Unfortunately, I've switched to OS X on a ibook, so I'm not able to
carry this forward. Thanks for your help,

Version: 1:1.12.9-11
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

CVS 1.12.12 fixes several security issues:

* Thanks to a report from Alen Zukich <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, several minor
security issues have been addressed. One was a buffer overflow that is
potentially serious but which may not be exploitable, assigned CAN-2005-0753
by the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project
<[41]http://www.cve.mitre.org>. Other fixes resulting from Alen's report
include
repair of an arbitrary free with no known exploit and several plugged memory
leaks and potentially freed NULL pointers which may have been exploitable for
  a denial of service attack.

* Thanks to a report from Craig Monson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, minor
potential vulnerabilities in the contributed Perl scripts have been fixed.
The confirmed vulnerability could allow the execution of arbitrary code on
the CVS server, but only if a user already had commit access and if one of
the contrib scripts was installed improperly, a condition which should have
been quickly visible to any administrator. The complete description of the
  problem is here: . If
you were making use of any of the contributed trigger scripts on a CVS
server, you should probably still replace them with the new versions, to be
  on the safe side.

Unfortunately, our fix is incomplete. Taint-checking has been enabled in all
the contributed Perl scripts intended to be run as trigger scripts, but no
attempt has been made to ensure that they still run in taint mode. You will
most likely have to tweak the scripts in some way to make them run. Please
send any patches you find necessary back to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> so that we may
again ship fully enabled scripts in the future.

You should also make sure that any home-grown Perl scripts that you might
have installed as CVS triggers also have taint-checking enabled. This can be
done by adding `-T' on the scripts' #! lines. Please try running
`perldoc perlsec' if you would like more information on general Perl security
  and taint-checking.

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#297980: xserver-xfree86: X server crashes when compiling a program from gnat-gps

2005-04-27 Thread Ludovic Brenta <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
As noted previously, the X server does not crash, it exists
voluntarily. The cause for this is now known to be that gnat-gps
calls kill (-1, SIGINT) which kills the user's session.

See #297980 for more details.

Bug#269152: reduce the bug sevirity

2005-04-27 Thread Baruch Even
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Hi All,
Since there's a workaround, what do you think on reducing the sevirity of
this bug report. This will allow clumus 0.101-2 to get into sarge.
Since this is a real functionality issue and we want OOo to work out of
the box without the user needing anything special to do (including
installing another font package), I don't think this is appropriate.

Baruch - maybe a patch can be applied automatically using the postinst
script?
I cannot and should not touch the configuration files of OOo, this is in
the Debian policy, the files that need to be patched are not even in
/etc so they will be replaced on an upgrade/reinstall and I will not
have a chance to fix them again.

The real fix is to put the changes needed into the OOo package.
You are more than welcome asking the Debian OOo folks to adopt this fix.

Bug#306546: nscd/libc6: Assertion failed on login/su, any user

2005-04-27 Thread Marek Szuba
Package: nscd
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-21
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

My affected box is an AMD Sempron machine with a 2.6 kernel built
for K8 architecture. Having upgraded nscd to 2.3.2.ds1-20 (via
apt-get dist-upgrade) earlier this week I found myself unable
to log in locally or to use su. The error message is:

login: pthread_mutex_lock.c:78: __pthread_mutex_lock: Assertion
`mutex->__data.__owner == 0' failed.
Aborted

(for su substitute "login:" with "su:")

Logging in remotely via SSH works with no errors.

I had an identical problem last week with some Athlon 64 machines
running Debian-amd64 (pure64, testing), but executing apt-get
dist-upgrade on Monday (and thus upgrading libc6 and nscd to
2.3.2.ds1-21) solved the issue. Sadly, in case of the 32-bit box
the upgrade didn't help.

Also, I manage a number of other 32-bit machines with Intel processors,
ranging from i686 to Pentium 4, running exactly the same version of
Debian with the same version of the packages in question, but 2.4-branch
kernels, which have no such problems.

Remote exploitation of an integer overflow vulnerability
in the smbd daemon included in Samba 2.0.x, Samba 2.2.x,
and Samba 3.0.x prior to and including 3.0.9 could
allow an attacker to cause controllable heap corruption,
leading to execution of arbitrary commands with root
privileges.

