Bug#403278: Can the work-around be made automatic?

2006-12-25 Thread Enrico Zini
Hello,

I'm not very happy about this bug being closed: I was unlucky enough to
install 0.3.0r2-1, and now even if I try to upgrade to 0.3.0r2-2 it
still fails, and trashes the entire apt-get session.

I'm happy to see a work-around posted in this bug report, but if
possible, the work-around should really be implemented in the maintainer
scripts.

Ciao,

Enrico

You shouldn't do this. Never boot a different kernel then the one you
suspended with. Unless you know what you're doing of course, in which
case you would have invalidated the image yourself.
Maybe we need bigger warnings about that.

This is pretty hard to do, without all sorts of assumptions.

I don't agree with you here. This scenario is not likely (impossible)
to occur if you just install uswsusp and the debian kernels.
FWIW, this problem is shared between all three suspend implementations,
also the (non-uswsusp) in kernel one.

I do agree it would be nice to have a script in the boot-up sequence that
would invalidate a suspended image. The hibernate package has a script
that does just that. Maybe I should copy it to here to,

Bug#404471: wacom-kernel-source: cannot build/install using m-a or adept

2006-12-25 Thread Thomas Hühn
Package: wacom-kernel-source
Version: 0.7.4.1-5
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

Hi

I'd like to get wacom-kernel-source building.

When I do a "m-a auto-build wacom" I see the ncurses dialog
"Build of the package wacom-kernel-source failed! How do you
wish to proceed?", but "VIEW" doesn't show a build log, so I exit.

Then I try installing the package wacom-kernel-source in adept:

/var/lib/dpkg/info/wacom-kernel-source.postinst: line 49: [: too many
arguments
Warning: kernel headers don't match running Linux version.
Building wacom modules for Linux _CODE 13262 (this may take a few
minutes)...

and it exits the installation.

I have linux-image-2.6-686 and linux-image-2.6.18-3-686
installed, as well as linux-headers-2.6-686,
linux-headers-2.6.18-3 and linux-headers-2.6.18-3-686.

That should be okay, shouldn't it?

Sometimes an installation process invokes emacsen-install scripts

invoked repeatedly.

To reproduce:

cp: `yc.el' and `/usr/share/emacs21/site-lisp/yc-el/yc.el' are the same file

The cause of this problem is that *.el symlink exists before *.el
file is copied.

to the version in sarge made the import work flawlessly, so this must be

Bug#370186: Improved test program

Hi,
attached the next version of halTest.

halTest does support a more complex test pattern .

>From my point of view the spin problem is not caused by hal as halTest

Under gnome the cdrom gets automounted, the drive spins down.
I have not tested extesivly under kde since i am not sure if my kde env.
is correctly set up - kde has not automounted the drive.

Hi there, Marco

After investigating a bit, I found that, at line 141 in
/var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.postinst

- mkdir -p $TEMPDEV/.udev/db/ $TEMPDEV/.udev/queue/
+ mkdir -p $TEMPDEV/.udev/db/ $TEMPDEV/.udev/queue/ $TEMPDEV/.static/dev/

fixed my problem.

Thanks!

Bug#404471: Is wacom-kernel-source really needed?

2006-12-25 Thread Andreas Henriksson
It seems like the wacom kernel parts are available in the mainline linux
kernel since version 2.6.11, and the debian 2.6.18 kernel seems to have
it compiled as a module.

$ grep WACOM /boot/config-2.6.18-3-amd64
CONFIG_USB_WACOM=m

Are you sure you really need to build them yourself?
I think the wacom-kernel-source package should simply be removed.

It would be great if you could verify that the modules provided by the
debian kernel works for you...

(The problem analysis of why the build fails: include/linux/version.h
used to have UTS_RELESE defined on the first row up until 2.6.10, but
this changed in 2.6.11 and the postinst script never checked what was on
the first row. It just expected a the version number to start on the
first row from char 22 and on...)

Yes.

I did, a milion times!

Why do you not look at the patch I provided?
It solves the issue!

