Bug#454557: libc6: before upgrade must uninstall libc6-i686 first
Package: libc6 Version: 2.7-3 Severity: grave The situation I got into was in process of upgrading libc6 and libc6-i686 from version 2.6.1-5 to 2.7-3. New libc6 was already unpacked and libc6-i686 was yet of old version. After that the system became totally unusable. Every exec ended up with sigsegv. Only removing /lib/i686 under another system's boot had helped. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Jos, I've been unable to make heads or tails of this issue, so I'd like you to try with the 2.4.0 package I've just rolled. I'm uploading it tonight, but I can send you an i386 deb out-of-band if you'd like to try before it hits the mirrors. Just let me know. Bug#454158: #454375 and #454158 are different issues, but both fixed (or rather can't be fixed - corner case)
On Wed, 2007-12-05 at 20:50 -0600, Ming Hua wrote: My chain of events: - Upgrade cli-common from 0.4.9 to 0.5.0, and libmono-addins{,-gui}2.0-cil from 0.2-4 to 0.3~svn.r90520-1. cli-common 0.5.0 does not fix the issue - Upgrade cli-common from 0.5.0 to 0.5.2. Doesn't doesnt help, as the problem is during package installation of libraries that use cli-common, thus = cli-common 0.5.1 needs to be installed and libraries using that needs to be re-installed, else it will have no effect at all (thats the corner case). - Tomboy still doesn't start. I don't think I've tried using tomboy between the two upgrade. As expected, the crash with partial upgrades looks different (System.IO.FileNotFoundException vs System.InvalidOperationException). My solution/workaround: Run dpkg-reconfigure on all three packages: libmono-addins2.0-cil, libmono-addins-gui2.0-cil, and tomboy. tomyboy doesn't need to be re-configured, libmono-addins0.2-cil _and_ libmono-addins-gui2.0-cil is sufficient. After that my tomboy runs normally. The full log of error messages is attached. I checked your log, and you reconfigured libmono-addins0.2-cil (but _not_ libmono-addins2.0-cil) and started tomboy (thats the partial upgrade as the policy file of one library is still msising) Then you got the System.InvalidOperationException, the corner case. Then you reconfigured libmono-addins-gui0.2-cil, which installs the 2. policy file, but doesn't solve the broken addin DB in ~/.tomboy, thus it still crashes till it become rebuild (which happens when it gets deleted). -- Regards, Mirco 'meebey' Bauer PGP-Key ID: 0xEEF946C8 FOSS Developer[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.meebey.net/ PEAR Developer[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://pear.php.net/ Debian Developer [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.debian.org/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Your message dated Thu, 06 Dec 2007 12:47:05 +0100 with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line fixed in 2.2.11-1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: libgmime-2.0-2 Version: 2.2.10-2 Severity: serious Tags: security Hi, on messages with malformed encoding of header values, g_mime_parser_construct_message does not return. This could be quite a bad deal as any application processing mail from untrusted sources (i.e. almost anything working on inbound mail) can be prevented to process other messages correctly (as in DOS). If, however, the security team concludes that this bug is not security relevant, please do remove the tag and lower the severity. Please find attached testcase.c and testcase.mbox. Upon compiling with gcc $(gmime-config --cflags --libs) testcase.c -o testcase and running ./testcase testcase.mbox reproduces the problem, which seems to rest with the nothing between the first two ?? in the subject's =??Q??=. I checked your log, and you reconfigured libmono-addins0.2-cil (but _not_ libmono-addins2.0-cil) Right, that's just a typo. and started tomboy (thats the partial upgrade as the policy file of one library is still msising) Then you got the System.InvalidOperationException, the corner case. Then you reconfigured libmono-addins-gui0.2-cil, which installs the 2. policy file, but doesn't solve the broken addin DB in ~/.tomboy, thus it still crashes till it become rebuild (which happens when it gets deleted). I never deleted anything in ~/.tomboy. After all the things I did in my log, tomboy can run normally. It maybe that the first running of tomboy deleted the DB, and the second