Installing a base Etch system (just the base, no X or fancy stuff),
migrating to Sid, and then apt-get installing xorg will install X
succesfully but will make it useless because of /etc/X11/X pointing
to /bin/true. GDM will fail showing an empty log. X will exit without
any output ('true' is not really verbose). xinit and startx will fail
with misterious errors like "server error" or "connection timed out".

Calling Xorg directly on the console works fine. The problem can be
fixed by linking /etc/X11/X to /usr/bin/Xorg.

Thanks for catching this, I missed it on my clean install tests. I'll be

Bug#453018: libapache2-mod-log-sql-dbi: Won't install because libdbi0 had not yet been pushed

2007-11-26 Thread James Cloos
> "Thomas" == Thomas Goirand <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

Thomas> Hey, how long exactly do you give me and my sponsor the

All I know is that I had a working apache that lost its ability to log
because apt upgraded mod-log-sql and, in so doing, deleted mod-log-sql-dbi
due to the lack of libdbi0 >= 0.8.2.

I'm just saying that the new version of mod-log-sql should not have been
uploaded until the new version of libdbi was known to be in the tree.

Thomas> The new libdbi and libdbi-drivers is ready for being sponsored

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/libdbi-drivers/libdbi-drivers_0.8.2-1-2.dsc

I'll grab and install those. Thanks for the pointer.

Thomas> Also, the old version of libdbi was anyway doing segfault, so it

My box wasn't having any problems with it. It was working fine.

Thomas> Please just be a little bit more patient, and DO NOT ask that my
Thomas> changes to libapache-mod-log-sql are reverted, this is a waste
Thomas> of time.

There was no info on packages.d.o as to how long before a working
combination would be available. And the change did break the package.
Had the new version been delayed until the dependency was known to be
in the tree there would have been no inconvenience

I hope my terseness didn't sound impolite; it certainly wan't meant
to be. My deb boxen are remote and I was writing across a rather low-
bandwidth ssh link.

Thank you for the URLs above and for the work done maintaining the package!
It is appreciated.

xinetd diverts inetd (as provided by openbsd-inetd or netkit-inetd), but
the default configuration does not read its configuration file
(-inetd_compat switch).

Thus any services in /etc/inetd.conf are just disabled without warning.

Hi,

please do not disable inetd (moving init.d/inetd to init.d/inetd.real)
without permission of the user. This will break all inetd based
services, which are at this time not manually merged to the new xinetd.conf
file.

Maybe some users want to use both internet daemons. Maybe because inetd
is better supported from the most packages, but xinetd support ip-adress
binding. So only one special service is activated through xinetd and all
other services using inetd.

After the installation inetd is stopped. I think this should only
happen, if the user merge the services and/or allow the postinst script
to disable inetd.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

Lucas Nussbaum has rebuiltthe whole archive three times on i386 and the
content of your packages builded there differ. This means that the package
which was generated on the fist build contains or doesn't contains several
files
which are or aren't included in the package which build two or three times.

See the report and the url for details:

Files in first .changes but not in second
-
/usr/share/doc/docbook2x/docbook2X/docbook2X.html

The full build-log can be found at:
http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2007/doublebuild-09-05/failed-debdiff

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems. All
packages have been rebuilt twice in a row, with unpack, build, clean,
build.

Please read the mail of Martin Zobel-Helas on debian-devel [0], for a
explanation
for this mass bug filling.

Greetings
Patrick Winnertz

Bug#453050: samba: security updated causes directory listings to be truncated

2007-11-26 Thread Aenoch Lynn
Exact same problem. A directory that on debian has 4958 files only shows
386 on Windows explorer. Also, programs that access network mounted
drives from this server now return with an error. This all worked
flawlessly prior to the -6etch7 security update. Downgrading to -6etch4
fixes the problems.

My kernel is self-compiled using 3ware's newest drivers for the 3w-9xxx
module. It is based on the kernel source package 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch4.

Is there any chance that you can test whether this is also a problem with
the 3.0.27a Samba package in unstable? The package can't be installed
directly on etch, so it would require a rebuild or a test on a system
running unstable (or an unstable chroot).

If you're not able to test just say so and I'll find the time to put
together a test case here; but if you are able, that would help us track
this down more quickly by telling me whether we need to refer this to
upstream, or seek out the change from 3.0.27a that was missed in the
security release.

Thanks,

The refocus plugin is now part of the gimp-plugin-registry package.
gimp-refocus is only a transitional package now. As refocus was not
shipped with Etch it should be removed from the archive.

Marcel, do you have contact with any of the other contributors? Or
possibly a CVS/RCS repository or an archive of all the versions from
1988 to 2003, from which the contributed patches could be extracted so
that they can be removed/rewritten?

I'm also concerned about the changes from 1986 that mention
bogart:/usr/alla/zap/ - I assume that is a different person from
bogart:/usr/alla/svante/ ?

