is merely a symptom of upstream's habit of
shoving server stuff into libldap_r; that ought to be fixed, but in the
meantime I'll work up a patch for the immediate problem and possibly throw a
check in debian/rules that will catch mis-linked libraries for us in the
future. Expect a commit soon.

Thanks,
