Bug#495968: gpicview unsafe /tmp usage
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 retitle 495968 gpicview unsafe /tmp usage thanks Thanks to Nico. I have splitted those two bugs to #497005 and #497006. Once upstream's #2019481 [1] is fixed, this bug can be closed. I plan to orphan gpicview after release of Lenny, no matter gpicview is in Lenny or not. I am still happy to maintain gpicview *BEFORE* release of Lenny, but I will not spend time to read its source code and trying to fix it by myself. If there are patches to fix upstream's #2019481, I will test it and contact security and release team, trying to push gpicview to Lenny. If anyone want to adopt gpicview, feel free to upload it as New maintainer (even before release of Lenny). I will mail to WNPP and orphan gpicview *AFTER* release of Lenny. (If nobody adopt it before release of Lenny, of course.) This message about the error concerns a few packages at once. I've tested all the packages (for Lenny) on my Debian mirror. All scripts of packages (marked as executable) were tested. In some packages I've discovered scripts with errors which may be used by a user for damaging important system files or user's files. For example if a script uses in its work a temp file which is created in /tmp directory, then every user can create symlink with the same name in this directory in order to destroy or rewrite some system or user file. Symlink attack may also lead not only to the data desctruction but to denial of service as well. Even if you create files or directories with help of function 'RANDOM' or pid(), then your system is not protected. Attacker can create many symlinks in order to destroy your data or create 'denial of service' for your package scripts. Even if you make rm(dir) for files/directories, then your system is not protected. Attacker can permanently create symlinks. This list is created with the help of script. This list is sorted by hand. Howewer in some cases mistake is possible. Please, Be understanding to possible mistakes. :) I set Severity into grave for this bug. The table of discovered problems is below. Bug#487038: do we know why building on arm fails with Build killed with signal 15 after 500 minutes of inactivity ?
Currently it fails on hppa. I wrote an email to the debian-hppa list but I didn't receive a response yet. I don't have access to any HPPA machine either. From what I read from http://buildd.debian.org/pkg.cgi?pkg=zeroc-icee, it now seems to have problems with arm only, where it fails with: Build killed with signal 15 after 500 minutes of inactivity See http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=armpkg=zeroc-iceever=1.2.0-6 Do we know why? Do we care? I ask because I know that the plan is to deprecate old (arm) port in favour of new (armel) port after Lenny release. http://www.debian.org/ports/arm/index.en.html Ok, I may be telling some nonsense here, I am not a developer, and don't even know what this package do. Was just looking critical bugs for next release and trying to figure out why they are fixed and still listed. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I'm completely unfamiliar with ggz. If a patch is available to backport the libdb detection, I'm willing to test it and make that upload if it works. I'm presuming it is one of the files here: http://svn.ggzgamingzone.org/trac.cgi/browser/trunk/ggzd/m4 Which revisions, which files, which changes? (Trac can usually be persuaded to provide a single URL that shows the diff between relevant revisions. If you can identify the correct diffs, I'll do the rest - but the diff does need to be *solely* for the M4 changes to support libdb detection.) -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Bug#302578: dict-jargon: FTBFS: Error on w3m and lynx calls
Hi, * Apparently xmlto calls w3m or lynx to convert html to text, but I can't find the call. (I don't know why neither one is a Build-Depend.) If w3m is installed, it is called, but creates an error. Since I can't locate the error, I have listed w3m as Build-Conflicts-Indep. The cause of the problem is described below. 1. According to jargsrc-4.4.4/Makefile, jargon.txt: jargon-web.xml $(XSLFILES) xmlto -p -width=79 -m jargon-text.xsl txt jargon-web.xml xmlto is called with -p width=79. 2. xmlto then pass option -width=79 to /usr/share/xmlto/format/docbook/txt 3. /usr/share/xmlto/format/docbook/txt, then pass the option -width=79 to w3m like this, /usr/bin/w3m -T text/html -dump -width=79 /tmp/xmlto.NGhmUC/jargon-web.proc 4. Since w3m not recognize the option -width=nn, then it return error. == More == According to /usr/share/xmlto/format/docbook/txt, it contains the following code, if [ -x /usr/bin/w3m ] then CONVERT=/usr/bin/w3m ARGS=-T text/html -dump elif [ -x /usr/bin/lynx ] then CONVERT=/usr/bin/lynx ARGS=-force_html -dump -nolist -width=72 elif [ -x /usr/bin/links ] then CONVERT=/usr/bin/links ARGS=-dump else echo 2 No way to convert HTML to text found. exit 1 fi 1. I have just tried to resolve this problem by editing jargsrc-4.4.4/Makefile like this, WIDTH_ARGS=$(shell \ if [ -x /usr/bin/w3m ]; \ then \ echo '-cols 79'; \ elif [ -x /usr/bin/lynx ]; \ then \ echo '-width=79'; \ elif [ -x /usr/bin/links ]; \ then \ echo '-width 79'; \ fi \ ) jargon.txt: jargon-web.xml $(XSLFILES) xmlto -p $(WIDTH_ARGS) -m jargon-text.xsl txt jargon-web.xml 2. After apply this solution, the w3m error is resolved. 