Bug#453050: samba: security updated causes directory listings to be truncated

2007-11-26 Thread Stefan Schmieta
Package: samba
Version: 3.0.24-6etch7
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Upgrading to 3.0.24-6etch7 causes large directory listings to be
truncated using both smbclient and Windows explorer. We have several
directories that contain over 20,000 files each which worked flawlessly
before. With -etch7 only about 200 files are shown. Downgrading to
-etch4 resolved the problem.

Best,
  Stefan

What do you say Andrew?

I must admit that my conscience for the cfengine2-package is not the
best, but I have tried to fix and follow some of the issues the last
days. If noone steps up and wants to adopt the package, I'll give it a
few more shots before orphaning it.

Package: netselect-apt
Version: 0.3.ds1-10
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I noticed after installing a new version of Debian Etch that netselect-apt
fails with the message:

netselect was unable to find a mirror, this probably means that
you are behind a firewall and it is blocking traceroute.

It seems the Perl code within run_netselect() fails to parse the HTML of the
Debian worldwide mirror sites page at http://www.debian.org/mirror/mirrors_full
because that page no longer contains \n\n delimiters.

I resolved the problem by modifying run_netselect() to use "" instead
(highlighted):

run_netselect()
{
SEARCH="$1"
PROTO="$2"
netselect -v -s 1 $(cat "$infile" \
| perl -n -e '
$/="";
while(<>){
  next if $_ !~ /Site:/;
  if( m@'"$SEARCH"':.*@i ){
print("$1\n");
  }
}') \
| awk '{print $2}'
}

I also removed the check for Archive Architectures, since the phrase no longer
appears on the page. Perhaps this is needed, however?

I've attached a patch to this e-mail with the changes. I created it with the
following commands:

claude:~/tmp$ find old new
old
old/netselect-apt
new
new/netselect-apt

claude:~/tmp$ diff -Naur old new > netselect-apt.patch

Also, I noticed after patching netselect-apt that running netselect-apt
occassionally fails due to negative values for netselect field host->num_out,
but this is a bug for the netselect package, not netselect-apt .

Please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kevin

Bug#453018: libapache2-mod-log-sql-dbi: Won't install because libdbi0 had not yet been pushed

2007-11-26 Thread Thomas Goirand

Hey, how long exactly do you give me and my sponsor the possibility to
do this work?

The new libdbi and libdbi-drivers is ready for being sponsored (and I
decided to adopt the package as this was much needed):

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/libdbi/libdbi_0.8.2-3.dsc
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/libdbi-drivers/libdbi-drivers_0.8.2-1-2.dsc

there was a glitch with the debian/copyright which cause the package to
be rejected by the ftp-masters. That is now resolved, so I believe it
will take just one or 2 days more so that the new version of libdbi is
in SID.

Also, the old version of libdbi was anyway doing segfault, so it was
unusable. But that change we did on the control file of
libapache-mod-log-sql was needed because there are some ABI problems.

Please just be a little bit more patient, and DO NOT ask that my changes
to libapache-mod-log-sql are reverted, this is a waste of time.

Thomas

Version: 4.1.1-2
Severity: serious

The scilab_4.1.1-2_all.deb provides x86 binaries in
/usr/lib/scilab-4.1.2/macros/. The build system in that place
suggests the package should provide no binaries at all, as they
are supposed to get built at install time or later.

Bug#445020: edict & kanjidic: License discrepancy between the Debian package and upstream, upstream's license being non-free

2007-11-26 Thread Florian Ernst
Hi there,

first of all, many thanks to Noritada-san and Kinoshita-san for
bugreport and analysis.

Just for the record, currently I'm drafting a letter to upstream. I'm
going to ask for a retroactive license change/upgrade to CC by-sa 3.0,
so that this problem can hopefully be resolved for Etch as well.

However, I feel rather uncomfortable at this as I don't trust my ability
to express this correctly, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
Furthermore, spare time is a scarce resource at the moment, so please
don't hold your breath till I cough up something ...

Cheers,
Flo

Bug#452047: update-alternatives inconsistent with removing slaves during default switches

2007-11-26 Thread Manuel Prinz
block 452047 by 388313 220044
thanks

Hi,

this bug (as well as #220044) blocks us (Debian OpenMPI Maintainers) in
fixing RC bug #452047. We have a solution in our trunk but it's not
functional because the alternative links are not removed/deleted
correctly by u-a.

I'd like to help in providing a patch since I know Perl and started to
look at the u-a code already. From the two ways Marcin suggested, only
the first would work for us, so this is the one I'd go.

Do you prefer a patch via the BTS or to pull from my git repository that
has the changes?

Best regards
Manuel

Kghostview is unable to display any files with

In my opinion, this bug is similar to 448679 of gv,

You may fix this bug by updating the dependency of the package
in a similar manner as gv does, e.g. depending on

It's necessary for building with gdmflexiserver support (#436010)... I'm
trying right now to hack it, in the meanwhile, I don't know if this bug
should remain serious since I built this package in others pbuilders
without problems with gdm as build-depend...

