Bug#405003: audacity: opens /dev/dsp without checking config file

2006-12-29 Thread Indraneel Majumdar
Package: audacity
Version: 1.2.4b-2.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

audacity tries to open /dev/dsp even though /dev/dsp2 is listed as
recording/playback device in ~/.audacity . Complains about error
initializing audio i/o layer and prevents playback/recording.

strace shows this:
open("/dev/dsp", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)

config file has:
PlaybackDevice=/dev/dsp2
RecordingDevice=/dev/dsp2

ln -s /dev/dsp2 /dev/dsp
solves this temporarily.

Can you give me more information about this bug?

I'm currently preparing a new upload of cryptsetup 1.0.4+svn22, which is
identical with the current upstream svn snapshot. does this version fix
bug #403426, or does it still occur?

Bug#403706: allow-hotplug and udev

2006-12-29 Thread Frans Pop
Late reply, sorry.

I'm not convinced this really is RC, especially not if the most severe
issue can be fixed in udev. For one, it is fairly easy to document and
fix by an admin based on that documentation.
It's only a real problem for remotely admined boxes, but you kind of do
expect admins of those to actually read errata and Release Notes.

Personally I would like it very much if we could be more conservative in
setting allow-hotplug. Use auto more for regular on-board or PCI NICs and
by default use allow-hotplug only for real removable devices (USB,
PCMCIA). However, detecting that seems problematic.

I can't really think of a solution that would allow to select hotplug/auto
that is not very ugly (except maybe for a boot parameter, but that
depends on people reading documentation again).

On Tuesday 19 December 2006 23:00, Joey Hess wrote:
> Another option would be to make netcfg always add an auto line, so it

> allow-hotplug eth0
> auto eth0

My first reaction on this solution was the same as MD's comment on IRC:
it's a hack and such a config is probably undefined. Setting this config
may, because of that, result in latent bugs in all systems installed
using d-i that could trigger at any time in the future by changes in
ifupdown or init scripts or whatever.

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#337284: invoke-rc.d nfs-user-server restart fails if service not running

2006-12-29 Thread Daniel Baumann
severity 337284 normal
thanks

Hi,

*iff* the stop) exits with a failure, start) shall not be executed
intentionally. note that stop) doesn't fail if the daemon was not
running previously, so there is a real error when stop) fails.

Nevertheless, the whole initscript is shitty anyway, and together with
the new upstream release, I'll change this post-etch.

Unrelated to that, this bug is, if ever, not more than of severity
normal, hence downgrading.

Regards,
Daniel

Bug#392096: bug 392096 - wink

2006-12-29 Thread Dumitrescu, Eduard
The creator of this package probably forgot to include libc5 to the package
dependency list. Someone should include it in there; I can't, as I don't know
how to do it (sorry). Also, someone could suggest the Wink developers to change
completely to libc6 (as libc6 is already in the dependencies).

From an upstream e-mail report --- start
When using fuse file system, kernel version 7, davfs2 crashed. But this is the
fuse version that will be included in the standard kernel of etch.

I believe the bug is serious and it is in 1.1.3 too. But it only shows when
using fuse. With the coda kernel file system there is no problem.

Hi!

I've run intop problems running Netbeans 5.5 under current KDE. After loading
of Netbeans 5.5, at
the first focus change (activate or deactvate the netbeans-window), kwin
crashes. See stacktrace
below.

I'm not sure if that's caused by kwin or the JVM (latest sun-java5-jdk
1.5.0-10-1 from sid), but
KWin is the first entry in the raised stacktrace.

TIA,
Michael.

Bug#337284: this bug/#337284: invoke-rc.d nfs-user-server restart fails if service not running

2006-12-29 Thread Justin Pryzby
Hello,

Can you still reproduce this bug with current versions of
nfs-user-server? If so, please add "set -x" as the second line of the
script, and determine which command causes the failure.

Thanks
Justin

Bug#400283: Needs new gst-plugins-good0.10 upstream

2006-12-29 Thread Paul van Tilburg
Hi!

