Definitely, my concern was for the backwards compatibility.

Yes, lenny will have both python2.4 and python2.5. One workaround, at
least for the compiler.ast.From problem, would be to run destar with
#!/usr/bin/python2.4 instead of #!/usr/bin/python. But I think it
better to fix the bug rather than try to work around it, if possible.

I made sure the fix for #501207 was backwards-compatible. As for the
SyntaxError problem, I'm surprised it ever worked at all. Function
definitions with optional arguments before required positional arguments
aren't legal in 2.4 either (I'm not sure when/if they ever were). Maybe
quixote used to generate different actual Python code than it does now
in this case? Anyway, I'm pretty certain the patch for the SyntaxError
will work with python2.4, but I'll check tomorrow.

Sorry for your loss, really. In the meantime, we'll try to track this
down, but if nobody can reproduce it, we'll just downgrade the severity,
or close it, marking it unreproducible.

It's marked as a RC bug and, as you may know, we are trying to release.

Thanks a lot for these patches!

I have absolutely no clue about python and I don't think anyone in the
team does -- which effectively means that we need all the help we can get.

So, bear with me if this is a silly question: I was under the impression
that lenny will be shipped with both python 2.4 and 2.5 and that these
should be co-installable.
Are your fixes backwards compatible? It'd suck to fix this only to have

Needs help. That report is a security report from ocert. The full report
can be seen here: http://www.ocert.org/analysis/2008-008/analysis.txt

all fixes from 1.1.15 are backported to debian's 1.1.14 package already,
what is missing are issues 3A-3G.

TBH, since these issues are "Unexpected process termination and other
issues", I think that bug can be downgraded to "important". Darren, what
do you think?

Bug#475036: The alternative system needs better documentation

2008-10-06 Thread Daniel Moerner
Currently the non-kernel-package method of rebuilding Debian kernels
without producing a million extraneous debs is only documented in a
single place:

http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html#s-common-official

Hidden in this document is a description of how you can call
debian/rules build to extract the kernel sources, then make changes
and apply patches in a specific directory, and then build only certain
kernel images by calling certain parts of the config files. If
make-kpkg is to be deprecated in the short term, this alternative way
to produce debs probably needs to be more carefully explained and put
in other documentation.

As it stands, make-kpkg seems to work for a lot of users and is
documented all over the web. I'm not sure if there is a clear case
for its removal, since it doesn't have anything close to systematic
failure, from my experience at least.

Cheers,

I had to revert the patch after being unable to issue recursive queries
to bind. My IP is inside and ACL so it's sure bind wasn't obeying acl
settings.

Yes, we do need more detail; we need to know that *any* recipient of
Debian can redistribute the work to anyone else, modified or
unmodified, commercially or otherwise. (Or to know that these actions
are not allowed, so that we can remove the package from Debian.)

Any permission we receive for redistribution would need to be
universal and not specific to Debian. It's not clear that is what is
being given here.

I found some problem with current libgda3-sqlite which build against the old
libsqlite that it could not get the correct data value from db, only NULL
return in string fields.

Test environment:
 sqlite3, libsqlite3-0 (3.5.9-4)
 Test Code: http://www.gnome-db.org/CodeExampleGdaSelect

After rebuild libgda3 against libsqlite3-0 (3.5.9-4), it work just fine.

Therefore, I think now the new 3.0.4 is released with some problems solved.

http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/sources/libgda/3.0/libgda-3.0.4.tar.bz2

It's good idea to build the new one which also solve the problem that I found,
isn't it ?

Best Regards,
Neutron Soutmun

As iconv is part of glibc, all concerned Debian platforms should include
it. Though I don't mind about adding the autoconf change, it's just a
bigger diff in the end.

Bug#501356: gnokii: missing unicode support leads to data loss in opensync plugin

2008-10-06 Thread Pawel Kot
Hi,

Please note that it will break all platforms where iconv is not
present or requires additional libraries to be linked in. If that's
not the case for Debian, that's fine. Otherwise please use:

Package: libsnmp-python
Version: 5.4.1~dfsg-9
Severity: important

Hi!

