Bug#476766: linux-image-2.6.24-1-alpha-generic: Alpha using sound driver causes kernel OOPS
Package: linux-image-2.6.24-1-alpha-generic Version: 2.6.24-5 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Playing a sound file via alsa sound devices for the second time causes mmio related kernel OOPS on certain Alpha architectures. Observed on miata (PWS600au) while playing via onboard es1888/7 sound chips and on Tsunami (XP1000) when playing sound through certain sound cards (but onboard es1888 seems to work okay!). Rated the bug as critical as it causes kernel OOPS and often takes out the complete system. This issue is fixed in kernel 2.6.25. Patch is available as commit c143d43aa3149b83e4b40624a27aa2b18638afec in Linus' git tree. Would be nice to have this patch applied if 2.6.24 is going to be released in Etch+half and Lenny. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: alpha Kernel: Linux 2.6.24.4 Locale: LANG=en_NZ, LC_CTYPE=en_NZ (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.24-1-alpha-generic depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.20 Debian configuration management sy ii initramfs-tools [linux-initra 0.91e tools for generating an initramfs ii module-init-tools 3.4-1 tools for managing Linux kernel mo linux-image-2.6.24-1-alpha-generic recommends no packages. -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#453241: still broken (and partly openssh's fault)
On Sun, 13 Apr 2008, Matthijs Mohlmann wrote: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Can you try with ssh and debugging symbols on ? Probably you get more information with gdb then. Being that there are no debug packages for openssh, I rebuilt it on a current Sid machine (with debugging enabled). I'll ask also the upstream maintainer. Russ: Can you take a look at this bug report. It seems that sshd is segfaulting on AMD64 when using the libpam-heimdal module. I do not have a AMD64 box, so it's almost impossible for me to test. I found some odd news! After building openssh on a recent Sid box, the pam account module now works as expected - no segv :) This, along with the fact that there's a new openssh version (with supposed changes in this area), makes it seem like getting ssh rebuilt soon is a good idea ! Bug#453903: Bus error on sparc
hi, unfortunately I don't have many news, but what I can say is - gs works well if you build it without any optimizations (-O0 instead of -O2) - Building everything with -O2, except of igc.c and igcstr.c doesn't help, still a bus error. What makes me a bit wonder is: (gdb) where #0 0xf77f2f9c in ?? () from /usr/lib/libgs.so.8 #1 0xf77f2dac in ?? () from /usr/lib/libgs.so.8 Backtrace stopped: previous frame identical to this frame (corrupt stack?) Just confirmed in VirtualBox by booting with 'install mem=32m', which results in lowmem level 2. After that I do see apt-cdrom-setup offered by anna as an "optional" component, even though it was queued by an anna-install call. IMO components that have been queued should always be installed, even in lowmem level 2. Cheers, FJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I thought we were talking about a real issue instead of an imaginary one? The one you show above is not comparable as apt is running apt-key in it's postinst as well, so it needs gnupg no matter what d-a-k would have as dependencies. > But we are not in such a situation, because apt needs gnupg to configure, too > (it would have failed if it was configured before d-a-k, which is, however, > impossible, because apt Dep: d-a-k). AFAIK apt-key is supposed to be changed to only depend on gpgv instead of gnupg... You mean apt-key from the apt package... so I'm reassigning the bug. >>> The situation is: apt-key needs gpg to work, apt-key needs d-a-k, apt >>> calls apt-key in postinst, d-a-k calls apt-key in postins. > >>> The only solutions I see are: >> Hmm, you're only talking about bootstrapping here, not about >> installation, nor about upgrading... > > No, I talk about them, too. Bug#476532: debian-archive-keyring: unconfigurable due to missing gnupg
Hello, sorry for my last email; Something very bad happened to your mail, so I received a mail with only one word "give". I don't think the question is about directly/indirectly. Imagine a (fictitious) situation, where pkg B has an optional feature requiring pkg C (therefore, B recommends - or even suggests - C). Pkg A uses B, but needs crucially that optional feature. In this case (I think), it would be appropriate to declare the dependency although it's indirect, but, an agreement between the maintainers in question could make it possible to avoided (eg. by creating a dummy package A-with-feature). But we are not in such a situation, because apt needs gnupg to configure, too (it would have failed if it was configured before d-a-k, which is, however, impossible, because apt Dep: d-a-k). And the whole thing of dropping the dependency, IIUC, was made to allow installations of debian w/o gnupg. Adding gnupg as a dependency of apt (which is Essential) wouldn't help this purpose, so