run would succeed regardless tomboy is reconfigured or not. However, there are a lot of other possible ways to access repositories (e.g. git://, ssh://) which do not require curl. So there is no strict requirement for any Git user to install curl - that's why curl is only recommended by git-core rather than required. A recommendation is defined as a package that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations, which imho is exactly the case for curl here. If you do not install recommended packages automatically, you should have a look at the documentation if something fails. Bug#454609: cyrus-imapd-2.3: software compiled against libdb 4.5, linked against libdb 4.4
Package: cyrus-imapd-2.3 Version: 2.3.8-13 Severity: grave Tags: patch Justification: renders package unusable The configure script in the package is broken; it is supposed to find the most recent version of libdb but starts checking for version 4.4 which has been succeeded by 4.5 (which is actually a package dependency for cyrus-imapd-2.3). As a consequence the software fails to work issueing an error message to syslog more or less like compiled against libdb-4.5, linked against libdb-4.4. Thus the package is completely unusable. Bug#454624: gksu doesn't ask for a password and runs apps as root
Package: gksu Version: 2.0.0-5 Severity: critical Tags: security Justification: root security hole Hello, Since today, when I run gksu as a normal user (not root), it doesn't ask for the root password. An empty window opens. Nothing is written inside it, aside Do not show that message again (I'm translating the message to English for the bug report). I launched gksu from a shell, still from a normal user account : /usr/bin/gksu -u root /usr/sbin/synaptic The empty window opens, and here's what is written in the console : (gksu:6066): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Error on line 1 char 35: Invalid UTF-8 encoded text - not valid 'bbigPermissions accord\xe9es sans demande de mot de passe/big/b Le programme \xab\xa0/usr/sbin/synaptic\xa0\xbb a \xe9t\xe9 lanc\xe9 avec les privil\xe8ges de l'utilisateur root sans avoir eu \xe0 demander de mot de passe, en raison de la configuration du m\xe9canisme d'authentification de votre syst\xe8me. The strange \xyz chars are displayed in this bug report as they do appear in the console. What surprised me is that even if gksu doesn't ask for the root password, I'm actually able to use synaptic ! I mean not only browing the package, but install them, remove them, and so on. So, synaptic is ran from the root account ! So I did a test from a console : $ whoami normal_non_root_user $ su Mot de passe : # echo test xyz_test_file.txt # chmod 600 xyz_test_file.txt # ls -l xyz_test_file.txt -rw--- 1 root root 5 2007-12-06 18:39 xyz_test_file.txt # exit $ whoami normal_non_root_user $ /usr/bin/gksu -u root more xyz_test_file.txt (gksu:7336): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Error on line 1 char 35: Invalid UTF-8 encoded text - not valid 'bbigPermissions accord\xe9es sans demande de mot de passe/big/b Le programme \xab\xa0more apos;xyz_test_file.txtapos;\xa0\xbb a \xe9t\xe9 lanc\xe9 avec les privil\xe8ges de l'utilisateur root sans avoir eu \xe0 demander de mot de passe, en raison de la configuration du m\xe9canisme d'authentification de votre syst\xe8me. As regards to the password not requested, perhaps was it in cache ? gksu, when used with the su backend, will have checkboxes to make it remember the password for the whole session or to store it in the GNOME Keyring for good. You probably had the password stored for your session, and the screen that appeared blank was telling you just that: that gksu was going to run the program without asking for the password. We have a bug here, indeed: that translation has invalid characters, but as for the password caching, that seems to be working as intended =). Bug#454638: libc6 unusable on kernel 2.6.9 due to opendir/O_CLOEXEC problems