I am trying to use libsnmp-python but get a lot of segfaults in many
occasions.

Something as simple as :
 oid = netsnmp.Varbind("ifIndex.5")
 result = netsnmp.snmpget(oid, Version=2, DestHost=host, Community=community)
 print result
gives a segfault.

I also get bogus results :
 oid = netsnmp.Varbind(".1.3.6.1.4.1.2272.1.3.3.1.8.5")
 result = netsnmp.snmpwalk(oid, Version=2, DestHost=host, Community=community)
 print result
gives (). While snmpwalk gives:
 SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.2272.1.3.3.1.8.5 = INTEGER: 2

If I use snmpget instead of snmpwalk, I get a segfault.

Here is a backtrace:

Bug#500734: The man page should change

2008-10-06 Thread Jim Studt

The upstream maintainer, Christos Zoulas responds:

I will fix the man page. The mime info is now part of the regular
magic

file, for example:

0 string MThdStandard MIDI data
!:mime audio/midi
8 beshort x (format %d)
10 beshort x using %d track
10 beshort >1 \bs
12 beshort&0x7fff x at 1/%d
12 beshort&0x8000 >0 SMPTE

This way we don't duplicate the magic in two places.

The proper resolution of this bug might be to just delete the part of
the man page about adding a ".mime" extension.
The new location of the MIME information is already correctly
documented in the 'magic' man page.

Bug#459567: fixed pth on its way

2008-10-06 Thread Thomas Viehmann
Hi,

I have NMUed to build-depend on the new glibc on hppa and verified that
the dirmngr segfault goes away with that version.
Given that the problem is probably not dirmngr-specific and will go away
once a newer libpth is installed, I suggest to close this bug without an
upload once pth 2.0.7-10.1 hits lenny.

Kind regards

Bug#500734: Analysis and Extent of Afflicted Packages

2008-10-06 Thread Jim Studt
The upstream source changed the way it handles files between etch and
lenny. In the process of adding an as yet undocumented feature to
process directories of magic files they have made is so the ".mime"
suffix must be explicitly put on to the filename when loading .mime
files.

I pulled the source of all of the Lenny packages affected by this
change, those which depend on libmagic1. A read of their source puts
them into 5 categories:

No Calls to magic_load() - unaffected
apache2
php5
roundcube

Only passes NULL to magic_load() - unaffected
aegis
anymeal
classpath
gmediaserver
irmp3
orange
mkvtoolnix
nepenthes
spalshy
worker

Just a wrapper for another language - unaffected
magic-haskell
mahoro
ocaml-magic

Passes a filename to magic_load(), but not with MAGIC_MIME* flags set
- unaffected

cdrkit

That leaves two packages that have problems:
dares - The "-m" command option will need a ".mime" on the end
mediatomb - The magic_file configuration entry will need a ".mime" on
the end

I have asked the upstream maintainer for guidance on his intent, if
the code should change or the man page.

Bug#501306: Incorrect device.map

2008-10-06 Thread Samat K Jain
I've seen this on one of my machines as well, I've fixed it with what I've
provided below.

I've 8 PATA disks (4 of which make up a RAID1 array used for booting), and 3
SATA disks. /boot's device was /dev/md0 (Dan appears to have a similar
configuration).

During some previous upgrade, /boot/grub/device.map was regenerated, and it was
missing some of the devices that made up the boot RAID array. That device.map
is missing devices seems to be the problem here.

Felix, as you mention, my solution was to run:

grub-mkdevicemap --no-floppy

which regenerated the device.map file. This time, the regenerated file was
correct, and update-grub ran successfully.

You could also edit device.map manually to make sure all required devices are
there.

