Bug#600320: Installation: set password for root; did not create a user; could not login after 1st reboot.
Quoting John Hunter (jmd...@btinternet.com): Package: installation-reports Version: 2.42 Severity: serious Tags: d-i Justification: Unknown Hello, thanks for your report... I was installing squeeze over an old version of Ubuntu which had users already set up in /home. I set up the root password but declined to create any [more] users. The install apparently finished OK and then I rebooted. Upon reboot, the system would not let me log in as root so that I could not manually set up /etc/password, /etc/shadow, /etc/group and /etc/sudoers. I then had to resort to using the CD in recovery mode to set up the users. If the setup script has not created a user then root should be allowed to log in; otherwise one's laptop is as useful as a bag of slates. I would call myself experienced; I am a retired comp-sci academic with *nix experience going back to System VII. I have seen install glitches in my time, but none as stupid as this. In all these years of experience, have you ever learned about sending possible useful information? ;-) For instance, with such a problem, sending the system's /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd would have been useful. The same stands for relevant log files, such as /var/log/auth.log. Additionnally, having log files from /var/log/installer could help (but, admittedly, this you couldn't guess). As is, our only chance to examine your bug is by trying to reproduce it. In passing, I should mention that on the 6th October, I tried to install squeeze using the network install image (191MB). That got as far as installing a bootstrap system then did not seem to have a script or any instructions to load anything more: thus resulting in another bag of slates. Was that ever tested? Daily builds are daily builds: they're built every day. Do you imagine that, in Debian factories, there is a full row of monkeys whose job is testing each and every bit produced in the project? So, no, daily builds are not testing systematically...and sometimes they fail. This is how development works, I'm afraid: the best testers are our users... signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#600320: Installation: set password for root; did not create a user; could not login after 1st reboot.
Quoting Otavio Salvador (ota...@ossystems.com.br): Hello John, On Fri, Oct 15, 2010 at 9:06 PM, John Hunter jmd...@btinternet.com wrote: I was installing squeeze over an old version of Ubuntu which had users already set up in /home. I then had to resort to using the CD in recovery mode to set up the users. From your description it looks like you did not formated the partition of data. Debian Installer cannot be installed (and it is not designed to be used in this case) to install over an existent system. In case you have a /home in a separated partition it can be reused but the system _need_ to be installed into a fresh partition. Hmmm, still. John explained that he specifically did not create any user, so I fail to see how re-using the /home partition would create a problem: the installer should then not write there, should it? His use case is a fairly valid use case. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#583371: nut: diff for NMU version 2.4.3-1.1
I see a list of .deb packages at the URL mentioned on Message 15. Is it advised to wget these dpkg -i them, or will aptitude upgrade be able to handle it in the next few days? Those ones were Ubuntu packages. You can download the packages that were built for Debian from http://ftp-master.debian.org/deferred/ (be sure to only get the ones from 15th October). Alternatively, those packages should arrive in unstable in a couple of days, and roughly 12 days from now be available in squeeze. I would welcome the testing if you want to confirm the problem is fixed. -- Tim Retout dioc...@debian.org signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Bug#600310: wrong collation(?) order for et_EE.UTF-8 causes regexps to fail matching randomly
On Sat, Oct 16, 2010 at 01:47:42AM +0400, Michael Tokarev wrote: There's a bug in et_EE.UTF-8 locale definition causing some latin chars to be treated as non-letters. Wikipedia shows the following alphabet: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, š, z, ž, t, u, v, w, õ, ä, ö, ü, x, y So a-z matches only half the alphabet. t to y are _after_ z. I.e., the latin letter t does not match [a-z] regexp. As expected. Use the character classes if you want all small characters. This is a critical issue unfortunately, because it makes various regex failing to match, breaking random components. In the actual problem case the issue were that many cron jobs were not running on the system for a mysterious reason, and the problem was because cron uses a regexp to filter invalid cronjob names, which is /^[a-zA-Z0-9_-]+$/. If you want ascii rules, force LC_ALL=C or at least LC_COLLATE=C. So cron is the culprit. Bastian -- Landru! Bug#600310: reassigning to cron
reassign 600310 cron retitle 600310 cron uses regexps that return wrong results depending on locale severity 600310 serious thanks Ok, as stated in two previous emails, it's problem in cron, not in glibc/locales. Sadly, but... ;) And the severity isn't critical but serious (makes cron to not process some crontabs unexpectedly). Fortunately, another program mentioned in this bugreport, run-parts, does not call setlocale() so is not affected. As to the solution, I'd say we should either reset LC_COLLATE, or retrieve default charset using some other, less intrusive, way, or use comparisons like (c='a' c='z') (or isalnum), instead of using regexps with classes. Bug#582998: pidgin-sipe: diff for NMU version 1.9.0-1.1
