Bug#405900: swf-player: should be updated for iceape/iceweasel

 Package: swf-player

 Justification: renders package unusable

swf-player installs plugins into following directories:
 /usr/lib/mozilla-snapshot/plugins
 /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins

These directories are not used by iceape/iceweasel or even by
firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-2 which is currently in the testing.

In fact, the actual plugin file is installed in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/,
which is looked at by all of these packages.

On IRC, Ari Pollak suggested that the problem is that the plugin is linked
against xulrunner, causing library mismatches with the browser.

Bug#405529: Patch to remove DevFS code from drbd

 Thankyou Mr Bug Control Robot

 Here's a patch, culled from a diff between 0.7.21 and 0.7.22
and so hopefully able to sneak into Etch.

 I've compile-tested it, but I don't run drbd myself so I can't
confirm its operation... Happily it was pretty easy, upstream
just put a #define around all the devfs code and defaulted the
 define (NO_MORE_DEV_FS) to on.

Hi,

With your patch, drbd compile fine now, thanks. But currently I prefer
to don't test againts my production servers for obviously reasons. And I
can't reboot them easily :/ I'll try to take the time to perform 2 tests
servers. Thanks again.

Cheers,

Bug#406963: nbd-server: postinst script breaks custom server options

Debconf is not a registry. This type of thing really is advanced
configuration already, and I don't think it's horribly bad if it's
impossible to configure from debconf. Granted, the argument to the -l
parameter might be interesting to be configurable from debconf.

In any case, though, the 2.9 release (which is out upstream, but not
mature enough yet for inclusion in etch---that's lenny material) will
have its own configuration file format that I'll have to support, which
will require rewriting the debconf configuration anyway; so I won't
modify the way things work currently anymore.

I'm currently working on a new Debian release of nbd, which includes
your patch. Thanks!

Also note that 0.11-* version does not work with 2.6.18.* kernels.
Upstream developers are aware of the issue. So, I would just revert
your patch, reopen the bug, and wait for updated upstream because it
looks like eciadsl package is not ready for Etch (with 2.6.18 kernel)
 anyway.

For the record, we talked about this in private with Dmitry. He finally
got his modem to work by moving the initialization of page_size from
pusb_open() to pusb_open_endpoint(). He actually copied instead of
moving, but I'd say it does not really matter.

If it is confirmed that eciadsl does not work with 2.6.18 and there is
no easy way to make it work (does upstream have a patch?), I don't think
I will prepare a new NMU right now unless somebody wants me to do so.

Bug#407132: hal: Circumvents invoke-rc.d (and thus policy-rc.d) in postinst

2007-01-16 Thread Jonas Smedegaard
Package: hal
Version: 0.5.8.1-6
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 9.3.3.2

The hal postinst restarts a provided daemon directly, without consulting
policy-rc.d.

More detailed, it adds a subscript for dbus to maintain, force-reloads dbus and
then directly
restarts that specific subscript (probably to force-restart that sub-daemon but
no other
dbus-maintained daemons).

Debian Policy 9.3.3.2 states that package maintainer scripts must use
`invoke-rc.d' to invoke
the `/etc/init.d/*' initscripts, instead of calling them directly..

I can only interpret the dbus subscript as indirectly being part of the
`/etc/init.d/*'
initscripts.

I believe this to be a severe policy violation: Policy promises a policy-rc.d
setup to be in
control of which daemons are invoked on a system. Packaging scripts starting
system daemons by
invoking scripts meant to be chainloaded by init.d scripts defeats this.

I do not, however, believe this to be release critical: I would prefer Etch to
ship even with
this policy.violating bug, rather than without the hal package (which I also
suspect would
cripple/pullout Gnome and other major parts of the distribution).

But instead of playing bug severity games, please consult the release team to
get this bug
etch-ignore'd.

Kind regards,

Jonas

2007-01-16 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Loïc Minier,

Do you have fam or gamin installed? Could you restart fam or kill
  gamin if you do
I have been installing various programs and have noticed that gamin and
fam conflicts together, and cannot be installed on same system:

Package: gamin
Conflicts: fam

When I start gnome, this is started: /usr/lib/gamin/gamin_server

Nothing is enabled in /etc/gamin/gaminrc.