2008-10-06 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
2008/10/3 Thomas Viehmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

In my opinion SBackup is not good enough to be released as part of
Lenny. While I lack the time to properly stabilize the package, other
contributors are more interested in working on a new version and not
on fixing old bugs many of which are non-trivial to fix without
significant refactoring of existing code.

Hi!

Thank you to submitter for the nice analysis of the issue.

KDE uses the information from hal to decide what options to use when
mounting.

On a vfat drive, hal gives the following:
hal-get-property --udi '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_64F8_AEF6' --
key volume.mount.valid_options
ro sync dirsync noatime nodiratime noexec quiet remount exec utf8 shortname=
codepage= iocharset= umask= dmask= fmask= uid= flush

KDE can of course specialcase and don't use the utf8 option on fat filesystems,
but I don't think it is the job for the frontend to know which options is safe
and unsafe.

But a untested for the kde3 media manager is here:

Thank you very much for testing. I just mailed the release team so they
hopefully allow the package into lenny.

Urm I forgot somehow that you're talking about update-grub not
grub-install.
But somewhere /dev/sda has to come from which isn't visible on the
report.
Is your /dev/md0 over sda or something like that?

Package installation directory is:

/usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-2.0

But Nautilus don't search extensions in this directory.

Nautilus search extensions only in:

/usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-1.0

I make a symbolic link in this directory to python extensions in
extensions-2.0:

Debian:/usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-1.0# \
ln -s /usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-2.0/python/ python

It can be a Nautilus Bug.

If you do `grub-install /dev/sda' then it should be in your device.map.
Either run "grub-mkdevicemap --no-floppy" or grub-install with `--recheck
--no-floppy'.

By the way grub2 does support the linux software raid fully, with it you
could just do `grub-install "(md0)"' if /dev/md0 is your /boot, to
install it on all raid disks.

For me an unofficial package of 5.4.3 would be more useful than the
official package of obsolete 5.3.4, no longer maintained upstream.

No. (i.e. It is up to the release managers, not me, but their policy on
the subject is clear.) The options are release sympa 5.4.3 with the most
severe bugs fixed or not release sympa and have the maintainer try to be
more timely about updates for the next release. The fact that it is that
late in the release cycle lead me to the initial suggestion to drop
sympa from lenny.

The "time" package supplies the /usr/bin/time binary, which is what the
time(1) manpage describes, and which does accept all the options listed
therein.

The fact that the error message you're receiving begins "bash:" means that
you're using bash's builtin version of "time", which only supports -p, as
documented in bash(1). If you want to run the version from time, use
/usr/bin/time explicitly.

I'm therefore closing this report as there is no bug here.

Bug#500231: mouse (buttons) not properly working in gnome

2008-10-06 Thread Patrick Schönfeld
Hi,

2008/10/6 Julien Cristau <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
> OK this is odd, the keyboard and mouse get added twice according to the
> log.

Well, the question is: Why?

> Why are the CorePointer and CoreKeyboard options commented out?
> Uncommenting them should fix this.

It does.

xorg.conf(5) says:
Option "Core Pointer"
When this is set, the input device is installed as the core (primary)
pointer device. There must be exactly one core
pointer. *If this option is not set here, or in the ServerLayout
section, or from the -pointer command line option,
then the first input device that is capable of being used as a
core pointer will be selected as the core pointer.*

Please note the part which has been enclosed by asterisks. According
to this the options are _not needed_ because Xorg should be able to
find it out itself and apart from this I guess that Xorg think this,
too:

(==) The core pointer device wasn't specified explicitly in the layout.
Using the first mouse device.
(==) The core keyboard device wasn't specified explicitly in the layout.
Using the first keyboard device.

After this is says:
(**) Configured Mouse: always reports core events

And as already said it worked in Etch so this is clearly a regression
(from the documented behaviour).

Best Regards,
Patrick

I can't reproduce this from a remote machine using a password either I'm
afraid (I thought it being remote might be the clue we needed).

