Perhaps opening an issue in python-pyelftools upstream would do the trick. -- Arturo Borrero González Hi Arturo, if you are interested in tackling this, I would proceed like this * you should confirm that python-pyelftools ignore dynamic linker configuration (I suspect this is true); it would be good to extract a minimal Python program using pyelftools that shows this * if it is true, then a bug report is justified; however, the upstream may consider this to be be due to Debian multi-arch, and be reluctant to fix it I don't have much time for this bug right now, and although it is RC, I don't see it as such. Bug#793465: DoS and privilege escalation by local users (CVE-2015-3245 and CVE-2015-3246)
Source: libuser Version: 1:0.56.9.dfsg.1-1.2 Severity: grave Tags: security upstream patch During a code audit by Qualys, multiple libuser-related vulnerabilities were discovered that can allow local users to perform denial-of-service and privilege-escalation attacks: - Race condition in password file update (CVE-2015-3246, Important) A flaw was found in the way the libuser library handled the /etc/passwd file. Even though traditional programs like passwd, chfn, and chsh work on a temporary copy of /etc/passwd and eventually use the rename() function to rename the temporary copy, libuser modified /etc/passwd directly. Unfortunately, if anything went wrong during these modifications, libuser may have left/etc/passwd in an inconsistent state. This behavior could result in a local denial-of-service attack; in addition, when combined with a second vulnerability (CVE-2015-3245, described below), it could result in the escalation of privileges to the root user. - Lack of validation of GECOS field contents (CVE-2015-3245, Moderate) It was found that the chfn function of the userhelper utility did not properly filter out newline characters. The chfn function implemented by the userhelper utility verified that the fields it was given on the command line were valid (that is, contain no forbidden characters). Unfortunately, these forbidden characters (:,=) did not include the \n character and allowed local attackers to inject newline characters into the /etc/passwd file and alter this file in unexpected ways. A local attacker could use this flaw to corrupt the /etc/passwd file, which could result in a denial-of-service attack on the system. Both issues have been fixed upstream, and shipped in relase 0.62. Please mention the CVE numbers in the changelog when fixing the issue. Bug#793487: squid: fails to install: FATAL: Ipc::Mem::Segment::create failed to shm_open(/squid-cf__metadata.shm): (13) Permission denied

Bug#793492: Should this package be removed?
Package: azureus Severity: serious The version of azureus currently in the archive has been uploaded in 2009 and it many upstream releases behind. It has been dropped from testing back in 2013 and the last upload was in 2011. Since there's apparently no current maintenance interest in Vuze/Azureus and since there are plenty of other Torrent clients in Debian I suggest we remove it from the archive. If you agree, please reassign this bug to ftp.debian.org Cheers, Moritz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#793484: squeeze update of expat?
Hello Laszlo, the Debian LTS team would like to fix the security issues which are currently open in the Squeeze version of expat: https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2015-1283 Would you like to take care of this yourself? We are still understaffed so any help is always highly appreciated. If yes, please follow the workflow we have defined here: http://wiki.debian.org/LTS/Development If that workflow is a burden to you, feel free to just prepare an updated source package and send it to debian-...@lists.debian.org (via a debdiff, or with an URL pointing to the the source package, or even with a pointer to your packaging repository), and the members of the LTS team will take care of the rest. Indicate clearly whether you have tested the updated package or not. If you don't want to take care of this update, it's not a problem, we will do our best with your package. Just let us know whether you would like to review and/or test the updated package before it gets released. Thank you very much. Raphaël Hertzog, on behalf of the Debian LTS team. PS: A member of the LTS team might start working on this update at any point in time. You can verify whether someone is registered on this update in this file: https://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/secure-testing/data/dla-needed.txt?view=markup -- Raphaël Hertzog ◈ Debian Developer Support Debian LTS: http://www.freexian.com/services/debian-lts.html Learn to master Debian: http://debian-handbook.info/get/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#793539: KDE system settings