it's even more important for the maintainers to agree how to make it work (and then do it). > >> You mean apt-key from the apt package... so I'm reassigning the bug. > > > > The situation is: apt-key needs gpg to work, apt-key needs d-a-k, apt > > calls apt-key in postinst, d-a-k calls apt-key in postins. > > The only solutions I see are: > > Hmm, you're only talking about bootstrapping here, not about > installation, nor about upgrading... No, I talk about them, too. I talk about traces of dpkg actions that shouldn't fail and should produce correct results. Also, upgrading is not an issue here since none of the dependencies in question are versioned. BTW I also consider bootstrap the most crucial action of the three you named, because repairing a f*cked up install is usually easier than a failed bootstrap. (OT story: I once installed Debian on a friend's computer. Everything went fine till bootstrapping failed, because it insisted on downloading from the network although it was running from a DVD. I was able to make it work by running debootstrap manually, but I couldn't resume the installer so I had to configure the network, modules and install the kernel and lilo manually. It was not a pleasant experience.) > > 1) apt Dep: d-a-k, d-a-k Dep: gnupg (this was the situation before you > > dropped the dependency on gnupg) > > > > 2) apt Dep: d-a-k, apt Pre-Dep: gnupg (this is really awkward) > > Why does it need to be a Pre-Depends is it not enough to have the > packages unpacked (by having a Depends: gnupg)? It is sufficient to have them unpacked (at least I think). The problem is that "apt Dep: d-a-k, apt Dep: gnupg" doesn't warrant this. Consider the following trace of dpkg actions (U - unpack, C - configure, initial state of the packages is purged): 1: U d-a-k 2: U apt 3: C d-a-k 4: U gnupg 5: C gnupg 6: C apt which is permitted with those dependencies, but fails in step 3 (apt is unpacked, so you call apt-file, but it fails due to missing gpg). BTW what about the other proposals? Do you think they're infeasible? Regards Jiri Palecek
Bug#476194: Solved: Slime fails to start because a cl-swank related socket-error
Hello again. The cl-swank "error" was solved by setting up the lo network interface, which I had ruined when modify my /etc/network/interfaces file. Once the lo interface is up, slime works fine. If you want to discuss specific aspects of the LPPL, I think you'd better - read it carefully first - read the (quite lengthy) discussions on debian-legal about it - discuss it with people who are interested in that, e.g. on debian-legal. Myself, I just take it for granted that a license which has been drafted together by the LaTeX team and some debian-legal regulars, and been reviewed and finally approved on that list, is DFSG-free. And I have no interest in discussing this; we have indeed more severe licensing problems in texlive; the woeful copyright file is just a symptom of that. >> Of course, if you apply the same patch, including versin information, to >> both files and don't recreate the generated file, no one can prove that >> you didn't abide by the wording of the license, and for sure you did >> follow the spirit. > > What if my preferred form for making modifications to foilhtml.sty is > *really* the .sty format, rather than its original source? > I mean, what if I *honestly* prefer modifying the .sty file directly? That sounds to me a bit like the "What if I prefer to modify the Postscript file directly?" argument which has for sure been brought up when people recommended the GPL, a source-aware license, for documentation. > %% Copyright Boris Veytsman 1997 > > That's not really recent. > Have you got any means to get in touch with the copyright holder (that > is to say, a currently active e-mail address)? Don't use alsaconfig to configure your soundcard. Let udev do the job. 2. vmlinuz-2.6.22-3-vserver-686 -> Is this a Debian kernel? Anyway, if it is a missing driver file the bug against the kernel package. 3. Just do 'rm /var/lib/alsa/asound.state', reboot and check sound. I uploaded a fix, and it seems to build fine, and I tested it on my machine and ensured that it works; the build uses -O2 -g. In any case, if removal is the fate, so be it. Arg - you may be right - I see the upack vulnerability fixed in unstable, but it looks like I may not have gotten the wwpack vulnerability in the patch. Sorry - this week has been really bad for me (I have guests staying and I'm really busy at work, so my concentration is a bit shot). It looks like I may also have missed it for volatile. Damn. This appears to be the patch in question: http://git.debian.org/?p=users/sgran/clamav-devel.git;a=commitdiff;h=65f47ca3711e1bc99970c5eabc0a0598dcd46f26#patch43 I'll apply the patch here, but I'm unlikely to be able to upload to unstable before Monday night - I'm off for a disconnected weekend in 2 hours, and I'm still at work. I am leaving office now, have a nice weekend. ;) Some seconds ago I have commited a bunch of changes to debian/rules to SVN. Could you please check if it works flawlessly for you? It does for me, albeit in a Virtualbox. Cheers, Fabian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#476186: inn2: lib/md5.c contains non-free md5 implementation