It seems that Jokosher requires the new upstream release of
gst-plugins-good0.10 which contains the essential audiopanorama
element, see also the release notes[1].
I intented to reassign this bug to gst-plugins-good0.10, however that
would result in a RC bug for this package. Since Jokosher can't (or
shouldn't) make Etch in its current non-working state, I haven't
reassigned it.

I have Cced the GStreamer package maintainers though, with the purpose
to request a new upstream package soon.

Kind regards,
Paul

I have a Beige G3 "Gossamer", not a tower, but it's practically the
same.

I'd very much appreciate it if somebody else with a beige G3 would
try it and let me know if they see the same problem.

I noticed the same behaviour a few months ago. As I generally run
Window Maker/GNUstep on that machine, I just ignored that as I thought
there is something broken in my configuration. I'll try to find out
what's wrong, but that won't happen in the forthcoming weeks.

Apparently this has nothing to do with the installation CDs, as my
machine has been running Debian for ages. One thing you could do, as
a startup, is to attach gdb to that applet and see what's crashing
it. That might give you a clue where to investigate further.

Bug#392412: #392412: patch to move modules to /usr/lib/debug/

2006-12-29 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

The following patch changes debian/rules to install the modules in
/usr/lib/elfsh/ and updates the configure script and READMEs accordingly.
Basic testing looks ok (modload finds the modules without any problem).

Bug#404888: glib destabilization and ways forward

2006-12-29 Thread Thomas Bushnell BSG
Despite what Josselin has said, I can see no indication from a brief
perusal of the upstream branch sources in trac that upstream gnucash
either no longer uses these key files or has changed away from the keys
with embedded spaces.

I have asked gnucash upstream for their thoughts on the long-term issue,
but that doesn't address what Debian should do now.

It seems to me that there are four ways forward:

1) Decide that glib should not migrate into testing (it is a freeze,
after all); if there are particular fixes of RC issues in more recent
versions, then those fixes should be added, but otherwise the wholesale
importation of many changes should not be permitted.

2) Decide that glib can migrate into testing, with the particular change
of checking key values reverted to its pre-2.12.5 behavior, since this
is a destabilizing change in the Debian context.

3) Decide that glib can migrate into testing with the destabilizing
change intact, migrate an upstream gnucash fix into testing at the same
time.

4) Decide that glib can migrate into testing with the destabilizing
change intact, and gnucash does not, since the gnucash bug is only
severity important.

I have ranked these in the order I prefer them, of course. I apologize
if there are further options I have not listed.

Note that option (3) depends on upstream's ability to fix the problem
quickly, *and* is likely to be error prone. If our priority is the
*release*, then options (1) and (2) are the best choices.

Thomas

Package: mozilla-stumbleupon
Version: 2.8.9-3
Severity: serious

Hi,

the package iceape has moved its files to /usr/share/iceape/chrome - so
your package must not ship files at that location as well.

The probably simplest solution is to just move the directory before
building the debs.

Cheers,
Andi

What makes you say this? AFAICT, this is not so. At least, the
offending keys are still defined and used in, for example,
gnucash/src/gnome/gnc-plugin-page-register.c. Current gnucash trunk of
this file can be seen at
http://svn.gnucash.org/trac/browser/gnucash/trunk/src/gnome/gnc-plugin-page-register.c

Search for "Register Type", "Account Name", "Register Style", "Double
Line Mode".

What a ludicrous solution. I am going to assume (!) that upstream
gnucash will make a suitable automagic change (Josselin or somebody
already claimed that gnucash no longer writes these files; on what basis
was that claim made?) and then include that if necessary.

The problem affects all users of gnucash without exception.

Best, of course, is to decide that a freeze means a freeze, and so we
simply don't include a destabilizing upstream version of glib into the
*frozen* release.