3. However, it create another error when applying the patch, patch debian/jargon-patch, since the patch is used to apply to the output generated by lynx only, not w3m. 4. I'll try to resolved this new issue. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#495144: backtrace
Using unstable and following the same method, one more item for consideration. The default project enables the terminal plugin and anjuta-launcher appears to want to use this terminal. Killing anjuta-launcher allows anjuta to continue as normal. Edit the project preferences and disable the terminal plugin, try to execute the program again - now anjuta brings up a temporary terminal window itself *but* killing anjuta-launcher does not restore anjuta behaviour. The crashed temporary terminal has halted anjuta itself. Bug#473350: permissions problem
This appears to be a permissions problem - ggzd needs /var/lib/ggzd/ and any files within it to be chmod games.games It's hard to tell due to the problems with #473350 but once #473350 is fixed (with an m4 patch from upstream), a simple preinst allows ggzd to start normally whether or not /var/lib/ggzd exists or contains files. $ cat debian/ggzd.preinst #!/bin/sh set -e if [ -d /var/lib/ggzd ]; then chown games.games -R /var/lib/ggzd/ fi #DEBHELPER# I propose to upload a fixed package that also implements the fix for #490420. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#497042: mediawiki: populateCategory.php script fails with PostgreSQL
Package: mediawiki Version: 1:1.13.0-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Using PostgreSQL 8.3.3 and Mediawiki 1.13. Upgraded from Mediawiki 1.12 to 1.13. Had to execute the populateCategory.php script inside maintenance due to the changes made by upstream in the software, so that new category and categorylinks tables are populated. Bug#496844: gdmflexiserver: new gdm screen with unreadable font
Le jeudi 28 août 2008 à 01:14 +0300, Eddy Petrișor a écrit : Subject: gdmflexiserver: new gdm screen with unreadable font Package: gdm Version: 2.20.7-1 Severity: serious Justification: unusable gdm session; breaks existing one Hello, I tried today to log again on another console and I used the gdmflexiserver menu entry to get to a new gdm screen, but I wasn't able to use it since the fonts were garbled and I couldn't read anything on he screen. What's more weird is that, later, when swicthing to the VT that contained at some point the broken gdm screen, then back, it happens that the fonts in the original VT (vt7) get garbled, but they can be restored if I switch to any getty console then back. I.e. ctrl+alt+F8, ctrl+al+F7 breaks fonts, while ctrl+alt+F1, ctrl+alt+F7 will fix the issue. See attached images to see how the image/fonts are broken. I am not sure if this is related, but when such a vt change occurs, the layout information is reset to CAPS set and ctrl and caps are switched (I use caps as ctrl, and the other way around). I will submit a new bug about this, but I am not sure which is the proper package. This is certainly caused by a bug in the X driver, presumably with the RENDER extension. Bug#494223: Definition of PIM_REGISTER in pim.h, with more information
I am sending this email again because I have more information. - Forwarded message from cal - To: YOSHIFUJI Hideaki [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Claudio Martins [EMAIL PROTECTED], Jorge Daniel Sequeira Matias [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Definition of PIM_REGISTER in pim.h Hi. About the new file linux/pim.h and the definitions of PIM in linux 2.6.26. The #define PIM_REGISTER 1 was in file mroute.h and was protected by #ifdef __KERNEL__ until version 2.5.25. In version 2.6.26 this define is in file pim.h but is no longer protected by a #ifdef __KERNEL__. Is this change intentional? This change breaks the compilation of software from the project www.xorp.org. In the file mrt/include/netinet/pim.h for the xorp software they define PIM messages types and use this code: /* * PIM message types */ #define PIM_HELLO 0x0 /* PIM-SM and PIM-DM*/ #define PIM_REGISTER0x1 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_REGISTER_STOP 0x2 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_JOIN_PRUNE 0x3 /* PIM-SM and PIM-DM*/ #define PIM_BOOTSTRAP 0x4 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_ASSERT 0x5 /* PIM-SM and