Successful remote exploitation allows an attacker to
gain root privileges on a vulnerable system. In order
to exploit this vulnerability an attacker must possess
credentials that allow access to a share on the Samba server.
Unsuccessful exploitation attempts will cause the process
serving the request to crash with signal 11, and may leave
evidence of an attack in logs.

CAN-2004-1154 was fixed by the security team in the upload of 2.2.3a-14.2 to
security.debian.org, and the subsequent 2.2.3a-15 version available from
proposed-updates should definitively fix the problem and be included in the
next woody point release.

Nobody knows what to say to it :/

No, it is not fixed AFAIK and there were objections to the proposal
of changing the dependencies (e.g. by vorlon, IIRC)...

It's not that simple. The following list of installed packages is known
to give you the effect:
http://www.lichtenheld.de/debian/perlupdate.installed

Yeah, feel free to do that. And to reassign it to perl as doc-base
doesn't really have anything to do with the problem, it just points it
out...

Hello Loic,

Apparently the arm buildd set the $HOME variable to an incorrect value
and that break the build of openscenegraph due to the use of ccache.

This error only shows up if /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.a exists
and /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so does *not* exist. Since libGL.so is *also*
in xlibmesa-gl-dev, there are no build problems on a clean system.

with the following message:

I tried that and behold, the bug is fixed!

I agree that this fixes the symptoms and not the cause. However, that
will be the solution in Debian for the time being. The reasons are
(a) to keep the patch minimal, and (b) because the sources in CVS have
been refactored and reorganised quite heavily. Of course I will
submit the patch to the upstream authors.

FYI, the offending #ifdef pfa is still there in CVS, although the file
moved from gvd/gnat to common/gnat.

Also FYI, the upstream sources now use /dev/ptmx if available, and
fall back to a function called allocate_pty_the_old_fashioned_way
(sic) if this fails :)

Thank you for the invaluable help!

Right. I should use ccache only if asked for. I'll fix that in the

Before we suspect glibc, it's better to clear what actually causes
your problem. 2.3.2.ds1-20 and -21 do not have any nscd/NSS
modifications. The almost all code have been used over 1.5 years. So
I think it's your local environment/machine trouble rathar than glibc
issue.

You wrote you upgraded to the -20, but it's not the latest version.
Which version did you use without problem? Which version do you have
problem with? What packages did you upgrade with glibc at that time?
Please describe in detail.

I can't reproduce this problem here. (Amaya works fine.) Are you trying
to run it remotely? I remember having problems running it remotely, but
I thought they were font related. (This seems to be a problem in
XChangeGC.)

I'm going to downgrade the severity to normal for now, since it seems to
work on many people's systems. Anand Kumria is supposed to be the
maintainer, since Feburary, but he hasn't uploaded a new package yet -
so I'll take a look if I find some time this weekend.

Looks like jadetex problem #298437. What version of jadetex do you
have installed (or was trying to be installed with tetex)? You need at
least 3.13-4 to use tetex-3:

 jadetex (3.13-4) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Use e-tex instead of Knuth's TeX. This is needed for teTeX 3.0.
   (Closes: #298437).

definitely jadetex trying to create its format with Knuth's
tex. Jadetex is now at 3.16 in testing, I suggest you do apt-get
update and try again.

[I'm not the maintainer, just an interested user]

I guess tetex needs to conflict with old jadetex?

Bug#306607: kdebase-crypto: Package is not installable

2005-04-27 Thread Paolo Marzucco
Package: kdebase-crypto
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This package is not installable at all, since it's relative
to an old version of KDE (2.2), probably the same as in woody.

We miss kdebase-crypto for current KDE version in sarge.

Could you give us the contents of the files in /etc/texmf/fmt.d/ and
tell us which version of xmltex and jadetex you're using?

Bug#306617: statcvs: FTBFS: Missing Build-Depends on 'junit, libjdom-java'

2005-04-27 Thread Andreas Jochens
Package: statcvs

When building 'statcvs' in a clean 'unstable' chroot,
I get the following errors:

Please add the missing Build-Depends on 'junit, libjdom-java'
to debian/control.