Miguel, I suspect the GPG signature failed because you are not in the debian keyring? I have reviewed your debdiff, and it fixes the build (bug #582998). It also fixes bug #597437, which is currently only marked 'important'. The release team have updated their unblock policy to only include fixes for RC bugs: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2010/10/msg2.html I'm therefore going to make a new NMU to just fix the FTBFS. Since you probably know more about pidgin-sipe than me, can you tell me whether #597437 should in fact be upgraded to serious? I would also welcome an opinion on the other bug mentioned in the 1.9.0 release notes: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sipe/files/sipe/pidgin-sipe-1.9.0/NEWS/view Thanks, -- Tim Retout dioc...@debian.org signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

I think it's reasonable for gstreamer0.10-alsa to use the default device. But perhaps it should be checking the capabilities of it somehow... not sure. I'll leave the bug on gstreamer for now - alsa-base seems to have loads of bugs about this already, e.g. #586648 (marked 'wontfix' with the advice to read /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/README.Debian.gz). I've had alsa order my pcspkr driver first on some machines. I think one workaround is to edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-blacklist.conf to blacklist the driver. I also seem to have a file /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf that I created at some point to get the right ordering. -- Tim Retout dioc...@debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Moritz Muehlenhoff muehlenh...@univention.de wrote: Package: tiff Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole Please see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2010-3087 This patch should fix it: http://bugzilla.maptools.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2140 Upstream rejected the patch in their bug 2140, and the patch's author said it was only a partial fix. The CVE references a bug in Novell's bugzilla, but even after creating an account, I don't have access to read the bug. So I'm really not sure what to do here. I could just blindly accept the patch, but then I'm permanently deviating from upstream. Should I discuss with upstream? I could grab Red Hat's latest SRPM and see how long they've been using this patch, or I could dig through upstream's CVS repository and see what the status is there. -- Jay Berkenbilt q...@debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#594379: haveged: FTBFS: Architecture mismatch on rd. Requires v9|v9a|v9b; requested architecture is sparclite.
Hi, Sven Hartge wrote (13 Sep 2010 23:21:35 GMT) : Steve Kostecke said: Jakub Wilk said: haveged failed to build from source on sparc[0]: haveged only supports x86 and amd64. This is not completely true. The code should still support SPARC (and ia64 and ppc), but the Debian SPARC port has a 32bit (aka sparclite) userland (with a 64bit kernel) and haveged wants to use an assembler instruction only available in v9 aka 64bit mode: Some bits of 0.9-3 fix a pretty annoying bug (#565755), so I'd really like a fixed package to go into Squeeze. OTOH, even if breaking it for Sparc while fixing it for three other architectures could seem reasonable, we may be able to do better... if people with Sparc knowledge speak up. Having had a look to the packaging changes log, it seems weird to me 0.9-1 builds ok but 0.9-3 doesn't. Can someone confirm 0.9-1 at least works ok on sparc? - If it does not, I don't think this bug should prevent pushing 0.9-3 to Squeeze: this would fix the package behaviour for some people, and introduce no regression for others. - If it does, here is the plan I would favor: either Sparc porters help fixing this bug, or 0.9-3 shall be pushed to Squeeze for other architectures. Maybe this is the same as #593375. Since some recent version, udev does not longer create the symlinks in /dev/disk/by-label and by-uuid for some cases. E.g. I have non of the by-label/by-uuid links created for any of my ext4-filesystems. I do however get the UUID links for my LUKS (dm-crypt) devices added. A friend of mine (also with sid) gets not even those. Bug#600423: linux-2.6: too many open files

Bug#583371: nut: diff for NMU version 2.4.3-1.1
Installed only this: http://ftp-master.debian.org/deferred/nut_2.4.3-1.1_amd64.deb Problem solved. Thank you. On Sat, 16 Oct 2010 11:00 +0100, Tim Retout dioc...@debian.org wrote: I see a list of .deb packages at the URL mentioned on Message 15. -- Tim Retout dioc...@debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#583371: 583371 + nut_2.4.3-1.1_amd64.deb = 354429
Upon installing the 2.4.3-1.1 version that enables communication with the UPS, I discover another issue which I have detailed in an adjacent bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=354429#30 Is there a particular version I could revert to in order to confirm the changes made to the 2.4.3-1.1 are not contributing factors? In other words, had I reverted rather than upgraded in order to resolve bug 583371, would bug 354429 still be an issue? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