PIM-DM*/ #define PIM_GRAFT 0x6 /* PIM-DM only */ #define PIM_GRAFT_ACK 0x7 /* PIM-DM only */ #define PIM_CAND_RP_ADV 0x8 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_ALL_DF_ELECTION 0xa /* Bidir-PIM-SM only*/ You can see the bug report with more details in: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=494223 I am one of the two persons that is packaging xorp for Debian. There must be something else really broken :) Could you check if a program that just calls av_log_set_callback() with some function as parameter crashes too? And does something like valgrind exist for mips? Might help here :) I will try to take another look at it. CCing debian-mips in case someone has some time to kill and would like to take a look at a mips-specific issue. Bug#478812: Interdiff
For the benefit of the release team and the bug logs, this is the full interdiff for ggz-server, closing 478812 (merged with 473350) and 490420: debian/patches/database-m4.patch comes from upstream (isolated to only fix the current problem), see: http://hq.ggzgamingzone.org/~josef/diffs/0.0.14.1/ The change to database-m4 requires running the autotools so these are added as Build-Depends; autoconf, automake | automake1.9, libtool. The effect of database-m4.patch is to tighten the build-dependencies on libdb-dev such that ggzd ends up linked against libdb4.4 so the build-depends for libdb-dev has been replaced by libdb4.4-dev. (Support for libdb4.6 and later is being implemented upstream.) 'autoreconf -if' overwrites INSTALL so a tweak to debian/rules replaces the upstream one and handles the files generated by rerunning the autotools. Thankfully, running the autotools didn't turn out to cause too much bloat in the .diff.gz. The new preinst was developed in consultation with ggz upstream [0]. diff -u ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control --- ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control +++ ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control @@ -4,7 +4,8 @@ Maintainer: Debian GGZ Maintainers [EMAIL PROTECTED] Uploaders: Josef Spillner [EMAIL PROTECTED], Peter Eisentraut [EMAIL PROTECTED] Standards-Version: 3.7.3 -Build-Depends: cdbs, debhelper (= 5), libavahi-client-dev, libggz-dev (= 0.0.14), libexpat1-dev (= 1.95.6), libdb-dev, libfam-dev, lsb-base (= 3.0-3) +Build-Depends: autoconf, automake | automake1.9, cdbs, debhelper (= 5), libtool, libavahi-client-dev, libggz-dev (= 0.0.14), + libexpat1-dev (= 1.95.6), libdb4.4-dev, libfam-dev, lsb-base (= 3.0-3) Vcs-Svn: svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-ggz/trunk/ggz-server/ Vcs-Browser: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-ggz/trunk/ggz-server/ Homepage: http://www.ggzgamingzone.org/ diff -u ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules --- ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules +++ ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules @@ -17,5 +17,13 @@ +makebuilddir/ggzd:: + cp INSTALL INSTALL.upstream + autoreconf -if + mv INSTALL.upstream INSTALL + install/ggzd:: install -d -o games -g games debian/ggzd/var/lib/ggzd binary-install/ggz-game-servers:: rm debian/$(cdbs_curpkg)/etc/ggzd/rooms/entry.room + +clean:: + rm -f config.sub config.guess config.log diff -u ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog --- ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog +++ ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog @@ -1,3 +1,16 @@ +ggz-server (0.0.14.1-1.1) unstable; urgency=low + + * Non-maintainer upload. + * Add preinst to fix permissions on /var/lib/ggzd, +Fixes: ggzd Fails to install (Closes: #478812) +(LP: #149583) + * Move from libdb-dev to libdb4.4-dev and add upstream patch +for m4/database.m4 to tighten build-deps. This message about the error concerns a few packages at once. Hi Luca! [EMAIL PROTECTED] scrisse: Hi Luca! I noted your bugfix in launchpad. I'll incorporate it in the next version of the package. I'm waiting a couple of days for a better inspection by the font-code maintainer upstream, so please wait as well. The patch is against latest svn, it probably needs to be backported to 0.46. OK, please notify me via Debian's BTS if you have an update on that. If I have problem in backporting it, I'll ask for help. One sad piece of news is that I wasn't able to contact upstream again: [EMAIL PROTECTED] doesn't work any more. However, if people confirm that he has been lost in nature, I intend to maintain loadlin as new upstream. In any case, I can already provide a loadlin.exe built from source that works for Lenny. Bug#495954: struggling to reproduce
