In other words, you probably had an incompatible version of libpoppler
installed (there used to be one in experimental that segfaulted with
pdfTeX, but it's long gone).

Except that this format is created on every single of the 6000
installations reported by popcon. Please reinstall tetex-base and try
again. If one of the tetex packages still fails to configure, please
send us /var/lib/texmf/web2c/cont-en.log.

Yes, as far as tetex-bin is concerned, since it causes a FTBFS error in
debian-reference. texlive isn't used by the autobuilders, so I guess
it's not RC, although I think we should really try to get a fix into
etch.

Thank you, no - currently I don't know whether there's a working patch.

This does not fix the bug. It is *never* permitted to rely on non-Essential
packages in postrm purge, whether or not you use a pre-depends.

Please instead fix the package to either call /usr/bin/update-gtk-immodules
on postrm remove instead of postrm purge, or check for the presence of
/usr/bin/update-gtk-immodules before calling it in postrm purge, whichever
is appropriate.

However autofs4 modules differ from Fedora4 or Debian, they should
present same protocol numbers and packet type numbers.

For a moment I still suspect it is module mismatch.

Bug#391828: should use $(CURDIR) instead of $(PWD) in debian/rules

Hi,

I saw the following from

Do you have any plans to upload a newer version of the package?
Now the bug is marked as release critical - it should be fixed.

Bug#399957: zope-cmfforum: Breaks "my folder" and probably other things

2006-11-22 Thread Antony Gelberg
Package: zope-cmfforum

Hi,

Simply having this package installed (on a clean Etch install) causes:

errors were:

Request made at

... when I try to access my folder. If this doesn't work, it probably
breaks lots of stuff. According to
http://www.contentmanagementsoftware.info/plone/CMFForum/ version 1.0.0
is out which may or may not fix the problem. I don't know - I'm going
to try ploneboard or plonegossip instead (sadly not in Debian yet).

Either way, please don't release this in Etch. It seems to be really
old-hat and things have moved on. Is the Debian Zope team active?
Could you use some help?

Antony

All is fixed, except indeed for the arithmetic error (division by

It seems so. :/
But I feel something's moving: another CJK user has reported a similar
problem at
http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-pdftex/2006-November/002539.html .

Han The Thanh has now provided a patch to let the number of VF grow
dynamically:
http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-pdftex/2006-November/002540.html
(patch is on Sarovar).

This could be the solution to the RC bug (third time's the charm?).

How strange. It shouldn't use "bkaiu" (which is the Unicode encoded
font) but "bkai". But the "bkai" fonts are all virtual fonts
redirecting glyphs to those of "bkaiu". Perhaps that's why mktexpk
complains about missing "bkaiu" files, but I wonder.

mktexpk shouldn't even be running, since all the fonts are already
provided as Type1 fonts.

test.tex is encoded in Big5, but all the Chinese characters are
replaced by code characters which aren't directly readable. Make sure
you haven't edited the file to include either CJKutf8, UTF8 or bkaiu.

Perhaps you could also try to run "mktexlsr, update-updmap,
updmap-sys" and see if kpathsea can find the Type1 fonts.

If you run test.tex with "latex", it should be fine. pdflatex should
fail with this arithmetic bug. The packages you need are:
latex-cjk-common, latex-cjk-chinese and
latex-cjk-chinese-arphic-bkai00mp.

If it still botches, I'll upload the original Big5 file.

@Jens:
latex-cjk-chinese-arphic-bkai00mp already provides the
tfm-arphic-bkai00mp. latex-cjk-chinese conflicts with
tfm-arphic-bkai00mp (<= 2.11.2-0.1).

Best regards

Bug#394648: Please explain POSIX thread issue?

2006-11-22 Thread Martin Foster

Hello,

We've done a bit of testing of bdb 4.5 on i386 using a backport of the
db4.5 package in sid. Seems to work well. The replication
functionality in 4.5 would be nice to have available in etch.

I can't find any references to the POSIX thread issue in
Oracle/Sleepycat's documentation. Could you please elaborate a bit, or
consider including db4.5 without necessarily rebuilding other
applications to link against it. As you know, bdb has a long history of
requiring a few years for each version to mature / get fully patched up.