Please also allow to build the package with j2sdk1.5-sun instead of
j2sdk1.4-sun since j2sdk1.4-sun is not available on some architectures
(e.g. amd64 and ppc64).

Bug#306620: ftp.debian.org: Please remove wxwidgets2.5, licence problems

2005-04-27 Thread Ron
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: serious
Justification: No permission to distribute

Hi,

The wxwidgets2.5 source package was due to be removed shortly
(in a slightly more orderly fashion) and replaced by the 2.6 release,
cf. #305300

Serious problems with the licence of some files in the 2.5.3.2 package
have since been found that can't wait for that and this package should
now be removed asap.

The wxwindows2.4-2.4.2.6 packages in testing are also subject to this,
though the 2.4.2.6.1 upload (see #306013), should push them out now as
soon as the buildd's catch up and well meaning idiots stop filing
duplicates of #305300 wrongly against the 2.4 packages.

This is going to mean yanking a bunch of dependent packages, but
none of these were slated for Sarge (and all of this should have
stayed in experimental if people didn't want ! x86 ports handed
to them prebuilt), and I'll take any heat from the maintainers of
those. Most should be pretty aware the switch to 2.6 was close
at a minimum.

I'm trying to get a viable replacement together for them now.

So, in summary:

Please remove the wxwidgets2.5 source package entirely.

wxwindows2.4-2.4.2.6.1 has the offending files removed and should
replace 2.4.2.6 without affecting any dependent packages. The m68k
buildd seems to be the biggest hurdle remaining for that now.

thanks,
Ron

Bug#305300: followup: this package cannot be distributed at all

2005-04-27 Thread Ron

Hi,

For anyone who is following, I've now sent this to ftp-admin for
action, since serious licence problems have been discovered, and
too many people can't tell the difference between it and something
eligible for Sarge.

We're very close to a 2.6 release candidate which will hopefully
be a more satisfactory replacement, I hope to have one uploaded
before long.

In the meantime, I trust you'll all expedite its passage through
NEW when it is by being _very_ polite to ftp-admin who once again
have had someone else's cock-up roll all the way to being their
problem. (and mine) ie. do not even think about whining to them
if your favorite package has disappeared and you are only just
reading this now. (or me, really)

Sorry to those of you you maintain a package that needed this.
I'll try to keep the down time as short as possible.

  Ron

Weird. My libGL.so is a broken symlink to libGL.so.1.2. And xlibmesa-gl is
supposed to provide that file. However:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -L xlibmesa-gl
[...]
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2
diverted by nvidia-glx to: /usr/X11R6/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa

My take is that nvidia-glx should divert the symlink too. I'm not sure how to
do that cleanly though.

Bug#306639: batik: FTBFS: JAVA_HOME_DIRS incorrect

2005-04-27 Thread Arnaud Vandyck
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi Andreas,

Thanks for your bug reports, but you have to know that you can't file
FTBFS bugs reports about packages that are in contrib and relay on
packages that are not in Debian to build!

The non-free JDK's are not officially supported so the packages built
with non-free jdk's are not meant to be built 'as is' (I mean without
modification).

I have no problem with wishlist bugs to ease the build of the package on
every arches (which is not needed because these packages are arch: all!)
but this is *not* serious bugs!

Any way, I leave all the bug you reported and will try to upload fixes
as soon as possible.

Thanks for the bug reports and many thanks for the patches.

Cheers,

It does divert it if you install nvidia-glx-dev. I'd close this bug

Bug#306666: kdelibs3-crypto: Package is not installable

2005-04-27 Thread Paolo Marzucco
Package: kdelibs3-crypto
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This package is not installable at all, since it's relative
to an old version of KDE (2.2), probably the same as in woody.

We miss kdelibs3-crypto for current KDE version in sarge.

I have tested with pbuilder today and have not been able to
reproduce the problem.

All the builds done by the build daemons have succeeded.

I am downgrading the bug report to normal.

Bug#230677: rc bug #230677 for package phpdoc

2005-04-27 Thread Lior Kaplan
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

What can be done for bug #230677? It was a year since an NMU was done
(march 2004). The problem is fixed.

But since it was fixed by the NMU, it's still open as RC bug, and the
package won't go to sarge.