Hi, I installed a new machine very similar to the original one. I couldn't install exactly the same packages, a couple of locally installed ones aren't available anymore. But the diff of the /var/lib/dpkg/status files were really small. Then I replaced /var/lib/dpkg/status and /var/lib/apt/pkgstates with those from the old system, and did the same upgrade (at least I tried to mimic the steps). Unfortunately the slapd upgrade went all right (actually, the whole upgrade did). The relevant (egrep 'libldap|slapd') part of the pkgDpkgPM=true output is: /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 36 --unpack [...] /var/cache/apt/archives/ldap-utils_2.4.10-3_i386.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/slapd_2.4.10-3_i386.deb /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 38 --force-depends --force-remove-essential --remove libldap-2.3-0 /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 72 --unpack [...] /var/cache/apt/archives/libldap2-dev_2.4.10-3_i386.deb [...] /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 94 --force-depends --force-remove-essential --remove libldap2 /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 96 --unpack /var/cache/apt/archives/libldap-2.4-2_2.4.10-3_i386.deb [...] /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 254 --configure [...] libldap-2.4-2 [...] slapd [...] libldap2-dev [...] The aptitude logs also showed some differences (apart from some version differences due to testing moving on): --- original upgrade, which failed +++ retry +[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libldap2 -[REMOVE] libldap2 -[UPGRADE] bacula 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-client 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-common 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-console 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-director-common 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-director-sqlite3 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-fd 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-sd 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-sd-sqlite3 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 -[UPGRADE] bacula-server 2.2.8-4~bpo40+1 - 2.4.2-1 +[UPGRADE] sun-java5-bin 1.5.0-14-1etch1 - 1.5.0-16-3 +[UPGRADE] sun-java5-demo 1.5.0-14-1etch1 - 1.5.0-16-3 +[UPGRADE] sun-java5-jdk 1.5.0-14-1etch1 - 1.5.0-16-3 +[UPGRADE] sun-java5-jre 1.5.0-14-1etch1 - 1.5.0-16-3 I can try to work these kinks out, but at least the first one seems out of reach (and at the same time: relevant). Bug#493599: removing udns from lenny?
Hi, udns has the recent DNS problem in a pretty bad way (i.e. no random, not even query IDs vs. not enough). And there is no indication that anyone is working on getting it solved at the moment. (Last upstream release is Jan 2007, the upstream mailing list archives have 2007 no activity since the announcement of that, too.) As udns is not in wide use across our archive, with only two packages using it, it might be good to not release it with lenny. For the two packages: - jabberd2 is not in testing, - libapache2-mod-defensible can be compiled without udns. Even better would be fixing, but I think this might be involved (based on the our design doesn't allow for port randomization) ... Opinions? For example, if aptitude is downloading packages in an rxvt window, the percent count stops changing as well, the display is also frozen. I noticed something similiar, with the VMware Workstation 6.5 Beta I thought this was just a bug in the beta but maybe it's somewhere in Debian. For example sometimes I just rsync a whole system to another one. and then it seems to hang like you experience it. But if I then just hide the window and unhide it again, then it get's updated once. I had to do it a few times to check if rsync was finished or not. So the system was still running it was just the graphic output in my case which wasn't updated. Any (ethernet) network also seems to stop: It no longer answers to pings, and a remote ssh login stops working, too. Hm unfortunately I don't know if in my case the network still worked or not. If it happens again for me I try to find more about it. Any help from the _team_ would be *very helpful*! Would you foresee any problem with having alsa-source 1.0.17 and alsa-lib 1.0.16 in lenny? I don't, and in fact I think having 1.0.17 would be better as it would match the ALSA in 2.6.26 (it would actually compile). ACK Furthermore, is there any problem with having kernel 2.6.26 (which includes alsa drivers version 1.0.17) and alsa-lib 1.0.16 in lenny as we have now, or would it be desirable to have 1.0.17 just to match the kernel version? Bug#494223: Definition of PIM_REGISTER in pim.h, with more information