Thanks,

-Martin Foster

There is a reason PAGE_SHIFT isn't being exported anymore -- it's not a
build-time constant for userspace, the value may vary between kernel builds
on a single architecture. Please use sysconf as Kyle has suggested; 394211
gives an example which may be applicable here.

Bug#399169: TorrentFlux Arbitrary Command Execution and Directory Traversal

As far as I can see, you only call htmlentities on the input. This is
not enough if you use the input in a command line that is passed to a
shell. For example the characters |;`$ have special meanings to the
shell and are not changed by htmlentities.

In fact, in the case we were discussing before (the kill parameter),
the new version will also only execute the kill command if $kill is a
numeric variable. So, if it wasn't fixed before then it will be now.

However, in the example above, the input is only passed to exec and
this does not seem to use a shell but executes the command directly.
So this doesn't seem to be exploitable here. On the other hand, there
are various exec()s of commands that are obviously meant to be
executed by a shell (with pipes or redirects). This doesn't really
make sense to me (but I am no php expert).

But I have found an instance where the input is passed to
shell_exec(). From metaInfo.php:

$result = shell_exec("cd " . $cfg["torrent_file_path"]."; " .
$cfg["pythonCmd"] . " -OO " . $cfg["btshowmetainfo
"]." \"".$torrent."\"");

Here the input ($torrent) is wrapped in double quotes which is not
enough since the shell will interpret `command` even inside double
quotes. You should use escapeshellarg() on this.

Although what you are saying makes sense to me, I cannot use it to
cause a command to be executed. I have tried many combinations of
inputs to the $torrent variable (including using `command`), and none
of them has been successful. I can't say why it seems to catch these,
but it seems to, so I will leave it at that. If you (or anyone else)
can create a case where this is a security issue, please submit it as
a new bug.

> None of these is very serious, as all require a registered user to
> exploit the hack.

While this is true, the average admin would not expect that any
registered user can execute arbitrary commands or delete files. So
this definitely should be fixed before etch release.

Definitely, I was just trying to calm people's fears about this being
a globally accessible hack. It will of course be treated seriously,
and fixed as soon as possible.

I think this is a beta2 bug which was fixed quite probably already before
the final vista release. Beta releases work the way you describe. They make
no sense so they get fixed.

I suppose you still only used ntfsresize, and no partitioning was involved,
which could indeed cause bootability problems.

Let's not speculate until we know what the final Vista does.

I still don't see why it should affect booting the _installer_. Is
reinstallation not the final (and in the case of Windows often the only)
option to get back to a working system after a partition was "damaged"?

It's possible that it checks the boot sector for changes, e.g. against
viruses, rootkits, etc. A few vital NTFS information __must__ be changed
there when the volume is resized. Perhaps these modifications are
interpreted as security risk so it silently refuses to boot.

Many people use ntfs-3g with Vista fine. And the code is the same, so the
reason must be something trivial, boot/security related issue.

Could you manage to get a final Vista or is this old the pre-Beta1?
I still didn't get any feedback.

2006-11-22 Thread Frans Pop

I've tried this in vmware. Apparently you should be able to use the Vista
installer's "Recovery Environment" [1] to run chkdsk.
Unfortunately it seems that the Vista installer dislikes what ntfsresize
has done so much that that also fails to boot! I am completely amazed
that an installer can fail to boot because of changes in a partition on
the harddisk, but M$ seems to have managed it.

I can still boot the installer (and access the recovery options) if I use
a snapshot for a "working" Vista, so it must be somehow related to the
resize.

I'll give it a try on "real" hardware as well, but unsure when I'll be
able to do that.

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#399888: xfsprogs: Multiple data-loss problems

John,

Take a deep breath. Please start a discussion with the maintainer
before attempting an NMU, its generally considered courteous to
give more than 45 mins notice (which was the time between this
bug and your NMU problem report).

These are actually all relatively minor problems, and have all been
there for a long time in xfsprogs.

The XFS experts do not hang out on debian-devel, so I'd take most
of those comments with a pinch of salt (except for the one that said
talk to the maintainer before attempting an NMU ;)

You've given no details. I can only guess that you're refering to
the dir2 corruption problem of 2.6.17.[0-7] - that particular problem
was resolved in 2.8.11 which was uploaded as soon as a fix was
available.

