Yes; It has caused many different issues in the code (strcat without checks leading to seg fault, stupid limitations in sizing, huge allocation of memory where it's not useful, ...) Depending on the situation, just including some malloc's/free's are gratuitous artificial complexity. Well if it's done at a sufficiently low level, it's not a problem IMO. It's relatively fast, you use what you need only, and adapt to machine resources, not to fixed barriers (nobody will ever need more than 640KB syndrom ;-) And, anyway, if said code is not used in a non-standard ways, it is marked auto by the compiler and disposed when the scope of the function ends. THere were some recursive and interesting usage + some statics. I usually favor statically compiled languages, but I'm not opposed to Perl, *if* the programs don't inflate the memory requirements of the interpreter too much. Will have to measure that. But frankly looking at the code since 8 years now, and more precisely during the last 4, most of what was written in C should never have been written in C !! : The code still contains more than 600 system calls ! Or how to use C as a scripting language. There are some parts that could benefit from staying in C, but only a few IMO. We would like to want the code to work even on small platforms, after all. Yes but nowadays it's far from being the majority of users. Now we could target netbooks, phones, ... why not. But that would anyway require a good re-architecture/re-write. And perl is available on so many platform it shouldn't be a problem. And I always found the perf great (never looked too much at the memory side). Sure, but I'd guess that they may not be that interesting, now that the versions have diverged a bit. I'm including it here anyway. Please, note that the patch has already three patches in it (patch in patch format, to be handled with quilt). I don't know quilt myself. IIUC it aggregates patches. Why not, as Andree can say to you, I tend to prefer single (small ;-) patches in order to study them before inclusion. It seems that the lzma file is not clean: lzma: Decoder error Could you resend it again please ? (start is on control file modifications, and I'll apply them without issue). Very nice. I am short on space and like to keep my backups under 500MB, so that I can use dvdisaster (yes, I am a bit paranoid). OK, in a slightly tangent comment, it seems that the version 2.2.7 has problems with Linux images that have not been compressed with gzip (newer kernels allow bzip2 and lzma compressed images). Do you have support for that? Humm. Not at the moment. Right now, mondo dies trying to be smart about the kernel that I compiled if I use one of those images, but it is wrong in its decision. It's in GetInitrdFilesystemToUse and only supports gziped compressed kernel. Can easily be adapted (this code was made by Andree BTW for Debian originaly and was merged ;-) And, BTW, why are there differences regarding burning CDs/CD-RWs? I can't really see the point (besides the fact that CD-RWs may have to be blanked before writing them). I know there are diffs for drive that can eject/inject or not but I also never understood why they were considerd separately indeed. Probably more cleanup to do. I absolutely agree that sane defaults are essential. But letting the experienced user override the defaults is important to have a good share of the target market for this tool. Which is aplea for config file which are right now missing in mondo. It's in my trunk tree (useless BTW except for taking some ideas I tried). No problems with postponing things. But I am much more favorable to gradual changes than to radical changes. +1 ! Over-engineering is a problem that should be avoided. A certain degree of generality is good, but not that much. Vast question ;-) Great. Now that GCC 4.4 has test coverage, we can see which paths are used and which ones are not. I'm interested if you can give example of how we could apply that to mondo. Size is still important (and will always be), but 1MB of a 650MB CD wouldn't make that much difference. It's a bit more today. mindi is around 30MB. Wouldn't it be a good idea to switch the config file to use xterm instead of x-terminal-emulator? Having x-terminal-emulator pointing to a Terminal using tabs is not uncommon (especially since slim might be a natural choice for Xfce users, which usually means x-terminal-emulator points to xfce4-terminal which has tabs support). Bug#545364: Maybe kernel problem?
I've got this too. I found out that if I use linux-image-2.6.30-1-amd64=2.6.30-5 (instead of -6) my system boots again. But I'm not sure whether it's simply a kernel problem, or just related because of some size difference in the image. My out-of-range pointer is 0x6401900; in case the video hardware helps to find some common bit, it's a ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200]. I know On i386-pc (and amd64), the grub package never updates the installed
version of GRUB automatically. However, this has rendered the system
unbootable for me twice now. I know I'm running something unstable, but users
should NOT be expected to know how to fix an unbootable system. There should
at least be a debconf question of whether to run grub-install.
The error I'm getting is Unknown command: initrd similar to #513592 and
#497791 (and probably others).