Package: systemsettings Version: 4:5.3.2-2 Severity: grave Tags: stretch,KDE * What did I do to cause the bug? I am using the testing branch on an amd64 system with the KDE desktop. 2015/0724 I made a dist-upgrade and found out that my dual monitor setup was no longer recognized. I tried to launch System Settings to fix but got this error instead: http://i.imgur.com/RQAOK4c.png Several launcher icons were also disabled in desktop. * What did I do to fix? Downgraded System Settings to stable version, it launched but did not work right as the Display applet still was not seeing my monitors. After that I dist-upgraded again, it went back to behavior previously described. Please help. Thank you -- *Carlos Kosloff* Office: (954) 283-8828 Cell: (954) 464-8822 Fax: (888) 854-5440

Bug#789518: wagon2: FTBFS in sid
I took a look at this issue, and while I haven't solved the problems I've found some clues which might be useful for the next person. One of the things I found was an Ubuntu build log [1] from when it built successfully. I know some packages have Ubuntu-deltas, but for the most part its the same set of packages as Debian had at the time. adding libxbean-java to Build-Depends makes no difference. Looking at the build log, it looks it was already pulled in due to some dependency or another. I tried looking at whether the missing class in question had changed in any obvious way in the meantime, but didn't find anything suspicious. I also briefly experimented with replacing libxbean-java and a couple of other packages with .debs from stable, but didn't see any difference. What I believe is happening is that some test is run, which happens to extend PlexusTestCase from plexus-container-default [2] which again ends up in libxbean-java, does some reflection magic (?) and fails to find a class. And it looks like the problem is that something in this chain has changed since the package was built. What I find really interesting is that I found another RC bug [3] which has a strangely similar (but not identical!) stacktrace and ends up complaining about not finding the same class. And this also goes through PlexusTestCase and the rest of the chain. So while I don't know what's going on, I'm fairly sure these two are connected in some way. Bug#793479: tcpdump: tcpdump prints dropped privs to user message to stdout, should be stderr
Hi, On Fri, Jul 24, 2015 at 01:57:29PM +0200, Hilko Bengen wrote: I have been using tcpdump like this for ages: /usr/sbin/tcpdump -Z $user -S0 -p -n U -B $bufsz -i $iface -w - $rule [...] Post-processing of the resulting streams broke after upgrading to jessie because tcpdump prints that bit of information about dropping privileges to standard output. Hmm, that's unfortunate, and the fix is trivial enough that I can probably get it into stable for the next point release. However, I don't agree with the severity of this bug. Bug#793492: Should this package be removed?
Le 24/07/2015 17:30, Moritz Muehlenhoff a écrit : The version of azureus currently in the archive has been uploaded in 2009 and it many upstream releases behind. It has been dropped from testing back in 2013 and the last upload was in 2011. Since there's apparently no current maintenance interest in Vuze/Azureus and since there are plenty of other Torrent clients in Debian I suggest we remove it from the archive. Hi Moritz, I'm interested in reviving Azureus, but that's a low priority item on my todo list. Stephen Nelson also voiced its interest [1]. Squid needs the /dev/shm device to be mounted in its normal chmod 777 state. I believe that is taken care of on regular machinery by the init script / system boot dependencies. Bug#792485: etckeeper/git sets SSH host key perms to 644
Hi, Thanks for the bug report. Normally, such bugs should be reported to secur...@debian.org with the package maintainer in CC instead of in a public bug tracker, but let's deal with it now that it's public... I can confirm the bug: doing a checkout or a reset exposes private files in `/etc` to all users, bypassing metadata saved in `/etc/.etckeeper`. A workaround is to setup the `20restore-etckeeper` script as a post-checkout, post-merge and post-commit hooks: ln -s /etc/etckeeper/init.d/20restore-etckeeper /etc/.git/hooks/post-checkout ln -s /etc/etckeeper/init.d/20restore-etckeeper /etc/.git/hooks/post-commit ln -s /etc/etckeeper/init.d/20restore-etckeeper /etc/.git/hooks/post-merge Unfortunately, no git hook is ran when you do git reset: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/17247402/is-there-a-git-hook-that-runs-on-git-reset So basically, we are screwed: there's no way for etckeeper to fix this bug for all git commands. This would be a git bug, I believe... I'm hesitant in doing an upload that fixes this because it will give a false sense of security: some commands will work, others won't. I'd love to hear from Joey, the upstream author, about how to fix this better. The only other thing i could think of that may fix this are smudge filters, that run whenever code is checked out. In any case, any of those hacks will make any working tree operations much slower because the above hook runs *all* the permission changes, not only the relevant ones... Any other bright ideas? Bug#792485: etckeeper/git sets SSH host key perms to 644