Bug#402707: patch

2006-12-29 Thread Jason Lunz

The cause of this bug has been found; there's a proposed patch at:

From: Linus Torvalds <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Newsgroups: gmane.linux.kernel
Subject: Re: Ok, explained.. (was Re: [PATCH] mm: fix page_mkclean_one)

Who the hell am I kidding? I haven't been able to sleep right for the last
few days over this bug. It was really getting to me.

And putting on the thinking cap, there's actually a fairly simple an
nonintrusive patch. It still has a tiny tiny race (see the comment), but I
bet nobody can really hit it in real life anyway, and I know several ways
to fix it, so I'm not really _that_ worried about it.

The patch is mostly a comment. The "real" meat of it is actually just a
few lines.

Can anybody get corruption with this thing applied? It goes on top of
plain v2.6.20-rc2.

Linus

Bug#404235: segfault patch for 404235

2006-12-29 Thread Nico Golde
Hi,
the provided patch is actually not fixing the issue really.
I attached 2 patches for trr_update and trr_format which
should fix this.
Please test them before you upload the changes since I don't
use emacs and have no idea of the program.
But it would be a good idea to do a complete rewrite of the
code, its really ugly.
Kind regards
NIco

Hi,

docbook-xsl creates a "compatibility symlink" in postinst
 (/usr/share/sgml/docbook/stylesheet/xsl/nwalsh), but fails removing it
 in postrm.

 To reproduce:
 apt-get install docbook-xsl
 apt-get remove --purge docbook-xsl
Removing docbook-xsl ...
Purging configuration files for docbook-xsl ...
dpkg - warning: while removing docbook-xsl, directory
`/usr/share/sgml/docbook/stylesheet' not empty so not removed.

The dhclient hook should not be run if resolvconf is installed -
because otherwise the hook script might be run twice!

The Ubuntu script just silently stops Avahi. This is suboptimal, the
user should get some feedback about this. Notifications with the DBUS
notification-daemon would be a good thing. Unfortunately, that
daemon is solely a session daemon, i.e. it's service cannot be used
from a system script. :-(

An alternative would be syslog:

if test -x /usr/bin/logger ; then
   logger -p daemon.warning -t avahi <

Or something like that. Perhaps we should add a page to our avahi.org
wiki and explain the situation there and link it from that syslog
message.

Hi,
fixing this bug is really not enough. I had a quick look at
options.c file and its just bad. The whole configuration
parsing is buggy. No return values are checked (unset HOME
for example and call cdw), buffers are
written not regarding their size and stuff. The whole file
would need a rewrite.
Kind regards
Nico

Bug#403426: kernel corrupts LUKS partition header on arm

This particular change didn't make any difference. I still get the
header conversion message when I only apply the patch from utils.c.

Bug#404876:

2006-12-29 Thread Rick Thomas

On Dec 29, 2006, at 4:42 AM, Josselin Mouette wrote:

Well, nothing really useful here, except this confirms this is a

somewhere in the GStreamer stack. Reassigning.

@debian-powerpc: as it seem to render gstreamer completely useless

anyone

with powerpc knowledge has some time to find what is going wrong, that
would be very helpful.

Thanks for you help!

Is there a (set of) configuration parameter(s) I can fiddle with that
will disable (selected parts of) gstreamer? That might help to
narrow the scope of the question. As noted elsewhere, I'm an old-
fashioned command-line kinda guy and all this multi-media stuff is
just so much glitz as far as I'm concerned. So disabling the
troublesome parts (or the whole thing) is acceptable to me.
Especially if it lets me get on with other testing activities on the
OldWorld machine.

I'm (of course) willing and anxious to help get this thing debugged.
The machine in question is dedicated to Debian testing, so feel free
to ask me to try anything that you think might help in diagnosing the
problem.

in fact, one does not have to copy the manpages to debian/ in order to use
dh_installman, simply use dh_installman on upstream's pages (dh_installman
docs/man/manpage.1). If upstreams Makefile installs the manpages in the right
way i wouldnt mind at all and let the Makefile do the job (that depends on the
pov from the maintainer.)

In the step "detecting hard drives" a reproducible kernel panic
occurs (log follows below).

