Bug#316815: there is no i386-linux-g++

2005-07-03 Thread Drew Parsons
Package: lam4-dev
Version: 7.1.1-3.1
Severity: grave

mpiCC (and mpicc) no longer works, complaining:
-
The LAM/MPI wrapper compiler was unable to find the specified compiler
i386-linux-g++ in your PATH.

Note that this compiler was either specified at configure time or in
one of many possible environment variables. Please see the man page
for the LAM wrapper compilers for more information.
-

I think it's because gcc supplies i486-linux-g++ not i386-linux-g++.
mpiCC was working before the NMU 7.1.1-3.1 was made, but there have also
been gcc updates in the last week. I think Debian's ia32 gcc now defaults to
i486 not i386.

I'm not sure if the change is in the lam NMU or in the new gcc versions, but
I hope it will be easy for to fix.

Drew

Then something is wrong in your dselect state or your apt preferences. The
current version of request-tracker3.4 in testing is 3.4.2-4, and depends on
rt3.4-clients 3.4.2-4. The current version of request-tracker3 in testing
is 3.0.12-8 and depends on rt3-clients 3.0.12-8. This error message
indicates that dselect is trying (at least in part) to pull packages from
stable, and getting confused in the process. That's not a bug in either of
the packages that you filed bugs against, AFAICS.

Inconvenient dependencies are not a grave bug (especially in web application
packages, where they're de rigueur).  It is worth a bug report, however;
downgrading the bug reports accordingly.

This was a conffile present in the sarge version of request-tracker3 that
has been removed from the version of the package that's in etch. If this
file was removed in error, then this may qualify as a release-critical bug,
but the changelog strongly suggests otherwise:

request-tracker3 (3.0.12-8) unstable; urgency=high

  * Removed all mention of modperl2 support as the latest upload of
libapache2-mod-perl2 is incompatible with request-tracker3.

Thanks. I'll get to this ASAP. The dependency on a specific library version
is neccesary. Currently libjack is not guaranteing backwards binary
compatibility.

Bug#316796: request-tracker3: rt3 and rt3.4 dependencies broken

Which really sucks, a lot, because *I'm using Apache 2*.

Having installed the above, I discover that the file

/etc/request-tracker3/apache2-modperl2.conf

which was there last week is gone now!

I think something got very, very broken here.

I'm on testing, by the way.

Double checking - none found. Nothing under /usr/local/lib,
and /usr/lib/etheral/plugins is from the Debian package.

Also tried renaming ~/.ethereal to make it create a fresh configuration (in
case anything odd was defined there).

> 2. Check your hardware, RAM etc.
>apt-get install hwtools memtest86 memtest86+

This is the only app that is misbehaving, and this is my primary system
(desktop environment, mail client, web browser, games, etc.). I would think,
if it were a hardware issue, I would see problems with more than just one
program. Even programs with the same library dependencies as ethereal work.

Just to be sure, though, I booted into memtest86+, and let it run five full
passes of the standard tests. No errors were found.

If anyone's interested, the strace output (~ 285k) is available here:

http://aaube.nipl.net/ethereal.strace

Unless it shows something, I say just close the bug, and I'll take the issue
to debian-user (which I now sorely regret not doing in the first place).

Yes, the problem is that ghc 6.4 comes with Cabal, but it needs to be
removed for me to upload a new version of haskell-cabal, or
libghc6-cabal-dev will still be uninstallable.

Ian has indicated that he'll get around to removing cabal from ghc
when the transition to the new gcc is straightened out, probably a few
days. Then I can upload a new cabal, which will probably be the same
(upstream) version as this one, and hopefully very soon after I'll
upload an updated cabal.

peace,

  isaac

thanks

swt-gtk 3.0+3.1M4-3 builds successfully on ia64, hppa, alpha, s390 and
powerpc, but it failed to build on arm, sparc, and m68k. The package
is being built using gcj-3.3. The error message is...

package `java.lang'. Check the CLASSPATH environment variable and the
access to the archives

Could someone give me a hint on what's gone wrong here?

Thanks,

Bug#308667: License does not allow modifications, yet source code is modified

2005-07-03 Thread Golda Velez
Hi Shaun

Yes, Debian may redistribute binaries of glimpse built from modified source
code. Let me know if you need a formal license to that effect.

Thanks for bringing this up, and for maintaining a non-free archive! I have
considered asking the University of Arizona (which holds the permanent
license for glimpse) to GPL the software, and Udi Manber considered the same
possibility - it may happen for glimpse. Right now I spend a good portion of
my time developing Webglimpse, based on Glimpse, and would like to be able to
make a good portion of my income from selling that software.