Bug#447156: browser says Unable to bring up wimslogd Permission denied

2007-11-26 Thread Boud Roukema

On Mon, 22 Oct 2007, Georges Khaznadar wrote:

as user www-data, same command:

  cd /var/lib/wims/public_html/ && ./wims
outputs:

Status: 500 WIMS Internal Error

The command ./wims, in this context, should be executed with the
identity of the user wims, since the post-installation package is
supposed to set the permission bit as stated below:

salut Georges and the bug-tracker,

i found some more chmod commands sufficient to make wims work
sufficiently correctly for me to copy/paste old classes, do some
appropriate mkdir/chown/chmod/cp operations on them and satisfy students'
needs. :)

However, i suspect that the setup of user/group/suid and so on that i
have is not the one intended. Regarding the wims web-based management
functions, i'll reply independently to bug 447896 in order to not mess
up the bug tracking structure.

Here are the commands i found sufficient (in addition to my previous comments):

chmod g+rx public_html/scripts/adm/

chmod g+rx bin
chmod g+rx public_html/bin public_html/msg/

chmod g+rx public_html/bases/d[io]c public_html/bases/sheet/
public_html/bases/site/ public_html/bases/sys/

chmod g-x log/classes/.[hiw]*

chmod g+w tmp/forall/ tmp/sessions/

# This was needed since otherwise the exercises have key information in
italian!
chmod g+rx public_html/modules/adm/sheet.??/
chmod g+rx public_html/modules/adm/*

The group in each case is wims, which includes both wims and www-data.

i hope this helps. i guess for testing (sorry, i'm unlikely to have much
time on any short time scale, but at least i'd like my feedback here to be
available), the best solution would be to create a chroot jail and install
etch from scratch there, then test the installation from aptitude. i'm not
a debian developer, so i'm only guessing here what would be best.

As to whether or not the bug is closed, it's hard to say. For me personally,
the above and my previous list of chmod/chown commands are a hack, which is
not enough to close the bug. Maybe the bug severity could just be downgraded.

In a moment i'll reply to the other bug report.

Bug#452963: kvm: Don't include blobs

2007-11-26 Thread Soren Hansen
Package: kvm
Version: 53-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.1

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The orig.tar.gz you ship contains around 1 MB of various blobs. This
violates the LGPL under which most of them are released (you're shipping
binaries without accompanying source code) and it's also in violation of
the dfsg.

I've revived your old get-orig-source target from debian/rules and
extended it to remove the additional violating files, and also adding a
work around to make qemu's build system happy (patch attached, mostly
taken from qemu) and adding the proper dependencies to the kvm binary
package (bochsbios-qemu (new package, patch sent to Debian's bochs
maintainer), and vgabios) and putting symlinks in place, just like qemu
does it.

Bug#374062: why is this not RC?

Any text rendered using TTF_Render*_Solid which includes a
space character will fail. TTF_Render*_Shaded works, as does
blended, and those are most commonly used. So libsdl-ttf is
not unusable, but severely impaired.

I read somewhere (maybe the upstream bug report) that a
security fix caused the regression. However I've walked
back freetype6 versions as far as 2.1.7-5 and the bug is
still present.

Bug#451989: sleep 222; /etc/init.d/xdm stop won't

2007-11-26 Thread jidanni
By the way, I recall doing something like
# /etc/init.d/xdm start; sleep 222; /etc/init.d/xdm stop
doesn't stop the (certainly wedged by that time) monster.
On still has to hit the power button, (stopping the disks too, as I
don't know where the "reset" button is on my Thinkpad r50e.)

Bug#452679: [Pkg-tcltk-devel] Bug#452679: Bug#452679: tcl8.5: FTBFS: out of stack space (infinite loop?)

Unfortunately, disabling stack checking only hides the problem (it
then causes random segfaults when stack is overflowed)

We did some research over this bug with Miguel Sofer (who is
responsible for it in upstream development) and found that the problem
is in the following lines (in tclUnixThrd.c):

if (TclpPthreadGetAttrs(pthread_self(), &threadAttr) != 0) {
pthread_attr_destroy(&threadAttr);
return -1;
}

where TclpPthreadGetAttrs is defined as pthread_getattr_np.
pthread_getattr_np gives incorrect stack size for initial thread which
is used further and causes corruption.

So, I wouldn't like to upload a new version without stack checking.
I'd wait until Miguel fixes the bug in upstream.

Cheers!

Jay, did you get this? Please consider giving the package away to the

It would help me if you can send
a) the old configuration file, libpam-mount.conf
b) the PAM configuration of your login program, eg. /etc/pam.d/login

You can send this data directly to me (calvin at debian.org) if you don't want
it to be stored in the Debian bug tracker archive.

We are aware of this problem.

While he uploaded the package, Torsten said
"Note that this package has a (harmless) lintian error which has been
there for a long time and will be fixed together with upstream's next
major release. We should ignore that for the current version."

Yep, we will do that but this should be considered for the version 5.0
of Scilab since pretty much everything has changed in the compilation
process of Scilab.