I think the bug should be closed. What do you think?

Please CC me, I'm not listed.

In KDE 3, this functionality has been integrated into the main kdebase

No, bugs that are tagged "fixed" are excluded from consideration by the
testing scripts; and you should never close an NMU bug unless you're the
maintainer.

The reason phpdoc is not in testing is bug #282274.

Please provide the real version number here; there is no longer a
postfix-tls package in unstable.

Please give the complete error message you received. postfix-tls does
not depend on any mysql packages, so I don't believe that this is a
problem with that package.

Bug#306677: libc6: /lib64 goes away on upgrade, breaks amd64

2005-04-27 Thread Matt Taggart
Package: libc6
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-21
Severity: critical
Justification: causes amd64 systems to become completely unusable
  upon dist-upgrade

A person I know ran into a critical bug on amd64 today. He was apt-get
dist-upgrading his system things broke horribly,

...
Get:171 http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org sid/main telnet-ssl
0.17.24+0.1-7.1 [88.1kB]
Fetched 105MB in 2m42s (649kB/s)

Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database ... 24453 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace base-files 3.1.1.0.0.1.pure64 (using
.../base-files_3.1.2-0.0.1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement base-files ...
dpkg (subprocess): failed to exec rm for cleanup: No such file or directory
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess rm cleanup returned error exit status 2
Could not exec dpkg!
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (100)

and after that the existing shell was still working, but nothing would run,
always complaining "no such file or directory". dannf was able to figure out
that the /lib64 -> /lib symlink got deleted. All debian binary-amd64 binaries
have /lib64 in their hardcoded PI like this,

  $ strings /bin/ls |head -1
  /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

So that's why everything was complaining "no such file or directory". We were
able to replace the symlink using the PI directly,

   /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 ln -s /lib64 /lib

and then all things were back to normal.

I started looking around for how this could have happened. Both libc6 and
lsb-core provide /lib64. Looking at the lsb-core changelog,

  lsb (2.0-2) experimental; urgency=low
  ...
* Include /lib64 in the AMD64 package rather than running mkdir in the
postinst.
  ...
   -- Chris Lawrence <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mon, 20 Sep 2004 21:38:36 -0500

So lsb-core's old mkdir method was ensuring that that symlink got created and
stuck around. Once the package moved to delivering it as a normal file it can
be missing during an upgrade. So

I'm speculating that in this case all the packages that provide /lib64 were
providing it as a package file and being upgraded in the same pass. This
caused /lib64 to go away and everything to blow up. Does that sound correct?

I propose that libc6 is the correct package to ensure that /lib64 gets created
and exists across upgrades. Even if we do move to multiarch, /lib64 is going
to need to stick around for a very long time. If at some point in the distant
future we can finally get rid of it, whatever libc package we're using at that
point can check for it and remove it in a package script.

Hi,

The version in sarge is failing to build with the following
error:
configure: error: No sctplib installation found (/usr/lib/libsctp.a)!
make: *** [build] Error 1

There is no libsctp.a, but there is an libsctplib.a

The version in sid builds fine.

This bug can be closed when the version in sid reaches sarge.

Bug#305411: Let's only install what's built

2005-04-27 Thread Stephen Gran
Attached is a patch that only tries to install what's actually built.
You probably also want to build-depend on docbook-utils, as configure
looks for it and emits a warning if it's not found.

As I wrote in #301455, I plan to put the change to initrd-tools:

sed 's/\(.*=>\)\?[[:blank:]]*\(.*\)[[:blank:]]\+\((.*)\)/\2/;/^$/d'

It's just straightforward and small change.

I merged these two reports.

This change also fixes #279382, #292080, #295412, #295422, #297724,
and actual fix covered over the previous workaround e2fsprogs change.

Regards,

Tulip contains two non-free fonts, Luxi Sans Regular and Luxi Sans Bold:
tulip-2.0.0/library/tulip-ogl/bitmaps/font.ttf
tulip-2.0.0/library/tulip-ogl/bitmaps/fontb.ttf

These fonts should be removed. To get replacement fonts, you can depend
on ttf-bitstream-vera, ttf-freefont, or one of the other font packages
in Debian.