Hi Tim, The md5 implementation from RSA Data Security, Inc. does not have a DFSG-compatible licence - it permits you to make and use derivative works, but not to redistribute those works, iirc. Please see this thread already discussed for INN: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=405354 It points to the following clarification: http://www.ietf.org/ietf/IPR/RSA-MD-all Implementations of these message-digest algorithms, including implementations derived from the reference C code in RFC-1319, RFC-1320, and RFC-1321, may be made, used, and sold without license from RSA for any purpose. Therefore, RSA's license allows to redistribute a work based upon RFC 1321. -- Julien ÉLIE « Si le peuple est content des jeux, je te donnerai des sesterces. Errm, when I said you should use sizeof(buf) I meant this for the already existing arrays not for pointers. Please stop writing patches and thus creating more workload for people that need to check your patches. If you can't program in C please wait for someone to write a patch. Reinhard Tartler schrieb: Yes, this is highly not obvious and should be cleaned up. Will be done with the next commit. you mean the binary 'ffmpeg'? Well, it is built in the first step with the static version of ffmpeg, right? Yep, this is what I mean. Reinhard Tartler schrieb: If that works, I think we can drop the drop the sed surgery regarding Makefile.pic / config.mak.pic, I think. In this context I believe that the $(MAKE) calls in debian/rules are implemented in a strange way... You know, we call MAKE twice; once to build the static libraries and then again to build the shared libraries and the frontends. To build the static libraries we call MAKE from the top source directory. Then we backup the static libraries after compilation. Afterwards, to build the shared libraries and the frontends, we go down into each of the libraries' directories and call 'make clean && make' (roughly) there. Is this still necessary, given that we do not manipulate Makefile.pic anymore, or could we simply run 'make clean && make' again from the top source directory instead? If it is possible, we should do this for the sake of clarity. Another thing that I don't understand is, how it builds the ffmpeg frontend (which it obviously does) if MAKE is only run inside the subdirectories but not in the top directory... Yet another issue in the context of debian/rules: As long as we don't run configure with --disable-optimizations, the {C,CXX,LD}FLAGS environment variables that are set by dpkg-buildpackage are simply ignored and overridden with dubious optimization flags in the range between -O3 and -O5. I consider this unacceptable and believe, all sources shuold be compiled with the same standard policy-conform set of flags that is CFLAGS="-Wall -g -O2". Cheers, Fabian -- Dipl.-Phys. Okay, if you make this consideration, then I have to say this makes sense. I think we both agree that we don't know the code enough to sensibly support these optimisations, and I also agree that having a working ffmpeg with less optimisation is better than not having it at all. >> Let's better revert your last change for now and rethink our options. > > Why revert the change? This sounds for me like python-central wanting do stuff when neither the new python2.5 nor the new python is not unpacked on the system yet: > Selecting previously deselected package python2.5-minimal. > Unpacking python2.5-minimal (from .../python2.5-minimal_2.5.2-3_amd64.deb) ... > Selecting previously deselected package python2.5. > Unpacking python2.5 (from .../python2.5_2.5.2-3_amd64.deb) ... > Preparing to replace python 2.4.4-2 (using .../python_2.5.2-1_all.deb) ... > Unpacking replacement python ... > Preparing to replace python-minimal 2.4.4-2 (using > .../python-minimal_2.5.2-1_all.deb) ... > Unpacking replacement python-minimal ... as done here ... > Retrying it works: [...] Because the new python/python2.5 is now installed... > I guess there is some depends or pre-depends missing. preeinst, So Pre-Depends:. But I am not exactly convinced python-uno should have the Pre-Depends:. dh_pycentral adds the preinst/prerm/postinst snippets. I think the fix should be in either python-central or an other python package and we shouldn't add Pre-Depends: on python packagees just supporting the default verssion... Cloning to python-central (python-uno'd need a rebuild when dh_pycentral gets changed) Regards, Rene -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Which version of telepathy-gabble, telepathy-stream-engine etc were you using? Was this with SIP or XMPP? Can you attach a log from telepathy-stream-engine? To get such a log run the following and then make the call: STREAM_ENGINE_DEBUG=all STREAM_ENGINE_PERSIST=true /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-stream-engine Sjoerd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