Package: libc6 Version: 2.7-3 Severity: grave Justification: renders system (mostly) unusable Hi, I upgraded libc6 to 2.7-3 using apt-get on a system running kernel 2.6.9 with SMP (unfortunately I don't have the option of changing this kernel, it's provided by my colo provider), and dpkg crashed with Unknown error 530. Subsequently, everything that scanned directories crashed with the same error (ls, dpkg, etc.). Eventually, I found out that the filesystem was still intact; I could cd into directories, and ls works on the current directory. My current shell (presumably still linked to the old shared lib) can still scan directories (`echo /path/name/*` works). Pathnames that referenced individual files also worked; but any new process besides my current shell that used opendir() crashed with the same error. Then I found this: http://www.nabble.com/-Bug-libc-5227--New:-opendir-and-O_CLOEXEC-problems-with-Linux-2.6.9-5.ELsmp-kernel-t4705183.html It seems that glibc 2.7 has problems with opendir() and O_CLOEXEC on kernel 2.6.9 with SMP enabled. Downgrading to glibc2.6 fixed all my problems. I presume libc6 2.7 works on the most recent kernels, but it's very not-nice for people running 2.6.9 with smp to upgrade libc6 and find their system almost completely unusable. Bug#454661: linux-image-2.6.22-3-686: locks up or crashes, errors in tg3, psmouse and usb (2.6.22-2 worked fine)
Subject: linux-image-2.6.22-3-686: locks up or crashes, errors in tg3, psmouse and usb (2.6.22-2 worked fine) Package: linux-image-2.6.22-3-686 Version: 2.6.22-6 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system *** Please type your report below this line *** Upgrading from kernel 2.6.22-2 to 2.6.22-3 caused my machine to become very unstable, with random failures of the network interface (causing it to disconnect from the network and then reconnect later), temporary or permanent freezes of the display, and eventually some kernel panics. These failures occured at random intervals going from a few minutes to about one hour in the best case. This machine has been running fine for the last few years with most of the 2.6 kernels that entered Debian testing: 2.6.12-1, 2.6.15-1, 2.6.16-2, 2.6.17-2, 2.6.18-3, 2.6.18-4, 2.6.21-2, 2.6.22-2. The version 2.6.22-3 that entered testing yesterday is the first one that causes such problems leading to sudden crashes and data loss. At first I blamed it on the upgrade of the proprietary fglrx kernel module that was also upgraded at the same time (proprietary modules are evil and always suspicious), but I rebooted several times without the module and the system kept on crashing. It is only after rebooting with the older kernel 2.6.22-2 that the problems stopped. I could even rebuild and reload the newer fglrx module for the old kernel and everything is still working fine. But as soon as I reboot with the 2.6.22-3 kernel, the random freezes and crashes start again. Here are some excerpts from /var/log/messages showing the problems that occur with various devices, until there is eventually a kernel panic (for which I have no message): Dec 4 17:13:31 bora-bora -- MARK -- Dec 4 17:33:31 bora-bora -- MARK -- Dec 4 17:53:31 bora-bora -- MARK -- Dec 4 18:11:32 bora-bora kernel: tg3: eth0: Link is down. Bug#454665: initramfs-tools: busybox depends should include busybox-static
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.90a Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Attempting to install busybox-static when initramfs-tools is installed results in an uninstall of initramfs-tools, and, consequently, the Debian kernel package. Obviously busybox-static (vs. busybox) is not normally needed, but, again obviously, it is precisely when things (i.e. dynamic libraries) are broken that it *is* needed (I've been there - it's not pretty). It is these (potential) circumstances that justify the severity of this bug. Fortunately, it is super easy to fix. I've installed my own copy of initramfs-tools on a test machine, where the *only* change is to the Depends line in the control file, from: Depends: klibc-utils (= 1.4.34-1), busybox (= 1:1.01-3) | busybox-initramfs, cpio, module-init-tools, udev (= 0.086-1) to: Depends: klibc-utils (= 1.4.34-1), busybox (= 1:1.01-3) | busybox-static (= 1:1.01-3), cpio, module-init-tools, udev (= 0.086-1) (Note that the busybox-initramfs package is not available.) I don't know if this qualifies as a patch or not, but there it is. It works great - I was able to install busybox-static (which removes busybox) with no problem. Note that this issue relates to a bug filed against busybox-static (#375568), but it appears to be more properly filed against initramfs-tools (especialy since #375568 was filed nearly a year and a half ago and, as with all the busybox and busybox-static bugs, nothing seems to be happening with them). Hopefully this can happen ASAP, since it's very easy, and only makes good things happen! Bug#454666: MD5 signatures provide no security
