Is the machine pingable after the crash? Can you restart X without any problem? It would be good if you could: * send us the log of the crashed session (if X already restarted, the previous log is moved to /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old) * catch a backtrace with gdb after installing xserver-xorg-core-dbg and xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg. The easiest way is to connect through ssh from another machine, attach gdb with gdb -p $(pidof X), wait for the crash to occurs, and then ru "bt full" in gdb. Bug#494401: one more issue
Hi Please also address the issue below. A CVE id for this issue has been requested. Thanks for your work. Cheers Steffen Ruby upstream has announced another security flaw (DoS vulnerability in REXML module): http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2008/08/23/dos-vulnerability-in-rexml/ Test case available in part: "Impact". Proposed preliminary fix: http://www.ruby-lang.org/security/20080823rexml/rexml-expansion-fix.rb Testing status: REXML parsing of provided *.xml file causes 100% cpu usage for about 1 and 1/4 minutes (checked the ruby-1.8.5-5.5 case). signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Bug#494031: Non-deterministic build failures
Hi, I've now tried to build paraview 5 times with the proposed patch on sparc. 2 times package build succeeded, 3 other times it failed with different errors in different places. At this point I have no idea what makes the build non-deterministic. I don't think it's hardware issue, because I did not see any problems while building other packages. This message about the error concerns a few packages at once. I've tested all the packages (for Lenny) on my Debian mirror. All scripts of packages (marked as executable) were tested. In some packages I've discovered scripts with errors which may be used by a user for damaging important system files or user's files. For example if a script uses in its work a temp file which is created in /tmp directory, then every user can create symlink with the same name in this directory in order to destroy or rewrite some system or user file. Symlink attack may also lead not only to the data desctruction but to denial of service as well. Even if you create files or directories with help of function 'RANDOM' or pid(), then your system is not protected. Attacker can create many symlinks in order to destroy your data or create 'denial of service' for your package scripts. Even if you make rm(dir) for files/directories, then your system is not protected. Attacker can permanently create symlinks. This list is created with the help of script. This list is sorted by hand. Howewer in some cases mistake is possible. Please, Be understanding to possible mistakes. :) I set Severity into grave for this bug. The table of discovered problems is below. This bug is likely a WONTFIX for the reasons already pointed out, because: a) udns design was intended to make it simple to write an application using it, which is accomplished by using only one socket. This restricts it to only one source port for all queries. Introducing random source port into the code would break its design. b) The author believes random query IDs would do more harm than incremental ones, since DNS error responses does not allow to distinguish the query responded by anything else than the query ID, which in the case of a collision (which is likely for only 16 bits). This could break robustness of the software giving only a slight security. Despite all this, since some other software have the same or similar security issues and are also used as stub resolvers (like glibc), we could do the same that was done for them: release an advisory warning the users about the possible issues and workarounds (stub resolvers need a trusted resolver in a trusted network). However, I think udns should still be left out of stable, since the upstream author has requested this from me in the last release, because he believes the software is still experimental (mainly the library API/ABI). Bug#495144: Lowering severity
severity 495144 important thanks I don't think grave severity for this bug is justifiable. The compiled program can be executed normally outside Anjuta. The compiled program can be executed normally *within the terminal* in Anjuta. The rest of Anjuta is unaffected - this is a problem that causes a crash but *only* with one specific menu option (Execute program F3) which has clear and obvious alternatives. I've been using Anjuta regularly for years and I have not needed to use "Execute Program" from the build menu. In no way does this bug make Anjuta unusable for all users - it merely means that users cannot use one of the ways of executing programs that Anjuta claims to support, without impairing the other methods. After doing a little to reproduce and debug this problem, I cannot see that this bug deserves "grave" severity. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#497117: tangogps: Contains glade-generated files without source
Package: tangogps Version: 0.9.2-2 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 2.2.1 [Cc: debian-legal] Hi, The files src/interface.c src/interface.h src/support.h src/support.c appear to be generated using the Glade user interface builder. However the source code for them (i.e. the modifiable glade project) seems to be missing from the source tarball. Sorry if I'm mistaken, I just couldn't find it there. I believe the generated files are not "source code" as defined by GPL (i.e. "in preferred form of modification"). Hence without distributing the Glade projects along with the files they cannot be distributed under the GPL. Furthermore, I believe this fails DFSG #2. Bug#497116: xorg: random crashes on shutdown