From: Jose Calhariz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 14:43:20 +0100 I am sending this email again because I have more information. Thanks for your report. Yoshifuji-san, nothing in linux/pim.h should be exported to userspace. The previous location, linux/mroute.h, EXPLICITLY __KERNEL__ protected these defines and datastructures. When you created linux/pim.h, everything you moved there was __KERNEL__ protected in linux/mroute.h, and you should not have changed that. Applications perhaps were having to do their own defines, and looking at XORP this seems to be what applications have indeed been doing. Guess what that means? It means that if we start to export this stuff after having not done so for nearly 10 years, it's going to break compilation of userspace and we therefore cannot do this. In fact, both of the changesets involving linux/pim.h are broken: commit 80a9492a33dd7d852465625022d56ff76d62174d Author: YOSHIFUJI Hideaki [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu Apr 3 09:22:52 2008 +0900 [IPV4] MROUTE: Adjust include files for user-space. It should have been clear to you once you hit this problem and had to add such horrible hacks that this was simply not going to work. Now we export this struct pim thing exactly because applications cannot include netinet/in.h and linux/in.h at the same time. Nothing in the kernel uses struct pim, it's purely a protocol definition for userspace, rather than a kernel side API. We should never do this, either get it added to some glibc provided header or define these things inside of the application itself. I am very unhappy about this. And I don't even have the patience to wait for you to fix this up, I'm going to just rip out everything that is unnecessarily exported here and get things back to how they were before your changes. net: Unbreak userspace which includes linux/mroute.h This essentially reverts two commits: 1) 2e8046271f68198dd37451017c1a4a2432e4ec68 ([IPV4] MROUTE: Move PIM definitions to linux/pim.h.) and 2) 80a9492a33dd7d852465625022d56ff76d62174d ([IPV4] MROUTE: Adjust include files for user-space.) which broke userpsace, in particular the XORP build as reported by Jose Calhariz, the debain package maintainer for XORP. Nothing originally in linux/mroute.h was exported to userspace ever, but some of this stuff started to be when it was moved into this new linux/pim.h, and that was wrong. If we didn't provide these definitions for 10 years we can reasonable expect that applications defined this stuff locally or used GLIBC headers providing the protocol definitions. And as such the only result of this can be conflict and userland build breakage. The commit #1 had such a short and terse commit message, that we cannot even know why such a move and set of new userland exports were even made. Signed-off-by: David S. Jeff Licquia [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm confused. The license posted looks like a straight 3-clause BSD license to me, which is surely DFSG-free. What problems do you have with it? It was not entirely clear that the license is BSD (it isnot referred in the text). It appeared to be custom made, which would better have peer review unless that had already been taken place prior this bug report. In that case the bug is no issue. Observations: #1. Does this extend to derived works? In that case, it restricts the other authors to express another viewpoint to the promote products, because of previous requirement must retain...list of conditions that apply to other authors? Does the last (3) clause limit the commercial and promotional use? According to policy: Free Redistribution The license of a Debian component may not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an === aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. I will soon be requesting removal of the xerces28 packages. libxerces-c2-dev is just a rename of libxerces28-dev, so this should be a completely trivial change. This represents the next-to-last step of the transition to the new xerces packaging. Starting when 3.0.0 enters unstable (it is still in beta in experimental), the libxerces-c-dev package will always point to the latest xerces-c development package in the archive. When your upstream provides a package that works with xerces-c 3, you can change your dependency to either libxerces-c-dev or libxerces-c3-dev, depending on whether you want to automatically try the next major release when it comes out (which could be years away). Bug#497116: xorg: random crashes on shutdown
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.3+15 Severity: grave Justification: causes data loss xorg crashes randomly on shutdown, i.e. after the desktop environment shut down (closing programs and playing shutdown sound). The screen does not return to the normal console (tty1) but stays black instead and freezes the system (only switching off helps). This happened for me both with KDE 3 and 4 (each using the latest versions available in Debian). Unfortunately no information about the crash is recorded in the log files, and I did not find a clearly reproducable pattern. It usually happens once a day, although I start/shutdown the system only about 2-4 times a day. This is extremely annoying, in particular when losing data after working on it all day.