However, I'll look into doing an upload soon. Please do not do an NMU.
As you can see if you read the changelog more carefully, there has been
substantial work done on scaling xfs_repair since .11. Thats relatively
risky change, so I want to let it get some soak time before uploading.

thanks.

I don't find that at all surprising as it cost me a lot of hours to get
get the info collected, the issues identified and, in the case of
ntfsprogs, upstream convinced [1].

Yes, it is implemented in partman, not ntfs-resize. Partman now blocks
resizing of any partition containing the Vista OS (or rather: the files
that are used to boot Vista). It does not block resizing data partitions.

The upstream maintainer of ntfsprogs only recently was convinced that the
issue is real. He has said he wants to block resizing Vista partitions,
but I don't know if that has been implemented yet. It is certainly not
yet in Debian.
There is some uncertainty if the ntfsresize issue only affects Vista OS
partitions or if it also extends to (Vista) data partitions.

Note that I have also seen two recent reports about issues with corruption
of XP NTFS partitions (#394963), though that seems unrelated to resizing.

libparted causes the starting sector of the partition to change, thus
making the physical partition invalid. This bug is indeed not even
strictly related to Vista partitions, but other partitions seem to get
created aligned on cylinder boundaries by default (or we'd have seen a
lot more bug reports).

ntfsresize somehow causes an corruption of internal consistency (probably
some meta-data about the partition is saved somewhere and is not updated
after the resize) that is expected by the Vista bootloader.

There are a few reasons why I thought we could tag the libparted issue
etch-ignore:
1) it is not a regression from Sarge
2) there has been precious little attention to the issue from the
   maintainers of parted even though the BR was already 3 months old;
I talked to Otavio today though and he promised to start on it
3) the chance that people will resize a partition not aligned on a
cylinder boundary outside d-i seems pretty slim
4) it is not dataloss is the strict sense: you can recover by changing
the staring sector back to its old value (the trick is how to find
out what the old value was...)

Resizing a partition that is not on a cylinder boundary is scary anyway:
fdisk will also do the wrong thing unless you remember to change the
units it uses from cylinders to sectors (using its 'u' command).

I did check parted itself and that does the right thing as it asks for the
starting sector (IIRC). I have no idea about gparted and mindi.

If you feel the libparted bug should be fixed before the release, that is
perfectly fine by me. However, it really is an upstream issue and there
probably is a very good reason why that alignment check was originally
added. I would not want to just apply Bas' patch and hope for the best.

IMHO the bug reports are pretty clear. They all have the same origin: /me
having problems booting vista after resizing its NTFS partition, but have
diverged at some point to deal with the separate issues.

There is no actual bug in partman, but the two other bugs makes a
workaround there necessary until the other two issues are fixed, hence
the blocks.
It could be argued that partman should also check if a partition in an
msdos partition table is aligned on a cylinder boundary before allowing
to resize, but I feel the risk of that happening for non-Vista partitions
is small enough to ignore it (people should always backup their data
before resizing anyway, right?).
If someone would supply a patch for that I'd apply it though.

The BR against ntfsprogs has grown huge, mostly because it took a lot of

Path disclosure, hence not relevant to Debian.

Fully applies to sarge.

I'm away from now up to the end of the weekend, but will provide updated
packages right after that, if that's ok. Are there CVE id's available
for any of these?

That should be "2.9.0.3".

Bug#399329: Request to upload new upstream for phpMyAdmin (2.9.1.1)

2006-11-22 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Hi,

I'd like to request the approval of uploading a new upstream version of
phpMyAdmin, 2.9.1.1. I'm skipping one upstream version here (Debian
currently has 2.8.0.3) since I deliberately did not upload the newer
upstream without a pressing reason.

Now a couple of security issues have surfaced (#399329) which should of
course not be in Etch, and the newest upstream fixes them.

Why I think uploading this would be acceptable:
* The changes since the version in Debian are nearly all bug fixes, and
those that could be considered enhancements are non-invasive changes.
* This branch has gone through several upstream QA phases (release
candidates and the like) so has received wider testing already.
* I'll keep a close tab on any regressions that might surface.
* phpmyadmin does not have reverse dependencies.