Control: tags -1 -security Control: severity -1 normal Actually, looking back at this, this is not a vulnerability directly with etckeeper, or at least, nothing that wasn't already clearly explained in the README. To quote it: ## security warnings First, a big warning: By checking /etc into version control, you are creating a copy of files like /etc/shadow that must remain secret. Anytime you have a copy of a secret file, it becomes more likely that the file contents won't remain secret. etckeeper is careful about file permissions, and will make sure that repositories it sets up don't allow anyone but root to read their contents. However, you *also* must take care when cloning or copying these repositories, not to allow anyone else to see the data. That seems pretty clear to me... So I am downgrading this to a normal issue and removing the security tag as the security implications of running etckeeper are clearly stated from the start. Bug#790526: gri bug on texinfo
Thanks, Peter. I did a bit of work on this, namely 1. clean gri.texi as suggested 2. remove texinfo.tex as suggested (from “.” and from “./doc”) 3. update some dates and version in gri.texi and other files but unfortunately I cannot build anymore on OSX. I get as follows. make cd . automake-1.14 --gnu configure.ac:15: error: required file './compile' not found configure.ac:15: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'compile' doc/Makefile.am:5: error: required file 'doc/texinfo.tex' not found doc/Makefile.am:5: 'automake --add-missing' can install ‘texinfo.tex' It’s so long since I’ve worked with the GNU auto tools that I am not sure how to proceed. I tried doing automake —add-missing which was suggested by the above, and then I found that make make check make install worked fine. So, things seem reasonably ok, I guess. For reasons I don’t understand, git status does not notice the newly-installed doc/texinfo.tex file, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing since it gets added easily anyway, and since debian seems not to like it. I guess the next step I’d ask of PSG is to try git pull ./configure make and whatever steps are involved in the debian build. — Dan. I've done it, you can get it via dget http://www.ma-aya.net/~henrich/debian/package/temp/gawk-doc_4.1.3-0.1.dsc Please consider to accept changes. -- Regards, Hideki Yamane henrich @ debian.or.jp/org http://wiki.debian.org/HidekiYamane -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#790526: gri bug on texinfo
Hi Dan, MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hope you are well. I tracked down the bug that occurs while building gri.texi to two instances of an old texinfo.tex file bundled in gri that dates from 2009. Simply deleting the files fixes the bug with one minor change: The new texinfo doesn't like \code{=E9} in gri.texi. The easy fix is to rephrase as: As you type, the quote mark will dissappear, and reappear as an accent on the @code{e}. And then, Gri will recognize this accented and it will draw the accent on the axis label. However, the paragraphs on inserting accented characters in Emacs date back to Emacs19 and Emacs20 (and we are now at Emacs24) and are obsolete. People who type in accented characters know how to do it now, and we are complicated by UTF-8 now as well. I'd simply delete them. If you are busy with other stuff, I'll just upload a point release to Debian to close the bug and let Gri migrate back to testing. If you can release a new gri within a week, I'll hold off and upload that instead. There's a buglet in gri-mode with Emacs24 that I'd like to track down. Something changed with idle timers. Hopefully I'll find it quickly and that fix can go in a new versions as well. Peter -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#791964: gdm3: upgrade causes X session to be terminated
Control: severity -1 important Am 24.07.2015 um 14:22 schrieb Michael Biebl: On Fri, 10 Jul 2015 09:38:56 -0700 Josh Triplett j...@joshtriplett.org wrote: For a short-term fix, how about quickly re-introducing the gdm3 workaround? Then, we can experiment with possible ways to drop it and (more) carefully test the upgrade paths with packages that haven't been uploaded yet, and subsequently with experimental. I did that now in 3.14.2-2. Would be great if someone can help track this down. I kept this bug open since I want to re-purpose it for tracking the process of re-adding BusName again. But I'm lowering the severity, so the package migrate to testing now. Bug#793479: tcpdump: tcpdump prints dropped privs to user message to stdout, should be stderr
Package: tcpdump Version: 4.6.2-5 Severity: grave Control: fixed -1 4.7.4-1 Control: tag -1 jessie I have been using tcpdump like this for ages: /usr/sbin/tcpdump -Z $user -S0 -p -n U -B $bufsz -i $iface -w - $rule The important thing here is that tcpdump drops privileges to $user and writes the pcap file to standard output ... which gets piped to another process. Post-processing of the resulting streams broke after upgrading to jessie because tcpdump prints that bit of information about dropping privileges to standard output. This has been fixed in 4.7.4-1 currently part of stretch. Since a backport of that is available via jessie-backports, I'm going to use that on the machines affected.