RC1 uses a 2.6.17 kernel. Not sure whether this is relevant in
this case, but according to the git commit logs there have been
changes to the SWARM IDE code in the Linux/MIPS tree with regard
to 2.6.17 and 2.6.18 in November/December 2006.

Bug#401569: Bug 401569 in democracyplayer is still present

2006-12-29 Thread Margarita Manterola

Hi!

On December 9th you uploaded a fixed version of democracyplayer. But
one of the patches in the changelog was not applied.

I'm certain that this was an involuntary mistake, and that you
intended to apply it.

So, would you please do the upload with the patch? If you are not
able to do it right now, I might do an NMU, so that the fixed version
gets into Etch, before the release.

Bug#404733: dpkg error upgrading iceweasel

2006-12-29 Thread Ben Hutchings
Well this is weird. The iceweasel package contains a symlink
/usr/lib/firefox -> iceweasel which I would expect to conflict with the
many plugins that install under the directory /usr/lib/firefox, as seen
here with totem-mozilla. However, on my etch system the upgrade
succeeded and /usr/lib/firefox remains a directory.

Bug#394214: patch for eciadsl

2006-12-29 Thread Brice Goglin
tag 394214 + patch
thanks

Hi,

What about the following patch? It gets page_size during open and stores
it in a global so that sysconf is not called in the fast path. I did not
find any better place than pusb_open (is there something like a
pusb_init routine defined in pusb-linux.c ?).

It builds fine on i386. I didn't have a chance to try building on
another arch so far. I also don't have the hardware to test .

Brice

Uh, right. I don't know what the debian policy says about this, but I
have the impression that "use debhelper" is usually recommended.

Perhaps those two lines needs to be removed, then?

Just for the record, I'm not the maintainer, I'm not even a DD. However,
I think this question needs to be posed to the maintainer, whom I hope
will tune in soon. I'll defer the patch meanwhile.

i think this happens due to upstreams Makefile in doc/man/Makefile is
also installing the manpages:

[..]

and later dh_installman from debian/rules continues installing them in the

Bug#394392: Alternative msync() fix for 2.6.18?

2006-12-29 Thread Martin Michlmayr
CCing linux-kernel since Hugh's patch might be of interest to
non-Debian people too. This message concerns a problem with msync()
in 2.6.17 and 2.6.18 that can be found with the LSB test suite.

I think it would make sense to have it in an -stable update because
it's a regression from 2.6.16 after all and it means that 2.6.17 and
2.6.18 are not LSB 3.1 compliant. However, I don't have a strong
opinion about it and I'm not sure another update for 2.6.18 is
planned.

Yes, I agree. I'm CCing the linux-mm list in hope that someone can
review your patch. In the meantime, I've asked the Debian LSB folks to
verify that your patch fixes the LSB problem.

From: Hugh Dickins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Fix 2.6.18 (or 2.6.17) sys_msync to report -ENOMEM as before when an
unmapped area falls within its range, and not to overshoot: to satisfy
LSB 3.1 tests and to fix Debian Bug#394392. Took the 2.6.19 sys_msync
as starting point (including its cleanup of repeated "current->mm"s),
reintroducing the msync_interval and balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited_nr
previously needed.

I'm CCing the debian-lsb list. Can someone please apply this patch to
2.6.18 and see whether the msync problem from #394392 is gone? I've
also applied it to our kernel SVN repository.

Package: drupal
Severity: grave

Drupal is currently orphaned and two major releases behind upstream.
It is regularly subject to vulnerabilities being actively exploited.

I've seen that there has been some interest in adopting it in June,
but nothing has materialised yet (also not in NEW).

The current state shouldn't ship with Etch in any case, that would
be irresponsible.

Cheers,
Moritz

hamlib shouldn't ship its internal version of libltdl, but rather use
the package libltdl3, if this is required at all.

try_dlopen in libltdl/ltdl.c there tries to dynamically open .la-files
to re-implement the dynamic linker platform-crosscompatible.