If you have a few moments, take a look at

http://webglimpse.net/dev/ppl.html

my suggestion for an alternative route to open source for programmers who wish
to collaborate on non-free projects, that retains some of the benefits of
open source. I can't release glimpse this way either without asking the
UofA's permission, but its my preference for future projects and maybe for
glimpse.

And will definitely take a look at the bugfixes to roll them into the main
version, thanks!!Whoever contributed them can get resalable licenses in
exchange if they desire.

Best regards,

--G

Bug#308667: License does not allow modifications, yet source code is modified

2005-07-03 Thread Shaun Jackman
Hello Golda,

I maintain the Debian package of glimpse, and I've patched a few minor
bugs. Another Debian developer has raised the issue though that the
glimpse license doesn't explicitly allow distributing modified
versions of the software. May Debian redistribute binaries of glimpse
built from modified source code?

The Debian Free Software Guidelines state that "The license must
explicitly permit distribution of software built from modified source
code." It seems to me this must apply to software in the non-free
archive as well.

The modifications are minor bug fixes and can be seen here:
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/g/glimpse/glimpse_4.18.0-3.diff.gz

On a seperate note, have you considered licensing glimpse under an
Open Source Initiative license, such as the GPL?

Thanks,
Shaun

Hi,

Your package currently fails to build because you have
conflicting build dependencies: You build depend on slang1-dev
and aalib1-dev. aalib1-dev itself has a dependency on
libslang2-dev, which of course conflicts with slang1-dev.

Please change your build dependency from slang1-dev to
libslang2-dev.

Version: 2.2.7-1
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source

gimp explicitly build-depends on slang1-dev, even though its only use
of slang is indirect, via aalib. Now that aalib has migrated to slang
2, whose development package conflicts with slang 1's, gimp can no
longer simultaneously satisfy both build-dependencies.

As such, please drop the build-dependency on slang1-dev, which was
never necessary and is now actively problematic.

Thanks.

That's policy 10.7.2, for "if a package creates or uses configuration
files outside of /etc/, and it is not feasible to modify the package
to use /etc directly".

You aren't supposed to put links from /etc to things, was my
understanding. It's supposed to be the other way around...

> > my understanding is that they're in /etc since they're used during startup
> > when /usr/share is not mounted.

That can't be right! There's a reason that the ncurses-term components
/live in usr/share, not /usr/lib. If I put them in /lib someone else
will file a bug report about that. The closest we have to /share is,
historically, /etc.

That said I don't think the library even searches in /etc/terminfo
today. That's why ncurses-base includes symlinks from
/usr/share/terminfo to /etc for the essential terminfo descriptions.
But it would be nice if it did and ncurses nowadays has a configure
option to search multiple directories. So I plan to make a future
upload do this.

Ideally I could ship /etc/terminfo empty, have tic default to write
there, ship terminfo descriptions somewhere on /, and ncurses-term
continues to live in /usr/share. Is there anything more appropriate
then /lib?

Hi,

It looks like this hasn't been fixed yet. Now it fails with this
instead:
ld --shared -x \
  -o pam_poldi.so pam_poldi.o \
  ../common/libpoldi-common.a ../jnlib/libjnlib.a \
 ../libscd/libscd.a -lgcrypt -lgpg-error -lusb -lc

not be used w
hen making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
../jnlib/libjnlib.a: could not read symbols: Bad value

Note that all files ending up in a shared lib have to be build
using -fPIC, and those ending up in a static lib should not be
build with -fPIC.

Could I have that strace with '-s 1024' or similar, so that I can see
what the log messages were? In the trace you sent they're all cut off at

Please leave this bug in its current state. I'm sorry it's taken me so
long to get round to investigating it, but from experience I have reason
to suspect that it may well be valid and it certainly bears
non-statistical investigation. Greg, I need to see your
/etc/ssh/sshd_config in order to check this out.

I would ask that the discussion about statistical analysis of login
attempts please be taken to some different forum; while interesting, it
merely means that I have much more information to trawl through when
bringing myself up to speed on the bug, most of which is not really
relevant to whether or not a timing attack on sshd is possible.

Cheers,

Package: calamaris
Version: 2.99.1.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

1)
calamaris does not work any more. It ends with the message: "Couldn't load
package calamaris::calBars3d, maybe it is not installed: No such file or
directory" (invoked via /etc/cron.daily/calamaris).

/usr/share/perl5/calamaris/calBars3d.pm is in fact existing.