I have already tried using fam due to similar advice from #debian at
irc.debian.org and today I tried again and this is result:

I had to automatically remove:

gamin
libgamin-dev
libgamin0
python-gamin
sabayon

in order to get fam working. I have logged in as new user into new Gnome
session and following was running:

/usr/sbin/famd -T 0

and there were no menu items under Gnome Applications.

Further, I don't see how is this related, because menu items are not
generated in any other Gnome related menus (like under KDE, IceWm,

I generated core dump and made a stacktrace for your convenience. It
seems to me the problem is somewhere in glibc, isn't it?

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

2007-01-16 Thread Loïc Minier
 (Please Cc: 407033@, thanks!)

On Tue, Jan 16, 2007, Armando Romero wrote:
Do you know where is the Gnome applications menu saved?

It's built from various files, mostly from
 /usr/share/applications/*.desktop.

Which program is updating the Gnome applications?

Dropping a .desktop in /usr/share/applications is all it takes; however
some databases can be updated with some additional commands (such as
 MIME types) associations.

 update-menus does not fix it.

(This is for the Debian menu and completely unrelated.)

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

2007-01-16 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Loïc Minier,
You can try strace on the panel. You can also try creating a new user
to see whether it is affected by the problem in the default config.

I am not as skilled to use strace, however it is probably not panel
question but generation of menus. I am always trying out with new users
and clean configurations and also with present users.

Do you know where is the Gnome applications menu saved?

Which program is updating the Gnome applications?

I think it is in /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu but inside I see:

  LegacyDir/etc/X11/applnk/LegacyDir
  LegacyDir/usr/share/gnome/apps/LegacyDir

which are basically not present at all. The directory /etc/X11/applnk is
not existent. The directory /usr/share/gnome/apps/Applications contains
only two entries and /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu belongs to
package gnome-menus.

update-menus does not fix it.

Further I don't know if gnome-panel is really reading
/etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu

Do you have now some other idea?

Armando

I apologize for the duplicate bug report, it seems I did not dig deep

Keep up the great work.

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

Now I cannot use Gnome session from GDM login, because there are no
menus in the gnome panel. If I use Gnome section from the IceWm start
panel, there are also no Gnome menus. That means something was changed
from Sarge to Etch in such way that Gnome menus are not any more usable.
update-menus does not help to get Gnome applications menu.

Applications menu is empty. Desktop menu and Place are just usable as
normal, but there are no applications. Other applications like perlpanel
which usually was showing Gnome applications as well do not show any
 entries now.

The same happens if I create new user and log in the new Gnome session,
or if I use some other older user from Sarge.

I appreciate if someone could help me restore the Gnome applications.

Could you show the list of files you have in /etc/xdg/menus/ and in
~/.config/menus/ ?

Thanks,

that breaks and test a newer kernel (e.g. 2.6.20 or 2.6.19)?

Package: tenshi
Version: 0.4-2
Severity: important

If one rebuilds this package, as I'm trying to do right now to fix the
ignored bug report about debconf abuse, the rebuilt package is not operating
properly:

Starting log monitor: tenshi[ERROR] could not open directory
/etc/tenshi/includes-active: No such file or directory

This issue is very close to be RC, indeed, as it forbids any clean rebuild
of the package.

It is solved by creating a directory named includes-active in
debian/config-debian. However, please note that the current way to create
the config files is very suspicious as it uses cp -r which does not
guarantee a clean permission scheme for the installed files, depending on
the build environment.

I intend to upload a NMU in the next two days that will fix this issue as
well as remove the abusive debconf note (#357596).

I just uploaded a non-maintainer upload with the attached patch.

Please note that this NMu will not only fix the RC bug but also remove
the abusive debconf note and add LSB-formatted headers to the init
script (I checked that this would be accepted by the release managers).

- To facilitate the use of the program, we have split service-specific

Do we now have all of the udevinfo you need to enable a workaround
for this bug in udev? The bug report has at least one instance of

Bug#407188: Is it only the screen being black?

2007-01-16 Thread Enrico Zini
Hello,

In my laptop (Asus U5F) after resume the screen would stay black, but I
noticed that the computer was alive: I could ping it and ssh into it.