Package: dpkg Version: 1.13.25 Severity: critical Note: reported against the current version of dpkg, but applies equally to all versions up to the present time. MD5 checksums are not secure. A recently discovered mathematical technique allows *ANY* document containing a few attacker-chosen random blocks to have any chosen MD5 checksum. The paper is titled Vulnerability of software integrity and code signing applications to chosen-prefix collisions for MD5 by Arjen Lenstra and Benne de Weger, Bell Laboratories. Full text is available online.[1] In particular, it is now computationally feasible for a single attacker with a desktop machine to modify any executable of his or her choosing to have any desired MD5 checksum. Exploitation of this flaw would allow an attacker to substitute arbitrary code for any legitimate Debian package using a man in the middle attack undetected whenever a user is installing new software, or to put up a debian mirror site or repository containing arbitrary code disguised as legitimate Debian software and having the same checksums. Bug#393368: marked as done (Source package contains non-free IETF RFC/I-D's)
Your message dated Thu, 06 Dec 2007 23:02:06 + with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#393368: fixed in evolution-exchange 2.12.2.dfsg-1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: evolution-exchange Version: 2.6.3-1 Severity: serious Hi! This bug has been filed on multiple packages, and general discussions are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal or debian-devel in the thread with Subject: Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in source packages. It seems this source package contains the following files from the IETF under non-free license terms: evolution-exchange-2.6.3/docs/ietf/draft-brezak-spnego-http-04.txt evolution-exchange-2.6.3/docs/ietf/rfc2518.txt evolution-exchange-2.6.3/docs/ietf/rfc2616.txt evolution-exchange-2.6.3/docs/ietf/draft-hopmann-collection-props-00.txt evolution-exchange-2.6.3/docs/ietf/draft-goland-http-udp-00.txt evolution-exchange-2.6.3/docs/ietf/draft-davis-dasl-protocol-00.txt The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see: * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments The etch release policy says binary and source packages must each be free: * http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy: * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem. In order of preference: 1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free license. A template for this e-mail request can be found at http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments 2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging the upstream archive and adding a 'dfsg' version name to it. 3. Move the package to non-free. I went over many packages looking for names of likely non-free files, and there may be false positives. If this is the case for your package, I'm sorry for the noise. I'll modify the scripts to take into account false positives when I learn of them, and publish the list of exceptions under Known exceptions at http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments. The atlas packages are quite broken unfortunately. Also the python-numpy used to build python-scipy 0.6.0-4 is quite broken too. We just fixed python-numpy couple of hours ago, so when it hits unstable, we'll try to reproduce and fix this bug too. Bug#454666: MD5 signatures provide no security
severity 454666 normal thanks On Thu, Dec 06, 2007, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In particular, it is now computationally feasible for a single attacker with a desktop machine to modify any executable of his or her choosing to have any desired MD5 checksum. Ray, Debian is not Slashdot. I urge you to actually read the paper you are referring to before making such claims. A chosen-prefix attack certainly does *not* allow to modify an executable to have a desired MD5 checksum. Chosen-prefix attacks do allow to build two different packages with the same checksum. But until proven otherwise that requires the complicity of the Debian maintainer, who is trusted anyway, so you will need to provide a realistic attack scenario in order for your bug report to be considered seriously.