Thanks,
Thijs

Bug#399169: TorrentFlux Arbitrary Command Execution and Directory Traversal

2006-11-22 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Hi Cameron,

thanks for looking into this. Unfortunately I think you are only
partially right. (On the other hand, I don't use torrentflux and
cannot install it ATM due to libphp-adodb brokenness, so I could be
wrong as well).

On Wednesday 22 November 2006 09:31, Cameron Dale wrote:

As far as I can see, you only call htmlentities on the input. This is
not enough if you use the input in a command line that is passed to a
shell. For example the characters |;`$ have special meanings to the
shell and are not changed by htmlentities.

But I have found an instance where the input is passed to
shell_exec(). From metaInfo.php:

$result = shell_exec("cd " . $cfg["torrent_file_path"]."; " .
$cfg["pythonCmd"] . " -OO " . $cfg["btshowmetainfo
"]." \"".$torrent."\"");

Here the input ($torrent) is wrapped in double quotes which is not
enough since the shell will interpret `command` even inside double
quotes. You should use escapeshellarg() on this.

> None of these is very serious, as all require a registered user to
> exploit the hack.

While this is true, the average admin would not expect that any
registered user can execute arbitrary commands or delete files. So
this definitely should be fixed before etch release.

Cheers,
Stefan

Bug#399892: nepenthes_0.2.0-1(hppa/experimental): FTBFS: tries to use static library compiled without -fPIC

If you really need to link a static version of a library into a shared
one, you need a version of that static library compiled with -fPIC.
I know of quite a few cases where the library package provides two versions
of the static library, one without PIC and one with. You could ask
the iptables maintainer if he would be able/willing to do that.
The only other way would be to include the iptables source code into
your packages source code and to compile the static library with PIC
yourself, but that is problematic e.g. for security updates.

I don't know what the best solution in your case would be. You should
probably ask that question on the debian-devel list or in the
#debian-devel IRC channel. I'm sure you will find someone there who
has more clue than me :)

This is the normal behaviour of the package since in sid python2.3 is no

So this is an RC bug on pygame: it should build-depend on python-pygame
instead of python2.3-pygame, python2.4-pygame.

Ok, I was too quick to input the problem to libkpathsea4

after using gdb and reinstall package libpoppler0c2, the problem
changed. It's now a problem with pdfetex...

> Please provide a backtrace of this segfault using gdb.

no more segfault, one library from "libpoppler0c2" was corrupt.

Now, it's perhaps a syntax error in
/usr/share/texmf-tetex/tex/context/base/context.tex
line 1116

Sorry for precipitation

I build with debuild, which should be using fakeroot. But if that gets
removed from a chroot or I forget to reinstall it after testing to
build with sudo then sudo will be used.

Bug#399892: nepenthes_0.2.0-1(hppa/experimental): FTBFS: tries to use static library compiled without -fPIC

Hi,

On 11/22/06, Frank Lichtenheld <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

(All this IIRC, libraries aren't really my strong point ;)

luciano already told me about that one,
http://lintian.debian.org/reports/Tshlib-with-non-pic-code.html

but:
http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt
 (f) Libraries

Shared libraries must be compiled with -fPIC, and normally static
libraries must not be. If you need to provide static libraries
compiled with -fPIC, call it "_pic.a".

Libraries must normally be compiled with -D_REENTRANT.

Shared libraries must normally be linked with all libraries they
use symbols from.

So, I'm not sure whats the debian way of resolving this, on the one
hand you need fPIC, on the other hand static libs should not use fpic.

Compiling libipq static before, and linking the static version would
do the trick, but I have no idea whats your policy on such hacks.

Markus

Package: ejabberd
Version: 1.1.2-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I'm using the same configuration that has been working for ages:
{auth_method, ldap}.
{ldap_servers, ["127.0.0.1"]}.% List of LDAP servers
{ldap_port, 389}.
{ldap_uidattr, "uid"}.% LDAP attribute that holds user ID
{ldap_base, "ou=<...>,dc=<...>,dc=<...>"}. % Search base of LDAP directory
{ldap_rootdn, "cn=<...>r,ou=<...>,dc=<...>,dc=<...>"}. % LDAP manager
{ldap_password, "<...>"}. % Password to LDAP manager

It looks like the ldap stuff was re-worked - so in case it makes any
difference, my passowrds in ldap are thusly:
userPassword: {crypt}$1$<...>

Now, whilst ldapsearch - using the exact same arguments works fine,
*NO* requests from ejabberd work (via web or jabber client) :(

wireshark makes it looks like ejabberd never completely talks to slapd -
I see a *whole* lot of bind-request and bind-response for *each* request...
whereas with ldapsearch it is much more one to one.