I then found out that the problem was that on resume, the screen
brightness had a very weird setting and would cause the screen light not
to turn on. There was no way of turning it on using the keyboard, but
it was possible using a script.

Ciao,

Enrico

Bug#402148: [Pkg-lyx-devel] Re: Source for latex-xft-fonts?

2007-01-16 Thread Per Olofsson
John Levon:
I've entirely forgotten how I did it, but it definitely involved some
manual fixing of the fonts. I used some popular open-source font editor,
which I've also forgotten, and I had to fix some stuff up if I remember
 rightly.

Perhaps fontforge?

I have no idea what sources they're looking for. It's like complaining
a .jpg doesn't have sources when it's a scanned in photo.

Not exactly, because these fonts have been generated from the original
font files. The thinking is that they have been compiled from the
originals. But I'm not sure that's really the case here.

If you had to fix up stuff, and have forgotten exactly how you
generated the fonts, then I think the ttf files actually qualify as
source as far as Debian is concerned. Debian's definition of source
code is preferred form of modification, which these files seem to
be.

One solution might be to add the missing families to Mozilla's TTF
fonts, and get them working with LyX?

I'm not familiar with these fonts so I can't say.

You probably used fontforge (formerly called PFAEdit IIRC).

No, it is rather like looking for the source of a jpeg that somebody
created by manually modifying another one. This cannot be automated
either.

To me the ttf fonts look like a derived work of the original pfb versions.
So, these could be considered as source, but the normal way of automated
building from source would not work, so it would be pointless. AFAIK the
original pfb fonts are under the LPPL, so I think the following would
work:

- The ttf files are considered as source technically.
- The README documents that they were converted from the .pfb files and
polished manually after that.
- The README documents where to get the .pfb files (required by the LPPL).

IANAL, but I see no reason why this would not work.

Does the caps lock key still work after resume?

Is this a regression from a previously working suspend?

case whether the volume was pre-existing or just created, as well as
for existing or newly created volume groups.

Since the non-graphical installer works as expected, it appears to be a
simple misconfigured button binding, albeit an unfortunate one.

Thanks for spotting this issue. There are actually two problems here.

The lvm component of partman was not really using the debconf protocol
correctly. This did not show up in the regular frontend, but it does
result in the behavior you saw in the graphical frontend.
I've fixed this in SVN.

The second problem _is_ in the graphical frontend. It turns out that the
value of a question is changed even if GoBack is selected. In this
respect it behaves different from the regular frontend.

The installed library information you provided the bug report doesn't
seem to be correct. Fvwm 1:2.5.18-2 depends on libfribidi0 = 0.10.7 in
etch, but you seem to have libfribidi 0.10.4-6 installed. I have
confirmed that BiDi support works correctly for Hebrew on an up-to-date

The hal postinst restarts a provided daemon directly, without consulting
 policy-rc.d.

More detailed, it adds a subscript for dbus to maintain, force-reloads dbus
and then directly restarts that specific subscript (probably to force-restart
that sub-daemon but no other dbus-maintained daemons).

Debian Policy 9.3.3.2 states that package maintainer scripts must use
`invoke-rc.d' to invoke the `/etc/init.d/*' initscripts, instead of calling
 them directly..

I can only interpret the dbus subscript as indirectly being part of the
 `/etc/init.d/*' initscripts.

Maybe, but is is _not_ managed by sysvinit but by the dbus init scripts, thus
it can't use invoke-rc.d. While i agree it's not as nice it coulde be, i don't
see a real solution untill we get an init system that properly supports events

This issue may a bit more subtle than this: the frontend may just be
setting a proper default for the question. However, this is still not
desired behavior when GoBack is used.

Bug#407188: Laptop gets stuck after sleep

2007-01-16 Thread Gad Kimmel

On Tue, 16 Jan 2007, Lo?c Minier wrote:

Does the caps lock key still work after resume?

Yes it does. After resume there is a screen switch to the outside monitor
(and this is the cause of the problem). It means that I can continue
working regularly, but the LCD screen is black. If I then connect to an
outside monitor everything is working there properly.