Bug#391404: upgrading severity

Something like that. Talking with a DD here, we found that in rules,
there are
dh_installman -pmodxslt-tools debian/modxslt-perror.1
debian/modxslt-parse.1
dh_installman -plibmodxslt0-dev debian/modxslt-config.1

which is indeed probably what we want. However, it doesn't work, because
dh_installman then stuffs it in the first package also, which is
libapache-modxslt.

He suggested trying with .manpages, I'm preparing a patch.

Bug#400918: downgrading to important

2006-12-29 Thread Andreas Barth
severity 400918 important
thanks

Hi,

after considering, I think this issue is "only" an important bug. I
still think it should be fixed prior to release of Etch, but - it
doesn't look like it happens on many computers, and we don't really know
what provokes it. So I don't think that we *must* fix it prior, but only
"it would be very very good", which is severity important.

Cheers,
Andi

Bug#404447: nfs-kernel-server: Transferred files get corrupted

2006-12-29 Thread Martin Michlmayr
retitle 404447 ixp4xx: open source network driver behavingly badly under load,
can cause corruption
severity 404447 important
thanks

Hi Ahmad,

I've tested various combinations now and I'm pretty sure this is a
problem with the open source Ethernet driver for the IXP4xx platform.
I've tested:

 - NFS on another ARM platform, namely IOP32x: it works fine.

 - 2.6.18-2 on NSLU2 to rule out the mm/msync patches: it works fine.

 - 2.6.17 on NSLU2 using the Intel Ethernet driver: it works fine.

In 2.6.18 we have switched to a different Ethernet driver. Various
people have experienced problems when transferring large amounts of
data with this driver, and given my tests I'm pretty sure that this is
what we're seeing in this case too. Some people have suggested that
setting

sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_wmem="4096 8092 8092"

helps. Unfortunately, I still see NFS problems so it doesn't
completely get rid of the problems.

The bottom line is that this is a known bug in the Ethernet driver.
I'll ask the author of that driver whether he looked into these
problems already. I hope this can be resolved in time for etch but
I'm not sure this will really happen. In any case, I'm downgrading
this bug because Debian itself doesn't include the microcode needed
for IXP4xx Ethernet, so this isn't a release critical bug for Debian.
However, I still hope we can find a solution.

Please open a new bug of severity important with your initial mail. The
problem you have is not dIMAP specific, it's general caching issue with kmail
(I sometimes get "No subject" mails on my local mailboxes after unclean kmail
kill/crash). Deleted mails on the server is just a side-effect. The bug[1]
has not been fixed since kde 3.0.9 (for 4 years already) so don't except it
too be fixed for etch. For now, avoid killing kmail.

This is very disappointing. I just lost eight e-mails completely from my
dIMAP account; they're just gone. Other people on the KDE bug tracker also
reported the "No Subject" e-mails in the same KDE bug report. Not only was
my local copy erased, but KMail erased the copy on the server as well. Were
it not for my forwarding e-mails to GMail before they land in my inbox, I'd
never see those e-mails again. There's absolutely no way to recover them.

So I just don't understand how you can claim the bug is fixed, when I just
experienced exactly what the bug reports: data loss with disconnected IMAP
account. Clearly, KMail's dIMAP account support is still not completely
trustworthy.

And how will opening a new bug report do any good? People who have an
interest in this problem are already subscribed to these bug reports.
Opening a new one will just make it that much less likely for them to find
out that the problem still exists.

Please reconsider your decision and reopen this bug. At the very least,
people need to be aware that the problem still exists.

P.S. Thank you for your suggestion, but /dev/input/mice does not use the
evdev driver. I think there is a way to configure udev to assign the same
eventX device every time, but I haven't been successful in doing so yet.