#su - ejabberd
$ldapsearch -x -h localhost -p 389 -D'<...>' -w <...> -b '<...>' uid=cowboy
...
userPassword:: <...>

I'm not sure. I will now try a rebuild of Debian Reference.

Please follow the dependency tree (suggested or recommended pckages) of
cjk-latex. You need(ed) at least a tfm* package.

Ignore this. I added this to enable language specific macros. As far as
I know only the German translation of the Debian Reference uses it to
correct bogus hyphenations:

The file LaTeXmacros.sty should not exist for other documents or
languages. And you know that \InputIfFileExists expands to nothing in
this case ...

Severity: serious
Justification: FTBFS

The gcin package FTBFS on five arches according to [1]. Among those
build failures, the ones on amd64 and powerpc seems to be triggered by a
braindead test in the configure script. The configure looks for /lib64/
at build time, and if it finds one, it will assume the system use
/lib64/ and /usr/lib64/ by default, and happily installs stuff there.
Then later when debian/rules tries to move the GTK IM module in
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/immodules/ and can't find anything there, the
build will fail.

1. http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?pkg=gcin

I've used the attached patch in Ubuntu, it seems to make gcin to build
on i386, amd64, powerpc, and ia64 [2]. (Strangely, the ia64 build for
Ubuntu doesn't experience the tsa2d32 segfault failure as it does in
Debian.) The sparc build in Ubuntu, as well as the ia64, sparc, and
hppa build in Debian, on the other hand, have a different FTBFS problem
caused by the tsa2d32 segfault mentioned above.

2. https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gcin/1.2.9-1ubuntu1

Please consider applying this patch to the Debian package.

Thanks,
Ming

Package: krb5
Version: 1.4.4-3
Severity: serious

Hi!

This bug has been filed on multiple packages, and general discussions
are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal or debian-devel in
the thread with Subject: "Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in source packages".

It seems this source package contains the following files from the
IETF under non-free license terms:

krb5-1.4.4/doc/krb5-protocol/rfc1510.txt
krb5-1.4.4/doc/kadmin/draft-ietf-cat-kerb-chg-password-02.txt

The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:
 * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation
 * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

The etch release policy says binary and source packages must each be free:
 * http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy:
 * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg

There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem. In order of
preference:

1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free
license. A template for this e-mail request can be found at
   http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging
the upstream archive and adding a 'dfsg' version name to it.

3. Move the package to non-free.

I went over many packages looking for names of likely non-free files,
and there may be false positives. If this is the case for your
package, I'm sorry for the noise. I'll modify the scripts to take
into account false positives when I learn of them, and publish the
list of exceptions under "Known exceptions" at
.

Thanks,
Simon

I think the "number of fonts is limited" thing deserves a separate bug.
If I'm not mistaken, most of the other issues with CJK are either fixed
in debian-reference or in debiandoc-sgml, but this one is not.

Ah, so for teTeX and TeXlive (which don't have pdftex.web, but change
files to tex.web instead) this would probably be the following patch:

However, if I'm not mistaken this does *not* set the limit higher, it
will just bail out with a decent error message, instead of - well, what?
I couldn't find it in the long conversation in this bug log.

Which fonts (or other things) do I need to have installed? With
latex-cjk-chinese-arphic-bkai00mp installed, I get lots of error
messages of the type

kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+264/600 --dpi 864

mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for bkaiu99.

And what about

Does that make a difference?

Right -- I tracked down the official word on this, which says:

"If your program is single-threaded and does not link to any
libraries that might have used shared_ptr in its default
configuration, you can #define the macro BOOST_SP_DISABLE_THREADS on a
project-wide basis to switch to ordinary non-atomic reference count
updates.

"(Defining BOOST_SP_DISABLE_THREADS in some, but not all, translation
units is technically a violation of the One Definition Rule and
undefined behavior. Nevertheless, the implementation attempts to do
its best to accommodate the request to use non-atomic updates in those
translation units. No guarantees, though.)"