No, it hides your symptom.
The real issue which I had overlooked in your first message is that the
static /dev on your system has a /dev/.static/ directory. This is wrong
and broken, but you can just rm -rf it (BEWARE: do this ONLY if udev has
not been installed, or you will delete the underlying /dev).
The correct fix is to mkdir -p the target directory of the symlink in
the while loop, but it's not really urgent since this condition does not
naturally occours on normal systems.

Bug#404484: gcompris: FTBFS on ia64 - needs build-dep on libasound2-dev

2006-12-25 Thread Christian Hammers
Package: gcompris
Version: 8.2.2-1
Severity: serious
Justification: FTBFS

Hello

The package fails to build on ia64 according to the build log[1].
The missing file is in libasound2-dev so maybe a new build-dependency
will fix it.

bye,

Bug#404486: Subject: linux-image-2.6.18-3-686: strange problems with filesystem

2006-12-25 Thread Hendrik Naumann
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-686
Version: 2.6.18-7
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

*** Please type your report below this line ***

After booting the system the root filesystem (ext3 located on a
logical volume) contained several files that gave I/O errors. The
system made a normal shutdown before.

$ls -la /lib/modules/2.6.18-3-686/nvidia/
insgesamt 0

This file was the first I detected because X was not starting anymore. A

 revealed several other files.

After an fsck of the filesystem (which ended without errors)
everything at the next boot.

I would not report this if this were the first issue with the 2.6.18 linux
image. But this is the best documented case. One week ago the filesystem
was checked on bootup and found corrupt (which very rarely happens to me).
After manually starting fsck and rebooting similar symptoms (I/O
errors) occurred. I had to do second fsck run (always from an other
root partition) which again correct errors. After that run the files that
had I/O errors were gone. I reinstall the packages that contained them.

Subject: uses HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR for authentication (and other security holes)
Package: chetcpasswd

chetpasswd uses the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR for authentication purposes:

   if(getenv("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR"))
  sprintf(IP,"%s",getenv("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR"));
else sprintf(IP,"%s",getenv("REMOTE_ADDR"));

and then goes on to check IP against
/etc/chetcpasswd/chetcpasswd.allow.

Obviously, HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR is not a trusted variable, and can be
spoofed by any scriptkiddie who can read the man page of wget. Simply
spoofing it to 127.0.0.1 will give access to the password changing app
from any remote host.

Furthermore, this cgi script doesn't seem to implement any rate
limiting for the passwd checks, thereby allowing for a dictionary
attack via http. Also, it seems to give different a error message if
the user is not found then if the entered password is wrong, thereby
exposing the names of user accounts to external attackers.

There are also issues with the package not using pam, and its
circumventing of any checks the admin might have in place.

I really think this package needs a security audit.

Bug#404503: Wrong characters typed using dead keys

2006-12-25 Thread Pavel Vávra
Package: console-data
Version: 2:1.01-04
Severity: grave

Hi,
typing accented characters using dead keys doesn't work well for some
characters in linux console.
I use etch (from daily built netinst CD) with czech UTF-8 locales. When I try
typing accented characters directly via keys "234567890[;", letters
"ěščřžýáíéúů" are displayed correctly. When I try to type characters like "Žť",
i.e. characters not present on czech keyboard, or characters "ščž" via dead key
+ letter, I get wrong UTF-8 character. When I try to type "áíý" via dead key +
letter, it returns right characters. It seems that characters from iso8859-1
are typed well and characters from iso8859-2 extension are typed by wrong way.

I save some example set of charactes to file and I discover following

hi,

both slang-slirp and slirp ship `/usr/bin/slirp' but do not conflict or add a
diversion, thus fail to be installed on the same environment:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/slirp_1%3a1.0.17-1_i386.deb

trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/slirp', which is also in package slang-slirp

Ok, given that this seems rather minor and Etch release is really close I
guess we should rather leave it like it is. Proper access control on this
level should rather be deployed with packet filters anyway.

Eh? and how did it manage to break unrelated software ?!?!

I tryed to upgrade with apt-get dist-upgrade

An indication of from whence you started would be of help here...

All things went wright, except sendmail, it's throwing this error:

Saving old /etc/mail/sendmail.cf as /etc/mail/sendmail.cf.old ...
start-stop-daemon: need at least one of --exec, --pidfile or --user
Try `start-stop-daemon --help' for more information.