I've put an i386 debug package at:
http://the.earth.li/~huggie/xfce4-mpc-plugin-debug/

Can you install that package and then also please install:
libglib2.0-0-dbg
libgtk2.0-0-dbg

libxfcegui4-4-dbg
xfce4-panel-dbg

Then if you restart the panel and send us the trace then hopefully we
can start to track this down.

Bug#492970: #492970 - nfs-common 1:1.1.3-1 client disallows access to files/directories where it should allow access - Debian Bug report logs

2008-10-06 Thread Chuck Lever

Hi Steve-

As I understand it, the documented bug refers to running nfs-utils
1.1.3 on kernels older than 2.6.22 (ie the problem is with the legacy
mount command, not with the in-kernel mount parser, which has a
different, less harmful bug that masks these symptoms).

To reproduce this you need to force the use of the legacy mount
command that parses mount options in user space and passes a binary
data structure to the kernel via mount(2).

Is that why turning on NFS mount debugging on does not provide any
debug

messages?

Yes.

I believe that the Debian nfs-utils forces use of the legacy mount
command.

That's why Debian hits this, and other testers missed it before 1.1.3
was released.

I think Debian forces legacy mode because they hit some other bugs
with text-based mounts. These should be mostly addressed with 2.6.27.

mount -o sec=none gere:/home /home<-- this results in sec=null in

yes, off course I can do this. Just reproduced the problem with the old
configuration and generated the attached log file.

I may have a different 'ear' then you, but it really does not sound like
this to me ;). Well, the configuration file is attached and I can guarantee
you that this file works perfect with Debian Etch. If it now does not
work with Lenny anymore this ain't a configuration problem, but a
upgrade path problem. Because either the new auto detection code should
not cause such problems (I guess that it is responsible, because if I
understand the log right then Josselin is right that the mouse is
detected twice) or if it would really be a configuration problem that is
specific to the current Xorg version (appearently, because it worked in
Etch) then the upgrade should have updated the configuration or at a
very least should have warned me.

Best Regards,
Patrick

OK this is odd, the keyboard and mouse get added twice according to the
log.

Why are the CorePointer and CoreKeyboard options commented out?
Uncommenting them should fix this.

Cheers,

Bug#500075: Can't reproduce any more

Thanks for trying to reproduce this and the followups.
How about closing the bug for now (the usual course is tag

really

okay, I'm downgrading this bug for now to important since passkey-agent isn't
shipped compiled by default.

It seems that address specific passkey agent isn't working for 3.36, though one
should use always --default. I'm about to upload a package which ships such
agent.

Hello,

the citadel-server package creates /etc/services during postinst.

In a clean unstable buildd chroot I get the following:

# apt-get install citadel-server
[...]
# cat /etc/services
citadel 504/tcp

A subsequent "apt-get install netbase" leads to the following message:
[...]
Setting up netbase (4.32) ...

Configuration file `/etc/services'
==> File on system created by you or by a script.
==> File also in package provided by package maintainer.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** services (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

The /etc/services file is normally provided by the "netbase" package.

If the "netbase" package is installed first, the citadel-server package
will append a "citadel 504/tcp" line to /etc/services.

I do not think that "citadel-server" should create or change /etc/services
during postinst.

The attached patch disables this and some other possibly unwanted things
(e.g. changes to /etc/inittab) in setup.c.

If the citadel entry in /etc/services is really necessary
it should probably be added to the etc-services template in the
"netbase" package.

Regards
Andreas Jochens

Bug#501306: update-grub fails with raid1 boot partition

2008-10-06 Thread Dan Poltawski
Package: grub
Version: 0.97-47
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

When installing new kernels onto the system, the kernel package post
instalation fails on update-grub (output attached below), this
problem has also affected a number of my collegues, all of us have
a raid1 configuration on our boot partition.