Bug#398058: [NFS] nhfsstone license

FWIW, the nfs-utils version currently in experimental (1:1.0.10-6~quilt.1)
now ships without nhfsstone, but the source is still in the upstream tarball.
Once 1.0.11 is out, I'll use that and this bug will be closed -- once etch
is out, whatever is in experimental will get uploaded to unstable (the
end changes in the binary package are minimal).

yes, please be sure to only ship the manpages where needed. As it stands
the following manpages are shipped:

libapache2-modxslt_2005072700-2_amd64.deb
 -rw-r--r-- root/root 903 2006-11-17 23:40
./usr/share/man/man1/modxslt-perror.1.gz
 -rw-r--r-- root/root 1648 2006-11-17 23:40
./usr/share/man/man1/modxslt-config.1.gz
 -rw-r--r-- root/root 964 2006-11-17 23:40
./usr/share/man/man1/modxslt-parse.1.gz
libmodxslt0-dev_2005072700-2_amd64.deb
 drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2006-11-17 23:40 ./usr/share/man/man1/
 -rw-r--r-- root/root 1648 2006-11-17 23:39
./usr/share/man/man1/modxslt-config.1.gz
modxslt-tools_2005072700-2_amd64.deb
 -rw-r--r-- root/root 903 2006-11-17 23:39
./usr/share/man/man1/modxslt-perror.1.gz
 -rw-r--r-- root/root 964 2006-11-17 23:39
./usr/share/man/man1/modxslt-parse.1.gz

i think shipping modxslt-perror.1.gz and modxslt-parse.1 within
libapache2-modxslt doesnt make much sense as those tools are only in the
modxslt-tools package. For modxslt-config.1.gz im not sure, it might make sense
to have a diversion here (or only ship it once, in libapache2-modxslt).

bye,
- michael

Bug#403426: kernel corrupts LUKS partition header on arm

Please try the version from subversion
http://luks.endorphin.org/svn/cryptsetup

I just kicked this conversion routine as it is for pre-1.0 releases
and guess there is no single deployment that will ever need it.

This won't change the bug itself, but it won't corrupt your partition
anymore. It just fails.

That looks right.

A good amount of staring out of the window, drew my attention to
(read|write|write_lseek)_blockwise in util.c.

Reading from a file description opened with O_DIRECT requires
blockwise reading into an aligned memory segments. That's the reason
for all the magic in these routines.

Looking at read_blockwise, r=read(fd,buf, size) might just return a
short read, that is rhttp://clemens.endorphin.org

Sorry Adam, we (KDE team) have been discussing this and we think this bug
is fixed. Since this bug was fixed in october only you has reported this
problem again. Also, after read your mail, it does not seem you have exactly
the same problem neither.
So, i'm closing the bug and you always can open a new one if you find out what
it is exaclty the problem.

P.S: btw, perhaps you could use /dev/input/mice instead?

Yeah, I think you're right, this is an RC-issue.

I'm not a DD, but modxslt is important to us, so I'm trying to help out.
All issues seems to have been with manpages, such as:

Does this imply that what is missing is debian/*.manpages files?

Bug#404927: additional information

2006-12-29 Thread Stefanos Harhalakis
It seems that this problem occurred between 27/12/2006 and 29/12/2006. The
only thing that changed was the kernel from 2.6.16-2-686-smp to 2.6.18-3-686.

If I remember correctly, tiger was not updated lately, so it would have
noticed this change:

Here are the last tiger reports:

-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-19 05:00 check_perms.out.10
-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-20 05:00 check_perms.out.9
-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-21 05:00 check_perms.out.8
-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-22 05:00 check_perms.out.7
-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-23 05:00 check_perms.out.6
-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-24 05:00 check_perms.out.5
-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-25 05:00 check_perms.out.4

-rw--- 1 root root 50 2006-12-27 05:00 check_perms.out.2
-rw--- 1 root root 382 2006-12-29 05:00 check_perms.out.1

(at 28 Dec, the machine was powered-off because of maintenance and there is
no tiger report)

nas:/var/log/tiger# cat check_perms.out.2

# Performing check of system file permissions...
nas:/var/log/tiger# cat check_perms.out.1

# Performing check of system file permissions...