Looks like it might need to depend on a fairly modern dpkg - but
we probably can't see what you were at, since dpkg was probably
upgraded after sendmail.

Can you apt-get --reinstall install sendmail-bin and see if it
now works ?

Package: check
Version: 0.9.4-2
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: renders package unusable

check uses "i" in the loop test macro, which breaks every use that uses
"i" locally. since "i" is the most ommon loop variable in C, it will
break in almost any case.

Bug#404503: Wrong characters typed using dead keys

2006-12-25 Thread Samuel Thibault
Reassign 404503 linux-2.6
Tags 404503 + i18n
Thanks

Hi,

This is not really a bug in console-data, but a design
limitation in the kernel. See kernel's dead keys handling at
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/keyboard.c:

if (accent_table[i].diacr == d && accent_table[i].base == ch)
return accent_table[i].result;

and the accent_table structure is
struct kbdiacr {
unsigned char diacr, base, result;
}
which is not unicode-aware, resulting to garbage in utf-8 mode for
non-latin1 characters...

For fixing this, a new ioctl has to be defined for providing a
unicode-based accent table.

Pavel, the short-term solution is to revert to an 8-bit locale :(

Bug#404503: Wrong characters typed using dead keys

2006-12-25 Thread Pavel Vávra
Hi,
thank you for your explanation. How short is the term you are talking about?
Is any chance that it will be fixed in stable etch? I cannot believe that I am
the first one who find this bug/feature. Does it men that etch will not be
ready to UTF-8 for non-Latin1 countries?

 P.

Bug#404503: Grave.

2006-12-25 Thread Pavel Vávra
Hi Filipus,
system become unusable, because there is a set of characters I cannot type on
my keyboard. This set is about 10-15% of Czech alphabet. I cannot write
comments to programs, notes to text files from linux console. I think that
grave is the right severity and it needs at least workaroud how to enable right
typing of accented characters.

Bug#404503: Wrong characters typed using dead keys

Hi,

Pavel Vávra, le Tue 26 Dec 2006 01:01:40 +0100, a écrit :
> thank you for your explanation. How short is the term you are talking about?

Someone has to write a patch, have it accepted upstream, published in a
new kernel, then the interface may be considered accepted, and the kbd
package be fixed for using it.

> Is any chance that it will be fixed in stable etch?

I don't think so.

> I cannot believe that I am the first one who find this bug/feature.

I'm not surprised. Not many people use the linux console nowadays (this
bug only affects the linux console, not X!). Even less people use the
linux console _and_ need non-latin1 chars.

> Does it men that etch will not be ready to UTF-8 for non-Latin1 countries?

It _is_ ready for UTF-8 for non-Latin1 countries concerning
gnome/kde/etc. desktops. But Linux kernel's console is not.

Actually, the linux console sucks for a lot of such utf-8-related
things, and not many people are really brave enough to tackle the issue,
considering how many people really use it nowadays.

Another approach would be to use a framebuffer xterm like bogl or
jfbterm.

There are other archs that have a few syscall oddities too, see other

Package: xen-3.0
Version: 3.0.3-0-2
Severity: serious

This source package is not binNMU safe, which I understand is an RC bug.

If the changelog, or any of several other files are changed, the build

Bug#404144: A small comment

It could probably be removed now (I haven't checked), but I'll leave
that to the maintainer. As well as actually killing of the line in
debian/rules, which I just commented out.
I only want to do minimal changes as I'm only fixing the immediate
problem, and in no way taking over the full maintainance work.

Bug#404471: Is wacom-kernel-source really needed?

2006-12-25 Thread Ron

Hi,

Andreas is correct in saying that most people with a recent kernel
version will not need this source package. The mainline driver has
been updated several times since this package came into being.

The linux-wacom source is only needed by a minority of users with
hardware that has had support added since the last mainline kernel
sync.

What we really need to do to make the the source package (more) useful
is update to the most recent upstream version. I've been erring on the
side of not doing that until the etch freeze is over, since the current
binary tools and X driver seem to be fairly reasonably release candidates,
and that is what most people seem to need from that for now.

How big an issue do other people see this bug? What should we do about
it for etch?

Cheers,
Ron