This would not be so terrible, as one can use the Fn+F7 to switch back to
the LCD screen. But it doesn't seem to work. That's another bug, though
not grave, but my feeling is that it's highly associated with the one I am

Bug#405874: gnat-glade-doc's version doesn't match gnat-glade

2007-01-16 Thread Ludovic Brenta
severity 405874 wishlist
thanks

Steve Langasek writes:
The question is whether the documentation is sufficiently
out-of-sync that it's better to let the user consult on-line docs
from upstream than to present them with inaccurate docs in Debian.
I don't know of any reason why this is the case here, but I don't
use gnat at all; Matthias is listed as an uploader, so presumably he
has a better idea than I do, so I'll defer to his judgement on
 whether this is RC.

I'm the maintainer and have assessed the changes in the documentation;
there are minor editorial changes and a few additions, but nothing
ground-breaking and certainly no risk of loss of life or data, or
breach of confidentiality. Downgrading to wishlist.

PS. The new version, not yet packaged, has

with the Invariant Sections being ``GNU Free Documentation License'', with the
 Front-Cover Texts being
``GLADE User's Guide / GNAT Library for Ada Distributed Environment'',
 and with no Back-Cover Texts.

Does that really qualify as non-free?

Removing the deprecacted users option made it installable but unusable
because mldonkey-server did not start.

Package: mldonkey-server
Version: 2.8.2-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I upgraded mldonkey-server package today. Package is broken because of
the newly included users2 option in users.ini. This option is
explicitly announced in changelog but seems not to be a valid option for
the mlnet release.

Since /etc/init.d/mldonkey-server dies silently as usual (may need a bug
report) I am forced to call the mlnet server directly from command
line:

MupoServer:/var/lib/mldonkey# sudo -u mldonkey /usr/bin/mlnet
2006/12/08 00:42:21 [cO] Starting MLDonkey 2.8.2 ...

2006/12/08 00:42:22 [DNS] Resolving [www.mldonkey.org] ...
Exception: Failure(Options: not a valid user) while handling
option:users2
  in users.ini
Aborting

THis is the content of users.ini file (snipping password md5 hash) :

users2 = [
[
admin;
]]

I did install mlnet as after a purge of previously installed
mldonkey-server files. Removing users2 by replacing it by the correct
mlnet option users resolve the problem. I did a quick search session
but I found nothing about users2 option.

Topic says it all, the only conversion MLdonkey does is
when a user in option users exists and not in users2.
This user, incl. password, is converted to users2.

Changes done by debian/utils/mldonkey_users to existing
users in option users are ignored when 2.8.2 comes out.
The new multiuser code is already used in current CVS.

Everytime I try to open an account register, GnuCash crashes with the dialog box

NMU'd with this 'solution' -- downgrading this bug and its sister one

solution IMHO trumps having nothing at all and hence no xlock in etch.

NMU patch attached.

Bug#373704: sort -k does not count fields the same as gnu sort

2007-01-16 Thread Frans Pop
On Saturday 13 January 2007 13:50, Frans Pop wrote:
It looks like sorting with a specific delimiter set is completely
broken. Tests were done inside Debian Installer.

I've tested the final patch by Goswin and can find no more issues or
differences with GNU sort.
In some cases the use of -s is required to obtain the same output, but
only in cases where the sort order is undetermined, which -s is exactly
intended to solve.

Attached is a final version of the sort testsuite script. It includes all
original tests (with some additional comments and minor changes) and a
series of new tests that better cover real use cases.
All tests now PASS using both GNU sort and Busybox sort after Goswin's
final patch has been applied.

Bug#407231: passwd: users may gain system group access on package installation by coincidence

2007-01-16 Thread Leonard Norrgård
Package: passwd
Version: 1:4.0.18.1-6
Severity: critical
Tags: security
Justification: root security hole

An ordinary user may end up with group ownership of system files
in the following scenario [2]:

 1. A user is added, and receives the user and group ids, name.
 2. Later, a package is installed that asks for an identically named
system group to be created, using 'addgroup --system name'.
 3. Addgroup returns with a success exit status, showing the message
'The group `name' already exists as a system group. Exiting.,
even though the pre-existing name group, as a group added for
a user has a non-system id (ie. outside the range 100-999 [1].
 4. The user name now has access to all system files that are
installed for the name group.

