Thanks for the additional comments. So I checked what would be
affected by the removal and looks only mediawiki-math would as well to
be removed:

$ dak rm -n -R mediawiki
Will remove the following packages from unstable:

 mediawiki | 1:1.19.20+dfsg-2.3 | source, all
mediawiki-classes | 1:1.19.20+dfsg-2.3 | all

Agreed.

There's interest in the mediawiki upstream development community to
to get involved in the mediawiki Debian maintenance, but that's not
going to happen in the short term.

OTOH the archive in the archive is totally outdated und unsupported
upstream, so we should remove it for now. When maintenance gets
revived it can easily reenter the archive.

Give the current status for mediawiki in unstable (version 1.19.x)
should maybe mediawiki be dropped as well from unstable?