I tried to get to the bottom of the problem by running the following
steps:

Running update-grub manually produces the errored status:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# echo $?
1

Upon investigation of the update-grub script, I tracked the problem down to
line 155 of update grub:
GRUB_LEGACY_0_BASED_PARTITIONS=1 grub-probe --device-map=${device_map} -t
drive -d "$1" 2> /dev/null

I discovered the options that were being used and this is the command which is
being run:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# /usr/sbin/grub-probe --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map -t
drive -d "/dev/sda1"
error: cannot open `/dev/sdf'
error: cannot open `/dev/sdf'
grub-probe: error: Cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1. Check your
device.map.

This results in convert() returning error status.

Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance

Hello,

When a user appearing in the sudoers file use the following command :
$sudo mc

Midnight Commander starts within a root shell.
Look at the bottom left of the mc screen : [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#
Also, 'whoami' reports 'root'.
Then the user as full access to the filesystem has the root user.

It occurs even if the sudoers file do not allow access to the /usr/bin/su
command to the user.

I don't know if it is a feature, but it looks strange to me. I think that
system administrators using sudo functionnalities should be aware of this
behaviour.

PS : This behaviour occurs also with Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy), on a standard desktop
installation.

Thanks.

If you allow "sudo bash" that also gives you a root shell, just as "sudo
vim" when you use vim's shell escaping. The admin should be aware that
when he allows a command to be ran as root, everything that command can do
can be done as root. As it happens, mc is a complete environment which
allows amongst others to execute commands.

I see no bug here - I'm closing this as it's a fundamental feature of how
UNIX-like systems work.

it really sounds like your config was just wrong.

Bug#500801: hardcoding extension paths....

2008-10-06 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Even better would be if the extension path was not hardcoded, but
fetched from the library it was built against...

pkg-config --variable=extensiondir libnautilus-extension

(I don't know if there's a python-way of doing the same, but there should
be or the python install scripts should be able to use the system command.)

Hi;

I can't duplicate this (not too surprising). Can you tell us a bit more
about your environment? What imap server are you using?
Do you get the same crash if you move your icedove configuration aside
and reconfigure? What about as a different local user?

No, this is not a security hole. Not even a bug, BTW.

It rather starts a root subshell itself.

Yes, this is by design. It also happens when you use "sudo bash", for
instance.

Administrators using sudo should know how it works, indeed. If they
don't want to give users full access to the system, they must not let
them run mc or any other program that offers file management facilities
and shell access.

Hi Thomas

I was trying to reproduce this problem again but could not do so. I
guess this was triggered by some slim corner case (the output did
indicate some corrupted ogg header, I guess -- but I have no idea how to
corrupt some data on an mtp device so no prov for this).

If I'm seeing this again I'll tell you.

Regards

Well, there is and there has always been:

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0006 Version=
N: Name="ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0

B: KEY=1f 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Also udev creates devices for it:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# ls -l /dev/input/mouse0
crw-rw 1 root root 13, 32 6. Okt 13:33 /dev/input/mouse0

Additional, changing it to /dev/input/mice (which also exists) does
not work either..

Nothing is wrong, unless there is a second mouse configured that sends
the same events to the server. For example:
Section "ServerLayout"

InputDevice "Generic Mouse"

indeed it seems to be related to the Xorg configuration. In fact I had a
configuration that worked fine back in Etch and is now broken. Removing
the mouse block (and every reference) entireley, so that the autodetection code

2008-10-06 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: firmware-iwlwifi
Version: 0.13
Followup-For: Bug #501193

Hi, I encountered the same problem as mentioned by the OP. My laptop has
an hardware switch to enable or disable wireless networking. If I boot
my machine while the hardware switch is in "wlan off" position dmesg
will say, that the switch needs to be on to get wireless to work - so
this is quite what it should be. But switching the hardware switch to
"wlan on" doesn't do a thing. Nothing happens, no dmesg entry or other
stuff. Only if the hardware switch says "wlan on" while loading the iwl3945
module (during boot or with modprobe -r | modprobe) the stuff will work.
In this case switching off and on does work like a charm.

With kind regards
Dirk