`bash -x /etc/cron.daily/calamaris` ends with:
+ case "$DAYDO" in
+ cat /var/log/squid/access.log
+ nice -39 /usr/bin/calamaris -a -f auto --config-file
/etc/calamaris/calamaris.conf -o forweekly.5 -F html,graph -H 'Squid on Guinan
- Daily' --output-path /var/www/calamaris --output-file daily.html
/usr/bin/calamaris: Couldn't load package calamaris::calBars3d,
maybe it is not installed: No such file or directory

$ perl -e 'foreach (@INC) {print "$_\n";}'
/etc/perl
/usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.7
/usr/local/share/perl/5.8.7
/usr/lib/perl5
/usr/share/perl5
/usr/lib/perl/5.8
/usr/share/perl/5.8
/usr/local/lib/site_perl
.

2)

Taking out ",graph" from /etc/cron.daily/calamaris temporarily fixes the
problem.

Looks like that's because of the jack transition, not the fault of the dbus
package.

Build fine on my sparc buildd before i did pbuilder update, afterward i got the
same error as the buildd's. That probably just needs some time to get resolved.

The error on your pbuilder is odd, as we depend on python2.3-pyrex. Will need
to check if that's a problem with the newer(?) python-pyrex package.

Good point, things like editors maybe essential in an environment where
/usr cannot be mounted. What about /lib/terminfo instead?

Eduard.

Bug#316725: header file exception.h needs to include stdarg.h

2005-07-03 Thread Marc Leeman
Package: libmagick6-dev
Version: 6:6.2.3.1-1
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Justification: no longer builds from source

Bug: #315503 against dvdauthor showed a problem with the newest
libmagick package.

the header file exception.h uses va_list without including stdarg.h.

Including stdarg.h solves the build problem from dvdauthor and is IMHO a
problem with the header of libmagick.

Please remove the nautilus-media package from Unstable due to bug
313557 which states that the needed library is no longer available in
Unstable. At this time, the package is unusable in Debian. Nautilus-media
has been superseded by Totem for some time now and it is Totem
that provides superior features with an active upstream team. An
alternatives facility was already in place before the filing of this bug
report and that facility defaults to Totem in all cases.

Bug#316093: ressource files should not be in etc

2005-07-03 Thread Eduard Bloch
Hello,

I think Bill has a good point here. Ressource files like compiled
terminal descriptions should not be in etc since hardly anyone edits
them. Instead, they should be moved to /usr/share and links from them to
/etc/terminfo/... should be created, so the local admin still has a
chance to modify the files, and on the other hands the packages can work
without worrying about conffiles issues.

Therefore, I suggest the following transition:

 - install the files into /usr/share/terminfo inside of the package
 - in postinst, do something like...

   (cd /usr/share ; find terminfo -type d) | (cd /etc ; xargs mkdir -p )
   for x in `cd /usr/share ; find terminfo -type f; find terminfo -type l` ; do
  if test -f /etc/$x ; then
if cmp /usr/share/$x /etc/$x ; then
  ln -sf /usr/share/$x /etc/$x
else
echo "/etc/$x modified by local administrator, keeping as-is"
fi
  else
ln -sf /usr/share/$x /etc/$x
  fi
   done

Regards,
Eduard.

Check two things:

1. Do you have self-compiled modules for ethereal, not part of
the Debian package? The ABI may have changed and that
would certainly lead to the observed behaviour.

2. Check your hardware, RAM etc.
   apt-get install hwtools memtest86 memtest86+

Cheers, WB

Package: heimdal
Severity: grave
Tags: security patch

Heimdal contains a remotely exploitable buffer overflow in the getterminaltype()
function. This has been fixed in the new upstream versions 0.6.5 and 0.7.0.
URL: http://www.pdc.kth.se/heimdal/advisory/2005-06-20/

I've extracted the security relevant fix from the 0.6.4->0.6.5 patch. If you are
planning more extensive changes for packaging 0.7 it might be a good idea to
release a fixed package for the 0.6 branch before that.

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#315065: Remotely exploitable buffer overflow in getterminaltype function

I have fixed this and uploaded to Debian unstable.

To the security team (which I have hopefully CCed):

This upload contains only the patch mentioned in this bug report.

It has been compiled with libraries in stable (pbuilder chroot), so it
should work on both stable and unstable.

What do I need to do to get a security release for the stable version?

2005-07-03 Thread Chung-chieh Shan
Package: subversion
Version: 1.2.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #316143

Unfortunately, I have exactly the same dependent package versions
(including libc6 2.3.2.ds1-22) as indicated in the original bug report,
yet I see the same problem (tested with a freshly created, local fsfs
repository).