Dear maintainer,
I've prepared an NMU for discover-data (versioned as 2.2008.06.25+nmu1)
and uploaded it to DELAYED/7. Please feel free to tell me if I should
delay it longer.
The patch, which you can find attached, ports the Python scripts shipped
under /usr/share/tools/ to legacy Python APIs, removing the need (and
the dep) of python-xml. Part of the patch is from Ben Hutching (from
what concerns reduce-xml).
A few notes:
- I've tested the new scripts by running the non-shipped Makefile and
Makefile.update which seem to be the only part of discover-data using
those scripts
- /usr/share/tools/ is not a terribly good path, wouldn't it be more
appropriate to ship those scripts under /usr/share/discover-data/ or
so?
- debian/control still contains a XS-Vcs-Svn which should be turned in
Vcs-Svn as it is now officially supported by dpkg-dev
I've refrained from doing other changes than the Python porting in the
NMU to ease integration of my patch.

I've been using xlock for years and never had any issue with its
crashing. May be it is due to the fact that when I want my screen
locked, I do not care to watch running goblins on the screen, therefore
I use
XLock.mode: blank
in my .Xresources. May be just making blank mode to be default (unless
explicitly asked to 'shoot in the foot' with some fancy one)? or may be
even

I alread chmoded o+rw /dev/random, but this has not helped. $ ls -l /dev/random crw-rw-rw- 1 root dialout 1, 8 9. Sep 11:36 /dev/random $ sudo /etc/init.d/slapd start Starting OpenLDAP: slapd - failed: Fatal: no entropy gathering module detected My hunch was that with my update of the sysv-rc bits something is no longer detected/started that was started before. Just while panicking around, /etc/init.d/urandom start does not make a difference, the problem was $ ls -l /dev/urandom crw-rw 1 root dialout 1, 9 9. Sep 18:13 /dev/urandom A chmod o+rw /dev/urandom fixed the problem, i.e. slapd then started. I don't know what the problem is here. Somehow the group dialout for /dev/urandom seems strange. Hi,
with the new version of mpd, I experience skipping audio about once per
second, where a skip could be described as a crackling noise followed by
a fast forward of a fraction of a second. I verified this behaviour for
FLAC, Ogg and MP3 files.
A downgrade to the previous version 0.15.1-1 restores smooth playback.
My audio output section of the mpd config reads as follows:

This is a race in the test: if the child server is slow enough, the parent client will have failed at the point the child calls accept(), and the child will block. Adding 'sleep 1' in the child will make it fail reliably, and I suppose adding something like 'sleep 2' in the parent should make it go away. This uninitialized $proto sounds interesting. Yeah, netbase is clearly missing. I don't think that really matters as IO::Socket::INET defaults to 'tcp' (and gets a hardcoded number from the Socket module instead of using getprotobyname() since Perl 5.10.0). The first connect is supposed to time out because 192.0.2.1 is unreachable everywhere (see RFC 3330.) Cheers, Uhm why didn't you just choose `execute a shell in /dev/sda1' or whatever your / is from the rescue options? The problem is that you didn't bind mounted /dev so there are no devices for your disks because udev creates them which isn't run in a chroot. If you choose the `execute a shell in' option /dev gets mounted and so grub-probe should work. AC_SEARCH_LIBS is always going to fail:

Note that this test checks for extended SQL syntax defined through
SQL::Statement::Syntax¹, and, given my time constraints right now, I
cannot devote more time to understanding it. I will forward this bug