So basically, if a program uses boost::shared_ptr, and also uses
libraries that use boost::shared_ptr (including other boost
libraries), then your program and those libraries must be compiled
with the same BOOST_SP_DISABLE_THREADS setting. Unless you get lucky.
(I guess it failing on less popular platforms in particular has
something to do with the workarounds they mention in the second
paragraph?)

That sounds correct. I suspect the reason _SP_ is split off as its
own thing is exactly this...

really know why this isn't working. Since I'm almost out of time for
today, I may not get this NMU done and would invite anyone else to
instead.

Sorry, an error occured while preparing the bug report.
The subject and the link at the end both need a s/sparc/hppa/
So the correct link is
http://experimental.ftbfs.de/build.php?&ver=0.5.0~rc1-1&pkg=ocsigen&arch=hppa

(The build error would probably also happen on sparc but it didn't build there
because of a missing build-dependency and so this log wouldn't
be helpful at all)

Bug#399892: nepenthes_0.2.0-1(hppa/experimental): FTBFS: tries to use static library compiled without -fPIC

2006-11-22 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
Package: nepenthes
Version: 0.2.0-1
Severity: serious

Hi,

your package failed to build from source. Apparently because you
tried to include a static library into a dynamic one. To do this
you need a version of the static library compiled with -fPIC.
(All this IIRC, libraries aren't really my strong point ;)

Bug#399790: trivial patch for amanda purge problems attached.

2006-11-22 Thread Andreas Henriksson
amanda can not rely on deluser being available during postrm purge since
it's the adduser package is not essential.

The attached patch should fix the problem by safeguarding the calls to
deluser in postrm purge.

Someone should probably look closer at this though to make sure amanda
properly cleans up on purge.

Trivial patch attached.

I think this should include the boost maintainer, there has to be some way
to safely select the proper compile flags. At least the Debian packages
provide a threaded and non-threaded version, but the .so link points to
the threaded version by default.
If both versions are supposed to be usable equally for non-threaded
application it suggest a bug in boost...
Anyway, until there is some mechanism to select this safely, it's probably
better to compile the application with the same flags as the library was.

I'll probably make an upload today. So, to be sure, I'm going to
remove -DBOOST_SP_DISABLE_THREADS, but leave -DBOOST_DISABLE_THREADS?
Is that correct, or are both defines to be removed?

Thanks,
Shaun

Bug#399888: xfsprogs: Multiple data-loss problems

2006-11-22 Thread John Goerzen
Package: xfsprogs
Version: 2.8.11-1
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

This may be "only" grave instead of critical, but it looks to me like it
is a Big Deal and unquestionably RC in any case.

Since 2.8.11's release, numerous xfsprogs problems have been fixed.
Here are a few excerpts from the 2.8.16 changelog:

- Fix up an endian problem for nlink setting in phase 7 for xfs_repair.

- Fix up nlink checks and repairs in phase 7 for xfs_repair.

- Fix up the ring command in xfs_db,
  thanks to Utako Kusaka

- Fix up xfs_copy and its variable argument handling
around vfprintf; xfs_copy was seg faulting on x86_64.

- Fix v2 directory checking with holes and unreadable blocks.
- Fix a memory leak in dir2 checking.

Some discussion about this has already occured on debian-devel:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/11/msg00629.html
support for filing a grave bug

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/11/msg00630.html
mentions that the latest versions contain fixes for kernel bugs

I *personally* encountered trouble today, which looks like remnants from
when I was running a kernel before 2.6.18. I will likely prepare an NMU
for this in short order.

If I understood the discussion on the pdftex list correctly, then there
were multiple issues, and we don't have a fix for all of them.
Do you know whether our problem actually has a patch? Is there a patch

Heh, I just had a reply prepared in my drafts. =)
There is indeed another patch, also provided by Taco Hoekwater:
http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-pdftex/2006-November/002522.html
(with a reply from Thanh Han The).

He suggests adding

  if vf_nf>font_max then
  overflow("virtual fonts",font_max);

right after vf_nf (twice) in pdftex.web.

I don't have the source, so if you could test pdflatex with test.tex?
You can find it here:
http://users.edpnet.be/vanmeel/test.tex

Thanks

一闋聲長聽不盡,輕舟短楫去如飛。