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.3+15 Severity: grave Justification: causes data loss xorg crashes randomly on shutdown, i.e. after the desktop environment shut down (closing programs and playing shutdown sound). The screen does not return to the normal console (tty1) but stays black instead and freezes the system (only switching off helps). This happened for me both with KDE 3 and 4 (each using the latest versions available in Debian). Unfortunately no information about the crash is recorded in the log files, and I did not find a clearly reproducable pattern. It usually happens once a day, although I start/shutdown the system only about 2-4 times a day. This is extremely annoying, in particular when losing data after working on it all day. I am using Thinkpad X40 with an integrated Intel 855GM graphics controller. Please tell me if and how I can provide further help. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.25.10-sh-pentiumm (SMP w/1 CPU core; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". > Jeff Licquia <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > I'm confused. The license posted looks like a straight 3-clause BSD > license to me, which is surely DFSG-free. What problems do you have > with it? It was not entirely clear that the license is BSD (it isnot referred in the text). It appeared to be custom made, which would better have peer review unless that had already been taken place prior this bug report. In that case the bug is no issue. Observations: #1. Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright # notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer. #2. Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright # notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the # documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution. Text referring "The above copyright notice" is nowhere to be found. There is no "notice" above. Only line referring to the person holding the copyright (and range years). #3. Neither the name of the author nor the names of other contributors # may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software # without specific prior written permission. Does this extend to "derived" works? In that case, it restricts the other authors to express another viewpoint to the "promote products", because of previous requirement "must retain...list of conditions" that apply to other authors? Does the last (3) clause limit the commercial and promotional use? According to policy: Free Redistribution The license of a Debian component may not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an === aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license may not require a royalty or other fee for such sale. As i understand, selling can include include advertising work, i.e. mentioning authors that have created derived work. Bug#494223: Definition of PIM_REGISTER in pim.h, with more information
From: Jose Calhariz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 14:43:20 +0100 > I am sending this email again because I have more information. Thanks for your report. Yoshifuji-san, nothing in linux/pim.h should be exported to userspace. The previous location, linux/mroute.h, EXPLICITLY __KERNEL__ protected these defines and datastructures. When you created linux/pim.h, everything you moved there was __KERNEL__ protected in linux/mroute.h, and you should not have changed that. Applications perhaps were having to do their own defines, and looking at XORP this seems to be what applications have indeed been doing. Guess what that means? It means that if we start to export this stuff after having not done so for nearly 10 years, it's going to break compilation of userspace and we therefore cannot do this. In fact, both of the changesets involving linux/pim.h are broken: commit 80a9492a33dd7d852465625022d56ff76d62174d Author: YOSHIFUJI Hideaki <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Thu Apr 3 09:22:52 2008 +0900 [IPV4] MROUTE: Adjust include files for user-space. It should have been clear to you once you hit this problem and had to add such horrible hacks that this was simply not going to work. Now we export this "struct pim" thing exactly because applications cannot include netinet/in.h and linux/in.h at the same time. Nothing in the kernel uses "struct pim", it's purely a protocol definition for userspace, rather than a kernel side API. We should never do this, either get it added to some glibc provided header or define these things inside of the application itself. I am very unhappy about this. And I don't even have the patience to wait for you to fix this up, I'm going to just rip out everything that is unnecessarily exported here and get things back to how they were before your changes. net: Unbreak userspace which includes linux/mroute.h This essentially reverts two commits: 1) 2e8046271f68198dd37451017c1a4a2432e4ec68 ("[IPV4] MROUTE: Move PIM definitions to .") and 2) 80a9492a33dd7d852465625022d56ff76d62174d ("[IPV4] MROUTE: Adjust include files for user-space.") which broke userpsace, in particular the XORP build as reported by Jose Calhariz, the debain package maintainer for XORP. Nothing originally in linux/mroute.h was exported to userspace ever, but some of this stuff started to be when it was moved into this new linux/pim.h, and that was wrong. If we didn't provide these definitions for 10 years we can reasonable expect that applications defined this stuff locally or used GLIBC headers providing the protocol definitions. And as such the only result of this can be conflict and userland build breakage. The commit #1 had such a short and terse commit message, that we cannot even know why such a move and set of new userland exports were even made. Signed-off-by: David S. I noticed something similiar, with the VMware Workstation 6.5 Beta I thought this was just a bug in the beta but maybe it's somewhere in Debian. For example sometimes I just rsync a whole system to another one. and then it seems to hang like you experience it. But if I then just hide the window and unhide it again, then it get's updated once. I had to do it a few times to check if rsync was finished or not. So the system was still running it was just the graphic output in my case which wasn't updated. > Any (ethernet) network also seems to stop: It no longer answers to > pings, and a remote ssh login stops working, too. Hm unfortunately I don't know if in my case the network still worked or not. If it happens again for me I try to find more about it. On my native real Debian sid/experimental system I hadn't this problem yet. -- Felix Zielcke -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#493599: removing udns from lenny?