The problem occurs because in /usr/sbin/addgroup, the code on/after
line 247 to existing_group_ok fails to check for and handle
the situation where the existing GID is outside of the system GID
boundaries.

[1] http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s9.2.2)
[2] I discovered this while working on the packaging for kvm, which
will create a 'kvm' group, likely to collide with existing user
id:s on some systems.

Bug#404876: (no subject)

2007-01-16 Thread Jonathan Bastien-Filiatrault
Allright, I finished my iBook logic board upgrade, the laptop is now in
one piece for testing (as compared to all over the place when I wrote
this morning).

So I compiled a vanilla 2.6.19.2 with make-kpkg and reverted libvisual
to the official debian package. I have not been able to reproduce this
bug with this kernel. Should we reassign this bug to linux-source ?
Anyway, thanks for the help and keep up the great work, if I can help,
let me know.

---BeginMessage---
Package: thttpd
Version: 2.21b-11

The logrotate script packaged with thttpd-2.21b-11 allows a
malicious unprivileged user to start a temporarily disabled daemon.

/etc/logrotate.d/thttpd uses the file /tmp/start_thttpd as a flag
for remembering whether the daemon was running before logrotate and
therefore has to be restarted after rotating the log file. A malicious
user can create the file /tmp/start_thttpd manually.
The next time logrotate runs the thttpd daemon will be started,
even if the daemon had been temporarily stopped by the system
administrator for whatever reason by issuing /etc/init.d/thttpd stop
(and optionally rcconf, etc.)

I suggest moving the file into a directory for which a normal user has
no write permissions.

1) The cmd.php script does not properly restrict access to command line usage
and is installed in a web-accessible location.

Successful exploitation requires that register_argc_argv is enabled.

2) Input passed in the URL to cmd.php is not properly sanitised before being
used in SQL queries. This can be exploited to manipulate SQL queries by
injecting
arbitrary SQL code.

Successful exploitation requires that register_argc_argv is enabled.

3) The results from the SQL queries in 2) in cmd.php are not properly sanitised
before being used as shell commands. This can be exploited to inject arbitrary
shell commands.

The vulnerabilities are confirmed in version 0.8.6i. Other versions may also be
affected.

Solution:
Move the cmd.php script to a not web-accessible path, and update other
scripts accordingly.

Edit the source code to ensure that input is properly sanitised.

Bug#404818: CVE-2006-6799 (cacti) fix on its way to unstable, sarge fix available, etc

2007-01-16 Thread sean finney
another update:

i've tested the patch provided by upstream, and after grabbing an
additional patch from svn to fix a regression in this patch, things seem
to be good so i've uploaded it to unstable. thus a fix should be in
cacti version 0.8.6i-3.

as for stable, i've backported the patch and done some testing and i
believe everything should be good in version 0.8.6c-7sarge4, available
at:

http://people.debian.org/~seanius/cacti/sarge/cacti_0.8.6c-7sarge4_all.deb
http://people.debian.org/~seanius/cacti/sarge/cacti_0.8.6c-7sarge4.diff.gz
http://people.debian.org/~seanius/cacti/sarge/cacti_0.8.6c-7sarge4.dsc
http://people.debian.org/~seanius/cacti/sarge/cacti_0.8.6c-7sarge4_i386.changes

and for some text in the DSA, here's the text from mitre.org (with a
slight grammatical fix from yours truly):

---
A SQL injection vulnerability in Cacti 0.8.6i and earlier, when
register_argc_argv is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute
arbitrary SQL commands via the (1) second or (2) third arguments to
cmd.php. NOTE: this issue can be leveraged to execute arbitrary commands
since the SQL query results are later used in the polling_items array
and popen function.
---

security peeps: let me know if you need anything else from me.

So I compiled a vanilla 2.6.19.2 with make-kpkg and reverted libvisual

Anyway, thanks for the help and keep up the great work, if I can help,
 let me know.

That's very interesting new, thanks! Could you try 2.6.18 vanilla to
check whether this is caused by Debian specific patches or by an
 upstream kernel bug?

   Thanks,

It was interesting to test this kernel. Could you try a kernel from
the 2.6.20 series from the same host?

   Thanks!