Hi, udns has the recent DNS problem in a pretty bad way (i.e. no random, not even query IDs vs. not enough). And there is no indication that anyone is working on getting it solved at the moment. (Last upstream release is Jan 2007, the upstream mailing list archives have 2007 no activity since the announcement of that, too.) As udns is not in wide use across our archive, with only two packages using it, it might be good to not release it with lenny. For the two packages: - jabberd2 is not in testing, - libapache2-mod-defensible can be compiled without udns. Even better would be fixing, but I think this might be involved (based on the "our design doesn't allow for port randomization") ... Opinions? Bug#495954: struggling to reproduce
Hi, I installed a new machine very similar to the original one. I couldn't install exactly the same packages, a couple of locally installed ones aren't available anymore. But the diff of the /var/lib/dpkg/status files were really small. Then I replaced /var/lib/dpkg/status and /var/lib/apt/pkgstates with those from the old system, and did the same upgrade (at least I tried to mimic the steps). "Unfortunately" the slapd upgrade went all right (actually, the whole upgrade did). Bug#497056: lsb-base: /lib/lsb/init-functions NON-DSFG Licence ?
Package: lsb-base Version: 3.2-19 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 2.1 Please investigate if files included in lsb-base conform to DFSG. A lincense change to GPL would be better suited for Debian. Policy / 2.1. The Debian Free Software Guidelines: ... Derived Works The license must allow modifications and derived works, and must allow them to be distributed under the same terms as the license of the original software. Integrity of The Author's Source Code The license may restrict source-code from being distributed in modified form _only_ if the license allows the distribution of "patch files" with the source code for the purpose of modifying the program at build time. The license must explicitly permit distribution of software built from modified source code. The license may require derived works to carry a different name or version number from the original software. (This is a compromise. The Debian Project encourages all authors to not restrict any files, source or binary, from being modified.) Your message dated Fri, 29 Aug 2008 14:47:03 + with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#496384: fixed in netmrg 0.20-2 has caused the Debian Bug report #496384, regarding The possibility of attack with the help of symlinks in some Debian packages to be marked as done. Indeed: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-voip/zaptel/?rev=6111&sc=1 includes that specific fix (replacing with NULL). Tested with 2.6.26-1-amd64 , upstream 2.6.27-rc4 and some other versions. Bug#478812: Interdiff
For the benefit of the release team and the bug logs, this is the full interdiff for ggz-server, closing 478812 (merged with 473350) and 490420: debian/patches/database-m4.patch comes from upstream (isolated to only fix the current problem), see: http://hq.ggzgamingzone.org/~josef/diffs/0.0.14.1/ The change to database-m4 requires running the autotools so these are added as Build-Depends; autoconf, automake | automake1.9, libtool. The effect of database-m4.patch is to tighten the build-dependencies on libdb-dev such that ggzd ends up linked against libdb4.4 so the build-depends for libdb-dev has been replaced by libdb4.4-dev. (Support for libdb4.6 and later is being implemented upstream.) 'autoreconf -if' overwrites INSTALL so a tweak to debian/rules replaces the upstream one and handles the files generated by rerunning the autotools. Thankfully, running the autotools didn't turn out to cause too much bloat in the .diff.gz. The new preinst was developed in consultation with ggz upstream [0]. diff -u ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control --- ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control +++ ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/control @@ -4,7 +4,8 @@ Maintainer: Debian GGZ Maintainers <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Uploaders: Josef Spillner <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Peter Eisentraut <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Standards-Version: 3.7.3 -Build-Depends: cdbs, debhelper (>= 5), libavahi-client-dev, libggz-dev (>= 0.0.14), libexpat1-dev (>= 1.95.6), libdb-dev, libfam-dev, lsb-base (>= 3.0-3) +Build-Depends: autoconf, automake | automake1.9, cdbs, debhelper (>= 5), libtool, libavahi-client-dev, libggz-dev (>= 0.0.14), + libexpat1-dev (>= 1.95.6), libdb4.4-dev, libfam-dev, lsb-base (>= 3.0-3) Vcs-Svn: svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-ggz/trunk/ggz-server/ Vcs-Browser: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-ggz/trunk/ggz-server/ Homepage: http://www.ggzgamingzone.org/ diff -u ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules --- ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules +++ ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/rules @@ -17,5 +17,13 @@ +makebuilddir/ggzd:: + cp INSTALL INSTALL.upstream + autoreconf -if + mv INSTALL.upstream INSTALL + install/ggzd:: install -d -o games -g games debian/ggzd/var/lib/ggzd binary-install/ggz-game-servers:: rm debian/$(cdbs_curpkg)/etc/ggzd/rooms/entry.room + +clean:: + rm -f config.sub config.guess config.log diff -u ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog --- ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog +++ ggz-server-0.0.14.1/debian/changelog @@ -1,3 +1,16 @@ +ggz-server (0.0.14.1-1.1) unstable; urgency=low + + * Non-maintainer upload. + * Add preinst to fix permissions on /var/lib/ggzd, +Fixes: ggzd Fails to install (Closes: #478812) +(LP: #149583) + * Move from libdb-dev to libdb4.4-dev and add upstream patch +for m4/database.m4 to tighten build-deps. Bug#494223: Definition of PIM_REGISTER in pim.h, with more information
I am sending this email again because I have more information. - Forwarded message from cal - To: YOSHIFUJI Hideaki <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: Claudio Martins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Jorge Daniel Sequeira Matias <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Definition of PIM_REGISTER in pim.h Hi. About the new file linux/pim.h and the definitions of PIM in linux 2.6.26. The "#define PIM_REGISTER 1" was in file mroute.h and was protected by "#ifdef __KERNEL__" until version 2.5.25. In version 2.6.26 this define is in file pim.h but is no longer protected by a "#ifdef __KERNEL__". Is this change intentional? This change breaks the compilation of software from the project www.xorp.org. In the file mrt/include/netinet/pim.h for the xorp software they define PIM messages types and use this code: /* * PIM message types */ #define PIM_HELLO 0x0 /* PIM-SM and PIM-DM*/ #define PIM_REGISTER0x1 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_REGISTER_STOP 0x2 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_JOIN_PRUNE 0x3 /* PIM-SM and PIM-DM*/ #define PIM_BOOTSTRAP 0x4 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_ASSERT 0x5 /* PIM-SM and PIM-DM*/ #define PIM_GRAFT 0x6 /* PIM-DM only */ #define PIM_GRAFT_ACK 0x7 /* PIM-DM only */ #define PIM_CAND_RP_ADV 0x8 /* PIM-SM only */ #define PIM_ALL_DF_ELECTION 0xa /* Bidir-PIM-SM only*/ You can see the bug report with more details in: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=494223 I am one of the two persons that is packaging xorp for Debian. Hi Frank, thank you for your feedback. Frank Lichtenheld wrote: > Package: libchipcard > Version: 4.2.0-1 > Severity: serious > > your package failed to build from source. I wonder how I managed to build the package from source in my own pbuilder. Why on earth did my pbuilder environment have such a zlib.h? Bug#497042: mediawiki: populateCategory.php script fails with PostgreSQL
Package: mediawiki Version: 1:1.13.0-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Using PostgreSQL 8.3.3 and Mediawiki 1.13. Upgraded from Mediawiki 1.12 to 1.13. Had to execute the populateCategory.php script inside maintenance due to the changes made by upstream in the software, so that new category and categorylinks tables are populated. Bug#473350: permissions problem
This appears to be a permissions problem - ggzd needs /var/lib/ggzd/ and any files within it to be chmod games.games It's hard to tell due to the problems with #473350 but once #473350 is fixed (with an m4 patch from upstream), a simple preinst allows ggzd to start normally whether or not /var/lib/ggzd exists or contains files. $ cat debian/ggzd.preinst #!/bin/sh set -e if [ -d /var/lib/ggzd ]; then chown games.games -R /var/lib/ggzd/ fi #DEBHELPER# I propose to upload a fixed package that also implements the fix for #490420. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
